THE 26TH EDITION OF DON MELCHOR HAS BEEN WIDELY PRAISED BY THE WORLD’S MOST IMPORTANT SPECIALIZED MEDIA, THEREBY RATIFYING DON MELCHOR AS ONE OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS WINES IN THE WORLD.
The 2012 Don Melchor has received two important new accolades. Critic James Suckling gave the vintage an extraordinary 98 points—the highest score received to date—and a milestone in the history of one of Chile’s most emblematic Cabernet Sauvignons. The respected US critic, who was the editor of Wine Spectator magazine for more than 10 years and who currently writes for Asia Tatler in addition to his regular reports on the world’s most important wine regions for JamesSuckling.com, called Don Melchor “a great wine with sublime tannin texture that feels like the finest silk. Palate has amazing energy of richness and freshness. A great wine.” Add to this the 95 points that the influential Wine Spectator magazine awarded the wine. The May edition of the US publication was dedicated to Chilean wines, and critic Kim Marcus (responsible for tasting Chilean wines), gave the 2012 Don Melchor 95 points, positioning it as the best of the 250 wines rated for the publication. The 2012 Don Melchor was also selected as a Top Wine and included on the Collectible Wines list, comprised solely of wines with extraordinary value and potential over time.

In his article, Marcus praised the refined and complex character of the 2012 vintage and affirmed that “this wine is atestament to the vision and dedication of winemaker Enrique Tirado and ranks with the world´s great Cabernets. Don Melchor stands at the pinnacle of Chilean winemaking.” The wine’s outstanding quality comes from the celebrated Don Melchor Vineyard located at the foot of the Andes Mountains.The vineyard has privileged soil and climate conditions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines in the 127-hectare vineyard average 30 years in age and grow on the Maipo River’s oldest alluvial terrace, 650 meters above sea level in the Alto Maipo Valley. According to winemaker Enrique Tirado, “The 2012 Don Melchor is very expressive in red fruits. The palate is smooth with good structure, leading to an evolution that shows the freshness of its flavors and aromas and a long finish loaded with red fruits and berries with spicy notes.” Don Melchor has become the faithful expression of a Cabernet Sauvignon from a specific terroir and is the fruit of the exceptional work of creative alchemy in one of the historic vineyards that forms the base of Chile’s wine tradition.

JEANNIE CHO LEE HIGHLIGHTS DON MELCHOR 2012 WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY 94 POINTS IN AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED ON THE FORBES MAGAZINE WEBSITE, THE ASIAN JOURNALIST AND WINE CRITIC NAMED THE 2012 VINTAGE OF DON MELCHOR AMONG CHILE’S GREATEST WINES. One of Asia’s most influential and widely respected journalists, Jeannie Cho Lee MW, singled out the 2012 Don Melchor with a remarkable 94 points. In an ar ticle written for the Forbes Asia website, Jeannie Cho Lee called Don Melchor a complex and well-balanced wine and included it among the top eight wines of Chile. This is yet another major recognition for one of Chile’s most emblematic Cabernet Sauvignons. The renowned journalist and wine critic was Asia’s first Master of Wine. She is the author of two books and has written for publications such as Wine Spectator, Decanter,The World of Fine Wine, Wine & Dine, Wine Business International, and La Revue du Vin, among others, and also participates regularly as a judge in the Decanter World Wine Awards. Jeannie Cho Lee is currently the host of In Vino Veritas, a popular Hong Kong television program in which she travels to major wine regions, visiting important wineries and telling the stories behind the great wines of the world. Don Melchor winemaker Enrique Tirado met with her in April when she visited Chile to film an episode for the third season of the show and was able to tell her the Don Melchor story as they tasted some of its finest vintages.

DON MELCHOR 2011 NAMED CHILE’S BEST WINE IN THE 2016 WINE100 CHALLENGE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT COMPETITIONS IN CHINA HAS DECLARED THE 2011 DON MELCHOR THE BEST WINE OF CHILE, MARKING A MILESTONE FOR THE BRAND IN THIS IMPORTANT ASIAN MARKET.
The fifth edition of the Wine100 Challenge, oriented toward China’s most important trade and consumers, recognized the 2011 Don Melchor with a gold medal as well as the trophy for the Best Wine of Chile in an awards ceremony attended by winemaker Isabel Mitarakis. The 2016 Wine100 Challenge was held June 21–27, 2016 in Shanghai with a panel of renowned international experts, including Andrew Caillard MW, Fongyee Walker, Jane Skilton MW, Rober t Joseph—the founder of the International Wine Challenge—and Frankie Zhao, among others, who blind tasted more than 420 wines from around the world.

DON MELCHOR 2010 The 2009–2010 season was influenced by temperatures that were lower than usual, with cold nights during the ripening period that allowed us to wait a little longer than usual to harvest and obtain fresh fruit with tremendous Cabernet Sauvignon expression and produce a wine that maintains the personality of Don Melchor with great freshness, balance, and elegance in its tannins.
DON MELCHOR 2003 The season began with rainfall concentrated in the winter months followed by a dry season that produced bunches with small berries that resulted in very concentrated and expressive wines. The 2003 Don Melchor is a harmonious, generous, and elegant wine that is well structured with firm, ripe tannins. It is fat and dense with good volume that seduces from the beginning.
DON MELCHOR 2001 The season’s rainfall was concentrated during the winter months, which star ted cold, but turned warmer and continued on to a spring with good temperatures that enabled the vines to develop well. This wine has great aromatic expression, intense fruit, a smooth attack, and a very good network of tannins in its evolution and a long, full finish.

Enrique Tirado was in New York January 13–15 for important meetings with the press in relation to the launch of the 2012 vintage of Don Melchor. Upon arriving, the winemaker met with Josh Raynolds, who interviewed him for the Vinous web site at Del Frisco’s Steakhouse, one of the city’s most exclusive restaurants. Together they tasted the 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 vintages as well as a barrel sample of the 2015 vintage as a preview of what the future vintages of the icon Cabernet Sauvignon from Alto Maipo will bring.

Also during his stay in New York, the winemaker had the opportunity to meet with Kim Marcus, editor of the influential Wine Spectator magazine, at the La Masseria Restaurant for lunch and a tasting of the 2011 and 2012 vintages of Don Melchor, which the critic praised for their complex character and tremendous fruit. Enrique also presented some barrel samples of upcoming vintages (2013, 2014, and 2015) of Don Melchor to give him an idea of how the future vintages of this icon wine from Chile are coming along

The celebrated chef Bruno Ménard had the opportunity to visit the Don Melchor Vineyard in Puente Alto in the Maipo Valley to see the place that gives rise to the wine that starred in the “Don Melchor Culinary Challenge.” Ménard toured the vineyard with winemaker Enrique Tirado and learned how this unique wine is made. They also participated in an exclusive tasting focusing not only on the wines included in the challenge, but also on each of the blocks that go into one of Chile’s most emblematic Cabernet Sauvignons.

IMPRESSIVE PARTICIPATION OF DON MELCHOR AT VINEXPO HONG KONG 2016 YET ONCE AGAIN, DON MELCHOR WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST STARS IN THE ASIAN VERSION OF VINEXPO, HELD MAY 24–26 IN HONG KONG.
Vinexpo, one of the most important wine fairs in the world hosted its 7th Asian version in May, and Don Melchor was there to conduct important activities. The imposing stand was made to resemble the Concha y Toro casona—or manor house—in Pirque and included a large tasting room with images of the vineyards and interior of the casona were projected 360º to give the sensation of being totally immersed in one of Concha y Toro’s most emblematic locations. Visitors to the stand were able to discover the latest additions to the wines of origin portfolio and participate in numerous tastings of Don Melchor that enabled them to gain greater understanding of the qualities that make this a unique wine.

Furthermore, on the evening of May 25, Don Melchor hosted a pairing dinner in a period setting that portrayed the life and work of the founder, Don Melchor de Concha y Toro. The event took place in the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong Hotel and was attended by Alfonso Larraín, the President of Viña Concha y Toro, and Isabel Guilisasti, Marketing Manager of Wines of Origin, as well as important Asian distributors and customers. The four-course menu was especially designed by chef Bruno Ménard to pair with the 1988, 2005, 2010, and 2013 vintages of Don Melchor, and the result was an impressive balance of flavors and textures that allowed the extraordinary potential of a wine like Don Melchor to shine.

Enrique Tirado visited New York and Miami the week of June 22 for tastings and meetings with distributors and consumers. On the first day of activities, the winemaker held a tasting at Zachys Wine & Liquor, whose customers could taste the 1996, 2010, 2011, and 2012 vintages of Don Melchor.
The next day Enrique led a training session with the team of the RNDC, followed by tasting with consumers and collectors at the Total Wines shop another with the team from Sunset Corners that allowed him to demonstrate the exceptional characteristics of the 2011 and 2012 vintages of this Cabernet Sauvignon.
He also participated in an exclusive lunch at East, Miami, a luxurious hotel in the center of the city, where the guests tasted samples from the seven blocks that go into Don Melchor, along with the 2011 and 2012 vintages of the icon Cabernet Sauvignon from Alto Maipo. Later that day he joined the team of Wine Liquors in hosting a tasting dinner for collectors and wine lovers, during which he presented the 1996, 2011, and 2012 vintages.
On his final day, Enrique concentrated on two successful tastings. The first was with the team from the ABS Store to taste the 2011 Don Melchor, and the second was for consumers at the Crown shop and focused on three of his wines: the 2012 Eolo, the 2010 Gravas del Maipo, and the 2011 Don Melchor.

Winemaker Isabel Mitarakis recently toured China, Vietnam, and Singapore to promote the latest vintages of Don Melchor. She began in Shanghai, where she visited the brand’s major clients, got to know the local market, and tasted some of Chile’s best-known Cabernet Sauvignons. She also had the opportunity to present the 2013 vintage in Chengdu, where she held training sessions with the commercial team, led tastings with customers, and participated in a pairing dinner with the 2009 and 2011 vintages of Don Melchor. After giving a Master Class with Don Melchor 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 in the city of Chongqing, Isabel traveled to Vietnam for activities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. She led multiple training sessions for members of the trade in each city, met with customers and sommeliers, and participated in a wine dinner with the 1988, 1990, 2007, 2011, and 2012 vintages of Chile’s icon Cabernet Sauvignon. Isabel wrapped up her tour in Singapore, where she met with Concha y Toro’s commercial team, had lunch with renowned local sommeliers, offered two Master Classes to present the 2013 vintage of Don Melchor to members of the on-trade, and participated in activities with important local distributors that enabled her to talk about the vast qualities of this Cabernet Sauvignon in one of the brand’s most important Asian markets.

The importance of origin Carmín de Peumo comes from the Peumo Vineyard in the Cachapoal Valley, one of Chile’s oldest viticultural areas. This vineyard constitutes the terroir in which Carmenere has been grown for more than 100 years, establishing it as the most widely recognized origin for the variety due to its ideal conditions for achieving proper ripening and producing wines with smooth, elegant tannins and great depth and concentration. Carmin de Peumo’s successful history has contributed to the development of the variety at the global level. AMELIA NAMED CHILE’S BEST WHITE MARCELO COPELLO, ONE OF BRAZIL’S LEADING WINE WRITERS AND OPINION LEADERS, DISTINGUISHED THE 2015 AMELIA AS THE BEST WHITE WINE FROM CHILE IN A TASTING OF THE COUNTRY’S BEST CHARDONNAYS AND SAUVIGNON BLANCS. The Praça São Lourenço in Sao Paulo was the site of the March 21 presentation of the Brazil edition of the Descorchados Wine Guide. The event was organized in conjunction with Adega magazine and was attended by the most important wineries of Chile, Argentina, and Brazil as well as wine writers, sommeliers, and Adega readers. One of the highlights of the event is having the opportunity to taste the wines that were featured in the guide, such as the
2014 Terrunyo Carmenere Lot Nº1, named the Best Carmenere of Chile; the 2013 Marques de Casa Concha Limited Edition Cabernet Sauvignon, which received 94 points; and the 2013 Marques de Casa Concha Carmenere, which earned 92 points; as well as the 2014 Gravas del Maipo, which also received 93 points, marking once again a successful participation in one of the most anticipated wine events in the Southern hemisphere.

MARQUES DE CASA CONCHA CABERNET SAUVIGNON IS CELEBRATED BY THE ENGLISH PRESS THE SUNDAY EXPRESS COLUMNIST AND AUTHOR OF VARIOUS BOOKS ON WINE JAMIE GOODE PRAISED THE 2014 MARQUES DE CASA CONCHA AND THE WORK THAT MARCELO PAPA HAS DONE WITH THE LINE. One of England’s most respected wine writers, Jamie Goode, posted a tasting video on his website, www.wineanorak.com, in which he highlighted the fresh and fruity character of the 2014 Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet. In the video the journalist discussed elements that winemaker Marcelo Papa has incorporated into the wine, such as harvesting up to a month earlier than he did three or four years ago; using fewer new barrels; and incorporating the use of foudres, all of which has resulted in juicier, more elegant wines that represent a new move in Chilean wine, a factor that the English journalist greatly appreciates.

MARCELO PAPA’S SUCCESSFUL TOUR OF IRELAND, DENMARK, AND HOLLAND WINEMAKER MARCELO PAPA WAS IN EUROPE MAY 30 THROUGH JUNE 4 TO PARTICIPATE IN A NUMBER OF ACTIVITIES IN DUBLIN, COPENHAGEN, AND AMSTERDAM. Winemaker Marcelo Papa began his activities in Dublin, Ireland, where he led a tasting dinner with the Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon at the exclusive l’Ecrivain restaurant, attended by journalists from media such as the Sunday Business Post, the Irish Examiner, and the Sunday Times, among others, as well as the radio host Pat Kenny, who interviewed him the following day at the Newstalk studios.
Marcelo then headed to the Taste of Amsterdam Festival in Holland, where a stand had been set up to offer visitors tastings of Marques de Casa Concha. He also led three directed tastings for consumers, in which he explained the concept behind the line and the qualities that have led it to become the leader in the Super Premium category in one of Europe’s most important markets.
In Denmark, the winemaker was invited to the studio of the popular MasterChef television program to lead a tasting of the 2014 Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay, 2014 Pinot Noir, and 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon for the store managers of COOP.

MARCELO PAPA IN ENGLAND THE WINEMAKER WAS IN LONDON JUNE 14–18 TO MEET WITH SPECIALIZED JOURNALISTS AND LEAD TWO IMPORTANT EVENTS FOR THE TRADE AND CONSUMERS.
The Marques de Casa Concha brand hosted activities for the specialized press, trade, and consumers during Marcelo Papa’s most recent trip to England during the third week of June. On his first day, the winemaker met with Richard Hemming MW, one of the key writers for JancisRobinson.com, and Margaret Rand of Decanter magazine to taste different samples of Chardonnay from the Limarí and Bío Bío Valleys. Marcelo then led a Master Class organized in conjunction with The Drinks Business to present diverse Chardonnays from extreme valleys, with samples aged in foudres and different types of barrels. 36 important members of the trade attended, including representatives from Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Marks & Spencer, Vinoteca, Tate, Grosvenor Hotel, and the Royal Garden Hotel.
The next day Papa made a presentation at an event organized by The Spectator magazine, attended by 35 people—mostly consumers—to taste Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay (2014), Merlot (2013), Carmenere (2014), Syrah (2013), and Cabernet Sauvignon (2013). He also par ticipated in “The Three Wine Men,” an event organized by Oz Clarke, Olly Smith, and Tim Atkin MW, three renowned experts that attracted 1,500 wine enthusiasts to show the latest industry trends around the world. Marcelo Papa led three successful and well-attended Master Classes that explored the qualities of each of the Marques de Casa Concha wines. To conclude, the Concha y Toro UK team participated in the Tom Cannavan’s Festival of Wine in Glasgow, in which Marques de Casa Concha was one of the most popular wines served.

SEBASTIÁN RODRÍGUEZ WAS A JUDGE IN BRAZIL’S LARGEST BLIND TASTING ORGANIZED BY THE RENOWNED WINE CRITIC MARCELO COPELLO, THE GREAT BRAZILIAN WINE TASTING FEATURED MORE THAN 850 WINES FROM 110 WINERIES. Winemaker Sebastián Rodríguez, a member of the Marques de Casa Concha team, participated as a judge in the fifth edition of the Great Brazilian Wine Tasting, the country’s largest blind tasting, organized by the well-known critic Marcelo Copello. This year’s competition drew 850 wines from 110 wineries. Held June 5–9 in Río de Janeiro’s Hotel Vila Galé, the Great Brazilian Wine Test has become one of Brazil’s most important wine tastings. GRAN RESERVA SERIE RIBERAS TAKES PART IN THE LAUNCH OF THE DESCORCHADOS FAIR IN NEW YORK WINEMAKER MARCIO RAMÍREZ REPRESENTED THE LINE IN THE EVENT HELD IN THE ASTOR CENTER, WHICH ATTRACTED 250 PEOPLE WHO TASTED THE BEST WINES OF CHILE, ARGENTINA, BRAZIL, AND URUGUAY.
The English edition of the highly successful Descorchados wine guide published annually by Chilean wine writer Patricio Tapia was launched in New York City on June 14, and once again the Wines of Origin portfolio was present.
Limited Edition, which earned an outstanding 94 points in the publication; and the 2015 Marques de Casa Concha País Cinsault, which received 92 points in the guide.
Winemaker Marcio Ramírez represented Concha y Toro with the 2014 Gran Reserva Serie Riberas Cabernet Sauvignon, which received 90 points in the 2016 edition of the guide.
