—— The art of precision timekeeping is woven into the very fabric of Montblanc’s DNA. Minerva, the forerunner of what is now the Montblanc Manufacture, set the pace as one of the pioneers of groundbreaking professional chronograph technology and the new TimeWalker Collection recognises and celebrates the importance of performance and accuracy in the world of motor racing. At the forefront of the collection is the TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic. Sleek yet sporty, its 43mm stainless steel case is satinated for scratch resistance, and to create an automotive look. The stylish timepiece features the maison’s iconic unidirectional rotating black bezel and has been constructed in high-shine black ceramic for ultimate durability. The black DLC crown and chronograph pushers have been given a knurl effect with fine grooves, both to match the bezel and for better grip, recalling the design of vintage petrol caps. Like all the watches in the TimeWalker Collection, the TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic has been subjected to the Montblanc Laboratory Test 500, simulating real-life wear for over 500 hours. Each element has been meticulously crafted for easy readability; from the black rhodium-plated dauphine hands injected with SuperLuminova to the precise silvery-white minute track enhanced with both SuperLuminova and red markers for the 15-minute marks. The raised, vertically brushed numerals evoke the appearance of vintage dashboards, and the bright red chronograph seconds hand provides welcome contrast and pays tribute to the brand’s heritage

with a tip sculpted in the form of the Minerva arrow. The result is a display that can be read at a glance, at work, at play, and on the racing track. The case back is fitted with a smoked glass opening, allowing the wearer to see the movement, a design feature reminiscent of the glass windows that cover powerful V12 engines. The straps provide another reference to the golden era of motor racing, with perforation holes that mimic the design of vintage leather driving gloves. The raised grip pattern on the lining ensures comfort and adhesion, and the triple folding clasp was developed especially for the Montblanc TimeWalker Collection, to create a safe and flexible grip. Available in leather, rubber or a performance metal bracelet, each is emblematic of vintage style.

LUXURY REBORN ——— Concierge visits Montblanc’s revamped flagship boutique in Dubai and discovers the enduring success of the luxury brand

Nicolas Baretzki might be the CEO of Montblanc International, but when it came to the very special re-design of the brand’s flagship boutique in The Dubai Mall, he thought of himself simply as a customer. “I had to ask myself: why would I enter a Montblanc boutique? What do I expect to find there? What would bring me in, and what would make me stay?” For Baretzki, it was important to create a place that felt high-end but not ostentatious, a space that could cohesively showcase Montblanc’s complex and varied offering in a way that was easy to explore and understand. This ambitious vision has been realised in the thoughtfully designed space from acclaimed architect Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance. Sleek and stylish, each element of the boutique is the result of careful consideration, including the elegant, curved lines that evoke the art of calligraphy. The leather goods section, for example, incorporates dark woods and warm colours, with a tactile display that encourages visitors to experience the feel of the products. In the writing instruments area, the textured white walls are reminiscent of Japanese paper. Throughout the boutique, black lacquered wall panels recall the distinctive Montblanc precious resin. A highlight is the private collectors’ lounge, where visitors can view limited-edition products and experience bespoke customisation services. “Dubai is only the second city in the world to have one of these lounges,” says Baretzki. “The first one is in Hamburg, the city where we have our headquarters. We also wanted this store to be what we

26

call a high artistry boutique, meaning a space where we could house a permanent collection featuring high-end pieces, limited-edition products and items with special stories behind them. If you want to see the exceptional, you have to come to The Dubai Mall.” Zaim Kamal, Montblanc’s creative director, notes that even in this age of e-commerce, bricks and mortar stores still have an essential function. “The way we shop has changed. People can buy products through their smartphones at the click of a button. But to understand a product, to connect to a brand, you still need a physical store. A boutique is a place where a client can immerse themselves in the story and heritage of a maison, and so it was important that we created an environment in which this could happen.” “This is why we spoke to Duchaufour-Lawrance, because he’s very good at creating welcoming spaces. I wanted it to be like walking through someone’s house and discovering who they are – private and intimate, luxury without intimidation.” The ability to recognise the importance of heritage and a classic approach, while simultaneously focusing on cutting edge innovations, has made Montblanc a powerful player in the luxury world. Is this the reason for Montblanc’s resilience when, perhaps, other brands in the sector have not continued to fare as well? “That’s a very good question, and one that doesn’t have an easy answer,” says Baretzki, “because today’s success is the result of many different factors. We are a complex maison with so many different

categories: high-end to entry price; analogue to digital; we invest a lot into our boutiques but recognise the growing world of e-commerce. If I had to choose just one reason for our success I would say that it’s our consistency. Because even though our portfolio is so diverse, there is one clear vision. There is just one Montblanc.” Baretzki also notes that the maison has managed to achieve the tricky feat of appealing to a younger luxury-loving audience. “I believe that Montblanc is the perfect brand for millennials. We are all about defining a clear purpose with our products, creating meaningful stories – and purpose and storytelling are important to a young person’s identity. Millennials value individuality – they want to be successful in their own way, travel in their own way – and they want brands that are discrete and understated, not outspoken or garish. And that is very much in keeping with Montblanc’s identity.” Like its millennial audience, the maison’s focus is firmly on the future. Innovation is inherent to the identity – Montblanc began with the invention of the safety fountain pen – and continues to be a leading force in the digital world, with its luxury smartwatch and groundbreaking augmented paper. “You have to find the right synergy between the analogue and digital world,” says Baretzki. “The augmented paper, for example, lets you use this traditionally beautiful, leather-bound stationery, but the convenience and functionality of the digital aspect lets you take it everywhere.”

While Baretzki admits that there are some exciting new innovative products in the pipeline, he remains tight-lipped about what they might be. However, he is excited to talk about one new project – the creation of a Montblanc museum. “As much as we value technology, innovation and collaboration, the brand is very much also about culture, history and heritage. That is why we are planning to create a museum in Hamburg to celebrate not just Montblanc, but the world of writing instruments. “I think that even though we all use tablets, smartphones and so on, it’s essential that we realise and celebrate the importance and value of writing instruments, beyond mere functionality. If everything goes according to plan, the museum is forecast to open at the same time as Expo 2020 Dubai, so that will be a very busy year.” —— Visit Montblanc’s boutique at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island to discover more. TIMED TO PERFECTION ——— As one of watchmaking’s great innovators, Roger Dubuis has partnered with icons of the motoring world for its latest cutting-edge collections

From the moment the company was founded by master watchmaker Roger Dubuis and designer Carlos Dias almost 25 years ago, it brought something fresh to the watch industry. Avant-garde design quickly became a hallmark for a contemporary new brand that did things differently. Since then, bold designs, precision engineering and a visionary approach have come to define the watchmaking Maison, which is known for its extraordinary timekeeping machines. It’s no surprise then that Roger Dubuis has once again set itself apart by partnering with Lamborghini Squadra Corse and Pirelli to enter into new areas of industrial materials and aesthetics to produce a series of daring timepieces that are the talk of the watch world.

Parallels have long been drawn between the worlds of horology and motor racing, and the partnership is a natural one. Precision timing has been integral to motor racing since the golden age of the sport, and the dual disciplines of racing and watchmaking share similar core values: a creative approach to pushing the boundaries of technological innovation, meticulous attention to detail and a devotion to aesthetic appeal that does not compromise on performance. This intuitive partnership is embodied by the trailblazing new collaboration between Lamborghini and Roger Dubuis. Both synonymous with exclusive customer experiences, it is at the intersection between Italian design and Swiss precision that these two iconic brands converge. The luxury watch Maison and the motorsports giant share an ethos that values unique, fearless visual design alongside technical excellence. Fittingly, the partnership was unveiled at an exclusive event in the heart of Sant’Agata Bolognese, the legendary headquarters of Lamborghini. As part of the pairing, Roger Dubuis is the main sponsor of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo races in 2018, where the new Huracán Super Trofeo Evo will take centre stage. For now, it is the groundbreaking luxury timepiece collection – The Excalibur Aventador S – that has all eyes on this partnership.

The instantly iconic watch, whose mechanisms are inspired by the engine of the Aventador S and the Huracàn Super Trofeo EVO, is available in two limited editions, one comprising 88 pieces and the other just eight. The former is characterised by the distinctive Lamborghini Giallo Orion yellow paint code, while the latter, even more exclusive series, features the Arancio Argos orange tones. The first timepiece – the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Aventador S Giallo Orion – will be limited to 88 pieces worldwide and feature distinctive yellow accents. The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Aventador S Arancio Argos differs in colour scheme, materials and availability. A rare edition with only eight pieces available worldwide, the watch has been created with a carbon-sheet moulded compound and features bold orange accents. The meticulously designed mechanism uses a multilayered carbon based on the same technology utilised in the iconic supercars and also features a power control display on the dial forming a central signature that recalls the classic Lamborghini dashboard. Each watch is driven by the engine of Roger Dubuis’ distinctive Duotor (double balance wheel) calibre, distinguished by engine strut bars visible on the skeletonised movement, creating the impression of a whirring machine beneath a transparent engine hood.

The double balance wheels themselves are inclined at an angle that mimics the design of a sleek Lamborghini engine, supported by holders shaped like triangular wheel suspension assemblies. Roger Dubuis CEO Jean-Marc Pontroué noted: “Like Lamborghini, we deliver ‘engines’ distinguished by their extreme quality and cutting-edge performance. But like the owners of such exceptional Italian hypercars, our customers are above all interested in standout aesthetics that ensure instant recognition matched by ultra exclusivity and rarity.” The momentous collaboration marks the second automotive partnership for the luxury Swiss brand in recent months, following a collaboration with Pirelli tyres earlier this year. The Italian manufacturer is the sole tyre supplier for the Formula 1, the pinnacle of motor racing sweeping into Abu Dhabi this month for the season finale at Yas Marina Circuit. Issued as an 88-piece limited edition, the Excalibur Spider Pirelli - Automatic Skeleton models feature the distinctive colours

of the iconic tyre logo – yellow, red or blue – on their skeletonised flange, accentuated by a titanium black DLC crown over-moulded with matching colour stitching on the straps. The straps themselves are crafted from winning Pirelli motorsport tyre rub, featuring the distinctive Pirelli tread profile, in the ultimate nod to the brands’ shared ethos of unbeatable performance. The stunning pieces in both the Lamborghini and Pirelli partnerships are a testament to the strength of the skilled team of watchmakers at the state-of-the-art Roger Dubuis manufacture in Geneva. GOING FOR GOLD ——— As the 2017 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix roars into the capital, the sport’s leading lights have their sights set on glory

The introduction of new rules governing the design of cars has seen one of the most exciting seasons to date. This year lower, wider and faster cars are taking to the track, making for a thrilling spectacle for fans

Every November since 2009 something special happens in Abu Dhabi. Amid a flurry of activity, for one weekend the city is transformed into the heart of the motor racing world. The centre of all the action is Yas Marina Circuit where top teams, world-class drivers and showstopping cars descend for the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Thousands of excited spectators – fans of the sport as well as those there for the electric atmosphere and entertainment – pack into the state-of-the-art venue to take in the spectacle in one of the world’s most impressive settings. Surrounded by the piercing blue waters of the Arabian Gulf, Yas Island offers the perfect playground for the star-studded showcase, with the best seats in the house to be had from any one of the scores of private yachts that sail along the coast to moor atYas Marina for race weekend. The unmistakable façade of Yas Viceroy hotel, which sits astride the track, is another premium vantage point, while there is of course a choice of options right in the mix, atYas Marina Circuit itself. Marking the Formula 1 season finale, the Abu Dhabi leg is special not just because of its unmatched surrounds, but because it runs from day to night, a first for the sport when it launched in the UAE capital.

44

By the time drivers and their teams get to the starting line in Abu Dhabi on November 26, they will be nearing the end of a 20-race run which started in March and has taken them from Australia to Azerbaijan, from Bahrain to Brazil. To stage the grand finale, preparations atYas Marina Circuit are just as lengthy, with work beginning almost as soon as the last lap is completed, 12 months before. “The preparations, planning and organisation of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a 12-month ‘always-on’ process for us. When we finish the actual race weekend, we’re straight into a delivery programme for the up-and-coming year,” explains sales and marketing director for Yas Marina Circuit, Nick McElwee. “It’s everything from making sure the track and support areas for the teams are in perfect condition, to planning for the logistics of hosting many thousands of spectators, as well as arranging the entertainment which is of course such a huge part of the weekend.” To date, almost three million visitors have poured into the capital for the Formula 1 festivities, with the weekend’s concerts easily one of the highlights of the UAE’s events calendar. Confirmed for this year’s event is a line-up of some of the biggest names in the business, with

Calvin Harris, Mumford & Sons, Kendrick Lamar and P!NK all set to grace the du Arena stage, from November 23 to 26. It’s also the close of Yasalam, the largest race-host city festival in the world bringing music, community events and sport to Abu Dhabi city andYas Island. At the circuit itself, there is a host of options for amazing raceday experiences with a choice of seating options that take you right to the heart of the action. Ticket holders can get a close-up view of the teams at Thursday afternoon’s Public Pit Lane walk. It’s also possible to book your own pit lane time slot for an insider glimpse of how the teams perform under pressure. Merchandise can be signed by the drivers at a number of autograph sessions taking place throughout the weekend. Or, see it all in style at a luxurious Friday brunch, with track views and an incredible gourmet feast. Elsewhere on the island, for those able to tear themselves away from the racing action, there’s everything from theme parks to plush shopping malls to explore. Keep the motoring theme going at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, an incredible theme park dedicated to all things Ferrari, or head to Yas Waterworld and cool off at the capital’s top water park. For those keen to indulge in a spot of shopping, get race

ready at Yas Mall, where a host of boutiques and premium retailers await, as well as a great selection of entertainment. Once the race is won and the concerts have come to an end, it’s really just the start of the night’s excitement as a series of highglamour after parties pop up all across Yas Island. One of the most exclusive is Amber Lounge, where you’re likely to rub shoulders with A-list guests and drivers out to celebrate another amazing season. As you might expect from such an occasion, the party is an exclusive affair and Amber Lounge amps up the wow factor with international DJ sets and celebrity performances in a night that’s guaranteed to be unforgettable. McElwee adds: “There’s a huge buzz across the entire race weekend and whether you’re in one of the corporate boxes or in the grandstand with family and friends, the sense of occasion is very apparent. And an upside of all the rigour in planning is that all of us working at the event can actually enjoy the weekend, watching the hard work come to life.” For more information on this year’s event and all the entertainment on offer, visit: yasmarinacircuit.com

SIGNATURE STYLE ——— Executive sous chef Idin Asmitha at Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara reveals why a personal touch is the most important ingredient in every meal

Celebrated for its unparalleled hospitality, Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara brings the Arabian adventure to life in the capital. The property boasts the best of both worlds, combining luxury leisure facilities with a tranquil setting by the waters of Abu Dhabi’s protected mangroves district. And with the sheer array of dining options on offer, from premium Thai cuisine at Pachaylen to Mediterranean feasts at The Pool Deck, visitors can look forward to a treat. “Although distinct in character, the underlying philosophy uniting every dining experience at Anantara is world-class service, straight from the heart,” reveals executive sous chef Idin Asmitha, who believes “the most amazing stories begin in the kitchen.” Always on hand to ensure the smooth sailing of operations behind the scenes, from the sourcing of ingredients to the presentation of the dish, the talented chef’s efforts have helped carve a niche for the hotel on the capital’s vibrant dining scene. “Be it modern Middle Eastern fare or rustic Italian dishes, every cuisine is well represented at Anantara, which only highlights the culinary prowess of our multicultural team.” Ask him what a typical day looks like and he promptly responds: “Every moment at the hotel is as eventful as the next, there’s always something unique to look forward to and something exciting to bring to the table, quite literally.” Having discovered a passion for the culinary arts at a very young age, Asmitha credits his culinary abilities to his mother. He says: “One of my fondest childhood memories was helping my mother prepare our family dinners. It was those moments spent in the kitchen that made me realise how a personal touch can make or break your dish. A similar approach at Anantara ensures we craft only the very best experiences. Following a recipe is easy but infusing it with your unique style, that’s the special ingredient which makes a meal truly extraordinary.”

60

Asmitha’s journey is filled with plenty of career highlights. The wealth of experience he brings to Anantara has been honed working at several fivestar hotel chains in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Dubai since 1993. Over the last half decade, he has come to be intimately involved with the entire food operations process at Eastern Mangroves Hotel, his primary responsibility being to maintain the brand’s culinary standards at the highest possible level. Other day-to-day activities see the chef involved in menu planning, studying market trends and monitoring local competition. Of all the restaurants at the hotel, Asmitha has a special fondness for Ingredients, the all-day dining venue featuring gourmet delights from around the globe. “A feast for the senses”, as he describes it, diners will find themselves spoilt for choice with the extensive selection of Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean specialities prepared at five different kitchens within the property. Asmitha believes Ingredients has a winning formula because it caters to the capital’s multicultural audience. He explains: “Serving a mixed bag of people means familiarising yourself with their specific customs, and that opens up new avenues of exploration in the kitchen. It expands your horizon as a chef and puts your creativity to the test. And I find the best way to meet every guest’s expectation is by simply infusing time-honoured culinary traditions with our signature style.” When it comes to powering through everyday challenges, Asmitha believes there’s nothing wrong in sinking into some comfort food every once in a while. As for his go-to dish, the Thai Flower Dumpling, a traditional appetiser popularly known as chor muang served at Pachaylen, always does the trick. —— For more information about the restaurants at Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara or to make a reservation, contact: 02 6561000

MY LI F E

ROUDY PETERSEN ———

The talented chef gives Concierge a glimpse into his life in the capital

After exploring various dining cultures in my home country, Mauritius, as well as in Paris and Doha, I moved to the UAE capital in 2014 to be part of the city’s burgeoning dining scene. And my new role as head chef at Catch Abu Dhabi made transitioning to life in the emirate smoother than I expected. I love that the UAE lends itself to the ultimate five-star lifestyle. It’s amazing that we’re always spoilt for choice when looking for places to visit and things to do. Take the month ahead, for instance. November already looks packed with a host of events in the city, from the 2017 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to Taste of Abu Dhabi. From a chef’s perspective, I’d definitely recommend exploring the capital through its culinary offerings. It is one of the best ways to take in its global vibe with so many flavours, from Peruvian to Turkish treats, all in one destination. Among the many culinary gems, aside from Catch Abu Dhabi of course, the two venues that stand out for me are Tamba, an Indian restaurant offering fusion cuisine and Zuma for its flawless interpretation of Japanese food. The Al Bateen district is also home to many hidden marvels. Those looking for something a little simpler will find a host of delights around various parks in the city, especially at the many food trucks offering popular street food.

1 Saadiyat Beach  2 Arabian Nights Village

2

80

What I love the most about dining in Abu Dhabi is that there’s no such thing as an unspectacular view. Whether you’re seated at the top of a tower, by the beach or even by the street, there’s plenty to sit back and marvel at. When I’m not experimenting in the kitchen, you’ll find me cycling around the city. I especially enjoy cycling at Yas Marina Circuit and to this day, I find it hard to believe that I have the opportunity to workout on an F1 track. But when I’m looking to truly put my feet up, my go-to spot is the beach. Saadiyat Island has a special place in my heart. Every minute here feels like a vacation and the views are nothing short of amazing, especially during sunset. Having spent close to half a decade in the capital, I would consider myself remiss if I didn’t recommend a cultural experience to friends visiting from abroad. A trip to Arabian Nights Village is a must to soak up the local flavour with activities from dune bashing to camel riding. I particularly enjoy sandboarding at sunset and hiking up the dunes at sunrise. But nothing beats the charm of the perfectly clear starry sky once all the lights in the camp go out. That moment, there in the heart of the desert, for me is sheer magic.
