A MAN INSPIRED BY HORSE RACING CHANGED WATCHMAKING FOREVER. In 1821, at a horse race in Paris, Nicolas Rieussec successfully tested his revolutionary invention that allowed time to be recorded to an accuracy of a fifth of a second. The chronograph was born. A tribute to a visionary man, the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Automatic is centred on the essence of his invention, the rotating disc technique. Monopusher chronograph,

WELCOME TO concierge Ramadan, the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic calendar, is a time when the emirate really comes alive with a feeling of spirituality and festivity. As a way to mark the occasion, lavish iftar suppers are held in five-star hotels across the emirate and guests have the opportunity to indulge in traditional Arabic feasts. To enjoy a taste of local culture, turn to page 62 to read about a variety of the city’s top iftars and what to expect from this bountiful occasion. In addition to being a holy time, August is also a time of great generosity, as Eid Al Fitr, the three-day celebration which falls immediately after the Holy Month (this year expected to start between August 17 and 19 depending on the sighting of the new moon), is marked by the giving of gifts. Whether you’re shopping for souvenirs for loved ones back home, or simply searching for a memento of your stay in Dubai, turn to page 26 to consider traditional Eid gifts. Alternatively, those looking for a larger investment of the sparkly kind can read all about rare rubies, outstanding sapphires and a plethora of other precious stones on page 30. While retail therapy may keep the adults happy, younger visitors will no doubt be looking for more energetic pastimes. If you’re after a once-in-a-lifetime experience, turn to page 56 and take a look at swimming with dolphins at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai. Those with little ones should look to page 50, where they can explore the city’s best child-themed attractions. For quick information on where to stop and what to visit, simply turn to The Guide. Once home to wealthy merchants whose ships used to ply the surrounding seas, Bastakiya, one of the oldest areas in the city, has been beautifully restored to something of its former glory. For a glimpse of how Dubai might have been and to experience a bohemian side of the city, the Bastakiya quarter should be top of your city itinerary. The area is made up of traditional courtyard houses distinguished by wind towers and separated by narrow alleyways. Local women in their billowing black abayas and men in their striking kandouras can often be seen walking the pathways.

Dubai is famous for its modern marvels, but there are many hidden hot spots which should also feature on visitor itineraries. For a slice of cultural heritage I always suggest a trip to the souks. Visitors should begin in the textile souk and then sail across the Dubai Creek on an abra (water taxi) where they will find the spice and gold souks. Whether it’s piquant Arabic seasoning you’re searching for or a dazzling array of jewellery, there is a lot on offer. Following these discoveries, learning about the local culture and the traditions of the region is a must. A tour of Jumeirah Mosque, one of the city’s most famous landmarks provides an insight into Islam, the official religion of the region. A lot of guests are keen to experience amazing views. I suggest a trip to the world’s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa. An observation deck, At the Top, which is perched on the 124th floor, provides stunning panoramic views of the city. Other great photo opportunities can be found at The Dubai Fountain, located at Downtown Dubai, Burj Al Arab, which is situated on Jumeirah Beach Road and Palm Jumeirah, where stunning architectural bastions such as Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, are located. Dubai is also famous for its nightlife scene and my top recommendations for wine bars are Cin Cin at The Fairmont Dubai, Vu’s Bar at Jumeirah Emirates Towers and Oscar’s Vine Society at Crown Plaza Dubai. If guests are only in town for the weekend, I suggest The Big Bus Tour. During the day, this hop-on, hop-off facility with a guided commentary allows visitors to get to the must-see places such as Dubai Museum and Palm Jumeirah. A desert safari is another popular activity because it showcases the beauty of the Arabian dunes both during the day and at nightfall. For information on tours, speak to your concierge.

To mark the end of Ramadan, the three-day celebration called Eid Al Fitr (the Festival of Fast Breaking) is expected to commence on August 19. On the day of Eid, Muslims gather early in the morning at mosques throughout the city to perform the Eid prayer.

Taste Shisha

During the Holy Month of Ramadan, immerse yourself in local culture by smoking f lavoured tobacco through a shisha or water pipe. This highly sociable pastime sees groups of friends meet and share f lavours such as double apple, grape and mint. More unusual varieties include raspberry cream, apple cinnamon and mango tango. Location: Served at most hotels and at many cafés. Time: After sunset. Price: Approximately AED60.

Dinner cruise Dubai is known for its idyllic restaurants, but if you’re really looking to make a splash, book in for a romantic evening dinner cruise. Whether you choose to enjoy a Dubai Creek cruise on a traditional dhow or floating restaurant, or board a private boat for two and explore the tranquil waters of Dubai Marina, the city waterways provide the perfect backdrop for an atmospheric meal. There’s a variety of cruise companies in Dubai, but our top recommendations include Bateaux Dubai and Al Mansour Dhow (pictured). Majestic minarets

From the superb skyscrapers to the magnificent manmade islands, Dubai has become synonymous with splendour. Yet while the views of Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah and Sheikh Zayed Road are extraordinary sights, if you’re looking to get away from the modern side of the city, there are many less extreme, but still dramatic spots to discover. With Islam as its official religion, it’s only natural that Dubai is abundant with mosques – the traditional place of worship for Muslims. The distinctive minarets, which rise like towers from the tops of the mosques, can be spotted across the city skyline, adding cultural flavour to the otherwise ultra-modern landscape. Jumeirah Mosque on Jumeirah Beach Road is one of the most beautiful mosques in the city and is known for its distinctive architecture. One of only a few mosques in Dubai open to non-Muslims the organisers run hour-long tours on Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesday and Thursdays from 10am. For more information call 04 3536666. 22

presents felt Eid Al Fitr (the Festival of Fast Breaking), is marked by the exchanging of presents. Concierge rounds up some of the most traditional gifts and souvenirs

Q The Holy Month of Ramadan is an occasion of great generosity as it concludes with Eid Al Fitr (the Festival of Fast Breaking), which is due to begin some time between August 17 and 19 depending on the sighting of the new moon. The Prophet Mohammad said: “Exchange gifts, as that will lead to increasing your love to one another.” Therefore, Eid is a time to show charity to others and bestow presents on friends, family and loved ones. Typical gifts are oudh, gold, Arabic sweets and Middle Eastern art. However, while this custom is observed by Muslims, the giving of Eid gifts isn’t exclusively reserved for followers of Islam and visitors to Dubai can also partake. Imparting a traditional gift not only shows loved ones you’ve thought about them on your travels, but the right present enables you to share experiences with them. Dubai, for all its modernity, remains rooted in tradition and culture, making it the perfect place to pick up a special something for family and friends back home. Whether you opt for aromatic oudh or a precious purchase of gold, there are a variety of gifts with which to fill your suitcase.

Oudh Take a stroll through the malls and souks in Dubai and the chances are you’ll catch a whiff of the heady scent of oudh. A resin found in agarwood, oudh is often burned with the tree’s bark, creating an aromatic smoke that drifts through the air. In its most common form it is presented as a strong-smelling oil sold in miniaturesized bottles. Designed to be dabbed on the skin as cologne, Arabic perfumeries enjoy a roaring trade with many boutiques operating within the city’s malls and shopping areas. Some vendors stock ready-made blends, while others can also tailor a perfume to suit. Then it’s simply a matter of choosing a scintillating aroma for a lucky loved one.

Packed full of energy and highly nutritious, dates are a popular gift during Ramadan as they are one of the most common foods used to break a fast

Sweets Never has the saying ‘sweets for my sweet’ been more appropriate than in the UAE where a huge percentage of the population has a sweet tooth. Around every corner you will find sweet shop after chocolate shop after cupcake shop. The ‘original’ sweet in the region, however, is the date, which is grown in abundance in the UAE’s oases. Packed full of energy and highly nutritious, dates are a popular gift during Ramadan as they are one of the most common foods used to break the day’s fast. There are many shops selling a variety of dates, including an extravagant chocolate-coated variety, but one of the best is Bateel, which can be found in malls and modern souks throughout the city. If dates are not to your liking, why not take home a box of Arabic baklava and nougat. Syrupy sweet with typical local flavours of pistachio and rose, the treats are sure to be a hit with family and friends. Chocoholics aren’t forgotten either and the UAE is home to the first producer of camel-milk chocolate. Said to be low in lactose and more nutritious than cow’s milk, Al Nassma camel milk chocolate could prove to be a healthier alternative. The chocolate comes in standard bars of varying sizes as well as cute camel shapes and a boxed ‘camel caravan’.

Shisha Smoking shisha, or flavoured tobacco through a water pipe, is a popular pastime in Dubai. Enjoyed by men and women in groups and couples, shisha has been a tradition in the Middle East for centuries. The tobacco is available in flavours such as apple, grape or mint together with much more unusual tastes such as cola and chocolate. The water pipes come in various sizes and colours and can be bought in souvenir and traditional gift shops throughout the emirate. Less expensive versions are also stocked in many supermarkets. Choose your favourite colour and design and select a few flavours of tobacco. Be sure to pack the pipe with lots of padding for the journey home.

Art Whether it’s for investment purposes or to decorate a home, a piece of art can serve as a useful and beautiful memento from Dubai. There are numerous galleries throughout the city displaying and selling works by established Emirati artists as well as pieces by up-and-coming young art stars. While choosing a piece of art is a deeply

personal task, the staff at the various galleries dotted around the city will be able to offer information on the artists, their backgrounds and their work. Another popular treasure to take home is Arabic calligraphy, in the form of verses of the Qur’an on canvas or jewellery. Names written in Arabic and worn as pendants have also become popular UAE souvenirs.

Gold One of the world’s most precious metals, gold has long been traded in tax-free Dubai. The city’s shopping malls are home to many reputable local jewellers which stock everything from delicate earrings and rings to elaborate pieces. For a more ‘local’ shopping experience, visit the gold souk in Deira or the Gold & Diamond Park on Sheikh Zayed Road where you can haggle with vendors over your desired treasure. If you can’t find what you want, simply ask to have it made. Alternatively, purchase a souvenir gold bar from the gold vending machine in the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa. The Gold to Go machine can be found on the 124th floor At the Top viewing platform and on the ground level. Machines can also be found in Galeries Lafayette at The Dubai Mall and at the entrance to Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates.

precious assets Rubies, emeralds and sapphires are more than just dazzling – they could help savvy investors grow their wealth

Q w o r d s b y c at h e r i n e l a n g l e y

In the current economic climate we have to innovate to accumulate. With this in mind, new avenues are emerging in the financial world where savvy investors are now looking to diversify from traditional investments, such as stocks, shares, bonds and funds to somewhat more attractive projects. While valuable artwork, property and precious metals have played a part in financial portfolios for a long time, more recently a growing number of speculators are looking towards coloured gemstones in order to grow their wealth. “While gemstones vary in value, dealers speculate that prices for high-quality stones are up by 50 percent and have doubled in the past two years,” says Ben Khadra, chairman of Levant Group, the main distributor of Leviev Jewellery. “Average-class stones are up by 20 to 25 percent in the last year and certain semi-precious stones are now priced as if they were precious.” With this in mind, some experts speculate that coloured stones are catching up with diamonds in terms of status and value, with many shoppers opting to buy ruby, emerald and sapphire-set pieces over diamond equivalents. According to Ivan Zakharchenko, Middle East ceo of Maximilian, the reason for the increase in value is mainly due to shortages. “Good quality coloured stones are hard to find at the best of times because the outfits digging for them tend to be tiny compared with the diamond giants. This, coupled with political instability, means that there is a shortage.” Zakharchenko is referring to limited exports from countries such as Madascagar and Myanmar (Burma), which have suffered political instability in recent years. “In 2008 America banned imports from then Junta-ruled Myanmar, a major source of rubies, while Madagascar has sapphire deposits which aren’t being utlised because of political issues.” The other reason can be attributed to culture, with fast-growing economies such as China and India purchasing valuable gemstones because of the religious significance they hold.

Choose wisely For this reason it’s not surprising that investors are now setting their sights on multi-coloured assets. However, investing in gemstones is complicated because stones vary hugely in quality. Difficulty also occurs because the colour is the dominant feature of the stone and as such it is prioritised over cut, clarity and carat in the valuing process, making grading more subjective than the grading of diamonds. “When it comes to coloured stones, the intensity and purity of the colour is where the value lies. Intense bright colours are the marketplace ideal. The problem is that deciding just how dark or light a stone should be is subjective,” says Zakharchenko.

For this reason experts recommend only buying stones with a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America, which is the most widely regarded and recognised gem laboratory in the world. Another consideration is exclusivity and while rarity often equals profit, there are some exceptions. “Sometimes the geological rarity of a gem can jeopardise its commercial value,” says Khadra. “Take tsavorite garnet, which is much rarer than emerald and sometimes more beautiful. Yet because of its rarity, it cannot compete with emeralds in terms of the consumer perception of its value.” For this reason Khadra advises investing in more popular gems such as sapphires, tanzanite, emeralds and rubies. Zakharchenko agrees. “On the basis of research conducted by leading world banks we know that sales of rubies, emeralds and sapphires are on the rise from private buyers and jewellery companies.”

has always been a leader in introducing customers to the hidden allure of lesser-known gemstones,” says Ghada El-Kari, Merchandising Director at Tiffany & Co. “Tanzanite, kunzite, tsavorite and morganite stones feature prominently in our 2012 collections and we’ve received great feedback.” Of course, while gemstones have risen in value and actually enjoy greater historic stability than the stock market, nothing is without risk. Gem prices have jumped and slumped before, with emerald prices hitting an all-time low just over a decade ago after a surge in flawed stones hit the market and sent prices tumbling. However, the benefit of investing in gems is that even if prices fall substantially you can safely assume that a precious ruby ring or an emerald pendant will always be a statement of style.

A touch of glamour In addition to cultural, political and supply issues, the gemstone industry is also affected by fashion with prices rising accordingly. While coloured gem jewellery has always been considered ‘en vogue’, recent celebrity endorsements have given the market a boost. The Duchess of Cambridge’s highly prized engagement ring has done for sapphires what Elizabeth Taylor did for diamonds and with celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts and Julianne Moore all recently sporting multihued treasures, the gems become even more desirable. Bulgari, Boucheron, Maximilian, Van Cleef & Arpels, Leviev and even diamond powerhouse Tiffany & Co. are just a few of the high-profile jewellery brands to have incorporated colourful stones into their latest collections and it’s a move that has proved popular with consumers. “Tiffany & Co.

Oris Coste Limited Edition Cenote Series

B.R.M Triroto

In honour of the death-defying 150-metre dive undertaken by Carlos Coste, Oris has produced this stand-out edition watch that boasts a number of high-performance features. In addition to the Coste diver log, it also includes a number of indicators with superluminova inlay for optimum visibility and is water-resistant up to an incredible 500 metres.

A favourite with F1 enthusiasts, the Triroto, designed by Bernard Richards Manufacture, features a unique device that protects the watch’s movement during intense acceleration. The mechanism’s principle is to absorb the kinetic energy through three small rotors. The smaller rotors keep the principle rotor in place and as a result, absorb movements that might be caused by intense acceleration.

This 42-millimetre, quartz-movement chronograph features a diamond-tough brushed black ceramic bezel with an eye-catching silver tachymeter scale. The three black chronograph counters measure to 1/10th of a second with the hour counter at 6 o’clock, the minutes counter at 9 o’clock and the second counter at 3 o’clock.

The HydroConquest is ideal for divers and enthusiasts of the open seas. Fitted with the L667 automatic self-winding mechanical movement, the watch produces 28,800 alternations per hour and offers a power reserve of 46 hours. Its abyss-black dial, embellished with a ‘big 12’ and superluminova luminescent indices, shows the date, hour and minutes and has a sub-dial for the seconds at 9 o’clock and the counters of the chrono mechanism: 30 minutes at 12 o’clock and 12 hours at 6 o’clock. No matter where you are in Dubai, one glimpse of the city skyline and you’ll spot at least a dozen architectural wonders that have made their way into the record books. Whether it’s Burj Khalifa which, among its many accolades, takes the coveted prize as the world’s tallest tower, or Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse (pictured) which secured its place in history when it opened the longest grandstand in the world, you can’t go far without encountering history in the making. Since 1978 when the Dubai World Trade Centre was completed at a height of 149 metres, Dubai has embarked on an amazing adventure of groundbreaking architectural excellence. Working from a blank canvas, the emirate has grown at break-neck speed, producing some of the most awe-inspiring structures in the world and allowing the skyline to map the city’s historic rise. From the well-heeled charm of The Gate, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) to the historical magic of Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, the sky really is the limit in this town.

Dubai World Trade Centre One of the oldest multi-storey buildings in the UAE, Dubai’s World Trade Centre (DWTC) was originally built when the heart of the city was centred around the Creek. Unsurprisingly, at the time of its construction, Sheikh Zayed Road was little more than a twolane highway so the DWTC was considered an ‘out of town’ location. The building was the brainchild of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (ruler of Dubai from 1958 to 1990) who, on a visit to the US, was inspired by the Twin Towers. His idea was to create a place where exhibitions could be run alongside nearby apartments that would cater for the visitors. The building was designed by architect John Harris. As the story goes, Harris received news that Sheikh Rashid wanted to commission him for the project moments before he boarded a flight from Dubai to London. “My suitcase had been checked in and a voice said, ‘Sheikh Rashid wants to see you’. Of course my suitcase went one way and I went the other.” Harris subsequently spent the next seven years working on the project. Originally constructed in grey concrete, Sheikh Rashid was unimpressed by the finished structure and ordered that it be painted white. The Dubai World Trade Centre was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1979. Now one of the country’s more modestly sized skyscrapers by comparison, it remains a milestone in Dubai’s history and has its image emblazoned on every AED100 bank note.

At a height of 360 metres, Almas is Dubai’s third tallest building after Burj Khalifa and Emirates Towers

Almas Tower Almas Tower (meaning diamond in Arabic) is the jewel in Jumeirah Lake Towers’ crown… quite literally. As well as being named after the precious stone, it is also home to a fair few, as the two-storey podium at the base of the tower is where you’ll find the Dubai Diamond Exchange, Dubai Gems Club, The Dubai Pearl Exchange and the Kimberly Press Certification offices. Standing at a height of 360 metres with 74 levels, Almas is Dubai’s third tallest building

after Burj K halifa and Emirates Towers. It is famed for its unusual structure, which creates the effect of two towers literally merging together. The south-facing structure is clad in a high-performance finish to keep the interior cool, while the north-facing tower includes more transparent cladding to maximise the ambient northern light. Construction commenced in 2005 and it took four years to complete, with the final cladding being added to the apex in 2009.

Burj Khalifa Standing at a heady height of 828 metres, with 160 storeys, Burj Khalifa is the world’s tallest building. Construction began in 2004, led by architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and the doors were officially opened in January 2010. Around this time rumours began to circulate that the tower was home to the world’s highest mosque, on the 158 th f loor, but to set the record straight, while the claims of the highest observation deck (124th floor), restaurant

(122nd floor) and swiming pool (76th), are true, the ‘highest mosque on Earth’ story is no more than an urban myth. Fiction aside, the facts are just as mesmerising. At the peak of construction, 12,000 workers and contractors were on site every day. Between them they spent 22 million man hours pouring more than 330,000 cubic metres of concrete and hauling 39,000 tonnes of steel. Already recognised as an iconic building the world over, it also featured in the Hollywood blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club Long before Dubai was known for its cutting-edge architecture the iconic Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club enjoyed a place on the city horizon. The project was awarded to local architect Brian Johnson of Godwin Austen Johnson in 1990. A Dubai resident since 1975, Johnson used his extensive knowledge of the region to design a structure which echoed Arabic culture. The building was inspired by the lateen sail of the Arabian dhow. “My partners and I have a particular approach to the design of buildings which celebrates the local traditions and culture while integrating modern ideas and technologies,” says Johnson. Johnson has watched Dubai emerge from the desert. “The Dubai World Trade Centre was only part constructed when I arrived.” Despite the area being relatively undeveloped at the time, Johnson always believed that Dubai had potential. “Sheikh Rashid and his son Sheikh Mohammed were always thinking of new ideas and it was a great time to be involved with establishing the basic infrastructure.”

Meydan Malaysian native Teo A Khing was the chief architect behind Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse – one of Dubai’s most unique structures. Commissioned in 2005 by Meydan chairman, Saeed Al Tayer, Khing was invited to submit a proposal and came up with the futuristic design we see today. Meydan was the first significant project for the Asian architect and with the completion deadline brought forward by a year, in order to be ready for the 15th anniversary of the Dubai World Cup, the pressure was on. Khing rose to the occasion and delivered on time, at half the cost the owners had estimated. The racecourse district of Meydan City is spread over 67 million square

feet with a 2,400-metre turf racetrack and a 1,750-metre synthetic dirt course. Appropriately, ‘Meydan’ means ‘gathering place’ in Arabic and with room for a crowd of 120,000 it is certainly that. Spanning 1.6 kilometres, the grandstand is the longest in the world, with room for 20,000 seated spectators and 60,000 standing. The way the grandstand has been designed means that there is an uninterrupted view of a full five furlongs of course. Meydan also provides the world’s first trackside hotel, where 95 percent of the 285 suites have a racecourse view. Meydan chairman Saeed Al Tayer comments: “Meydan is Sheikh Mohammed’s gift to the world. It’s a defining moment in the sport’s global history.”

The Gate, DIFC The showpiece in Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), The Gate is home to the state’s stock exchange as well as the DIFC Authority and Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA). Global architecture firm Gensler was the brains behind the landmark structure (as well as a fair few other buildings on the 100-acre site). “We had to create an environment where a senior banker would want to locate,” says Gensler’s lead planner for Europe and the Middle East Ian Mulcahey. “That’s how our idea of a ‘banking resort’ was conceived, with a vital sense of place and a well-judged underlying framework.” With its angular arch design, the architects took inspiration from world-famous structures like the Arc de Triomphe, but the geometric and contemporary style makes for a unique addition to the architectural scene of Dubai. The Gate was the first building to be completed in the DIFC complex and now provides more than 46,000 square metres of office space. With the searing Dubai summers, the building was designed with a double skin and a specially crafted vented-curtain system to maximise natural light while keeping the building cool even during the hot summer months.

The Index Located within Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), The Index is one of the first towers in Dubai that used architecture to tackle the region’s hot climate. Award-winning Norman Foster + Partners designed The Index and successfully combined environmental strategy without losing any of the luxury that Dubai residents have become accustomed to. With 45 years of international experience building iconic landmarks, from the reconstruction of Wembley Stadium to London’s famous ‘Gherkin’ building, 2010 was the year for Foster and his partners to make their mark in the Middle East. With a desire to clearly express the structural system of the building, 25 floors of column-free office space are separated from residential levels by a glazed sky-lobby. Over the building’s 80 storeys, there are also 520 luxury apartments, a dramatic quadruple-height foyer, a landscaped plinth level and a restaurant, pool and health club. The orientation of the building gives office workers and residents spectacular views over the desert, coastline and the entire financial centre. On the south elevation, all windows are sheltered from direct sunlight by shades and the core of the building is designed to absorb heat, so that even in the height of summer the building will not get hotter than 28 degrees Celsius. Construction of The Index commenced in 2005 and was completed in 2010, winning the award for Best Tall Building in the Middle East and Africa, presented by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

Dubai Metro When Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) released a brief for the architectural requirements for the Dubai Metro stations they stated: “The station architecture shall have an aesthetic, form and external appearance which is unique, innovative, iconic and reflecting Dubai’s identity and character.” It was leading international architectural firm Aedas that had the skill and vision to fulfil the criteria and now 49 metro stations, two depots and operation centres have made a dramatic impact on the architectural landscape of Dubai. It is the most advanced transport project ever undertaken in a city and the emirate has certainly benefited from the outcome. The Red Line was completed in 2009, starting at Rashidiya, Mirdif, running through Dubai International Airport terminals one and three and stretching all the way to the Jebel Ali Free Zone. The Green Line was completed in 2010 and runs from Al Qusais to Al Jaddaf near Business Bay Crossing. Millions of people are shuttled around Dubai each year by the Dubai Metro, easing road congestion and providing an environmentally friendly transport solution.

Themed on the journeys of a fictional character named Juha who, legend has it, washed up on an enchanted island after being shipwrecked, the resort is designed to look like a tropical oasis. As the story goes Juha, along with his family and crew created the rides you see at Wild Wadi. While the tale is not contemporary, the rides certainly are. Having undergone a revamp in recent months Wild Wadi now boasts a selection of new slides including Tantrum Alley, which incorporates two large downhill waterslides and three exciting tornadoes and in between the Wipeout and Riptide flowriders, there is no end of fun to be had. KidZania What: ‘When I grow up, I want to be a... fireman.’ Well, now he can, just like she can be a nurse with a fancy stethoscope, because KidZania gives children the chance to live out their dreams while also learning about how the real world works. A concept originating in Mexico, KidZania has proved an instant success in the UAE. The premise is simple and ingenious. It’s a city run by children (under discreet adult supervision) and aspiring juniors can sing like rock stars, direct movies and even perform ‘open-heart surgery’ if they wish. Everything from managing a hotel concierge desk to learning to fly a jumbo jet is available. Currently there are 70 different roles to choose from and far from being a fantasy land, this experience is a clever concept, which has seen KidZania teaming up with regional corporations and brands, in order to reinforce social and educational teaching in the name of fun. Who: Four- to 15-year-olds. Children over 12 can be left unattended in KidZania. Dubai Ice Rink What: Whether your little ones are skilled skaters or beginners on blades, there are few things children love more than donning a pair of skates and gliding across the ice. The Olympic-sized ice rink at The Dubai Mall provides hours of family fun and, with a full programme of events for all abilities, including two-hour disco sessions complete with DJ and nightclub-style lighting, tots, tweens and teens will feel cool regardless of their skating skills. In addition to ordinary skating times, the rink also hosts the Emirates Hockey League Cup games on weekend mornings from 8.15am. For those who don’t wish to attempt a sub-zero power play themselves and would rather sit back and watch the slippery action, spectator seating is available around the rink. SPLASH COURSE Reach out to these beautiful creatures at Dolphin Bay, Atlantis The Palm, Dubai

Q A rite of passage for many, interactive dolphin experiences have become popular the world over and Dubai, which is famed for its funfilled attractions, is no different. Having opened its doors in 2008, Dolphin Bay at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, has become one of the city’s most favoured attractions, with visitors queuing up on a daily basis in order to enjoy hands-on encounters with these sociable mammals. Dolphin Bay is the largest coastal dolphin habitat in the world, spanning 4.5 hectares with three interaction pods and is home to a family of dolphins – mostly the Indo-Pacific bottlenose species. The friendly creatures participate in the interactions on a rotational basis, depending on their health, mood and the type of interaction, giving visitors the chance to get up close and personal. Concierge visited Dolphin Bay to spend some time with these intelligent creatures.

57

Dolphin days The session begins with a lesson about dolphins and how t hey are t rained, followed by a brief run-through of the day’s programme. After that it’s over to the lagoon and that’s when the real fun begins. Kitted out in the wetsuits and lifejackets provided by Dolphin Bay (although you can bring your own), we are taken to a briefing room and taught about dolphin behaviour, training methods, the types of dolphins at the facility and some of the activities the guests will experience.

It takes approximately two years of training before a dolphin is ready to work with the public. The trainers at Dolphin Bay use positive reinforcement so the dolphins are rewarded with food or affection when they perform a task correctly. The same philosophy applies when the animals display behaviour that is not desired. Rather than chastising them, they are simply ignored and not rewarded. Therefore, they soon learn that acceptable behaviour equals rewards. During the briefing we also learn about dolphin physiology, such as where to find

From the classroom to the lagoon, groups are split into two with some people opting for the Atlantis Dolphin Encounter, (which takes place in waist-deep water) and others trying the Atlantis Dolphin Adventure, which is held in water three metres deep. Stepping into the water – which is cool, but the perfect temperature for dolphins – we are asked to line up with hands palm down on the surface of the water. Cathy, one of 26 dolphins at the park, glides just beneath the surface on her back, giving guests the chance to feel her soft spotty belly.

trainer for a fishy treat. It’s been said that dolphins are more intelligent than humans and from this encounter it’s easy to see how that could be true. The most anticipated activity is taking a ride with the dolphin as she swims on her back to the shore. Cathy glides up slowly so that one by one, members of the group whose arms are out to the side can grab hold of her pectoral fins and hold on for the belly ride. While this is without doubt the highlight of the experience, the interaction isn’t over. After each guest has enjoyed a ride, Cathy gets in a few more belly rubs before showing how much she loves to jump out of the water, especially when it means fish. For anyone who loves animals, this experience is a real treat. The chance to get up close to dolphins and interact with them in the water is something to be remembered for a long time to come.

The dolphin trainer explains that just like humans, there are many features that help identify each dolphin. These include spots on the belly, which are similar to freckles; the shape of their head, or melon; the shape of their rostrum (snout); and any scars, in addition to their physical size. Just like humans, dolphins come in all shapes and sizes. After the introduction and belly rub, it’s our chance to get up close and personal with Cathy, who obligingly offers a hug and kiss to each of the group members. Those feeling brave can return the favour by giving her a kiss on the rostrum, making a perfect photo opportunity. Then it’s time for Cathy to show off her moves as guests provide encouragement by singing songs, the most popular being I Like to Move It. One of the younger dolphins gets a turn in the limelight and demonstrates a spin. Meanwhile Cathy goes on with the show, spinning one of the group in a circle. On hearing the whistle, she darts back to the

The habitat provides seven resident pools, shelter from inclement weather and almost 26 million litres of seawater. The deep water interaction takes place in water up to three metres and is reserved for competent swimmers. The shallow water interaction is held in waist-deep water.

Taste First date

With their dark, waxy skin and soft, sweet flesh, dates were sold extensively along the trade routes of yesteryear and played an important role in the lives of the Arabian Bedouin. Today, dates are used as a gesture of hospitality to greet guests, to break the daily fast during Ramadan and as a sweet souvenir to take home to friends and family.

After Dark Delights A world of kibbeh, kofta and kebabs awaits at lavish iftar buffets hosted by restaurants across Dubai as the emirate embraces Ramadan

Q Those with a penchant for Arabic food can look forward to an array of lavish iftar buffets this month as the emirate sees the continuation of the Holy Month of Ramadan. With an assortment of traditional Middle Eastern cuisine, including hummous, grilled meats, freshly baked breads and soups, iftar is a true feast for the senses. While these full-scale dining experiences are opulent affairs, iftar represents much more than a hearty indulgence. Seeking to become closer to God by following a set of religious and spiritual observations, the most challenging being abstaining from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset, Muslims break their daily fast at a sunset iftar. Traditionally the meal starts with dates and milk after which an assortment of dishes such as cold mezze, fattoush, kibbeh and ouzi are served. With a plethora of five-star hotels serving iftar throughout August, it’s difficult to know which feast to book first. For a nudge in the right direction read on for our top selection of some of the most delicious iftar buffets in town.

Na3Na3 Tucked away in The Address Dubai Mall is the rather unassuming Na3Na3 (pronounced na-na). Awash in cool creams and clean lines, at first glance there are few visual clues to indicate that Na3Na3 is an Arabic restaurant, but sample the food and it becomes clear why this sleekly designed buffet eatery is fast gaining a reputation as one of Dubai’s most popular dining spots. With Ramadan in full swing, diners have the opportunity to savour classic Arabic dishes such as ouzi, kibbeh and mezze, while enjoying the warm hospitality of the staff. While all the buffet options are tantalising, the grilled kofta, which comes perfectly cooked and full of flavour stands out as a must-try dish. Similarly the fluffy saj bread is a delicious accompaniment perfect for scooping up the wide assortment of mezze. Al Hadheerah This magical, open-air Arabic restaurant is a feast for the senses with a lavish buffet beautifully displayed in the style of a traditional souk. During Ramadan visitors can indulge in an extensive selection of hot and cold mezze, freshly baked bread from Arabic bread ovens and live-cooking stations featuring seafood, fish, beef, chicken and lamb. All are cooked the oldfashioned Arabic way using wood-fired ovens, charcoal grills and spit roasts. The restaurant’s décor recreates the magic of an Arabian fort with natural stone, rock walls and a sunken seating area. With scenes straight out of an Arabian legend, Al Hadheerah perfectly captures the spirit of Ramadan. In addition to a delicious offering of Middle Eastern fare, visitors can look forward to henna artists, singers and a falcon display. There are also Bedouin horsemen and a camel caravan roaming the dunes overlooking the restaurant together with horse rides for children. Al Iwan For breaking fast in style or simply trying a traditional iftar, what better way than at Burj Al Arab? Al Iwan, the hotel’s Arabic restaurant is hosting iftar every day during Ramadan and visitors can expect a full Arabic buffet, including cold mezze and dates on each table. As you might expect from a restaurant at the iconic Burj Al Arab, the décor at Al Iwan is bold, gold and gloriously grand. This sets the scene for a dazzling evening and while the iftar selection is extremely enticing, it’s also

traditional, simple and devoid of any of the pretensions one might expect from such a luxurious restaurant. From the lamb mushroom moufaraka to the deliciously tender lamb biryani, the generous melt-in-the-mouth selection has a down-to-earth and uncomplicated air about it, which is perfect for the month of Ramadan. Similarly, there’s a selection of drinks on offer, including traditional Ramadan tipples. Location: Burj Al Arab / Price: AED290 per person / Timings: Daily sunset to 7.45pm Contact: 04 3017600

IN THE KNOW Daily fasting from sunrise to sunset is required of Muslims throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan. Traditionally, those partaking break their fasts with an iftar feast at sunset, enjoying a lavish spread of soups, salads, meats and desserts. Following the iftar, a sohour is laid out. This is the meal served in the early hours, just before sunrise and is usually the last time a Muslim eats or drinks again that day until the sun sets that evening.

Admittedly, it doesn’t boast the Arabic associations one might expect of a restaurant serving iftar, but international dining venue Celsius at the Radisson Royal Hotel Dubai has excelled at commemorating Ramadan. From the soft scent of spice as visitors walk through the door, to the affability of the welcoming staff, the atmosphere is as warm and fragrant as the coffee and the food is tastier still. Break your fast with sweet dates before enjoying a selection of freshly prepared soups. Live-cooking stations serving an assortment of mouthwatering Middle Eastern choices offer a wealth of flavours, while the restaurant décor has been given a facelift in order to underline the Arabian heritage of the occasion. After iftar, save some space for sohour at Al Mersat, where you can choose from an à la carte menu offering mezze, tea, coffee and a selection of delicious Arabic sweets. Café Arabesque While the dress code is casual, everything else at Café Arabesque, from the twinkling candle lights to the minimalist décor, displays a certain elegance. A distinctly chic spot to enjoy iftar, this restaurant takes inspiration from the Levant region, with a heavy emphasis on grilled meats and kebab dishes. Expect an array of culinary delights from Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. The deserts are also a tantalising treat and, as well as Arabic specialities such as kunafa (a sugary-tasting pastry dish), those not so familiar with Arabic puddings can opt for sweet staples such as cheesecake, mousse and mixed fruit.

For a quiet and leisurely shopping experience, visit Dubai’s malls throughout the week to avoid the weekend crowds. When shopping in the traditional souks, be prepared to haggle. Vendors expect it. Before buying gold or visiting the Gold Souk, find out the current market price of gold from your hotel concierge to ensure that you do not pay over the odds. Some malls specialise in particular kinds of shopping, for example, home furnishings, luxury labels or high-street brands. Grand designs

04 3666546

Contrary to popular belief, a camel does not store water in its hump. It is in fact a mound of fatty tissue from which the animal draws energy when food is scarce. A camel can last five to seven days with little or no food and water and can lose a quarter of its body weight without impairing its physical abilities. Although camels can withstand severe dehydration, a large animal can drink as much as 100 litres (21 gallons) in 10 minutes. Such an amount would kill another mammal, but the camel’s unique metabolism enables it to store the water in its bloodstream. Camel’s milk is much more nutritious than cow’s milk. It is lower in fat and lactose and higher in potassium, iron and vitamin C. Drunk fresh, the warm frothy liquid is heavy and sweet. The Bedouin name for the one-hump dromedary or Arabian camel is ‘Ata Allah’ which translates to ‘God’s gift’.

Museums

Intricate henna designs are legendary in this region and around the world. Archaeological evidence of henna at Neolithic sites, circa 9000BCE, as well as paintings on pottery, fabric and paper, show elaborate designs worn by women at weddings and festivals. Today, henna is used much more frequently and it has become popular for visitors to indulge in the ancient art, with many henna artists practising their skills at historical tourist stops, such as the Heritage Village and in Bastakiya. Hands and feet are the most common body parts decorated and depending on how often the area gets wet, the design can last up to a couple of weeks.

AL BADIA GOLF CLUB DUBAI FESTIVAL CITY

Struggling to find a tee time or looking for an alternative challenge? The UAE has other excellent courses to feed your need. The Abu Dhabi Golf Club (02 5588990) is managed by Troon Golf and located just ten minutes from the airport. This superb, 27-hole championship course has excellent facilities and a distinctive clubhouse shaped like a falcon. The course itself is pleasantly tough with many water hazards to negotiate. Also in the capital is the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club (02 5578000), designed by Gary Player and the Gulf’s only ocean course. Heading north, Tower Links (07 2278555) in Ras Al Khaimah is a tricky 18-hole course that meanders through a mangrove swamp and has the Hajar Mountains as a backdrop. The back nine holes are also floodlit, meaning you can make the most of your journey.

BOOKING ADVICE

During Ramadan, some hotels may alter their dining hours. It's best to call ahead to double check or ask your concierge for advice.

Sunset to sunrise Daily fasting from sunrise to sunset is required of Muslims throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan. Traditionally, those partaking break their fast with an Iftar feast at sunset, enjoying a lavish spread of soups, salads, meats and desserts. Following the iftar, a sohour is laid out. This is the meal served in the early hours, just before sunrise and is usually the last time a Muslim eats or drinks again that day until the sun sets the following evening.

Richard Haddon, General Manager at Movida Dubai shares his tips on how to have a stylish stay in the city

1

I’m originally from Wolverhampton in the UK, but moved to Dubai six months ago after a friend got in touch and asked if I would be interested in the position of general manager at Movida Dubai. The whole process was very fast. I had a meeting with the owners of Movida London that day and was on a plane to the UAE just 72 hours later. Thankfully I’ve settled into the Dubai life quickly and I haven’t looked back. At weekends I’m most likely to be found at Nasimi Beach at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai. With breathtaking views of Dubai’s skyline and comfy couches on the beach, this is the perfect place to wile away the afternoon, while listening as the DJ spins the decks. During the evening Zuma is my favourite spot for dinner with friends. A group of us always make sure we book a table in the lounge where there is a good party vibe. Hakkasan also has a superb menu. For a traditional Sunday roast I head to Nineteen, at The Address Montgomerie Dubai. It provides a real taste of home and the views across the golf course and the Dubai Marina towers in the distance are spectacular.

When I have guests in town I take them to Ski Dubai, the first indoor ski slope in the region. The resort recently welcomed a colony of gentoo and king penguins, which is a really fun experience for visitors. Another great guest activity is a visit to Aquaventure at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, the city’s biggest water park. Make sure you brave the Shark Attack ride, which will send you down a vertical drop and sliding through a shark-filled lagoon. During the year there is a variety of exciting events, but my favourite is the Dubai World Cup, which sees the world’s best horses, jockeys and trainers competing in the richest horse race on the planet. So many people jet into town for the occasion and it’s great to see everyone dressed up in their finery. The shopping in Dubai is amazing. There is an array of brands and The Dubai Mall in Downtown Dubai, which has over 1,000 stores, is a one-stop shop for everything you might need. The Tom Ford boutique is my personal favourite. I also enjoy shopping in Harvey Nicholls at Mall of the Emirates, which has its fair share of well-known designer brands.
