The iconic mosque was opened to the public in 2007 and is one of the few in the region accessible to non-Muslims. Experience Ice skating

Whether you’re a budding Olympian or merely a beginner, Abu Dhabi’s numerous ice-skating rinks offer hours of ‘chilled-out’ fun. There are rinks in malls across the emirate and all offer tuition for those looking to polish their skills. One of the biggest is at Abu Dhabi Ice Rink, an Olympic-sized facility at Zayed Sports City (pictured), which can accommodate up to 400 skaters. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most picturesque structures in the capital. It features 80 domes, approximately 1,000 columns, 24-carat gold-plated chandeliers and the world’s largest handwoven carpet. Heritage Village, a recreation of a traditional oasis village, provides a glimpse of the country’s past, including the falaj irrigation system and workshops where craftsmen demonstrate traditional skills. Al Ain Museum, next to the Sultan or Eastern Fort, provides an overview of the UAE’s traditions and culture, alongside the much older story of the people who inhabited the area. I also recommend a visit to the world’s biggest theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and its Formula Rossa, a rollercoaster which reaches speeds of 240kmh. A desert safari is an authentic experience that showcases the grandeur of the dunes, famed Arabian hospitality and camel riding. Al Forsan International Sports Resort offers horse riding, go karting, dune buggies, paintball and wakeboarding. Abu Dhabi is an ideal place to shop for designer brands and Marina Mall and Abu Dhabi Mall are the best places to do this. Miraj Islamic Art Centre, next to Marina Mall, sells carpets, silks and handwoven pashminas, so it is a good place for souvenir shopping. For restaurants, I recommend Azur Mediterranean in Al Raha Beach Hotel. Further afield, there is Italian food at Cipriani on Yas Island, seafood at Fish Market at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi and Emirati food at Mezlai at Emirates Palace. For nightlife, visitors can head to the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri for Left Bank and Eight bars.

Different strokes From the inscriptions on the gates of the Taj Mahal in India to the writing on the panels of the Bursa Grand Mosque in Turkey, the centuries-old art of calligraphy also holds a special place in the history of Arabic art. Greatly revered in the Islamic world, calligraphy was the primary means for the preservation of the Qu’ran through the ages. Merging artistry and great learning, calligraphy is still seen as a symbol of Middle Eastern artistry. Whether purchasing ancient and traditional styles or embracing a more modern approach, this sacred script appeals to tourists in a way that surpasses language boundaries. Written from right to left, the fluidity and delicacy of Arabic script is a skill often passed down through generations. Today, artists still very much rely on traditional tools with angled reed pens, known as qalam, favoured because they allow great flexibility. While characters are typically written in black ink on starchdyed paper, there are many ways to have your chosen piece customised, including marbled parchment and script in gold or silver ink. Calligraphy can also be found on items of cothing such as shawls (see page 20) and calligraphy art is widely available from souks to galleries including Miraj Islamic Centre in the Marina area.

Worth a thousand words

From the vastness of the surrounding desserts to an ever-changing skyline, the Middle East provides an incredible canvas. Historic Arabic art that drew inspiration from faith steered away from human figures as a reference to piety. Today, thanks to the emergence of exciting new mediums, such as digital manipulation, the modern market is awash with striking pieces that provide a fresh take on historical views. Merging the two worlds of contemporary culture and tradition has influences all art forms. Fatema Al Mazrouie, one of the first Emirati artists to be headhunted by the world-famous London auction house Sotherby’s, explores her passion by taking a closer look at Muslim women around the world. Stating the importance of an artist’s message as “the most

comprehensive way to communicate with people”, she believes that there is no more formal channel of communication to convey society’s issues, ideas and concepts.” Emirati artists are making more of an impact on the international scene and the scope of contemporary art available is proving a big attraction for visitors. One of the UAE’s most influential artists and gallery owners Jalal Luqman offers some advice for buyers. “It’s important that you find out the track record of artists if you’re not familiar with their work. Ensure they have some kind of standing in the field and that the artist has a developing future. That way, even though you’re buying a piece that you visually like, it will also mean that you’re buying something that over time will increase in value,” he said.

Enjoying a golden age for centuries and still sought-after the world over, Persian rugs and Oriental carpets are renowned for their rich heritage and intricate designs. From the homes of royalty to the walls of great museums, these decadent styles of rugs and carpets have formed a significant part in the history of collectable art. Wandering through the halls of the Miraj Islamic Centre offers a greater appreciation of the detailed workmanship that goes into creating the rugs, especially when it becomes clear that it takes a single weaver months or even years to produce. Imtiyaz Ahmad Beigh, regional marketing manager of the centre, describes the intricacy involved. “Without actually knowing what the final image will look like, each weaver follows a pre-written code of colours and stitches, which over time evolves into the final design,” Beigh says. As the price tags can vary considerably, it’s best to find out exactly what determines a good investment. Beigh explains that key factors often include “the size and origin of

Both prominent artists, Kanoo and Luqman actively promote the growth and development of the capital’s art scene with a mix of exhibitions by both local and international artists. Translated as ‘the place of enlightenment’, the visitor centre was designed to showcase the story of the cultural hub that is Saadiyat Island. Song and dance Stories shared by Emiratis from hundreds of years ago describing accounts of love and of wars won and lost are being kept alive through performances of traditional song and dance

The UAEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s traditional dances are a cultural spectacle not to be missed. Largely performed by men, although women play their own parts, the dances are dramatic re-enactments of battles, victories and religious celebrations. The ancient ayyalah is one of the most popular folk dances and signifies a victorious battle. Wearing the national dress, the kandura (white robe) and gutra (headscarf), Emirati men form two or four rows facing each other and hold wooden sticks that represent swords. Hundreds of men perform this dance together, while musicians beat drums. A single dancer then begins to chant or sing poetry while two dancers take to the middle of the lines, spinning their sticks or, in some versions of the dance, a rifle. The remaining dancers sway and dip their heads in time with the music. In the past, tribes treated the dances more as contests and would meet to exhibit their dancing and singing skills. Nowadays the dances are seen at more joyful occasions such as weddings, national days and Eid holidays. With an ancient heritage spanning hundreds of years, variations of the dances have developed across the Middle East. The harbiya dance, for instance, originated in Oman, but has been adapted over time into a unique spectacle performed across to the UAE. It too tells the story of war and, along with other regional dances such as the liwa, was used to raise fighting spirit.

These dances and their variations have been passed from generation to generation with each conveying a different story or theme, not only of battles but sometimes of love and even hunting and fishing. The poetry sung or chanted during the dance falls into one of two categories and is integral to the history of the UAE; poetry of the sand and poetry of the sea. Less than a century ago, the UAE was sparsely populated with Bedouin tribes living in harsh desert conditions. As international trade increased, settlements appeared around waterways where fabrics, dates and spices could be traded. The population lived from the sea and as pearls became valuable, so did the practice of pearl diving.

It is these activities that have contributed to the rich heritage of dance, combined with input from other Middle Eastern nationalities that travelled to the area during this time to work and trade. In other parts of the world, important traditions similar to the UAE’s folk dances are all but dying out as sports and popular culture become favoured pastimes of the young. However, national government and local authorities are keen to uphold the region’s cultural dances and actively encourage their preservation through performance. Chairman of the Ayal Nasir Society, Masood Rashed Al Suwaidi, is determined to reverse the more recent downward trend that has seen fewer young men taking part in cultural dance.

FA S T FA C T As a musical dedication to Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the world’s largest dance was performed in February 2008. A total of 221 men completed five minutes of rifle spinning and rhythmic stepping.

“Traditional dancing is an important part of our heritage and we, with the support of the UAE government, believe it is essential to pass this on for generations to come,” he says. Al Suwaidi is a member of three organisations, the earliest of which dates back to the pearl diving era of 1877. The Ayal Nasir Society aims to popularise not only traditional dancing, but other cultural activities such as Arabic art, music and sailing. Drag racing Think you’re fast? Why not put your skills to the test over the quarter-mile on Yas Marina Circuit’s drag racing strip. Shooting The UAE’s only Olympic medal was won in double trap shooting by Sheikh Ahmad bin Mohammad bin Hasher Al Maktoum in Greece in 2004, so it’s no surprise that shooting is a popular pastime here. Known as the ‘first gem’, pearls are beautiful from the moment they are plucked from the heart of the oyster. Unlike gemstones, pearls require no polishing or cutting before being set into stunning pieces of jewellery. Indeed, the iridescent lustre of pearls has enchanted people since ancient times. One modern-day admirer is the late Nicholas Paspaley, a refugee who travelled from Greece to the northern coast of Australia in the 1930s. As he quickly discovered, his new home harboured rich pearl beds and the young entrepreneur set about finding these hidden treasures. He bought his first traditional pearling lugger aged 19 and started his own business, navigating his way through the perils of hardhat diving amid cyclones and shark-infested waters. Despite the challenges, Nicholas did find the pearl of his dreams and brought it safely home. His prize catch laid the foundations for his eponymous company, which grew to become a worldwide sensation and continues to be run by the family today. With its incredible pearling heritage, the story of Paspaley has particular resonance in the UAE, where the pearling industry can be traced back hundreds of years.

Cultivating a legacy Here in the UAE at the turn of the 20 th century, 1,200 boats were recorded pearling along what was known then as the Trucial coast. These boats were crewed by around 12,000 men, a large number of them pearl divers. Around the same time, Broome in Western Australia had become a global hub for mother of pearl (extracted from inside the oyster shell), supplying 70 percent of global demand to be used mostly as buttons. However, the golden age of pearling was not to last. The invention of the cultured pearl, pioneered in Japan in the early 20th century, provided an easier, more effecient way of acquiring pearls. After World War II, the Australian pearling industry all but disappeared as more affordable materials were developed for jewellery. It was during this precarious time in the pearling industry’s history that Nicholas Paspaley discovered a renewed

passion for the pearl. Inspired by the techniques developed by the Japanese in culturing pearls, he dreamt of utilising the same technology to grow exquisite South Sea pearls of unrivalled size and magnificence off the coast of Australia. Partnering with Mother Nature herself proved to be fraught with difficulties and the quest for the holy grail of the pearling world was long and arduous. Nicholas Paspaley’s passion and persistence was finally compensated with fruitful harvests of luminous pearls, bringing his vision to life and the company continued to grow.

Sushi may be the most famous of Japanese dishes, but there is more to this fascinating cuisine than raw fish rolled in rice and seaweed. It is one of the healthiest cuisines in the world, using staples such as rice, fish, seaweed, soy bean products and vegetables. It combines a complex mixture of ingredients to create a delicate flavour and balance, while maintaining painstaking attention to detail in presentation. Well-known dishes include tempura (lightly battered vegetables and prawns), yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and teriyaki (meat and fish grilled in a sweet soy sauce marinade). Those looking to experience authentic Japanese cuisine have a number of options while visiting Abu Dhabi. Kazu (pictured) at the Yas Viceroy hotel offers all manner of Japanese dishes, from sushi and sashimi to more complex dishes. Regular promotions often include a kaiseki menu, which is a multi-course meal containing small samples of many dishes. The Yacht Club at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi has employed the services of renowned sushi chef Koji Kagawa to make the outlet’s offerings among the best in the city. Benihana at the Beach Rotana is ideal for dinner and a show as the talented teppanyaki chefs impress diners with their skills at the grill. The Yacht Club This stylish venue is a firm favourite with sushi lovers, particularly since renowned chef Koji Kagawa revamped the menu with his innovative creations. His ‘out of the box’ dishes, which look just as good as they taste, include wagyu gyoza, lobster sushi rolls, cod in miso sauce with Asian vegetables and yuzu lemon tart. While this is a restaurant for the trendy, its marina-facing location lends a relaxed and casual feel. Take a seat on the comfy blue and white sofas overlooking the luxury yachts in the marina, or head inside where the funky décor and purple lighting add extra vibes to the atmosphere. As well as its creative Japanese cuisine, The Yacht Club is also known for its quirky cocktails, many of which feature vodka. Kazu Combining fine Japanese cuisine with Yas Island views, Kazu is one restaurant that should be at the top of any Asian food lover’s list. The bamboo feature walls and wooden furniture suggest a modern approach, while the brown leather-bound menu features all the traditional fare plus a few house specialities. A visit to a Japanese restaurant would not be complete without sampling some of the sushi and fortunately Kazu’s sushi and sashimi platters with fresh salmon, tuna, hammour and scallops make the perfect starter. For a different take on the standard favourite, try the ‘new-style salmon sashimi’, which is lightly seared and served with olive oil. However, the real must-try is the signature lamb chops cooked with garlic and mint. Soba Casual, light and friendly, Soba is ideal for those who like a variety of Asian cuisines. The menu is predominantly Japanese, with dishes such as sushi and beef teppanyaki. However, there are also splashes of Thai, Malaysian and Singaporean cuisines. Recommended dishes include the signature sushi rolls, especially the salmon philly rolls, which are deliciously fresh and light, while the prawns with basil sauce and the beef teppanyaki from the main menu are not to be missed. As the name suggests, Soba – which is a thin Japanese noodle made from buckwheat – has a great selection of noodle and rice dishes. The restaurant is furnished in neutral tones with plenty of natural light and appeals to those looking for a quick lunch or a leisurely dinner with family and friends. I grew up in Abu Dhabi and a lot has changed in my lifetime. The past 10 years has been particularly remarkable. There’s entertainment now on a scale we’ve never seen before. I remember as a child the only entertainment was the ice rink. Today my daughter attends live concerts by Beyoncé and Rihanna. What I like about Abu Dhabi is that it’s also a quiet, peaceful and safe place to live. My top recommendation for visitors is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is an important religious, national and architectural landmark initiated by His Highness, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Visitors must be dressed appropriately and those who aren’t will be refused entry. Appropriate dress is modest, conservative, loosefitting clothing, long sleeves, long skirts and trousers. Women will be given an abaya and head cover. Another place to visit is Manarat Al Saadiyat, which means ‘the place of enlightenment’. It is a cultural centre designed to bring the vision of the island

to life through The Saadiyat Story. Near Saadiyat Island is Yas Island, which hosts motor racing events and is home to Yas Marina Circuit, which has hosted the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since 2009. Yas Island is considered the most prestigious leisure destination in Abu Dhabi. Emirates Palace hotel is one of the city’s most popular landmarks and is the venue for many of the city’s cultural activities. Another cultural landmark is Qasr Al Hosn, also known as the ‘white fort’ or ‘old fort’. This palace is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi and dates back to 1793. Located on Sheikh Zayed the First Street, it was the royal palace and seat of government until 1966. The fort is not open to the public, but the area contains the Cultural Foundation which hosts a number of art, music and film events each year. When it comes to restaurants, I like Prego’s at the Beach Rotana because it has good food and a great amosphere. I also like Amador Restaurant & Cellar,

The food is exquisite; the chefs mix different spices and flavours. I really enjoyed the candy floss with passion fruit and chocolate with black pepper. Of course, for those looking to unwind, I recommend paying a visit to the Anahata Wellness Spa to try our signature Seven Chakras Crystal Massage. With traditional Indian ayurveda and Thai healing therapies, the spa offers a holistic approach to keeping its visitors at their best.
