It is a place where deep-rooted Arabian heritage is deftly woven into a rich destination tapestry complete with luxury accommodation and world-class leisure attractions. I hope during your stay you are able to experience as much of this variety as possible. In many ways, this emirate is several destinations in one, from the rustic charm of Al Ain, the birthplace of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the breathtaking vastness of the Liwa Desert in Al Gharbia with its mountainous dunes, to the energising pace and brightness of our capital city. We all share a desire to make you feel as welcome as possible and hope you leave with a positive, lasting impression of our homeland, traditions and people. In the pages of this magazine, you will find an overview of the emirate’s widespread appeal and I’m sure you will find much to inspire and entertain you. PAST TO PRESENT ——— CEO Wilhelm Schmid offers a glimpse into A. Lange & Söhne’s timeless heritage and new horological inspirations

On the southern edge of one of watchmaking’s most famous towns sits a gleaming centre dedicated to horology. Here in Glashütte, amid the clusters of historic buildings, stands the impressive new manufactory from A. Lange & Söhne. The sophisticated space is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of watchmakers, as they follow in the footsteps of the industry greats who first honed their craft in the town’s workshops centuries ago. The very first A. Lange & Söhne manufacture opened its doors in Glashütte in 1845, so it’s all the more fitting that the manufactory opened here in 2015 to mark the 200th birthday of its founder. “The anniversary reminds us that there is no future without a past. Ferdinand Adolph Lange established the tradition of A. Lange & Söhne as a performance and innovation driven brand. With every launch of a technical innovation or a horological complication, the challenges and expectations are growing. This is what motivates and inspires us,” says Wilhelm Schmid, A. Lange & Söhne CEO. After opening the first Glashütte workshop in 1845, Dresden watchmaker, Ferdinand Adolph Lange ensured the future of the company he founded by passing on the mantle to future generations. Under his sons Richard and Emil, the firm went on to great heights. Their precision pocket watch from Saxony was exported across the world, much sought after for its high complications. However, the

aftermath of World War II saw the company nationalised and, as a result, lost until 1990 when Ferdinand’s great-grandson Walter Lange relaunched the brand. From this momentous re-emergence, the company has gone on to become one of the world’s most exclusive houses of horology, producing just a few thousand handmade pieces in gold and platinum each year. Specialists in high-end complications, they include perpetual calendars, world-timers, tourbillons and minute repeaters. Among the successes to date is the Lange 1, with its distinctive outsize date and the Lange Zeitwerk, which boasts jumping numerals in a spectacular mechanical display to provide an alternative way to show hours and minutes with rotating hands. Schmid says: “Of course, the Lange 1 is an all-time classic. The brand icon and the other models of this watch family are a major driving force behind the success of our company. The Datograph and all further developments based on its technical achievements have proven once and for all our competency in the field of premium quality chronographs. While, the Zeitwerk, with its jumping-numerals display and constant-force escapement has all the qualities of a landmark.” At Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), which took place earlier this year, A. Lange & Söhne presented its latest masterpieces including the Lange 1 Moon Phase that features a

brilliant new movement that combines the moon-phase display with a day/night indicator. The timepiece tracks the lunar cycle – with an average duration of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds – so accurately that it takes 122.6 years for the display to deviate from the true synodic period by just one day. Along with the new Zeitwerk Decimal Strike, Lange 31, Little Lange 1 Moon Phase, 1815 Annual Calendar and refined Saxonia timepieces that come in white and pink gold, the Tourbograph Perpetual is another highlight for 2017. The fifth creation from the landmark ‘Pour le Mérite’ series and limited to just 50 pieces, it is one of the most complicated watches ever produced by the German watchmaker. It combines the fusée-and-chain transmission with a tourbillon, chronograph, rattrapante function and perpetual calendar – a brilliant, innovative creation that exemplifies the craftsmanship behind every A. Lange & Söhne timepiece. Describing the painstaking steps that go into each remarkable watch, Schmid says: “Every A. Lange & Söhne watch has its origins in an idea. The objective is to create timepieces that have never been made this way before. Right from the beginning, the movement designers work hand in hand with the product designers. “Ultimately, the theoretical world of design interfaces with the real world. This is where the prototype makers take over. Their full-scale working models undergo a series of severe stress tests in the in-house testing laboratory before the new model is ready for series production.

12

“After that, the next steps are the production and decoration of parts with the entire range of finishing techniques that are typical of the brand. This includes the hand-engraving of the balance cock. The double assembly is another Lange speciality to ensure superior quality. Some of our complications are so complex, that only a handful of specialised watchmakers are able to build them.” A main focus of the Glashütte facility is to nurture the modern watchmaker. Schmid says: “The profession of watchmaking gives great opportunities to achieve personal fulfillment. Since 1997, the Lange Watchmaking School provides training that meets the high standards demanded by the manufactory. On average, we accept 15 to 20 apprentices per year. After the three-year apprenticeship, most graduates will work at the Lange manufactory where they will be offered good career opportunities.” After all, in the words of the late founder Walter Lange, “there’s something one should expect not only of a watch but also of oneself: to never stand still”. —— Discover the latest A. Reaching beyond the power of words ——— Montblanc’s collection for current and future generations

A true testament to Montblanc’s stature as a luxury maison of note, the manufacturer of premium writing instruments, watches, jewellery and leather goods hosted a gala dinner in New York that combined a starstudded attendance with a great and noble cause. Celebrities including Hugh Jackman, Diane Kruger, Olivia Palermo, Natalie Vertiz, Rami Malek and Elsa Hosk came together for the Montblanc & UNICEF Gala Dinner on April 3 to celebrate the partnership between the United Nations Children’s Fund and the prestigious brand. Montblanc has been a consistent and generous supporter of UNICEF, raising more than US$10 million during its 13-year collaboration so far. The ‘Big Apple’ and the stunning Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the main branch of the NewYork Public Library, was selected as the venue for the announcement of the renewal of their long-standing partnership as the city is the headquarters of UNICEF and the library is a landmark where thousands come to read every day – a privilege that may not be enjoyed by up to 75 million children that have their education interrupted or disrupted by global events. Montblanc’s new CEO, Nicolas Baretzki, made his first public speech at the helm of the brand at the event. He took over the top spot on April 1 from Jérôme Lambert who has assumed a corporate position within Richemont. Baretzki commented in his address that the UNICEF partnership reflects the core of the brand, striking a chord to “the meaning of writing instruments, the meaning of Montblanc and the power of words”. The link between education and the Montblanc collection is subtle but clear. Baretzki explained that education could be looked at very simply – about learning to read and write, and learning the alphabets; and this is reflected in the Montblanc collections, which focus on six alphabets and the first letters of each. For each Montblanc piece that is sold from now until the end of March 2018, a generous contribution will be made to UNICEF of at least US$1.5 million arising from three percent of sales against the new collections.

Brand ambassadors, friends of the brand and UNICEF supporters were out in force and Concierge was delighted to be sitting with Rami Malek – star of the American television series Mr. Robot – during the dinner itself. He declared himself as one of UNICEF’s biggest fans and has consistently rallied support for the organisation in New York, where he is based. All participants at the event were invited to make their mark on an interactive blackboard where they could share a message. Putting chalk to a blackboard and having this immortalised digitally was an intriguing approach to messaging. Jo Bourne, UNICEF’s chief of education, programme division commented on the lasting partnership, saying that: “Education is a right and vital investment. Every one of us has an education story to tell. Our education stories shape who we become and the education choices we make for our children. It is an investment in a child’s future and contributes to healthier and more peaceful societies.” We learned from her speech that 1.5 billion adults by 2030 will receive little or no education and UNICEF operates across 155 countries to reach the most marginalised and work against this seemingly impossible tide. The organisation supported 15.4 million children and 330 classrooms with education materials in 2016 and explained that with partners like Montblanc they can invest early and identify the children that can benefit the most. Montblanc’s face of the brand is Hugh Jackman, who was a teacher before he was an actor, and he put the partnership into context in a short but captivating address where he said that it was a “win-win” arrangement, commenting that education isn’t a privilege, it is a right, and referenced his pride at being an ambassador for a company that supports the issues that really matter, making a difference in our world. —— Discover more about the latest Montblanc collections at the brand’s boutique at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island. This special time of year is a unique opportunit y for visitors to learn more about local culture and customs, while joining in some cherished tr aditions

For many, Ramadan is primarily characterised by fasting – the practise of abstaining from all food and drink between the hours of sunrise and sunset. While this is certainly an important part of the Ramadan experience, it is just one of the many elements that come together during the holy month as muslims turn their gaze inwards and reflect on their faith. This special time of year is also a unique opportunity for visitors to learn more about local culture and customs, while joining in some cherished traditions. Known as the holy month, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and always starts two weeks earlier than the previous year. The exact date of the beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon, or ‘hilal’. When this slight crescent has appeared in the sky the start of the holy month is announced. The following morning at the first light of dawn fasting will commence. This year Ramadan is due to fall between May 26 and June 24, or as soon as the official Moon Sighting Committee spots the hilal. At the end of the month, when the hilal is once again observed, the three-day Eid

al-Fitr celebration to break the fast begins. It’s also a special time when families and friends come together to enjoy the spirit of the season. Nasif Kayed, general manager of the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), explains the different elements of practising Islam, especially during the holy month. “Part of the faith involves fasting during Ramadan. The idea is to teach discipline, perseverance and patience. It also makes you watch yourself very closely. During daylight hours between sunrise and sunset muslims must abstain from all food, drink, smoking, gossiping and cursing. While outsiders might think this a daunting prospect, many followers look forward to the holy month each year. The whole community does it together. It would be more difficult if you were the only one,” Kayed explains. “Of course there are some muslims who don’t anticipate the arrival of Ramadan as eagerly, but those who dive into it are rewarded by enhanced spirituality. Many of us really look forward to it because it makes us feel great to practise being good.”

The early part of the holy month is often the most challenging as fasting begins. “The first three days are very difficult for almost everyone. As the month goes on it gets better and better and by the time you’re used to it, it ends. You feel so purified that you could continue to live like it past the end of the month,” Kayed explains. When the sun sets, the fast ends for the day and followers can prepare for the iftar meal. It marks an opportunity to come together over a delicious feast each night during Ramadan. As well as gatherings at home, hotels across the region serve luxurious iftar buffets incorporating authentic Middle Eastern cuisine like dates, mezze, pickles, olives, roasted meats, tagines and juices. Later in the evening, a second round of food is served in a meal called ‘sohour’. This is also the name for the last meal before sunrise and some eat it as an early breakfast before the first prayer. All through the year muslims pray five times a day, but the prayers just before sunrise and just after sunset during the holy month take on extra significance as daylight fasting begins or ends. Performing ritual prayers five times a day is another pillar of Islam and is called ‘salat’. Many will also read the Qur’an more frequently and intently during this time. Ahead of prayer time, worshippers perform ‘wudu’ or ablution to cleanse faces, hands and feet before presenting themselves to God.

“Ablution is the physical and mental preparation before you step into the conversation with your lord,” explains Kayed. “The prayer is identical every time. All over the world muslims say the same words reflecting the same principle: to be good and recognise blessings.” Another major part of the holy month is ‘zakat’, one of the five pillars of Islam that requires muslims give to the poor and needy during Ramadan. Feeling hunger from fasting is also a fitting reminder of the suffering of others and the obligation to be charitable towards those in need at this spiritual time of year. “In Ramadan charity counts in every way. You can feed, clothe, or give money. You give from what God has given you,” says Kayed. Visitors are invited to join in the spirit of generosity by donating or giving larger tips to waiters or taxi drivers. A useful phrase to use at this time is ‘Ramadan kareem’ or ‘happy Ramadan’. Once Ramadan and fasting ends, a joyous three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr takes place. Kayed says: “After breakfast and prayers everyone dresses in new clothes and meets each other, starting with the oldest in the family, and then visiting extended family. “All three days are about spending time with family and having fun together,” adds Kayed. “It’s also common, though not obligatory, for families to give gifts especially to children during this special time, marking the end of Ramadan for another year.”

Aside from the sumptuous iftars held at five-star hotels in the UAE, iftar is also offered at Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding in Dubai and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the capital

Fresh flavours ——— Peruvian chef Luis Manuel brings his South American flair to the capital

A gilded beacon among the capital’s ever-expanding skyline, the luxurious Bab Al Qasr Abu Dhabi offers plenty for residents and visitors to indulge in. From its first-class facilities complemented by the hotel’s own private beach along the bustling Corniche to its enticing range of culinary offerings. In addition to international delights at Artisan Kitchen and poolside classics served at Loop, the latest venue to cause a stir on Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene is new Peruvian haunt, Limo. As the capital’s first Peruvian restaurant, Limo has a lot to live up and on hand to ensure the restaurant’s South American authenticity is Peruvian chef Luis Manuel. New to the hotel and the region, Manuel reveals: “I’ve only been here a few months now and so far I’ve found the experience both interesting and challenging. Previously I have been used to cooking for South American customers and now I’m having to “teach” the flavours of my home country to the local and the expatriate communities here in Abu Dhabi. However I am very happy to have the opportunity to showcase my culture, my knowledge as well as capabilities as a chef.” As Manuel explains, his main source of inspiration, understandably, is his home country and that in addition to paying homage to Peru, sourcing authentic ingredients and providing a true Peruvian experience is his key focus. “Before joining Bab Al Qasr Hotel in Abu Dhabi I also had the opportunity to travel a lot in South America and master the traditional dishes from my hometown. Here in the capital I try to stay up to date on new Peruvian products coming to this country. We work with speciality suppliers who travel each week from South America to UAE, guaranteeing freshness and authentic produce. “Peru is also very famous for its seafood products and to be honest I really enjoy preparing these types of dishes. In Abu Dhabi the seafood and fish we use is all caught by local fishermen and delivered to us fresh each day.

“I also take a lot of inspiration from trying different foods and thinking of ways to combine original flavours with new ones I’ve discovered. I enjoy trying out the latest culinary techniques and ‘playing’ with my cooking. It’s like an art to me and so in many of my dishes you’ll find a mix of different colours, textures and aesthetics.” Hearing chef Manuel talk about his background, it’s clear he has a lot of passion for his country and cooking. “Back home I grew up with great food that championed great flavours. We are used to eating a wide variety of dishes made from fresh produce. Growing up with this culture made me very curious and I wanted to learn more about how fresh products can be used to craft such flavourful dishes. I also used to watch my mother and my grandmother cooking and preparing food for family attending parties and reunions with such love for what they were creating. All this inspired me to start cooking, and with time and practice I have worked towards becoming a chef de cuisine.” Chatting about the gastronomic options at the hotel, Manuel reveals: “There are several fantastic food and beverage outlets in Bab Al Qasr, although Limo is my main priority. At Limo diners will have the opportunity to taste the real flavours of my homeland yet with a more refined finish thanks to my techniques and way of cooking. Needless to say my first and absolute favourite dish is Limo’s ceviche, followed closely by our delicious anticucho octopus and the nikei shrimp. Elsewhere in the hotel, I love the mezza at Artisan Kitchen, the hummous is also amazing, and I’d recommend visitors try the restaurant’s popular nasi goreng, the flavours are fantastic.”

During the cooler months, the weekend handicrafts market in the neighbouring Al Qattara Souk is also worth a visit. Contact: 03 7618080

An offbeat cultural attraction, this quaint harbour by the Mina Zayed port is a hive of activity. We recommend heading there early in the morning to see the traditional abra boats set sail or later in the evening as catches are offloaded. The scene presents a striking contrast between the past and present with the emirate’s modern skyline in the distance. E t i h a d a NTI Q UES G a l l e r y

Walking into the Antiques Gallery feels like wandering into a scene from the Arabian Nights classic. A treasure trove of historic art works await in each room in this villa, along with magnificently hilted swords and centuries-old stately ornaments. You could be forgiven for rubbing an old-style lamp at the gallery in the hope of being offered three wishes by the resident genie. Contact: 02 6671229

Sweet temptations From decadent to indulgently sweet, savour Abu Dhabi’s best desserts

—— Benjarong

A popular capital hotel, the menu at Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi easily tempts fans of Southeast Asian cuisine with an edit of classic dishes and after a medley of exotic Thai flavours there’s no better way to round off your meal than with a serving of mango sticky rice. Undoubtedly one of Thailand’s most popular desserts, the dish is artfully presented as a generous mound of sweet sticky rice sits alongside refreshing slices of mango and a pot of creamy coconut milk. With it’s smattering of bright fixtures, funky lighting and quirky wall décor, Circo, which means circus in Italian, brings its carnival vibe to the capital. As you’d expect from a restaurant that exhibits such eclecticism across the board, the dessert offerings are equally as vibrant. The bright Tuscan raspberry semifreddo cake offers a burst of flavours with each mouthful as it combines a sweet, gooey heart of honey gelato with Italian meringue and fragrant vanilla sauce. Another great dish comes is Circo’s famed tiramisu sphere. With its scrumptious mix of quality coffee, creamy mascarpone cheese and a crunchy biscuit base encased in a dark chocolate shell. Contact: 02 6666888

Much like the cool, urban decor at Market Kitchen, the menu is packed with tempting treats as it runs the full gauntlet of flavours, from fresh fettuccine pasta to grilled New York strip steak. However, for those with a sweet tooth, you’ll be excused for struggling to avert your eyes from the tempting treats on offer. The salted caramel ice cream sundae, which has been referred to as “pure indulgence”, has big dollops of smooth ice cream on a bed of chocolate fudge sauce generously sprinkled with peanuts and salted caramel popcorn. Another favourite though is the caramelised banana cake. The dessert is perfectly paired with a scoop of rich hazelnut ice cream and crunchy praline. Contact: 02 6950300

—— Go for Greek

The popularity of Greek eateries certainly seems to be on the rise in the region, with many foodies lapping up the vivacious flavours flooding in from the Greek Isles. One of the first Greek restaurants in the capital, Acropolis is as loved for its warm and inviting atmosphere as it is for its tasty, authentic Mediterranean fare. Nestled within Le Méridien Abu Dhabi’s quaint Méridien Village, it’s reminiscent of a traditional Greek taverna, complete with blue gingham check tablecloths and a lovely al fresco terrace. Much like the setting, the menu, according to executive chef, Patrick Van Velzen, has been designed to “reflect the friendliness and generosity of the Greeks”. Discover wholesome dishes such as rich mousaka and hearty stifado beef stew. Meat-lovers can take their pick from chunky grilled cuts, all of which go perfectly with the restaurant’s homemade tzatziki and traditional choriatiki Greek salad. Contact: 02 6440348

When you think of Spanish cuisine it’s hard not to think of tapas. Small yet hearty, these dishes are a great way to enjoy tasty Spanish classics such as spicy chorizo and manchego cheese, slow cooked beef in red wine, crispy patatas bravas and the muchloved egg and potato omelette – tortilla de patata tradicional. Fortunately for fans of this wonderfully social cuisine, Bravo at Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort delivers on all culinary counts. The eclectic menu also boasts four different types of paella, including paella negra de calamar’s seafood celebration of Spanish rice brimming with calamari, shrimps and mussels. Bravo’s famed rich, custardy crema Catalana is then the perfect way to bring your Spanish feast to an end. The venue itself also hosts regular tapas and sangria promotions and live Flamenco music making it the ideal hangout to catch up with friends and family. Contact: 02 6725149

With an emphasis on robust, fresh ingredients, flavours that sing with undeniable vibrancy and a culinary philosophy that heartily promotes lively family get-togethers, it’s easy to see why Italian cuisine has endeared itself into the hearts of food aficionados from all walks of life. Savour all the charm and authenticity you’ve come to love about this scrumptious cuisine with a visit to Bocca at Hilton Abu Dhabi. To start, the antipasti selection is seriously tempting. Tuck into plump buffalo burrata, truffle tapenade carpaccio and the ever-popular vitello tonnato – thinly sliced veal with tuna tartar. For mains, you can’t fault the tantalising seafood linguine with a hint of chilli or the succulent veal escallops with Parma ham, sage and Romanesco broccoli. Finally round off your meal with a silky pannacotta that’s made with camel milk for a unique regional twist. Contact: 02 6924160

HERITAGE VILLAGE Designed to resemble a traditional oasis village, this quaint attraction provides an interesting glimpse into the emirate’s past. There’s a Bedouin tent, reconstructions of original date-palm houses, an example of the ancient falaj irrigation system and a small spice shop selling dried herbs and other trinkets.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

ASK THE CONCIERGE

Daryl Bismanos, lead concierge at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, reveals his top visitor recommendations

1

Translated as ‘Father of the Gazelle’, Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the largest of its seven emirates. Covering at least 80 percent of the UAE’s landmass, and home to more than 200 islands, Abu Dhabi has a rich cultural heritage and there’s much for visitors to enjoy and explore. Discover more about the city’s captivating landscape as you soar through the sky on a seaplane tour. Book with Seawings and enjoy their 25-minute snapshot tour of the capital’s most iconic landmarks and its picturesque coastline. Or, for a different perspective, why not take a scenic boat trip with Yellow Boats and cruise across the Corniche. The lively area along the Corniche Breakwater is also perfect for taking a an afternoon stroll and enjoying the many café’s and waterside attractions. Another spot high on list is the majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. One of the world’s largest mosques, a visit here is an essential cultural experience. Guests can also join the mosque’s daily guided tours to gain a deeper understanding of the region and its religion.

No trip to Abu Dhabi would be complete without venturing into the desert on a safari. Hop in a 4x4 for a thrilling ride across the desert’s vast terrain dominated by endless sand dunes. Then settle in for a magical evening feast under the stars with delectable food and entertainment including belly dancers, camel riding, henna tattoo and shisha smoking. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is yet another exciting experience. Head to the world’s first Ferrari-themed indoor park and grab a seat on the acclaimed Formula Rossa as it reaches speeds of 240 kilometres per hour in just five seconds. There’s also Flying Aces and the theme park’s thrilling new Turbo Track to try. One of Abu Dhabi’s best kept secrets is Zaya Nurai, a Maldivian-inspired boutique resort on Zaya Nurai Island. Escape to this haven of tranquillity and discover gourmet restaurants and luxury beachfront villas. For culinary delights in the capital visit the terrace at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr’s Chameleon Bar. This laid-back venue offers great al fresco views and a vibrant selection of cocktails and light bites. The hotel’s newly opened Puesta del Sol, which takes its name from the Spanish word meaning sunset, is an atmospheric bar with live music and a delicious tapas-style menu. For couples looking for an intimate dining experience, I highly recommend Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill. Cosy and sophisticated, savour exceptional high-end fare here. Alternatively, you can never go wrong with a visit to Sontaya, at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. This refined restaurant serves elegant Southeast-Asian dishes by the venue’s idyllic pool-side setting. 3
