BIO BÍO’S UNIQUE TERROIR LOCATED IN ONE OF CHILE’S SOUTHERNMOST WINE REGIONS, THE QUITRALMÁN VINEYARD DELIVERS A SAUVIGNON BLANC THAT EXPRESSES ALL OF THE VARIETY’S TYPICITY AND ELEGANCE.
The Bio Bío Valley, located 530 km south of Santiago, has a cold climate and volcanic and clay soils. It is an extreme zone where grape varieties reach unique expressions and exceptional quality.
The team of winemakers works together with the growers to define the way to manage the vineyard and the harvest date, which takes place in march, when the grapes reach their optimal ripeness.
Concha y Toro has spent decades working in and studying the Bio bío Valley with the idea that cold-climate varieties—especially Sauvignon Blanc—would show very good results.
In the case of the award-winning 2016 vintage, the growing and ripening season was marked by low temperatures because that year’s average high temperature was lower than in previous seasons.
Therefore, nearly two years ago the winery’s agricultural and enological team proposed launching a high-end Sauvignon Blanc from the region. The result is Gravas Blancas, a Sauvignon Blanc from the Quitralmán Vineyard in the Mulchén zone of the Bio bío Valley that expresses all of the variety’s typicity and elegance with the freshness characteristic of the terroir.
The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks (85%) and French oak barrels (15%) and remained on its lees for seven months.
“The Gravas Blancas Sauvignon Blanc has a very distinct style compared to Sauvignon Blanc from other valleys and primarily stand out for citrus, floral, and mineral notes,” says winemaker Enrique Tirado. The Quitralmán Vineyard sits 194 meters above sea level on the southern bank of the Bio bío River in one of Chile’s southernmost wine regions. It lies between the Nahuelbuta Mountains and the Andes in an area defined by Chilean viticultural regulations as “Entre Cordilleras” (between mountain ranges). The cold winds that descend from the Andes, the pronounced daily temperature oscillation, and the red clay and mineral soils of volcanic origin help produce a fresh and elegant white wine with well-balanced acidity. The clone 1 Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted in 2004 and are vertically positioned and guyot trained. “The availability of water is a key factor for producing high-quality Sauvignon Blanc, and in the Bio bío Valley, which has nearly 1,000 mm of rainfall per year, we have sufficient water resources. These factors, plus the way we manage the vineyard, allow us to have well-balanced vigor and prevent the appearance of certain polyphenols that produce bitterness. All of these reasons led us to choose Bio bío as the origin for Gravas Blancas,” says Tirado.

“Peumo is one of the prime areas for carmenere in Chile. The vines grow on alluvial terraces above the Cachapoal River, where the generous sun ripens the grapes without issues, and the breezes that run along the river sustain the freshness of the fruit. 2014 was a good vintage for carmenere, providing this vibrant, refreshing Terrunyo, its herbal scents of red fruit gracing a medium- bodied wine with soft tannins. Decant it now for venison stew or cellar it; Block 27 develops well over the course of ten years”.

During the first two weeks of November, winemaker Marcelo Papa participated in numerous activities held in Asia. Upon arriving in Hong Kong, Papa led numerous training sessions for the Concha y Toro team and met with key customers and renowned sommeliers. He also participated in the “Great Wines of the World” event organized by wine critic James Suckling. Also in Hong Kong, Marcelo par ticipated in the “Matter of Taste” event organized by US critic Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Papa presented the 2013 Marques de Casa Concha Syrah during the event that featured the world’s most important wines. In the evening, Marcelo joined Don Melchor winemaker Enrique Tirado and chef Bruno Menard for an exclusive dinner for 40 influential guests who had the opportunity to taste the 2014 Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay, the 2014 Marques de Casa Concha Carmenere, the 2014 Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 2012 Don Melchor. The highlights of Marcelo’s tour included participating in exclusive galas in Taipei and Singapore to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary, during which the various wines in the portfolio were presented. Marcelo concluded his Asian visit with a number of activities in Macao, including visits with customers and key sommeliers in Macao.

GRAN RESERVA SERIE RIBERAS
FRESH FROM THE RIVER THE WINES IN THE GRAN RESERVA SERIE RIBERAS LINE COME FROM THE BANKS OF THE RAPEL, CACHAPOAL, TINGUIRIRICA, AND LONCOMILLA RIVERS. All of the vineyards for the Gran Reserva Serie Riberas are located near riverbanks and therefore benefit from the cool winds that blow upriver from
the Pacific Ocean. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, which in turn gives rise to wines with more complex, concentrated, and elegant flavors and aromas.
ON THE BANKS OF THE RAPEL
ON THE BANKS OF THE CACHAPOAL
The Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc come from the Ucúquer Vineyard located on the southern bank of the Rapel River, just 15 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. This is a coastal zone where the grapes are influenced by the cool breezes from the sea and Lake Rapel.
Planted on old terraces on the northern banks of the Cachapoal River, 170 meters above sea level, the Peumo Vineyard is the source of Carmenere grapes. The moderate influence of the Rapel River and Lake produces grapes that deliver concentrated wines full of ripe red fruit with aromas of violets and chocolate.
ON THE BANKS OF THE LONCOMILLA
ON THE BANKS OF THE TINGUIRIRICA
The Syrah comes from the Villa Alegre Vineyard, planted on steep hillsides along the Loncomilla River, 175 meters above sea level. Cool breezes from the sea and the influence of the Andes Mountains result in broad daily temperature oscillations and give rise to well-structured wines with aromas of plums, blueberries, and dark chocolate.
The Palo Santo Vineyard, the source of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, is 180 meters above sea level and extends over the slopes and terraces near the southern banks of the Tinguiririca River. The soils are red and the climate is moderated by the influence of the river and the coastal breezes that enable the vineyard to deliver wines with great concentration on the palate as well as the nose.

SECOND VINTAGE OF VIGNO TAKES HONORS IN THE CHILEAN GUIDE CONCHA Y TORO’S 2014 CARIGNAN ACHIEVED A PLACE OF HONOR IN THE RANKING OF THE BEST OF THE VARIETY IN CHILE’S MOST IMPORTANT WINE GUIDE
In the most recent edition of the influential wine guide by Chilean journalist Patricio Tapia, the 2014 Vigno received 93 points and reached a place of distinction among the country’s best Carignans. Héctor Urzúa, the winemaker responsible for Vigno, said “This vintage maintains the characteristics of the 2013, but I’d say that it has greater concentration on the palate. It’s fresh and vibrant with rich natural acidity, very nice color, and notes of berries and black fruits.” The 2014 Vigno comes from the Patillo and Los Postes Vineyards, both located just 30 kilometers from the coast in the south-western sector of Cauquenes in the Maule Valley. The head trained vines are more than 60 years old and dry farmed. The zone’s clay soils have considerable granite and are poor in nutrients. The climate features high temperatures during the day with coastal breezes and cool nights that encourage good development of the variety. The 2014 Vigno was aged for 20 months in foudres (60%) and French oak barrels (40%). It has a deep and intense violet-red color and aromas of black fruits and spices. The fresh and juicy palate has very good volume.
