CONCHA Y TORO LEADS THE LATEST REPORT ON CHILE IN ROBERT PARKER’S WINE ADVOCATE CARMÍN DE PEUMO IS ONCE AGAIN CROWNED THE BEST CARMENERE OF CHILE AND DON MELCHOR THE BEST CABERNET SAUVIGNON OF ALTO MAIPO VALLEY. CONCHA Y TORO HEADS THE LIST WITH THE MOST WINES RANKED 90+ POINTS. With 23 wines ranked 90 or more points in the latest report on Chile published on US wine critic Robert Parker’s web site, The Wine Advocate, Concha y Toro continues to be a benchmark in the Chilean wine industry. Among the highlights were the 94 points earned by winemaker Enrique Tirado’s 2011 Don Melchor, making it the top-scoring Cabernet Sauvignon from the Alto Maipo Valley on an extensive list of wines tasted. The 2013 vintage of Carmín de Peumo, made by the winemaker Ignacio Recabarren, earned 95 points and stood out as the best

Carmenere of Chile and one of the top 10 in the report. The 2012 vintage earned an outstanding 93 points. These accolades are added to Carmín de Peumo’s long list of historic achievements in The Wine Advocate, including earning the highest score for any Chilean wine three times. During the year of its debut, the two new Sauvignon Blancs in the Ultra Premium Gravas line—2014 Gravas Blancas and 2014 Gravas Blancas Fumé—stood our as the best white wines from the Bío-Bío Valley.


Another new wine by Ignacio Recabarren, the 2014 Terrunyo Merlot Lot Nº1, earned 91+ points, earning its position as Chile’s best Merlot.

SUCCESSFUL DINNER WRAPS UP THE “DON MELCHOR CULINARY CHALLENGE” IN SHANGHAI THANKS TO THE SUCCESS OF THE CLOSING EVENT, THE FIRST CHILEAN ICON WINE NOW APPEARS ON THE WINE LIST OF A FIVE-STAR HOTEL IN SHANGHAI’S FAMOUS FINANCIAL DISTRICT, THE BUND.

January 19, 2016, marked an end to a three-month culinary tour starring the Don Melchor icon wine and French celebrity chef Bruno Ménard, recognized with three Michelin stars in one of Tokyo’s most famous restaurants. The unprecedented culinary challenge consisted of pairing a five-course menu with five outstanding vintages of Don Melchor: 2011, 2010, 2007, 1990, and 1988. The Waldorf Astoria in the city’s financial district, The Bund, was the venue chosen for the closing event of this highly successful endeavor. Hundreds of high-profile guests, including key accounts from

Summergate, Concha y Toro’s distributor in China, attended the event that resulted in a Chilean icon wine being listed in this legendary hotel. The victorious tour of Asia, which began in October 2015, also went to Vietnam, Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, Soule, Macao, and Taiwan. The dinners were extremely well received and attracted a large number of guests in each city. The success with which the challenge concluded confirms that Don Melchor continues to be Asia’s favorite Chilean icon wine.

ENRIQUE TIRADO PRESENTED THE LATEST FROM DON MELCHOR TO THE SPECIALIZED PRESS IN NEW YORK CITY DURING HIS TRIP, THE WINEMAKER MET WITH THE EDITORS OF WINE SPECTATOR AND VINOUS TO TASTE THE LATEST VINTAGES OF DON MELCHOR.

Enrique Tirado was in New York City on January 13–15 to meet with the press as part of the launch of the 2012 vintage of Chile’s first icon wine, Don Melchor. He first met with Josh Raynolds of the Vinous web site at Del Frisco’s Steakhouse, one of the three top-earning restaurants in the United States, and whose complete wine list includes Don Melchor. The two tasted the 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages as well as barrel sample of the 2015 vintage. Raynolds was quite enthusiastic about meeting with Enrique and learning the history behind Don Melchor.

The winemaker also had the opportunity to meet with the editor of the influential Wine Spectator magazine, Kim Marcus, for a tasting at the publication’s offices, followed by a lunch at the La Masseria Restaurant. The tasting session consisted of the 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages of Don Melchor and barrels samples of the 2015 vintage. Enrique also presented the 2011 and 2014 vintages of the Concha y Toro’s ultra premium Syrah, Gravas del Maipo.

UK WINE EXPERTS MET WITH CONCHA Y TORO WINEMAKERS RENOWNED BRITISH SOMMELIERS AND WINE WRITERS FROM THE DECANTER, HARPERS, THE DRINKS BUSINESS MAGAZINES AND WINE WHOLESALER MATTHEW CLARK VISITED THE CONCHA Y TORO WINERY IN PIRQUE IN MID-JANUARY.

On January 12 and 15 Viña Concha y Toro hosted a visit from four celebrated British wine experts—John Stimpfig, editorial content director of Decanter magazine; Erin Smith, deputy editor of Harpers; Lauren Eads, senior staff writer at The Drinks Business; and Sophie Birkbeck, sales account manager at Matthew Clark.

interest in learning more about the production of Carmenere in Peumo and the vinification process of this exceptional variety. As usual in his tastings, Ignacio also showed them some of his other recent projects, including the 2015 Terrunyo Sauvignon Blanc and the 2013 Terrunyo Cabernet Sauvignon.

The visit began on January 12 with a tour of the century-old winery in Pirque and the legendary vineyard that surrounds it. The guests then met with Don Melchor winemaker Enrique Tirado, who told them about the virtues of the Puente Alto terroir and the unique and distinctive characteristics it imprints upon Chile’s icon Cabernet Sauvignon.

Isabel Guilisasti, marketing manager for Wines of Origin, joined the group for lunch and talked a bit about the current situation and challenges for the Chilean wine industry. Lauren Eads, of The Drinks Business, shared the key points of the conversation in an article posted on the magazine’s web site on January 19.

Following Enrique’s presentation, the group tasted the 2011 and 2012 vintages of Don Melchor along with barrel samples from the 2015 vintage and the seven blocks from the Don Melchor Vineyard.

Finally, on January 15, the group met at the Concha y Toro wine shop on Alonso de Córdova where they tasted the complete range of Marques de Casa Concha wines and discovered the latest innovations that winemaker Marcelo Papa is implementing, especially with Cabernet Sauvignon.

US DISTRIBUTORS MEET IN CHILE AND TASTED BRANDS OF THE FINE WINES PORTFOLIO


REPRESENTANTIVES OF THE RNDC DISTRIBUTORS AND THE EXCELSIOR WINE COMPANY TRAVELED TO CHILE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE COMPANY’S PREMIUM AND SUPERIOR BRANDS. THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THEIR VISIT INCLUDED TASTINGS OF DON MELCHOR, MARQUES DE CASA CONCHA, AND GRAN RESERVA SERIE RIBERAS. Seventeen representatives of the Republic National Distributing Company (RNDC) and the Excelsior Wine Company, Concha y Toro’s subsidiary distribution company in the United States, were in Chile January 17–21. Proprietors and regional directors joined them to meet with those in charge of each brand and to taste the wines with the winemakers to become more familiar with the company’s fine wine portfolio.

The group visited Santiago, Zapallar, Casablanca, and Pirque, where they toured the winery, the vineyard, and participated in an unprecedented tasting of Don Melchor, guided by winemaker Enrique Tirado, who included the three vintages that have appeared on the Wine Spectator Top 10 list—2001. 2003, and 2010—along with the 2011 and 2012 vintages.

The participants also had the opportunity to taste part of the Marques de Casa Concha and Gran Reserva Serie Riberas lines, guided by Sebastián Rodríguez and Héctor Urzúa, respectively.

The convention helped strengthen the image of the focus brands in the United States, one of Concha y Toro’s most important markets.

BELGIAN IMPORTER VISITS CHILE WITH CONTEST WINNERS A DELEGATION OF SENIOR EXECUTIVES FROM CHACALLI, CONCHA Y TORO’S IMPORTER IN BELGIUM, AND STORE MANAGERS FROM THE DELHAIZE SUPERMARKET CHAIN VISITED CHILE AS THE PRIZE EARNED IN THE EXHIBITION AND SALES FORCE COMPETITION.


A commercial delegation of upper-level executives of Chacalli, Concha y Toro’s importer in Belgium, and managers of the Delhaize supermarket chain visited Chile January 18–20. The group was led by Wladimir Bratkowski, the CEO of Chacalli Fine Wines, Albert Neumark, CEO of Chacalli Holland, and Allan Pardoms, Senior Buyer for Delhaize. The visit was part of the prize granted to 15 store managers from the Delhaize chain after evaluating their wine exhibitions and the level of their sales forces. In addition to compensating the managers for their work and commitment, the objective of the trip was for them to gather first-hand information and knowledge about Chile and the Concha y Toro portfolio of wines.

The group’s activities included a visit to the Concha y Toro winery in Pirque, where the guests participated in a tasting of Marques de Casa Concha wines, led by winemaker Sebastián Rodríguez and another of Don Melchor, guided by winemaker Enrique Tirado. The group also visited Valparaíso, where they toured the city’s major attractions and were treated to lunch at one of the port’s most traditional restaurants, the Turri, with dishes paired with Terrunyo Sauvignon Blanc and Terrunyo Carmenere. Upon their return to Santiago, they wrapped up the trip with an entertaining “Evening with Marques de Casa Concha,” in which they tasted the most recent vintages of this traditional line from Concha y Toro.

OUTSTANDING BRITISH SOMMELIERS VISIT CONCHA Y TORO THE WINERY RECEIVED THE WINNERS OF THE “WINE BAR WAR UK” COMPETITION, ORGANIZED BY WINES OF CHILE IN LONDON, WHOSE PRIZE WAS A TRIP TO CHILE AND ITS MAJOR WINERIES.

On January 11 the sommeliers who won Wines of Chile’s “Wine Bar War UK” in London last year visited the Concha y Toro vineyards and winery in Pirque to taste the company’s Premium and Ultra Premium wines. The competition took place on June 29–30, 2015 as part of the “Imbibe Live” fair and consisted of a challenge in which 16 distinguished sommeliers had to create the best Chilean wine bar in a single day. The prize was a trip to Chile and its major wineries. The winning sommeliers—Erick Simonics, Emanuel Pesqueira, Agustin Trapero, and Richard Lockstone—visited Concha y Toro in Pirque and were received with an exclusive tasting menu prepared by the sommelier and Concha y Toro Wine Ambassador Martín Durán and paired with wines from the Wines of Origin portfolio.

The lunch consisted of 16 different dishes, including a hake and shrimp ceviche accompanied by the 2014 Marques de Casa Concha Sauvignon Blanc, a cold carrot soup with a shot of scallops paired with the 2014 Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay, and wasabi-stuffed octopus with yellow chili sauce served with the 2014 Marques de Casa Concha Pinot Noir.

Concha y Toro’s Wines of Origin portfolio earned scores of 90 or more points from specialized media around the world 115 times in 2015, making it once again Chile’s most successful winery and positions the Wines of Origin portfolio at the global level. The year’s accolades included 94 points for the 2011 Don Melchor in Wine Spectator and the Wine Advocate, 94 points for the 2012

Carmín de Peumo in Wines Spectator, also 94 points for the 2013 Terrunyo Carmenere Lot Nº1 in Wine & Spirits, and 93 points for the 2013 Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon from wine critic James Suckling. This type of performance year after year stands as evidence of the exceptional quality and solid consistency that our wines are known for and allows Concha y Toro to maintain its leading position in the wine industry in Chile and abroad.

YEAR-END ACTIVATIONS The year-end promotional activities in Panama included a Marques de Casa Concha campaign in the El Rey, Ribas Smith, and 99 supermarkets. Inviting product displays and price cards were designed to accompany the offer of innovative packs of wine and corkscrews. The Felipe Motta wine shops featured important exhibitions, primarily of Marques de Casa Concha wines, a favorite among Panamanian consumers for Christmas gift giving.

Cada invitado era recibido con una copa flauta de... ¿Champagne rosé? Mal que mal, se trataba del famoso Champagne Room del Hotel Manila, recientemente remodelado y tan hermoso como siempre (…).

Uno no rechaza una oportunidad de trabajar con un Marqués, especialmente con uno como este.

Cinco vinos deliciosos para probar en 2016

Por eso, las uvas se cultivan en viñedos propios, de calidad prémium, Nuestra editora de comidas y vinos, Natasha Heard, escoge cinco en lugares ideales para cada variedad en particular. El talentoso enólogo Marcelo Papa ha estado vinos deliciosos para disfrutar este año. a cargo de elaborar los vinos de Marqués desde 1999. Bajo su dirección, la línea Marqués de Casa Concha ha merecido alabanzas de críticos de vino y ha obtenido los más prestigiosos Marqués de Casa Concha, Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 premios de la industria (…).

(…) Y en eso esbozó una aún mayor sonrisa. ¡Qué alivio! La combinación es ganadora, dijo. Y así fue el resto de los maridajes después de este. Mero chileno al horno con el Marqués de Casa Concha Chardonnay 2013; chuletas de ternera australianas a la parrilla con el Marqués de Casa Concha Carmenère 2012. El menú del chef ejecutivo Konrad Walter presentó sabores directos que eran atrevidos, pero refinados. Los vinos de Marqués amplificaron o reflejaron esos sabores de manera brillante. Estos son, después de todo, vinos amigables con la comida que también han alcanzado de manera consistente los 90 puntos de los críticos. (La edición de marzo de 2015 de la revista Decanter citó al Marqués de Casa Concha Chardonnay 2012 como uno de los mejores chardonnay del mundo). Y esa noche, el que resultó una revelación fue el Marqués Chardonnay 2013: amplio, cremoso, intenso, con reminiscencias de crema de limón y nueces tostadas. Las uvas para este vino vienen de Llanuras de Camarico, un viñedo único en el Valle del Limarí, conocido por sus terraza aluviales y sus suelos calcáreos. Cosechado a mano y fermentado en barricas, el vino se guarda sobre sus lías durante 11 meses en una combinación de barricas borgoñonas nuevas y usadas.
