CONCHA Y TORO DISTINGUISHED ONCE AGAIN AS THE WINERY OF THE YEAR BY WINE & SPIRITS Viña Concha y Toro was once again singled out as one of the world’s great wine producers on the 2015 version of the “Top 100 Wineries of the Year” published in the December edition of the US magazine Wine & Spirits. This year, Wine & Spirits praised the winery’s work with the Carmenere variety, “elevated to a Chilean classic, especially with the brilliant 2013 harvest.” On the 2015 list of the 100 best wines, the 2013 Terrunyo Carmenere Lot Nº1 received 94 points and was named the “Best Carmenere of Chile,” and the 2011 Terrunyo Cabernet Sauvignon, another 94-point wine, was declared Chile’s “Best Cabernet Sauvignon.” Other wines on the list included the 2013 Marques de Casa Concha Carmenere, which also received a historic 94 points, and the 2013 Gran Reserva Serie Riberas Chardonnay, all of which had been highlighted in the magazine’s June edition.
“This is a recognition of the excellence, passion, and history of our winemakers who have joined with the agricultural area and done tremendous work with Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and other varieties, resulting in extraordinary praise for the Concha y Toro portfolio’s Super and Ultra Premium wines. It is also important to mention the ongoing quest to innovate and offer excellent new products with less oak and earlier harvests to obtain fresher wines with greater expression of terroir,” affirms Isabel Guilisasti, Marketing Director for Wines of Origin. Viña Concha y Toro has consistently appeared on this list without interruption since 1997, making it one of the only three in the world—and the only one in Chile—to receive such a high number of nominations to this prestigious group.

“Just been released. Even cooler and drier than 2010. Just 1% Cabernet Franc. Blackish crimson. A bit more mono-dimensional blackcurrant than the 2010. Big and super fruity. Acidity is a little more marked than in 2010. Reasonably fine tannins. A little less voluptuous and obvious than the 2010 but it may well last longer and develop into something regal. There’s still the note of fermented blackcurrant pastilles. Very refined.”
“As per usual, Don Melchor is singing a pretty tune. Deep, dense aromas of floral berry fruits and tarry darkness are solid and complete. Pure, elegant and confident across the palate, this delivers firm cassis, plum and cherry flavors backed by a toasty finish accented by licorice. This is rich and brawny but not heavy.”
“Gorgeous aromas of eucalyptus, black currants, berries and stones. Medium to full body, fine tannins and tension. Firm, caressing texture. This remains one of the top cabs of Chile as always.”

“With 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and some drops of Cabernet Franc, this comes from the traditional Tocornal Vineyard, planted in the mid-1970s. A cold vintage reveals its herbal, spicy flavours, but above all a crunchy, vivacious acidity and pungent tannins that need time in a bottle. A brilliant version of a classic.”
“Rich and powerful, with balanced and elegant flavors of dried raspberry, mocha, mineral and dark chocolate. Creamy midpalate, presenting a broad and lush finish, revealing slate and white pepper notes.”

FORBES MAGAZINE HONORS DON MELCHOR 2011 AS ONE OF THE 10 BEST WINES OF 2015 The prestigious Forbes magazine honored Don Melchor 2011 as one of the 10 Best Wines of 2015 in an article published on December 2 by food and wine writer and Forbes contributor Katie Bell. “This is a “highlights” list of 365 days (well, minus a few days off for beer) of tasting wine. These wines made the cut because they rose to the top on the day I tasted them,” writes the author, who also confessed that the hit movie “The 33” – about the rescue of miners in Copiapó – inspired her to include a Chilean wine on her list, and she chose Don Melchor as one of the most emblematic Chilean wines on the globe. Don Melchor 2011 is the only Chilean wine on the list, which also includes outstanding wines from Italy, the United States, Spain, and Australia.
“Don Melchor 2011, Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon: Wines from Chile don’t cross my path often enough, but this one did, and with the recent release of the movie about the Chilean miners, The 33, it seems quite fitting to recognize an emblematic wine of Chile. The wine is named for the founder of Concha y Toro winery, Don Melchor, and is styled like a French Bordeaux—intense and fragrant with black cherry and mocha on the palate. The sculpted and precise tannins and can easily tolerate a decade or more of aging.” Katie Bell.

DON MELCHOR 2012
HIGHLY ANTICIPATED RELEASE OF THE NEW VINTAGE OF CHILE’S ICON CABERNET SAUVIGNON WITH 26 VINTAGES NOW TO ITS NAME, DON MELCHOR HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS A WORLD CLASS ICON WINE, DEMOSTRATING CONSISTENT QUALITY AND PROVING IT IS THE ONLY CHILEAN WINE WITH THIS HISTORY.
A new vintage has been added to Don Melchor’s already substantial history. It’s the 2012 vintage, the 26th of this Chilean icon Cabernet Sauvignon. In the following interview the brand’s winemaker, Enrique Tirado, recounts the wine’s history and comments on the latest vintage. THE DON MELCHOR VINEYARD IS AN ICONIC PLACE FOR CHILEAN WINE. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THIS SPECIAL PLACE? The Don Melchor Vineyard has played a key role in the history of Chilean wine. In fact, it was there that the first French varieties were planted in the 19th century, prior to the phylloxera outbreak in Europe. The vineyard covers 127 hectares and is divided into 7 blocks. Specific percentages of each block are carefully selected to convey particular qualities to the final blend of Don Melchor. One of the estate’s main characteristics is its location on the oldest alluvial terrace of the Maipo River, where the soil is poor in nutrients, but very diverse in its composition. Clay, silt, sand, gravel, and other elements give Don Melchor its unique character, which has been clearly demonstrated over the years.
14 · DON MELCHOR
WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE PUENTE ALTO TERROIR THAT MAKES IT IDEAL FOR GROWING CABERNET SAUVIGNON? One of the secrets of the Puente Alto terroir is below the ground, in the rocky subsoil that’s composed of material carried down from the Andes by the Maipo River. The soil is nutrient-poor with good drainage, which prevents excessive vegetative growth and naturally limits excesses of plant vigor and high fruit production. The climate also plays an important role, with warm summer days in Puente Alto followed by cold nights. The cool mountain air that blows down the Maipo Canyon refreshes the vineyards here more than in other parts of the Maipo Valley, while the high daytime-nighttime temperature variation helps ripen the tannins, develop aromas, and produce exceptionally high amounts of polyphenolic compounds in the grapes.
WHAT DIFFERENTIATES PUENTE ALTO CABERNET SAUVIGNON FROM OTHER WORLD-CLASS CABERNET SAUVIGNONS? Puente Alto Cabernet Sauvignon has expressive fresh red fruit mingled with mineral and graphite notes that result in a complex, diverse array of aromas. On the palate, the variety offers an outstanding balance of refined tannins and freshness, as well as good concentration. It’s a dense wine, with long-lasting persistence.
THE RELEASE OF DON MELCHOR 2012 MARKS THE 26TH VINTAGE. IN YOUR OPINION, HOW HAS DON MELCHOR EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? Over the course of those 26 vintages, Don Melchor has consistently and repeatedly demonstrated the wine’s quality and stature as the first and only Chilean wine with such a heritage. For this reason, it is duty-bound to show the entire world Chile’s potential as a producer of world-class wines.
WHAT WERE THE GROWING PERIOD AND HARVEST CONDITIONS LIKE IN 2012? Throughout the growing and ripening period temperatures were higher than the historic average. The climate was warm this year, but thanks to the cool nights from the Andes Mountains and an earlier than usual harvest, the clusters ripened very well and we achieved a wine with tannins that balanced freshness and quality superbly. Precipitation was lower than normal in 2012, with a total of 292 millimeters, which fell mostly in winter. The harvest was carried out about one week earlier than normal, on average, beginning on April 10th and lasting until May 9th. Despite the overall high temperatures, the minimums remained low, which led to good phenolic ripening in the grapes and good tannin structure in the wines.
WHAT CAN DON MELCHOR FANS EXPECT FROM THE 2012 VINTAGE? Don Melchor 2012 offers very expressive red fruit. It’s smooth on the attack, then gives way to good structure that evolves to display fresh flavors and aromas. The finish is long, with standout notes of berries and spices. This is a very intense wine with a special attraction in the intensity of its aromas and flavors. It is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc and spent 15 months in French oak barrels, 71% new and 29% second-use.
WHAT DIRECTION DO YOU THINK DON MELCHOR WILL TAKE IN THE NEXT TEN YEARS? For me, Don Melchor represents the constant desire to achieve the truest, most unique, and inimitable expression of each plant in the vineyard, in order to produce a beautiful balance from each harvest of the Puente Alto terroir. And we will continue to move in that direction over the next ten years.

Gravas Rojas 2014 is a blend of Cabernet Franc (73%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (27%) and is crafted from grapes from the Puente Alto Vineyard, situated at the foot of the Andes Mountains. The vineyard is situated on
an ancient alluvial terrace exposed to the cool breezes that blow down from the Andes, and offers the ideal conditions for growing Cabernet Franc. “After three years working in the Maipo Valley, first with Don Melchor and later with Gravas del Maipo Syrah, we decided to launch Gravas Rojas, a wine with standout aromas of red fruit and spices and a deep, fine-textured palate,” explains its winemaker Enrique Tirado.

the 2013 vintage was aged for 13 months in French oak barrels. It is an elegant and complex wine with mineral notes on the nose, along with blackberries and a touch of blackcurrant. It fills the mouth with its underlying ripe tannins. TERRUNYO
TWO NEW WINES JOIN THE TERRUNYO “LOT N°1” LINE FROM THE MAIPO VALLEY AT THE FOOT OF THE ANDES MOUNTAINS AND THE CASABLANCA VALLEY ON THE CHILEAN COAST COME TWO NEW WINES FOR TERRUNYO’S “LOT N°1” LINE. In its ongoing search to identify terroirs that authentically express the character of each variety, Viña Concha y Toro launches two new wines onto the market in its renowned Terrunyo Lot N°1 line: Terrunyo Cabernet Sauvignon Lot N°1 2014 and Terrunyo Merlot Lot N°1 2014. Under the watchful eye of winemaker Ignacio Recabarren, two limited-edition wines (just 150 to 200 9-liter cases of each were produced) take their place alongside the 2013 vintage of Carmenere Lot Nº1, which was successfully launched last year and is now in its second vintage, and has become a favorite Carmenere among wine writers and consumers alike. Terrunyo Cabernet Sauvignon Lot N°1 2014 is made from grapes grown in the Maipo Valley’s Pirque Vineyard, one of the winery’s oldest, with vines planted more than 40 years ago.The soil is alluvial in origin, with low fertility and high permeability owing to the gravel substrate. The climate is intensely influenced by the Andes Mountains and the nearby Maipo River. A high daytime-nighttime temperature variation helps concentrate the fruit and intensify aromas. This is a wine that’s “expressive on the nose, with notes of raspberries, blueberries, and blackcurrants. Extremely refreshing, juicy, and balanced. Underlying tannins provide a backdrop with great density. Persistent, with a lingering flavor of blackcurrants,” according to the tasting notes of winemaker Ignacio Recabarren. For its part, Terrunyo Merlot Lot N°1 2014 is composed of 92% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine comes from Los Boldos vineyard, located in the coldest part of the Casablanca Valley. This vineyard is situated just 15 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean and features cool coastal breezes, early morning fog, and a marked temperature oscillation. These conditions are ideal for growing Merlot, as they enable the grapes to ripen slowly and develop more intense aromas and flavors. These newly launched Terrunyo wines reflect the brand’s philosophy of striving to faithfully express a specific vineyard block to enable each variety to reflect its unique, complex character.

TERRUNYO
TERRUNYO CARMENERE LOT N°1 2014 MAKES ITS MARK IN DESCORCHADOS 2016 NOW IN ITS SECOND VINTAGE, THIS WINE ONCE AGAIN WINS OVER THE PALATES OF CRITICS AND IS CROWNED AS CHILE’S BEST CARMENERE IN THE 2016 EDITION OF DESCORCHADOS WINE GUIDE. Terrunyo Carmenere Lot N°1 2014 received 96 points and was recognized as “Chile’s Best Carmenere” and “The Choice from Peumo” in the 2016 edition of Descorchados, Chile’s leading wine guide, published annually by wine writer Patricio Tapia. Talented winemaker Ignacio Recabarren is responsible for this limited-production wine—just 200, 9-liter cases are made—which comes from the renowned Block 27 of the Peumo Vineyard in the Cachapoal Valley. The wine spent six months in barrels with up to 3 years of use, and, like the 2013 vintage, was bottled earlier than usual. The shor t time in the barrel, the use of fewer new barrels, and the early bottling translate into a wine with a more refreshing character, great acidity and balance, and a fruity mouthfeel that exceptionally reflects the variety and bounty of Peumo’s authentic terroir. To enhance fruit expression and typicity in the wine, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon were included in the final blend this year. “This wine has a distinctive style that has rewritten the rules for Carmenere in Chile. It’s fresher, with excellent acidity and balance, and a fruity mouthfeel that superbly reflects the variety and bounty of Peumo’s authentic terroir,” comments Ignacio Recabarren. This latest honor joins those handed down in past editions of the Descorchados guide to Terr unyo Carmenere, which was chosen on eight separate occasions as “Chile’s Best Carmenere,” ratifying winemaker Ignacio Recabarren’s commitment to seeking the best expression of the variety and the Peumo terroir, considered the cradle of Carmenere in Chile, and to ensuring the variety’s consistency among Concha y Toro wines.

2013 VINTAGE OF CABERNET SAUVIGNON LIMITED EDITION RELEASED JOINING THE GLOBAL TREND TOWARDS MORE REFRESHING AND ELEGANT WINES, THE TRADITIONAL MARQUES DE CASA CONCHA LINE HAS JUST RELEASED THE SECOND VINTAGE OF ITS CABERNET SAUVIGNON LIMITED EDITION. Viña Concha y Toro has released the second vintage of its Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon Limited Edition on the market. The intention of winemaker Marcelo Papa was to experiment with and produce a 1970s-style wine, meaning a fresher wine with less alcohol. To achieve this he selected some of the best blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Pirque Vineyard and harvested the grapes a couple of weeks earlier than usual. In order to respect the variety’s fruit and typicity while at the same time reproduce the lengthy aging of old-style wines, this wine spent 22 months in a 5000-liter Piedmont foudre. The result, according to its winemaker, is a wine with an amazing balance of fruit, structure, and tannins. The release of this new vintage reflects Marques de Casa Concha’s ongoing challenge to innovate and achieve wines that fully express the unique characteristics of each variety and its place of origin.

Tour activities included winemaker’s dinners at different restaurants, sales force training sessions, lunches with the press, and tastings of some of Marcelo’s top wines.
The new developments the winemaker presented included the release of the 2013 vintage of Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon Limited Edition. During the tastings, Papa also presented the latest innovations in the production of Cabernet Sauvignon, such as earlier harvests, more moderate use of oak, and experimentation with aging in Piedmont foudres. “The tour was a huge success, and having the oppor tunity to present and taste the brand’s wines with clients, consumers, well known wine critics, and members of the press was ver y gratifying, both for myself and for Marques de Casa Concha,” commented Marcelo.

ASIA
PRESS, CONSUMER, AND ON-TRADE MEETINGS DURING MARCELO PAPA’S ASIA TOUR THE WINEMAKER ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE 2015 DESCORCHADOS CHINA TOUR AND THE EXCLUSIVE DECANTER FINE WINE ENCOUNTER.
Once again winemaker Marcelo Papa was able to visit China and meet with contacts in the Japanese and Chinese markets. This time he spent three days in two cities to share all the latest from Marques de Casa Concha. The brand’s activities began in Tokyo on November 26, when Marcelo Papa led a seminar for sommeliers and other wine professionals in which he focused on the Marques de Casa Concha four different varieties—Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Carmenere, and Cabernet Sauvignon. He then visited three well-known restaurants in the city, where he shared with Marques de Casa Concha consumers and had time to sign some of the bottles available in the different locations. The day ended with an exclusive winemaker’s dinner for customers and wine writers at the New Otani Hotel, during which he presented his wines and talked about their different origins and terroirs.
Also on the 27th he met with Patricio Tapia once again to participate in the 2015 Decorchados China Tour. Marcelo’s final Marques de Casa Concha activity in the city was the Decanter Shanghai Fine Wine Encounter, one of the wine industry’s most important events and organized each year by the prestigious British magazine. The event took place in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pudong on November 28. “The tour was a total success, and the excellent reception on the par t of the customers, consumers, and specialized press confirmed that Marques de Casa Concha is an increasingly established brand in the Asian market. Fur thermore, we are ver y proud to have represented Chile in Descorchados China and Decanter—both events were very gratifying, both for me personally and for Concha y Toro,” Marcelo said.
Marcelo’s next stop was Shanghai. On November 27 he led an event for journalists and customers along with one of Chile’s leading wine writers, Patricio Tapia, and Joshua Greene of the US magazine Wine & Spirits.

Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, though guests also had the opportunity to taste the line’s Merlot, Carmenere and Syrah. “I saw quite a lot of interest in the wines and a desire for more information about the brand, and about Chile. I realized that Danish consumers prefer moderately expensive wines and have quite well defined tastes. It was a wonderful experience,” commented Sabja at the end of his visit.
VIGNO
CARIGNAN FROM CONCHA Y TORO RELEASES SECOND VINTAGE ON THE MARKET FROM THE HAND OF WINEMAKER HÉCTOR URZÚA COMES THE SECOND VINTAGE OF VIGNO, A CARIGNAN FROM OLD VINES IN THE CAUQUENES ZONE. As part of Viña Concha y Toro’s ongoing support of the Chilean wine industry, and further proof of the company’s commitment to being an innovative frontrunner, the company has released the second vintage of its Carignan, VIGNO, on the market. VIGNO brings together Chilean wine producers and winegrowers in order to take advantage of the potential of old Carignan vines planted in the Maule Valley’s Cauquenes sector. “Our work with the winegrowers consists basically of monitoring, we don’t need to intervene, as nature has already done all of the hard work,” comments Héctor Urzúa, the winemaker in charge of the project. This Carignan comes from the Patillo and Los Postes vineyards, located in the southwestern par t of Cauquenes, about 30 kilometers from the Pacific coast in the Maule Valley. The headtrained, dry-farmed vines are more than 60 years old. The clay soil has abundant granite and low fertility. The climate features high daytime temperatures, but the coastal winds and cool nights favor the development of this variety. “It’s a new world for us as winemakers, much closer to the earth, to the land. They are small vineyards, one or two hectares each, so you have to really understand them well in order to vinify. It’s a wonderful, interesting challenge,” adds, Héctor. VIGNO 2014 has completed its first stretch in used barrels, and is now resting in 5000-liter untoasted foudres. The idea is to keep it vibrant until it is released onto the market in 2016. Vinification was quite light-handed, careful, and non-extractive to allow the Carignan to show its best. “With the Carignan, much more than with other varieties, the idea is to faithfully express what the terroir has to offer,” affirms the winemaker. Regarding this second vintage in particular, Héctor comments: “It’s a wine that has retained the qualities of the 2013 vintage, but with a more concentrated palate, I’d say. It’s fresh and vibrant, with rich natural acidity, a very attractive color, and notes of berries and black fruit. We’ve been working hand in hand with Carignan, and each new vintage is better than the last.”

MALBEC EARNS OUTSTANDING SCORES IN TRADE PUBLICATIONS THE 2012 VINTAGE WAS NAMED “BEST MALBEC OF 2015” IN THE 2016 LA CAV GUIDE TO TABLE WINES, WHILE THE 2013 VINTAGE WAS AWARDED 92 POINTS BY U.S. CRITIC JAMES SUCKLING. The 2012 vintage of Gran Reserva Serie Riberas Malbec had a distinguished showing in the latest (2016) edition of the table wine guide, Mesa de Cata, recently published by Chilean wine magazine La CAV. The wine, crafted by winemaker Marcio Ramírez, obtained a solid 92 points and was crowned Best Malbec of 2015. This major honor goes hand in hand with another for the 2013 vintage, which also earned 92 points in the latest report that U.S. wine critic James Suckling published on his website on November 18. Gran Reserva Serie Riberas Malbec is grown in the Palo Santo Vineyard, situated on the southern bank of the Tinguiririca River in the Colchagua Valley. The soils here are colluvial, gently sloping, and granitic in origin. Temperatures are moderated by the influence of the Tinguiririca River and breezes from the coast. These conditions make this the ideal terroir for growing Malbec, delivering extremely powerful, concentrated wines with great fruit expression and standout notes of blueberries, plums, chocolate, and spices.
