Welcome

With less than 550 days until we welcome the world to the UAE, I invite you to discover some of the highlights of what you can expect at Expo 2020 Dubai.  A six-month celebration of culture, innovation and collaboration, this will be the biggest event the region has ever experienced. We expect to record 25 million visits between 20 October 2020 and 10 April 2021, with 70 per cent of visitors to come from outside the UAE – the largest proportion of international visitors in the 168-year history of World Expos. We have already confirmed more than 200 participants, including 190 nations – more than we promised during the bid phase. Each participating nation will have their own pavilion for the first time at a World Expo. The Country Pavilions will feature around the Thematic Pavilions, based on our three key subthemes, Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability. Visitors will also enjoy more than 60 events a day, from live performances and cultural celebrations to children’s activities, music, dance and so much more. Expo 2020 will also be a food and beverage destination in its own right, with more than 200 outlets with 50-plus cuisines from around the world. The UAE is proud to host the first World Expo in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region.

Our theme, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, emphasises the importance of collaboration. When we work together we can create a better future. Expo 2020 will bring the world together to solve common challenges and create new opportunities for individuals, communities, nations and businesses, helping them to achieve their needs today and inspiring them to pursue their future aspirations (Opportunity). We will showcase the history and progress made in the movement of people, goods and ideas (Mobility). We also invite you to join us in striving to protect and preserve our environment for future generations by doing more with less (Sustainability). We look forward to welcoming you and hope you will contribute to a World Expo unlike any other – a place where you will gain new perspectives, share knowledge and be entertained like nowhere else. I hope what you learn about Expo 2020 Dubai in our daily ATM coverage and by visiting our stand at ME2520 will inspire you to join the journey to 2020. Let’s welcome the future together #hayyakum.

An unmissable experience at Expo 2020 Dubai Millions from across the globe will enjoy a 173-day, once-in-a-lifetime celebration here in the UAE next year. Intrigued? Read on…

Imagine a day spent discovering futureshaping technologies, eating street food and haute cuisine, travelling through 190 nations and watching a world-famous pop sensation in concert – and all in one place. These are just a handful of experiences that await millions of visitors to Expo 2020 Dubai, which will be a once-in-a-lifetime celebration for everyone – whether you’re a tourist or an ambassador, a toddler or a great-grandparent. The next World Expo also envisions a brighter tomorrow for all – showing that when we collaborate and innovate together, we can achieve anything. The largest event ever held in the Arab world, Expo 2020 will take place from 20 October 2020 to 10 April 2021 at a 4.38 sq. km site in Dubai South. Each of the 173 days will be brimming with new experiences – from 60 daily live performances and more than 200 restaurants serving global cuisines to vibrant parades and pyrotechnic displays. Ever since The Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, World Expos have been a platform for innovation and an opportunity for cities to attract millions of visitors from across the globe. And expectations were immediately sparked when it was announced in 2013 that Dubai had won the right to host the first ever World Expo in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region – especially given the emirate’s reputation for the extraordinary. To date, 190 countries have confirmed their participation at Expo 2020. Twentyfive million visits are expected, with 70 per cent of visitors projected to come from outside the UAE – the highest proportion of international visitors in the 168-year history of World Expos. Expo 2020 also aims to inspire visitors to become change-makers and help build a better world for generations to come – guided by the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ and the subthemes of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability, each of which will have its own Thematic Pavilion.

6

Opportunity looks at ways to unlock human potential, Mobility is about the innovative movement of people, goods, information and ideas as a driver of progress, and Sustainability highlights the importance of living in balance with nature. Visitors at Expo 2020 will find groundbreaking architecture at every single turn, including a massive 360-degree projection surface on Al Wasl Plaza’s steel trellis dome and the unique design of the UAE Pavilion, which represents a falcon’s wings while in flight. The Expo will also feature special celebrations from Diwali to Chinese New Year, mindfulness sessions, extreme sports and everything in between. Digital theatre productions, poetry slams, fashion shows and thoughtprovoking discussions are just a handful of other ways that Expo 2020 will make visitors ponder their next visit before they have finished their first. The 5G-enabled site will also highlight cutting-edge technologies, such as wearable robotic suits at the USA Pavilion and a journey into space at the Mobility

Pavilion, which will explore the UAE’s plans to colonise Mars. This is very much in the tradition of World Expos, which have launched numerous innovations including the telephone, the ice cream cone, the X-ray machine and the Eiffel Tower. And the first dollop of tomato ketchup was dished out at an Expo, too. Expo 2020 will be a unique opportunity to see tomorrow today, while making friends from every corner of the world and contributing to a better future. An incredible journey awaits – don’t be the one who misses out.

60 LIVE EVENTS WILL TAKE PLACE PER DAY FOR 173 CONSECUTIVE DAYS

Taste your way around the world Delicious experiences await millions of visitors to Expo 2020 Dubai, an F&B destination in its own right

Expo 2020 will be a foodie’s delight, with more than 200 restaurants serving a world of cuisines, cutting-edge technologies enabling new culinary experiences and everything from simple to gourmet cuisine on the menu. In other words, the next World Expo will be a food and beverage (F&B) destination in its own right catering to the diverse tastes of millions of visitors for six months from 20 October, 2020. “We want Expo 2020 to be a place where visitors try new things,” explains Darren Tse, Commercial Director –at Expo 2020 Dubai. “So, while there will be cuisines that are close to the hearts of visitors, we hope they also try new styles of food. It’s a great place for people to experience an array of culturally-authentic cuisines all in one place. “We will also offer culinary tours across Expo, so visitors with a passion for a particular cuisine can explore Country Pavilions and restaurants to discover new layers of their favourite tastes. We expect food will draw back visitors to Expo time and time again.” A fair pricing structure also means visitors will have an array of options suitable to feed a family or enjoy a highend tasting menu. Emirati hospitality will also be on show, along with the nation’s diverse culinary offering, from beloved local restaurants to inventive up-and-comers.

“We want to accommodate all visitors, whether they’re families requiring affordable food or those seeking highend cuisine and the Michelin-star-type experience,” says Tse. “We will have different options so people can come back again and again to experience something new.” Organising a global event on the scale of Expo 2020 – the largest event ever to be held in the Arab world – requires meticulous planning, from construction and technology to transport and the visitor experience. And the task facing the F&B team at Expo 2020 is nothing short of monumental, with 50 million meals expected to be served across the six months and Expo’s subtheme of Sustainability top of mind throughout the programme. “Sustainability is at the heart of what we are trying to build at Expo and probably one of the biggest challenges we face,” says Tse. “We made a commitment publicly that 85 per cent of our waste will be diverted from landfill, which, if you look at any previous global event, is a leap. Food and beverage drives about 80 per cent of the waste on the site, so we are focused on reaching that target. “The first step we took was to draft the Food Ethos, a document that we shared with all our tendering parties. This highlighted sourcing standards, affordable and accessible food, as well as food waste,

diversion from landfill and recycling targets. It requires them to have compostable takeaway containers rather than plastic, for example. So that document is part of every single contract and the bid process. That’s where it all began.” Expo 2020 will also be a platform for companies to demonstrate new ideas and technologies, whether this is a sustainable product or a groundbreaking innovation. “Technology is increasingly influencing the F&B scene; you’re even seeing robotic restaurants launched,” says Tse. “So, we need to be involved in this and we absolutely will be. We will be looking at robotics, augmented reality and virtual reality, and whatever else is cutting-edge in 2020. “That is the exciting part. We are going to see what the best and the brightest put on their plates at Expo 2020.”

Tour the world in one destination At Expo 2020 Dubai you can explore 190 Country Pavilions, enjoy live entertainment, savour new cuisines, immerse yourself in cultural experiences and see the future

OMAN PAVILION THEME: Oman – Opportunities over Time ARCHITECT: Adi Architecture DISTRICT: Mobility Designed to resemble the tree from which frankincense is harvested, the Oman Pavilion will tell a story based on this precious resin. Reflecting the country’s rich past, five zones within the pavilion will explore how frankincense has played an important role in Omani life for more than 5,000 years, from its significance in international trade to its use in medicine, food and cosmetics. This journey will feature large-scale and high-impact moments, as well as interactive experiences created using Oman-developed augmented and mixed reality technology.

THAILAND PAVILION THEME: Mobility for the Future ARCHITECT: Index Creative Village DISTRICT: Mobility Inspired by the flower garland – a symbol of hospitality, luck and respect used in Thai culture to welcome houseguests – the Thailand Pavilion’s design and exhibitions will showcase the country as a regional hub for technology and digital innovation. The structure’s exterior is covered by a curtain of 500-plus woven artificial flowers, and visitors will be able to share their own flower engravings within the pavilion’s garden. The experience will highlight the nation’s advances in logistics, digital connectivity, transportation and personal mobility. 8

SPAIN PAVILION THEME: People and Places ARCHITECT: Amann-Canovas-Maruri DISTRICT: Sustainability Unwind, grab a bite or go shopping in a series of small urban squares at the Spain Pavilion, where the public spaces and exhibition area will be connected so that waiting becomes part of the entertainment. The pavilion’s exhibits will look at Spain’s fascinating history, from almost 800 years of Islamic rule to its initial connections with Latin America, as well as highlighting the nation’s modern-day innovations such as its leading organ transplant system. Featuring conical shapes that allow increased airflow to keep visitors cool, the building will be constructed with sustainable materials that include wood, iron and fabric, all of which can be reused post-Expo 2020.

Would you like to wander between Brazil and New Zealand, or Japan and Belgium, in a matter of minutes? Visitors to Expo 2020 Dubai will be able to do just this, as each of the 190 participating nations will have its own pavilion for the first time at a World Expo. Each Country Pavilion will feature a wealth of immersive experiences to explore, enabling visitors to discover more about the nation, its people, culture and innovations, as well as its achievements and aspirations. For the first time, Country Pavilions will be located according to their chosen Expo 2020 subtheme – Opportunity, Mobility or Sustainability – rather than based on world geography. This will enable greater collaboration between people and nations with similar challenges and interests. Here we take a closer look at six of the Country Pavilions to learn more about their unique designs and share a taste of what visitors can expect to experience.

MONACO PAVILION THEME: Monaco 360° - a World of Opportunities ARCHITECT: AODA DISTRICT: Opportunity Feel the ambiance of Monaco’s maze-like streets as you stroll through the nation’s multi-level pavilion, where the lighting recalls the warm colours of the French Riviera. You’ll find two main exhibitions in the polygonal pavilion, whose design is inspired by the Rock of Monaco. The ‘Garden of Opportunities’ will recreate a vivid fantasy garden in an interactive exhibit, while the ‘Kaleidoscope’ will showcase the country’s art, culture, innovation, history, gastronomy and more. Constructed using recyclable materials, the photovoltaic panels on the outside of the building will produce energy during the day and continue to power the pavilion into the evening.

NORWAY PAVILION THEME: Norway as a World-Leading Ocean Nation ARCHITECT: Rintala Eggertsson Architects, Expomobilia and FiveCurrents DISTRICT: Opportunity Venture out to the deep blue sea at the Norway Pavilion, and discover the country’s maritime heritage and its efforts to preserve the world’s oceans. Start below the sea bed and make your way up, level by level, to the ocean’s surface – on a journey that covers environmental and climate aspects, research and innovation, and sustainability solutions provided by Norwegian tech companies. There will also be thematic days and weeks highlighting issues related to global ocean sustainability at the pavilion, which seeks to provide a “playground for the adventurous” that blends fiction and reality.

AZERBAIJAN PAVILION THEME: Seeds for the Future ARCHITECT: Simmetrico DISTRICT: Sustainability You’ll recognise the Azerbaijan Pavilion from its leaf-shaped roof, as the nation shares its sustainability message with visitors to restore balance to our natural world by investing in the future now. Five areas will contain interactive and multimedia content that links to Expo 2020’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, and there will also be 1,300 sqm of gardens and walkways – featuring seven pomegranate trees representing prosperity and 15 olive trees symbolising peace, justice and wisdom. The pavilion’s focus on the environment is reflected in its ‘mean, lean, green’ design, minimising carbon emission through measures including rainwater harvesting and natural ventilation.

Open for business At the heart of Expo 2020 Dubai, the 45,000 sqm Dubai Exhibition Centre is preparing to set a new benchmark for meetings and events in the region

Welcoming innovators, entrepreneurs, government entities, start-ups and corporations from across the globe, in addition to 190 countries and millions of visitors, Expo 2020 Dubai will be the world’s largest meeting of minds. And sitting right at the doorstep of the largest event ever staged in the Arab world will be the state-of-the-art Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC). Comprising 45,000 sqm spread across two campuses, the DEC will be home to a theatre, auditorium, several multi-purpose halls, four suites and 24 meeting rooms.

12

All of these spaces will be customisable, enabling them to cater to everything from conferences and exhibitions to product launches and intimate meetings. The venue will even be capable of hosting indoor concerts for thousands of people. Set to be a major draw throughout the six months of Expo 2020, the DEC will continue to attract visitors to Dubai in the long-term as part of the Expo’s legacy. Ahmed Al Khatib, Chief Development and Delivery Officer, Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “By any standard, the Dubai Exhibition

Centre will be a cutting-edge venue that will play a pivotal role during Expo 2020. “But the impact of such a unique space will stretch well beyond the six months of Expo 2020, boosting the region’s meetings and events industry, furthering the UAE’s reputation as a destination for major conferences and fuelling growth in Dubai’s knowledge-based economy for many years to come.” The DEC will boast a location that is easily accessible via the dedicated Dubai Metro Route 2020 line and four major highways.

45,000 SQUARE METRES OF PROGRAMMABLE SPACE WILL CATER TO ALL NEEDS AND CAPACITIES It will also be close to Al Maktoum International Airport and a short distance from Dubai International Airport, Abu Dhabi International Airport as well as the Dubai and Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminals, making it easy to reach by land, air and sea. “There will be no place on the planet offering more exceptional business networking opportunities than Expo 2020 Dubai and the DEC will be right at its heart,” said Shaun Vorster, Vice President Strategy and Business Integration, Programming at Expo 2020 Dubai. “It will be unique from other conference centres in that, during the six months of Expo 2020, delegates will have access to what is happening throughout the site. That is something nowhere else in the world can offer, so we’re combining cutting-edge design and the very latest technology with the added value of Expo’s huge offering.” A global event hub where delegates can connect and network with Expo’s 200-plus participants, the DEC complex will feature on-site catering facilities and the very best-in-class audio, visual and telecommunication technology. There will also be VIP meeting rooms for those seeking privacy and luxury. “Expo 2020, and the DEC in particular, will serve as a platform for the MICE industry and the corporate sector because, during this six-month period, the largest global gathering of thought leaders and business leaders will walk through our doors. People want to plug into networking opportunities such as these,” said Vorster. “We are also targeting events that complement Expo 2020’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ and subthemes of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability, and we’ve seen immense interest from government agencies and national organisations

“WHILE THERE WILL BE SPECIAL EXPO-EDITION EVENTS, THERE WILL ALSO BE HUNDREDS OF OTHER SUMMITS, AWARD CEREMONIES, GALA EVENTS AND ASSOCIATION MEETINGS” to host events such as trading investment forums and business summits at the venue.” While the exhibition centre will be a hub for the corporate and business world, the facility will also be used by the wider community as a unique location to host social events such as concerts, award ceremonies and inspirational talks. “With 190 participating countries, we’ll see events planned around arts and culture, talks and gastronomy. In fact, the unique theatre and auditorium concept within the DEC lends itself to the performing arts, and participating countries can use this as a platform

during their national day celebrations for orchestras and operas,” said Vorster. “While there will be special Expoedition events, there will also be hundreds of other summits, trainings, award ceremonies, gala events and association meetings for knowledge and scientific exchange. But we’ve also received a good number of enquiries for social events and weddings, and will also welcome entertainment programmes such as ticketed concerts.” To book your event at the Dubai Exhibition Centre, or to learn more about Expo 2020’s MICE offerings, email MICE@expo2020.ae
