Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
S a j e e v K u m a r , a ss i s ta n t c h i e f c o n c i e r g e at A l Raha Beach Hotel, gives his top tips for visitors
Learn about Islam and the role it plays in UAE society by taking a free guided tour of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The iconic mosque was opened to the public in 2007 and is one of the few in the region accessible to non-Muslims. Visitors must wear conservative clothing and women will be given an abaya and sheila to wear on arrival. Where: Al Maqtaa. When: Tours are held from Sunday to Thursday at 10am, 11am and 4.30pm, Fridays at 2pm, 4.30pm and 8pm, and Saturdays at 10am, 11am, 2pm, 4.30pm and 8pm. Price: Free. Contact: 800 555 or see szgmc.ae
Experience Ice skating
Whether you’re a budding Olympian or merely a beginner, Abu Dhabi’s numerous ice-skating rinks offer hours of ‘chilled-out’ fun. There are rinks in malls across the emirate and all offer tuition for those looking to polish their skills. One of the biggest is at Abu Dhabi Ice Rink, an Olympic-sized facility at Zayed Sports City (pictured), which can accommodate up to 400 skaters. Where: Abu Dhabi Ice Rink and Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi; Bawadi Mall, Hili Fun City and Al Ain Mall in Al Ain. When: Most operate from 10am to 10pm. Price: Varies per venue, with average cost AED25 for 1.5 hours. Contact: See Experience listings for details.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most picturesque structures in the capital. It features 80 domes, approximately 1,000 columns, 24-carat gold-plated chandeliers and the world’s largest handwoven carpet. Heritage Village, a recreation of a traditional oasis village, provides a glimpse of the country’s past, including the falaj irrigation system and workshops where craftsmen demonstrate traditional skills. Al Ain Museum, next to the Sultan or Eastern Fort, provides an overview of the UAE’s traditions and culture, alongside the much older story of the people who inhabited the area. I also recommend a visit to the world’s biggest theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and its Formula Rossa, a rollercoaster which reaches speeds of 240kmh. A desert safari is an authentic experience that showcases the grandeur of the dunes, famed Arabian hospitality and camel riding. Al Forsan International Sports Resort offers horse riding, go karting, dune buggies, paintball and wakeboarding. Abu Dhabi is an ideal place to shop for designer brands and Marina Mall and Abu Dhabi Mall are the best places to do this. Miraj Islamic Art Centre, next to Marina Mall, sells carpets, silks and handwoven pashminas, so it is a good place for souvenir shopping. For restaurants, I recommend Azur Mediterranean in Al Raha Beach Hotel. Further afield, there is Italian food at Cipriani on Yas Island, seafood at Fish Market at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi and Emirati food at Mezlai at Emirates Palace. For nightlife, visitors can head to the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri for Left Bank and Eight bars.

Different strokes From the inscriptions on the gates of the Taj Mahal in India to the writing on the panels of the Bursa Grand Mosque in Turkey, the centuries-old art of calligraphy also holds a special place in the history of Arabic art. Greatly revered in the Islamic world, calligraphy was the primary means for the preservation of the Qu’ran through the ages. Merging artistry and great learning, calligraphy is still seen as a symbol of Middle Eastern artistry. Whether purchasing ancient and traditional styles or embracing a more modern approach, this sacred script appeals to tourists in a way that surpasses language boundaries. Written from right to left, the fluidity and delicacy of Arabic script is a skill often passed down through generations. Today, artists still very much rely on traditional tools with angled reed pens, known as qalam, favoured because they allow great flexibility. While characters are typically written in black ink on starchdyed paper, there are many ways to have your chosen piece customised, including marbled parchment and script in gold or silver ink. Calligraphy can also be found on items of cothing such as shawls (see page 20) and calligraphy art is widely available from souks to galleries including Miraj Islamic Centre in the Marina area.

Worth a thousand words

From the vastness of the surrounding desserts to an ever-changing skyline, the Middle East provides an incredible canvas. Historic Arabic art that drew inspiration from faith steered away from human figures as a reference to piety. Today, thanks to the emergence of exciting new mediums, such as digital manipulation, the modern market is awash with striking pieces that provide a fresh take on historical views. Merging the two worlds of contemporary culture and tradition has influences all art forms. Fatema Al Mazrouie, one of the first Emirati artists to be headhunted by the world-famous London auction house Sotherby’s, explores her passion by taking a closer look at Muslim women around the world. Stating the importance of an artist’s message as “the most
comprehensive way to communicate with people”, she believes that there is no more formal channel of communication to convey society’s issues, ideas and concepts.” Emirati artists are making more of an impact on the international scene and the scope of contemporary art available is proving a big attraction for visitors. One of the UAE’s most influential artists and gallery owners Jalal Luqman offers some advice for buyers. “It’s important that you find out the track record of artists if you’re not familiar with their work. Ensure they have some kind of standing in the field and that the artist has a developing future. That way, even though you’re buying a piece that you visually like, it will also mean that you’re buying something that over time will increase in value,” he said.

Places of interest
Enjoying a golden age for centuries and still sought-after the world over, Persian rugs and Oriental carpets are renowned for their rich heritage and intricate designs. From the homes of royalty to the walls of great museums, these decadent styles of rugs and carpets have formed a significant part in the history of collectable art. Wandering through the halls of the Miraj Islamic Centre offers a greater appreciation of the detailed workmanship that goes into creating the rugs, especially when it becomes clear that it takes a single weaver months or even years to produce. Imtiyaz Ahmad Beigh, regional marketing manager of the centre, describes the intricacy involved. “Without actually knowing what the final image will look like, each weaver follows a pre-written code of colours and stitches, which over time evolves into the final design,” Beigh says. As the price tags can vary considerably, it’s best to find out exactly what determines a good investment. Beigh explains that key factors often include “the size and origin of

Replicas can actually be easily avoided, as all carpets of this calibre should come with a certificate of authenticity. Song and dance Stories shared by Emiratis from hundreds of years ago describing accounts of love and of wars won and lost are being kept alive through performances of traditional song and dance
Q W O R D S B Y C h a r l o t t e V a n D e n B ro u c q u e
The UAE’s traditional dances are a cultural spectacle not to be missed. Largely performed by men, although women play their own parts, the dances are dramatic re-enactments of battles, victories and religious celebrations. The ancient ayyalah is one of the most popular folk dances and signifies a victorious battle. Wearing the national dress, the kandura (white robe) and gutra (headscarf), Emirati men form two or four rows facing each other and hold wooden sticks that represent swords. Hundreds of men perform this dance together, while musicians beat drums. A single dancer then begins to chant or sing poetry while two dancers take to the middle of the lines, spinning their sticks or, in some versions of the dance, a rifle. The remaining dancers sway and dip their heads in time with the music. In the past, tribes treated the dances more as contests and would meet to exhibit their dancing and singing skills. Nowadays the dances are seen at more joyful occasions such as weddings, national days and Eid holidays. With an ancient heritage spanning hundreds of years, variations of the dances have developed across the Middle East. The harbiya dance, for instance, originated in Oman, but has been adapted over time into a unique spectacle performed across to the UAE. It too tells the story of war and, along with other regional dances such as the liwa, was used to raise fighting spirit.

These dances and other variations have been passed from generation to generation with each one conveying a different story or theme, including love, victory, hunting and fishing
These dances and their variations have been passed from generation to generation with each conveying a different story or theme, not only of battles but sometimes of love and even hunting and fishing. The poetry sung or chanted during the dance falls into one of two categories and is integral to the history of the UAE; poetry of the sand and poetry of the sea. Less than a century ago, the UAE was sparsely populated with Bedouin tribes living in harsh desert conditions. As international trade increased, settlements appeared around waterways where fabrics, dates and spices could be traded. The population lived from the sea and as pearls became valuable, so did the practice of pearl diving.
It is these activities that have contributed to the rich heritage of dance, combined with input from other Middle Eastern nationalities that travelled to the area during this time to work and trade. In other parts of the world, important traditions similar to the UAE’s folk dances are all but dying out as sports and popular culture become favoured pastimes of the young. However, national government and local authorities are keen to uphold the region’s cultural dances and actively encourage their preservation through performance. Chairman of the Ayal Nasir Society, Masood Rashed Al Suwaidi, is determined to reverse the more recent downward trend that has seen fewer young men taking part in cultural dance.
FA S T FA C T As a musical dedication to Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the world’s largest dance was performed in February 2008. A total of 221 men completed five minutes of rifle spinning and rhythmic stepping.
“Traditional dancing is an important part of our heritage and we, with the support of the UAE government, believe it is essential to pass this on for generations to come,” he says. Al Suwaidi is a member of three organisations, the earliest of which dates back to the pearl diving era of 1877. The Ayal Nasir Society aims to popularise not only traditional dancing, but other cultural activities such as Arabic art, music and sailing. For more information on where to see traditional dances, contact Dubai’s Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (cultures.ae) or the Abu Dhabi Authority for Tourism & Culture (adach.ae).

AT FULL THROTTLE With a love of all things fast and furious, Abu Dhabi is a haven for those who like to test their own limits
Q Home to the world’s fastest rollercoaster and one of the most exciting Formula One circuits, Abu Dhabi is a city where speed, adventure and excitement are celebrated. In one day, adrenaline junkies could hit 320kmh as a passenger in a modified F1 car on the main straight at Yas Marina Circuit before heading next door to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi for a frontseat ride on Formula Rossa, a rollercoaster which hits 240kmh thanks to the same technology and equipment used to launch fighter jets from aircraft carriers. If being in the driver’s seat is the preferred option, head to Yas Marina Circuit’s Drag Racing Academy and face off against a friend in a 400hp Chevrolet Camaro putting the pedal to the metal over the quarter-mile. Those who prefer to work on their aim will find the city’s shooting ranges up to standard and there are paintball facilities for those who’d rather a moving target. As the home to the UAE’s national carrier, Etihad Airways, it’s perhaps no surprise that visitors can also try their hands at flying a Boeing 747-400 simulator (pictured), which offers all the excitement and none of the risk. Shooting The UAE’s only Olympic medal was won in double trap shooting by Sheikh Ahmad bin Mohammad bin Hasher Al Maktoum in Greece in 2004, so it’s no surprise that shooting is a popular pastime here. In Abu Dhabi, visitors can make like an Olympic champion and fire a few rounds at Caracal Shooting Club where the arsenal includes semi-automatic pistols, bolt-action rifles, semi-automatic rifles and sport pistols. Most of the action happens at the 25-metre target shooting range and there is a 10-metre open range for training. A gallery overlooks the 25-metre range so those who would rather not participate can still watch. Beginners are given a safety briefing, while for those looking to improve their skills there are training courses for shooters of all levels. Once on the range, officers accompany all shooters throughout the session to ensure the safe use of the firearm. Under UAE law, the minimum age for shooting is 12 and identification such as a passport must be shown. A LUSTROUS HISTORY With a history that spans over 75 years, Paspaley has become the world’s leading South Sea pearl company devoted to the delicate art of culturing the finest quality and most beautiful pearls
Q W o r d s b y C h a r l o t t e Va n D e n B r o u c q u e
Known as the ‘first gem’, pearls are beautiful from the moment they are plucked from the heart of the oyster. Unlike gemstones, pearls require no polishing or cutting before being set into stunning pieces of jewellery. Indeed, the iridescent lustre of pearls has enchanted people since ancient times. One modern-day admirer is the late Nicholas Paspaley, a refugee who travelled from Greece to the northern coast of Australia in the 1930s. As he quickly discovered, his new home harboured rich pearl beds and the young entrepreneur set about finding these hidden treasures. He bought his first traditional pearling lugger aged 19 and started his own business, navigating his way through the perils of hardhat diving amid cyclones and shark-infested waters. Despite the challenges, Nicholas did find the pearl of his dreams and brought it safely home. His prize catch laid the foundations for his eponymous company, which grew to become a worldwide sensation and continues to be run by the family today. With its incredible pearling heritage, the story of Paspaley has particular resonance in the UAE, where the pearling industry can be traced back hundreds of years.

Cultivating a legacy Here in the UAE at the turn of the 20 th century, 1,200 boats were recorded pearling along what was known then as the Trucial coast. These boats were crewed by around 12,000 men, a large number of them pearl divers. Around the same time, Broome in Western Australia had become a global hub for mother of pearl (extracted from inside the oyster shell), supplying 70 percent of global demand to be used mostly as buttons. However, the golden age of pearling was not to last. The invention of the cultured pearl, pioneered in Japan in the early 20th century, provided an easier, more effecient way of acquiring pearls. After World War II, the Australian pearling industry all but disappeared as more affordable materials were developed for jewellery. It was during this precarious time in the pearling industry’s history that Nicholas Paspaley discovered a renewed

passion for the pearl. Inspired by the techniques developed by the Japanese in culturing pearls, he dreamt of utilising the same technology to grow exquisite South Sea pearls of unrivalled size and magnificence off the coast of Australia. Partnering with Mother Nature herself proved to be fraught with difficulties and the quest for the holy grail of the pearling world was long and arduous. Nicholas Paspaley’s passion and persistence was finally compensated with fruitful harvests of luminous pearls, bringing his vision to life and the company continued to grow.
From strength to strength 5
With a childhood filled with memories of mesmerising pearling legends, Nicholas’ son was inspired by his father’s
enthusiasm and passion for the pursuit of the pearl. Nick Paspaley says: “As a child, I never had a holiday. After school and every vacation I would go and work with my father.” Nick joined the company in 1969, learning the ropes on a traditional pearling lugger. Along with the help of Nick’s two sisters, the family expanded the business to include 20 pearl farms across 2,500 kilometres of isolated, pristine northwest Australian coastline. The tropical waters provide the perfect conditions for the oysters to flourish. The original Paspaley boutique opened its doors more than 20 years ago and is now the premier destination for those wanting to invest in the finest examples of South Sea pearls in the world.

Now the executive chairman of the company, Nick Paspaley reminisces about the origins of the family firm. “When I travel the world and see Paspaley pearls on display in the world’s leading jewellery houses, it always takes me back to the source... back to my father’s grand vision and a journey that involves so many years, so many miles and so many memories. Now we have our own 6 & 7 Bangle and drop earrings with diamonds and onyx from the Muse collection 8 Muse collection necklace, earrings and ring with blue sapphires and pavé-set diamonds 9 Muse rings with onyx, rose quartz and moonstone 10 Additional bracelet and rings from the Muse collection
boutiques around the world in which to house these magnificent gems that we have produced in harmony with nature.” I n 20 05, Paspa ley brought its uniquely beautiful pearls to the UAE with the opening of the first boutique in the region. There are now three stores in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi. Nick Paspaley remarked on the synergies between the UAE and his company, commenting that “Paspaley grows the world’s finest and most valuable pearls, so it is natural for us to want to showcase our collections in a location renowned as a destination for luxury brands and to a market that will truly appreciate and value the most beautiful pearls in the world.”

Pearls of wisdom It can take years to accumulate pearls of the matching colour and size to create a perfect string of pearls. They are meticulously scrutinised and rigorously graded in the same way as other gemstones but considering the ‘five virtues’ of size, colour, shape, lustre and complexion. The Paspaley Strand Signature is a glittering Paspaley-branded diamond set flush into one of the strand’s pearls. It is a guarantee of authenticity as well as the highest quality that money can buy as only the most lustrous and perfect pearls are used in the creation of Paspaley’s exquisite pieces of jewellery. Each year the rarest and most magnificent pearls are set aside to create only a few ‘super strands’ of pearls, which boast the coveted Paspaley Strand Signature pink diamond. Strictly for those with serious spending power, these are at the pinnacle of the jewellery world. “Our customers are discerning and seek out the finest quality products with authentic provenance,” says Nick Paspaley. “With a 75-year heritage dedicated to the creation of naturally beautiful pearls, we are excited to pioneer this new strand feature for our customers’ reassurance of true quality and natural beauty.”

From the land of the rising sun Say konnichiwa to delicious Japanese cuisine in some of the city’s finest Southeast Asian restaurants
Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson
Sushi may be the most famous of Japanese dishes, but there is more to this fascinating cuisine than raw fish rolled in rice and seaweed. It is one of the healthiest cuisines in the world, using staples such as rice, fish, seaweed, soy bean products and vegetables. It combines a complex mixture of ingredients to create a delicate flavour and balance, while maintaining painstaking attention to detail in presentation. Well-known dishes include tempura (lightly battered vegetables and prawns), yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and teriyaki (meat and fish grilled in a sweet soy sauce marinade). Those looking to experience authentic Japanese cuisine have a number of options while visiting Abu Dhabi. Kazu (pictured) at the Yas Viceroy hotel offers all manner of Japanese dishes, from sushi and sashimi to more complex dishes. Regular promotions often include a kaiseki menu, which is a multi-course meal containing small samples of many dishes. The Yacht Club at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi has employed the services of renowned sushi chef Koji Kagawa to make the outlet’s offerings among the best in the city. Benihana at the Beach Rotana is ideal for dinner and a show as the talented teppanyaki chefs impress diners with their skills at the grill. Expect to be wowed by their antics as well as their culinary creations. Finally, for those who can’t decide between Japanese and other Southeast Asian cuisines, Soba is the place to go. The menu is predominantly Japanese, but there are also dishes from Thailand, China, Malaysia and Korea. So whether you’re craving simple sushi and sashimi or want to settle in for a traditional multi-course kaiseki meal, Abu Dhabi’s Japanese restaurants have it all. Itadakimasu (Let's eat!).

The Yacht Club This stylish venue is a firm favourite with sushi lovers, particularly since renowned chef Koji Kagawa revamped the menu with his innovative creations. His ‘out of the box’ dishes, which look just as good as they taste, include wagyu gyoza, lobster sushi rolls, cod in miso sauce with Asian vegetables and yuzu lemon tart. While this is a restaurant for the trendy, its marina-facing location lends a relaxed and casual feel. Take a seat on the comfy blue and white sofas overlooking the luxury yachts in the marina, or head inside where the funky décor and purple lighting add extra vibes to the atmosphere. As well as its creative Japanese cuisine, The Yacht Club is also known for its quirky cocktails, many of which feature vodka. The perfect complement to a Japanese meal is undoubtedly a sushi-style martini and at The Yacht Club, visitors can choose from the cucumber and mint sushi martini, a wasabi sushi martini and more. Continuing with the Japanese theme, try a tempura martini or infuse some colour with a macaroon or fruit combination martini. So whether it’s for a signature sushi dinner, or a sushi cocktail at sunset, The Yacht Club is an ideal place for a Japanese night with a twist. Kazu Combining fine Japanese cuisine with Yas Island views, Kazu is one restaurant that should be at the top of any Asian food lover’s list. The bamboo feature walls and wooden furniture suggest a modern approach, while the brown leather-bound menu features all the traditional fare plus a few house specialities. A visit to a Japanese restaurant would not be complete without sampling some of the sushi and fortunately Kazu’s sushi and sashimi platters with fresh salmon, tuna, hammour and scallops make the perfect starter. For a different take on the standard favourite, try the ‘new-style salmon sashimi’, which is lightly seared and served with olive oil. However, the real must-try is the signature lamb chops cooked with garlic and mint. There are two teppanyaki tables for those who like some light entertainment with their dinner, a sushi/sashimi bar, tempura station, private dining room and a full-range sake bar with experts available to offer the perfect pairing. Soba Casual, light and friendly, Soba is ideal for those who like a variety of Asian cuisines. The menu is predominantly Japanese, with dishes such as sushi and beef teppanyaki. However, there are also splashes of Thai, Malaysian and Singaporean cuisines. Recommended dishes include the signature sushi rolls, especially the salmon philly rolls, which are deliciously fresh and light, while the prawns with basil sauce and the beef teppanyaki from the main menu are not to be missed. As the name suggests, Soba – which is a thin Japanese noodle made from buckwheat – has a great selection of noodle and rice dishes. The restaurant is furnished in neutral tones with plenty of natural light and appeals to those looking for a quick lunch or a leisurely dinner with family and friends. The Chinese chef also passes on his knowledge during weekend sushi classes. Where: Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi When: Daily, noon to 3pm and 7 to 11.30pm (12.30am on weekends) / Contact: 800 101101

Whether it’s juggling kitchen utensils, catching salt and pepper shakers in their hats or making food dance across the grill, the chefs at Benihana have also earned a great reputation for their entertaining teppanyaki antics as well as their excellent cooking skills. This intimate restaurant is popular with all ages and nationalities and the chefs even manage to impress their Japanese guests. Guests sit at communal tables, so while it's not the ideal place for a romantic meal for two, you are guaranteed a fun and highly social evening out. Begin the meal with deliciously fresh sushi, sashimi and prawn tempura, but try not to overdo it. The teppanyaki portion sizes are notoriously generous. Choose from chicken, beef, salmon and seafood, accompanied by rice and a selection of vegetables. Each dish is cooked to perfection right in front of you. However, the real stars of this restaurant are the chefs. Watch closely as they make an onion ring volcano, dice and chop at great speed, or flirt with danger while juggling razor-sharp kitchen utensils. For one lucky guest, they may even finish with a personalised message written across the teppanyaki grill.

Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson
While Abu Dhabi is a traditional emirate that values culture, it is also a social place where visitors can have a fun night out. There are numerous bars, pubs and clubs catering for all occasions, whether it’s a drink with colleagues after a business meeting, catching the latest sporting match or celebrating an important milestone with a loved one. Whether you are seeking a fantastic view, a lively atmosphere or are keen to experience special ladies' night promotions, you can find it all and more in the capital. Those looking for a bird’s-eye view of the city should consider Ray’s Bar on the 62nd floor of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers or relax@12 (pictured) at Aloft Abu Dhabi. For a night of glamour and dancing until the early hours, visit Etoiles at Emirates Palace, while those seeking a more casual evening with friends will be wise to visit Cooper’s Bar & Restaurant (Park Rotana), Hemingway’s (Hilton Abu Dhabi) or Y Bar (Yas Island Rotana). With views of the Arabian Gulf, Beach House (Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi) and The Manhattan Lounge (St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort) cannot be beaten, especially at sunset. Concierge rounds up some of the venues that are known for their sophisticated cocktails and vibrant atmosphere.

Pearls Bar This open-air bar attracts a cool and sophisticated crowd and it’s easy to see why. The night-time views of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the waterfront are nothing short of spectacular and the comfortable U-shaped sofas are perfect for a catch-up with friends. The pearly-white décor reflects the bar’s name, while the extensive cocktail list exudes charm and sophistication. Try the aptly named Mother of Pearl with gin, Cointreau, guava, pineapple and lemon juice and a dash of sugar syrup, or the fabulously fruity Show Girl with raspberry vodka, strawberry purée and lychee juice. Visit on Fridays from 4pm to 3am for UAEbased DJ Rone Jaxx’s Urban Education featuring hip hop, R&B dance hall and funk music for true aficionados. Those looking for a snack will find the diverse tapas menu has something for everyone with dishes such as salt and pepper shrimp with wild ginger and Tahitian lime, plus Sichuan king crab dumplings with spicy herbs. Having firmly established itself as a mustvisit on Abu Dhabi’s nightlife circuit over the past three years, this is one venue that continues to impress. For unrivalled views of Yas Marina Circuit, there is no better place than Rush. Situated in the bridge that crosses the race track and joins the two sections of the ultra-modern Yas Viceroy, Rush is a cocktail bar and lounge with a difference. A creative concept from the designers behind the George V restaurants and Buddha Bars around the world, Rush offers a chilled-out atmosphere and chic house music mixed by the resident DJ. To get in the thick of the action, take a seat at the bar or for a more relaxed approach, join friends in the comfy sofa-style seats by the windows and admire the scenery. Both sides offer brilliant views of Yas Marina and the race track, making it the ultimate vantage point for those planning to watch the 2012 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November. The beverage menu is extensive with a range of modern, traditional and speciality cocktails, fine wines, premium spirits and exotic liqueurs. There is also a range of tapas, mezze and a smorgasbord of finger food to complement the liquid offerings. relax@12 One of the hippest hotspots, relax@12 has fabulous views of the city from all angles, from both inside and outside of the bar. Step into the glass-walled venue, take a seat at one of the booths and gaze at the panoramic view of Al Muzoon Peninsula, the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and beyond to Yas Island. Venture outside to the terrace for fresh air and views of the Abu Dhabi skyline towards Al Bateen Airport and the eastern section of Abu Dhabi island. While it’s one of the best places to catch the sunset and enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail, relax@12 is popular with nocturnal types, with resident DJs playing until the early hours throughout the week. The Asian tapas menu has a distinct Japanese flavour with a heavy focus on sushi and sashimi, while the beverage menu is also decidedly Japanese with a selection of sake and sake cocktails. With some of the best views and a trendsetting crowd moving in, this is clearly not just a place for seeing, but also a place to be seen. Trader Vic’s This quirky bar and restaurant takes its inspiration from the South Pacific Islands. With an eclectic mix of decorations, such as antique tribal masks, tiki carvings, woven-grass wall coverings, fish traps and hand-hewn canoes, it’s almost like stepping into a Polynesian museum. Yet what you won’t find in too many museums around the world is a vibrant bar mixing creative cocktail concoctions with a restaurant that serves a mix of Polynesian, French, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. After meal times the Mai Tai cocktail lounge takes the mood up a notch with a Cuban band and the temptation of more than 150 delicious tropical drinks from around the world, including the bar’s famous namesake, the Mai Tai cocktail. In a city where new restaurants and bars are opening on a regular basis, Trader Vic’s, in contrast, has been a firm fixture on the city’s dining scene for almost 20 years. NEED TO KNOW Although the UAE is a Muslim country, alcohol is permitted in several emirates including Abu Dhabi. Wine, Champagne, spirits and beer are available in most five-star hotels, but there is a zero tolerance to drinkdriving and being drunk in public, both punishable with a fine and, in more serious cases, imprisonment.

Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Abu Dhabi. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. It costs approximately AED35 to AED50 to smoke and the most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling as many as 50 cigarettes. If you’re after an authentic taste of Middle Eastern culture, however, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply, blow down the pipe to get rid of smoke build-up in the water and share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.

{
my LIFE IN ABU DHABI
}
Emirati Shamma Nasser Al Nowais, managing director and owner of Anahata Wellness Spa, chats about her life in Abu Dhabi
1
1 Yas Island 2 Amador Restaurant & Cellar
I grew up in Abu Dhabi and a lot has changed in my lifetime. The past 10 years has been particularly remarkable. There’s entertainment now on a scale we’ve never seen before. I remember as a child the only entertainment was the ice rink. Today my daughter attends live concerts by Beyoncé and Rihanna. What I like about Abu Dhabi is that it’s also a quiet, peaceful and safe place to live. My top recommendation for visitors is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is an important religious, national and architectural landmark initiated by His Highness, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Visitors must be dressed appropriately and those who aren’t will be refused entry. Appropriate dress is modest, conservative, loosefitting clothing, long sleeves, long skirts and trousers. Women will be given an abaya and head cover. Another place to visit is Manarat Al Saadiyat, which means ‘the place of enlightenment’. It is a cultural centre designed to bring the vision of the island
to life through The Saadiyat Story. Near Saadiyat Island is Yas Island, which hosts motor racing events and is home to Yas Marina Circuit, which has hosted the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since 2009. Yas Island is considered the most prestigious leisure destination in Abu Dhabi. Emirates Palace hotel is one of the city’s most popular landmarks and is the venue for many of the city’s cultural activities. Another cultural landmark is Qasr Al Hosn, also known as the ‘white fort’ or ‘old fort’. This palace is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi and dates back to 1793. Located on Sheikh Zayed the First Street, it was the royal palace and seat of government until 1966. The fort is not open to the public, but the area contains the Cultural Foundation which hosts a number of art, music and film events each year. When it comes to restaurants, I like Prego’s at the Beach Rotana because it has good food and a great amosphere. I also like Amador Restaurant & Cellar,
Amador Restaurant & Cellar is a fine-dining concept offering Spanish-influenced cuisine. It’s a new experience, which is fun and daring
which is a fine-dining concept offering Spanish-influenced cuisine at the Park Rotana. It’s a new experience, which is fun and daring. The food is exquisite; the chefs mix different spices and flavours. I really enjoyed the candy floss with passion fruit and chocolate with black pepper. Of course, for those looking to unwind, I recommend paying a visit to the Anahata Wellness Spa to try our signature Seven Chakras Crystal Massage. With traditional Indian ayurveda and Thai healing therapies, the spa offers a holistic approach to keeping its visitors at their best.
