DON MELCHOR
DON MELCHOR 2015
ONE OF THE BEST VINTAGES IN DON MELCHOR HISTORY The new vintage of Don Melchor—the 29th released to market—has been described by Enrique Tirado as one of the best vintages since the brand was launched in 1987.
According to Tirado, the winemaker responsible, the synergy achieved among the soil, climate, and vineyard was something rarely seen. Favorable temperatures and the perfect timing and amount of precipitation allowed for balanced vines and the exceptionally even ripening of the clusters. The special growing conditions throughout the season resulted in par ticularly profound expression in this Don Melchor—a combination of intense aromas and flavors with multiple, uniquely expressive layers. Each block powerfully expresses its own personality and enhances the complexity of the final wines. The final blend of the 29th vintage of Don Melchor gave rise to a wine that perfectly expresses the Puente Alto terroir with layer upon layer, revealing its extraordinary beauty. The red fruit aromas mingle subtly with mineral notes of cold ash and pencil lead. Fine, delicate textures appear on the palate of this ample, generous wine.

PUENTE ALTO
THE WORLD’S BEST TERROIR Two of Chile’s most iconic wines—Don Melchor and Almaviva—share the privileged origin of the Puente Alto terroir, which has become firmly established as the best in Chile for producing high-end wines.
On November 2 of last year, US wine critic James Suckling named the 2015 Almaviva the best wine of 2017 after tasting more than 16,000 wines throughout the year. In doing so he became the first wine critic in history to rank a Chilean wine in top place, not to mention giving it a score of 100 points. This unprecedented honor positioned the wine—and the extraordinary Puente Alto Vineyard—at the peak of global vitiviniculture as the privileged Chilean origin of the world’s most renowned reds. Don Melchor, another of Chile’s most iconic wines, shares this distinguished vineyard in the Alto Maipo Valley at the foot of the Andes Mountains with Almaviva. Don Melchor strives to provide the best expression of a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon and be a world-class wine that expresses that identity. Over the
years it has become a genuine Chilean icon of the variety and one of the best examples in the world. The area of the vineyard that produces Don Melchor is divided into parcels of similar vigor where the vines are managed specially to obtain the balanced growth of each vine. This wine comes from seven different parcels of the vineyard and is the fruit of an exceptional effor t in creative alchemy. Winemaker Enrique Tirado’s meticulous effor ts have drawn attention to the Puente Alto terroir, which has not only been named one of the best vineyards in the world by Wine & Spirits magazine in 2002; it has also produced the nine vintages of Don Melchor selected among the top 100 wines of the world by Wine Spectator, the most influential wine magazine in the US today. Three of those vintages—the 2001, 2003, and 2010 — have appeared in the top ten of that list.

THE UNIQUE FEATURES OF PUENTE ALTO
Located at the foot of the Andes Mountains on the nor thern bank of the Maipo River in the Alto Maipo Valley at 650 meters above sea level, the history of the vineyard dates back to the mid-19th century when Manuel Antonio Tocornal impor ted the first French varieties from France prior to the phylloxera outbreak in Europe. The vineyard now has seven parecels totaling 127 hectares, 90% of which are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.1% to Cabernet Franc, 1.9 % to Merlot, and 1% to Petit Verdot, with vines that are more than 30 years old on average. Conditions here are similar to those found in other outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon terroirs such as Médoc in Bordeaux, France.
14 · DON MELCHOR
This exceptional terroir is one of the historic vineyards that laid the foundation for the Chilean wine tradition and it has earned renown for giving rise to Chile’s best Cabernet Sauvignons. Its best features include the Mediterranean climate, which helps the grapes to ripen well, with the Andean breezes preventing excessively high temperatures while drastically reducing nighttime temperatures. That daily temperature oscillation is essential for producing high quality fruit. On the other hand, the temperate days allow the grapes to ripen optimally at the end of the growing season, leading to ripe, vibrant fruit expression with good acidity—in a word, freshness. The poor, rocky, alluvial soils also lead to well-balanced vines with small clusters, extremely concentrated colors, and tannins that lead to expressive, full-bodied wines with good balance.

MARQUES DE CASA CONCHA AMONG THE TOP 150 GLOBAL VALUES The 2015 vintage of the Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay was named to a list of extraordinary wines that cost US$25 or less. Wine Spectator, one of the most influential wine magazines in the United States, included the 2015 Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay in its list of 150 wines from around the world that offer extraordinary quality in the $25 or less price range. The wine, which had already been singled out with 90 points in the magazine’s April edition, is the only Chilean Chardonnay from this vintage to appear on the exclusive list and one of just eight Chilean wines. Wine Spectator wine critic Kim Marcus referred to the wines as: “Steely and rich, with powerful f lavors of dried apple, pear and allspice. Luscious honeysuckle details show midpalate, accented by notes of dried citrus on the crisp f inish.” This is clearly high praise for this Chardonnay made with grapes from the Quebrada Seca Vineyard in the Limarí Valley.
