Breguet, the innovator.

Invention of the Breguet balance spring, 1795 The balance spring gives time rhythm and sets its rate – the key to a watch’s precision. With its many patented innovations, the Tradition 7047PT with fusee tourbillon pushes the limits of precision time-keeping by combining the accuracy of the Breguet balance-spring’s terminal curve, conceived in 1795, and the anti-magnetic properties of silicon. History is still being written ...

The souks A visit to some of Abu Dhabi’s souks is one of the best ways to experience the cultural side of the capital. Particularly popular is the venerable Gold Souk, one of the city’s oldest attractions and an excellent place to purchase gold and other jewellery, or just to soak up the bustling atmosphere of a traditional Arabian marketplace. There’s also the Fish Souk at Mina Zayed and the Al Mina Fruit and Vegetable Market, opposite. Outside the city centre, there’s Al Ain Souk, Souk Al Bawadi and Souk Al Zafarana. More recently, a couple of modern souks have sprung up in Abu Dhabi, including the Souk Qaryat Al Beri, which offers a waterfront dining and shopping experience and the Souk at Central Market (pictured), where shoppers can browse stalls selling traditional and regional products such as carpets, jewellery and antiques.

EXPERIENCE Arabian Nights

Hidden between the dunes in the heart of the UAE desert lies the Arabian Nights Heritage Village. Opened just this month, it’s a traditional-style Arabian village offering visitors a taste of life as a Bedouin and a peaceful escape from the pace of the modern city. Choose between barasti huts and sandstone bungalows, modelled on Emirati homes before the construction boom or, for a complete liberation from urban life, sleep on the floor in traditional Bedouin tents. For a more luxurious night’s rest, there are rooms in the wind towers, with all necessary amenities, although televisions and phones are banned from the site, which aims to provide guests with an opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the desert and get a real sense of Emirati heritage. Prices vary according to accommodation type. Where: Khatim. Contact: 02 6769990.

TASTE

Dine around The culinary scene in Abu Dhabi gets more diverse by the minute with an ever-growing number of restaurants and dining experiences to choose between. One of the newest concepts, however, eliminates the need to select just one restaurant or cuisine and allows guests to dine around the hotel and experience several restaurants in one night. At Emirates Palace, diners can enjoy an aperitif at Havana Club, second course at Mezlai, main course at Mezzaluna and dessert at Le Café for AED500 or AED650 including alcoholic beverages. A culinary safari at Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri begins with a welcome drink in the Lobby Lounge followed by a choice of seafood starters at Pearls & Caviar. Diners then move on to Hoi An for traditional Vietnamese cuisine before heading to Shang Palace and then on to Bord Eau for more main dishes. The evening is rounded off at the dessert station in Sofra Bld (pictured), before drawing to a close with a relaxing shisha at the Pool Bar & Restaurant. Price: AED555. Contact: 02 6909000.

An excellent way to see the sights in Abu Dhabi is to hire a driver, which can be easily done through your hotel concierge. Start your tour with Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the biggest mosques in the world. Follow it with the Heritage Village for an insight into Emirati history and then Madinat Zayed Gold Souk and the Souk at Central Market. Manarat al Saadiyat is a large visitor centre that provides an interactive narrative of the vision for the island, currently expected to offer the largest single concentration of premier cultural institutions following construction of the Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a performing arts centre and maritime museum. The capital also boasts plenty of excellent sporting venues such as the Saadiyat Beach Golf Course, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and a driving experience on the race track at Yas Marina Circuit. For the best shopping, try the luxury boutiques in Avenue at Etihad Towers, or the first floor of Marina Mall for Roberto Cavalli, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Burberry and many others. You can also visit Miraj Islamic Art Centre for more extraordinary items, such as jewelled carpets, handwoven pashminas and exotic jewellery. In the evening, treat yourself to an Arabian dinner at Abdel Wahab in Souk Qaryat Al Beri, which has a great menu, prompt service and gorgeous views of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. If it’s a romantic dinner for two you’re after then Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi can arrange a private yacht complete with a specially prepared meal, candles and music. After dinner, have a night cap at Ray’s Bar in Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, Rush Bar at Yas Viceroy, which attracts some of the best international DJs or, if you like jazz music, then try Jazz Bar in the Hilton Hotel.

It was only last year that the tombs of Al Ain were given UNESCO world heritage status, catapulting them into the public eye. now and then Over the past 50 years, the UAE capital has altered beyond all recognition. Concierge explores the most distinctive structures of old and new Abu Dhabi with the help of some charming old photographs

Q Abu Dhabi has not always been the thriving, modern capital it is today. In fact, just 50 years ago it was little more than a large expanse of desert with a small cluster of barasti huts surrounding Al Hosn Palace. Glance at any photograph of Abu Dhabi in the 1960s and you’ll find very little indication of the city it has become 50 years later. Like its neighbour Dubai, Abu Dhabi has developed and adapted at an astonishingly rapid pace and continues to do so as modern towers replace 20-year-old villas and shiny new landmarks are built alongside old ones that no longer pack the same punch. Today, it’s the gleaming Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the magnificent Emirates Palace hotel and preview images of the dazzling Zayed National Museum that grab people’s attention. Yet it’s still well worth paying a visit to some of the older buildings that once held the spotlight in the UAE capital. If not as imposing or innovative as the city’s new landmarks, they possess a certain charm that harks back to an earlier era, when Abu Dhabi was only just beginning to assert itself on the world stage.

AL HOSN FORT IN 1959, PICTURE TAKEN BY RONALD CODRAI © TCA ABU DHABI

Now: Emirates Palace Built from gold, marble and other precious materials, the capital’s most iconic hotel stands pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche. It’s a must-see for any visitor to the emirate, even if just for a quick coffee in one of its many restaurants and cafés. Inside, 12 different shades of marble adorn the cavernous atrium which extends 60 metres high and 42 metres wide. The central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building. Outside, the vista is equally impressive, with 85 hectares of landscaped gardens, a marina, swimming pools, private beach and helipad, among other facilities. Contact: 02 6909000

Then: Al Hosn Fort Once the seat of power in Abu Dhabi and home to the ruling family, Qasr al Hosn (or Al Hosn Fort) now stands as a historic landmark and a tribute to the city’s past. This stately old building began life as a simple watch tower, erected around 1760 by the leader of the Bani Yas tribe, Sheikh Dhiyub Bin Isa to protect the water source against raiders. His son Sheikh Shakhbut then transformed the basic structure into an impregnable fort. As Abu Dhabi’s status grew, the Bani Yas tribe decided to move the city to a more strategic location on the coast and Sheikh Shakhbut transfered his palace from its former location in Liwa Oasis to the heart of the new city where it still stands today. It was enlarged and strengthened several times over the following centuries and now stands as one of Abu Dhabi’s most important historical landmarks. The mosques

Now: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque The third-largest mosque in the world is home to the world’s biggest hand-knotted carpet, numerous 24-carat gold chandeliers, 82 domes and over 1,000 columns and these are just some of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque’s credentials. Yet despite the impressive inventory of valuable materials used to build this enormous and beautiful place of worship, it is what the mosque stands for that makes it so interesting to visitors and the outside world. This is the final resting place of the late Sheikh Zayed, former ruler of the UAE, whose wish it was that the mosque should serve as a symbol of unity between people of different cultures and provide a source of understanding about the Islamic faith. It’s one of the few mosques in the UAE that is open to non-Muslims, who can explore the mosque at their leisure, join informative guided tours and develop an understanding of Islam and Emirati culture at the education centre. Despite the impressive inventory of valuable materials used to build this enormous and beautiful place of worship, it is what the mosque stands for that makes it so interesting to visitors and the outside world Then: Al Jahili Mosque Few people are aware the tiny mosque tucked away beside Al Jahili Fort is actually the oldest mosque in Abu Dhabi. Restoration work over the years gives the impression that this mosque is a more recent addition to the late-19 th century fort which was once the royal summer residence of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi and now serves as a cultural centre. In fact, it was probably constructed around the same time as the fort, which was built in the 1890s under the orders of Sheikh Zayed Bin Khalifa, who ruled Abu Dhabi from 1855 to 1909. For a glimpse of the oldest mosque in the UAE, visitors must travel to Fujeirah. From the road, this miniscule structure doesn’t look particularly old, but some studies have estimated that the masjid (mosque) dates back to 640AC, while others claim it may date back even further to 1146BCE. The museums

Now: Saadiyat Cultural District Boasting some of the world’s most iconic art institutions, the new Saadiyat Cultural District is set to provide a centre of culture on an unprecedented scale. Among the museums set to launch here over the coming years are The Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, The Performing Arts Centre, the Zayed National Museum and the Maritime Museum. First to open its doors will be the impressive Zayed National Museum, set for completion in 2016. This extraordinary structure, co-designed by 12 leading architectural firms, will feature a series of enormous steel feathers, inspired by the wings of the falcon, the UAE’s national bird. Inside, the museum’s exhibitions will tell the story of the late Sheikh Zayed and his unification of the emirates. A detailed exhibition at the visitor centre on Manarat al Saadiyat provides a preview of the district as a whole. Where: Saadiyat Island / When: 10am to 8pm / Contact: 02 6575800

Among the museums set to launch here over the coming years are The Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, The Performing Arts Centre, the Zayed National Museum and the Maritime Museum Then: Al Ain National Museum The oldest museum in the UAE and also one of the most informative when it comes to regional history, Al Ain National Museum has display cabinets bursting with interesting artefacts. There are two main sections. The first is ethnographical which looks back toward the pre-oil era and explains how people lived their lives here before the discovery of oil changed the course of UAE history. The archaeological section goes much further back into the country’s past with artefacts that hail from the Stone Age and Iron Age. There are ancient arrow heads and tools that testify to human occupation almost 7,500 years ago. Other items, including pottery, stone vessels and funerary objects which were unearthed in 5,000-year-old collective graves at Hili, are also on display. H o t e l B OO M Before 1980 there wasn’t a single hotel in Abu Dhabi. By 1981, the capital had five hotels –Al Ain Palace Hotel, InterContinental Abu Dhabi, Phoenix Plaza Hotel Apartments, Crowne Plaza Hotel and Hilton International Hotel Abu Dhabi. In 1985, the capital had six hotels and 15 years later, in 2000, this had gone up to 28. Since then, the number of hotels in Abu Dhabi has multiplied dramatically and there are now 109. In the last five years alone, 58 hotels have opened, including Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa and One to One Hotels, The Village.

WORD FOR WORD It may not be necessary to speak Arabic in order to get by in Abu Dhabi, but attempts to master the tongue bring social and cultural rewards

Q On any given day in Abu Dhabi, visitors are likely to come across at least five different languages. Various Indian dialects, European languages and Asian tongues are among the many spoken words that fill the streets in this cosmopolitan city, uniting people from all over the world. Nevertheless, Arabic is very much at the heart of Abu Dhabi and, while it’s not essential to speak the local tongue to get by, mastering the basics is the key to a true understanding of UAE life. “Learning any language tells us a lot about a society’s culture and values and, in turn, this can help visitors to gain a greater insight into the way of life in their particular destination,” says Shireen Sinno, manager at the Arabic Language Centre in Dubai. This is particularly true of Arabic, which, she says, encodes to a large extent the values and norms of its cultures. The famous Arab hospitality, the deep-rooted faith in Allah and a marked respect for others are cultural values that we can see reflected in the local language, Sinno explains.

The traditional Arabic greeting ‘ahlan wa sahlan’ is one of many expressions that displays the warmth of Arab hospitality by combining the words ‘ahl’ (family) and ‘sahl’ (directly translated as easy), so in this instance, ‘feel at home and your presence is welcomed’. Similarly, the considerate and polite expression ‘tasharrafnaa’, which is commonly said upon meeting, translates as ‘we are honoured to meet you’. Faith is ever present in Arabic, with a great many references to Allah in everyday phrases, including ‘il-hamdullillah’ (praise be to god), ‘laa samah-allah’ (God forbid) and ‘Allah y-sallimak’ (may God keep you safe). Popular proverbs offer further insight into Arabic. According to Arabic language expert Dr Hanada Taha Thomure, nothing illustrates the language and culture better than the proverbs people use on a daily basis. One example she gives is ‘Al Jaar qabla Addar’, which means ‘neighbour before house’. This proverb is deeply rooted in Arab culture, which places great value on neighbours and considers them to be part of one’s family. Despite many changes brought about by the fast-paced life Arabs now lead, this notion of placing your neighbour before your house is still evident all around the Arab world.

Proverbs like ‘my brother and I against my cousin: my cousin and I against the stranger’ reveals the strong familial and tribal ties that bind Arabic communities

Other proverbs like ‘older than you by a day, wiser than you by a year’ reflects the Arab respect for their elders, while ‘my brother and I against my cousin: my cousin and I against the stranger’ reveals the strong familial and tribal ties that bind Arabic communities. Several common Arabic proverbs are familiar in other languages too. ‘Ykhaaf min Dhilli’ (afraid of his own shadow), ‘Aljamaal Jamaal ennafs’ (beauty is skin deep) and ‘El Hubb A’ma’ (love is blind) pop up in a number of European tongues. Over the centuries, Arabic has influenced many languages, including English, Spanish, Turkish and French. During the Islamic golden age (750 CE to 1257 CE), which saw great leaps in science across the Arab world,

the influence of the region’s language made itself felt in a huge number of other tongues from Bengali to Swahili. In Spanish, up to 4,000 words are reportedly of Arabic origin. Many familiar and everyday words in English, including ‘cotton’, ‘magazine’, ‘sofa’, ‘sugar’, ‘lemon’ and ‘cup’ are Arabic loan words. Interestingly, the numerals used in Europe and America are of Arabic origin, while the Arabs themselves use another set, variously described as the Indic numerals, the Eastern Arabic numerals and, by Arabs themselves, Indian numbers. Borrowing, of course, works both ways and plenty of foreign words have found their way into Arabic, although only recently has this happened on any significant scale.

“Historically, borrowing into classical and standardised Arabic has been strictly limited,” explains Dr Taha Thomure. “The spoken dialects, however, which have been inf luenced by colonisation and other socio-political circumstances, have borrowed liberally from English, French and Italian.” When speaking local dialects, people tend to pepper their Arabic with non-Arabic words like ‘cellphone’, ‘computer’, ‘ok’ and ‘sorry’. Some speakers even play around with the English words and conjugate them using the Arabic system, producing words like ‘chayyik’ (check on something) and ‘mkandash’ (is air-conditioned), she adds. To the prospective student, the large number of different dialects spoken across the Arab world can seem daunting, but Arabs can generally understand each another. In any case, students will often start with Modern Standard Arabic, which is the form used in writing and most formal speech.

H a n dy w o r d s a n d p h r a s e s for visitors Marhaba – Hi Ahlan was sahlan – Welcome Kayf il-Haal – how are you Tasharrafnaa – pleased to meet you Ma’a as-salaama(t) – goodbye Wayn – where Shukran – thank you Afwan – you’re welcome

For visitors, it is worth trying to grasp a few basic phrases to use around Abu Dhabi. Those who want to take it a step further and master the script, will probably find learning the Arabic alphabet easier than expected. According to Dr Taha Thomure, achieving a basic communication level in Arabic is actually quite easy and quick. Some of the sounds that require more practise than others include, ‘ghayn’ (like the French R) and ‘dhaad’ (like the D in dull). Another sound that needs practise is the emphatic Ha sound (the noise you make when you drink something really hot). “However, generally speaking there are no impossible sounds in Arabic and with a little practise and comparison examples, beginners usually master the Arabic sounds and alphabet system in a relatively short amount of time,” she says. Efforts to thank taxi drivers, order food and introduce yourself in Arabic do not go unnoticed in Abu Dhabi. “Learning the official language of the host country reflects the individual’s respect towards the Arabic culture, which is always appreciated. In short, learning Arabic is a great cultural experience that adds value to one’s overall experience in the UAE.”

ARCHIPELAGO ADVENTURE You haven’t seen Abu Dhabi until you’ve explored some of the neighbouring islands where much of the city’s culture, history and scenic landscape lies in wait

Q Few people think of Abu Dhabi as an archipelago, but the UAE capital is actually one of over 200 islands. Many are uninhabited and off limits to the public, but a small handful welcome visitors with promises of hidden lagoons, dolphin sightings and pristine beaches. Many of these islands, including Dalma, have played a central role in the UAE’s history and incorporate heritage sites and fascinating relics of earlier eras. Others, like Futaisi island, boast vast swathes of unspoilt beach, while the tranquil Sir Bani Yas shelters an exotic array of wildlife in a stunning, natural setting. Whether it’s the idea of experiencing a real desert island or the desire to get a little respite from the noise of the city, there’s no shortage of reasons to venture a little way off shore to explore Abu Dhabi’s archipelago. Each has a different character and offers its own set of attractions, so it’s worth joining an island-hopping tour or hiring a boat for the day to get the real archipelago experience.

Dalma Delve into UAE history on Dalma Island, home to one of the country’s oldest inhabited settlements. For over 7,500 years, humans have carved out an existence on this little patch of land, which was once a key site for pearl divers. On old maps the island is referred to as Pearl Island and visitors keen to learn more about this historic, local industry can visit the Dalma Island Pearl Museum. Once the private residence of Mohammed Bin Jassim Al Marikhy, a well-known pearl merchant, the building now houses an eclectic array of artefacts, including 7,000-year-old tombs, pottery that dates back to the Mesopotamian Civilisation, ancient English coins and traditional equipment for pearl diving. While history might be this island’s primary attraction, there is plenty more to admire after exploring the heritage sites, which also include early 20 th Century mosques and traditional homes. In complete contrast to common perceptions of a dry, barren desert island, Dalma is remarkably green and fertile with more than 200 freshwater wells that have made it a popular stop for passing ships over the centuries. Today, with the pearl industry a thing of the past, farming and fishing are the lifeblood of local inhabitants and orchards and crop fields pepper the lush, natural landscape. Dalma, which forms part of the Desert Island group, can be reached via ferry from Jebel Dhanna (250 kilometres from Abu Dhabi city) or by plane. Visit desertislands.com

The largest natural island in the UAE, Sir Bani Yas was once home to the biggest wildlife reserve in the Middle East. Now, while other wildlife parks have overtaken it in terms of size, it remains one of the country’s proudest tributes to nature and home to thousands of free-roaming animals and birds. Sir Bani Yas is one of the Desert Island group, which lie around two and a half hours by road from Abu Dhabi. It was the first of these islands to welcome visitors and there are now many ways to experience it’s natural beauties. Kayak through the mangrove-filled waters and see the island on horseback, by mountain bike or from a 4x4 on a wildlife drive. Other activities include sailing, snorkelling, archery and tours of the archaeological site, where the remains of an early Christian monastery have recently been unearthed. Contact: 02 4061400.

5-7 Futaisi island

Futaisi Less desert island and more eco-tourism resort, Futaisi island is nevertheless a perfect place to while away an afternoon or longer enjoying one of Abu Dhabi’s prettiest locales. Tourist infrastructure on the island means that there are plenty of ways to take advantage of its many natural attributes, including bicycle tours of the countryside, horse rides along the beach and guided trips to the hidden lagoons in the mangroves. Comfortable accommodation at the Futaisi Island Golf and Country Club provides facilities for overnight stays or longer vacations on the island. Facilities include the swimming pool, health club and numerous outdoor, sports activities like beach volleyball, jet skiing and other water sports.

Over on the undeveloped side of the island, all such signs of human habitation melt away and nature is left to reign supreme. Here, endangered sea eagles swoop through the clear skies while gazelles bound gracefully over the sand. At the water’s edge, migrating birds gather to rest next to brightly-coloured flamingoes and ospreys. In the warm waters surrounding the island, dolphins and endangered green sea turtles can sometimes be spotted, while back on land the undergrowth is alive with the rustle of tiny inhabitants like the rare dhub lizard. Located just three miles off the Abu Dhabi coats, Futaisi island is easily accessible by public ferry or private boat. Contact: 02 6666601 or visit futaisi.com

CAPITAL COUTURE New malls dedicated to luxury shopping are drawing more designer names to the capital, allowing Abu Dhabi to emerge alongside Dubai as a premier shopping destination in its own right

Q In years past, Abu Dhabi’s most discerning shoppers had to make the hourlong drive to Dubai for a complete luxury retail experience. Now all that has changed with the arrival of boutique shopping malls drawing new designer names to the capital and housing them all conveniently under one roof. “The UAE capital continues to grow as an international luxury shopping destination,” says Richard Foulds, property manager of Avenue at Etihad Towers, the city’s newest mall. “Not only is the demand for high-end shopping among Abu Dhabi residents extremely strong, but the city’s visitor market is rapidly expanding with increasing numbers of travellers, from Russia, China, India, the US and certain parts of Europe, who are known for their love of luxury brands.”

Dedicated entirely to luxury shopping, Avenue at Etihad Towers provides high-end brands with an ideal environment to appeal to their target market. “Avenue is Abu Dhabi’s first standalone shopping destination dedicated purely to luxury. It is an intimate boutique destination with a unique appeal that will place Abu Dhabi firmly on the international shopping map,” adds Foulds. Shopping here is a carefully orchestrated experience, which begins the moment visitors arrive. To make the most of the VIP features, visitors can visit the service desk and request a celebritystyle shopping experience. Style consultants will accompany shoppers around the boutiques to provide a professional perspective. Private collection previews can also be arranged for those who want to get ahead on trends.

With several more malls planned for the coming years, it’s likely that every niche in the capital’s retail scene will soon be addressed. At the moment, shops are opening at the new Boutik Mall on Reem Island It’s a far cry from the shopping scene in Abu Dhabi five years ago. Then, international brands were distributed via retailers’ showrooms in locations across the centre of the city, says Jean-Marc Shammas, regional brand director of Piaget. “Today the trend in Abu Dhabi is for high-end retail experiences and brands are opening their own boutiques in exclusive locations like Avenue.” For some brands, Avenue is just the exclusive destination they have been waiting for. “We previously held back on strengthening our presence because we couldn’t find the ideal space to mirror our brand identity, but with the opening of Avenue, expansion made perfect sense,” says Matthieu Dupont, brand manager at A. Lange

This prestigious German watch company opened its first Middle East boutique at Avenue earlier this year, alongside numerous other debut brands, including Breguet, Canali, Chloé, De Grisogono, Givenchy, Guiseppe Zanotti, Hermès, Hervé Léger, JM Weston, Kiton, Lanvin, Manolo Blahnik, Officine Panerai, Roger Dubuis, Salvatore Ferragamo, Stefano Ricci, Stéphane Rolland and Tom Ford. It won’t be long before these new names are followed by more designer first-timers in Abu Dhabi as the likes of Prada, Marc Jacobs, Mulberry and more prepare to launch within the Galleria at Sowwah Square. Positioned on the up-and-coming Al Maryah Island and set to open towards the end of 2013, this new retail destination promises to bring an entirely new shopping experience to Abu Dhabi. “We have created a dynamic, sophisticated and architecturally significant place for visitors to shop, eat and enjoy panoramic views of the city. The Galleria will feature a prestigious mix of luxury to mid-market retailers alongside a collection of chef-driven restaurants and cafés along the waterfront,” says Kenneth A Himmel, co-managing partner of Galleria development firm Gulf Related.

High-end shoppers will find no shortage of luxury amenities here from the VIP valet parking service to climate-controlled corridors offering air-conditioned access to neighbouring residential and commercial developments. Also accessible from the mall is the new Rosewood Abu Dhabi hotel, which will open towards the end of next year, providing a luxurious and ideally located base for visitors who want to make the most of Galleria’s shopping opportunities. “The combined offerings of both Rosewood Abu Dhabi and Galleria will contribute to further enhancing Abu Dhabi as the premium choice for luxury shopping across the region. We are confident that Sowwah Square will soon become the preferred leisure, dining and shopping destination for those who value luxury living,” says Luigi Romaniello, managing director of Rosewood Abu Dhabi. With several more malls planned for the coming years, it’s likely that every niche in the capital’s retail scene will soon be addressed. At the moment, shops are opening at the new Boutik Mall on Reem Island, while the Yas Mall on Yas Island is scheduled for next year. For luxury shoppers, The Collection at Saadiyat, due to open this year within the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, will provide a selection of high-end retail shops and smart dining venues. For now, the spotlight is on Avenue at Etihad Towers, where shoppers will have access to more than 35 leading brands and select dining venues, including Abu Dhabi’s first Fauchon Le Café and the five-star facilities of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. experiences in superbly crafted surroundings, provides unique experiences for all. Already, it is proving to be a popular contemporary lifestyle destination.” It is becoming increasingly important to establish a strong brand presence in the capital. “Abu Dhabi customers wanting to buy luxury products used to go to Dubai or travel abroad. Now, with the opening of Avenue, we see flagship boutiques that offer the latest collections, just as they would in any other big city. As the capital of the UAE and home to over 42 percent of Emiratis, this presence is extremely important,” says Piaget’s Shammas. With so many luxury shopping developments on the horizon, many international brands are now considering opening two or three boutiques in Abu Dhabi within the next few years, he says, adding that: “There are few capitals in the world that are expanding as fast as Abu Dhabi and attracting so many international brands. In terms of luxury shopping, the UAE capital is rapidly catching up with the world’s major retail centres.”

TIME IS precious Concierge visits the manufactory of venerable watch brand Vacheron Constantin to uncover past successes and movements for the future

Q As the saying goes, ‘from small acorns do big oak trees grow’ and never was a truer word spoken than of Jean-Marc Vacheron, a master watchmaker who began crafting timepieces at his small Geneva-based workshop in 1755. In the two and a half centuries since, Vacheron’s meticulously designed creations have become world-renowned and his legacy lives on at the Vacheron Constantin manufactory at Planles-Ouates in Geneva. With a client list that reads like a who’s who from the last 255 years, it’s no surprise that the luxury watch brand has maintained its position at the peak of the watchmaking firmament. What is more impressive, however, is that it has all been achieved through a limited production of handmade masterpieces. Less than 20,000 are produced annually, a select number of which make their way to Dubai where they are sold at Damas stores within the Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Emirates Towers and also at the Vacheron Constantin boutique in Mall of the Emirates. Fine design and master craftsmanship has become a trademark for the brand and the Vacheron Constantin headquarters and factory at Plan-les-Ouates, which was designed by world-renowned architect Bernard Tschumi, is where a large proportion of the work is done. “People sometimes ask how long it takes to produce a Vacheron Constantin timepiece, but it’s impossible to put a timeframe on it,” says Yassin Tag, brand manager for Vacheron Constantin Dubai. It seems unfathomable, especially when considering the fast-paced productivity of many other watch brands, but the values that shape this company are clearly rooted in something deeper than profit. Concierge flew to Geneva to experience first-hand what it is that makes this esteemed watch brand tick...

Science meets art

While the watchmaking process is incredibly technical, Julien Marchenoir, brand equity and heritage director, is quick to point out that Vacheron Constantin always sits somewhere between innovation and tradition, paying careful attention to the artistic roots of the brand. “Geneva has always been an artisan city and as such watches were originally seen as pieces of art. This is a philosophy that we have tried to maintain.” Indeed, in 2007 a collection of masks at the Barbier-Mueller Museum in Geneva was the inspiration behind the highly sought-after Les Masques collection of 12 timepieces. “Each piece is adorned with a miniature reproduction of the masks,” says Marchenoir. “It was a feat in watchmaking, but also an accomplishment in the art world.”

3

Absolutely flawless Walking through the ultra-sophisticated corridors of the manufactory at Plan-lesOuates in Geneva, it’s impossible not to feel the buzz of excitment that reverberates around the workshops, which house some 250 master watchmakers, engineers and designers. After all, this is where the magic happens, with around 80 percent of the watchmaking process executed by hand in these very workshops. Meticulous controls are carried out at each stage of manufacture and the workshops are situated in a controlledatmosphere zone to guarantee perfectly clean air. Lab coats and overshoes are mandatory, which only serves to reinforce the brand’s apparent quest for perfection. The process begins in the assembly workshop where watchmakers labour over scrupulously checked components. Built from scratch, this is an extraordinarily delicate process that sees pin-sized mechanisms fitted together under microscopes. The next step is the adjusting workshop, where the complications are regulated and repeatedly checked at 24-hour periods, before being approved for transfer to the complications workshop. Labour-intensive procedures, such as the making of the Tourbillon squelette, which requires 1,500 hours of work, is all part of the process in this area. Next door in the casing workshop we meet with master watchmaker Chrystian Lefrançois, who has been with Vacheron Constantin since 1966 and has worked with some of the most complicated

movements ever created at the manufactory. Here the dial, hands and case are painstakingly fitted to the movement. The decoration and aesthetics is equally specialised with artisans working for up to seven weeks on one timepiece. According to Lefrançois, success lies in the human touch. “Don’t underestimate the human element. Each piece has a very personal ingredient to it as it is crafted by hand,” he says.

Similarly, since last year Vacheron Constantin has associated its name with the annual Metiers d’Art Days, an artistic crafts’ event dedicated to promoting and passing on of over 200 skills, some of which are centuries old. From this relationship the Metiers d’Art collection has emerged and with it an assortment of limited-edition pieces. The latest range is the Metiers d’Art Les Univers Infinis, which combines the traditional techniques of fine watchmaking with artistic crafts such as enameling, gem setting and guilloche (decorative engraving) work. With only three models available – Fish, Dove and Shell – the series is limited to only 20 timepieces per model.

Classic collections With this in mind, Vacheron Constantin has become something of a collectors’ brand, with connoisseurs from across the globe setting their sights on many of the company’s rarer creations. For example, one piece likely to cause excitement among the haute horology set is the Malte 100 th Anniversary Edition model due to be released by the end of the year. Limited to 100 pieces, the tonneau-shaped (like a barrel) timepiece pays tribute to Vacheron Constantin’s first form watch launched in 1912. In addition to being equipped with Vacheron Constantin’s much-revered

6

5

hand-wound Calibre 4400 movement, this timepiece has a 65-hour power reserve. It also wins plaudits for its aesthetic appeal as each piece is individually numbered on the caseback and fitted with a strap in blue Mississippiensis alligator leather, secured by a Malte cross-shaped buckle crafted from platinum. Of course, while limited-edition pieces appeal to aficionados, those simply seeking a well-made watch that will stand the test of time are also catered for because the current collections include a variety of models. Patrimony, which is perhaps Vacheron Constantin’s most famous 5 Julien Marchenoir, brand equity and heritage director, Vacheron Constantin 6 Patrimony Traditionelle 14-day tourbillon 7 Master watchmaker at work

collection, delivers classics such as the super-refined Patrimony Contemporaine perpetual calendar and the new Patrimony Traditionnelle 14-day tourbillon, which is credited as one of the first watches to meet the updated and even more stringent Hallmark of Geneva requirements. Likewise, the Malte Collection, which includes four new models (three of which are approved in accordance with the new Hallmark of Geneva criteria) is also a fine example of Vacheron Constantin’s commitment to tradition. Women are also catered for because in 2003 the first ladies’ collection was introduced. Inspired by the original asymmetrical model that won the Diplome du Prestige de la France in 1972, these elegant timepieces are the epitome of femininity. Whichever timepiece appeals, according to Tag, when you invest in a Vacheron Constantin watch you receive more than a watch. “We produce a limited number of exceptional timepieces every year because we are a company that favours quality above all else. From the design through to the production, almost everything is created by hand and with this in mind, these timepieces have a warmth and a soul. Ultimately, when you invest in a Vacheron Constantin what you’re actually getting is a little piece of history.”

ON THE SEA SHORE As temperatures fall and cool breezes sweep back in to Abu Dhabi, the emirate’s seaside restaurants are throwing open their doors to al fresco dining

Q It’s been a couple of months since visitors last enjoyed Abu Dhabi’s al fresco eateries. Rising temperatures and high humidity levels have kept most diners eating inside. Now, however, the long, hot summer has drawn to a close and visitors are no longer restricted to air-conditioned venues. Al fresco restaurants have come out of hibernation and are making the most of the cool breezes and balmy nights at the seaside. From romantic candlelit dinners for two overlooking the ocean to long, lazy lunches in picture-perfect settings on the beach, the capital is brimming with high-end seaside dining options. Concierge heads back to the shore to rediscover the joys of eating by the sea at some of the emirate’s best beachside dining venues.

67

BBQ Al Qasr Including ‘BBQ’ in the title of this awardwinning restaurant could give the impression that it is a standard, come-as-you-are eaterie. With BBQ Al Qasr, however, this is deceptive and only partly the case. The dress code might be relatively casual, but the atmosphere is on a par with the emirate’s smartest and most romantic restaurants. On arrival, visitors are led down a softly spot-lit path towards the beach, where cushioned, wooden gazebos await on the sand. The gentle slap of the waves against the shore, the ethereal glow cast by the moon and the impressive backdrop of the Emirates Palace behind, all contribute to the sense of magic and romance. This is a venue for couples celebrating an anniversary, a special birthday dinner or a perfect first date. The food, which could get away with being mediocre in such an atmospheric setting, is actually sublime, with tender wagyu beef cooked to order and succulent sea bass fillets suffused with the rich, smoky flavour of the barbecue. The gentle slap of the waves against the shore, the ethereal glow cast by the moon and the impressive backdrop of the Emirates Palace behind, all contribute to the sense of magic and romance Talay Be sure to book one of the tables on the edge of the terrace overlooking the sea at Talay. Sitting here, visitors have an uninterrupted view of the ocean, providing the perfect accompaniment to the delicious Thai seafood dishes on the menu. There’s stir-fried Omani lobster, given a spicy twist with chilli and Thai basil, or succulent jumbo prawns scented with kaffir leaves, coriander and coconut red curry sauce. The pièce de résistence, however, has to be the Talay Plow, a towering platter of fresh, grilled seafood, including Australian lobster, jumbo prawns, hammour and squid served with steamed Thai vegetables and fried rice with crab. This is Thai food at its creative best. Chef Ongart Pengkomseang specialises in adding a modern touch to give popular Thai dishes a twist while still using traditional cooking methods. It’s a formula that definitely works. Where: Le Méridien Abu Dhabi When: Daily 12.30 to 3.30pm and 7 to 11.30pm Contact: 02 6446666

Beach House It’s hard to decide whether to go to Beach House for lunch when you can fully appreciate the picture-perfect view of golden beach on one side and landscaped gardens on the other, or at night when you can dine under the stars on the terrace. For a happy compromise, book a table in the early evening and watch the sun set over the Arabian Gulf before darkness falls and the focus shifts away from the stunning views to the restaurant itself. Inside, the décor is a comfortable blend of rustic Italian with a modern twist. Heavy, wooden tables, slatted blinds and just a touch of wicker retain the traditional Mediterranean vibe without going overboard on the Tuscan touches. There are no chequered tablecloths or wax-drizzled wine bottles here. This is a spacious, modern eatery that nevertheless retains a sense of cosy, family dinners. The menu is based around homemade Mediterranean-style meals, accompanied by a selection of wines, sangrias and cocktails. Chef Michele Mueller’s dishes feel like the kind of recipes that have been handed down through the generations, with secret ingredients that reveal a new side to classic Spanish and Italian fare. Vasco’s

Beachside bars

Warm, relaxed and enduringly popular with visitors and residents, this friendly, seaside restaurant serves up some of the best comfort food in town. At first glance, the mixed medley of cuisines on the menu might look a little adventurous for a restaurant that aims to serve quality as well as quantity. On first taste, however, it’s clear Vasco’s achieves both. Pizza, steak, pasta, fish and curry dishes are all superb and there’s a well-stocked salad bar to fill in any gaps. The setting is pure laidback romance, with Tuscan-style table settings, candlelight and a wooden deck that hangs out over the water.

Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Abu Dhabi. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. It costs approximately AED35 to AED50 to smoke and the most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling as many as 50 cigarettes. If you’re after an authentic taste of Middle Eastern culture, however, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply, blow down the pipe to get rid of smoke build-up in the water and share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.

my LIFE IN ABU DHABI

Morag Cromey-Hawke, executive director of Operation Smile UAE, describes her favourite aspects of life in Abu Dhabi

1

1 Teatros, Park Rotana 2 Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

I arrived in Abu Dhabi in 1980 and immediately fell in love with the place. I have always felt extremely safe here and, with the exception of those hot, humid months in the summer, I love the climate. It’s great having the opportunity to entertain friends outside on our rooftop garden. I have a background in teaching so I have worked on many educational projects since being here and last May was asked to help establish a children’s charity in the UAE, Operation Smile. Among other things, the charity raises funds and awareness through corporate and individual donors and events to provide free surgeries for children with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities. These days my weekends are often taken up with work for Operation Smile, but if I do get some time off then it’s nice to go out on the boat and relax on a quiet beach with friends and family. I also enjoy kayaking through the mangroves.

For a casual bite to eat, I like Vasco’s particularly when the weather is cooler and you can sit outside, or if I fancy Mexican then Hemmingways, both in the Hilton Abu Dhabi. When it comes to smart dinners, I generally choose between Oceans at the Royal Méridien, Benihana in the Beach Rotana or Teatros in the Park Rotana. From a cultural perspective, Abu Dhabi is definitely up and coming and I’m really excited about the museums and galleries planned for Saadiyat Island. It will be fantastic to be able to visit all these international museums and attend performances in the new Opera House. Then, of course, the desert is a mustsee for any visitor to Abu Dhabi and also Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is a great way to learn about Islamic traditions. My family and I are lucky to live next door to an Emirati family, who have always been very friendly and

welcoming. When I first came here in 1980, it was easier to experience the cultural side of Abu Dhabi. There were often weddings that took up the whole street and everyone was invited to join in the celebrations. Visitors should take the opportunity to travel around the emirate, stopping at the small villages and chatting to the inhabitants. There are certain events that I look forward to each year, including the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Festival, the Abu Dhabi Film Festival which takes place this month and the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. The book fair is a real favourite of mine because of the large number of authors that come here to discuss their works.
