Those looking for a fun introduction into heritage-based activities should make their way to the eighth Liwa Date Festival, which hosts a popular fruit beauty pageant. The Ratab Beauty Competition invites locals to display highly sought-after half-ripe dates in the hope of being crowned ‘best in show’ and there are also contests for ‘best mangos’ and ‘best lemons’. Abu Dhabi is a destination rich in culture and heritage. Take a trip downtown to Al Hosn Palace (the White Palace). As a former residence of Dubai’s royal family, the centre now houses an impressive collection of documents on the heritage and on the history of Dubai and the Gulf. A guided tour of the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is also a must. During Ramadan, the mosque will be open to visitors between 9am and noon and closed on Fridays. For an alternative photo opportunity, guests staying at the Shangri-La Hotel can enjoy exquisite views over Maqta Creek from the hotel’s private beach and infinity pool. Experience a traditional market atmosphere at Souk Qaryat Al Beri, where you can purchase authentic Arabic perfumes, clothes and souvenirs. Crossing the Empty Quarter UAE-based adventurer Adrian Hayes has crossed the north and south poles, scaled Mount Everest and created world records along the way. His latest journey follows in the footsteps of the late great explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger, who twice crossed the Rub Al Khali

Q The Rub Al Khali, or the Empty Quarter as it is known in English, is one of the harshest places on the planet. With towering sand dunes that shift in the wind, temperatures that soar during the day and plummet at night and very few inhabitants, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the easiest of regions to cross on foot. Yet that is exactly what Dubai-based adventurer Adrian Hayes did. Armed with seven camels, two Emirati companions and some Omani guides, Hayes set off in the footsteps of famed explorer and travel writer Sir Wilfred Thesiger, who twice crossed the Rub Al Khali between 1945 and 1949. Thesiger was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1910. He was educated at Eton and Oxford in the UK and returned to Ethiopia in 1930. He completed a number of expeditions in Africa and served in the army there during World War II. He explored the southern regions of the Arabian Peninsula from 1945 and travelled to Iraq, Iran (known as Persia at that time), Kurdistan, French West Africa, Pakistan and Kenya. He is well-known for his two travel books, Arabian Sands and The Marsh Arabs. The former, which was published in 1959, documents his travels through the Rub Al Khali and describes the disappearing Bedouin way of life. What made you decide to do this journey?

I was seconded to the Royal Army of Oman from 1991 to 1993 and that was when I first heard of Wilfred Thesiger and saw his books. It was one of those dreams, along with climbing Everest and walking the [north and south] poles. I have lived in the region for the past five years and for me, it was a no-brainer. I know the region, I speak Arabic reasonably well and it was one of the great adventures I wanted to do. It took two years of full-time planning. When Thesiger made the journey, his challengers were a few bandits and smugglers, those kinds of things. The challenges now are borders – which you need permission to cross – authorities... all of these things. Our journey wasn’t a re-creation, because you can’t re-create what was done in 1947, but we wanted to follow in the footsteps of Thesiger in his first crossing of the Empty Quarter. That was our main aim – to experience it and see what it’s like now compared to 1947.

What has changed since then?

In 1947 there was much more grassland and grazing. That’s now gone. We saw a lot of deserted farms. The water that fed these has disappeared, dried out or become too salty. The water’s not there, so the grazing is not there. The Bedu are no longer nomads roaming the deserts with their camels. They still have their camels and they still farm them in the desert areas, but they’re not roaming. They’re living in houses. In some ways the desert is emptier than it was in 1947, but on the other hand you have tracks, you’ve got roads and you’ve got four-wheel drives.

Tell us about the journey We went from Salalah to Abu Dhabi, which was 1,600 kilometres and took 44 days. We skirted the Saudi border, but stayed in the UAE. We went to a place called Umm Zamoul where the borders of Saudi Arabia and Oman meet and from there we continued to Abu Dhabi, passing through Liwa and Al Ain. Salalah to Liwa was pretty much what Thesiger did, except we stayed inside Oman. Thesiger also went to Al Ain just as we did, but after that he went all the way back down, while we continued on to Abu Dhabi. The first phase of the journey from Salalah to Mughshin was quite incredible.

It was across the Dofar mountains in Salalah. It’s the only place on the Arabian Peninsula that gets a monsoon, so it’s green. We were hacking through impenetrable jungle bush and forest. Then after 30 kilometres it becomes a wadi landscape with dried up wadis and lots of rock climbs for a few hundred kilometres. After that you’re in the sands of the desert. In the first phase, word spread about our journey so people would gather to meet us and there would be a big celebration. Goats were slaughtered, there was dancing, poetry, speeches… it just got bigger and bigger.

In t he second phase, in t he middle of nowhere from Mughshin to the UAE border, one sheikh drove 200 kilometres to be with us. Another highlight was riding into Abu Dhabi on our camels on the final day with four police car escorts, stopping at traffic lights with cars next to us. It was a surreal and fantastic way to finish. Our journey was touching to this part of the world. Some people did this in the ’90s, but they were three Canadians with a whole army of people. They were outsiders. What made this different was that we were one Brit, two Emiratis and some Omani riders. It was the same composition as Thesiger’s group. I was given the name Abu Ali over a year ago. It means father of Ali and was given to me by one of the Omani sheikhs. This was one of the most rewarding parts. Knowing the language and speaking it – and it improved greatly throughout – I was accepted and I could get in touch. I dressed i n t he t rad it iona l clot hes a nd wore t he khanjar (Omani dagger). I took it seriously.

Tell us more about the team There was myself and two others, Saeed Rashed Al Mesafry and Ghafan Mohammed Al Jabry. They are Bedouin, army officers and camel farmers which is why I selected them. We chose people who wanted to do the journey because it is part of their heritage and culture. They loved camels too, so it worked. They’d been taught at school about Sir Wilfred Thesiger, or Mubarak bin London as he was called. It was all part of their history. He’s an iconic figure here, in the whole Middle East. Thesiger is so well-known and so respected and I think what surprised me when we went to Salalah through the wadis and the villages in Oman is how much respect he was afforded and how much we were too. We were modern-day heroes. I think in the cities in the Emirates, a lot of the culture has been lost, but the culture and heritage is alive and well when you get out of the cities. This trip was a reminder and reinforcement of where they’ve come from – Bedouin heritage, their hospitality, kindness, generosity, the camel heritage and where they’ve come from in a short period of time.

Did you ever meet Thesiger? I saw him once when he gave a speech, but I didn’t get the chance to chat with him. I did meet his two companions, Salim bin Kabina and Salim bin Ghabaisha of the Al Kathiri tribe. This was a major tribe in parts of the Empty Quarter. They were housed by Sheikh Zayed after they finished their expedition and live in Abu Dhabi, but they’re Omani.

What did you learn along the way?

The thing I learnt most was about the culture and heritage. There is a huge Bedouin culture which so many visitors don’t get the chance to see. I’ve lived in the Emirates a long time and I’ve never been immersed in the culture so much as I was on this 44-day trip. I’ve never experienced anything like it. When you get in touch, you realise how rewarding and special it is. So that’s what I learned. The power of nature, the desert always wins. I was mesmerised. You wonder what’s beyond the big sand dunes and that’s part of any adventurer’s spirit. What’s beyond the next mountain, next sand dune, the next ridge…

the rituals of Ramadan Ramadan is a rewarding, spiritual time in which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset and practise great self-control. With the Holy Month spanning much of July and August this year, what better time to explore its fascinating intricacies?

Q Ramadan is the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic calendar, the month in which Muslims believe that Allah chose to reveal the Qurâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;an to the Prophet Muhammad. For Muslims, Ramadan, which this year is expected to start on July 20 with the sighting of the new moon, is a deeply spiritual time of year that marks a personal journey in which they seek to become closer to God. Muslims increase faith during Ramadan through the act of fasting, abstaining from eating and drinking between sunrise and sunset. They also recite the Muslim profession of faith, perform ritual prayers five times a day and donate time, food and money to charitable causes. With the aim of pleasing the Almighty by helping others, controlling emotions such as anger, lust and envy and refraining from gossip and physical intimacy, the soul is cleansed.

A social experience To those unfamiliar with Islam, Ramadan has its own distinctive ambience and while daily life continues, there are subtle differences that every visitor will experience. Working hours are curtailed and shops may close for prayer times, so be aware of the slower pace of life and adjusted hours of operation. Also, to be respectful to those observing the rituals of the season, nonMuslims are expected to refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day and to dress modestly. Ramadan is a social season and everyone, not just followers of Islam, can get involved in Ramadan-related activities. The end of Ramadan is marked by a three-day holiday called Eid Al Fitr (expected to fall on August 19), which begins with the sighting of the new moon. The first day of Eid is spent with family, although traditionally the senior member of the household will pay courtesy visits to prominent elders or local sheikhs to wish them Eid Mubarak (a blessed Eid).

Learning about Islam For those with a limited knowledge of Islam, a guided tour around Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an excellent way to find out more about the faith. The largest mosque in the UAE and a must-see on any trip to the capital, the building and the interior is breathtaking. More than 3,000 workers helped to construct the mosque using natural materials such as marble, stone, gold, semiprecious stones, crystals and ceramics. From rasul mud treatments to hammam baths and desert sand scrubs to caviar facials, Abu Dhabi has signature spa rituals all of its own. Blending authentic Arabian therapies with luxurious, indulgent treatments, the capital’s spas are a haven for visitors to rest, relax and revive. Staying true to tradition, many spas offer age-old Arabian therapies, including hammam and rasul treatments. The hammam was originally a wash house (still largely enjoyed in countries such as Turkey and Morocco), where people would go for their regular baths. They would be scrubbed down with an exfoliating mitt and washed with black soap. Their hair would be shampooed and then they would be free to splash themselves with water of varying temperatures or soak in hot tubs. While Abu Dhabi’s hammams cannot lay claim to hundreds of years of history, what sets them apart is their sheer luxury and the fact that they are a great introduction to the city’s spa culture. Similarly, the rasul treatment is another Arabian experience worth trying. Guests are covered in various types of therapeutic mud and left to relax for 30 minutes in a steamy rasul chamber before water rains down from the ceiling to wash them clean. Those who are looking for something extraordinary will be very well catered for in the capital where many spas offer luxurious treatments incorporating gold, caviar and precious stones. When visiting spas, try to arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes early and bring your swimwear to enjoy the facilities, which often include a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi and relaxation areas. The premium feature, however, is the Moroccan-style hammam with marble beds, Jacuzzis and steam rooms. There is also an ‘ice cave’ for the ultimate invigorating experience. The fashion scene in the UAE has captured the imagination of style mavens around the world due to its unique blend of traditional dress and high-end international brands. Local women are renowned for teaming their abayas with the latest Christian Louboutin heels and Louis Vuitton handbags, while the melting pot of other cultures and nationalities who reside here inspire a diverse range of trends. This, added to the success of home-grown events such as fashion weeks for both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, is helping to inspire a new generation of designers eager to put a stamp on the international fashion scene. Concierge asks a selection of the emirateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s high-profile creatives to share their inspirations and future goalsâ&#x20AC;Ś

The haute couturier One of the UAE’s most celebrated designers, Furne One, owner of Amato Haute Couture, takes a bespoke approach to fashion by producing extravagant hand-stitched designs that are a hit with the international elite. Hailing from the Philippines, Furne, who is based in Dubai, has won fans from around the world with his extravagant and artistic designs and carved an enviable path to success. “When I was little I would spend hours marvelling at both my mother’s and grandmother’s wardrobes. As I got older I realised that if I was ever going to be somebody when I grew up it would have to be a fashion designer. I started out by working for other designers and established labels, but my first real break came when I won MEGA magazine’s ‘Young Designer of the Philippines’ in 1994 and then completed my apprenticeship with designer Josie Natori,” says Furne. The talented designer opened his first boutique, Amato, in Dubai in 2002 producing hand-stitched designs for an elite clientele. “Women in the Middle East are very fashionable. In terms of glamour and style they are highly evolved, totally interesting and very much haute couture. An Amato woman is someone who knows what she

wants. She isn’t afraid to express herself and she isn’t bound by conventional restraints. Most of all she is someone who loves herself and celebrates the power of her femininity,” says Furne. In 2008 the designer’s imaginative creations caught the eye of the European fashion elite working on reality television show Germany’s Next Top Model and he was invited to be a special guest designer in the season finale alongside supermodel Heidi Klum. This helped propel Furne onto the international fashion scene and soon he was styling stars including Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez. His current collection is inspired by a famous Dutch dancer Mata Hari. “I draw inspiration from unlikely sources like music, cinema, cosmic mysticism, vintage and gothic images,” he says. With ambitious plans to expand, 2012 has been a busy year so far for Furne, having recently opened the brand’s first boutique in Los Angeles, US. The Hollywood hit

Marina Qureshi draws on her childhood in A l A in as inspiration for her elegant and feminine eveningwear, which is attracting the attention of Hollywood’s finest. She may only have graduated from the Middle East’s leading fashion design institution, ESMOD Dubai, just two years ago, but up-and-coming designer Marina has already achieved remarkable success in the fashion world. Growing up in Al Ain, the Asian-British designer says she dreamt of working in a creative environment from a young age. “I always wanted to do something related to the arts. I struggled to choose whether to pursue interiors or fashion, but eventually set my heart on fashion design when I was 15 and it was the best decision I’ve made,” she says. Graduat ing from ESMOD in 2010 wit h a degree in fashion design and pattern making, Marina’s final student collection was sponsored by international shoe brand Kurt Geiger – a huge accomplishment. While studying in the UA E, Marina nurtured her love for art, creativity and fashion and to this day she still gives thanks to the country that kick-started her career. “It would be very easy to criticise the Middle East fashion scene, but I embrace it for what it is: enthusiastic, bold and hungry for new designers. I have been overwhelmed by the support and openness from the region and I believe that you would be hardpressed to find this in another big city,” she says.

The golden girl Born and raised in Abu Dhabi, Dania Khan developed a love for the arts from a young age and is now considered one of the region’s most promising stars. An Iraqi designer who grew up in Abu Dhabi, Dania’s fashion inspiration falls close to home with her mother who she describes as a constant symbol of style and elegance. “From my early childhood it became obvious that my mind was all for the arts and fashion fascinated me,” she says. “My parents had a very good social life, in and out of the country. I would watch my mother, who had a naturally impeccable style and learn from her.” After studying Fashion Design and Marketing at the American University in London, Dania moved to Paris to further her studies at the Paris Fashion Institute, culminating with an internship at a Parisbased fashion house. Returning to the UAE with a wealth of experience under her belt, Dania produced her first collection in 2004 for private viewing, ‘Chic Afrique’. Hard work garnered her recognition and she went on to compete

in a fashion reality TV show in Lebanon, Mission Fashion, under the watchful eye of fashion legend Elie Saab. Soon after, Dania was seconded to work for the well-respected fashion house, Bugatti and thus began her career as a merited professional designer. “My brand is for elegant, sophisticated women, who embrace their femininity and who love and understand fashion and know how to express their feelings through what they wear,” she says. Over the course of a few years, Dania designed and worked on over 1,500 custommade couture pieces. One of her more recent collections, ‘A Crush on Colour’, is a glamorous eveningwear couture collection inspired by the ’50s. She says: “Each piece is quite simple yet has a distinctive detail. It has a very colourful palette, but with the summer season here I want women to feel fresh. PRECIOUS ASSETS Rubies, emeralds and sapphires are more than just dazzling – they could help savvy investors grow their wealth

In the current economic climate we have to innovate to accumulate. With this in mind, new avenues are emerging in the financial world where savvy investors are now looking to diversify from traditional investments, such as stocks, shares, bonds and funds to somewhat more attractive projects. While valuable artwork, property and precious metals have played a part in financial portfolios for a long time, more recently a growing number of speculators are looking towards coloured gemstones in order to grow their wealth. “While gemstones vary in value, dealers speculate that prices for high-quality stones are up by 50 percent and have doubled in the past two years,” says Ben Khadra, chairman of Levant Group, the main distributor of Leviev Jewellery. “Average-class stones are up by 20 to 25 percent in the last year and certain semi-precious stones are now priced as if they were precious.” With this in mind, some experts speculate that coloured stones are catching up with diamonds (which have not enjoyed the same price rises lately) in terms of status and value, with many shoppers opting to buy ruby, emerald and sapphireset pieces over diamond equivalents. According to Ivan Zakharchenko, Middle East ceo of Maximilian, the reason for the increase in value is mainly due to shortages. “Good quality coloured stones are hard to find at the best of times because the outfits digging for them tend to be tiny compared with the diamond giants. This, coupled with political instability, means that there is a shortage.” Zakharchenko is referring to limited exports from countries such as Madascagar and Myanmar (Burma), which have suffered political instability in recent years. “In 2008 America banned imports from then Junta-ruled Myanmar, a major source of rubies, while Madagascar has sapphire deposits which aren’t being utlised because of political issues.” The other reason can be attributed to culture, with fast-growing economies such as China and India purchasing valuable gemstones because of the religious significance they hold.

Choose wisely For this reason it’s not surprising that investors are now setting their sights on multi-coloured assets. However, investing in gemstones is complicated because stones vary hugely in quality. Difficulty also occurs because the colour is the dominant feature of the stone and as such it is prioritised over cut, clarity and carat in the valuing process, making grading more subjective and less sophisticated than the grading of diamonds. “When it comes to coloured stones, the intensity and purity of the colour is where the value lies. Intense bright colours are the marketplace ideal. The problem is that deciding just how dark or light a stone should be is subjective,” says Zakharchenko.

For this reason experts recommend only buying stones with a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America, which is the most widely regarded and recognised gem laboratory in the world. Another consideration is exclusivity and while rarity often equals profit, there are some exceptions. “Sometimes the geological rarity of a gem can jeopardise its commercial value,” says Khadra. “Take tsavorite garnet, which is much rarer than emerald and sometimes more beautiful. Yet because of its rarity, it cannot compete with emeralds in terms of the consumer perception of its value.” For this reason Khadra advises investing in more popular gems such as sapphires, tanzanite, emeralds and rubies. Zakharchenko agrees. “On the basis of research conducted by leading world banks we know that sales of rubies, emeralds and sapphires are on the rise from private buyers and jewellery companies.”

Gem prices have jumped and slumped before, with emerald prices hitting an all-time low just over as decade ago after a surge in flawed stones hit the market and sent prices tumbling. However, the benefit of investing in gems is that even if prices fall substantially you can safely assume that a precious ruby ring or an emerald pendant will always be a statement of style.

While coloured gem jewellery has always been considered ‘en vogue’, recent celebrity endorsements have given the market a boost. Mezzaluna This stylish Italian eatery, located at Emirates Palace, offers authentic Italian cuisine in a luxurious five-star environment. The service starts at the door when you are graciously welcomed by the maître d’ who, in turn, passes you to a conscientious team of waiting staff to attend and anticipate your every need. The delicious olive oil, piping-hot bread and fragrant chunks of Parmesan cheese placed on the table as you are seated are a sign of things to come. As you’d expect from Emirates Palace, one of Abu Dhabi’s most luxurious hotels, the menu at Mezzaluna is a culinary adventure that blends old classics, such as minestrone soup, with contemporary innovations like Vitello Tonnato (veal and roasted capsicum served with piedmonte potatoes and tuna sauce). Adventurous diners should begin with the warm calf’s tongue before moving on to the Fergato all Veneziana (which is calf’s liver, caramelised onions, parsley, balsamic and soft polenta). Flavour of the month Daily fasting may be required of Muslims during the Holy Month of Ramadan, but as the sun sets, a lavish iftar feast of traditional Arabic cuisine awaits in homes and restaurants across the emirate

Anyone with a love of Arabic food is in for a treat this month as hundreds of lavish iftar buffets are served across the emirate in five-star restaurants. With hummus, grilled meats, freshly baked breads, soups and a whole host of other delicious Middle Eastern cuisine, the iftar is a true feast for the senses. Yet these full-scale, opulent affairs represent much more than a hearty repast. Iftar is the meal over which Muslims break their daily fast throughout the Islamic Holy Month of Ramadan. They seek to become closer to God by following a set of religious and spiritual observations and the fast (sawn) between sunrise and sunset is the most challenging obligation. After sunset, Muslims traditionally break the fast with dates and some milk before enjoying harira (Moroccan soup) containing lentils, coriander, tomatoes and dried figs. Soup is considered a key dish at iftar as it is easy to digest and gives almost instant relief from the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fasting. Many iftars serve one clear and one creamy soup such as vegetable, chicken, spinach or cauliflower. These are traditionally followed by cold mezze such as fattoush (salad mixed with fried pita bread), hummus and moutabel (a smoked aubergine dip). Then comes the hot mezze often comprising sambusek (fried pastry stuffed with cheese or meat and spices) and kibbeh (a mix of ground meat and bulgar wheat). Both are popular throughout the Middle East and a must for anyone in search of authentic regional cuisine.

However, the highlight of any iftar is the main course. Ouzi, for example, which is lamb cooked in liquid and served on a bed of rice or lamb stuffed with spiced rice and baked, is often the pinnacle of the meal and many consider that iftar just wouldn’t be iftar without it. Ouzi is a delicious and flamboyant dish, but it’s also a traditional dish that conveys the warmth of home.

Drink to that Alcohol is forbidden in Islam so what refreshments can one expect? Rose-flavoured milk and kamardin, an apricot syrup, are traditional refreshments. So too is jallab, a syrupy drink made from dates, grape molasses and rose water. This sweet drink is usually served with crushed ice, floating pine nuts and raisins. Tamar hindi, a popular form of date juice, is another favourite.

Fruits are the cornerstone of beverages during Ramadan. Look out for brightly coloured creations from blended smoothies to non-alcoholic cocktails. Those with a sweet tooth are catered for too as a range of exotic desserts is also served. Treats such as baklava (a rich, sweet pastry with chopped nuts and syrup or honey) and moghrabiya (panna cotta cooked with milk and pistachios) are wonderfully indulgent at the end of the evening’s feast. I’m originally from South Devon in England, but moved to Al Ain in November 2011 for work. It was an extremely surreal and exciting moment coming face to face with the vastness of the Arabian desert for the first time. I’m amazed at the vast number of attractions and cultural sites there are to visit. During the cooler months I made the most of being outdoors by visiting the Green Mubazzarah – a recreation park located at the foot of Jebel Hafeet. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in the local culture, while enjoying a few sporting games and a barbecue. As a devoted water enthusiast, the Corniche is one of my favourite leisure spots. This lengthy stretch of beach has a special ambience and it’s easy to see why it has become such an iconic location. With the Marina Mall and Abu Theatre at one end and Port Zayed and the Iranian souk at the other, it’s also great for keeping visitors entertained. I tend to work most weekends, but when I do get some time off I head straight to Yas Island. The incredible

F1 circuit is definitely a sight to see and the driving packages are great for some fast-paced entertainment. I’ll take any chance to get back in the water so I love hanging out at Yas Marina which has a growing community of stand-up paddlers and it often hosts free events. At the Marina, Stars ‘n’ Bars is always a good choice for a causal bite to eat while watching international sports. For more upmarket dining, the Cipriani restaurant with fanastic views of the waterfront, never fails to impress. I’ve been thrilled with the amount of sporting events here too. I attended the Volvo Ocean race in January where the action was spectacular and I’m really looking forward to the buzz of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix later in the year. For me, however, the best part about my move to Al Ain has been my involvement in Wadi Adventure. As home of the UAE’s first manmade surfing pool and white-water rafting channels it is a truly world-class sporting facility and to be able to access my favourite sport every day is a dream come true.
