We in the UAE capital believe our homeland is something of a welcome contradiction for travellers. It is a place where deep-rooted Arabian heritage is deftly woven into a rich destination tapestry complete with luxury accommodation and world-class leisure attractions. Abu Dhabi is blessed with a diverse landscape. I hope during your stay you are able to experience as much of this variety as possible. In many ways, this emirate is several destinations in one, from the rustic charm of Al Ain, the birthplace of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the breathtaking vastness of the Liwa Desert in Al Gharbia with its mountainous dunes, to the energising pace and brightness of our capital city. We all share a desire to make you feel as welcome as possible and hope you leave with a positive, lasting impression of our homeland, traditions and people. In the pages of this magazine, you will find an overview of the emirate’s widespread appeal and I’m sure you will find much to inspire and entertain you. I wish you a relaxing, enjoyable and memorable stay in Abu Dhabi.

jewel in the crown ——— Harry Winston CEO Nayla Hayek discusses the House’s enduring legacy and reveals inspiring plans for the future

Affectionately dubbed ‘Jeweller to the Stars’, for decades it was unimaginable to speak of the glittering world of high-society weddings and red carpet soirées without visions of Harry Winston’s sparkling gems springing to mind. After all, when Marilyn Monroe referred to the jeweller in her famed serenade, Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend, it was clear the sentiment resonated with women across the globe. Fast-forward to present day and this romanticism still rings true with the New York City founded jeweller considered one of the industry’s most adored and respected brands. Established in 1932, the house was created by gem enthusiast Harry Winston, a man revered for his knack of identifying, and then acquiring, rare and precious jewels. Devoted to the ideal that it’s the gemstone rather than the metal or the material that should influence jewellery design, since the brand’s inception his creations have been coveted by some of the most iconic figures in modern day history. Nayla Hayek, Harry Winston CEO and chairwoman of Swatch Group reveals it’s this inimitable appeal that speaks to today’s woman. “Harry Winston is about timelessness. It is a brand with beloved traditions and a renowned aesthetic that has been, and will continue to be, admired by generations of fine jewellery connoisseurs.” Acquired by Swiss holding company Swatch Group in 2013, Hayek took to the helm of the illustrious house as CEO with pride.

“As one of the most prestigious luxury brands in the world today, it was very important that we maintain the integrity of Harry Winston and uphold the core values it was founded upon. With that in mind, over the past three years – since becoming CEO – our main objectives have been to focus on the key segments of the business that will help to further shape the brand’s future. This includes the expansion of our retail distribution network; the opening of new salons in major cities around the world – including the opening of the first salon in Germany, in Dusseldorf; the introduction of new collections that reinforce the brand’s signature aesthetic and high quality standards; an investment in exceptional gemstones; and a continuation of the brand’s high-end timepiece manufacturing practices.” Honouring the house’s steadfast commitment to procuring exceptional stones has been vital to continuing the Harry Winston legacy. With Hayek at the reins, the house purchased the Winston Legacy in 2013, a stone described then by auction house Christie’s as “the most perfect diamond ever offered for sale at auction”. This was soon followed by the purchase of a rare 13.22-carat flawless blue diamond, aptly named the Winston Blue, in 2014. Hayek says: “As the ‘King of Diamonds’, incredible stones have always been integral to the Harry Winston DNA. It was through the acquisition of rare and important diamonds that Harry Winston became a leader within

the fine jewellery industry. When we purchased the Winston Legacy and Winston Blue diamonds, it was an incredibly important moment for the brand and its future. The acquisition of important stones, such as these, not only represent our commitment to preserving Mr Winston’s legacy, but also demonstrate our promise to keep incredible diamonds at the heart of our story.” Expanding on the relationship between the house’s heritage and new design concepts, Hayek explains: “When developing new collections, we have a responsibility to preserve the House’s incredible design legacy, while also infusing new and modern touches that will resonate with our new and existing clients alike. In order to do this, we look to the Harry Winston archives and our most iconic motifs, such as the Winston Cluster, as a way to bring new life to the House’s most timeless creations. As with all of our designs, each new collection highlights the innate beauty of the diamonds themselves.” Currently it’s the house’s Sparkling Cluster collection, boasting round brilliant and pear-shaped diamonds, that has caught the attention of high-jewellery aficionados. “With Sparkling Cluster, we wanted to create a collection that celebrated the House’s long-standing commitment to making brilliant celebrations shine even brighter. True to Harry Winston’s signature aesthetic, the diamonds are at the forefront of these designs, as they seemingly float against the wearer, and sparkle with an unparalleled

brilliance. Of all the pieces within the collection, I have an affinity for the Sparkling Cluster earrings. The motif graduates up the ear, which adds a modern touch to a classic style and allows the diamonds to delicately frame and accentuate a woman’s face,” says Hayek. Whether you’re being bestowed a bejewelled creation or purchasing one yourself, for many the art of collecting jewellery is a uniquely intimate experience, as Hayek explains: “For me, fine jewellery is the ultimate luxury. More than just a rare gem, each piece of jewellery has its own unique story to tell, and symbolises a significant moment in one’s life. When looking for personal pieces, I look for those that appeal to my own sense of style. “The Harry Winston woman is someone who seeks fine jewellery and timepieces that have an intrinsic value, both emotionally and practically. She is someone who appreciates the artistry, the craftsmanship and the rarity of incredible jewels, but also wants the versatility to be able to wear them in her own unique way. The Harry Winston woman is timeless.” —— Harry Winston jewellery and timepieces are available at The Dubai Mall, contact: 04 3398972

—— While it may be much smaller in size compared with the city’s usual charter offerings, a trip on one of the cool eco-donut boats at Yas Marina certainly isn’t lacking in enjoyment. These electric boats are entirely solar powered, making them an environmentally-friendly option. Designed to seat six people, the boats can easily be manned by the passengers themselves, which means you enjoy a more private experience as you glide along the water taking in sights of the shoreline and the emirate’s famed mangroves. If you have more than six guests, you can rent a few and create your own fleet.

What seems like worlds away from the bustling city of Abu Dhabi, the 3,000-acre green haven of Al Ain Oasis is home to several farms and plantations that lay claim to more than 147,000 date palms. Also known as the Garden City, visitors can wander through the area’s charming pathways, admiring the thousands of date palms that have been carefully cultivated. About an hour and a half drive from Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain is also well-known for its historical forts and museums. Built in 1937, Al Ain Palace Museum was originally the palace of the late UAE president HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Now open to the public as a museum, it has been painstakingly restored so visitors can explore its residential quarters and courtyards. Qasr Al Muwaji, the birthplace of the late UAE president, has watched over Al Ain for nearly a century and now houses an exhibition detailing the story of the Al Nahyan dynasty. Al Ain National Museum then gives visitors the chance to further explore Bedouin life, through a captivating collection of traditional musical instruments, jewellery and weapons. Certainly an attraction for the whole family, Al Ain Zoo is a must. At the foot of Jebel Hafeet mountain, the zoo offers an impressive variety of experiences for little visitors, including elephant and giraffe feeding, educational tours, conservation programmes and the popular Al Ain Safari drive. The emirate’s second largest city is also home to the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club. Tee off on the pristine 18-hole championship golf course, which presents a challenging experience for golfers during the day, while the back nine holes of the lush green course are fully floodlit to allow for after-dark play.

The emir ate boasts a varied topogr aphy with a stunning coast and sea, natur al isl ands, glorious sand dunes and abundant m angrove forests

Neighbouring emirate, and capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi presents an equally exciting destination that begs exploration. Despite growing from a sleepy coastal village to a booming metropolis, the city is still firmly focused on its cultural offerings. As new developments continue to spring up across the capital, transforming it into a global hub for arts, business and leisure, to truly appreciate the remarkable progress of a city, visitors need to fully understand its history. At Heritage Village by the Corniche Breakwater, visitors are given the chance to explore this not-so-distant past and marvel at the extent to which Abu Dhabi has changed since oil revenues transformed the emirate’s fortunes around the 1970s. Here, the life of the Bedu people is proudly showcased while pastimes such as glass-blowing, weaving and pottery are demonstrated by local artisans. Just across the water, Abu Dhabi Corniche stretches along the coast with its backdrop of gleaming towers that gesture towards a city living very much in the future. Of course, no visit to Abu Dhabi would be complete without a trip to the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Situated between three main bridges – Maqta, Mussafah and Sheikh Zayed – it adds an enchanting touch to the capital’s skyline. An astounding 82 domes form the roofs and ceilings of the structure, each clad with marble on the outside and decorated with works of art and verses from the Holy Qur’an on the inside. Slightly further afield, there are many architectural sights and ancient forts to explore, including Qasr Al Muwaji. This historic building has watched over

Book 1.indb 44

the emirate’s heritage heartland of Al Ain for nearly a century. It now houses an exhibition in a modern glass-walled space that tells the story of UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Al Nahyan dynasty. The emirate boasts a varied topography with a stunning coast and sea, natural islands, glorious sand dunes and abundant mangrove forests. The mangroves, commonly seen around the capital’s islands and sheltered coastal areas, go on for miles and miles and provide essential shelter to local marine life. Fishing was one of the oldest means of survival for Abu Dhabi inhabitants who have relied on the ocean’s bounty for centuries. The practice lives on here today – visitors can take a trip to the dhow port by Mina Zayed early in the morning and watch as these traditional boats prepare to head out to sea. The Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey on-board an authentic jalboot vessel is another great way to experience the city’s treasured past. For those eager to explore the emirate’s more modern additions and luxury leisure options, head to Yas Island. Here motorsports enthusiasts can enjoy the revelry of this month’s Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit with festivities continuing right along Yas Marina. Alternatively, tee off on one of the region’s most outstanding golf courses, the picturesque 18-hole links-style club at Yas Links Abu Dhabi. This prestigious district is also home to a bevy of family-fun activities including Yas Waterworld and the famed indoor theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi.

Pipe dreams ——— Concierge explores the Middle Eastern culture of shisha smoking and discovers the expertise required to prepare the perfect set-up

Shisha has been an integral part of Middle Eastern culture for centuries and is a popular ritual for those looking to relax, socialise or simply pass the time of day. Although there’s no dispute that it came from this part of the world, the exact origins of shisha remain under debate with Turkey, Egypt, Syria and Iran all laying claim to the initiation of this historic practice. Its widespread use in this region has given rise to many different names and, depending on the destination, it may variously be referred to as shisha, hookah and narghile, among others. All, however, refer to the same Arabian practice of inhaling flavoured tobacco through a waterpipe. Today, shisha smoking remains a hugely popular recreational activity in the UAE and those looking to try it out will find an abundance of shisha lounges and cafés across Abu Dhabi. Hundreds of flavours are available, although beginners should generally stick to lighter flavours at first, choosing mild fruity flavours such as strawberry, melon or cherry. Those seeking something more intense can opt for stronger tastes such as apple, grape or mint. In order to get the most out of the experience, it is advised that each pipe be used consistently for a specific flavour, as swapping between them can have a negative effect and contaminate flavours. In addition, coals should be changed every 10 minutes while water should be refreshed between each use and ice added to keep the smoke smooth.

Whether a beginner or a seasoned smoker, shisha is a practised art and following these steps can enhance the experience in one of an abundance of the city’s shisha lounges. Why not combine partaking in this treasured pastime with a visit to some of the city’s more contemporary settings. Skylite Lounge at the iconic Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi is a great spot to enjoy some shisha while also appreciating the venue’s distinctive LED grid-like rooftop and the hotel’s spectacular location, overlooking the famed Yas Marina Circuit. Head outdoors and enjoy your shisha al fresco at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villa’s Beach House Rooftop, relishing the sunset views of the capital’s gorgeous coastline from this popular Saddiyat Island haunt. If you’re looking for a more lively vibe, Realx@12 is just the spot. Located within Aloft Hotel, the 12th floor bar and lounge grants fantastic city views along with a great food and shisha menu. Then, for a more traditional take, celebrated Middle Eastern venue Reem Al Bawadi is an ideal choice if you’re eager to start off your evening by feasting on a selection of Arabic dishes and regional classics before indulging in the wide assortment of shisha on offer. Alternatively, those embarking on a desert safari or tour to one of emirate’s Bedoiun camps, will get the chance to experience the ritual along with several other time-honoured pastimes, such belly dancing, henna painting and camel riding.

Arabia’s perfect blend ——— For a true taste of local life savour a delicious cup of Arabic coffee

Caramel-coloured beans bubble on the stove at just the right temperature before the dark frothy liquid is poured into a highly polished jug. A distinct aroma fills the air as Arabica beans fuse with cardamom to form a special blend. As the coffee is poured into traditional finjaan cups, a sense of ceremony surrounds the occasion. More than a symbol of Emirati warmth and hospitality, Arabic coffee, also known as khaleeji, is revered as an important reminder of local traditions and time gone by. Coffee was first popularised in the Arab world where warm conditions were ripe for cultivating beans. The social aspect of gathering to enjoy the drink soon made the activity central to community life here, long before coffee drinking caught on in Europe. The first cultivation of coffee was in Yemen where it was given the Arabic name qahwa from which the words coffee and cafÊ both derive. Mystics in Yemen initially used coffee to improve concentration. By 1414 the practice of drinking coffee had spread throughout the Middle East. A warming drink to comfort in cool night-time desert temperatures, Bedouin cooked coffee in copper pots on beds of coal in the sand over an open fire. Retaining much of the same method, ground beans are to this day boiled rather than filtered or percolated and served in small cups intended to be enjoyed straight away. Arabic coffee’s distinctive taste comes from the addition of spices such as saffron and cardamom, which can give the drink a green hue. The beans, lighter in colour than American or European varieties, are lightly roasted and ground with cardamom before being boiled for around 15 to 20 minutes.

Additional blends are infused with saffron, cloves or rose water to offer alternative f lavours. Once boiled on the stove in a pot known as a kezveh, the coffee is transferred to a copper pot or jug known as a dallah which is often characterised by a long spout. An example of the dallah’s elegant shape can be seen on the one dirham coin which bears an image of the jug – a further testament to the importance of Arabic coffee within local culture. The drink is then served in small cups known as finjaan which are poured a quarter full. The coffee is then intended to be enjoyed straight away without stirring so the liquid rising to the top can be savoured first. Arabic coffee is rarely served with milk or sugar to allow the strength of flavour to come through. Instead a sweet side offering such as dates is often the accompaniment to this traditional drink.

A cornerstone of the famous Emirati hospitality, Arabic coffee is normally offered to guests visiting a home here. Etiquette requires at least one cup is taken from the host who will pour the coffee as guests are warmly welcomed. It is polite to drink from a cup held in the right hand. A circular swirl of the cup is usually considered as an indication that you have finished. Arabic coffee is also served at social gatherings, business meetings and during special occasions such as Ramadan during iftar, the meal that breaks the fast each day. A traditional dallah coffee pot makes a wonderful memento from a visit to the UAE and the city’s souks and malls have a beautiful selection to choose from. There are also plenty of opportunities for visitors to Abu Dhabi to enjoy an authentic Arabic coffee with a host of traditional cafés, souks and even shopping malls offering the chance to enjoy the delicious drink. Some of the city’s finest hotels offer a chic setting in which to relax. Although for visitors eager to sample this delicious blend in more traditional settings, we’d recommend a visit to Heritage Village. Located along the Corniche, here you’ll discover more about the role coffee plays in local customs. For an equally atmospheric setting complete with old-fashion decor and warm hospitality, Al Fanar Restaurant at Venetian Village and Al Arish, near Mina Zayed Port, are both themed venues that allow visitors to feel as if they have truly stepped back in time. Then for those visiting Dubai, be sure to pop into the Coffee Museum nestled within Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood to sample an array of exotic coffee blends.

Although its creative and manufacturing headquarters are based in Italy, Khalil Al Sayegh Jewellers fuses east and west drawing on artistic inspiration and precious materials from across the globe. Showcasing a kaleidoscope of brightly hued stones, the brand’s signature jewellery line Aliel brings designs to life with a vibrant palette of stones including fancy coloured diamonds, red Burmese rubies and magnificent emeralds. Khalil Al Sayegh Jewellers’ ethos is about providing ‘only the extraordinary’, with each design centering on three key aspects; the rareness of the stone’s hue, its richness or saturation and the purity of the stone. While the mosque is a striking monument to view from afar, we recommend having a tour of the mosque as it exceeds all expectations. To get a closer look at its many facets and gain a deeper understanding of Islam, join one of the complimentary guided tours that take place every day in the mornings and evenings. Earlier this year we had the privilege of attending Abu Dhabi Classics’ fantastic Staatskapelle Dresden concert at the historic Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain. The setting was spectacular and made us appreciate the charming fort even more. Al Jahili Fort also houses a permanent exhibition on British adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger’s famed journey across The Empty Quarter desert. Contact: 03 7843996

We’ve never had a more fascinating introduction to the world of falcons than at Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. Take a photograph while holding one of these majestic birds or watch them swoop through the sky at the free-flight aviary. Expert trainers will reveal their insider knowledge at guided tours but it’s advisable to call ahead to confirm timings. Contact: 02 6166999

AL Q ATTARA ARTS C E NTRe

This cultural gem can be found at the heart of Al Ain’s serene Al Qattara Oasis. Specialising in local and Arab art, we’ve loved the calligraphy workshops and community art events at the centre. During the cooler months, the weekend handicrafts market in the neighbouring Al Qattara Souk is also worth a visit. Contact: 03 7618080

An offbeat cultural attraction, this quaint harbour by the Mina Zayed port is a hive of activity. We recommend heading there early in the morning to see the traditional abra boats set sail or later in the evening as catches are offloaded. The scene presents a striking contrast between the past and present with the emirate’s modern skyline in the distance.

Walking into the Antiques Gallery feels like wandering into a scene from the Arabian Nights classic. A treasure trove of historic art works await in each room in this villa, along with magnificently hilted swords and centuries-old stately ornaments. You could be forgiven for rubbing an old-style lamp at the gallery in the hope of being offered three wishes by the resident genie. Contact: 02 6671229

The last souk of its kind in the UAE, visitors to Al Ain Camel Market are in for a treat as it houses hundreds of camels and presents excellent photo opportunities. The market also has several stores selling traditional items. Tour guides are available but it’s easy enough to explore on your own. Situated east of Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain, the market is open from 6am to 7pm. Entry costs AED20 per person.

HERITAGE VILLAGE Designed to resemble a traditional oasis village, this quaint attraction provides an interesting glimpse into the emirate’s past. There’s a Bedouin tent, reconstructions of original date-palm houses, an example of the ancient falaj irrigation system and a small spice shop selling dried herbs and other trinkets.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

Miniature Adventures Yas Waterworld on Yas Island appears as never seen before thanks to the tilt-shift technique applied by Concierge photographer Adham Sneeh. Creating an extreme shallow depth of field, the result is this stunning miniature-like effect. Taking on a uniquely different perspective, here the famed Yas Waterworld appears as a scale model, shrinking the capital’s leading water park and its thrilling selection of rides, slides and attractions.

Breguet, the innovator. Creation of a peerless style, 1775

With a particularly refined and timeless design, Breguet renewed the traditional horological aesthetic of the late 18 th century. Today, the Classique 7787 model, indicating the age and phases of the moon, is a contemporary interpretation of the Breguet style : white grand feu enamel dial, Breguet numerals, Breguet moon-tip hands and secret signature. History is still being written ...
