EXTRAORDINARY 96 POINTS FOR DON MELCHOR 2014 The influential U.S. magazine published its annual report on Chilean wines in its May edition. Don Melchor, with an outstanding 96 points, reaches the highest score in its history in this magazine and is once again positioned as the best Chilean wine. The May edition of the U.S. magazine Wine Spectator recognized the 2014 Don Melchor with an outstanding 96 points, the highest score the influential publication has ever awarded a Chilean wine. The 2003 and 2005 vintages of the wine had also received the same score.
Wine critic Kim Marcus described it as: “A ripe, rich and full-bodied red, with powerful flavors of dark cherry, plum pudding and currant that feature a lush creaminess. Firm and savory midpalate, ending with a long and refined finish that shows mineral and cocoa butter accents, supported by dusty tannins. Drink now through 2024.”
Don Melchor was also the only Chilean wine to be named to the magazine’s exclusive list of Hot Wines—exceptional wines with high scores. Wine Spectator also included it in the selection of Collectible Wines, a group of wines with extraordinary potential and value over time.
This exceptional score is added to a long list of Don Melchor’s historic achievements in Wine Spectator, where it has appeared among the Top 100 wines of the World eight times—three times among the Top 10— corroborating its position among the greatest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile and the world.

VINTAGE #28
DON MELCHOR 2014 RELEASE A new vintage becomes part of the Don Melchor story. The 2014 vintage is the 28th edition of the Chilean industry’s first icon wine. Twenty-eight years celebrates Don Melchor with the launch of the 2014 vintage, consolidating itself as one of the few Chilean wines with this trajectory. Each year, its oenological team -conformed by Enrique Tirado and Isabel Mitarakis- seeks to reflect the best expression of a Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto. The 2013–2014 growing season was exceptional for Don Melchor. It began with a cold spring and early summer with cool conditions and cold nights that encouraged good ripening with tremendous expression and concentration of aromas and flavors in the grapes.
8 · DON MELCHOR
The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were picked from March 25 through May 8, while the Cabernet Franc harvest was concentrated between March 25 and April 1. The 2014 Don Melchor is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc and spent 15 months in French oak barrels. It has aromas characteristic of Cabernet Sauvignon followed by mineral notes recalling ash and pencil lead. The tremendously complex palate offers excellent concentration and freshness with velvety tannins.

INTERVIEW
MORE THAN 30 HARVEST OF DON MELCHOR Chile’s first icon wine has had more than 30 consecutive harvests. Over the course of its threedecade history, Don Melchor has achieved a position among the great Cabernet Sauvignons of Chile and the world.
The history of Don Melchor, Chile’s first icon wine, began in the mid-1980s as the result of Viña Concha y Toro’s desire to produce world-class wines. Goetz von Gersdorff, the winemaker at that time, was asked to select the best wines from the Puente Alto vineyard to make the first Don Melchor, the emblem of Viña Concha y Toro and the Chilean wine industry. Enrique Tirado has been the Don Melchor winemaker since 1997 and has been in charge of positioning Don Melchor among the great examples of Cabernet Sauvignon at the global level. Tenacious, observant, and inquisitive, he has worked on every aspect of the wine in great detail, from the vineyard to the winery. HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR WORK AT DON MELCHOR?
The first thing I did was walk through the vineyard and took on the task of mapping it. At that time we were also replacing the raulí-wood tanks with stainless steel, adding new crushing and pressing systems, and updating our equipment and machinery. In 1997 we made a technical division with a team exclusively devoted to Don Melchor that began to work from the vineyard to the winery. This team worked on irrigation and soil and nutrition studies in order to understand the vineyard better. The harvest was 100% manual and divided into very small parcels and then the grapes were places on selection tables. This is very detailed work that demands great investment, but it’s very necessary.
10 · DON MELCHOR
HOW WAS THE VINEYARD DIVISION DETERMINED?
It was based on vegetative expression, shoot growth, soil studies, and especially by the wines produced by each parcel. We walked many kilometers through the vineyard in order to map out and divide it accordingly. Over the years we have come to realize that each parcel produces wines with different expressions and have been able to group them into seven parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon as well as small parcels of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Each produces different aromas, flavors, textures, and layers of expressions. These differences enable us to consistently produce a wine with tremendous aromatic intensity and complexity with complete, well-rounded palates with great expression, density, elegance, and persistence. In other words, the parcels are responsible for maintaining the tremendous quality and consistency in the final wine year after year. THE SOIL STUDY HAS BEEN ESSENTIAL IN THE PROCESS OF DIVIDING THE VINEYARD INTO SECTORS. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS?
Beginning in 1998 we began to research the soil to try to understand the factors that produced the differences in the wines. We have conducted various studies and continue learning more about the soils and their composition every day. There are a set of variables that determine each parcel, including the content, size, and distribution of the stones in the different horizons; root growth;
the clay, sand, and silt content; and nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, carbonates, and calcium; the amount of organic matter; and the water retention capacity, etc. In other words, there are many factors that have an influence and the way they interact make the soils even more diverse and complex. We continue our research every day to have an even better knowledge of the fantastic Puente Alto soil and terroir. HOW DOES THE WORK WITH THE PARCELS IN THE VINEYARD CONTINUE IN THE WINERY?
Fermentation is very respectful in relation to getting the best from every parcel and not trying to have just one Cabernet Sauvignon, but rather to understand and respect that each zone produces a distinct expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. One zone produces more red fruit and elegance, while another has more tannins and concentration. We have learned to respect the different expressions that come from the vineyard. We end up with an average of 140 –150 free run and press wines, and when they are all ready, we taste them all to make the blend.
DON MELCHOR HAS ALREADY RELEASED 28 VINTAGES. WHAT MAKES THE WINE EVOLVE SO WELL?
For me, Don Melchor’s ability to age well begins in the vineyard and in the rocky soil in Puente Alto. It’s poor soil in terms of nutrition, but it’s also complex and shifts between clay, carbonate, silt, and sand. That complexity is what enables this network of tannins, anthocyanins, flavors, just the right acidity, and aromas that remain and evolve over time. That’s what allows Don Melchor to age over time, that mesh of elements that is impossible to create elsewhere—that’s what enables a wine like Don Melchor to evolve and be lively after 20 or 30 years. If there’s something unique about Puente Alto, it’s the ability to produce a structure in the wines that gives that elegant side, that complexity and energy to withstand long aging. That’s really quite unique. Don Melchor’s quality is possible thanks to the soil, which is very good, and to the climate that is highly influenced by the Andes Mountains. To make a wine like Don Melchor, that soil, that climate, that Andean influence are all necessary. Without them we couldn’t make Don Melchor.
WHAT IS THE CONCEPT BEHIND DON MELCHOR?
I think that there’s a clear concept that we have always maintained in Don Melchor, and that is respect for the origin and the expression of the vineyard through the wine. It’s a process that begins in the vineyard and continues in the winery, in aging, and then in bottling. It’s about finding the balance between the different expressions of the terroir; there’s a complexity that comes from these different expressions that are in balance. What we really want to do is make a wine that expresses the fruit. We want to make a Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses Puente Alto, and that is our pillar—we hold firm on that front, on the Don Melchor style, and in the expression of Puente Alto. And we want that to be the case in all of the years to come. And even better.
WHAT DOES PUENTE ALTO MEAN FOR YOU?
The truth is that the years have gone by. I’ve been exclusively in charge of Don Melchor for 20 years, and I feel like I’m par t of Puente Alto, it feels like it’s ‘mine,’ it’s very personal. I like to walk through the vineyard, to know every row, to know which parcel produces red fruit and which produces black fruit, where the tannins are, etc., and for that, you need to walk the vineyard and be very close to it. NOW AFTER 30 YEARS, WHAT DO YOU THINK DON MELCHOR CONTRIBUTES TO THE WORLD OF WINE?
Don Melchor is a world-class wine that has helped position Chile as a producer of high quality wines.

THE WORLD OF FINE WINE
PINOT NOIR RECEIVES HIGHEST SCORE IN SOUTH AMERICA The March edition of prestig ious British magazine The World of Fine Wine awarded Marques de Casa Concha Pinot Noir 2015 a rating of 90 points, the highest score in a tasting of South America Pinot Noir wines. The British magazine The World of Fine Wine is one of the world’s most highly celebrated wine industry publications, and its tastings are performed by top British wine exper ts. The score achieved by the 2015 vintage of Marques de Casa Concha Pinot Noir is a great achievement for the wine itself and for Chile as a whole.
“Very deep red in color, but with light that also steeps through the wine. It gives off solid and sturdy cherries with a touch of tar: a very good pinot bouquet and a small step towards true complexity. On the palate, this is a very thick and meaty pinot, like Pommard, but that tasty exuberance shows off a few black fruits: firm, frank, fresh, and full.” Andrew Jefford
“This is a wine with a captivating sweet fragrance, like blackberries, with a lot of pinot noir character, fresh and glowing to start. The intensity of its bouquet is mimicked on the palate, with a fine concentration of fruits, like black cherries and blackberries, framed in an unmistakable musculature of tannins and purifying traces of fresh and balanced acidity.”

MARQUES DE CASA CONCHA REFRESHES ITS IMAGE Chile’s top international award winning range of super-premium wines, Marques de Casa Concha, presents its new image, with a modern design that perfectly reflects its classic and contemporary spirit.
With a track record spanning over four decades and as industry leader in super-premium wines, the range spearheaded by exper t winemaker Marcelo Papa has taken its place as an iconic Chilean brand, creating wines that can surprise, captivate, and faithfully express their variety and the unique features of their place of origin.
The new look also sets out to highlight each wine’s grape variety and place of origin, par ticularly for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which have received new labels that feature the color blue to reflect their coastal vineyards.
Facing up to new challenges without par ting ways with its history and tradition, Marques de Casa Concha has striven to incorporate its innovative spirit into its image, presenting a por tfolio of wines with a modern and refreshed design.
Fur ther modifications include a change in capsule color, standardization of text for all grape varieties, and the new Concha y Toro endorsement. “We wanted our future labels to communicate the brand’s innovative spirit without abandoning its enormous tradition and legacy, which have positioned it as one of Chile’s most popular and highly celebrated brands,” said Isabel Guilisasti, Concha y Toro’s Marketing Manager for Fine Wines.
One of the meaningful changes was to the brand’s logo. In a bid to enhance its visibility, the emblem was modernized to bring its impact into the foreground, making it, together with the new label design, one of the most distinctive features of the redesigned bottles.
Marques de Casa Concha’s new image thus sets out to offer a more contemporary and modern design, alongside Marques de Casa Concha’s never-ending effor ts to seek out the best possible vineyards for each grape variety.

LIMITED EDITIONS
TWO NEW WINES JOINS THE MARQUES DE CASA CONCHA RANGE The two newcomers are a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, both 2016 vintage, made with grapes from the Biobío Valley – one of Chile’s southernmost winegrowing regions, home to wines of exceptional quality and unique expressiveness. Concha y Toro is launching two new limited edition wines to join its Marques de Casa Concha range: a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir from the Biobío Valley, both 2016 vintage, characterized by freshness, elegance, and balanced acidity. Concha y Toro has been using grapes from the Biobío Valley for some years, getting excellent results from this go-to area for cold weather varieties. So in 2016 winemaker Marcelo Papa set out to create a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir with grapes from the Quitralmán vineyard in Mulchén, on the southern bank of the Biobío River. The Biobío Valley is located some 530 km south of Santiago; it has a cold climate, influenced by the cool breezes that blow down from the Andes, and significant temperature variations. Its red, clay-rich soils have their origins in volcanic rocks. In the words of winemaker Marcelo Papa, “The Chardonnay has a style that combines richness and elegance, with a delicate bouquet of white pears and a deeply concentrated palate, with a sprightly spirit, great structure, and creamy notes.” The wine was fermented in French oak barrels, in which it was then stored for 12 months. Meanwhile, Papa describes the Pinot Noir as having “a concentrated raspberry bouquet. It is ref ined on the palate, and has good structure.” The wine was fermented in steel tanks and spent 11 months in French oak barrels. This launch is a testament to Marques de Casa Concha’s innovative spirit and commitment to representing Chile’s full range of diversity, offering a dynamic por tfolio of wines.

INTERVIEW WITH MARCELO PAPA
THE WINEMAKER WHO BETS FOR EXTREME VALLEYS Chile’s vast diversity of soils and climates makes it possible to constantly find, explore, and develop new zones, varieties, and styles—and for proof, just look at the Marques de Casa Concha line’s dynamic portfolio of wines. The brand’s latest foray into the extreme comes to light with the release of a new Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir from the Biobío valley in the country’s far south, just as they did in the north some years ago.

“As people in the wine business well know, Chile is a land of extremes. It has the world’s longest mountain chain to the east and the deepest ocean on the west. The driest desert on the planet is to the north, and the south has the coldest environmental conditions on Earth, covered by ice f ields and glaciers.” This quote from an ar ticle in The Drinks Business on Marcelo Papa’s 2016 master class about Chile’s extreme valleys refers to the country’s par ticular geography from nor th to south that makes it possible to develop new winegrowing zones, grape varieties, and styles of wines. Having made his f irst wine from Limarí in 1996, Marcelo Papa was one of the pioneers of the valley, one of the nor thernmost in Chile. In 2002 he bottled Concha y Toro’s f irst wine from the origin, and in 2008 it changed the denomination of the Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay to Limarí. Now that the brand is debuting a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir from the Biobío in the extreme south of Chile, Marcelo explains some of the differences between the two origins:
WHAT ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS IN CHILE FOR SEEKING OUT TYPICITY IN A VARIETY?
The proximity to the sea and the Andes, as well as the character of the soils are some of the crucial elements required for seeking typicity in a variety. Limarí ’s vineyards, for example, average 25 kilometers from the sea, but because the Coastal Mountains at that latitude are low, there’s a strong coastal influence. Biobío, on the other hand, is about 100 kilometers from the coast and absolutely continental. The Coastal Mountains reach one of their highest points there and leave Mulchén and the rest of the valley entirely separated from the sea. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SOILS IN THE TWO VALLEYS?
Our philosophy is to plant each variety in the right place for the best expression of its typicity, and both Limarí and Biobío are first-rate regions for producing these two varieties.
Limarí ’s soils are predominantly of alluvial origin, although some are colluvial, and to a lesser degree, granitic. The Limarí River is the visible demarcation between the valley’s two completely different soil types. The nor thern side of the river, where the Marques de Casa Concha vineyards are located, is more topographically diverse and has less clay in the upper layers of the soil. And the southern side is flatter with considerable clay. There’s a common element in this diversity of soils though, and that’s calcium carbonate, which is key to understanding the valley’s wines.
When they first suggested the possibility of making wines from Biobío, I immediately thought of Chardonnay and Pinot because I like them both and have spent years working with them.
The vineyards in Biobío are located on the southern bank of the river, where the soils are volcanic, red, and rich in clay, which yields wines that are fresh and elegant with well-balanced acidity.
WHY MAKE A PINOT NOIR AND CHARDONNAY IN BIOBÍO AND IN LIMARÍ?

LIMARÍ VALLEY
WHAT CAN YOU SAY WITH RESPECT TO THE DIFFERENCES IN RAINFALL BETWEEN THE TWO VALLEYS—RAINFALL IS SCANT IN LIMARÍ, WHILE BIOBÍO RECEIVES MORE THAN 1,000 MM OF RAIN EACH YEAR.
Limarí borders the Atacama Desert, one of the driest in the world. The valley barely receives 80–100 mm of rainfall each year, and therefore the water used for irrigation comes from Andean meltwater, which is accumulated in reservoirs. A key factor in the yield and quality of the wines from the Biobío, however, is the abundance of precipitation, with 1,300 mm per year. WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE IN THE TWO VALLEYS?
Limarí has a coastal climate, which means a lower daily temperature oscillation. The minimums are higher and the maximums are lower due to the proximity to the sea. The low temperatures hover around 12ºC, and the highs are generally about 24º or 25ºC.
BIOBÍO VALLEY
ARE THE WINES FROM BOTH VALLEYS VINIFIED SIMILARLY?
The vinification and aging processes are very similar, largely because of a shared characteristic in the soils. Both have red clay, which contributes structure to the wines and enables us to process them in essentially the same way. WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE CHARDONNAYS AND PINOT NOIRS FROM LIMARÍ AND BIOBÍO?
The Chardonnay from Limarí has a cer tain mineral character due to the calcium carbonate in the soils. It also has less fruit intensity with notes of lime and lemon. Biobío doesn’t have mineral soils, and it’s also sunnier, so its Chardonnays have a pleasing volume on the palate and a fresh finish with fruit flavors that lean more toward apples and pears. Biobío’s Pinot Noirs have rather intense fruit with pronounced notes of raspberries, while those from Limarí are more delicate and less exuberant.
Biobío, however, is not influenced by the Pacific, so temperatures can vary as much as 20ºC in a single day, with nighttime lows of 9ºC and daytime highs of 29ºC. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES IN LUMINOSITY IN THE TWO REGIONS?
Because of the latitude, the sun is much more intense in the nor th, although in Limarí, the light is filtered by the morning fog that comes in from the coast. Biobío is very sunny on clear days, so the vineyard is exposed to the light for longer periods of time.
