—— The art of precision timekeeping is woven into the very fabric of Montblanc’s DNA. Minerva, the forerunner of what is now the Montblanc manufacture, set the pace as one of the pioneers of groundbreaking professional chronograph technology, and the new TimeWalker Collection recognises and celebrates the importance of performance and accuracy in the world of motor racing. At the forefront of the collection is the TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic. Sleek yet sporty, its 43mm stainless steel case is satinated for scratch resistance, and to create an automotive look. The stylish timepiece features the maison’s iconic unidirectional rotating black bezel and has been constructed in high-shine black ceramic for ultimate durability. The black DLC crown and chronograph pushers have been given a knurl effect with fine grooves, both to match the bezel and for better grip, recalling the design of vintage petrol caps. Like all the watches in the TimeWalker Collection, the TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic has been subjected to the Montblanc Laboratory Test 500, simulating real-life wear for over 500 hours. Each element has been meticulously crafted for easy readability; from the black rhodium-plated dauphine hands injected with SuperLuminova to the precise silvery-white minute track enhanced with both SuperLuminova and red markers for the 15-minute marks. The raised, vertically brushed numerals evoke the appearance of vintage dashboards, and the bright red chronograph seconds hand provides welcome contrast and pays tribute to the brand’s heritage
with a tip sculpted in the form of the Minerva arrow. The result is a display that can be read at a glance, at work, at play, and on the racing track. The case back is fitted with a smoked glass opening, allowing the wearer to see the movement, a design feature reminiscent of the glass windows that cover powerful V12 engines. The straps provide another reference to the golden era of motor racing, with perforation holes that mimic the design of vintage leather driving gloves. The raised grip pattern on the lining ensures comfort and adhesion, and the triple folding clasp was developed especially for the Montblanc TimeWalker Collection, to create a safe and flexible grip. Available in leather, rubber or a performance metal bracelet, each is emblematic of vintage style.

INNER WORKINGS ——— Delve into the intricate art of timepiece design with the return of Dubai Watch Week this month
For horology enthusiasts in the UAE, Dubai Watch Week is undoubtedly the biggest event of the year. Since its inauguration in 2015, this celebration of the artistry and industry of watchmaking has grown exponentially, firmly establishing Dubai as a force to be reckoned with on the global scene, alongside the likes of prominent watch events such as Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) and Baselworld in Switzerland. Organised and curated by Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons and held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, this year marks the third edition of the event, taking place from November 16 to 20 in Dubai International Financial Centre. Unlike previous years, the 2017 edition will be held in a unique, purposebuilt space and according to Melika Yazdjerdi, the director of Dubai Watch Week, it is set to be bigger and better than ever. “This is the first time that we have a purpose-built structure dedicated to everything that we want to unveil. We have an amazing line up, multiple education platforms and we have expanded the capacity of the event to accommodate more visitors, more journalists, more industry experts and more horology enthusiasts.”

Unlike many other horology events in the world, Dubai Watch Week is the only non-commercial event of its kind. It was originally conceived by the Seddiqi family, who are passionate horology enthusiasts themselves, as a global event with a mission to educate the public about the world of watchmaking, facilitate networking and stimulate discussion. The latest edition will remain loyal to this original vision while offering visitors even more opportunities for immersing themselves in the watchmaking world. This year’s theme is Classic and Contemporary and will celebrate the ways in which traditional artistry and craftsmanship complements contemporary techniques and aesthetics, as well as innovative technologies. Curated by the Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons team, over 30 brands are set to be exhibited, with vintage timepieces and new models inspired by traditional watchmaking, as well as those showcasing techniques from both contemporary and heritage brands. Not only does the event celebrate the finest luxury watch brands in the world, it also attracts some of the brightest talent in the industry, and this year’s schedule of workshops, talks and masterclasses features some exceptional speakers. The list includes watchmaker Kurt Klaus, a legend of the watchmaking world at IWC Schaffhausen for more than 50 years, and the pioneer of the IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar; Christian Selmoni, Vacheron Constantin artistic director, who will speak on a panel about the artistry and aesthetics of horology; and Mohammed Abdulmagied Seddiqi, the chief commercial officer at Seddiqi Holding, who will contribute to talks on a number of topics including one on how families shape businesses from generation to generation.

The talks will take place in the revamped horology forum, a purpose-built structure that has been expanded to accommodate up to 150 seated guests, and will bring together leading watch curators, collectors, industry professionals and more. Other horology experts on the programme include Fabienne Lupo, chairwoman and managing director of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie and Christie’s Dubai regional specialist for watches, Remy Julia. The dedicated Christie’s Dubai area will feature an auction room to educate visitors on the art of bidding, and an evaluation room where collectors have the opportunity to meet with the consultants at Christie’s Dubai to have their vintage timepieces appraised. A highlight of the show will be the Mastery of Time exhibition, a ground-breaking virtual reality experience that utilises contemporary technology to allow visitors to travel back in time through watchmaking history and experience timepieces and inventions from multiple eras, from 19th century sailing watches to vintage pocket watches. Yazdjerdi reveals that this edition will see exhibitors delve into the world of watchcraft to explore its artistry. “We will have a new programme focusing on the craftsmanship of the industry in a new way; things

like enamelling, miniature painting and engraving. There are so many incredible artisans out there, and we are bringing these individuals to Dubai so that people can get to know them and their craft.” Yazdjerdi continues: “We will also have watches from the Grand Prix D’Horologerie De Géneve on display. We have a purpose-built experience so that visitors can understand these awards from a different perspective; it’s not just about the timepieces that have won, it’s about the stories behind each watch.” The fact that the Seddiqi family remains dedicated to maintaining Dubai Watch Week is a huge part of what makes it so unique and successful, according to Yazdjerdi. “We don’t want it to be commercial. When you look at existing commercial platforms, it is almost impossible to access the brands. Because our objective is the exchange of knowledge about the industry, you take the pressure away. We have removed the barriers, physically and metaphorically, and created a level playing field where everyone can connect, from collectors to clients, enthusiasts to journalists and watch experts from all sides of the industry. This is refreshing for the brands, and makes people a lot more open to conversation and easier to approach.” Another highlight of this year’s edition is set to be the creative hub, a dedicated zone where some

of the most exciting announcements in the horological industry will take place. “A lot of the brands that are participating will reveal limited editions - there will be Dubai editions, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons editions and Dubai Watch Week editions, which will be unveiled across the four days at the creative hub,” says Yazdjerdi. For those who have yet to experience Dubai Watch Week, now is the time to do so, as after this year’s edition, the show will not return for three years, to coincide with Expo 2020 Dubai. “During our first year, we had 528 VIPs. Last year, that number rose to 2,038. This year, we’re expecting over 3,000,” Yazdjerdi notes. “As you can imagine, the time and financial investment that an event of this size requires is considerable. “Going forward, we are planning to hold Dubai Watch Week every two years, so by that rule we should be back in 2019. However, we are coming back in 2020 because we want to give something back in honour of Expo 2020 Dubai, and use the event to showcase the city to the public.” —— For more information, visit dubaiwatchweek.com

LUXURY REBORN ———
Concierge visits Montblanc’s revamped flagship boutique in Dubai and discovers the enduring success of the luxury brand
Nicolas Baretzki might be the CEO of Montblanc International, but when it came to the very special re-design of the brand’s flagship boutique in The Dubai Mall, he thought of himself simply as a customer. “I had to ask myself: why would I enter a Montblanc boutique? What do I expect to find there? What would bring me in, and what would make me stay?” For Baretzki, it was important to create a place that felt high-end but not ostentatious, a space that could cohesively showcase Montblanc’s complex and varied offering in a way that was easy to explore and understand. This ambitious vision has been realised in the thoughtfully designed space from acclaimed architect Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance. Sleek and stylish, each element of the boutique is the result of careful consideration, including the elegant, curved lines that evoke the art of calligraphy. The leather goods section, for example, incorporates dark woods and warm colours, with a tactile display that encourages visitors to experience the feel of the products. In the writing instruments area, the textured white walls are reminiscent of Japanese paper. Throughout the boutique, black lacquered wall panels recall the distinctive Montblanc precious resin. A highlight is the private collectors’ lounge, where visitors can view limited-edition products and experience bespoke customisation services. “Dubai is only the second city in the world to have one of these lounges,” says Baretzki. “The first one is in Hamburg, the city where we have our headquarters. We also wanted this store to be what we

call a high artistry boutique, meaning a space where we could house a permanent collection featuring high-end pieces, limited-edition products and items with special stories behind them. If you want to see the exceptional, you have to come to The Dubai Mall.” Zaim Kamal, Montblanc’s creative director, notes that even in this age of e-commerce, bricks and mortar stores still have an essential function. “The way we shop has changed. People can buy products through their smartphones at the click of a button. But to understand a product, to connect to a brand, you still need a physical store. A boutique is a place where a client can immerse themselves in the story and heritage of a maison, and so it was important that we created an environment in which this could happen.” “This is why we spoke to Duchaufour-Lawrance, because he’s very good at creating welcoming spaces. I wanted it to be like walking through someone’s house and discovering who they are – private and intimate, luxury without intimidation.” The ability to recognise the importance of heritage and a classic approach, while simultaneously focusing on cutting edge innovations, has made Montblanc a powerful player in the luxury world. Is this the reason for Montblanc’s resilience when, perhaps, other brands in the sector have not continued to fare as well? “That’s a very good question, and one that doesn’t have an easy answer,” says Baretzki, “because today’s success is the result of many different factors. We are a complex maison with so many different

categories: high-end to entry price; analogue to digital; we invest a lot into our boutiques but recognise the growing world of e-commerce. If I had to choose just one reason for our success I would say that it’s our consistency. Because even though our portfolio is so diverse, there is one clear vision. There is just one Montblanc.” Baretzki also notes that the maison has managed to achieve the tricky feat of appealing to a younger luxury-loving audience. “I believe that Montblanc is the perfect brand for millennials. We are all about defining a clear purpose with our products, creating meaningful stories – and purpose and storytelling are important to a young person’s identity. Millennials value individuality – they want to be successful in their own way, travel in their own way – and they want brands that are discrete and understated, not outspoken or garish. And that is very much in keeping with Montblanc’s identity.” Like its millennial audience, the maison’s focus is firmly on the future. Innovation is inherent to the identity – Montblanc began with the invention of the safety fountain pen – and continues to be a leading force in the digital world, with its luxury smartwatch and groundbreaking augmented paper. “You have to find the right synergy between the analogue and digital world,” says Baretzki. “The augmented paper, for example, lets you use this traditionally beautiful, leather-bound stationery, but the convenience and functionality of the digital aspect lets you take it everywhere.”
While Baretzki admits that there are some exciting new innovative products in the pipeline, he remains tight-lipped about what they might be. However, he is excited to talk about one new project – the creation of a Montblanc museum. “As much as we value technology, innovation and collaboration, the brand is very much also about culture, history and heritage. That is why we are planning to create a museum in Hamburg to celebrate not just Montblanc, but the world of writing instruments. “I think that even though we all use tablets, smartphones and so on, it’s essential that we realise and celebrate the importance and value of writing instruments, beyond mere functionality. If everything goes according to plan, the museum is forecast to open at the same time as Expo 2020 Dubai, so that will be a very busy year.” —— Discover the latest Montblanc collections at the brand’s boutique in The Dubai Mall. TIMED TO PERFECTION ——— As one of watchmaking’s great innovators, Roger Dubuis has partnered with icons of the motoring world for its latest cutting-edge collections
From the moment the company was founded by master watchmaker Roger Dubuis and designer Carlos Dias almost 25 years ago, it brought something fresh to the watch industry. Avant-garde design quickly became a hallmark for a contemporary new brand that did things differently. Since then, bold designs, precision engineering and a visionary approach have come to define the watchmaking Maison, which is known for its extraordinary timekeeping machines. It’s no surprise then that Roger Dubuis has once again set itself apart by partnering with Lamborghini Squadra Corse and Pirelli to enter into new areas of industrial materials and aesthetics to produce a series of daring timepieces that are the talk of the watch world.

Parallels have long been drawn between the worlds of horology and motor racing, and the partnership is a natural one. Precision timing has been integral to motor racing since the golden age of the sport, and the dual disciplines of racing and watchmaking share similar core values: a creative approach to pushing the boundaries of technological innovation, meticulous attention to detail and a devotion to aesthetic appeal that does not compromise on performance. This intuitive partnership is embodied by the trailblazing new collaboration between Lamborghini and Roger Dubuis. Both synonymous with exclusive customer experiences, it is at the intersection between Italian design and Swiss precision that these two iconic brands converge. The luxury watch Maison and the motorsports giant share an ethos that values unique, fearless visual design alongside technical excellence. Fittingly, the partnership was unveiled at an exclusive event in the heart of Sant’Agata Bolognese, the legendary headquarters of Lamborghini. As part of the pairing, Roger Dubuis is the main sponsor of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo races in 2018, where the new Huracán Super Trofeo Evo will take centre stage. For now, it is the groundbreaking luxury timepiece collection – The Excalibur Aventador S – that has all eyes on this partnership.

The instantly iconic watch, whose mechanisms are inspired by the engine of the Aventador S and the Huracàn Super Trofeo Evo, is available in two limited editions, one comprising 88 pieces and the other just eight. The former is characterised by the distinctive Lamborghini Giallo Orion yellow paint code, while the latter, even more exclusive series, features the Arancio Argos orange tones. The first timepiece – the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Aventador S Giallo Orion – will be limited to 88 pieces worldwide and feature distinctive yellow accents. The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Aventador S Arancio Argos differs in colour scheme, materials and availability. A rare edition with only eight pieces available worldwide, the watch has been created with a carbon-sheet moulded compound and features bold orange accents. The meticulously designed mechanism uses a multilayered carbon based on the same technology utilised in the iconic supercars and also features a power control display on the dial forming a central signature that recalls the classic Lamborghini dashboard. Each watch is driven by the engine of Roger Dubuis’ distinctive Duotor (double balance wheel) calibre, distinguished by engine strut bars visible on the skeletonised movement, creating the impression of a whirring machine beneath a transparent engine hood.

The double balance wheels themselves are inclined at an angle that mimics the design of a sleek Lamborghini engine, supported by holders shaped like triangular wheel suspension assemblies. Roger Dubuis CEO Jean-Marc Pontroué noted: “Like Lamborghini, we deliver ‘engines’ distinguished by their extreme quality and cutting-edge performance. But like the owners of such exceptional Italian hypercars, our customers are above all interested in standout aesthetics that ensure instant recognition matched by ultra exclusivity and rarity.” The momentous collaboration marks the second automotive partnership for the luxury Swiss brand in recent months, following a collaboration with Pirelli tyres earlier this year. The Italian manufacturer is the sole tyre supplier for the Formula 1, the pinnacle of motor racing sweeping into Abu Dhabi this month for the season finale at Yas Marina Circuit. Issued as an 88-piece limited edition, the Excalibur Spider Pirelli - Automatic Skeleton models feature the distinctive colours
of the iconic tyre logo – yellow, red or blue – on their skeletonised flange, accentuated by a titanium black DLC crown over-moulded with matching colour stitching on the straps. The straps themselves are crafted from winning Pirelli motorsport tyre rub, featuring the distinctive Pirelli tread profile, in the ultimate nod to the brands’ shared ethos of unbeatable performance. The stunning pieces in both the Lamborghini and Pirelli partnerships are a testament to the strength of the skilled team of watchmakers at the state-of-the-art Roger Dubuis manufacture in Geneva. Here an industry-leading research and development department is responsible for bringing the brand’s innovations to life and pushing technical boundaries. Throughout it all, a passion for creativity and stand-out aesthetics shines through in each and every design with even more special creations yet to come from the groundbreaking manufacture. GOING FOR GOLD ——— As the 2017 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix roars into the capital, the sport’s leading lights have their sights set on glory
53
The introduction of new rules governing the design of cars has seen one of the most exciting seasons to date. This year lower, wider and faster cars are taking to the track, making for a thrilling spectacle for fans
Every November since 2009 something special happens in Abu Dhabi. Amid a flurry of activity, for one weekend the city is transformed into the heart of the motor racing world. The centre of all the action is Yas Marina Circuit where top teams, world-class drivers and showstopping cars descend for the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Thousands of excited spectators – fans of the sport as well as those there for the electric atmosphere and entertainment – pack into the state-of-the-art venue to take in the spectacle in one of the world’s most impressive settings. Surrounded by the piercing blue waters of the Arabian Gulf, Yas Island offers the perfect playground for the star-studded showcase, with the best seats in the house to be had from any one of the scores of private yachts that sail along the coast to moor atYas Marina for race weekend. The unmistakable façade of Yas Viceroy hotel, which sits astride the track, is another premium vantage point, while there is of course a choice of options right in the mix, atYas Marina Circuit itself. Marking the Formula 1 season finale, the Abu Dhabi leg is special not just because of its unmatched surrounds, but because it runs from day to night, a first for the sport when it launched in the UAE capital.
54
By the time drivers and their teams get to the starting line in Abu Dhabi on November 26, they will be nearing the end of a 20-race run which started in March and has taken them from Australia to Azerbaijan, from Bahrain to Brazil. To stage the grand finale, preparations atYas Marina Circuit are just as lengthy, with work beginning almost as soon as the last lap is completed, 12 months before. “The preparations, planning and organisation of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a 12-month ‘always-on’ process for us. When we finish the actual race weekend, we’re straight into a delivery programme for the up-and-coming year,” explains sales and marketing director for Yas Marina Circuit, Nick McElwee. “It’s everything from making sure the track and support areas for the teams are in perfect condition, to planning for the logistics of hosting many thousands of spectators, as well as arranging the entertainment which is of course such a huge part of the weekend.” To date, almost three million visitors have poured into the capital for the Formula 1 festivities, with the weekend’s concerts easily one of the highlights of the UAE’s events calendar. Confirmed for this year’s event is a line-up of some of the biggest names in the business,

This year’s ticket options include the return of the GP Parks Pass, a three-day package that also gives unlimited access to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld during race weekend. with Calvin Harris, Mumford & Sons, Kendrick Lamar and P!NK all set to grace the stage at the du Arena, from November 23 to 26. It’s also the close of Yasalam, the largest race-host city festival in the world bringing music, community events and sport to Abu Dhabi city and Yas Island. At the circuit itself, there is a host of options for amazing raceday experiences with a choice of seating options that take you right to the heart of the action. Ticket holders can get a close-up view of the teams at Thursday afternoon’s Public Pit Lane walk. It’s also possible to book your own pit lane time slot for an insider glimpse of how the teams perform under pressure. Merchandise can be signed by the drivers at a number of autograph sessions taking place throughout the weekend. Or, see it all in style at a luxurious Friday brunch, with track views and an incredible gourmet feast. Elsewhere on the island, for those able to tear themselves away from the racing action, there’s everything from theme parks to plush shopping malls to explore. Keep the motoring theme going at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, an incredible theme park dedicated to all things Ferrari, or head toYas Waterworld and cool off at the capital’s top water
park. For those keen to indulge in a spot of shopping, get race ready at Yas Mall, where a host of boutiques and premium retailers await. Once the race is won and the concerts have come to an end, it’s really just the start of the night’s excitement as a series of highglamour after parties pop up all across Yas Island. One of the most exclusive is Amber Lounge, where you’re likely to rub shoulders with A-list guests and drivers out to celebrate another amazing season. As you might expect from such an occasion, the party is an exclusive affair and Amber Lounge amps up the wow factor with international DJ sets and celebrity performances in a night that’s guaranteed to be unforgettable. McElwee adds: “There’s a huge buzz across the entire race weekend and whether you’re in one of the corporate boxes or in the grandstand with family and friends, the sense of occasion is very apparent. And an upside of all the rigour in planning is that all of us working at the event can actually enjoy the weekend, watching the hard work come to life.” For more information on this year’s event and all the entertainment on offer, visit: yasmarinacircuit.com

WORLD CLASS ——— Maurice Fitzgerald, executive chef, Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort talks travel and culinary inspiration
What do a Swiss opera house, a luxury Japanese cruise liner and a five-star Dubai beach resort have in common? The answer is Maurice Fitzgerald. The executive chef at Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort has over two decades of experience working in diverse locations all over the world. For Fitzgerald, a love of travel is integral to his passion for food and his evolution as a chef. “In Switzerland, I learned a lot of the classic techniques and honed my knowledge of traditional French food, plus I was exposed to the mix of French, German and Italian cuisine. I worked in Austria, where I experienced the coldest winters of my life. During that time, I worked with many Japanese chefs, which is how I later ended up working on a five-star Japanese cruise liner.” The Irishman, who was born in County Kerry, also worked in Dublin’s award-winning One Pico, his last stop before moving to Dubai. He still spends time during the summer travelling (and eating) his way around Europe, and his winters are spent in Thailand. The international experience has proved invaluable at Thai property Anantara, where he works across a diverse array of restaurants offering different cuisines. “At Beach House, we serve very good Mediterranean food. Bushman’s is our Australian restaurant, where we carefully source quality meats and are always trying new things, from wagyu to kangaroo. Our signature restaurant is the fantastic Mekong where we serve a mixture of Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese influenced cuisine.” Fitzgerald admits that it’s European café Revo where you’ll find the food he is most likely to cook on his days off: homely, comforting dishes, like slowbraised stews that have been bubbling on the stove for hours. “We also have a brilliant Friday brunch, the Fork and Cork brunch, at our all-day dining restaurant Crescendo, which is hugely popular,” he adds. As Dubai’s restaurant scene becomes increasingly competitive – he estimates that around 400 new restaurants have opened in the city in the last year alone – what is it about Anantara that keeps diners returning? “Consistency is key. The meal should taste the same, whether they order it on a Monday or on a Friday. Good quality produce is essential – when you buy the best, you don’t have to play with the food too much. Authenticity is
62
also important – we source as many authentic ingredients from around the world as possible, and the fact that we’re a Thai brand and have a Thai chef de cuisine, gives us a strong identity. “Having the right team in place is also crucial to our success. When your team is happy, they put more love into their work. I believe that you can taste when food has been cooked with love, and it keeps guests coming back. “You’ve also got to be creative – we have to be able to come up with new, inspiring concepts that keep people engaged.” In a creative move last year, Fitzgerald organised a world record-breaking event within the hotel by creating the biggest ever serving of mango sticky rice. The mammoth dish weighed over 2,800 kilogrammes and included the use of around 1,000 kilogrammes of rice, 500 litres of coconut milk and 300 kilogrammes of mango. Thanks to the team’s efforts, the hotel now holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest ever mango sticky rice. After the event, the enormous dish was divided up into containers and sent to labour camps around the city. The following week, Anantara came alive once again with the arrival of the Gourmet Food Festival, which saw a host of celebrity chefs from around the world, including Tom Walton and Marike van Beurden, descend on the hotel for a week of cooking, offering guests a unique opportunity to sample their dishes. At home, Fitzgerald takes a healthy approach. “I believe you are what you eat, so I like to eat well. I’ve cut down on sugar, even though I love sweet things, I’ve been gluten-free for the last year. I jog and I probably walk around 15,000 steps a day just around the resort. “To de-stress, I play golf. Being a chef can be stressful, but I love what I do. It’s more than just a job. The kitchen team are like my family, and it makes me so happy to see guests coming back again and again to eat in our restaurants. “I keep striving to do better. Someone told me very early on in my career that ‘you’re only as good as your last meal’. That’s why I’ve got to keep pushing.” —— For more information or to make a reservation at any of the restaurants in Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort, contact: 04 5678888

—— After a brief hiatus during the summer months, Le Meridien Mina Seyahi’s popular seafood restaurant has returned. With its white washed furniture, relaxed beachside setting and casual menu, Fish Beach Taverna feels like a taste of the Mediterranean in the heart of Dubai. Here, it is all about the quality of the ingredients; the restaurant sources the finest, freshest seafood from Turkey and Greece, served alongside impeccably prepared produce. The menu combines inspiration from the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Start your feast with some hot and cold sharing plates – think grilled calamari, stuffed eggplant or mussels – followed by hearty fish casseroles, ranging from grilled tiger prawns with chilli flakes to pan-fried seabass cooked in white wine. Arrive early and linger late over dessert – there are few restaurants better placed for watching the sunset over the ocean and the Dubai Marina skyline. 1 to 3 Fish Beach Taverna, Le Meridien Mina Seyahi 4 & 5 Key West, Nikki Beach Resort & Spa

KEY WEST
—— Located in the luxurious Nikki Beach Resort & Spa, Key West brings the flavours of the Florida Keys to Dubai with a diverse culinary feast influenced by the Caribbean, Florida and Latin America. Having opened earlier this year, the restaurant comes into its own during the cooler months, thanks to its chic outdoor terrace with laid-back, minimalist furnishings – from benches to bean bag chairs – overlooking the sparkling waters of the Arabian Gulf. Guests can dig their toes into the soft sand as they tuck into a selection of tasty dishes and enjoy a riot of bright flavours. Some of the highlights of the menu include the fresh, zesty seabass ceviche with passionfruit, seafood sliders with blackened fish fillet, and crispy lobster mac and cheese tots. The BBQ spare ribs and jerk chicken drumsticks showcase the authentic smokey, spicy flavours native to the Florida Keys, and the casual yet elegant cuisine makes the perfect accompaniment to the stunning beachside setting.

This elegant eatery in Mina A’Salam has an enviable beachside setting, looking out towards the architectural icon, making it an ideal location for special occasions. The rustic tables sit on the hotel’s pristine private beach, so diners can gaze upon the waves of the Arabian Gulf as they work their way through the menu created by Greek chef Yiannis Katsikas. Shimmers is all about authentic food and flavours with a focus on fresh ingredients, from traditional lamb chops with roast potatoes and feta cheese to an authentic mousaka with minced beef and lamb, potatoes and spices, and the classic Greek salad. Fresh seafood is the order of the day at Sofitel The Palm, Dubai’s signature restaurant. With its picturesque setting surrounded by swaying palms and sparkling water, the elegant eatery feels like a tropical island paradise with a menu to match. The menu is heavily focused on Asian-inspired raw dishes, including salmon and tuna sashimi, as well as yellowfin tuna tartare and South Americaninspired ceviche. The mains also make the most of the bountiful seafood, from platters piled high with lobsters, oysters, king crab and more, to seasalted crusted seabass for two. Curries are a popular choice, and the chefs take their influence from all over the world, with hearty main dishes ranging from an Indian-style prawn curry to a seabass served in a spicy, Sri Lankan inspired coconut broth. The best place to savour the seafood feast is out on the terrace, where diners can soak up views of the French Polynesian-themed resort and, in the distance, a gorgeous private beach that makes the most of the Palm Jumeirah location.

TIME ON YOUR SIDE Concierge showcases standout timepieces from the world’s finest horological brands
—— A. LANGE & SÖHNE
The LANGE 1 is perhaps the most recognisable watch ever created by the Saxon manufactory thanks to its generous outsize date and elegant aesthetics. Aficionados can now fall in love with the latest edition of the LANGE 1 Moon Phase, which at first glance closely resembles the previous version, but is, in fact, substantially different. Sitting on the dial is a new moonphase indicator, accurate to one day every 122.6 years. The sky disc beneath the surface rotates on its own once every 24 hours, setting the moon against a bright blue background by day and framing it in dark blue with laser-cut stars at night. Don’t let its sleek looks fool you – this is one of the most complicated date-tracking watches, complete with a perpetual calendar and precision indications of the date, day of the week, month and phases of the moon. In fact, you’ll only need to correct the date before March 1 in the year 2100. Discover more at the Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons boutique in The Dubai Mall. Contact: 04 3398880
Roger Dubuis’ pre-SIHH wonder, Excalibur Quatuor Cobalt MicroMelt, has been turning heads and not just for its brilliant design that makes a dramatic statement with an openworked dial and red, white and blue hues. It’s believed to be the first watch to be made out of a high-performance alloy called cobalt chrome, which is produced using the exclusive MicroMelt technology that represents just 0.1 percent of worldwide metallurgy. DUBAI CREEK, SOUKS AND DUBAI MUSEUM The heart of the city, the Creek is a stunning spot to catch a glimpse of authentic Dubai. See dhows (traditional boats) ply their trade along the waters while early morning visitors will see fishermen at work on the river banks. Also in this part of the city is Dubai Museum, which makes for a fascinating day out with interactive displays and exhibits charting the emirate’s history from its pearl diving days. Stop by the gold, spice and perfume souks for some traditional treasures before leaving this vibrant area.

RANIA KUZBARI ASHUR ———
The founder of Art For All reveals her Dubai highlights
I moved to Dubai in 1998 with my husband and two young sons, after living in Beirut, Paris and London. Like everyone else, we planned to be here for two or three years, and here we are, 20 years later! Our daughter was also born here. It feels like home to us. The importance of literacy and the arts, and getting children to read more, has always been a passion of mine. I started Art For All as a hobby, to help children in the UAE experience theatre and to encourage literacy through live performances. We bring international shows here to expose local audiences to the excitement and drama of worldclass theatre productions. In the early days we did a maximum of three shows per school year, but the company has grown tremendously. Today, we have over 100 schools on our books. We collaborate with the schools to bring them shows that support their curriculum requirements. I’m involved with a wide variety of sports such as golf, tennis and yoga. I’m a big fan of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships that take place every February. I also love the art exhibitions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and the Sharjah Biennale. I try to attend most of the performances at Dubai Opera, and the annual Abu Dhabi Classics music festival. When we have visitors to stay, we love taking them on a desert safari. We usually go through Arabian

Adventures - the drivers are so skilled and everything is arranged for you. Try the Sunset Dune Dinner Safari for dune bashing, watching the sunset and a barbecue at a traditional Bedouin-style camp. Downtown Dubai is a must-see for visitors. Book an outdoor table in Em-Sherif at Souk Al Bahar and enjoy the best views of The Dubai Fountain show while you dine on delicious Middle Eastern cuisine. For a truly special dining experience, I would recommend La Petite Maison in DIFC, a stellar French restaurant with a lovely ambience. For a more low-key meal, I recommend Café Bateel. We are lucky to have some beautiful beaches in Dubai. I love Kite Beach for a quiet evening or morning stroll, although it also has a lovely vibe when it’s busy at the weekends. If you’d like to dine on the beach, I recommend The Beach Bar & Grill in the One&Only Royal Mirage for jaw-dropping views. Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is a hidden gem where you can stroll around traditional buildings and art galleries. I like The Majlis Gallery for fascinating exhibitions in a picturesque spot that really feels like Old Dubai. XVA Gallery is also here and has a nice little café too.
