improvement and food security.” The research project by Laura Margarita Lopez Castillo, NutriOmics postdoctoral fellow and Maria Fernanda Diaz Flores, student of Engineering in Biotechnology received the second place in the applied research category. “With this project we are trying to find the maize variety with a greater resistance to insect pests. With our research we can select the best variety for national producers” said Lopez. On the other hand, Mariana Zavala of the Master in Biotechnology is focusing on functional foods. “I’m looking to optimize the current protocol of extraction of phenolic compounds of maize. The protocol I’m creating is efficient, sustainable and requires a smaller sample” she explained. “With my research I’m trying to reduce maize ‘stress crack.’” said Veronica Rocha, an outstanding graduate student (MBI). “’Stress crack’ is a damage in the grain that reduces its quality. I’m designing a cost-effective and efficient method that works as a detection test.”

Representatives of the Automotive Industry Attend a Talk on Environmental Regulations Businessmen, civil servants, students, and researchers attended the panel. Students were from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, and Ibero-American University. The Sustainability Committee of the Automotive Cluster in Nuevo Leon (CLAUT) is headed by Gerardo Mejia. He is a professor of the Chemistry Department at Tecnológico de Monterrey. The Committee and the Energy and Climate Change research group where in charge of the event. Ignacio Huertas, researcher of the School of Engineering and Sciences, made a brief presentation on the research group and their current projects. "We researchers are looking forward to work with companies. For example, we are redesigning a car body that diminish emissions. This project is being developed along with a Mexican company" said Huertas.

First Generation of the Master in Engineering Management Begin Classes

Professionals from six different companies assist to a welcoming session at Monterrey Campus

A Welcoming Session was offered on September 13 for graduate students of Master in Engineering Management (MEM). This event was held at Biotechnology-FEMSA Center at Monterrey Campus. The students work at six different companies, both national and international; and are looking to create solutions for industry needs. “We are very pleased with having you as MEM’s first generation. This is a high quality program that will give you a toolbox and the knowledge to solve great problems” said Jorge Welti, Graduate Studies Director. “The Master in Engineering Management is designed to offer the student academic preparation in order to be a leader” concluded Daniel Zavala, Program Director at Monterrey Campus. MEM program has also begun at Guadalajara Campus. Soon this program will also be offered at several campus of our institution.

MEM students are engineering “professionals that need to identify critical issues, take decisions and generate solutions

Tecnológico de Monterrey is one of the “Smartest Places on Earth” due to its Research and Innovation

listed] centers of innovation and smart “ [We manufacturing that we called ‘brainbelts’ ” Only Tec de Monterrey is listed in México as one of the smartest hubs due to a focus on Biotechnology, Mechatronics, and Nanotechnology. Antoine van Agtmael y Fred Bakker are the authors of “The Smartest Places on Earth: Why Rustbelts Are the Emerging Hotspots of Global Innovation” (2016). They researched about the most innovative cities and universities. Tecnológico de Monterrey is the only place in Mexico listed as one of the smartest in the world. Biotechnology, Mechatronics, and Nanotechnology are mentioned as the key factors of the ‘brainbelt’ ranking (page 13). The book’s preview is available here: https://goo.gl/O3ntAY
