A hugely prominent and celebrated monument in Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is arguably the most important architectural treasure of contemporary UAE society – and one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Initiated by the late President of the United Arab Emirates, HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, fondly thought of as ‘the father of the nation’, its role as a place of worship, learning and discovery has particular significance during the Holy Month of Ramadan, which is expected to end on August 18.

RAMADAN kareem Happy Ramadan, or Ramadan Kareem, is the greeting Muslims use during the Holy Month, a time of fasting, prayer and self-sacrifice. Concierge explores Ramadan’s fascinating intricacies

Q Ramadan is the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic calendar, the month in which Muslims believe that Allah chose to reveal the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad. For Muslims, Ramadan (expected to run until August 18) is a deeply spiritual time of year that marks a personal journey in which they seek to become closer to God. Muslims deepen their faith during Ramadan by fasting – abstaining from eating and drinking between sunrise and sunset and by reciting the Muslim profession of faith, performing ritual prayers five times a day and donating time, food and money to charitable causes. By helping others, controlling emotions, such as anger, lust and envy and refraining from gossip and physical intimacy, Muslims aim to please the Almighty and cleanse the soul.

A social experience

2

To those unfamiliar with Islam, Ramadan has its own distinctive ambience and while daily life continues, there are subtle differences that every visitor will experience. Working hours are curtailed and shops may close for prayer times, so be aware of the slower pace of life and adjusted hours of operation. Also, to be respectful to those observing the rituals of the season, nonMuslims are expected to refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day and to dress modestly. Ramadan is a social season and everyone, not just followers of Islam, can get involved in Ramadan-related activities. Friends and families gather each evening to enjoy iftar (the meal over which the fast is broken) and celebrate their blessings. Visitors to Abu Dhabi are encouraged to experience an iftar buffet and sample the full range of Middle Eastern cuisine. For more information on iftar and some of the dishes you can expect to eat, turn to the Taste section from page 72.

Sawm, fasting during Ramadan, is one of the five pillars of Islam together with shahadah, sincerely reciting the Muslim profession of faith; salat, performing ritual prayers five times a day; hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca; and zakat, giving alms (or charity) to the poor and needy. Ramadan is a time of giving and Muslims donate money, clothes and food to charities. Visit any of the city’s shopping malls throughout the Holy Month and it’s likely you will see charity stands dotted around the main thoroughfares. Visitors who would like to participate in the spirit of Ramadan might like to give larger tips than usual to their waiters or taxi drivers. The end of Ramadan is marked by a three-day holiday called Eid Al Fitr expected to begin between August 17 and 19 (its commencement unpredictable until nearer the end of Ramadan as it relies on the sighting of the new moon). The first day of Eid is spent with family, although the senior member of the household will pay courtesy visits to elders or sheikhs to wish them Eid Mubarak (a blessed Eid).

Learning about Islam

Respecting Ramadan

For those with a limited knowledge of Islam, a guided tour around Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an excellent way to find out more about the faith. The largest mosque in the UAE and a must-see on any trip to the capital, both the building and the interior are breathtaking. More than 3,000 workers helped to construct the mosque using natural materials such as marble, stone, gold, semiprecious stones, crystals and ceramics. The maximum capacity is approximately 41,000 and the overall structure is 22,412 square metres. As one of the most visited buildings in the UAE, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is not only a place of worship and Friday

Refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day in Ramadan, even inside cars It is considered polite to cover shoulders and legs The only live music played during Ramadan is traditional Arabic music. Dancing is not allowed Most businesses and government offices will close between 2 and 4pm Iftar, the meal over which the daily fast is broken, is held around 7pm depending on the time of year and when the sun sets Supermarkets and shops may be closed during the day, but will usually have extended hours at night – sometimes until midnight

gathering, but also a centre of learning and discovery through the mosque’s education and visitor programmes. Its doors are open to everyone to encourage cultural understanding. Throughout Ramadan, the mosque is open to visitors from 9am to noon, but is closed on Fridays. Complimentary walking tours start at 10am and 11am and are led by Emirati guides who explain the architecture, artistic elements and Islamic culture. Visitors are advised to arrive approximately 15 minutes before the tour time and meet one of the visitor experience co-ordinators. General visiting hours outside of Ramadan are 9am to noon, daily. Majestic Minarets Ramadan highlights the important role of mosques in Emirati culture and their beautiful presence on the skyline

Q Mosque architecture Almost every neighbourhood in the UAE is punctuated with the elegant minarets of mosques and the melodic sound of the call to prayer reminds visitors they are in the heart of Arabia. Although mosques vary greatly in appearance around the world, they contain common architectural features. Practically every mosque has at least one minaret – a tower from which the call to prayer is broadcast five times a day. Mosques vary in status and their respective importance can be gleaned from the number of minarets they possess. No mosque has more than seven minarets, the number of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. A mosque must also have a mihrab, a niche in the wall which indicates the direction of Mecca. Worshippers must face this while praying. Minarets and mihrabs can be simple or elaborate, depending on the style. The UAE’s mosques vary greatly in design and include Anatolian mosques, characterised by a large central dome; Iranian and central Asian multi-domed varieties; Shiite mosques with ornate green and blue tiling; and Moorishand Mughal-influenced designs.

The capital’s huge, landmark mosque can accommodate 40,000 worshippers. It is named after Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and the first president of the UAE, who is also buried here. The breathtaking complex can be explored by the public every day apart from Fridays. During Ramadan the mosque will be open from 9am until noon and tours start at 10am and 11am. At other times of the year, one-hour tours are held from Sunday to Thursday at 10am, 11am and 4.30pm, Fridays at 4.30pm and 8pm and Saturdays at 10am, 11am, 2pm, 4.30pm and 8pm. The awe-inspiring building, which opened in 2007, is inspired by Mughal and Moorish mosques. See szgmc.ae for more information or call 02 4416444.

Islam is the official religion of the UAE and the majority of nationals are Sunni Muslims. Many of the country’s Middle Eastern, African and Asian expatriates also practise Islam.

6

Prayer is required five times a day: at dawn (fajr); noon (dhuhr); mid-afternoon (asr); sunset (maghrib); and twilight (isha’a). During prayers a Muslim must perform a series of prostrations while facing in the direction of the Kaaba, the ancient shrine at the centre of the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

Jumeirah Mosque, Dubai With its exquisite detailing and graceful Anatolian dome, Jumeirah Mosque is Dubai’s best-known mosque and arguably its most beautiful. Non-Muslims can visit thanks to the ‘Open Doors, Open Minds’ tour by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. The hour-long tour starts at 10am sharp on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday and teaches visitors about the architecture of the mosque and its place in Emirati culture and traditions. See cultures.ae for more information or call 04 3536666.

Worshippers must also perform wudu (the necessary ablutions before praying) so every mosque must have a water supply. Although non-Muslims cannot enter most of the UAE’s mosques, a few are open to visitors at certain times. All visitors must make sure they are dressed modestly – no shorts or exposed backs or arms and women must wear a headscarf. Shoes must also be removed before entering. 5&6 Jumeirah Mosque, Dubai 7&8 Grand Mosque, Dubai

This multi-domed structure, next to Dubai Museum in the Bastakiya quarter, contains the tallest minaret in the emirate. It was built in 1990 in the style of the original Grand Mosque which was demolished to make way for another mosque in 1960. With its sand-coloured walls and wooden shutters, the mosque harmonises with the surrounding old quarter of Bur Dubai. The original mosque was the centre of Dubai’s religious and cultural life and contained a kuttab school where children learnt to recite the Qur’an from memory. Unfortunately, nonMuslims can only admire this mosque from outside.

the colour of the marks on the skin, the more successful a marriage will be and the deeper the bond between the bride and her new in-laws. Visitors are often given the opportunity to experience henna painting first hand while partaking in activities such as desert safaris or through small henna boutiques located within hotels. The henna artists work quickly and purposefully, often incorporating their own designs with traditional symbols and patterns passed down from generation to generation. Arabic designs are often fairly large and inspired by flowers, whereas Indian henna tends to be finer and more intricate. After the henna has dried, the depth of the colour will continue to develop on the skin for several hours. Completely temporary, henna designs can be enjoyed until the design starts to fade and eventually disappear. See heritageforhenna.com to find out where you can experience henna painting in the UAE.

The ancient practice of henna painting is one of the earliest examples of adorning the body with decorative patterns. In fact, its history reaches so far into the past that it is difficult to identify exactly when and who first experimented with the dye. Evidence suggests, however, that the custom originated in the Middle East up to 6,000 years ago when the herb was used medicinally as well as to dye hair, leather, wool and skin. Now, rich mahogany-coloured designs can often be seen intricately winding from the tips of the fingers, over the hands and up the wrists of many Middle Eastern women throughout the UAE. Stories and folklaw first spoken at gatherings around the earliest firesides told of the magical properties of henna in keeping away evil spirits, creating deeper bonds between families and healing the sick. Henna paste is prepared from freshly ground leaves of the lawsonia inermis tree before being mixed with warm water and syphoned into a small plastic cone. The tip of the cone is cut, making a tiny hole and allowing the henna artist to create thin lines with the paste and form elaborate patterns. The leaves contain a compound that bonds particularly well to proteins – such as keratin found in the hair and skin – which gives henna the longevity that has historically made it such effective body paint. Henna adornment has become traditional for joyful occasions, including religious celebrations such as Eid, the birth of a baby and especially at weddings. Many traditional Arabic weddings will involve a henna ritual for the bride the day before, known as ‘Laylat Al Henna’. Women gather to eat, sing and dance while the hands and feet of the bride are embellished with designs incorporating symbols of fertility and love. Some believe that the deeper

H E N N A H I S T O RY Pre-Islam, many people in the Middle East believed they lived alongside a race of spirit beings called the jinn. They could be both malevolent and benevolent. If a child fell over, they were said to have stood on a jinn. To appeal to the jinn’s kind side, henna, sugar and barley was given to them to bargain for their good graces.

great escapes If the soaring summer temperatures become too much to bear, seek out these cooling activities and adventures

Q At the peak of summer, UAE temperatures have been known to soar to 50 degrees Celcius. It comes as no surprise then that, as the barometer continues to rise, many visitors will be seeking solace from the heat. While daytime desert adventures and sunbathing may be off the agenda, the emirate provides plenty of cooling pursuits to keep guests entertained. From diving in the region’s clear coastal waters to visiting an air-conditioned shopping mall and from cooling spa treaments to scuba diving and an extreme water sports park, there is something for every member of the family.

Teeming with exotic fish and multi-coloured coral gardens, not to mention over one-third of the world’s species of whales and dolphins, the UAE is a scuba diver’s paradise. Unlike other countries where most dive sites are seasonal, the waters here can be explored all year round. Along the coastlines of Abu Dhabi and Dubai there are some fascinating wreck dives for the experienced diver and a chance to spot the highly endandered dugong. One of the top dive sites is Jassim – an intersting wreck broken into three sections. Expect to see large schools of barracuda as well as stingrays. The details: Excursion prices can vary. Fuelling passion With over 200 vehicles from a sheikh’s personal collection, the Emirates National Auto Museum is a must for both casual visitors and motoring enthusiasts

Q Most people at some point in their lives will have collected something, whether it’s stamps, coins, football cards or even fridge magnets. Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan collects cars. From factory-spec collectors’ editions to custom-made vehicles, his private collection exceeds 200 prime pieces and includes not just cars, but also military vehicles, trucks and caravans in all shapes and sizes. He even counts a jet as part of the assemblage. It’s something that has to be seen to be appreciated and fortunately for visitors to Abu Dhabi, this can be done most days of the week. Housed in a giant pyramid on the road to Liwa, the Emirates National Auto Museum is a must-see for car lovers and those who appreciate the quirkier side of life. While not yet sporting a full collection, the museum has been designed with a motoring theme in mind. Line markings, similar to those on roads, direct visitors past each of the exhibits, which are illuminated by miniature street lights. Roundabouts in the middle of the museum display cars, while an upper deck will accommodate even more unique vehicles.

33

Bigger is better One of the most amazing exhibits is a giant, red 1950s Dodge Power Wagon truck, which gained a Guinness World Record for being the largest vehicle on the planet. Inside this fully functional beast is a fourbedroom apartment, living area, kitchen and bathrooms and parked underneath it to demonstrate its size are full-sized cars. It is said the 1950s Dodge Power Wagon is Sheikh Hamad’s all-time favourite vehicle because of the role it played in the early years of the oil boom in the emirate. Early oil prospectors used these sturdy work horses in the desert and at the Emirates National Auto Museum you’ll also find the real thing as well as the super-scale model. When constructing the giant version – which is exactly 64 times the size of the original – Sheikh Hamad was only restricted by the size of the tyres he could find, which happen to be from an oil rig transporter. The wipers came from an ocean liner and the headlights are said to have cost AED5,900 (US$1,600) each. Although the truck has an engine, driver’s seat and a steering wheel, it can only move short distances. Speaking to British motoring icon Jeremy Clarkson for his 1990s television show Motorworld, Sheikh Hamad said the pieces for the vehicle were built in Abu Dhabi, but assembled in the desert as the roads were too narrow to safely accommodate the eight-metre-wide, 50-tonne monster.

Among the more customised exhibits is a caravan that looks like a globe. Inside the four-storey mobile home, which is exactly one-millionth the size of the world, there are nine bedrooms

Sing me a rainbow

Unique and quirky

Sheikh Hamad has been affectionately nicknamed the ‘Rainbow Sheikh’, a moniker that makes perfect sense after entering the pyramid. Confirming the title, he has seven S Class Mercedes which are identical except for their differing shades representing the colours of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The cars have colour-coded interiors too, from the leather seats and dashboard, to the carpet, rear vision mirror and dangling prayer beads. Some say the vehicles were commissioned for the sheikh’s wedding, while others say he had them made – one for each day of week. Also in the set is a collection of Minis, from the old open-air Moke to the more recent racing-striped models reminiscent of the film, The Italian Job. There are fancy sports cars, vintage Buicks, Rolls Royces – including one that reportedly cost AED2.9 million (US$4.6 million) – a huge number of Mercedes-Benz (more than any other make, in fact), a New York taxi, a California police car and a vintage fire truck. There’s even a glittery silver buggy that the sheikh had custom made to replicate one built by Mercedes-Benz in 1986 to mark the company’s 100-year anniversary. The original was a one-off and the German car manufacturer was unwilling to repeat the construction, so Sheikh Hamad had one built from a small plastic model. Another replica is that of the world’s first modern car, which was invented by Karl Benz in 1886.

Among the more customised exhibits is a caravan that looks like a globe. Inside the four-storey mobile home, which is exactly one-millionth the size of the world, there are nine bedrooms. In the car park, visitors will find another Guinness World Record recipient – an eightbedroom apartment on wheels, which is the same height as a four-storey building. Behind the pyramid is an L-1011 TriStar jet. There is a collection of military vehicles, four-wheel drives and a full-sized Kenworth truck which looks surprisingly small when placed near some of the larger pieces. Although very few of the exhibits have explanatory information and visitors who

know little about cars will not know whether they are looking at a factory-standard model or a custom-made gem, it is not a deterrent to thoroughly enjoying the visit. The Emirates National Auto Museum is definitely worth a look, even if it is just to marvel at one man’s extraordinary passion for cars. The museum is approximately one hour’s drive from Abu Dhabi on the E65 road to Hameem. It is signposted from the road, but the huge pyramid is hard to miss. The museum is usually open from 9am until 6pm, but closes for lunch. It is best to call to confirm times before making the journey. Admission is AED50. Contact: 02 6676999.

A brief history of time Concierge visits the past and present of renowned Swiss watch brand Jaquet Droz

Q

1

Everyone loves a good tale and when it comes to the world of horology, there are few stories more compelling than that of Pierre and Henri-Louis Jaquet-Droz who built the Jaquet Droz brand along with partner JeanFrédéric Leschot. Pierre Jaquet-Droz (1721-1790) was a pioneering clockmaker and inventor and the first to develop and export his luxury pieces internationally, with marked success in China. His is a tale comprising all the best elements of drama – ascendance to fame, success, tragedy – with fleeting roles played by royal figures such as Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, as his enterprises became famous across the royal courts of Europe. In the world of clockmaking, Pierre Jaquet-Droz shone brightly, achieving success that many family manufacturers achieved only after generations of toil – or never at all. Elitest, exacting and with ingenious attention to detail, Pierre took the mechanics of time and movement to new levels. He also knew how to attract the attentions of the wealthy and discerning, combining rare skills of invention, technical know-how and a mind that could think creatively, marketing the products of his labour far and wide.

39

This was the story revealed to selected media in Switzerland to celebrate the legacy and revival of Jaquet Droz in the world of watchmaking. Concierge was lucky enough to be among them and learn more about the various signatures of Jaquet Droz that have survived time and enabled Swatch Group to extend its DNA and develop the contemporary incarnation of the brand. In a world that focuses more on the future than the past, one of the more alluring attractions of watchmaking is its adherence to tradition. Discerning buyers purchase from manufacturers who both develop and build their products by hand and from those that possess a rich legacy reflected in the timepieces available today. This is a factor not lost on the Swatch Group that added the Jaquet Droz brand to its portfolio in 2000 and painstakingly rebuilt the brand, before introducing it once again to demanding enthusiasts. No wonder then that the first stop on our Swiss itinerary of discovery was a visit to the Musée d’art et d’histoire de Neuchâtel where Jaquet Droz CEO Marc Hayek welcomed several hundred attendees from all over the world to the museum which contained an impressive and exquisite selection of examples of Jaquet Droz’s work dating back to the 18th century.

2

The company’s founders recognised the interest of audiences by creating many custom pieces designed to appeal to individual markets, from ornate decorations... through to chimes and automata

4

Here we learned that an incredible two-thirds of Jaquet Droz’s business came from China during the height of the brand’s success between 1781 and 1810. The company’s founders recognised the interest of audiences by creating many custom pieces designed to appeal to individual markets, from ornate decorations (Jaquet-Droz was known for his incorporation of fine art into pieces) through to chimes and automata that reflected culture and interest. The Jaquet-Droz family is originally from the Neuchâtel Mountains and has made a welcome return to the city with three concurrently running exhibitions at The Musée d’art et d’histoire de Neuchâtel, the Musée international d’horlogerie de La Chaux-de-Fonds and the Musée d’horlogerie du LocleChâteau des Monts.

The three museums have come together to present an exhibition (running until September 30) devoted to Jaquet Droz, celebrating the achievements of the three original founders and demonstrating their most impressive work. All three exhibitions together provide a complete appreciation of the Jaquet Droz story. Pierre Jaquet-Droz’s genius was demonstrated in the introduction of three fascinating automata that had been developed as demonstration pieces to draw attention in major markets. The automata were designed as human figurines with their mechanics built into the back of the figures themselves rather than in separate bases as had been accomplished previously. This was a pioneering achievement for Jaquet Droz that drew international audiences from far and wide wherever the automata were demonstrated.

There are three humanoid automata, known as The Writer, The Musician and The Draughtsman, still preserved at the Musée d’art et d’histoire de Neuchâtel, but temporarily separated for the purposes of the exhibition with one at each museum. The Writer was the first automaton created and is about 70cm tall, taking the form of a little boy sitting on a stool, writing with a goose-quill pen on a mahogany table. This mechanism is the most complex of the three humanoid automata and can write any 40-character text on three lines. The striking realism of the mechanical figures dazzled the royal courts of Europe. The Musician, The Writer and The Draughtsman went on to become legendary – with the draughtsman famously drawing a picture of a horse rather than Louis XVI (due to an operator’s error) when it was demonstrated to Marie Antoinette.

7

The last stop on our itinerary was a visit to the manufactory in la Chaux-deFonds, which has now presented a new automaton – The Magician – out of deference and respect to the brand’s heritage. The Magician is driven by a mechanism comprising 1,437 parts and components and with a few turns of a key, the figure comes alive. Its head turns from right to left, its arms begin to move and its hands raise one bell-shaped cover after another. Like an illusionist performing, he makes a bird appear, flying from out of the surface of the table. Fully developed and built by hand, The Magician has been designed to inspire the same fascination today as Jaquet Droz automatons did in royal families centuries ago. Automata, chimes and fine art are as much a part of the modern Jaquet Droz as they were in the time of Pierre and Henri-Louis. While at the manufactory we witnessed the development of a new timepiece featuring all three of these elements contained within a single watch case. We were also introduced to the Time Writing Machine, developed over a period of eight years, that can mechanically write the time of day, driven by more than 1,200 components, including 84 ball bearings, 50 cams and nine belts. Clearly, art, together with ingenuity, continue at Jaquet Droz.

ARABIAN TREASURES Eid Al Fitr (the festival of fast breaking) is marked by the exchanging of presents. Concierge compiles a selection of traditional gifts that offers a true sense of Arabia

Q From designer boutiques to traditional souks, Abu Dhabi provides a wealth of shopping opportunities for visitors. With Eid Al Fitr, the festival of fast-breaking at the end of Ramadan, (expected to begin on or around August 18 at the sighting of the new moon), there couldn’t be a better time to purchase gifts for friends and family. Eid is a time to show charity to others and bestow presents on loved ones, often with traditional Arabian gifts. Historically, Abu Dhabi’s desert culture resulted in possessions that had to be both practical and sometimes transportable. This has translated into modernday souvenir items such as traditional wooden chests and wooden doors which are often now hung as works of art or transformed into furniture. Many outlets that sell these large items also stock smaller items such as the Arabian coffee pot and cups (a symbol of local hospitality), prayer beads in a multitude of colours, woodcarvings in the form of dhows, falconry equipment and canes which were traditionally used in Emirati dancing. Traditional wedding jewellery made from heavy silver or gold and crafted into necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings are coveted forms of historic art and make beautiful displays when mounted in glass box frames. Once valued more highly than gold, Arabian perfume (oudh) has been traded for centuries and nowadays is often sold with a small wooden chest and charcoal burner as an incense kit. In addition, ghutra headscarves, the distinctive headdresses worn traditionally by men in the Middle East, have become a popular fashion accessory worldwide and a huge range can be found in Abu Dhabi’s souks and malls. Read on for our top selection…

Aromatic oudh The heady aroma of oudh has been hugely popular in the Middle East for centuries. Extracted from the dried resin from the frankincense tree of southern Oman, oudh is considered extremely precious and visitors to Abu Dhabi cannot fail to notice its distinctive scent. It is a long-standing tradition to burn oudh as incense to welcome guests. Indeed, upon arrival hotel guests may notice the aroma wafting throughout the reception area, as well as in selected shops and souks. Those who want to purchase an incense kit to use at home should head to Souk Al Zafarana in Al Ain which sells a range of traditional items, including oudh. Situated just around the corner from Al Jimi Mall, the souk is open daily from 10am to 1pm and 8pm until midnight. In liquid form, oudh is a rich and long-lasting perfume that can be found in luxury fragrance houses such as Arabian Oud, which has a number of outlets in the UAE including a shop

at Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi. There, you can find everything from spray perfumes to classic oil perfumes, such as the citrus-infused Arabian Nights, which can cost around AED400 for 3ml in a crystal bottle. Le Labo in Paris Gallery, Marina Mall is another reputable supplier and creates bespoke blends for customers.

Chocolate made from camels’ milk is a truly luxurious treat with a smooth texture and a unique flavour that comes from blending camels’ milk with vanilla, honey and cocoa beans

Gourmet desserts In any traditional Arabic sweet shop, dozens of shiny trays are piled high with baklava and the sweet smell of freshly made kunafa (a cheese pastry soaked in sweet syrup). Other popular choices of sweets include griba, made from soft, floury dough and mammoul, filled with dates, walnuts and pistachios. Lebanese sweets, which are made mostly from pastry, honey, ground nuts and dates, are also delicious. Dates are another excellent choice and, because of their naturally sweet flavour, are often considered ‘the desert’s candy’. A classic gift choice, this distinctive fruit holds an important place in Arabian heritage as a vital source of

nutrition. Sampling one of the more modern varieties is a must, such as those dipped in chocolate, stuffed with candied orange peel, wrapped in nougat or sprinkled with coconut. Bateel, a renowned date delicatessen, stocks an astonishing selection of luxury dates and also sells sparkling date juice, date jams, preserves and even balsamic vinegar made from dates. For something out of the ordinary, chocolate made from camels’ milk is a truly luxurious treat with a smooth texture and a unique flavour that comes from blending camels’ milk with vanilla, honey and cocoa beans. Available from many souvenir shops, it retails in bars, as pralines and as camel-shaped figurines.

Ornamental coffee pots Just like burning oudh, serving coffee to guests as part of a warm welcome is an age-old ritual in the region. The UAE’s affinity for coffee is even showcased in a number of imaginative ways, from the eye-catching ‘coffee pot roundabout’ in the emirate of Fujeirah, which features a large-scale sculpture of an Arabic-style coffee pot, to a dallah appearing on the one-dirham coin. A dallah is an ornate metal pot with a long spout that is specifically designed for serving Arabic coffee. Rich in taste, local coffee is typically roasted very lightly, with a pinch of cardamom added. Visitors who want to carry on the tradition at home can purchase dallahs at souks or souvenir shops. Simply look out for establishments selling nuts and spices, as coffee is never far away. The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri carries a wide range, which can be bought along with a variety of roasts.

Smoking shisha (also known as hookah or hubbly bubbly) is a popular Emirati tradition. Groups of locals and expatriates sharing a shisha pipe along the Corniche is a common sight and the different flavours and smells, from apple to grape, are synonymous with most Abu Dhabi cafés. Shisha pipes can be bought throughout the capital, in souks, specialised shops and even supermarkets. All you need to decide is whether the purchase is to be purely ornamental or actually used, as the type of shisha pipe to buy will depend on this. Shisha pipes range from the mini (which most tourists choose to purchase) through the regular metre-high models to the two-metre monsters that grace the cafés. Prices start from as little as AED20, although larger, more decorative pipes come with larger price tags.

Gold While gold might not be as affordable as it once was, visitors can still achieve a relatively good deal, depending on the current exchange rate and the how effective your haggling skills are. Those looking for novelty value should head to Emirates Palace where the Gold To Go vending machine, itself covered in 24-carat gold, dispenses one-gramme, five-gramme and 10-gramme bars of gold, as well as one-ounce bars. Prices start from AED450. For something truly special, the Gold Souk, in the Madina Zayed area, is worth a visit. With over 100 shops that sell gold from a variety of countries, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Europe and India (as well as Omani silver), there’s something for all tastes. The shops base prices on the daily market price, but it’s still worth casting around for a better deal. Nothing will get the retailer whipping out a calculator and doing a quick sum to beat the odds quicker than the customer’s retreating back.

Q w o r d s b y c h a r l o t t e va n d e n b r o u C q u e

The pen has played an important role in some of the most monumental moments in history. Simple signatures using a quill and ink sealed the destiny of nations on meticulously handwritten documents such as the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence, while literary works of art like Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice, which transformed the genre of romantic fiction, began life as handwritten words. Even contemporary masterpieces such as On the Road by Jack Kerouac and J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter were likely first conceived as hurried notes on paper and for that reason it’s important to remember the power of the pen. Rediscover the romance of putting pen to paper with Concierge’s pick of the best writing implements on the market.

The family sold their creations first in their native Greece and then moved to Rome, opening the first Bulgari shop in 1884. The sterling silver Bulgari Scripta Volant is more than just a pen as it represents over 100 years of craftsmanship handed down from generation to generation. Similarly, this handsome pen can be enjoyed, treasured and passed to the next generation as a reminder of the power of the written word. Bulgari is available at Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi

Luxury brand Montgrappa pays homage to some of the biggest stars of the 20 th century in its ‘Icons’ series. Frank Sinatra follows Mohammed Ali and Bruce Lee as the inspiration behind a stunning set of writing instruments. The legendary maestro once said: “Orange is the happiest colour,” and this ballpoint pen is decorated in his favourite hue. The pin-stripe motif takes inspiration from the suits Sinatra often wore and the cap is emblazoned with his signature fedora hat and pocket clip carved into the shape of an old-style microphone. If Sinatra’s music isn’t enough of a reminder of his talent, then this is sure to delight a devoted enthusiast. Montegrappa is available at Rivoli outlets at Abu Dhabi Mall, Marina Mall, Al Wahda Mall

Channel the genius of one of the 20 th century’s legendary film makers with this beautifully crafted, limited edition pen. As a tribute to the master of horror and suspense, the design of Monblanc’s Alfred Hitchcock fountain pen is inspired by the dark staircase featured in his spine-chilling 1958 film, Vertigo. The sterling silver cone of the pen features 53 hatch marks, one for each of the films directed by Hitchcock throughout his remarkable career. The silver ring on the base of the pen’s lid also showcases notes that would have identified the original film reel of Psycho. The legend that is Karl Lagerfeld shows once again that his genius for design knows no bounds. After joining forces with Coca-Cola to project his vision on to a Diet Coke bottle and with Steiff to produce a limited edition teddy bear in his own likeness, he has now joined ranks with luxury brand S.T. Dupont to design this stunning Prestige fountain pen. Inspired by the signature fan he is often pictured with, a top view of the pen reveals this shape carried throughout the length. Lagerfeld hand-picked the lotus red lacquer for its regal elegance and matched the shade with gold finishes and the precious gem mounted on the clip. The embodiment of style and sophistication, this pen has also been designed for comfort to ensure that in moments of inspiration words flow without interruption. S.T. AFTER the fast

1

From succulent ouzi to hearty harira, these traditional iftar dishes are bringing people together throughout the Holy Month

Q As the sun sets and the day’s fast draws to a close, families around the UAE sit down to enjoy their iftar feasts. Throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan, which falls between July and August this year, Muslims refrain from eating and drinking during the daylight hours. Not until the maghrib, or sunset prayer has been said, can they break the long day’s fast.

Dates Traditionally the first food to pass the lips at iftar is dates, a practice that goes back to the earliest days of Islam when the Prophet Muhammad used to break his fast with milk and dates. In addition to their symbolic value, dates also contain high levels of glucose, which is exactly what the body needs to raise low blood sugar levels after the day’s fast and prepare an empty stomach for a large meal.

Harira

3

Long periods of fasting can cause the stomach to contract so food is best introduced gently at iftar. Harira, a fragrant soup made from lamb, chickpeas and lentils, is the ideal way to ease the stomach into the feast. Originally a Berber stew from Morocco, but now a staple in Arabic cuisine, this delicious soup is also an excellent source of fibre and protein.

Malfoof A lighter version of the stuffed vine leaves that often feature on Lebanese mezze platters, this tasty starter can range from cabbage leaves wrapped around rice or bulgar wheat to entire cabbages stuffed with a wide variety of fillings. Malfoof is often accompanied by a fresh, minty sauce to complement the vegetarian flavours.

Ouzi Often the centrepiece of iftar feasts, this traditional dish of lamb served over rice and nuts is a true reflection of Arabic culture and hospitality. A whole lamb, seasoned with an aromatic blend of Middle Eastern spices, is slow-cooked until tender enough for the whole family to consume, largely using their hands. Historically, ouzi was cooked in a pit dug out of the desert sand and filled with charcoal. Today the magic is recreated in large, modern combination ovens by leading five-star hotels around the region. Almost all traditional-style iftar feasts will provide ouzi, although the flavours vary somewhat from chef to chef. For celebrity Arabic chef Osama El-Sayed Australian mutton is the best choice for ouzi. One popular trade secret reveals that

1 Dates 2 Harees 3 Traditionally, iftar buffets feature an Arabic mezze to start, including local staples like fattoush salad, tabbouleh, mutabbal, stuffed vine leaves, hummous, olives and large baskets of warm, arabic bread 4 Harira

At times of celebration, the well-off would prepare a large vat of Harees and sent it round to their neighbours

adding high-grade black pepper and cinnamon is the key to the perfect ouzi, while another advises chefs to rub the powdered spices with dried lemon and sea salt on the lamb, working from the inside out and using generous lashings of butter to moisten the meat. Only then is the lamb stuffed with the rice and nuts before being grilled to perfection.

Harees

4

Another firm favourite on iftar tables, this Emirati dish of cracked wheat and meat, soaked overnight then garnished with cinnamon or sugar, is often used to mark special occasions. Traditionally, at times of celebration, the

well-off would prepare a large vat of Harees before sending it round to their neighbours for all to enjoy. While it may not be the most visually attractive dish, Harees is nevertheless tasty, filling and packed full of nutrients.

Kousa Mahshi Lebanon, Syria and Egypt all lay claim to the invention of this tasty dish, which comprises rice or meat, topped with yoghurt and stuffed into a marrow or zucchini. Mint, garlic and other additions are often used to supplement the f lavour, which definitely justifies the determination of three countries to take the credit for the delicious recipe.

dining after dusk Get a true taste of Arabia at lavish iftar spreads across the emirate this Ramadan

Q Ramadan may be a period of abstinence by day, but when the sun goes down, bowls of fatoush salad and baskets of freshly baked flatbreads, interspersed with enormous platters of grilled meat and fish are piled onto buffet tables around Abu Dhabi for the nightly iftar feast. Starters such as kibbeh, grilled halloumi and falafel are served alongside selections of succulent dips that hail from countries across the Middle East. Steaming vats of lentil soup, extensive salad bars and tables laden with rich sweets feature everywhere, with the traditional umm ali bread pudding and honey-soaked Lebanese pastries for dessert. This Ramadan, almost every hotel in Abu Dhabi is offering one or more iftar buffets and there are enough options to dine in a different iftar tent every night of the Holy Month. To help you shortlist the venues, here are some of the choicest iftar buffets this year.

High steaks From the finest grass-fed Angus beef to 21-day-aged wagyu fillet, Abu Dhabi restaurants are serious about their steaks

Q W O R D S b y C h a r l o t t e V a n D e n Bro u c q u e

The increasing prevalence of extraordinarily high-quality beef such as wagyu is elevating meat-lovers’ expectations to new and higher levels. Diners now know just how exceptional beef can taste when time and care is taken over its production. To cater to this increased demand, a collection of chic eateries has emerged on the culinary scene, all of them dedicated to serving the ultimate steak – aging, marinating and cooking it to perfection. Rodeo Grill at the Beach Rotana (pictured) was Abu Dhabi’s very first steak restaurant and remains one of the best with its marble-graded wagyu cuts while the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr restaurant boasts a Michelin-star chef at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse and Grill. Another spot which stands out is the fun-filled Chamas Churrascaria & Bar at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi. Here, diners not only eat all the deliciously grilled meat they can, there’s also an exceptional South American party atmosphere heightened further by the live band that performs every night. If a more tranquil atmosphere is called for, then 55 & 5th at the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort cannot be beaten for an intimate dining experience. The steak is pretty outstanding too, having been aged in a constant humidity and temperature while steeping in Himalayan rock salt. Read on to find your perfect match…

Rodeo Grill Tipped to be one of Abu Dhabi’s preeminent restaurants, the Rodeo Grill boasts an exceptional dining experience within a rustic wooden setting. If it’s beef you’re looking for then you’ve definitely come to the right place with a choice of juicy Angus and wagyu steaks taking centre stage. Sink into one of the large green leather armchairs and take in the hustle and bustle of the open kitchen while pondering the comprehensive menu. A collection of starters designed to whet the appetite get the meal off to a mouth-watering start. Rodeo’s rich brown onion soup is accompanied by a comforting golden crust of parmesan pastry. An abundance of meat, fish and vegetarian mains courses promise to satisfy diverse tastes, but it’s the exquisite beef that should catch the discerning diner’s attention. The US Angus steaks are exceptional, but the wagyu beef from Australia takes the top accolade. Choose between a fillet

or ribeye cut that have been awarded a ‘marbling grade’ which determines the richness of the meat. Browse the ‘Some like it sweet’ section for a fitting finale. Classics such as chocolate soufflé, white chocolate cheesecake and a selection of delectable ice creams can be paired with one of a list of desert wines. Pull up a comfy chair next to the backlit flame-effect wall in the chic, library-like interior and begin the inevitable cognitive tussle as you try to decide what to sample from the menu. With a three-Michelin-star gastronomic master at the helm plus a culinary brigade led by executive chef John K Cordeaux, there’s an exciting mix of gourmet fare on offer. Plenty of ‘surf’ as well as ‘turf’ choices are available making sustainable, locally caught fish a food-conscious option. Don’t overlook the starters either from oysters, caviar and seafood broth to a duo of wagyu Carpaccio and Angus beef tartare. The beef has been carefully sourced with a choice of Australian wagyu, American and Canadian Angus and the 500-gram waistline-busting Porterhouse is reserved only for the truly ravenous. Chamas Churrascaria & Bar If you haven’t experienced the delights of the Brazilian churrascaria then you are in for a treat at Chamas Churrascaria & Bar. There’s a huge range of beef, lamb and chicken marinated and barbequed on huge skewers waiting to be sampled. Passadores circulate the freshly cooked fare, carving slices of your desired grill straight onto your plate. There are 15 different types of meat to choose from, including a perfectly cooked ribeye steak. Each diner has a card with a green and red side to let their servers know whether to keep it coming or stop serving them for the present. A full buffet of appetiser and salad items provides some lighter bites. For those whose meal just isn’t complete without a sweet treat, a menu of traditional deserts is on hand. 55&5th, The Grill There’s a distinct feeling of exclusivity at 55&5th, The Grill with its intimate setting and small number of tables. Named after the address of the original St. Regis Hotel in New York, the classic lounge and restaurant features vaulted ceilings, low lighting, high-backed leather chairs and dark wooden floors. Innovative appetisers look almost too beautiful to eat with elaborately layered ingredients. Unusual and luxurious flavours combine to create interesting accompaniments to foie gras terrine, scallops and wagyu beef. Obsiblue prawns are delivered lightly cooked with sweet pea raviolini, green garlic and tempura squash blossoms.

Saddle of rabbit braised for 36 hours, organic chicken and farm-reared milkfed veal, plus a hearty selection of fish, all make a convincing argument to be ordered immediately. However, it’s the grass-fed beef from the aging room that simply cannot be overlooked. Infused with Himalayan rock salt to concentrate the flavour and tenderise the meat, the beef is aged for a minimum of 21 days at a constant temperature and humidity. For a unique dining experience, the restaurant features a private dining room as well as chefs table. Location: St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort Open: Nightly 6.30 to 12am Contact: 02 498 8888

BALLOON ADVENTURES EMIRATES

04 2854949

Abu Dhabi is home to over 200 islands – here’s a few that are easily accessible to visitors. One of the largest natural islands in the emirate, Sir Bani Yas Island is located 240 kilometres from the mainland. A major attraction is the Arabian Wildlife Park, which takes up almost half the island and is home to more than 10,000 free-roaming animals. Ask your hotel concierge for advice on getting a boat across. Inhabited for over 7,000 years and once one of the Gulf's most important pearl-diving centres, Delma Island continues to maintain strong links to its maritime heritage. It also boasts some of the region’s earliest evidence of date-palm cultivation along with Mesopotamian pottery and finely flaked stone tools. Delma Island can be visited by ferry from Jebel Dhanna. Easily reached from Bateen Marina, Al Futaisi Island spreads across an area of around 50 sq km, most of which remains untouched, creating a very effective wildlife sanctuary. Discover the island by bike or take a mini-bus tour to see Gazelles running free, Ospreys nesting on outbreaks of rocks and to observe shy spiny tailed lizards called Dhubs.

1 Emirates Palace 2 Blue Grill, Yas Island Rotana

I grew up in Solihull in the Midlands, UK and have been based in Abu Dhabi for around four years now. Back in England I used to hate having to go to work in the dark and one of the first things that struck me about living here was all the light and sunshine. It’s still one of my favourite aspects of life in Abu Dhabi. As an active person I take advantage of the sunny Abu Dhabi weather by being outdoors as much as possible. My ideal weekend is spent by getting up early and heading out to sea for a quick wakeboarding session before having a picnic lunch on one of the islands. After that, if I’m not asleep by 10pm after a busy day in the open air, I go to Left Bank in the souq at Qaryat Al Beri to unwind. Soon, the Yas Waterworld themed water park will be open, which I’m really looking forward to. It’s about time! I also eat out a lot, particularly in Hanoi on Khalifa street, which serves good, authentic Vietnamese food. It’s perfect for a mid-week catch-up with

friends and the food is relatively light and healthy. If it’s a causal bite then I tend to choose Abu Dhabi Golf Club because it’s great value. For steaks, the Blue Grill at the Yas Island Rotana gets a big thumbs up from me and has a great selection of red wines. When my parents visit I usually want to treat them to a meal in a really glamorous venue, so we go for high tea at the Emirates Palace, which can be followed by a tour round the suites to walk off all those gold-adorned cakes!. During the warmer months I tend to watch a lot of DVD box sets on the television and then I look forward all summer to that first, cool day when I can cycle off all the crisps and chocolate I’ve eaten. It also means the concert season will start again and we can spend more time outdoors. A stroll around downtown Abu Dhabi is a great way to get a feel for the city and there’s always something going on to provide an interesting spectacle of life in the capital.
