We in the UAE capital believe our homeland is something of a welcome contradiction for travellers. It is a place where deep-rooted Arabian heritage is deftly woven into a rich destination tapestry complete with luxury accommodation and world-class leisure attractions. Abu Dhabi is blessed with a diverse landscape. We have 400 kilometres of pristine coastline, over 200 natural islands, vast tracts of serene desert, tranquil oasis towns and a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital city. I hope during your stay you are able to experience as much of this variety as possible. In many ways, this emirate is several destinations in one, from the rustic charm of Al Ain, the birthplace of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the breathtaking vastness of the Liwa Desert in Al Gharbia with its mountainous dunes, to the energising pace and brightness of our capital city. We all share a desire to make you feel as welcome as possible and hope you leave with a positive, lasting impression of our homeland, traditions and people. In the pages of this magazine, you will find an overview of the emirate’s widespread appeal and I’m sure you will find much to inspire and entertain you. I wish you a relaxing, enjoyable and memorable stay in Abu Dhabi.

JOURNEY TO ARABIA ——— Vacheron Constantin’s exquisite celestial timepieces truly shine under a desert sky

For millennia, man has been influenced by the movements of the sun and moon, turning to the skies for guidance. In the sweeping desert landscapes of the Middle East, this astronomical accord was a way of life for the Bedouin people whose very survival depended on accurately reading celestial signals. Today, these elements are deeply woven into the fabric of modern Arabia as the sun, stars, and moon in particular, occupy a prominent place in local culture. A deep astronomical connection is also at the heart of Vacheron Constantin’s heritage and its extraordinary moon phase timepieces. Paying tribute to the inextricable bond between astronomy and horology, the oldest manufacturer of fine watches brings the notion of measuring the movements of the sky right up to date with its stunning Patrimony, Traditionnelle and Overseas collections
The movements in Vacheron Constantin’s astronomical complications are the very definition of accurate. Adding some sparkle to precision features, the diamond encrusted Traditionnelle Moon Phase And Power Reserve Small Model is an elegant yet innovative lunar timepiece
The Bedu people would journey across vast stretches of desert using the position of the sun, moon and stars as a rudimentary road map. That sense of innovation and exploration is found in the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Moon Phase And Retrograde Date model. The sleek timepiece, in 18 carat white or pink gold, boasts an undeniably fresh aesthetic, but it’s the powerful moon phase movement within that adds a spectacular edge
Vacheron Constantin’s celestial timepieces perfectly complement Arabia’s centuries’ held tradition of tracking the skies. Nevermore is this in focus than during the holy month of Ramadan, when just like generations before them, a special committee gathers to monitor the phases of the moon and declare the beginning of this very special time of year
Hidden among the desert dunes are examples of Arabian-inspired architecture. Structures such as watch towers and traditional courtyards once acted as vital vantage points to keep a lookout over dwellings and to bring the desert sky a little closer. With a long history that spans centuries, Vacheron Constantin’s stellar craftsmanship and artistic vision is embodied in striking timepieces that also stand the test of time

Perfectly blending the past and present, Vacheron Constantin has gone the extra mile when it comes to a moon phase movement with outstanding form and function. The Overseas Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar is water resistant and has a choice of interchangeable straps, including rubber, ensuring it meets the demands of modern living while retaining a deep connection to its celestial inspirations and roots of exceptional craftsmanship

A MOMENT IN TIME ——— Concierge reveals the creative brilliance of German watchmaking greats, Glashütte Original
At Baselworld 2017, the world’s most prestigious watch and jewellery fair that’s held annually in Switzerland, Glashütte Original once again impressed with a presentation of new timepieces that reflect true artistic skill, technical creativity and, at the same time, tell the story of Saxon watchmaking. Nestled in the Müglitz valley of Eastern Germany is the serene town of Glashütte. Here, at the birthplace of German watchmaking, the population is made up predominantly of skilled artisans who create beautiful timepieces for the country’s greatest watch houses. While competition and brand rivalry outside the Saxon town may be fierce, manufacturers in the watchmaking hamlet sit side by side in peaceful alliance. In the workshops of Glashütte Original, generations of families work alongside each other. Experienced artisans and fresh-faced graduates from Glashütte Original’s school for aspiring watchmakers work in unison, drawing on their strengths to craft some of the finest quality timepieces available. The path for watchmakers and companies in Glashütte hasn’t been easy. The town has found itself in the middle of three wars and a number of political regimes; many of which threatened the survival of the watchmaking trade. After World War II, when a large area of nearby Dresden was destroyed, the watchmakers of Glashütte came together under one company umbrella, GUB (Glashütter
26
Uhrenbetriebe). When the Berlin Wall, separating East from West Germany fell in 1989, the company was temporarily closed. However, the pride and love for the unique art of German watchmaking endured and, in time, GUB restarted, minus a few brands that separated from the mother company, such as A. Lange & Söhne and Moritz Grossman. Glashütte Original set about rebuilding business and bringing back its craftspeople, rapidly growing the number of workers from 72 to over 500. With the launch in the spring of 2016 of its manufactory Calibre 36 – the heart of the new Senator Excellence line – the Senator Excellence Panorama Date and the Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase has been stealing the spotlight of late. Every watch in the collection goes through rigorous testing for 24 days – under conditions that are even tougher than those in force for the demanding German Chronometer certification test – while a special engraving on the case back serves as a seal of quality. It’s impressive to note that Glashütte Original produces nearly all its timepieces’ components; essentially everything except leather straps. Within the valley, the brand has two manufactories. It also runs a dial manufactory in Pforzheim in West Germany, which creates intricate dials; each one often going through up to 90 stages before reaching completion. The artistic skills and creativity are perhaps

most obvious in Glashütte Original’s Sixties Iconic collection of timepieces that were unveiled earlier this year. The new limitededition Sixties Square chronograph impresses with its domed dial and stunning colours that also give the models their names – forest, ocean, tangerine, fire and graphite. A technique known as dégradé is used for the dials for a mesmerising gradient effect – it involves the manual process of applying a series of lacquer coats after which the dials are heated to burn in the colours. Other standout timepieces produced at the manufactory include new models launched at this year’s Baselworld, such as the landmark Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar. One of the most desirable complications, the function assures the correct constellation of date, weekday and leap year up to the year 2100AD and complements the exceptional contemporary aesthetics. Every detail is taken care of and is worthy of admiration, from the curve of the moon phase at 8 o’clock to the weekday and month windows presented as in a passe-partout frame. Glashütte Original also unveiled a sporty new version of the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date in stainless steel. Here the deep black dial is set off by high-contrast white print and is enhanced by radiant blue Super-LumiNova, which highlights the white gold hour, minute and stop seconds hands. The refreshed Pavonina collection of ladies’ watches sees an impressive range of colours and dials with a wide variety of decorative

motifs and materials – in mother-of-pearl, shimmering galvanic surfaces, Arabic appliques or studded with diamonds. The new models stand out for their customisation options, with clients able to engrave motifs and inscriptions on the caseback. At Glashütte Original, it’s easy to see that watchmakers play an extremely important – if not the most important – role. It takes around 3,000 hours to first become a watchmaker and between 10 and 15 years to attain the skills needed to create a complicated piece such as a minute repeater. Training is ongoing and the brand is committed to finding new talent by offering free courses to promising applicants at its watchmaking school in Glashütte. The final results are testament to the many hours involved in crafting each timepiece, each bearing the Saxon manufacture’s emblem with pride. —— Discover the latest timepiece collections at Glashütte Original’s boutique at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island. THE FUTURE OF LUXURY ——— Concierge meets the man who inked a tattoo on Montblanc and finds out what’s next for the brand Words by Rob Nicholas
“The times they are a-changin,” said Bob Dylan, and the statement is no more apt in 2017 than when it is applied to luxury. Montblanc though has its finger on the pulse and has consistently tapped into evolving customer needs and trends to morph the brand’s reputation for writing instruments to also being a leading watch, jewellery and leather accessories brand, while also championing an important cause. The brand’s latest foray sees it introduce a connected watch and digital augmented paper as new entrants to its product line-up, while the long-standing UNICEF partnership is reflected through the use of the UNICEF blue and six special characters on a variety of special pieces. The characters are written in different languages and are the first letters children learn to write at school. At the helm of the maison’s creative department is Zaim Kamal. He is one of those people that can’t fail to make an impression and Kamal has been conceiving and refining product at Montblanc for the last four years. Rather than take such a revered brand too far out of the box, Kamal has successfully bled around the edges to create fresh appeal. He is the man who introduced tattoos on leather accessories and brought backpacks into a business oriented product line-up, creating a waiting list as well as a fresh approach. Concierge caught up with Kamal in New York when the UNICEF partnership for 2017/18 was announced and he provided some background and context to the collaboration.
36
“The UNICEF partnership is in its 13th year and this was the first collection I worked on with the design team since I’ve been at the maison. It is also the first time that the UNICEF partnership has been reflected in all of our product categories. It will be represented in store, in windows, through communications and across digital platforms. We have 470 stores and each of them will carry the UNICEF concept to give it a very wide voice around the world,” said Kamal. One of his most celebrated innovations has been to incorporate tattoos in signature leather pieces produced by Montblanc. The concept was introduced in 2015 and created a clamour of interest from brand aficionados as well as drawing in new fans intrigued by the approach. “We have to surprise, we have to disrupt and that’s what I love about the maison,” he explained. “I remember when I first went to the board of directors to propose this and they looked at me and asked, ‘Tattoo and Montblanc?’ They are seldom lost for words, but they had difficulty following that and I said ‘But guys, writing with ink on a surface – who but us?’ And I love the board for this and I love the maison, that they say, okay, go.” The first tattoos were introduced two years ago and when asked why the concept didn’t continue, Kamal explained, “The reality is you can’t mass-produce a hand tattoo. We had just one to two specialists that did everything rather than factories of tattoo artists.

“However, art continues to be a strong feature in our signature pieces. Have you seen the hand painted serpent bag? We took the original steamer bag and found a hand-painter in Florence that created something really unique,” he explained, referring to the 110th anniversary steamer bag introduced in 2016. We asked Kamal what product lines he sees as having the greatest potential for development in the future and his attention immediately turned to the watch division, which has been a modern-day success story for the brand. “The Summit smartwatch created an impulse, meaning that it is a natural progression and has brought about a new field in our product line-up. We now have a whole digital segment that lives partly in leather, partly in watches and partly in writing instruments. “The reason Montblanc has been successful for 110 years is that we have provided our target clients with the tools that they need. People travel a lot, they need to be connected and some have never worn a mechanical watch. We’d like to convince them by wearing it. Summit is made like a mechanical watch, sits in the mechanical case, it has a strap, it has the buckle and interaction is through the crown but it is fully connected through the touch screen. “At the same time, a client who has only worn a mechanical watch and won’t wear a connected watch because he finds it too flimsy or too small can have the familiar gesture on his wrist but with the full connection. We are familiarising someone coming
from the connected world, as well as someone coming from the mechanical world with the same platform, but driven by different desires,” said Kamal. Like any brand looking to the future, Montblanc is looking closely at changing trends and habits, explaining: “We are very focused on the younger generations and understanding what they will be looking for when they are in a position to buy. “When I first suggested introducing a backpack to our product line-up, many people’s first reaction was that this is not business, who will wear it? But when we did, there was immediately a waiting list. People have changed and we have to look towards campus chic. Go to a department store and count the number of sneakers and shoes. Count separates – and count suits. Go to campuses and see what people are wearing – sneakers, jeans, jacket and they carry a backpack. You have to adapt and be relevant.” With augmented paper, connected watches and an expanding line-up of innovative accessories, Montblanc continues to be a maison that moves at a speed that belies its 110-year age. —— Discover more about the latest Montblanc collections at the brand’s boutique at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island. NATIONAL TREASURE ——— Efforts are underway in Ras Al Khaimah to revive Arabia’s historic pearling trade
Long before the discovery of oil, pearls were an important source of wealth for the people of the United Arab Emirates. During the 18th and early 19th centuries pearl divers would sail for four months at a time, working from sunrise to sunset, scouring the depths of the Gulf waters for this natural treasure. It was dangerous work and diving equipment at the time was rudimentary, offering little protection from the elements. Pearl divers would take to the waters with just a nose clip, or fetam, fashioned from goat or gazelle horns, and hold their breath as they swam to the seabed in search of pearl oysters. Their only lifeline back to the boat was a rope which was used to haul divers to the surface. Pearling in the UAE died out in the early 1930s with the introduction of Japanese cultured pearls. Fortunately, the bravery of the divers lives on and the UAE’s rich pearling heritage is now undergoing something of a revival. Breathing fresh life into the industry, RAK Pearls Holding runs a dedicated pearl farm in Ras Al Khaimah which since its opening, has gone from strength to strength. “The project started in 2004 when my brother and I explored the feasibility of making pearls in the Arabian waters. The question was very simple – if this region was the most important for producing natural pearls, why not bring it back again using modern technology?” explains Mohamed Al Suwaidi from RAK Pearls Holding. Starting with local pinctada radiata oysters, found wild in the waters of Ras Al Khaimah and across the Gulf region, the farm’s expert team follow the Japanese method which sees a small mother of pearl bead implanted into the oyster, along with a tiny sliver of mantle tissue from another pearl. This then forms the nucleus around which the oyster naturally secretes layer after layer of nacre, the substance that forms the pearl. Comparisons to Japan, regarded as the cultured pearl capital of the world, are to be expected – but
42
Al Suwaidi reveals that there are inherent differences in quality and production. In Japan, oysters are no longer produced naturally and are instead prepared in labs, but remain quite weak in comparison. The nutrient-rich mangrove ecosystem in Ras Al Khaimah presents an ideal environment for producing cultured pearls where oysters produce layers of coating three times faster. Pearls produced here can also reach 12 millimetres in size, while in Japan the average size remains about 8 millimetres. In the past, hundreds of oysters were collected in the Gulf waters in the hope of finding a few natural pearls. Now, through exacting pearl culturing methods, the pearl farm in Ras Al Khaimah has an average success rate of 65 to 80 percent for the entire harvest of about 40,000 oysters. “The best quality pearls are used in jewellery, while others are kept for accessories and souvenirs. The rest can be crushed and used for medicine or cosmetics. Nothing goes to waste – the meat is used in restaurants and the shell itself can be polished to create mother of pearl,” says Al Suwaidi. In a painstaking process, implanted oysters are carefully nurtured for around six to eight months on average before they are opened. Free from artificial bleaching and colouring, pearls produced in Ras Al Khaimah are of varied sizes, shapes and colours but each reflect a lustrous shine. An expert team, that combines the talents of people from Japan, Europe and the Arab world, ensures that the right days are chosen to harvest.

“FOR US, PEARLS AREN’T PRODUCTS – THEY ARE OUR HISTORY. IN MY GR ANDFATHER’S TIME, PEARLS WERE PRECIOUS. IT WAS WHAT HE LIVED ON. UNFORTUNATELY TODAY, PEOPLE FORGET THIS”
“Oysters can grow for a year but if you choose the wrong day, you can end up with a dull shine or pearls with blemishes. We harvest in winter because summer heat makes the oyster produce more mother of pearl but cold water polishes it so that there’s high lustre. The secret lies in managing this process. At the end of the day, you are dealing with natural species so you have to be alert 24/7,” explains Al Suwaidi. These cultured Arabian pearls have already been used in exclusive jewellery pieces in collaboration with international brands, including British designer Stephen Webster and luxury watch and jewellery firm Mouawad. There’s been growing interest from around the world but Al Suwaidi insists that it’s about quality and not quantity. “We produce 40,000 pearls at the moment, which is very little when compared to other markets
like China that produce thousands of tonnes a year. Right now we want to raise awareness that there’s a new type of pearl in the market that has the same characteristics of the old Arabian pearl. Historically, our pearls were known for their lustre and colours and we want to retain that,” says Al Suwaidi. The hope is that Arabian pearls will once again be held in high regard around the world. “For us, pearls aren’t products – they are our history. In my grandfather’s time, pearls were precious. It was what he lived on. Unfortunately today, people forget this. “We are working on having a network of pearl farms in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman in the future. Our dream is to revive the industry back to its glory days and be one of the most important producers of pearls.”

AQUATIC ADVENTURES ——— Concierge meets the playful residents of Dubai Dolphinarium

45
Set amidst the lush greenery of Creek Park, Dubai Dolphinarium has quickly become one of the city’s most popular attractions since opening in 2008. The indoor venue regularly hosts popular aquatic shows that star bottlenose dolphins and trained seals performing a host of astounding tricks such as dancing, juggling and even painting for their trainers. This bond between humans and the incredible creatures has been built over time, and is one that’s incredibly strong. Aside from dolphin and seal shows, Dubai Dolphinarium hosts a number of other highlights including an exotic bird show with over 20 different species, the country’s first mirror maze and, more recently, Dolphin Planet where guests can swim with a dolphin. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most people,” explains Jose Huet, a trainer at Dolphin Planet, who joined the team in 2015. “For many people, to touch or swim with a dolphin is a dream and they are often overcome with emotion when it actually comes true at Dolphin Planet. A while back, a little girl who had terminal cancer travelled all the way from London to swim with dolphins here. Her family and friends were watching her swim, living her dream. We arranged everything because we knew how important it was to her and we were all so touched by the experience,” adds Huet. Behind the scenes at Dolphin Planet, there’s a lot to account for and Huet starts his day examining the dolphins and making sure they are in good health – not just physically but also emotionally.

“FOR M ANY PEOPLE, TO TOUCH OR SWIM WITH A DOLPHIN IS A DREAM AND THEY ARE OFTEN OVERCOME WITH EMOTION WHEN IT ACTUALLY COMES TRUE AT DOLPHIN PL ANET”
“People always wonder about my job and what being a dolphin trainer involves. It’s not like a normal job as dealing with animals makes each day completely different. Every morning we begin with routine examinations. We need to check everything from the dolphins’ eyes and mouths to their bodies, as well as breathing levels to see if they are okay. We sometimes collect samples for testing, if necessary. Whether it’s something big or small, we keep track of it all. “A huge part of being a trainer is staying on top of all these medical aspects and monitoring their wellbeing. That’s the priority. After that, it depends on what the dolphins will be doing. So say, for example, if they are going to be interacting with people, you have to observe how they move and if they are careful with their movements around people. For the shows, the dolphins perform tricks so the trainers have to make sure they exercise to stay fit. You give the dolphins what they want, whether it’s food or special attention, to reinforce a desired behaviour and then build on that relationship,” explains Huet. Huet is one of five trainers at Dubai Dolphinarium where there’s a real family atmosphere amongst the team. “I remember looking out of the plane and seeing Dubai for the very first time – it looked completely different from Mexico. Then on my first day at Dubai Dolphinarium, I was walking around and it was all so new but then, when I smelt the familiar scent of salt water, it was like I was coming home.” Huet makes training dolphins look incredibly easy, interacting with them at Dolphin Planet with natural ease. He grew up surrounded by animals and distinctly remembers the first experience that ignited his interest in marine life.

One of the UAE’s leading attractions, Dubai Dolphinarium hosts daily dolphin and seal shows as well as memorable swim with dolphin sessions at Dolphin Planet. “Keiko the orca from the movie FreeWilly used to be in Mexico at the Reino Aventura (now called Six Flags Mexico). When I was younger I really, really wanted to go there to see him. I don’t remember all the details but I can recall the emotions I felt while there. The experience sparked my curiosity because I wanted to know everything I could about him – what orcas liked and thought, and what they did,” explains Huet. While he went on to study photography at university, he took up a job at Vallarta & Cabo Adventures, photographing the animals and trainers. The role involved closely observing their interactions and, after a couple of years, he switched roles to become a trainer himself. “One of the hardest steps for a trainer is learning to communicate with an animal that doesn’t ‘speak’ in the conventional sense. Dolphins cannot hear like we do, so we communicate through observing their body language and using hand signals and body gestures. “Dolphins are not the only aquatic animal I’ve worked with. I have also spent time working with sea lions, sharks and others in the past. Sometimes people who start out as a trainer are able to understand that connection between humans and dolphins and sometimes they don’t, but once they can, it really does open a whole new door. For me it was a little bit easier because, when I was a photographer, I already spent time in and around the environment and observed it all. I was also very lucky to have great mentors in my life.” From witnessing dolphins give birth to watching calves grow and adjust in their environment, Huet has many career highlights to be proud of. His enthusiasm for his profession shows no signs of fading, especially as he holds dolphins in such high regard. “While dolphins are universally regarded as very intelligent creatures and are known to have friendly personalities, it’s magnificent to see just how close they can be to people and the bonds that they can form, and this is immediately apparent to every visitor at Dolphin Planet in Dubai Dolphinarium. To me, the personalities and behaviour of dolphins is simply amazing.”

JOIN THE CLUB ——— Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel presents an array of culinary delights in the capital
The Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel at Khor Al Maqta is a capital landmark in its own right and has long been a preferred venue for the community to stay, play and unwind since opening in the early 1990s. The hotel boasts an instantly recognisable exterior while the club features five-star recreational facilities including an Olympic swimming pool and football fields, but the culinary offerings also stand out for the sheer variety on offer, as well as the contemporary European flavours. At the helm is executive chef Karsten Gottschalk who trained in both London and Germany before carrying on his career in Abu Dhabi. “I was always very interested in cooking, especially after watching my mother prepare dishes at home. I remember when I was younger, I would often check what was cooking in the pots as my mother and grandmother prepared dinner and Sunday roasts. After my apprenticeship, great chefs in London further inspired my passion for cooking and, over the years I have trained myself to be more creative with food. To me, food is a way of expressing myself,” says Gottschalk. The years spent in Abu Dhabi have also influenced Gottschalk’s culinary style, and he now masterfully uses exotic spices from the region and beyond to experiment with different flavours, creating remarkable dishes. “I really enjoy cooking using plenty of spices and with Arabic cuisine there are lots of opportunities to do this. I like the flavours of traditional local dishes as both the preparation involved and taste is really unique. I always recommend visitors try the delicious ouzi served with local biryani rice. It is a whole lamb that is marinated and cooked on the open wood fire in an authentic way. At the hotel, we use long grain biryani rice that is complemented by Indian spices and dried lemon before being garnished with raisins and nuts.
52
“Our ouzi is served every day in different styles at Al Bathna. This international, all-day buffet restaurant offers a wide range of cuisines including continental, Emirati, Arabic, Indian, Asian, American, Japanese and more. In fact there’s more than 150 different dishes presented at our buffets, while our seafood nights every Sunday evening and the Friday family brunch here are also very popular with guests.” In the evenings, a visit to Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel isn’t complete without enjoying a memorable dinner at Kennedy Restaurant. With its light and airy décor, pristine garden views and an intimate al fresco terrace, this elegant restaurant is a culinary gem. The menu features the best in European fare with local touches evident thanks to Gottschalk’s expert touch. The restaurant’s signature dishes include contemporary favourites such as pan-seared foie gras, Guinea fowl breast, braised lamb shank with rosemary jus and grilled beef tenderloin on broccoli hash. The attention to detail is evident in every dish and the restaurant also presents degustation menus for those who would like to enjoy the chef’s recommendations. “Kennedy Restaurant has a Swiss, German and French twist. With a relaxing ambience, high standard of service and carefully selected beverages, Kennedy really is a one of a kind restaurant in Abu Dhabi,” says Gottschalk. From the sumptuous grills and Emirati specialities at Al Bathna to the laidback Tex-Mex cuisine at Taverna Restaurant, light bites at Leisure Lounge and contemporary fare at Kennedy Restaurant, the hotel presents an array of delectable choices that are well worth savouring while in the capital. —— For more information or to book a table at any of the restaurants in Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel, contact: 02 4975169

ABU DHABI FISHING HARBOUR
An offbeat cultural attraction, this quaint harbour by the Mina Zayed port is a hive of activity. We recommend heading there early in the morning to see the traditional abra boats set sail or later in the evening as catches are offloaded. The Forge holds all things meaty at the heart of its culinary philosophy. Promoting an impressively global feel, menu highlights of French Charolais beef, Spanish Iberico beef, Canadian veal, Australian Wagyu Tomahawk and Welsh lamb, are served alongside a choice of plump lobster tail, foie gras or bone marrow. For a twist on an old favourite, the chef also recommends the ‘Wow’ Wagyu beef burger decadently dressed with pan-fried duck liver and truffle sauce. Located within The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, the venue itself radiates a refined sense of style with plush interiors and warm lighting. For special occasions, why not elevate your experience and book into one of The Forge’s three private dining rooms. Contact: 02 8188282
Hailing from the sunny shores of Los Angeles, BOA Steakhouse proudly keeps much of its focus on American-inspired dishes and fabulous prime mid-western cuts. Think succulent rib-eyes and 35-day dry aged New York Strip. The restaurant’s turf section is peppered with premium grills, including the Blackmore Wagyu with a marble score of 9+ and Master Kobe beef, as well as an impressive Porterhouse weighing in at a hefty 670 grammes. All cuts are offered with either a rub, such as tri-peppercorn, or you can pair your steak with homemade sauces including BOA’s signature J1. With so much to tempt the taste buds it’s understandable that you may struggle to whittle down your choice so opt for the Friday brunch packed with some of the best-loved dishes. Contact: 02 6411500
As the youngest chef to ever be awarded three Michelin stars, the Marco Pierre White name is synonymous with a certain standard of fine dining. And in a city that’s become a haven for celebrity chefs, this seasoned venue still stands out amongst the crowd. Nestled within the luxurious Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, diners are sure to find themselves enticed by the menu’s many delicacies, starting with appetisers of seared foie gras, soft shell crab and fresh Kelly oysters. Of course, if it’s the meaty mains you’re after, take your pick from the likes of 9+ marble Master Kobe beef, Wagyu Chateaubriand and the sizable one kilogramme cowboy steak for two. Nestled within Venetian Village, at The RitzCarlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, Inakaya offers authentic Japanese robata-yaki style cooking – robata meaning ‘around a sunken hearth’ and yaki meaning ‘grilling’. ASK THE CONCIERGE
Sridharan Murugesan, chief concierge at Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara, offers his top tips for exploring the capital

Abu Dhabi boasts a rich cultural heritage and is well known for its traditional Arabian hospitality. Apart from beautiful natural landscapes, such as its mangroves and many idyllic islands, the city proudly features some of the world’s most inspiring architecture including Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Sheikh Zayed Bridge and the soon to open Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island. Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) has also been focusing on attracting visitors from all over the globe with world-class events – such as the recent Yasalam Concerts on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi Art, Taste of Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Classics which will run until May 2017. Outwith the busy events calendar, there’s plenty for visitors to enjoy with a great mix of both indoor and outdoor activities across the city. The Mangrove National Park is undoubtedy a capital gem that should be on every visitor’s to-do list. You can explore this unique marine eco-system with guided kayak tours or on a stand-up paddle boarding trip through the calm waters. A choice of tours leave from the

promenade right in front of Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara. Some of my ot her top recommendations include a visit to Heritage Village at the Corniche Breakwater, which is a wonderful place to learn more about Emirati traditions and the Bedouin lifestyle. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, located about a 20-minute drive from the city, is also a great opportunity for guests to discover more about the importance of falcons in Arabian culture. Other essential tourist locations include Ferrari World Abu Dhabi on Yas Island. The first ever Ferrari-themed park in the world, its highlights include record-breaking roller coasters such as Formula Rossa and Flying Aces. For the best views of the city, head to Observation Deck at 300, located on the 74th floor of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. Here you can admire the amazing city views from this fantastic vantage point 300 metres above the city. When it comes to socialising and dining out, Abu Dhabi certainly isn’t short on highend options. Ray’s Bar at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers looks out onto the city and is great for enjoying cocktails while admiring the gorgeous panoramas below. Stop by Impressions, the rooftop lounge at Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara, which serves great sundowners coupled with unbeatable views of the nearby mangroves. If you’re searching for something really special, I highly recommend booking the unique Dining by Design experience at the rooftop terrace of Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara’s Royal Mangroves Suite. This exclusive evening offers couples the opportunity to celebrate a special occasion with impeccable service and gourmet food set against an impressive backdrop. 3
