Arabic sweets No trip to Abu Dhabi would be complete without sampling traditional Arabic sweets, including Baklava. These sticky, irresistible treats come in all shapes and sizes and are generally made from chopped nuts and layers of pastry glued together with honey or syrup. Often served at the end of a meal or as an accompaniment to coffee, Baklava can be found across the Arab world, although the ingredients vary from country to country. Falcons hold an important place in UAE heritage. Back when the country was little more than desert, local tribes relied on tamed falcons to help them hunt for food. Today, they are prized as pets rather than hunters, but still retain their value as representatives of UAE culture and tradition. Visitors can get up close to these majestic birds and learn more about their former roles at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. Take a break from the bustle of the city and head out through the desert to Al Ain Oasis, where palm-shaded walkways and landscaped gardens colour the landscape. Research reveals that the oasis, which covers an area of around 1,200 hectares and contains over 147,000 date palms, has been cultivated for more than three thousand years. Of particular interest is the ancient falaj irrigation system, which dates back to the origins of the oasis and can still be seen intact today. Where: Al Ain. When: Open 24 hours. Just next door to Yas Island is Saadiyat Island where construction is underway on the capital’s much-anticipated culture hub. The new Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Louvre Abu Dhabi may not be built yet, but there is still plenty to do and see around Saadiyat. Get to grips with the capital’s ambitious cultural plans in a comprehensive exhibition at Manaraat al Saadiyat. Have lunch on the terrace at the centre’s popular al Fanr restaurant or stop for a bite at Beach House in the Park Hyatt Hotel and Villas and dine on tasty Mediterannean fare while enjoying stunning sea views. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing on enormous sun beds at the stylish Monte-Carlo Beach Club or play a round of golf at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club.

Gold to go From the popular gold souk to the many jewellery shops that line its streets and malls, Abu Dhabi is full of places to buy gold. Perhaps the most interesting, however, is the gold ATM at The Emirates Palace, where solid gold coins and bars of various sizes can be purchased at that day’s market price. Where: Emirates Palace. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an absolute must for visitors to Abu Dhabi. Not only is it stunningly beautiful and finely crafted, but the tours provide visitors with a real understanding of Islam. Emirati guides offer visitors the opportunity to ask questions about the culture and the daily lives of locals here, making for a truly rewarding and richly educational experience. For a taste of culture and history, I would suggest the authentic pearl diving trips offered by Jumeirah. The journey begins as you board the dhow ship and receive a pearl diving demonstration from trained professionals. There are also swimming, snorkelling and souvenir-shopping opportunities, followed by a sumptuous lunch featuring regional specialities. If visitors want to try Arabic cuisine then Li Beirut at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers is really the place to go. Chef Nidal takes classic Lebanese cuisine to a new realm of modern artistry. Abu Dhabi offers visitors a wide variety of athletic activities from golf at one of several excellent golf courses to shooting sessions at the Caracal Shooting club. I particularly recommend the shooting club as it offers something a bit different and it has great facilities for every level. There’s also Al Forsan Sport Resort in Khalifa City, which is excellent for shooting, equestrian, paintball, water and motor sports. For a really thrilling experience, there is, of course, the Marina Circuit at Yas Island, where visitors can get behind the wheel of a race car and put their driving skills to the test on the track.

Q Towards the end of October, visitor arrivals in Abu Dhabi begin to spike. As the month draws to a close, hotel rooms become completely booked up. By the time November rolls around, the city is heaving with racing fans from all over the world here to attend the social and sporting event of the year, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Each year, around 50,000 people pass through the gates of Yas Marina Circuit to attend the event. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just for die-hard racing fans: people come to enjoy a range of activities, from concerts featuring major international performers and lavish parties to gala dinners and balls attended by celebrities, drivers and other VIP guests. For three days, Yas Marina Circuit is a whirlwind of activity with as many diversions being enjoyed off the track as there are on. Nevertheless, all this fanfare and excitement does build up towards one major event, the Grand Prix on Sunday 4, when the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading Formula 1 race drivers battle it out for a place on the Abu Dhabi podium and, perhaps, for the title of overall World Champion.

For three-day ticket holders, it all kicks off on November 1 with the pit lane walk, a chance to see some of the drivers and admire the cars up close as the teams prepare them for the practice race. According to Saud al Qaydi, motor sport executive at Yas Marina Circuit, the pit lane walk is one of the best ways to make the most out of the weekend. “It’s an experience you don’t get at many races. Visitors can walk right by all the teams as they prepare for the practice race and it’s really exciting to watch.” Friday brings the drivers out onto the track for the first time for the Formula 1 practice sessions. This is a chance for the teams to test their cars on the track and get to grips with the challenges they will face on the day of the race. There are plenty of them. Designed by renowned track architect Hermann Tilke, the circuit at Yas Marina is considered one of the most demanding in the world with a number of high-speed sections, including the longest straight in Formula 1, some extremely tight corners and a twisting, street-circuit-style zone.
With so many interesting features scattered around the circuit, choosing where to sit can be tricky. It really depends on what you’re looking for, says Malek Rawas Al Rashedi, senior director of support services at Yas Marina Circuit. From the North Grandstand, spectators can see drivers tackle many of the track’s most technical aspects, including the circuit’s tightest hairpin turn, while those sitting in the West Grandstand will have the extraordinary experience of seeing the cars belt towards them at 300 kilometres per hour along the main straight. “If you want the action of the start and finish lines and the F1 pit lane, then go for the Main Grandstand although the South Grandstand really has the best views with the backdrop of the Marina as it’s filled with yachts on race day. However, for a V8 fan watching the Australian V8 Supercar Championship races, which takes place the same weekend, the Marina Grandstand is ideal. It’s right where the pit lanes are situated for that race so you can see a lot of action.”

Away from the track The Yasalam after-race concerts attract almost as much attention as the race itself. This year, race-goers can look forward to a star-studded line-up with Kylie Minogue set to perform on Friday, Nickleback on Saturday and American rap legend, Eminem to round off the weekend on Sunday. During the day, the F1 Village and Oasis areas keep children and adults entertained with live music, interactive games and competitions, jugglers, break dancers and other performers. Food stalls selling snacks and drinks are available for a quick bite while those who prefer a sit-down meal can head over to the Yas Viceroy hotel, where restaurants will be offering a range of brunches, buffets and gourmet dining options throughout the weekend. In the evenings those with invites can carry on the fun at a series of red carpet parties that take place over the weekend. Always popular is the incredibly glamorous Chequered Flag Ball, which has been attended by the likes of Hugh Grant, Boris

The big race Come Sunday and the atmosphere multiplies in intensity as the drivers take their places on the grid for the Grand Prix. With 55 laps to complete over a total distance of 305.355 kilometres at average speeds of 195 kilometres per hour, they have their work cut out. Last year it was British driver Lewis Hamilton who took the trophy, breaking Sebastian Vettelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two-year winning streak at the circuit. This year, Hamilton says, he is going for back-to-back wins. With Vettel 62 points ahead of him at the time of going to press, Hamilton will need a victory in Abu Dhabi if heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to have any chance at claiming his second world champion title.

Q The records Lewis Hamilton has set are outnumbered only by the trophies, titles and awards he has won. He began his glittering career as the youngest driver, aged just 13 to be offered and fulfill a Formula 1 contract before going on to become the youngest ever Formula 1 world champion (at the time). Along the way he claimed the highest number of wins in a season debut and, unusually, became the first and only driver ever to have his car recovered by a crane and put back on the track during a Formula 1 race. Last year, he showed UAE crowds just what he was capable of when he stormed to victory at the 2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and this year the stands will be packed with fans hoping to see him do the same again. It was an important win. The 2011 season was a tough one for Hamilton who had several setbacks early on. When he crossed the finish line in first place it was, he says, a huge feeling of satisfaction coupled with relief. “Last year was a very tough season because one team and one driver dominated most of the races, which made it difficult to get a breakthrough result. “Everything came together at Abu Dhabi. I qualified on the front row and led pretty much the whole way.” This was the first time that Hamilton, who lost out the preceding year to fellow Formula 1 wunderkind Sebastian Vettel, won at Yas Marina. “It’s always nice to win at a circuit for the first time. It’s a new experience and I was pleased to tick this one off my list, especially as I’d led and lost out in 2009,” he adds.

This year, Hamilton has added a few more firsts to his ever-expanding list of personal records. His win at Monza in the Italian Grand Prix was a particular victory, he says, because it was the final step in collecting an F1 grand slam, given to victories at the sport’s four oldest and most historic circuits: Monza, Silverstone, Monaco and Spa-Francorchamps. “As with every season, there have been ups and downs. I’ve had three victories, one in Canada, which is one of my favourite races on the calendar, one in Hungary and the one in Monza, which completed the grand slam making it a personal milestone. I’ve got the whole set now and that makes me very proud.” Among the highlights of his career was lining up on the grid at Melbourne in 2007, he says. “That was the moment when it suddenly hit me that I was a Formula 1 driver and that I was lining up alongside Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen, people I’d watched on the television when I was growing up. Suddenly it all felt real and that was an incredible moment of realisation. It’s been non-stop ever since.” Hamilton’s passion for motor sports began early on. At the age of 10, he famously approached the McLaren team principal,
Ron Dennis while attending the Autosport Awards ceremony, informing him that he wanted to race for him one day. In signing Hamilton’s autograph book, Dennis replied: “Phone me in nine years and we’ll sort something out.” Three years later it was Dennis that called Hamilton after the young driver’s performance on the karting circuits became too impressive to overlook. Hamilton had begun karting in 1993 at the age of eight and quickly shot through the ranks, winning in the Cadet class, cleaning up in the Junior Yamaha in 1997 and claiming his second British Championship by the time he came into contact with Dennis once more. Placing Hamilton firmly on the path to Formula 1, Dennis signed him up to the McLaren driver development programme. True to form, the young protégée raced through the ranks, claiming the European Championship title in 2000 with maximum points. The following year, Hamilton got his first experience of driving against a racing legend when seven-times Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher made a one-off return to karts and competed against Hamilton alongside other future F1 drivers.

The German driver was impressed by the young karter and afterwards described him as a quality driver. “If he keeps this up I’m sure he will reach F1. It’s something special to see a kid of his age out on the circuit. He’s clearly got the right racing mentality.” He was right. Seven years later, ironically just as Schumacker was announcing his retirement, McLaren signed Hamilton to partner Fernando Alsonso for the 2007 season. McLaren wasn’t the only one to place its faith in the young driver. Swiss watch creators, TAG Heuer was quick to sign him up as an ambassador to the brand and he has worn its designs ever since. It’s an ideal partnerships, Hamilton says. “TAG Heuer is a very important brand within motor sport. It has been Formula 1’s official timekeeper for 20 years and it’s great to share the role with guys like Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen guys who are my racing heroes.”

The Carrera Series was first conceived in 1964, when brand founder, Jack Heuer created it in honour of the Carrera Panamericana Mexico, the most gruelling automobile endurance race in history. Hamilton describes his model as a modern classic with “all the elements of a classic timepiece, but with a modern twist”. Armed with a Formula 1 contract, a prestigious brand association and buckets of raw talent, Hamilton quickly built himself a reputation as one of the best drivers on the Formula 1 circuit today, earning the World Champion title in 2008 after only two seasons. Five years later his passion for the sport remains as strong as ever. “Every time I get in the car, I still feel grateful for having a job as a Formula 1 driver. I never take it for granted.” It’s hard work. When he’s in training he follows a rigorous routine, beginning with an early morning run that lasts around 90 minutes. This is the length of an average grand prix so it’s the best way to replicate the fitness levels needed in the car, he explains. “After that I
might have some lunch and then spend two or three hours in the gym focusing on core and strength work.” Racing in a Formula 1 grand prix is not just about physical fitness, a driver must be mentally prepared too. “Before a race I like to listen to music to get myself relaxed and into the zone. While it’s relatively straightforward to train your body to adapt to the physical demands of driving flat-out for two hours, it can be difficult to mentally prepare for the stress of a race. “I always relax in my room by listening to music – it helps me to focus so that I am perfectly ready to start the race in a positive frame of mind.” Once on track, Hamilton wastes no time fighting for the lead. His driving style, he acknowledges, has frequently been described as aggressive, but he disagrees. “I don’t think that’s a particularly accurate description. I like to attack, but if you’re not smooth and controlled then you’re not going to get the best from the car. You have to be a smooth driver to look after the tyres properly too. I guess I’d most like to be known as an entertainer, a driver who gets the fans excited during a grand prix.”

Q It takes an enormous number of people, many monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work and huge sums of money to organise the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Aside from the obvious arrangements like hiring additional staff, setting up the hospitality areas and preparing the circuit for the race, a great many smaller details must be attended to before the venue is ready to host the largest event on the Abu Dhabi social and sporting calendar.
Early summer As far back as June, the Yas Marina team are meeting to discuss plans for the November race. At this point, the emphasis is on preparing and then refining the all-important operations manual, which determines how issues such as signage, customer service, traffic and transport and crowd safety will be addressed. Meanwhile, other members of the team focus on the many temporary structures that need to be installed. Tents, prayer rooms, stages, extra bathrooms and additional hospitality spaces are just a few of the additional areas required to cater to the huge influx of visitors that will pass through the gates of Yas Marina Circuit over race weekend.

Late summer As the summer draws to a close, it’s time to start putting these plans into action. Around the end of August, the temporary structures are already starting to go up and work has begun on the track, garages and team areas so that everything is perfect when the cars, drivers and their entourages arrive on Monday before the race. By the end of September, orders are flooding in from the F1 teams to equip their individual villas with all the furnishings required to host their sponsors, important clients and VIP guests throughout race weekend. The villas also provide a base for team operations during the day. At this point, one of the biggest jobs is painting the track and the hot and tiring work is already underway. The sporting team, responsible for bringing the circuit to life with the blue run-off areas, red and white kerbs and white demarcation lines, have 5.5 kilometres to cover. It takes months and the team will still have to touch up the paintwork over race weekend to ensure that it looks immaculate each day. Countless checks must be run and every last centimetre of the circuit scrupulously examined, from the guard rails and debris fencing to the crash barriers and kerbs.

The final week
Already, freight is arriving from Europe and America to equip the team villas. It’s also time to set up The Paddock Club, located over the team garages to provide prime viewing of the race and hospitality for the guests of Formula 1 – another lengthy job. “Given that Formula 1 bring everything from their own furniture and carpets, right down to their own cutlery, this set up takes weeks. The Formula 1 team also has a contractor in to install sponsorship signage and, as a lot of this is painted on, it can be a very painstaking job,” explains Mark Hughes, operations director at Yas Marina Circuit. At the same time, Formula 1 television crews arrive to connect the world to Yas Marina Circuit over race weekend. The live global audience is approximately half a billion viewers and complete coverage of the event is crucial.
The last of the freight, which is also the bulk of it, arrives on Monday from India and from now on it’ll be flat out to get everything ready in time for the weekend. Throughout the day, the teams and their cars are arriving, despite the fact that the Indian Grand Prix has only finished at 4:30pm UAE time on the preceding day. In the days leading up to the race weekend, last-minute preparations are underway to make sure everything flows smoothly and looks perfect from every angle. The condition of the landscaping is especially important and the team must be certain that the trees, plants and grass look neat and tidy for the aerial TV shots. “Cleanliness is obviously very important, particularly if we have any showers or sandstorms. This can cause havoc as we then have to clean all canopies and glass work,” says Hughes.

Race weekend On Thursday, the gates are open to the public for the first time to allow threeday ticket holders access for the pit-lane walk. It’s a great chance to see behind the scenes of Formula 1. As Hughes says: “Not all tracks do this, which is a shame, as it is the only chance people have to get this close to the F1 cars. We often get drivers hanging around and there is a fantastic buzz about the day.” The next three days are a blur of activity as tens of thousands of people arrive to witness the grand prix. Each day, the team must begin with a drivearound to ensure that all the signage is in place before people arrive. Once this is done, it’s time to inspect the venue. Every last corner from the car parks, grandstands and oasis areas right through to the paddock, media
centre and, of course the track, must be scoured before the public arrive each day. In the evenings, the focus switches towards the north end of the venue as crowds head towards Flash Arena for the post-race concerts. It’s fullon with the team working in shifts to provide 24-hour attendance at the circuit. Even when the race has been won, the last concert performed and the final ticket holder has left, there’s still a lot of work to do. “The break down goes on throughout the night and it’s amazing how much is already on the plane to Europe by sunrise on Monday,” Hughes says. “However, as we host the annual Young Drivers Test immediately after the grand prix, we won’t be able to rest on our laurels.”

Abu Dhabi is known mostly for its avantgarde architecture, the many ambitious new projects underway and the five-star lifestyle enjoyed by its residents. However, just 50 years ago there was little sign of any of this and few could have foreseen the modern metropolis the city would become. With history a part of the recent past, it’s easy to get an insight into the old ways of UAE life. Q This month, excitement is in the air as the UAE capital gears up to host the annual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Over race weekend, thousands of people will converge on the capital to witness the UAE’s largest automotive event and see the world’s top race drivers in action on the track. With so many race fans and motor enthusiasts here to attend the event, it’s not just Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit that will be in the spotlight. The capital, and the wider UAE, is home to a number of other motor-themed attractions, including some extraordinary car museums where visitors can get a taste of this country’s passion for all things automotive. The UAE is a haven for car enthusiasts. A short spin around the roads here is enough to convince you that this country has a particular fondness for all things automotive. While suped-up sports cars and flashy four-wheel drives might turn heads elsewhere, here they are the norm, so it’s hard to imagine what car collectors in this country consider museum-worthy.

One visit to the Emirate’s National Auto Museum in Abu Dhabi will show just how special a vehicle here needs to be to merit a place on the museum floor. Housed in a giant pyramid along the desert road that leads to Liwa, this eye-catching collection features all kinds of unexpected cars from the quirky and vintage to the downright bizarre. It’s hard to pick out a prize piece in such a collection and responses differ when it comes to choosing a favourite. For some it’s the customised caravan that looks like a globe and is precisely onemillionth the size of the world, while others might find the series of seven S Class Mercedes’ in the different colours of the rainbow, most appealing. The owner of the museum, Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nayhan, who is affectionately nicknamed the rainbow sheikh because of these Mercedes, clearly has a taste for unusual vehicles. His collection numbers more than 200 pieces and among them are classic cars, military vehicles, (one of which has a golfing range on top), trucks, caravans and convertibles of all shapes and sizes. Perhaps the real crown jewel of this collection is the 1950s Dodge Power Wagon, which holds a Guinness World Record for being the largest vehicle on the planet. Inside this colossal car is a four-bedroom apartment, living area, kitchen and bathrooms and, if that doesn’t sufficiently convey its size, then the car with standard proportions beneath it provides a point of comparison. One of the most eye-catching and unexpected vehicles on display is the glittery silver buggy that the Sheikh had custom-made to replicate one built by Mercedes Benz in 1986 to mark the company’s 100-year anniversary. The original was a one-off and the German car manufacturer

Of equal interest to car lovers are the older pieces in the collection. There’s also a collection of Minis, which range from an old, openair Moke to the more recent racing-striped models like those featured in the film, The Italian Job. Unrivalled as Sheikh Hamad’s collection may be when it comes to the weird and wonderful, his museum is not the only one that warrants a visit when it comes to classic and vintage cars. A few hours drive from the city, the Al Ain Classic Cars & Heritage Museum features a small but exclusive collection of old vehicles, many of them extremely rare.

Recently, another auto museum has provided classic car enthusiasts with a new place to pursue their passion. Located in Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the Galleria Ferrari boasts an impressive collection of Ferraris that date from 1947 to the present day. Discover the history of the brand and see the cars that made it including the Dino Ferrari, which was named after Enzo Ferrariâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, who died at the age of 24. The museum is just one of the many Ferrari-themed attractions at Ferrari World, which offers more than 20 rides, including the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fastest roller coaster and F1 simulators. Situated just next door to Yas Marina Circuit, the amusement park, which is the only one in the world built by Ferrari, is perfect for grand prix visitors who want to recreate some of the excitement of the race off-track.
The cars, which date from between 1901 to 1980, were collected from around the UAE and restored by Rashid Al-Tamimi, who established the museum in 2009. In addition to the beautiful, old automobiles on display is an eclectic selection of other exhibits, which include automobilia, vintage toys and Oriental rugs. The museum also has an interesting collection of historic photographs depicting life in Abu Dhabi before the oil boom. Another classic car collection can be found in Sharjah at the Sharjah Old Car Club & Museum, which houses over 100 vintage vehicles dating back to the early 20 th century. The museum, which launched in 2008, gained recognition from the international classic car community when it was invited to join the Federation of Vintage Vehicles. Visitors can browse the beautifully restored vehicles on display and learn more about how this is done in classic car restoration presentations run by the museum.

LASTING LEGACY If there’s one place every visitor must see it’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Beautiful and majestic, this is one of Abu Dhabi’s most recognisable icons and a proud monument to the country’s late leader

It’s one of Abu Dhabi’s most visited sites, the ‘attraction’ most recommended by the city’s concierges and one of the finest structures you’re likely to see. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a defining feature of Abu Dhabi, a proud monument that makes an impressive statement about the city. Sometimes simply known as the Grand Mosque, it gives the title a whole new meaning with a design and attention to detail that can only be described as breathtaking. While Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is simply stunning from the outside, it needs to be seen from the inside for a full sense of its beauty and importance to the people of Abu Dhabi. It is one of the few mosques open to visitors – part of a plan by the late president Sheikh Zayed to encourage a greater cultural understanding for all nationalities. Guided tours are given by the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi). Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest in the world. One need only glance at this imposing place of worship to realise that. Yet while it holds several world records, one category it is a serious contender for is that of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Its white marble exterior with gold trim cuts a fine image against the blue sky during the day, while at sunset the outline of the mosque creates a spectacular silhouette against the rich red colours of dusk. Take some time to wander around the main courtyard, which can accommodate up to 22,000 worshippers. The area is made almost entirely of white marble, from the tiles on the ground to the columns and ceilings. The workmanship and attention to detail is incredible. Closer inspection of the columns reveals intricate patterns of plants and flowers made from semi-precious stones, mother of pearl and gold. In fact, the materials were sourced from around the world – a symbol of Sheikh Zayed’s desire to unite people of all nationalities. There are over 1,000 of these semi-precious stone-encrusted columns outside. Add to this the 82 minarets (domes) of Moroccan design, some of which feature verses from the Qur’an. The top of every minaret is covered with white marble and embellished with 24-carat gold, while the main dome measures 32.7 metres in diameter and stands 70 metres high from the inside or 85 metres high from the outside.

In the room before the main prayer hall hangs a chandelier – the smallest of seven – set with precious stones, crystals and gold, while coloured marble is arranged in a floral pattern on the walls. The spectacular main prayer hall, which can accommodate up to 7,000 worshippers, faces Mecca. There are names written in Arabic on a wall at the front of the prayer hall. These are the 99 names of God taken from the Qur’an. Every Friday this room is full. When Abu Dhabi’s Muslims come here to pray, they kneel down on the world’s largest carpet. Made in Iran, the carpet is green, as this was Sheikh Zayed’s favourite colour. Those who pray here are often in the company of Abu Dhabi’s royalty, while ruling families from other emirates and neighbouring countries regularly visit to pray and pay their respects to Sheikh Zayed. The mosque is a huge credit to the man whose vision it was to see it built, but also to the government and people of Abu Dhabi who ensure it remains open to all nationalities and religions to help promote a greater cultural understanding.

Q It’s only recently that Abu Dhabi has begun to attract the notice of the art world. A few years ago, the capital’s goal to become a major international art hub by 2030 seemed a long way off. Now, with boutique art fair Abu Dhabi Art in its fourth edition and world-class institutions like the Louvre and the Guggenheim set to launch here over the coming years, the emirate’s cultural status is developing rapidly. This month, the focus of the international art community will be directed towards the UAE capital as it prepares to host Abu Dhabi Art 2012 at Saadiyat Cultural District. The event has attracted an increasing number of prestigious galleries from around the world since the inaugural fair in 2009 and is now a driving force behind the development of an established art scene in Abu Dhabi and the UAE as a whole.

The UAE’s art scene has grown considerably in the last few years and the Abu Dhabi Art fair’s unique boutique style presents an intimate melting pot of local, regional and international players from the art world in a young and exciting place.” Exhibitors at Abu Dhabi Art represent a hand-picked selection of elite galleries from around the world. Testifying to the success of previous editions of the fair, the 2012 event will see 80 percent of last year’s galleries return, with the likes of Gagosian from New York, Hauser & Wirth from Switzerland, Lisson from London, Enrico Navarra from Paris and Hunar Gallery from Dubai among the major international galleries set to attend again this year. Of t he 50 galleries ex hibit ing, a number will be making their first appearance at Abu Dhabi Art. Among these is Ota Fine Arts, a prominent contemporary art gallery based in Tokyo, Japan. Like many other galleries, Ota Fine Arts has been lured to Abu Dhabi
by the developments taking place in the emirate’s cultural sphere. “We have been intrigued by the movements in Abu Dhabi over recent years and thought it was a good time to make a move here. “We see Abu Dhabi as a city of growth – not only towards the commercial art market, but also towards the museums and institutions in development. We have brought artworks by Middle Eastern artists to Japan and now we would like to see how Japanese contemporary art will be received in Abu Dhabi. It’s exciting to open a new door to this conversation. We think Abu Dhabi’s role will only get bigger and bigger,” says Hidenori Ota, founder and director of Ota Fine Arts. The central point for this creative growth is Saadiyat Cultural District, where construction on the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum has already begun. Surrounding these iconic art institutions will be universities and other centres of learning, providing a global hub for culture and academia. These iconic museums will provide a major boost to the capital’s cultural credentials and to its general appeal

It will take time, though, for a lively arts scene with galleries and exhibition spaces to develop.” At present, the capital’s art scene is still in its infancy, but with the opportunities and publicity generated by Abu Dhabi Art in addition to the attention drawn by the new museums, it’s rapidly becoming a must-visit destination for artists, galleries and art buyers. As Berktold says: “Abu Dhabi Art has established itself as an important cultural platform and gateway to the region. It helps us tremendously to showcase our programme.” For some galleries, the fair provides an entry into the Middle East market, while others have used it to develop

This year’s programme will feature talks, workshops and other cultural activities with artist Subodh Gupta, artist Barthi Kher, HH Sheikha Salama, gallerist Kamel Mannour, artist Tadashi Kawamata, collector Dr Farhad Farjam and designer Stuart Haygarth, among others. Another distinguishing feature of Abu Dhabi Art is the sheer size and diversity of the programme. This is more than just an art show. “Its programme is full of varied elements from design and sculpture to education and local
culture. There are talks, book launches, artist interviews, debates and more – all providing the perfect mix for the visiting audience and participating galleries to see what’s happening in this part of the world,” says director Franz Leupi from Swiss gallery, AB. With so much going on in such a short space of time, visitors will need to plan their time at Abu Dhabi Art carefully. This year Bidya, which focuses on one emerging gallery, will feature works by CDA Projects, a contemporary exhibition space from Istanbul. It’s an excellent opportunity for the young gallery, which has never appeared at an art fair in the region before and for visitors to get a taste of what’s happening on the Turkish art scene. “Contemporary art from Turkey is attracting a lot of interest and demand in this region. Abu Dhabi Art is a great chance for the world’s best galleries to build strong relationships and we consider being part of the fair an important step for our gallery,” says Hidenori Ota. Over in Signature a selection of up-andcoming artists will be given the opportunity to present their works in a solo
show, while Beyond provides a platform for the presentation and sale of outdoor sculptures. Lastly, Design is where the leading galleries can be found. New to the programme this year is Art Zone, a specially designed space targeting children from the ages of two to 14. Other categories deal with the educational and informative functions of the fair. Among these is Abu Dhabi Art Conversations, a series of moderated discussions with leading art world professionals and Abu Dhabi Art Interviews, a new series consisting of short interviews with artists, gallerists, collectors and curators participating in the fair. There’s also Abu Dhabi Art Talks, designed to generate an exchange of ideas on topical cultural issues.

Originally designed by Lord Norman Foster for the Shanghai World Expo 2012, the 20-metre-high UAE Pavilion now serves as the distinctive venue for Abu Dhabi Art. Originally built in Shanghai, the structure had to be dismantled into 24,000 different pieces and reassembled on arrival. Designed to represent the sand dunes of the UAE desert, the pavilion is rippled on the windward side and smooth on the sheltered side, mimicking the way a sand dune is shaped by the wind. By day, its gleaming surface is red, copper and gold and by night it glows with internal golden lighting.
If that isn’t enough to fill four days with cultural activities, then the fair also offers book launches, film screenings and a boutique retail store featuring work by emerging Emirati artists, plus an extensive selection of art books. There will also be a jewellery exhibition by fair sponsor Bulgari, which will display signature pieces that capture the essence of the luxury brand and its 127-year history. With such a packed and varied itinerary, it is easy to see why this is one of the largest events of the year in Abu Dhabi. More than 20,000 visitors attended Abu Dhabi Art in 2011. Al Ain is a well-preserved city with an abundance of forts and oases. Often called “the garden city” because of its multitude of green areas, it is also the cultural and heritage heartland of the emirate. Its history dates back several thousand years and archaeological investigations have revealed that the area has been continuously inhabited since the late Stone Age period. Archaeological sites and artefacts have been found dating back to the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Hellenistic pre-Islamic and Islamic eras, while there is also evidence the city traded with major cultures in the north (Mesopotamia and Persia) and the east (India and Pakistan). This area contains over 500 graves and Bronze Age cairn tombs. It dates to a period between 3200 and 2700 BCE, also known as the Hafeet Period or the Hafeet Cultural Horizon. The tombs and their contents reveal Al Ain’s role at the crossroads of Mesopotamian trade.
During the Iron Age, the inhabitants of Al Ain began using the falaj, a system that enabled water to be transported from the mountains to the plains. It led to the construction of permanent settlement sites along with agriculture. The oldest falaj, which dates back to 1000 BCE, is located at the Hili Archaeological Park. Visitors will see numerous forts in Al Ain, which along with many other historic buildings such as towers, mosques, and private palaces and residences, are reminiscent of pre-1960 before oil was discovered. The beautiful Al Jahili Fort, which is the birthplace of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s first president, was built in 1891 to defend the city and protect palm groves. It now houses a permanent exhibition of work by British adventurer Wilfred Thesiger, who crossed the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) in the 1940s. The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage also holds the annual Al Ain Classics music festival in the grounds of the fort.

Museums To learn more about the history of Al Ain, a visit to the city’s museums is a must. Al Ain National Museum is divided into two main sections – ethnographical and archaeological – and provides an overview of the country’s traditions and culture as well as information on the people who inhabited the area up to 8,000 years ago. As well as artefacts, there is also an interesting collection of photographs showing Abu Dhabi in the 1960s.

A revolving feast at Al Fanar As Abu Dhabi’s only revolving restaurant, Al Fanar is automatically one of the most extraordinary places to eat in the capital. However, even without this signature feature, which takes diners a full 360 degrees and affords views of the city, sea and the islands on the way, Al Fanar would still stand out from the culinary crowd. The menu, overseen by executive chef Pierre Olivier Petit, offers a creative selection of gourmet international dishes all artfully arranged to look as good as they taste. MILK MONITOR The wider world is only just waking up to the health benefits of camel milk, but in the UAE, this highly nutritious beverage is a traditional dietary staple
Q Not so long ago, the basic Emirati diet consisted fundamentally of dates and camel milk. For Bedouin desert dwellers, little else was readily available. Then, oil was discovered in the region, the UAE was formed and the arid, desert landscape rapidly transformed with the arrival of international restaurant and supermarket chains. The traditional Bedouin way of life changed and with it went the former emphasis on local food sources. With diminished demand, camel milk faded from the culinary scene and entered into a long hiatus. Then, around two years ago, interest began to pick up as people reawakened to its nutritional benefits, leading to an unprecedented demand, according to April Hobbs at Al Ain Dairy. “In the last 18 months especially, camel milk has seen quite a resurgence. Both the media and the general public have become fascinated with the general subject. There is a certain novelty value that has captured the imagination of expats, but what seems to have sparked this surge in interest is the growing awareness of its nutritional qualities,” she explains. A quick glance at the nutritional profile of camel milk makes it easy to see how a simple diet was sufficient to keep Bedouin tribes healthy. With enough nutrients to sustain a person through the whole day, it is a rich source of proteins, vitamins and minerals while also being significantly lower in cholesterol than other forms of milk. In fact, from a health perspective, camel milk runs circles around the more commonly consumed cows’ milk. According to Hobbs, it is one of the most nutritious foods (or beverages) a person can consume, with 10 times more antiviral properties and three times more vitamin C than cows’ milk. According to Hobbs: “Camel milk is the closest to human mothers’ milk and our bodies literally thrive on it.” Its outstanding health credentials have landed camel milk on the World Health Organisation’s exclusive superfood list, alongside nutritional heavyweights like green tea and blueberries. Now, with its reputation growing, demand is spreading overseas to such an extent that camel farms are struggling to meet it.

“Camel milk is in significant undersupply for the current demand, both globally and here in the UAE. The other challenge is the production. This type of milk farming is highly specialised and, while there are many small holdings and hobby farms around the world still milking by hand the old, traditional way, there are very few that are fully integrated vertical farms equipped for full production. The result of this is that supply cannot meet demand,” says Hobbs. It’s not just basic milk that consumers want either. As its popularity grows, people want to try new forms like camel-milk cheese, a product that has long baffled farmers’ attempts to create it, but is soon to be released in the UAE. Camel-milk ice cream will also make its UAE debut before long. Meanwhile, visitors can become involved in the craze for camel-milk products by trying camel milk chocolate, made by Al
Nassma or sipping on a Camelcino in the lobby lounge at Jumeriah at Etihad Towers. Alternatively, they can just pick up a bottle of camel milk at most larger supermarkets, where it is available in a range of flavours from rose, cardamom and saffron to chocolate, date and laban. Some people, Hobbs agrees, find camel milk to be something of an acquired taste so the flavoured varieties are there to provide an alternative way of reaping its health benefits. However, it’s not just the health benefits that make camels’ milk worth trying. From a visitor’s perspective, drinking a cup of camel milk in the UAE is like eating pizza in Italy or Haggis in Scotland – it’s a way to experience the local culture and get a taste of traditional dietary staples. As Hobbs states: “Visitors should try it simply because camel milk is such an important part of Emirati culture and history. Tasting it is an extension of the UAE experience.”

Capital of culture Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island will soon be home to the world-famous Louvre and Guggenheim museums. The Abu Dhabi government is spending over US$1 billion to bring these cultural landmarks to the emirate. They have also signed some of the world’s most renowned architects, including Frank Gehry who shot to fame with his design of the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain, and Jean Nouvel, who designed the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. In addition, the Zayed National Museum will be designed by Lord Norman Foster, making the Cultural District the only place in the world to have buildings designed by five Pritzker Prize winners. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to open in 2013, while the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open some time later. Al Ain National Museum The oldest museum in the UAE, Al Ain National Museum has displays dating from the Stone Age to the country’s preoil era with photography exhibits as well as jewellery, tools, pottery and other artefacts. Cultural Foundation Located in the grounds of the Old Fort, the Cultural Foundation hosts year-round exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography, pottery and Arabic calligraphy. Heritage Village A must-see destination for traditional Emirati handicrafts, the Heritage Village features reconstructions of Bedouin tents, old fishing villages and traditional markets. Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum Built in 1937, the palace of the late Sheikh Zayed was converted to a museum and opened in 2001. Visitors won’t find a large collection of photographs or exhibits because Sheikh Zayed wanted the royal palace and residence to be a true reflection of his country’s culture prior to the discovery of oil.

History in the making The earliest known habitation in this part of the world dates back as far as 5500 BCE. However, it was in 1971, when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi's ruler from 1966 to 2004, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai from 1958 to 1990, set the wheels in motion with their neighbouring sheikhdoms, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ajman (Ras Al Khaimah joined in 1972) to form an alliance. Prior to this, the seven emirates had lived in relative harmony, united through a protectorate treaty with Great Britain, which earned them the name the Trucial States. It was a successful partnership, but in 1968 the United Kingdom ended the treaty. In order to maintain security, Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid reached out to their neighbours and in 1971 they signed an agreement, which signified the creation of the United Arab Emirates.

Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Abu Dhabi. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. It costs approximately AED35 to AED50 to smoke and the most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling as many as 50 cigarettes. If you’re after an authentic taste of Middle Eastern culture, however, smoking shisha is a must. I came to the UAE in 2006 and recently gave up a 13-year career in journalism to pursue my true calling as an artist. Since then I have travelled all over the region to get an understanding of the people and culture, but settled in Abu Dhabi after finding it a wonderful place to live and work. To me the city, with its grand hotels, towering skyscrapers and rich history, stands for prosperity and heritage. My ideal weekend here is spent visiting the cultural attractions like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque or spending an afternoon exploring one of the museums. For a relaxing Saturday, I love soaking in the pool or indulging in a treatment at one of the capital’s many luxurious spas, like So Spa in Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche or the Mizan Spa at Roccoforte Abu Dhabi. In the evening, I’ll often meet friends for a casual dinner at Filini in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Abu Dhabi Yas Island. Good Indian and Italian food are always on my radar and Filini serves excellent food in a lovely, poolside setting. It’s a relaxing yet
atmospheric place to sit, sip a cocktail and enjoy delicious Italian food while looking out over the pool with the golf course in the background. If I’m looking to dine in a really smart venue, then I go to one of the restaurants at the Emirates Palace like Mezlai, which was the first Emirati restaurant in the UAE, or Mezzaluna, the hotel’s gourmet Italian eaterie. Alternatively, I like to walk along the Corniche and choose a restaurant or café along there where I know I can enjoy a nice meal before stunning ocean views. One of the things I am most looking forward to is the launch of the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Yas Island. I can’t wait. I’m also really looking forward to seeing the completed Mazdar City, an entirely eco-friendly city that will rely on solar and other renewable energy sources with a sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste ecology. That’s one of the best things about Abu Dhabi – there is always an adventurous project on the horizon and new things to look forward to.
