The year begins on a high with the climax of the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race stopover with the fiercely contested In Port race on January 2 and fleet departure towards Sanya in China on January 3. The celebrations at our Destination Village on the Corniche Breakwater set the tone for things to come. The action switches to Manarat Al Saadiyat on Saadiyat Island on January 7 for a solo piano recital by Georgia’s celebrated musician Khatia Buniatishvili. This performance is part of the wider Abu Dhabi Classics, an annual international concert series that runs across the emirate until May. January certainly is a time for celebrations as we also mark the 10th anniversary of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship which, with its prize purse of US$2.7 million, is the richest event within Gulf Swing. Over the past decade, the event, with the iconic Abu Dhabi Golf Club clubhouse as its backdrop, has thrown up endless surprises. Will this year be any different? It comes as no revelation, though, that the talent on show is as strong as ever with world number one, Rory McIlroy, three-times Abu Dhabi winner Martin Kaymer, Sweden’s strong man Henrik Stenson, Italian prodigy Matteo Manassero all competing for the title along with American wonder boy Rickie Fowler also making his Abu Dhabi debut. While all this is going on, we’re also preparing for the debut of our Abu Dhabi Food Festival in February. There will be three events within the festival that will spill over to the great outdoors – Emirati Kitchen through which visitors will be able to taste traditional cuisine, the annual Gourmet Abu Dhabi for a sample of fine dining with celebrity chefs and StreetFeast, when 20 food trucks will head out to Madinat Zayed and the Corniche to serve up dishes from around the world. I hope you have a happy, productive and prosperous year.

Abu Dhabi has managed to develop into a global business hub while maintaining its cultural identity. One of the most famous attractions is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, while another place to experience the culture of the UAE is Al Ain. It boasts a special history as the birthplace of the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and is a unique oasis of green gardens with avenues of date palms along the main streets. Here you can visit the daily camel market and Al Ain Zoo afterwards for a fun afternoon with the family. Art and culture is very important to Abu Dhabi. The most recent addition to the museum scene is the Manarat Al Saadiyat on Saadiyat Island which will also be the location of Louvre Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Opera House of Abu Dhabi over the next few years. I always recommend JetLev Flyer for visitors looking for thrills. The first water sport of its kind in the UAE, the JetLev Flyer is basically a 16-kilogramme carbon fibre backpack with a long hose that can propel people up to 10 metres in the air. It makes you feel like a superhero rocketing towards the sky. For a romantic dinner, visitors don’t have to look further than BBQ Al Qasr at Emirates Palace. This special al fresco restaurant boasts the most romantic table in the city in a little gazebo out on the beach. The best shopping destination is The Galleria on Al Maryah Island which houses exclusive brands including Louis Vuitton, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana and others. For the best views, visit the Observation Deck at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. It’s the only place where you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the city. However, a safari drive out into the desert should not be missed as a photo at sunset makes a great keepsake.

Shooting star Successful Emirati director Ali Mustafa is at the forefront of a new era in Arab cinema Words by
Zeina Eid
When City of Life was released in 2009, it marked a watershed moment for the region’s film industry. Telling the story of local life in Dubai, the movie propelled Emirati director Ali Mustafa into the spotlight. Through Mustafa’s eyes, audiences were shown the emirate from a truly unique perspective, offering fresh insights into the social and cultural landscape. The film’s many successes also saw Dubai seriously considered as a viable destination for movie production and has since sparked a series of big-budget projects. As the region’s film industry continues to go from strength to strength, talents such as Mustafa are at the forefront of a new wave of Arab cinema talent that’s paving the way for the emergence of a burgeoning film industry in the UAE. Passionate about cinema for decades, Mustafa recalls being fascinated by the camera at a young age. “When I was nine years old, I started making amateur films with my siblings and friends. I also loved watching movies from my father’s personal collection. I remember being particularly amazed by Star Wars and from that moment on, I realised I was destined to make movies,” he tells Concierge.

In the absence of a specialised filmmaking institute in Dubai, Mustafa travelled to London in 2003 to complete his masters degree at the prestigious London Film School. The experience taught the fledgling filmmaker how to turn his natural talent into a vocation. For his graduation movie, he created a candid portrait of a little boy’s relationship with Islam and tradition. Entitled Under the Sun, it went on to be screened at a host of international film festivals in Europe and America and won the Emirates Film Competition in 2006. A few years later, Mustafa’s career was elevated almost overnight when his film City of Life hit screens in the UAE. Despite facing competition from the summer’s Hollywood blockbusters, Mustafa’s remarkable account of the struggles of an Indian taxi driver, European flight attendant and young Emirati living in Dubai drew large audiences to theatres and proved to be a huge UAE box office hit. On its international release, audiences around the world were then given the opportunity to see Dubai from a truly unique perspective, through the eyes of an Emirati. The moving drama also earned Mustafa the Best Director award at the Dubai International Film Festival. Now building on the film’s success, Mustafa is poised for further acclaim with his second feature film, From A to B that highlights the UAE capital. The movie enjoyed its world premiere at the 2014 edition of Abu Dhabi Film Festival and has been

released in cinemas across the country this month. “I feel I have grown as a director since City of Life, in terms of technique, script writing and working with actors,” says Mustafa. “You can only tell stories that you know best. I feel that people should be able to relate to what you’re saying.” Just as honest and transparent a film as his debut hit, the movie does depart from Mustafa’s dark style with its lighter road-trip theme. “The road trip is a genre that has never been done before in Arab cinema, so I thought it was an interesting idea,” says Mustafa. “After shedding light
on Dubai, I wanted to showcase Abu Dhabi and the many geographic, architectural, historical and cultural dimensions of the wider region, from the Liwa desert and the modern landmarks of the Emirati capital, to ancient Petra and the stunning scenery of Wadi Rum, culminating in the lively nightlife of Beirut; an incredibly vibrant city that I adore.” The movie also marks Mustafa’s first foray into comedy, which he says was no easy feat. “Comedy is one of the hardest genres to master. It’s easy to make viewers cry, but it’s very tough to make them laugh. I still also wanted the movie to remain realistic, as life can’t simply be a string of happy moments. One is bound to experience several challenges. “I don’t like to impose a certain message or meaning on viewers. I want them to look at the film through their own eyes and make of it what they see and feel,” he explains. Despite high hopes resting on his shoulders after the standards set with City of Life, Mustafa remains quietly confident about his second project which has just hit screens. “I didn’t feel nervous when From A to B hit the screens. It was too late to do anything then. It was out of my hands. “I am a perfectionist by nature and that means I spend a great deal of my time making sure everything is just right, from casting the actors and scouting the locations, to choosing the costumes and selecting the

right angle. I am also influenced by great directors. I admire David Fincher for his technical prowess and Sam Mendes for his choice of angle and scene setting. I am also a big fan of Syrian director Moustapha Akkad and his emotionally charged style.” Having grown up in Dubai, life in the UAE is often a source of inspiration for Mustafa, who loves the city’s eclectic mixture of people and the excitement that comes from the many international events that draw visitors from all over the world. In particular, every year, he looks forward to attending and supporting the Abu Dhabi Film Festival and Dubai International Film Festival. “These events have truly put the UAE on the international movie map. They have come to represent a unique platform that shines a light on the burgeoning film industry in this country and in the wider region. Both events are vitally important as a showcase for the incredible talent here in the Middle East”.
Giving something back to the community is also important for the director, who uses his talents for events and projects with Oxfam. Mustafa recently produced and starred in a short documentary film to help raise awareness on social issues in Africa. As an avid follower of global cinematic trends, Mustafa admits that his ambitions now go beyond the Gulf. “I do see myself one day directing a Hollywood production with an all-star cast. I have inherited this attitude from my mother who is a source of inspiration and a real go-getter. She is my role model because of all the things she has achieved in her life, but one must remain humble. It doesn’t really matter where I will be in the future as long as I am making movies,” he says. With From A to B benefiting from the backing of Abu Dhabi media initiative twofour54 as well as investment from Image Nation, the arm of Abu Dhabi Media behind several recent hit movies such as Contagion,

Flight, The Double and Fair Game, comes a vote of confidence in Mustafa’s ability to create films that are not only relevant for the community but also commercial successes. For the young director, the support is a source of great pride and “proof of the growing local film industry”. Mustafa believes in the potential of the Middle East’s film industry, but is also quick to admit that there still is a long road ahead for Arab cinema. “I think more needs to be done to increase the output of movies from this part of the world and to release at least five films every year, instead of one every two years. Arab movies should also strive to address an international audience. We are in the movie business after all and the commercial aspect is also very important. More exposure for movies means higher revenues and that can help to guarantee the longevity and sustainability of the industry,” he explains. “I do hope that, as filmmaking in Dubai continues to develop, the experiences I have had will encourage more local directors to follow suit.”

A simpler time Despite the harsh conditions, small populations have been making the UAE desert their home for thousands of years WORDS BY
CHARLOT T E VAN DE N BROUCQ UE
While summer temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and sand dunes stretch in every direction as far as the eye can see, it’s hard to believe that people have lived in UAE desert since the third millennium BCE. Before the now-cosmopolitan cities of the seven emirates emerged in the middle of the last century, the wild landscape offered few resources to its inhabitants. The adjacent Arabian Gulf with its fish supplies, small herds of gazelle indigenous to this region, the freshwater springs of Jebel Hafeet – the UAE’s tallest mountain – and a number of small oases scattered throughout the desert were all they had to go on. It was evidently enough, though, to sustain a resilient nomadic population who managed to farm dates and vegetables as well as raise animals on the arid land.

For hundreds of years the native Bani Yas tribe navigated its way through this harsh environment and created an organised and successful population with over 20 subsections. Known as Bedouin, meaning ‘desert dwellers’, the tribe was originally based at Liwa Oasis 150 kilometres from the city of Abu Dhabi. Matar Al-Mansoori’s ancestors have been living as Bedouin in this area for centuries and he too grew up in this fascinating culture. Now the CEO of Al Badeyah Eyes Tourism, his aim is to keep the UAE’s heritage, culture and traditions alive and invite others to experience them at an authentic desert safari camp in Abu Dhabi emirate. “I grew up in a typical Bedouin community that remains close to traditional ways of life where people cannot live without their heritage” he reveals. While Al-Mansoori spent term time attending school away from the community he spent the weekends and holidays back in the camp. “I used to spend my summer vacation in Liwa Oasis driving my parents to visit our farm in the desert to collect daily camel milk for our house. In the morning I used to drive to my parents’ oasis to clean and water the palm trees and to gather dates in the summer.”

In the unbearable heat of the summer the community retreated under the shade of palms growing around the oases to keep cool
MICHAEL AND RENEE HAMILTON-CLARK
Speaking of the Bedouin life that his ancestors would have known, he says: “Life was hard in the past as it was difficult to grow crops, but they were able to plant palm trees, grasses and some fruits in specific places. Diet consisted mainly of fresh fish, dry fish, camel, goat and sheep meat, rabbits and birds but they were sometimes able to supplement this with bread, rice and other foods that were brought by sea traders from neighbouring countries.” Accommodation was simple and consisted of palm-frond barasti
settlements made of mud, leaves and goat hair. In the unbearable heat of the summer the community retreated under the shade of palms growing around the oases to keep cool. Legend has it that while on a hunting trip a group of Bedouin from the Bani Yas tribe living at Liwa Oasis in the heart of the desert stalked a deer all the way to the shoreline. What they found here was to change the course of history and create the beginning of life as we know it in the UAE today. The area was made up of

many islands with huge mangroves and a plentiful supply of fresh water. In honour of the legend that brought them to this place it was named Abu Dhabi, which translates as ‘father of the deer’. Slowly but surely, more and more members of the Bani Yas tribe began to move here, including the Al Nahyan family, which still rules Abu Dhabi today. While Bedouin life might not be as difficult in areas as it once was, Al-Mansoori reveals: “Those living in these communities today tend to strike a balance between their traditional way of life and modern conveniences. Generally speaking there has been a big change in the lifestyle of Bedouin over the last 41 years. Most now live a more comfortable life with modern luxuries such as mobile phones, 4x4s and caravan houses in the desert complete with air conditioning and solar energy for lighting.” With easy access to food for animals available at nearby markets the way of life has certainly become less precarious but the old culture still remains. “In the morning Bedouin will check their palm tree farms, which are near to their houses and then spend their time in the afternoon in the desert looking after their camels and goats,” says Al-Mansoori. With modern life beckoning he adds: “Many former Bedouin now live in cities but they still maintain links to their history and heritage. Their children now go to schools, universities and work in the public and private sector, but they’re still proud to keep their traditional life which they inherited from their parents, grandparents and ancestors.”

Explorer Ibn Battuta, a man of wit and a thirst for adventure, continues to garner admiration WORDS BY
SANDRA TINARI
When celebrated Spanish composer Jordi Savall premiered the Ibn Battuta: The voyager of Islam concert at Abu Dhabi Classics – an annual international concert series that runs across the emirate until May – Battuta’s inspirational exploits were once more propelled into the spotlight. Born into a scholarly family in Tangier, Morocco, Abu Abdullah Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Lawati Al Tanji Ibn Battuta – popularly known as Ibn Battuta – set out on his adventures when he was just 20 years old as he embarked on a hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. This was to be the journey that signalled the beginning of his many renowned adventures. Concierge looks back on the life of one of the world’s greatest travellers.
In his footsteps Exploring land and sea, Ibn Battuta’s travels were extensive throughout the Middle East region. “In 1325, Ibn Battuta set out on the hajj, a return trip that in the early 14th century would usually take some 16 months. Instead of returning directly to Morocco, however, he continued his travels and didn’t return for another quarter of a century,” explains archaeologist Dr Alasdair Brooks, who works as a heritage consultant in the UAE, Qatar and Oman.
2
“Initially he was fulfilling his obligation to perform the hajj. After that, it was a combination of insatiable curiosity, a desire to find gainful employment and just occasionally, political expediency. For example, his famous trip to China was initially at the behest of the Sultan of Delhi, who employed Ibn Battuta as a qadi (judge) and asked him to serve as an ambassador to Mongol China,” says Brooks. He travelled by land from Morocco to Mecca via North Africa and Syria. He then sailed from Jeddah to Tanzania in East Africa and back to Mecca via Oman and the Arabian Gulf, rarely choosing the most direct routes. Ibn Battuta then left the Arabian Peninsula for Delhi to seek employment with Sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq. The route took in the eastern Mediterranean, Anatolia, the Caspian Sea, Byzantine Constantinople (his first time outside Muslim lands), Bokhara, Samarkand and even Afghanistan. Ibn Battuta later journeyed to China via the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka, modern Bangladesh, Maldives and Sumatra in an adventure that took well over a year. While in China, he explored lands between Beijing and the far south before embarking on a three-year trip back to Morocco via the Strait of Hormuz, Basra and Damascus. Finally, before returning to his homeland in 1354, Ibn Battuta spent four more years exploring the lands of Al Andalus (Islamic Spain) and the Mali Empire of West Africa. “He certainly was a great traveller and a scholar, driven by extraordinary curiosity about his world. As his exploits were mainly within the known Islamic world, with the

major exception of China and the brief visit to Byzantine Constantinople, Ibn Battuta’s journey is a symbol of the existing connectedness of that world,” says Brooks.

The vivid storytelling and detail of day-to-day life in Ibn Battuta’s memoir is said to considerably surpass the insight left behind by Marco Polo
Most of what is known about the man today is from his own work called Rihla which translates from Arabic to ‘journeys’. Because of this, he is regarded as one of the world’s first travel chroniclers as he recounted his tales to the scholar, Ibn Juzayy Al Kalbi, at the request of the Sultan of Morocco. In his lifetime Battuta covered more than 75,000 miles, visiting the equivalent of more than 44 modern countries. A few of the places he visited are represented in Dubai’s themed shopping destination, Ibn Battuta Mall, that pays homage to the man’s travels with dedicated interactive exhibits. “The record of his journey, Rihla, is an unparalleled and invaluable record of the Islamic world and beyond during the 14th century. Ibn Battuta describes almost every conceivable aspect of human life in that age and left us a uniquely important and engagingly personal eye-witness account of a world that no one else explored and recorded in such detail. Rihla is a highly useful document for both historians and archaeologists precisely because of that detail,” Brooks says.
The vivid storytelling in Ibn Battuta’s memoir is said to surpass the insight left behind by Marco Polo. Any comparisons made between the two great travellers, however, are not necessarily fair, Brooks adds. “I understand why they are compared but it’s a comparison that perhaps sells Ibn Battuta short. For one thing, Ibn Battuta travelled further. Their experiences and motivations were also very different.”
Islamic hero Despite such extensive and well-documented adventures Ibn Battuta was not very well known beyond Africa and the Middle East. “The conventional 19th and 20th century western narrative was of brave European explorers searching unknown lands. Ibn Battuta doesn’t neatly fit into that model partly because he’s not a European and because his journeys reveal just how much of the world was already known to the Islamic civilisation before the great European explorations of the late 15th and 16 th centuries,” Brooks explains. “Fortunately, he is also much better known outside of the Middle East and North Africa now than he was 20 years ago.” With renewed interest in his stor y, Ibn Battuta still remains an important symbol of the impact of Islamic civilisation across cent u r ies a nd t he remarkable results of man’s exploration of the globe.

Cartier In 1904, Louis Cartier designed the first men’s wristwatch and, more than a century later, the French maison continues to innovate with collections for every style. In particular, many of Cartier’s timepieces reflect a strong creative and artistic aspect. This year, the Ronde Louis Cartier Filigree watch is another testament to the house’s artistry with a dial design that uses the centuries-old technique of filigree. Like working with delicate lace, the technique involves a goldsmith soldering precious wires to create an openwork grid with a desired motif – in this case panthers, whose spotted coats are woven from filigree elements of gold and platinum and set with diamonds to dramatic effect.

Luxury Swiss brand Baume & Mercier is well known for its fine timepieces that are the result of a more classic design approach, as evident in its Clifton Collection. This year marks the release of Baume & Mercier: Clifton Automatic Big Date and Power Reserve. Inspired by a 1950s model from the maison’s museum collection, the new self-winding design features an uncluttered dial with a big date display in an aperture at 12 o’clock. Fans of Baume & Mercier will also be pleased to know that the Hampton Collection – iconic for its rectangular-shaped dials – is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with the release of two new self-winding steel timepieces.
3
Greubel Forsey Having launched in 2004, Swiss brand Greubel Forsey may be relatively new to the watchmaking industry but it has already made a name for itself with inventive timepieces that use mostly tourbillons. It recently debuted QP à Equation that displayed all the indications of the perpetual calendar and has paved the way for yet more innovations. Three new timepieces will be launched by Greubel Forsey in 2015, including the stunning GMT Black with a titanium case and limited to just 22 pieces worldwide.

Combining the principles of Italian design and Swiss technology, Officine Panerai is known for producing precision timepieces. With a history that dates back to the 19th century as the exclusive supplier for the Royal Italian Navy, the brand’s watches exemplify the perfect blend of aesthetics and innovation. In 2015, updates to its signature lines include the Luminor 1950 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica. With a matt black ceramic case, the 44 millimetre watch is water-resistant and features a convenient flyback function.

Jaeger-LeCoultre
After making history with last year’s launch of Altiplano 900P, the thinnest luxury mechanical watch in the world, Swiss manufacturer Piaget was never expected to rest on its laurels. This year, Piaget reveals a brand new ultrathin hand-wound chronograph timepiece – Altiplano Chronograph. As the world’s thinnest hand-wound flyback chronograph at just 8.24 millimetres, the timepiece also boasts the thinnest movement in the family.
Swiss maison Jaeger-LeCoultre is looking to the sky with an astral theme that not only inspires the design of new watches but also takes on a functional element with lunar and zodiac calendars. There are several novelties releasing in 2015, including the new Duomètre Sphérotourbillon Moon that features a moon-phase indication designed to stay accurate for over 3,500 years, an elegant sphérotourbillon that turns on a tilted axis and a small seconds flyback system.

A. Lange & Söhne Founded in 1845, German high end watch manufacturers A. Lange & Söhne garnered a lot of attention at SIHH last year with stunning timepieces such as the 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar. This year A. Lange & Söhne is presenting three new models in the iconic Saxonia line that was first launched 20 years ago. Saxonia, Saxonia Automatic and Saxonia Dual Time all feature a refined dial design with subtle changes – the gold applied hour markers have been moved further towards the edge of the dial and are executed as double baton appliques at the hours of 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. The Saxonia Dual Time, in particular, is a key highlight from A. Lange & Söhne with an adjustable second zone time. It also sports a more elegant look with a reduced case size of 38.5 millimetres.

Luxury Swiss watch manufacturer Parmigiani Fleurier has never been shy of pushing the envelope of design as evident in its grand complication Toric and Bugatti models, yet the Tonda collection best encapsulates the refined Parmigiani Fleurier spirit. The Tonda 1950 watch, in particular, has long been celebrated for its elegant design and, this year, it received a bold makeover with a new Squelette edition. Tonda 1950 Squelette boasts an intricate open-worked dial which places the skeleton movement in the spotlight. Dials on men’s watches are entirely transparent while the ladies’ model features a lightly frosted finish.

French maison Van Cleef & Arpels never fails to amaze with creations that are always artistic and technically quite unique, such as the stunning Midnight Planetarium timepiece from the Poetic Complications collection unveiled at SIHH last year. For 2015, the house is taking inspiration from historical archives with its Cadenas watch that was created in 1935 with an iconic padlock design. Cadenas, which means lock in French, is the inspiration for nine new models this year. The jewellery watch now comes with alligator straps, gold bracelets, diamonds and mother-of-pearl dials.

In their element Concierge joins Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing in Cape Town and discovers renewed admiration for some of the world’s toughest athletes
Brave men battle through wind, rain and icy storms for weeks on end. They rest in shifts, cruelly awoken after a couple of hours of sleep to start work again in amazingly cramped conditions. And those are good days, because on others, they will get no sleep at all. This is the life of every athlete competing in the Volvo Ocean Race. Founded as the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973, Volvo Ocean Race is sailing’s greatest offshore competition and the longest sporting event in the world. There’s no other race where man is not just pitted against man, but also against nature in such a raw and frantic manner. In each of the seven Volvo Ocean Race teams, a crew of nine – including one onboard reporter – call a 20-metre carbonfibre boat home for nearly nine months as they circumnavigate their way across the globe. Before the action comes to a close in June, teams will have sailed across Africa, Asia, Australasia, the Americas and Europe and crossed four oceans. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, the emirate’s proud entry into the race, is one of the strongest contenders having won the first leg of the race from Alicante in Spain to Cape Town. Concierge was invited to South Africa by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority to give the team the heroes’ welcome they deserved and as we joined thousands of cheering fans at the Race Village on the V&A Waterfront, it was soon clear that these men were at the helm of sporting history.

This is the second time that Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing is competing, having made its debut in the 2011-12 edition. The team is led by one of Britain’s most successful sailors with two Olympic medals to his name, skipper Ian Walker. Despite the Middle East’s long maritime history, competitive sailing is still developing in the region but this relatively new team is already making waves internationally. “With every team sailing the same boat this edition, there is more focus on the people. It all comes down to them and how they work together,” explains Knut Frostad, CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race.
“The UAE and Abu Dhabi are not new to sailing – in fact, they have a strong tradition of sailing – but that’s not very well-known around the world. I spoke to a lot of people during my time in Abu Dhabi and they really understand the race very well because sailing is close to their hearts,” Frostad adds. UAE national Adil Khalid is one such person. Khalid is the first Arab sailor to compete in the race, making his Volvo Ocean Race debut when he was just 22 years old. The popular Olympian sailor is back with the team as a trimmer and helmsman in an experience that he describes as a living dream. “Sailing is my life, my passion and my dream. Honestly, I have been dreaming of sailing since I was a kid. It is something that is in my family’s blood – my grandfathers were involved with sea trading and pearl diving and they used to live next to the beach. Today, my family are very proud and fully support me during the race,” Khalid tells Concierge.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s boat is named Azzam – Arabic for determination – which Khalid embodies, especially as a strong role model for sailing within his local community. “It is a proud moment for me when I wave the UAE flag in every port,” he adds. “I have to promote my country around the world. I just want to show what you can achieve if you dream about it and work hard without giving up.” While Khalid is the only UAE national on board, the team has a very global outlook with seven different nationalities in the crew in a true ref lection of Abu Dhabi’s own diverse population.

“You’d think it would be a challenge to make everyone gel together with seven different nationalities but, in many ways, it helps. We’re not strangers – I’ve sailed around the world with some of these guys before – but we all also speak the same language, the language of international sailing,” explains Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing skipper Ian Walker. “We choose people who support each other and have a desire to win. I think we have the right people this race and if you look at Abu Dhabi, it’s a melting pot of different nationalities in business and in public life and everything works well,” adds Walker.

That team spirit and camaraderie is essential when they are at sea. The race is as much a test of mental and physical strength as it is sailing prowess. Braving tropical storms is one of the biggest challenges teams face but there’s also the risk of being grounded in a remote area out at sea, ripping a sail or crashing into icebergs along the way. During the second leg of the race from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi, team Vestas Wind from Denmark had to abandon their boat after it was beached on a remote Indian Ocean reef and the crew had to be transported to safety. In a mere instant, the team’s fate took a very different course and there is still no official confirmation on whether their boat can be salvaged and repaired in time for a possible re-entry in the race.

sound is difficult when there’s a lot of wind and water, but microphones and cameras are now better protected for the best quality.” Key moments such as when Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing won the first leg from Spain to Cape Town and secured a podium finish in the second leg to Abu Dhabi are broadcasted instantly on television and online. Teams know the race is not just about steering boats towards the f inish line. Every decision made onboard can mean the difference between not just victory and defeat but also life and death and skippers have to bravely shoulder that responsibility. “Steering a boat is second nature to me; I can steer it with my eyes shut. What goes through my mind all the time are questions such as: Are we best set up? Do we need to ease the sail? Are the weights in the right place? Then there’s the strategy that is worked out with the navigator. There’s a constant bombardment of questions in my mind,” says Ian Walker. “But there isn’t a second to waste – the journey has to go on.”

“The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the most extreme things anyone can do. It really is one of the last adventures on the planet that is completely uncontrolled because they are entirely on their own. We don’t have a rescue boat out there with the sailors and it’s all there for the world to see on television or online,” explains Volvo Ocean Race CEO, Knut Frostad. Having commanded a television audience of over a billion in the past, the 2014/15 edition of Volvo Ocean Race is set to break more records with a dedicated smartphone app pushing multimedia updates every few hours and a strong focus on social media engagement. Frostad explains that the introduction of the new unified boat has not just boosted competitiveness but also broadcasting capabilities. “The challenge in the past was to fit television equipment on boats not designed for it, so it never fit perfectly. This time around we built the television system first and then the boat around it. Picking up

Crossing four oceans and five continents over the course of nine months, Volvo Ocean Race is not just a test of sailing prowess but also mental and physical strength with teams spending weeks at a time alone at sea and surviving on limited supplies while battling rough seas. In each team there are eight sailors that have dedicated roles as trimmers, helmsmen, navigators, bowmen, pitmen and a skipper, including one non-sailing reporter who captures the entire experience onboard

By then all the teams would have sailed across Africa, Asia, Australasia, the Americas and Europe and crossed four oceans to circumnavigate their way around the world

As the curtain has closed on another action-packed Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, all eyes are now on the start of a brand new season
The atmosphere at Yas Marina Circuit in November was electric as 60,000 spectators cheered on Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton as he clinched the F1 drivers' championship for a second time at the highly-anticipated 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg dominated all through the 2014 season, but Hamilton eventually took home the title after Rosberg faced car trouble in the deciding race that saw him come in only at 14th place. 2015, however, marks the start of a brand new season in the sport which has already

The 66th edition of the Formula One World Championship begins with the Australian Grand Prix in the city of Melbourne on March 12. Fans are already looking forward to nine thrilling months of racing action and worldclass sportsmanship, and Abu Dhabi will once again proudly host the F1 season finale from November 27 to 29. Set to be another dramatic season, Lewis Hamilton will face tough competition this year from fellow Mercedes teammate and rival Nico Rosberg, Red Bull Racing driver Daniel Ricciardo and Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel among others in the battle to defend his title.

A place to...
Spend the day From cafés and restaurants to beaches and parks, Abu Dhabi Corniche offers something for everyone
ART IN FOCUS From January 8 to 17, Abu Dhabi Corniche will host an interactive art exhibit entitled Pulse Corniche. Specially designed by MexicanCanadian artist Rafael LozanoHemmer, every evening at the Corniche light beams controlled by the heartrate of visitors will be projected into the sky. In Europe, a city’s beachside promenade is often considered the centre of society. From Britain’s seaside town of Brighton with its wide seafront boardwalk to Monte Carlo in Monaco, home to the famous Promenade des Champions, throngs of crowds flock to socialise and relax by the sea. Abu Dhabi’s Corniche is no different. A meeting place of families and friends from all cultures, ‘The Corniche’, as it is referred to by local people, is six kilometres long and stretches from the Sheraton Abu Dhabi to just beyond the Hilton Abu Dhabi. Running alongside are the soft sands of Corniche Beach. Here, visitors can swim in the ocean under the watchful eyes of lifeguards or relax under the shade of umbrellas. Those looking to partake in more energetic activities can join in games of beach volleyball or hire a bicycle and set off down the dedicated cycle track. FunRideSports rents out bikes for AED30 for adults and AED20 for children per hour. Just off the beach, a variety of cafés and restaurants offer excellent spots to enjoy refreshments after a day in the sun before walking along the promenade and taking in stunning views of the Arabian Gulf and marina on one side and the towering buildings of Abu Dhabi city centre on the other.

Grecian dreams Abu Dhabi’s first true Greek restaurant, Acropolis, which opened recently in Le Méridien Abu Dhabi (02 6446666), serves an incredible range of specialities in a welcoming setting. Key ingredients are imported directly from Greece, so Acropolis’ menu mirrors what visitors would expect to find at the best restaurants in Athens. The spitiko tzatziki (Greek yoghurt with cucumber and garlic) and Makaronada thalassinon (seafood spaghetti with prawns, calamari, mussels and clams) are definite highlights. Acropolis’ chef Valsamis Konstantinos likes to take things a step further, however, and has devised a special Chef’s Secret selection of daily specials and seafood creations based on fresh market catches.

Concierge goes on the honey trail to discover the world’s most prized elixir
There is no way of knowing exactly when honey first came into existence but the world has been under its spell for centuries. Records of cave paintings in Spain from around 7000BCE highlight the first attempts at beekeeping while the ancient Egyptians and Romans considered honey not just a sweetener but a gift worthy of the Gods and a prized healing medicine. Its allure remains just as strong today.
Healthy honey For those unaware, honey is the result of a remarkable natural process. Bees collect nectar from flowers which is altered by the insect’s digestive enzymes and then regurgitated back in their hive which, over time, dries and becomes honey that is then harvested. Considered a superfood

for its extensive health properties, honey is an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, iron and calcium, plus antioxidants that help boost immunity. The type of honey produced depends entirely on the flowers honey bees visit and can differ in composition and nutritional value. Dark-coloured honey tends to have a fuller and more intense flavour and is packed with more nutrients than light-coloured honey that presents a much milder flavour. W hile raw honey is more expensive than traditional store-bought varieties, it is considered to be significantly healthier as the pasteurisation steps involved in the processing of most honey tends to destroy essential enzymes and nutrients. Besides, people have collected honey straight from beehives for centuries and is said to contain more than 80 different health-related proponents in its raw and unprocessed state.

Sidr honey
Taste test
T he world’s most expensive honey is sourced from the mountainous region of Hadhramaut in Yemen. It’s here that the famed sidr tree f lourishes and remains characteristic of the country. Sidr honey is made from bees that feed solely on the nectar from this tree and have a much shorter life span because of this. Also, the honey can only be harvested twice a year which adds to its high value. For thousands of years semi-nomadic Yemeni farmers have climbed mountains in Hadhramaut to collect sidr honey and this practice is still carried out today. No chemicals or machinery are used in the production process, with beekeepers using simple tools such as a knife and a little smoke from dried camel skins to manage hives. The honey is then poured, unheated and raw, into containers that preserve all the benefits of this syrup.
Abu Dhabi stores sell a fantastic range of honey sourced from different parts of the world. Balqees is one of the best companies for raw Yemeni honey and has a presence at many of the capital’s best shopping malls including Marina Mall and Al Wahda Mall. The company only works with top suppliers from Yemen through its headquarters in the capital of Sana’a. The Kingdom of Honey and Herbals behind Abu Dhabi Gold Souk is also worth a visit for its wide range. Top-quality sidr honey can cost upwards of AED1,000 for just one kilogramme and while cheaper versions are also available at markets, they are often mixed with other types of honey. Visitors who are worried about not obtaining pure sidr honey can identify the strength of its quality by ensuring the syrup is a dark golden colour with a thick texture and a buttery sweet and rich taste that is enhanced by a warm aroma.

Dhow spotting For centuries, traditional wooden boats known as dhows were relied upon to keep the UAE's bustling trading ports and markets afloat. Nowadays, waterways such as Dubai Creek and Abu Dhabi's Mina Zayed Port are key points to spot the remaining ships still in use gliding majestically on the water. They remain great reminders of the past and of the deep-rooted traditions that reaffirm the country's long-lasting connection to the sea.

SMOKE SIGNALS Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Abu Dhabi. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. The most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling 50 cigarettes. However, if you’re after an authentic experience, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply and to share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

The thirdlargest mosque in the world, this majestic structure is comprised of over 1,000 columns and 82 domes embellished with semi-precious stones, gold and marble. My life in Abu Dhabi American artist Maria Hegedus talks about life in the UAE capital
}
1
1 Souk Qaryat Al Beri 2 Hakkasan, Emirates Palace
Originally from South Carolina in the US, I have called Abu Dhabi home for nearly two years now. As an artist and owner of UAEMurals.com, I really am quite fortunate because this city is so inspiring. Most days you’ll find me visiting local markets because I love the cultural feel and the fact that I can buy the freshest catch of the day as well as fruits and vegetables. At weekends, I’ll take my children to the Corniche so they can play and have some ice cream or go to the beach and have a leisurely lunch outdoors afterwards when the weather is cooler. Speaking of food, I highly recommend Leopold’s of London on Reem Island for its wonderful dishes and atmosphere. I love visting for breakfast and always order my favourite, Tunisian eggs. India Palace on Salam Street offers traditional Indian dishes and I make it a point to order something different each time I visit. Cho Gao at Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi has the most amazing Thai food. For a special treat, Hakkasan at Emirates Palace is always nice. I typically meet friends at coffee shops or cafés and fortunately there are plenty
across the city to choose from. For a night out, Hilton Abu Dhabi’s Escape Lounge has pretty good food and the views of the city while smoking shisha are amazing. The same hotel also features Toki restaurant which is famous for its sushi, so there are a lot of options. W hile I do sometimes get homesick, Abu Dhabi City Golf Club recently held an American festival which was a lot of fun and it really felt like being back in the US with American food, live music and fun activities. Community events are very popular here. When family and friends visit, I recommend they check off the usual attractions such as Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Emirates Palace from their list and then make the time to stop by Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi, to smoke shisha – a cultural pastime here – and also pick up souvenirs and gifts from Souk Qaryat Al Beri. For shopping, I think Al Wahda Mall is one of the best because it has everything in one place. Abu Dhabi offers the chance to meet people from many different cultures and the city proudly displays its Emirati heritage. I will always treasure my time here.
