Dubai is abundant with jaw-dropping views and I always recommend guests visit either At the Top, which is the observation deck on the 124th of the Burj Khalifa, or Skyview Bar in the Burj Al Arab, which offers amazing views of the Arabian Gulf. A lot of visitors come here to shop, but with so many malls to choose from knowing where to start can be tricky. First up is The Dubai Mall, the biggest shopping centre in the world with over 1,000 stores. Another top retail spot is BurJuman which is located in Bur Dubai and is home to Saks Fifth Avenue. Ibn Battuta Mall, with its unique design and built to celebrate the travels of the famous Arabic explorer Ibn Battuta, also has a wide variety of stores to explore. Dubai is a city that comes to life at night and many of our guests ask which bars and clubs they should visit. Trilogy at Madinat Jumeirah is known for its cool club sounds and is always a big hit. For a glamorous hangout, Cavalli Club at The Fairmont Dubai ticks all the boxes. Alternatively the guests may be looking for something romantic, in which case I would recommend Nassimi Beach at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai for sundowners by the sea. Alternatively dinner aboard river restaurant Bateaux Dubai gives visitors the opportunity to take in the idyllic views of ‘old Dubai’ as they sail down Dubai Creek by moonlight. In addition to the glitz and glamour, there is also a historic side to the emirate. I recommend guests take time to visit the Bastakiya quarter, which is Dubai’s old district. Another must-visit is the Shiekh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. This non-profit organisation, based in the Bastakiya quarter, is dedicated to offering unique activities, such as cultural breakfasts and historic tours. I also recommend a visit to Jumeirah Mosque, one of only a few mosques in Dubai open to the public.
A trip out of the city into the Arabian Desert is an awe-inspiring adventure. The unspoilt dunes can be reached within an hour, with tour operators providing pickups from Dubai’s hotels. Those looking for excitement can taste the thrill of desert driving, while a trip to a traditional desert camp provides a more sedate experience. Turn to page 84 for a list of tour operators.

Shisha
The intoxicating aroma of shisha smoke wafting through the air is a common one in Dubai, as the sociable pursuit of shisha smoking has become part of the rich culture of the Middle East. Derived from the Persian word shishe meaning ‘glass’, the pipe consists of a bowl at the top of the pipe, which is packed with flavoured tobacco and covered with a piece of pierced foil. This pastime sees groups of friends meet and share f lavours such as vanilla, apple, grape, strawberry, raspberry and mint. Location: Served at most hotels and at many cafés throughout the city. Eid al Fitr August 19 to 22 To mark the end of Ramadan the three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr (the Festival of FastBreaking) commences on August 19. On the day of Eid, Muslims gather early in the morning to perform the Eid prayer.

Snapshot Winds of change While the vast expansion of the last four decades has seen Dubai transformed from a seaside fishing village to a paradigm of modern architectural excellence, the old-world charm of the Bastakiya quarter is steadfast. From Prada to Pucci, Stella McCartney to Stella Luna, you name it, Dubai’s got it and recent studies show that the emirate has overtaken established markets such as New York, Hong Kong and Paris when it comes to availability of luxury labels. While Dubai boasts year-round appeal for those in the pursuit of retail pleasures, June is a particularly popular month because it signals the start of Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) – the region’s biggest entertainment and shopping fiesta. Launched back in 1998, the retail extravaganza is now in its 15th year and has beckoned more than 22 million visitors from across the globe since its inception. “In addition to major discounts, shoppers can look forward to millions of dirhams in giveaways, raffles and free family entertainment while they browse the malls,” explains HE Laila Mohd Suhail, CEO of Dubai Events and Promotions Establishments.

Retail detail While DSS offers a multitude of attractions, including fashion shows, dancers, acrobats and even the chance to walk away with cash or a car, the obvious draw is the shopping. “DSS is the perfect time for savvy shoppers to indulge in a spot of retail therapy and update their wardrobes as there is always a variety of bargains to be had,” says personal shopper Christina Karachaliou (omyglamour.com). “This season, look out for vibrant colours such as bright oranges, warm yellows, nautical blues and rosy reds, which are all making a big impact in the spring/
summer collections.” Christina also recommends taking the opportunity to acquire a few key fashion items which will carry you through to next summer. “Ladies should look out for staple pieces such as shift and maxi dresses, which hold their style. Tropical-coloured jumpsuits and pleated maxi skirts are all on trend. Men should stock up on wardrobe classics such as tailored suits and woven-silk ties. A classic pair of black leather shoes is always a wise investment as shoes are the first thing people see when you walk into the room.” So with 70 of the city’s malls taking part in the month-long festival, which

Culture club While shopping and entertainment take centre stage, DSS also hosts the Min Bladi Al Emarat event at the Star Atrium in The Dubai Mall displaying various aspects of Emirati culture. LEGACY OF the DHOW For centuries the wooden dhow has sailed the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf and still provides an essential mode of transport in the UAE today

With its billowing sails reflected in the design of architectural wonders such as the Burj Al Arab and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, the graceful Arabian dhow and its billowing sails is a cultural symbol of the UAE. While the majestic vessel has become an emblem of nostalgia for days gone by, the history of these boats is humble and rooted in the modest beginnings of the emirate. To look at modern-day Dubai, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to imagine that just over 100 years ago the emirate was little more than a sleepy fishing village with a f ledgling economy kept buoyant by pearl diving and trading. Dubai Creek, with its direct route to the sea, facilitated trade and transport and as a result communities settled around the sandbanks and made a living from the water. Dhow boats sailed as far as East Africa and India to sell their wares, providing an essential source of revenue to the city. Without motors or mod cons, the humble crafts were powered by the wind and skilled navigators looked to the stars for guidance to point them in the right direction. Of course, to look at the simple structure of a classic dhow itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to believe that these vintage vessels made it across the high seas. Yet while the journeys were fraught with danger, successful crews often returned home with profits from bartering their goods.

Modest creations With modern technological advances it seems hard to believe that dhow-building skills were passed down through the generations by word of mouth and dhows were built without drawings, plans or templates. The measurements and designs were known only to the boat makers. Using natural resources, the dhow was originally created from teak, by an extremely labour-intensive process where logs were sawn, chiselled and drilled by hand before being assembled. The huge, white triangular sails called lateens were traditionally stitched together from sheets of white cotton and facilitated smooth sailing as they billowed in the wind, pulling the
boats quickly through the water. Thousands of men journeyed out on the boats during the summer months, some seeking their fortune and others just hoping to make enough money to last them until the following pearl-diving season. Divers would leap overboard and spend up to two minutes as far as 40 metres below the surface, searching the sea floor for oysters and wrenching them from the rocks. Back onboard all oysters were opened by the captain after sunset, when the white lateen sails glowed orange from the fires on board. Much like any fishing crews today, each member would take home a salary based on the value of the catch, or in this case pearls retrieved.

While the job was hazardous and claimed lives, it paid well. Initially the UAE subsisted on a barter economy, but pearl diving cultivated profits that enabled steady growth. The once nomadic population made permanent settlements around trading ports. Tribes formed dhow-ownership cooperatives, paying for the dhows’ upkeep and then splitting profits. Yet the worldwide economic depression in the 1930s, combined with the Japanese discovery of the cultured pearl, heralded the end of pearling in the Gulf. When oil was discovered in the 1950s, it further transformed the economy providing new opportunities for local people.

To sample the hustle and bustle of dhow traders first hand, head down to the Dubai wharfage – located in Deira, opposite the Hilton Dubai Creek hotel. Watch the traders as they load up their heavy cargo en route to destinations around the subcontinent and Africa. Despite their heavy workload, the traders are welcoming to visitors
Ancient sailing traditions have not been forgot ten, however. T hese beguiling vessels still have a purpose. Salah Bin Toak is the owner of Bin Toak Yachts and his family have been living in the region for more than 120 years. He regularly builds dhows for customers. “A 1,500-tonne dhow can take as long as three years to build and costs in the region of AED5 million,” explains Toak. “We have customers from a l l around the region who want dhows for different purposes. It could be for cargo, fishing or diving purposes and we build on request.” In addition to commercial dhows, purpose-built racing dhows take to the water for the annual traditional dhow racing season from September to May. Not only is this a keenly observed sporting event, it is also a celebration of the country’s fascinating culture and heritage. Similarly, t he wooden boats st ill dominate Dubai Creek as they line up along the banks. Some operate as restaurants while others can be seen at the Dhow Wharfage in Deira docked and ready to be loaded with goods. Whatever the purpose, the image of the dhow resonates in many things – architecture, songs, stamps, money and crests – and will forever be ingrained within the history of the United Arab Emirates.

Q As June temperatures rise throughout the region, even dedicated sun worshippers will be seeking solace from the heat. The good news is that the UAE is well equipped to take the barometer to below zero, so if you’re keen to chill out, do it in style with our round-up of the coolest venues. A top spot is Ski Dubai, the Middle East’s first indoor ski resort. In addition to 22,500 square metres of real snow in the desert, this unique spot has jumps, toboggans and an après ski café that serves piping hot chocolate. For something a little less energetic, cool customers should direct their attentions to Chillout (pictured), the region’s only ice bar. Iceland Waterpark Cleverly tailored to provide tots, tweens and teens with a wide variety of wintry water activities, Iceland Waterpark is a novel way to keep cool during the hot period. Admittedly, real snow and ice is in short supply (non-existent to be exact) but what this ‘icy’ water park lacks in authenticity it makes up for in creativity (think model penguins, Swiss-inspired chalets and model igloos). Thrill seekers are in luck because in addition to the world’s largest manmade waterfall (120ft tall) there are 37 slides to hurl yourself down. Teeming with exotic fish and multi-coloured coral gardens, not to mention over a third of the world’s species of whales and dolphins, the UAE is a scuba diver’s paradise. Unlike other countries where most dive sites are seasonal, the waters here can be explored all year round thanks to temperatures ranging from a mild 22ºC in winter to a bath-like 30ºC in the height of summer. June, as luck would have it, is one of the prime months to delve into the deep as the fish are breeding, so there’s an abundance of aquatic life to explore. Diving in the UAE is split into two distinct geographical locations: the east coast, which includes the emirate of Fujairah (a world-renowned diving hub); and the west coast, comprising Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The east coast is generally considered to offer the best and most consistent year-round diving with rainbow-hued corals, tropical fish, good visibility and thrilling underwater cave and rock formations. The west coast meanwhile is home to some fascinating wreck dives for the more experienced diver, not to mention the chance to see unusual marine life such as Dubai’s population of highly endangered dugongs. Whether you’re a seasoned diver seeking new adventures or a landlubber who needs some gentle persuasion to dip a toe in, the UAE offers a wealth of underwater marvels. The waters around Fujairah offer exhilarating diving for all levels. According to Marian Moore, owner of Freestyle Divers, one of the best sites is Dibba Rock. “This is a stunning coral reef covered in hard corals where you can see black-tip reef sharks, turtles, tropical fish (such as angel and parrot fish), seahorses, lobster, barracuda, jack fish, devil rays and even stingrays,” she says. Experience level: Maximum depth is 14 metres so it’s suitable for all levels of divers (and snorkellers – some of the best marine life can be seen at just five metres’ depth). Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 3.5 hours by road. What makes the site worth the trip: Clear waters and the incredible variety of marine life. With approximately 300 kilometres of coastline, the UAE’s capital offers an abundance of diving opportunities. “Abu Dhabi is a hidden gem for diving, as there are plenty of hard corals, fish and wrecks,” reveals Kathleen Russell, PADI course director at Al Mahara Diving Center. One of the emirate’s top dive sites is Jassim. “This is an interesting wreck broken into three sections lying on its side,” she continues. “Expect to see large schools of barracuda as well as stingrays.” Experience level: Advanced and upwards. Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 1.5 hours by boat. What makes the site worth the trip: The challenge of navigating a wreck, plus it’s a convenient dive if you’re staying in Abu Dhabi. While you’re there, why not dive at: Saadiyat Reef, 45 minutes by boat from the coast of Saadiyat Island. Look out for hard corals, angelfish, nudibranches and hammour.
“Beach dives are good fun due to their simplicity and with the right conditions they can be fantastic for both day and night dives,” explains Tom Crabbe, a divemaster from Al Boom Diving. “Strolling down to the beach wearing your dive gear and then floating during the briefing, followed by a calm and relaxed dive helps those who are starting to learn,” he adds. Experience level: Perfect for beginners. Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 1.5 hours’ drive. What makes the site worth the trip: The ease of a beach dive in calm and shallow waters (as opposed to a traditional boat dive, where you begin by jumping from the boat). While you’re there, why not dive at: The aeroplane. A relatively new site, a large aeroplane was deliberately sunk in waters close to Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah. It’s one for the more experienced and intrepid divers.

Lima Rock Musandam, east coast The Musandam peninsula offers thrill-aminute diving thanks to fjords that squeeze water through narrow passages formed by the Hajar Mountains. Coral-encrusted drop-offs plunge to great depths while swift currents attract some of the world’s largest ocean dwellers. “Lima Rock in Musandam is a coral reef with an abundance of fish. The depth varies from 30 to 40 metres, but best of all there’s a good chance of seeing whale sharks,” reveals Moore from Freestyle Divers. Experience level: Advanced and upwards. Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 3.5 hours’ drive. What makes the site worth the trip: June is one of the best months to spot whale sharks. While you’re there: Discover remote dive sites on a dhow cruise (day trip or overnight) and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Hajar Mountains. It is perfect for adventurous scuba divers and snorkellers. Don’t forget: The Musandam is part of Oman so you’ll need to bring your passport to show at the border crossing.
Dubai Aquarium Think you’ve got what it takes to swim in a glass tank with some of the world’s most feared underwater predators? Then book a shark dive at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo in The Dubai Mall, where you’ll get close to over 70 different marine species, including 400 sharks. “It gives visitors the chance to have a perfect-visibility dive at any point in the year and allows them to see a wealth of marine life in one place,” explains Tom Crabbe from Al Boom. For the less intrepid, there’s the less fearsome option of cage snorkelling in the aquarium’s 10 million-litre tank. You’ll still be in close proximity to 33,000 aquatic creatures including tropical fish, eels, rays (and the sharks), but you only need to wear snorkelling gear rather than donning full scuba equipment. Cage snorkelling at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is for those aged seven and above. It costs AED225 per person and runs daily every 30 minutes from 12 to 3.30pm, then 4.30 to 8pm. Shark diving is for those aged 10 and above. The cost for a certified diver is AED625 with

Following these humble beginnings, the souk grew to become one of the largest in the world. Today the souk has been modernised and while the haphazard shacks and oil lamps of yesteryear have been replaced by shiny shop faces and neon lights, this historic spot is still a tantalising introduction to the Arabian world. Simply put, no trip to Dubai is complete without a visit to the Gold Souk. However, bazaar shopping can be daunting, so before you stop by, find out the current price of gold from your concierge. This way you know you are not paying over the odds for your precious purchase. The Gold Souk is open seven days a week, but many vendors shut up shop from 1 to 4pm daily.

Prior to this, the seven emirates had lived in relative harmony, united through a protectorate treaty with Great Britain, which earned them the name the Trucial States. It was a successful partnership, but in 1968 the United Kingdom ended the treaty. I moved to Dubai from Cape Town just over four years ago and I am currently working as the resident pianist at Al Fayrooz Lounge at Al Qasr, Madinat Jumeirah. Working hard to realise my goals means I sometimes don’t have time for other things, but when I do have a break in my schedule I like meandering through the souks in old Dubai. It’s so refreshing to chat to the vendors and see all the colourful fabrics, trinkets and spices on display. In fact, the title track of my album Sand Star is inspired by the city because I’ve always thought of Dubai as a modern fairytale kingdom. Dubai is wonderful all year round, but my favourite time is December because the air is crisp and everyone is in a festive mood. Three months later in March the Dubai World Cup horse racing takes place. This is a spectacular occasion and I had the opportunity to perform at this year’s

event. I love the fashion and being part of the excitement of the day. As anyone familiar with Dubai knows, the city is abundant with amazing restaurants. My favourite haunts include Ashas, which is an upmarket Indian restaurant at Wafi Pyramids. The butter chicken is the best in the city. For something a bit more casual I’d head to Social House at The Dubai Mall. I could nibble on the chicken satays all day. When it comes to nightlife, I’m a big fan of Hakkasan at Jumeirah Emirates Towers. It serves a tasty non-alcoholic cocktail called the Kowloon Cooler. For a bit of relaxation, I love the tranquility of JBR beach in the mornings. If the weather is good I like to go
for a leisurely walk along the shore and enjoy watching the yachts as they sail by. When I have friends in town there’s nothing more exciting than a trip to At the Top, which is on the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa. You’ll literally feel on top of the world. For something fivestar, look no further than a visit to Al Qasr, Madinat Jumeirah. The resort reminds me of a floating palace and there is a variety of outdoor bars and restaurants where you can sit down and take in the view. Dubai is very much a shopping city and my favourite retail spot is The Dubai Mall. I love losing myself among all the stores and while there are more than 1,000 shops it never feels overwhelming.
