Hemos puesto la Arquitectura al servicio de los ciudadanos que usarán el edificio, de quienes trabajarán en él, y de quienes tendrán la responsabilidad de cuidarlo y mantenerlo. Y al tiempo, su estructura geométrica y formal rigurosa, permite una organización espacial extraordinariamente compacta, flexible y sencilla y fácil de usar.

Pero esto no es suficiente. Ciertas matizaciones en la volumetría del edificio, que señalan el acceso o lo transforman en una máquina térmica super-eficaz, y en la materialización concreta del edificio y sus acabados le hacen vibrar con la luz y le aportarán el carácter robusto e institucional que es imprescindible en un edificio público.

Se trata de una construcción cálida y luminosa en inverno, y sombreada y fresca en verano que minimiza a casi cero el consumo de energía. La nueva Sede de la Cruz Roja de Alcorcón es una construcción amable, luminosa y optimista que trasmite con seguridad los valores de la solidaridad y la ciudadanía colaborativa y voluntaria de la Cruz Roja.

The new headquarters for the Local Assembly of the Spanish Red Cross are located on a medium-scale strip of facilities in a consolidated neighbourhood of single-family homes and large commercial and institutional buildings. The project takes advantage of the spatial comfort provided by the district’s domestic scale and the visibility offered by proximity to a large shopping centre and other public buildings. A series of small, tree-lined courtyards shape the interior atmosphere, while a prismatic and clearly defined volume emerging over a horizontal plane plinth conveys a forceful and distinctive architectural image, with a strong institutional identity.

Bioclimatic identity. Both the building and the facilities and materials were designed from an energy-saving and sustainability perspective to reduce the carbon footprint. When designing the building, passive corrective measures were implemented to reduce the energy load, thus achieving the required thermal comfort in each room at a lower cost. The openings in the rooms were arranged according to the best orientation and to avoid excessive sunlight. Exterior curtains integrated into the joinery provide shade from direct sunlight in spring and summer, while allowing the light to enter in winter. The west-facing windows of the first floor are equipped with adjustable louvre blades.

Thermodynamic strategy. One of the objectives of the proposal was to reduce energy consumption for climate control to close to zero. To achieve this, the architecture and energy systems were designed to work in unison, resulting in a building that is passively conditioned with renewable energy for virtually every month of the year. Radiant conditioning systems were employed to heat and cool the interior using both active and passive radiation. This was achieved by designing a building with an exposed thermal mass that is passively heated and cooled on the one hand, and is reinforced with a radiant slab system connected to a geothermal well on the other.
