DON MELCHOR 2010: THE ONLY CHILEAN PARTICIPANT AMONG THE WORLD’S FINEST WINES IN THE “WINE EXPERIENCE” ORGANIZED BY THE INFLUENTIAL US MAGAZINE WINE SPECTATOR, THE EVENT TOOK PLACE OCTOBER 22–24 IN NEW YORK CITY AND ATTRACTED KEY MEMBERS OF THE INDUSTRY AND MORE THAN 2,000 CONSUMERS.

Important international winemakers and producers, along with consumers from around the world, gathered in New York for three days for the “Wine Experience,” one of the most important and widely recognized wine events of the year, organized by the US magazine Wine Spectator. Don Melchor 2010 was present for the 35th version of this important event in New York City as wine number 9 on the magazine’s Top 10 list of the best wines in the world, published in December 2014. Don Melchor is the only Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon to have appeared on the Top 10 list three times, for its 2001, 2003, and 2010 vintages—a true milestone for the Chilean wine industry.

Viña Concha y Toro Wines of Origin Marketing Manager Isabel Guilisasti presented Don Melchor, the only Chilean wine among this outstanding group. Chile’s oldest and best-known icon Cabernet Sauvignon has earned this place of privilege as the result of more than 25 years of impeccable history, enological excellence, and consistency. “I am absolutely certain that Don Melchor is among the best Cabernet Sauvignons in the world. Its quality and consistency are indisputable and have not only made it a world-class wine, but have established it as a reference in the world’s wine industry,” said Guilisasti.

DON MELCHOR AND FRENCH CELEBRITY CHEF JOIN FOR AN UNPRECEDENTED CULINARY CHALLENGE THREE-MICHELIN-STAR CHEF BRUNO MÉNARD CREATED AN INNOVATIVE FIVE-COURSE MENU TO ACCOMPANY FIVE VINTAGES OF DON MELCHOR. THE CULINARY CHALLENGE DEMONSTRATES THAT THANKS TO ITS STYLE AND COMPLEXITY, THE ICON CABERNET SAUVIGNON OF CHILE CAN BE PAIRED WITH A COMPLETE DINNER FROM BEGINNING TO END.

The Don Melchor Culinary Challenge started in Vietnam on October 29 with celebrity chef Bruno Ménard of the three-Michelin-star L’Oiser Restaurant in Tokyo. Chef Ménard assumed the role of Don Melchor Brand Ambassador in 2015. Ménard created an extraordinary and innovative pairing dinner that matched five recipes with five historic vintages of Don Melchor—the 2011, 2010, 2007, 1990, and 1988. The dishes included eggs infused with Laspang Souchong tea with dried meat and piquillo pepper puree, sautéed foie gras with caramelized almonds and ginger, sautéed surf and turf-style lobster, slow-cooked wagyu (kobe) beef with carrot puree perfumed with kaffir limes, and strawberry texture. “It wasn’t easy to pair this incredible wine with the type of foods that I make. You realize immediately that the wine is absolutely brilliant and see that the winemaker also expresses sensations through the wine as well as a specific terroir. What we created was absolutely unique and custom tailored through the perfect pairing with five vintages of Don Melchor,” Ménard said of the challenge.

In Enrique Tirado’s opinion, “This challenge shows Don Melchor’s aging potential and exquisite complexity. Its sophisticated aromatic and flavor profiles make it a versatile wine that is able to “shift” to harmonize perfectly with the interesting diversity of dishes that chef Mènard proposes.” “Don Melchor Culinary Challenge” itinerary: October 29: Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City Sheraton Hotel October 31: Singapur, Grand Hyatt Hotel in association with Matter of Taste, Wine Advocate November 10: Tokyo, Japan, Tokyo, Yokohama Bay Sheraton Hotel and Towers November 12: Osaka, Japan, The Ritz-Carlton November 20: Seoul, Korea, Lotte World Hotel December 2: Macao, City of Dreams – The Tasting Room December 15: Taipei, Taiwan, Mandarin Oriental

OPINION

More Work than Glamour While it may be true that an excellent wine arouses emotions akin to reading a story or listening to a good musical composition, it is not that the bottles are the result of a fit of genius. In a time of rankings and a thirst for media figures, it is easy to fall prey to the temptation to want to turn winemakers into artists, especially when the bottles are expensive and the category is icon. The reality is less glamorous, although fortunately, more interesting. A remarkable wine requires a lot of work and years of observing the vines. It is necessary to understand just the right time to harvest and which sectors of the vineyard give the best grapes. And because the weather is different each year, the challenge is a new one. And this is why the three decades of work behind Don Melchor
