At any time of year Dubai is a destination for shoppers. Sprawling malls provide not only a vast selection of luxury brands, but also a selection of fun attractions which can be enjoyed in air-conditioned comfort – an additional benefit during the hot summer months. So what could possibly make the ultimate retail experience even more memorable? That is the challenge Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) rises to every year. Launched in 1998, the month-long extravaganza, which commences June 14, is now in its 15th year. Over 70 malls take part in the festival and in addition to millions of dirhams in discounts and giveaways, DSS is a family-friendly affair with a full programme of events aimed at children of all ages. To learn more about what to expect this year, turn to page 22. Of course, while shopping is a major part of the Dubai experience there is a variety of other activities to be enjoyed throughout your stay. During the month of June temperatures soar and if you’re keen to cool off we invite you to turn to page 54, where you can read all about the city’s icy-themed attractions, or page 60 for you all you need to know about the region’s most exceptional diving spots. Culture vultures should direct their attentions to our Discover section which begins on page 45 and this month showcases the history of dhows. Of the lengthy list of attractions it’s important to tick off a visit to Aquaventure – a jumbo-sized water park within the Atlantis The Palm, Dubai resort – and a kayaking trip around the outside of the island, which can be arranged through your concierge.

Be sure to have your camera handy as the photo opportunities are once-in-a-lifetime shots. Location: Burj Khalifa, Downtown Dubai. Time: Sun to Wed, 10am to 10pm. Thu to Sat, 10am to midnight. EXPERIENCE A day of spa pampering

If globetrotting has left you washed out and weary, a few days in Dubai will fix that. With an array of first-rate spas throughout the city’s top hotels, Dubai is the perfect place to indulge in some five-star pampering. Whether you’re keen on massages, facials, scrubs or wraps, there’s a treatment to suit every type of traveller. Our top recommendations include Mandara Spa at The Monarch Dubai (pictured). Turn to page 84 for a list of hotels, most of which have in-house spas.

TASTE Brunch

If your stay takes in a Friday (the first day of the UAE weekend) use this opportunity to experience a Dubai brunch. Unlike the calm culinary experience it is elsewhere around the world, brunch in Dubai is legendary. With buffet tables laden with gourmet goods and an unending supply of freeflowing drinks, you won’t be left wanting. Our favourite spots include Farriers at The Meydan, which overlooks the world-famous Meydan Racecourse and Al Bahou at Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel (pictured). Turn to page 92 for a list of hotels, many of which serve Friday brunches.

Desert driving

L ahcen Sa adaoui, chief concierge at the Ibn Bat tuta Gate Hotel share s his tips for a fun-filled stay in Dubai

Dubai is abundant with jaw-dropping views and I always recommend guests visit either At the Top, which is the observation deck on the 124th of the Burj Khalifa, or Skyview Bar in the Burj Al Arab, which offers amazing views of the Arabian Gulf. A lot of visitors come here to shop, but with so many malls to choose from knowing where to start can be tricky. First up is The Dubai Mall, the biggest shopping centre in the world with over 1,000 stores. Another top retail spot is BurJuman which is located in Bur Dubai and is home to Saks Fifth Avenue. Ibn Battuta Mall, with its unique design and built to celebrate the travels of the famous Arabic explorer Ibn Battuta, also has a wide variety of stores to explore. Dubai is a city that comes to life at night and many of our guests ask which bars and clubs they should visit. Trilogy at Madinat Jumeirah is known for its cool club sounds and is always a big hit. For a glamorous hangout, Cavalli Club at The Fairmont Dubai ticks all the boxes. Alternatively the guests may be looking for something romantic, in which case I would recommend Nassimi Beach at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai for sundowners by the sea. Alternatively dinner aboard river restaurant Bateaux Dubai gives visitors the opportunity to take in the idyllic views of ‘old Dubai’ as they sail down Dubai Creek by moonlight. In addition to the glitz and glamour, there is also a historic side to the emirate. I recommend guests take time to visit the Bastakiya quarter, which is Dubai’s old district. Another must-visit is the Shiekh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. This non-profit organisation, based in the Bastakiya quarter, is dedicated to offering unique activities, such as cultural breakfasts and historic tours. I also recommend a visit to Jumeirah Mosque, one of only a few mosques in Dubai open to the public.

A trip out of the city into the Arabian Desert is an awe-inspiring adventure. The unspoilt dunes can be reached within an hour, with tour operators providing pickups from Dubai’s hotels. Those looking for excitement can taste the thrill of desert driving, while a trip to a traditional desert camp provides a more sedate experience. Turn to page 84 for a list of tour operators.

SHOP

Retail revelry Dubai is abundant with shopping malls and retail revelers should direct their attentions to BurJuman, which has a large selection of designer brands including Cartier, Dior (pictured) and Christian Lacroix. It is also home to Saks Fifth Avenue. Turn to page 78 for a list of malls. Contact: 04 3520222.

DISCOVER Dubai Museum

If the ultra-modern side of Dubai is all you know, step back in time at Dubai Museum. Located in Bur Dubai, inside the Al Fahidi Fort, you’ll find artefacts, photographs and life-sized displays. Open Sat to Thu from 8.30am to 8.30pm and Friday from 2.30 to 8.30pm, admission is AED3 for adults and AED1 for children under six. Contact: 04 3531862.

LOOKING AHEAD

Shisha

The intoxicating aroma of shisha smoke wafting through the air is a common one in Dubai, as the sociable pursuit of shisha smoking has become part of the rich culture of the Middle East. Derived from the Persian word shishe meaning ‘glass’, the pipe consists of a bowl at the top of the pipe, which is packed with flavoured tobacco and covered with a piece of pierced foil. This pastime sees groups of friends meet and share f lavours such as vanilla, apple, grape, strawberry, raspberry and mint. Location: Served at most hotels and at many cafés throughout the city. Price: Approximately AED60 per pipe.

Eid al Fitr August 19 to 22 To mark the end of Ramadan the three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr (the Festival of FastBreaking) commences on August 19. On the day of Eid, Muslims gather early in the morning to perform the Eid prayer.

Entry is AED30. Children under five go for free. For more information visit gitex.com

Snapshot Winds of change While the vast expansion of the last four decades has seen Dubai transformed from a seaside fishing village to a paradigm of modern architectural excellence, the old-world charm of the Bastakiya quarter is steadfast. The oldest residential part of the city, its maze-like streets were originally the neighbourhood of Dubai’s wealthy merchants whose ships sailed the seas between Dubai, Iran, India and other major trading posts. Hugging the bank of the Creek in Bur Dubai, this charming area has been restored over the years and is now something of an open-air exhibit of times gone by. Its traditional courtyard houses are distinguished by their innovative wind towers. The original air-conditioning solution, these clever structures capture the slightest breezes and funnel the cooling wind down into the living areas. Historically the wealth of a family would have been measured by the number of wind towers on a house – the wealthier the family, the more wind towers.

Long haute summer International fashion shows, irresistible discounts and millions of dirhams in giveaways – ladies and gentlemen, we give you Dubai Summer Surprises

Q w o r d s b y c at h e r i n e l a n g l e y

From Prada to Pucci, Stella McCartney to Stella Luna, you name it, Dubai’s got it and recent studies show that the emirate has overtaken established markets such as New York, Hong Kong and Paris when it comes to availability of luxury labels. While Dubai boasts year-round appeal for those in the pursuit of retail pleasures, June is a particularly popular month because it signals the start of Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) – the region’s biggest entertainment and shopping fiesta. Launched back in 1998, the retail extravaganza is now in its 15th year and has beckoned more than 22 million visitors from across the globe since its inception. “In addition to major discounts, shoppers can look forward to millions of dirhams in giveaways, raffles and free family entertainment while they browse the malls,” explains HE Laila Mohd Suhail, CEO of Dubai Events and Promotions Establishments.

Retail detail While DSS offers a multitude of attractions, including fashion shows, dancers, acrobats and even the chance to walk away with cash or a car, the obvious draw is the shopping. “DSS is the perfect time for savvy shoppers to indulge in a spot of retail therapy and update their wardrobes as there is always a variety of bargains to be had,” says personal shopper Christina Karachaliou (omyglamour.com). “This season, look out for vibrant colours such as bright oranges, warm yellows, nautical blues and rosy reds, which are all making a big impact in the spring/

summer collections.” Christina also recommends taking the opportunity to acquire a few key fashion items which will carry you through to next summer. “Ladies should look out for staple pieces such as shift and maxi dresses, which hold their style. Tropical-coloured jumpsuits and pleated maxi skirts are all on trend. Men should stock up on wardrobe classics such as tailored suits and woven-silk ties. A classic pair of black leather shoes is always a wise investment as shoes are the first thing people see when you walk into the room.” So with 70 of the city’s malls taking part in the month-long festival, which

For the latest designer labels direct your attentions to the shiny shop fronts that line Fashion Avenue – a section dedicated to haute couture labels. Other high-profile malls taking part in DSS include one of the city’s most time-honoured retail spots, BurJuman, located in Bur Dubai. Home to Saks Fifth Avenue it houses labels unavailable elsewhere in the city, including Prada. For those who enjoy shopping on a smaller scale, look no further than Mercato – an Italian-themed shopping mall on Jumeira Beach Road which ticks all the right retail boxes with a diverse mix of brands including Hugo Boss and Massimo Dutti.

Of course, in addition to searching for bargains in the mall, savvy shoppers can look forward to a fantastic variety of family entertainment. “As well as being a shopping extravaganza, DSS is everything to do with fun,” says Mohd Suhail. “It’s heavily geared towards families with each mall offering a programme of events for children of all ages.” Fun activities, raffles, prizes and gifts bring the summer festival’s slogan ‘Big fun for little ones’ to life, while diehard DSS fans can celebrate festival mascot, Modhesh, at Modhesh World – the largest indoor entertainment venue in the Middle East. Located at Dubai World Trade Centre, Modhesh World offers a multitude of activities to cater to tots, tweens and teens, with 40 themed zones offering everything from the latest video games to international cartoons and stage shows. Don’t just take our word for it though, because Modhesh World has welcomed more than five million visitors (and counting) since it first opened its doors in 2000. During the last 12 years it has played host to an assortment of international and regional shows, including cartoon icons Hello Kitty, Ben 10 and the Powerpuff Girls.

Culture club While shopping and entertainment take centre stage, DSS also hosts the Min Bladi Al Emarat event at the Star Atrium in The Dubai Mall displaying various aspects of Emirati culture. Visitors are welcomed by volunteers who serve dates, tea, Arabic coffee and sweets. “We are very proud to be participating in this event,” says Nawal Obeid, an Emirati volunteer. “This kind of event makes me proud of my heritage.” In addition to traditional entertainment, which is showcased against a backdrop of Bedouin tents, informative displays tell the stories of traditional cooking, cloth weaving and henna painting. Ultimately, whether you’re looking for a bargain buy, an afternoon’s entertainment or a touch of cultural edification, it’s all there for the taking at DSS.

LEGACY OF the DHOW For centuries the wooden dhow has sailed the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf and still provides an essential mode of transport in the UAE today

Q W o r d s b y C h a r l o t t e Va n D e n B r o u q u e

With its billowing sails reflected in the design of architectural wonders such as the Burj Al Arab and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, the graceful Arabian dhow and its billowing sails is a cultural symbol of the UAE. While the majestic vessel has become an emblem of nostalgia for days gone by, the history of these boats is humble and rooted in the modest beginnings of the emirate. To look at modern-day Dubai, it’s hard to imagine that just over 100 years ago the emirate was little more than a sleepy fishing village with a f ledgling economy kept buoyant by pearl diving and trading. Dubai Creek, with its direct route to the sea, facilitated trade and transport and as a result communities settled around the sandbanks and made a living from the water. Dhow boats sailed as far as East Africa and India to sell their wares, providing an essential source of revenue to the city. Without motors or mod cons, the humble crafts were powered by the wind and skilled navigators looked to the stars for guidance to point them in the right direction. Of course, to look at the simple structure of a classic dhow it’s hard to believe that these vintage vessels made it across the high seas. Yet while the journeys were fraught with danger, successful crews often returned home with profits from bartering their goods.

Modest creations With modern technological advances it seems hard to believe that dhow-building skills were passed down through the generations by word of mouth and dhows were built without drawings, plans or templates. The measurements and designs were known only to the boat makers. Using natural resources, the dhow was originally created from teak, by an extremely labour-intensive process where logs were sawn, chiselled and drilled by hand before being assembled. The huge, white triangular sails called lateens were traditionally stitched together from sheets of white cotton and facilitated smooth sailing as they billowed in the wind, pulling the

boats quickly through the water. Thousands of men journeyed out on the boats during the summer months, some seeking their fortune and others just hoping to make enough money to last them until the following pearl-diving season. Divers would leap overboard and spend up to two minutes as far as 40 metres below the surface, searching the sea floor for oysters and wrenching them from the rocks. Back onboard all oysters were opened by the captain after sunset, when the white lateen sails glowed orange from the fires on board. Much like any fishing crews today, each member would take home a salary based on the value of the catch, or in this case pearls retrieved.

While the job was hazardous and claimed lives, it paid well. Initially the UAE subsisted on a barter economy, but pearl diving cultivated profits that enabled steady growth. The once nomadic population made permanent settlements around trading ports. Tribes formed dhow-ownership cooperatives, paying for the dhows’ upkeep and then splitting profits. Yet the worldwide economic depression in the 1930s, combined with the Japanese discovery of the cultured pearl, heralded the end of pearling in the Gulf. When oil was discovered in the 1950s, it further transformed the economy providing new opportunities for local people.

A cultural legacy

To sample the hustle and bustle of dhow traders first hand, head down to the Dubai wharfage – located in Deira, opposite the Hilton Dubai Creek hotel. Watch the traders as they load up their heavy cargo en route to destinations around the subcontinent and Africa. Despite their heavy workload, the traders are welcoming to visitors

Ancient sailing traditions have not been forgot ten, however. T hese beguiling vessels still have a purpose. Salah Bin Toak is the owner of Bin Toak Yachts and his family have been living in the region for more than 120 years. He regularly builds dhows for customers. “A 1,500-tonne dhow can take as long as three years to build and costs in the region of AED5 million,” explains Toak. “We have customers from a l l around the region who want dhows for different purposes. It could be for cargo, fishing or diving purposes and we build on request.” In addition to commercial dhows, purpose-built racing dhows take to the water for the annual traditional dhow racing season from September to May. Not only is this a keenly observed sporting event, it is also a celebration of the country’s fascinating culture and heritage. Similarly, t he wooden boats st ill dominate Dubai Creek as they line up along the banks. Some operate as restaurants while others can be seen at the Dhow Wharfage in Deira docked and ready to be loaded with goods. Whatever the purpose, the image of the dhow resonates in many things – architecture, songs, stamps, money and crests – and will forever be ingrained within the history of the United Arab Emirates.

On the waterfront From retail therapy to Michelin-starred cuisine and world-class golfing action, Dubai Festival City has it all

A quick glance at Dubai’s skyline tells you one thing; this is a city that doesn’t do things by halves. From the world’s tallest tower to manmade islands visible from space, the emirate’s new generation of architectural developments is designed with one objective in mind – to make an impression. Dubai Festival City is a development that definitely does that. Located in the north east of the city and rising along the banks of the historic Dubai Creek, this waterfront destination is touted as a ‘city within a city’, ticking all the boxes for residents and business with lots of entertainment. In the heart of the neighbourhood you’ll find Festival Centre. This Creek-side shopping mall is home to department stores, high-street chains, designer jewellery brands and a 12-screen cinema. If you want to explore outdoors, head outside to Canal Walk were you’ll find pleasant waterfront walkways and over 40 shops and cafés.

A short walk from the mall lies Festival Marina, a Mediterranean-style luxury yachting hub that is evocative of the French Riviera. Every Friday and Saturday night throughout the cooler months of the year, this picturesque stretch comes to life as musicians take to Dubai’s only floating stage and entertain onlookers with a variety of musical acts. Along the waterfront you’ll also find Marina Restaurant Pavilion which offers a multitude of enticing culinary choices. British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver opened Jamie’s Italian in 2010 and guests can look forward to classic dishes such as trout tagliatelle and prawn linguine. Alternatively, visit the iconic Hard Rock Café, which opened its doors late last year.

Inside there’s a stage for live entertainment programmes or guests can enjoy al fresco drinks on the terrace. The Al Badia Golf Club is a five-minute taxi ride from Festival Centre. Designed by distinguished golf course architect Robert Trent Jones II, this 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course is run by the InterContinental Dubai Festival City and includes the region’s only TaylorMade Performance Lab offering motion capture technology for your swing. After a round on the pristine greens, be sure to visit the club’s signature restaurant Blades. Well known for its panoramic views of the course, dreamy smoked salmon bagels and melt-in-the-mouth apple crumble, it’s a great location to chill before or after a game.

COOLER CLIMES If the soaring summer temperatures become too much to bear, seek out these cooling adventures

Q As June temperatures rise throughout the region, even dedicated sun worshippers will be seeking solace from the heat. The good news is that the UAE is well equipped to take the barometer to below zero, so if you’re keen to chill out, do it in style with our round-up of the coolest venues. A top spot is Ski Dubai, the Middle East’s first indoor ski resort. In addition to 22,500 square metres of real snow in the desert, this unique spot has jumps, toboggans and an après ski café that serves piping hot chocolate. For something a little less energetic, cool customers should direct their attentions to Chillout (pictured), the region’s only ice bar. With temperatures of -6 degrees Celsius, this chilly haunt is entirely carved out of ice. Alternatively, don a hat, scarf and gloves and glide into a magical winter wonderland at Dubai Ice Rink. Located at The Dubai Mall, this Olympic-sized rink is suitable for both learners and dab hands. For those who don’t mind venturing further afield, 90 minutes down the road you’ll find the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, which is home to Iceland Waterpark. While this wintry playground isn’t actually made of ice it will keep the entire family cool with its ice-themed attractions. Read on to find out more...

Dubai Ice Rink Whether you’re practising pirouettes or learning a basic glide, the Olympic-sized ice rink at The Dubai Mall provides a chilled-out way to wile away a hot summer day. With a full programme of sessions for all abilities and tastes, including two-hour disco sessions complete with DJ and nightclub-style lighting, you’ll feel cool regardless of your skating skills. In addition to ordinary skating times, the rink also hosts the Emirates Hockey League Cup games on weekend mornings from 8.15am. For those who don’t wish to attempt a subzero power play and would rather sit back and watch the slippery action, spectator seating is available around the rink. Ski Dubai One of Dubai’s most well-known attractions Ski Dubai brings a touch of St Moritz to Mall of the Emirates. Skiing is not alien to the Middle East, with resorts in the mountains above Beirut and in Iran, but there is still something daringly different and exciting about this slope. The first indoor ski slope in the region caters for all ages and abilities, with green, blue, red and black runs, as well as a variety of jumps and ramps. If that sounds too hardcore, head to the impressive Snow Park (the world’s largest) at the foot of this mountain-style resort for family-friendly activities. To add to the fun Ski Dubai recently welcomed a colony of gentoo and king penguins and nature-loving visitors can make their own ‘PengFriends’ through a unique one-on-one encounter. Chillout It is easy to see why many have described Chillout as the coolest venue in Dubai. Entirely carved from ice, right down to the glasses from which you’ll sip your mocktails, this is the perfect place to go to escape the summer heat. All the necessary clothing is provided, including thermal coats, gloves and shoes and then you’re free to enjoy your complimentary drink (which is included in the AED60 admission price) in snug style. Hot chocolate is also an option if the thought of an ice-cold drink leaves your teeth chattering. Better still, Chillout is the first ice lounge in the world to serve hot food, with a menu ranging from soups to Oriental kebabs. While there, check out the ice sculptures of some of Dubai’s most famous buildings. Although you can stay in the lounge for as long as you like, the recommended optimum exposure time is around 40 minutes. Iceland Waterpark Cleverly tailored to provide tots, tweens and teens with a wide variety of wintry water activities, Iceland Waterpark is a novel way to keep cool during the hot period. Admittedly, real snow and ice is in short supply (non-existent to be exact) but what this ‘icy’ water park lacks in authenticity it makes up for in creativity (think model penguins, Swiss-inspired chalets and model igloos). Thrill seekers are in luck because in addition to the world’s largest manmade waterfall (120ft tall) there are 37 slides to hurl yourself down. Plucky big kids can brave the 100 metre fall from the top of Mount Attack, while smaller ones will enjoy some kiddy time in Kid’s Cove, a dedicated toddler area with shallow water and mini slides. world under water Discover colourful fish and coral, interesting wrecks and unusual marine life while scuba diving in the warm waters of the UAE

Q Wo r d s b y Z o e R aw l i n s

Teeming with exotic fish and multi-coloured coral gardens, not to mention over a third of the world’s species of whales and dolphins, the UAE is a scuba diver’s paradise. Unlike other countries where most dive sites are seasonal, the waters here can be explored all year round thanks to temperatures ranging from a mild 22ºC in winter to a bath-like 30ºC in the height of summer. June, as luck would have it, is one of the prime months to delve into the deep as the fish are breeding, so there’s an abundance of aquatic life to explore. Diving in the UAE is split into two distinct geographical locations: the east coast, which includes the emirate of Fujairah (a world-renowned diving hub); and the west coast, comprising Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The east coast is generally considered to offer the best and most consistent year-round diving with rainbow-hued corals, tropical fish, good visibility and thrilling underwater cave and rock formations. The west coast meanwhile is home to some fascinating wreck dives for the more experienced diver, not to mention the chance to see unusual marine life such as Dubai’s population of highly endangered dugongs. Whether you’re a seasoned diver seeking new adventures or a landlubber who needs some gentle persuasion to dip a toe in, the UAE offers a wealth of underwater marvels. Here, local diving experts reveal their favourite dive sites in and around the region, so get ready to take the plunge and explore a fascinating new world…

Dibba Rock Fujairah, east coast

The waters around Fujairah offer exhilarating diving for all levels. According to Marian Moore, owner of Freestyle Divers, one of the best sites is Dibba Rock. “This is a stunning coral reef covered in hard corals where you can see black-tip reef sharks, turtles, tropical fish (such as angel and parrot fish), seahorses, lobster, barracuda, jack fish, devil rays and even stingrays,” she says. Experience level: Maximum depth is 14 metres so it’s suitable for all levels of divers (and snorkellers – some of the best marine life can be seen at just five metres’ depth). Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 3.5 hours by road. What makes the site worth the trip: Clear waters and the incredible variety of marine life. While you’re there, why not dive at: Martini Rock, a nearby popular dive site that’s teeming with coral and reef fish, or Car Cemetery, an underwater gem of sunken cars, trucks and buses. 1 Musandam (previous page) 2&3 Fujairah 4 Green turtle

Jassim Abu Dhabi, west coast

Jumeira Beach Dubai, west coast

With approximately 300 kilometres of coastline, the UAE’s capital offers an abundance of diving opportunities. “Abu Dhabi is a hidden gem for diving, as there are plenty of hard corals, fish and wrecks,” reveals Kathleen Russell, PADI course director at Al Mahara Diving Center. One of the emirate’s top dive sites is Jassim. “This is an interesting wreck broken into three sections lying on its side,” she continues. “Expect to see large schools of barracuda as well as stingrays.” Experience level: Advanced and upwards. Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 1.5 hours by boat. What makes the site worth the trip: The challenge of navigating a wreck, plus it’s a convenient dive if you’re staying in Abu Dhabi. While you’re there, why not dive at: Saadiyat Reef, 45 minutes by boat from the coast of Saadiyat Island. Look out for hard corals, angelfish, nudibranches and hammour.

“Beach dives are good fun due to their simplicity and with the right conditions they can be fantastic for both day and night dives,” explains Tom Crabbe, a divemaster from Al Boom Diving. “Strolling down to the beach wearing your dive gear and then floating during the briefing, followed by a calm and relaxed dive helps those who are starting to learn,” he adds. Experience level: Perfect for beginners. Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 1.5 hours’ drive. What makes the site worth the trip: The ease of a beach dive in calm and shallow waters (as opposed to a traditional boat dive, where you begin by jumping from the boat). While you’re there, why not dive at: The aeroplane. A relatively new site, a large aeroplane was deliberately sunk in waters close to Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah. It’s one for the more experienced and intrepid divers.

Lima Rock Musandam, east coast The Musandam peninsula offers thrill-aminute diving thanks to fjords that squeeze water through narrow passages formed by the Hajar Mountains. Coral-encrusted drop-offs plunge to great depths while swift currents attract some of the world’s largest ocean dwellers. “Lima Rock in Musandam is a coral reef with an abundance of fish. The depth varies from 30 to 40 metres, but best of all there’s a good chance of seeing whale sharks,” reveals Moore from Freestyle Divers. Experience level: Advanced and upwards. Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 3.5 hours’ drive. What makes the site worth the trip: June is one of the best months to spot whale sharks. While you’re there: Discover remote dive sites on a dhow cruise (day trip or overnight) and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Hajar Mountains. It is perfect for adventurous scuba divers and snorkellers. Don’t forget: The Musandam is part of Oman so you’ll need to bring your passport to show at the border crossing.

Dubai Aquarium Think you’ve got what it takes to swim in a glass tank with some of the world’s most feared underwater predators? Then book a shark dive at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo in The Dubai Mall, where you’ll get close to over 70 different marine species, including 400 sharks. “It gives visitors the chance to have a perfect-visibility dive at any point in the year and allows them to see a wealth of marine life in one place,” explains Tom Crabbe from Al Boom. For the less intrepid, there’s the less fearsome option of cage snorkelling in the aquarium’s 10 million-litre tank. You’ll still be in close proximity to 33,000 aquatic creatures including tropical fish, eels, rays (and the sharks), but you only need to wear snorkelling gear rather than donning full scuba equipment. Cage snorkelling at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is for those aged seven and above. It costs AED225 per person and runs daily every 30 minutes from 12 to 3.30pm, then 4.30 to 8pm. Shark diving is for those aged 10 and above. The cost for a certified diver is AED625 with

Raising the bar Quench your thirst with an elegant flute of Champagne or a tastebudtickling cocktail in one of the city’s most lavish and luxurious bars

Q

Cavalli Club If you’re keen to mingle with Dubai’s ‘it’ crowd, the Cavalli Club is your first port of call. Chic and sophisticated, this club is arguably the city’s hippest hangout. The multi-faceted venue boasts a contemporary Italian restaurant, sushi bar, wine and Champagne bar, together with a trendy cocktail and cigar lounge, as well as boutique shop. Owned by fashion favourite Roberto Cavalli who, with his extravagant designs, belongs in Dubai more than any other designer on the planet, this stylish haunt is exactly as you’d expect – colourful and creative, with a multitude of zebra-print features. Bottom line: guests shouldn’t even think of stepping inside unless they’re preened to perfection and seriously style-savvy. Like the clientele, the drinks menu is hot to trot, with a selection of carefully crafted and wellexecuted drinks. Start the evening with a glass of fine wine before sampling the delectable cocktail and Champagne offerings, which include high-end snifters such as Dom Pérignon and Veuve Cliquot. Skyview Bar Suspended 200 metres above sea level on the 27th floor, this famous bar in the iconic Burj Al Arab offers stunning views and to-die-for drinks. Why not try a glass of Brut NV or Rosé 2005 from Louis Roederer, one of the world’s leading Champagnes? The Rosé, with its pale apricot and rose colour, is crisp and refreshing with subtle aromas of bread, honey and strawberries. As you would expect in a bar of this calibre, there is an extensive list of Champagnes by the bottle too, ranging from the decadently sublime to the downright outrageous – what you spend is up to you. The 1996 Krug Blanc du Blancs Clos Du Mesnil, for example, a renowned vintage, comes in at AED17,000 (US$4,600) a pop. The 1993 Cuvée Dom Pérignon Oenotheque is also available at this high-end bar, which is ideal for pre- and post-dinner drinks. Location: Burj Al Arab / Open: Nightly from 7pm to 2am Contact: 04 3017600

Cin Cin Despite a swath of hot new nightclubs opening up around the emirate, this swish avant-garde establishment with a low-lit bar and a well-heeled clientele, is still a firm favourite. In addition to the cocktail menu, which boasts a delicious selection of signature concoctions, the Champagne selection also happens to be one of the best in the city. Moët & Chandon, Veuve Cliquot and Dom Pérignon are all served by the glass. Meanwhile, connoisseurs with money to spend might like to try a bottle of Laurent Perrier Rosé NNV or the 1998 Dom Pérignon Rosé Vintage. Perhaps the finest Champagne on the menu, however, is the 2002 Louis Roederer Cristal Vintage. Although a bottle will set you back AED7,500, (US$2,000) anyone with a passion for bubbly will appreciate the silky, creamy texture and nutty core with passion fruit and honeysuckle nuances. Cin Cin also offers an impressive wine selection showcasing over 250 international labels and 30 wines by the glass so if you just want to drop in for a pre-dinner drink, you’re sorted. This chic bar is blessed with spectacular views across Dubai Marina and the Arabian Gulf and is a mustvisit for anyone with a taste for Champagne and a head for heights Bar 44 Perched on the 44th floor of Grosvenor House, Dubai is Bar 44. This chic bar is blessed with spectacular views across Dubai Marina and the Arabian Gulf and is a must-visit for anyone with a taste for Champagne and a head for heights. However, while the views are stunning, it is not just the floor-to-ceiling windows which give way to spectacular sights across the city that makes Bar 44 a hotspot. With 52 varieties of Champagne and a list that includes bottles from all over the Champagne region in Northern France, this is where to come if you want an extensive selection of bubbles, served by the glass, bottle, magnum, jeroboam and the granddaddy of them all, the Nebuchadnezzar (which is the equivalent to 20 regular bottles). Mirrors make striking cocktail tables and wall features, while cream leather armchairs lend the feel of a private members’ club. Once you’ve taken in the sleek ambience and selected your favourite fizz, nestle into one of the cosy nooks in the lounge area and enjoy cool jazz sets from the live musicians who play nightly. Alegra Returning visitors will be pleased to see that Dubai’s ever-expanding bar portfolio has a new arrival. Alegra, at Al Murooj Rotana, opened its doors earlier this year and the Spanish-themed cocktail bar is quickly becoming one of the city’s ‘it’ venues. Cocktail fans are in luck because the drinks menu has 11 signature combinations. The Passion Fruit Lover, a flavoursome mixture of rum, passion fruit, coconut and orange comes highly recommended from the bar staff, as does the Red Carpet, which blends Campari with Champagne, grape juice and grapefruit. While the cocktails are enough to win you over, it would be wise to explore the menu fully. In addition to an impressive selection of Champagnes such as Dom Pérignon and Crystal, there is also a variety of fine wines and premium spirits to choose from. Non-alcoholic drinks are listed on the mocktail menu, which includes refreshing concoctions such as the Honeymoon, a sweet mixture of honey, banana, milk and peach purée, and the Tropical Sunset, which blends lychee, rambutan, coconut milk, apple juice and grenadine syrup. Location: Al Murooj Rotana Open: Sun to Fri from 7pm to 3am / Contact: 04 3073482

Alegra, at Al Murooj Rotana, opened its doors earlier this year and the Spanish-themed cocktail bar is quickly becoming one of the city’s ‘it’ venues 101 Dining Lounge & Bar Otis Redding sang about ‘sittin’ on the dock of the bay’ and after an evening spent at super-chic beachside hangout, 101 Dining Lounge & Bar, you’ll appreciate his sentiments. Set at the end of the hotel’s jetty, this St Tropez-style outdoor bar at the One&Only The Palm, Dubai, is one of Dubai’s hippest drinking spots. 101 prides itself on having a cosy yet stylish feel. Chilled out music, twinkling candle lights and a liberal scattering of sofas, cushions and pouffes is all that’s needed to complement the stellar views of Palm Jumeirah. Naturally there are plenty of options on the drinks menu, with an array of signature cocktails. The 101 signature cosmopolitan gets the thumbs up, but don’t miss out on the extensive wine and Champagne selection. Located at the tip of the West Crescent of Palm Jumeirah, by car it takes a surprising amount of time to arrive at this secluded spot. Fortunately there’s also the option to arrive by boat from the One&Only Royal Mirage, which takes about 15 minutes from the Al Sufouh resort. Be sure to book ahead though, as you’ll require a booking number to board the yacht. Location: One&Only The Palm, Dubai Open: Nightly from 7 to 11pm / Contact: 04 4401010

ARTS & CRAFT SOUK

04 3418020

Dubai has long been associated with gold. The largest gold trading centre in the Middle East, the story began over a century ago when the emirate opened a modest marketplace by Dubai Creek. Following these humble beginnings, the souk grew to become one of the largest in the world. Today the souk has been modernised and while the haphazard shacks and oil lamps of yesteryear have been replaced by shiny shop faces and neon lights, this historic spot is still a tantalising introduction to the Arabian world. Simply put, no trip to Dubai is complete without a visit to the Gold Souk. However, bazaar shopping can be daunting, so before you stop by, find out the current price of gold from your concierge. This way you know you are not paying over the odds for your precious purchase. The Gold Souk is open seven days a week, but many vendors shut up shop from 1 to 4pm daily.

Located in Times Square shopping mall, this small market sells handcrafted jewellery, accessories and contemporary UAE art.

Struggling to find a tee time or looking for an alternative challenge? The UAE has other excellent courses to feed your need. The Abu Dhabi Golf Club (02 5588990) is managed by Troon Golf and located just ten minutes from the airport. This superb, 27-hole championship course has excellent facilities and a distinctive clubhouse shaped like a falcon. The course itself is pleasantly tough with many water hazards to negotiate. Also in the capital is the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club (02 5578000), designed by Gary Player and the Gulf’s only ocean course. Heading north, Tower Links (07 2278555) in Ras Al Khaimah is a tricky 18-hole course that meanders through a mangrove swamp and has the Hajar Mountains as a backdrop. The back nine holes are also floodlit, meaning you can make the most of your journey.

Go local Dubai is abundant with Arabic restaurants but for authentic Emirati cuisine we recommend the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. The centre offers a variety of programmes which can be experienced over a spread of traditional Emirati dishes. Local cuisine is uncomplicated and relies on meat, fish and rice, enhanced by the creative use of spices and other aromatic flavourings. Traditional dishes include ouzi, which is a whole roast lamb stuffed with fragrant rice, and balaleet – a fine egg pasta with onion.

Although the UAE is a Muslim country, alcohol is permitted in several emirates including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Wine, Champagne and spirits are available from most five-star hotels and as a tourist you are free to enjoy the lively bar scene that Dubai has become famous for. However, be warned, there is zero tolerance to drink driving. One sip is one sip too many. Likewise being drunk in public is a criminal offence. Both crimes are treated seriously and are punishable with a fine and in more extreme cases imprisonment.

Your five-star concierge is now available online at www.conciergedubai.com Find everything you need to book and plan your next stay.

SMOKE SIGNALS Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Dubai. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. The most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling 50 cigarettes. However, if you’re after an authentic experience, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply and to share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.

{

my dubai Professional pianist Malika Omar shares her thoughts on how to have a harmonious stay in the emirate

}

1

I moved to Dubai from Cape Town just over four years ago and I am currently working as the resident pianist at Al Fayrooz Lounge at Al Qasr, Madinat Jumeirah. Working hard to realise my goals means I sometimes don’t have time for other things, but when I do have a break in my schedule I like meandering through the souks in old Dubai. It’s so refreshing to chat to the vendors and see all the colourful fabrics, trinkets and spices on display. In fact, the title track of my album Sand Star is inspired by the city because I’ve always thought of Dubai as a modern fairytale kingdom. Dubai is wonderful all year round, but my favourite time is December because the air is crisp and everyone is in a festive mood. Three months later in March the Dubai World Cup horse racing takes place. This is a spectacular occasion and I had the opportunity to perform at this year’s

1 Souks, Bur Dubai 2 Madinat Jumeirah

Working hard to realise my goals means I sometimes don’t have time for other things, but when I do have a break I like meandering through the souks

event. I love the fashion and being part of the excitement of the day. As anyone familiar with Dubai knows, the city is abundant with amazing restaurants. My favourite haunts include Ashas, which is an upmarket Indian restaurant at Wafi Pyramids. The butter chicken is the best in the city. For something a bit more casual I’d head to Social House at The Dubai Mall. I could nibble on the chicken satays all day. When it comes to nightlife, I’m a big fan of Hakkasan at Jumeirah Emirates Towers. It serves a tasty non-alcoholic cocktail called the Kowloon Cooler. For a bit of relaxation, I love the tranquility of JBR beach in the mornings. If the weather is good I like to go

for a leisurely walk along the shore and enjoy watching the yachts as they sail by. When I have friends in town there’s nothing more exciting than a trip to At the Top, which is on the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa. You’ll literally feel on top of the world. For something fivestar, look no further than a visit to Al Qasr, Madinat Jumeirah. The resort reminds me of a floating palace and there is a variety of outdoor bars and restaurants where you can sit down and take in the view. Dubai is very much a shopping city and my favourite retail spot is The Dubai Mall. I love losing myself among all the stores and while there are more than 1,000 shops it never feels overwhelming.
