—— For the luxury traveller who values style and longevity in equal measure, Montblanc’s new vintage-inspired leather goods, accessories and timepieces make the ultimate travel companions. Comprising 20 bags, wallets and leather accessories, the 1926 Heritage Collection is highly desirable. Taking its inspiration from iconic designs, adventurous travel and traditional craftsmanship, the number 1926 is a nod to the year that the maison took its first foray into the world of luxury leather goods. The unique collection is available in a rich shade of brown, created using a timehonoured Tuscan technique to treat the vegetable tanned leather, with a bright red lining inspired by the traditional colours of Kenya’s Maasai tribe. Other vintage touches include the bridge and clasp closing systems to the Montblanc Heritage logo, the antique gold finishing on the metal fittings, and the artfully worn exteriors, all of which combine to make the collection as durable as it is fashionable, and a must-have for the urban nomad. Another set of vintage-inspired accessories from the luxury maison, Montblanc’s bronze 1858 Automatic Dual Time and 1858 Automatic recall the

famous Minerva military chronographs of the 1930s. With meticulous attention to detail, each timepiece includes the original 1930s Montblanc logo, featuring its historic font and central emblem of the Mont Blanc Mountain. Further historic design codes include vintageshaped crowns, classic minute railway tracks encircling the dials, large cathedral hands and luminescent Arabic numerals, with the cloisonné designs filled with beige Super-LumiNova® for impeccable visibility. To complete the look, artisans at the Montblanc Pelletteria in Florence have artfully aged the cognac-coloured calfskin and alligator straps, creating a timeless, vintage-inspired appeal.

back in time ——— With a focus on innovation, Officine Panerai is paying a fitting tribute to its centuries-old heritage

Representing the finest in Italian craftsmanship and Swiss precision, the story of Officine Panerai is often celebrated as a unique chapter in haute horology. Renowned for introducing the world’s first glowing dive watches, originally produced for the Royal Italian Navy in the early 19th century, today each Panerai timepiece recalls its strong maritime heritage. “Our history has its beginnings in Florence where Giovanni Panerai, a businessperson, craftsman and innovator, opened the city’s first watchmaker’s shop in 1860. Our history links every single detail of a watch to the purpose for which it was designed and made, for example, when Panerai watches were supplied to the commandos of the Italian Navy. It is a history that has always looked to the future, through the ongoing search for technical excellence that distinguishes every new collection,” explains Milvin George, Managing Director - Middle East and India for Officine Panerai. The early years of Panerai shaped its momentous journey. In 1936, the instruments developed for the Royal Italian Navy took on an even more strategic role to be used for the prototype of the Radiomir watch. Created for the underwater exploits of the commandos of the First Submarine Group, many of its features still distinguish it today: a large steel cushion-shaped case (47mm), luminous numerals and markers delivering an unprecedented level of visibility underwater, wire

loop strap attachments welded to the case, a hand-wound mechanical movement, and a wide water-resistant strap, long enough to be fastened over the diving suit. In 1938, the prototype of the Radiomir went into production, charting a confident course for Panerai. The design of the Radiomir gradually transformed to better meet the Navy’s requirements, which then led to the brand’s Radiomir 1940 collection. Existing designs of the Radiomir 1940 cases continue to be inspired by historic examples created for the Italian Navy. Officine Panerai – part of the Richemont Group since 1997 – re-interprets its passion year by year. For more than 150 years, the luxury watchmaker’s focus has been the creation of high precision instruments for measuring time, with a strong, distinctive aesthetic and functional identity. “Panerai’s novelties are notable for their timeless design; whether in Radiomir or Luminor cases, they present a series of technological innovations that are evidence of the ability of the Florentine brand to draw inspiration from its own past as it writes the future of high quality watchmaking,” George explains. Every Panerai watch from the brand’s collections, which include Radiomir, Radiomir 1940, Luminor, Luminor 1950 and Luminor Due, is borne of centuries of unique heritage and careful attention to detail, as George reaffirms: “The essence of the brand and one

“Sm art watches are very trendy and handy but they serve an entirely different clientele. Hence, in ter ms of technology and trends, we are constantly solidifying our watch collection”

of our main ingredients to success is keeping our identity intact by combining Italian design with Swiss watchmaking perfection, along with our passion for the sea. “Each Panerai watch is as unique as the history it tells. I am proud to say that today our watches are produced at the company’s manufacturing facility in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. We produce, design and develop the movements and cases for our watches in-house. All our products revolve around the brand’s core principles, proving that Panerai is a high-end sport watch brand expressing authenticity, creativity and passion. “Moreover, all our watches are produced in a limited number and we have more demand than supply, which keeps our watches special. Each one comes with its own letter to say the year of production that it was made, meaning our collectors know the year and quantity, which keeps the value of the watch.” This year, there’s been plenty of buzz around the use of new material innovations such as Lab-ID and BMG-TECH in new models. The Luminor Submersible 1950 BMG-TECH 3 Days Automatic 47mm, water-resistant to 300 metres, is the first mechanical watch with a case made of metallic glass (Bulk Metallic Glass), which delivers extra strength and durability. Another new jewel in Panerai’s crown is the Lab-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3 Days - 49mm. A technical marvel, the watch features no oils or liquid lubricants of any kind in

its movement, and boasts a 50-year guarantee. The special edition also stands out for its deep black dial and contemporary finish. Leading the way with masterful innovations, and complemented by the strength of an enviable heritage, Panerai remains resolute about the future of the industry. As George explains: “We keep an open eye on trends; however, we do not follow them as we do not want to lose our strong brand identity. Despite the technological revolution and the rise in popularity of smartwatches, we predict and believe that traditional analogues will still maintain their relevance through their craftsmanship and art of watchmaking, which sets them apart. “Smartwatches are very trendy and handy but they serve an entirely different clientele. Hence, in terms of technology and trends, we are constantly solidifying our watch collection, introducing new movements and putting forth our ‘Laboratorio Di Idee’ expertise, while maintaining the exclusivity of the brand.” —— Discover the latest Officine Panerai collections at the brand’s boutique in The Galleria at Al Maryah Island. Saadiyat Island is very much a reflection of the evolution taking place across the emirate as a diverse mix of attractions presents a compelling tourism offering. From world-class retail to leisure and gourmet dining options, it’s all available on this paradise isle. Adding even more to the options here, Saadiyat Cultural District promises to deliver a serious artistic edge. All eyes are on the district’s development with cultural heavyweights Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi just around the corner. The world-famous museums, slated to open from this year onwards, are set to be home to impressive collections and are themselves stunning architectural feats. Homegrown cultural hub Zayed National Museum is another spectacular venue due to open in the district with exhibits telling the story of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his historic unification of the emirates. In the meantime, those looking for an enriching cultural experience can head to Manarat Al Saadiyat creative hub which regularly hosts exhibitions, workshops and performances. Make the most of island life at the exclusive Saadiyat Beach Club, which overlooks the Arabian Gulf. Saadiyat Beach Golf Club – designed by pro golfer Gary Player – is close by and also taps into the location’s natural beauty with one of the world’s most picturesque golf courses. Fringed on one side by the region’s crystal waters, the course is also edged by luxury property The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi. Whether you’re indulging in a refreshing treatment at the property’s palatial spa or dining at one of its gourmet restaurants, a visit is sure to be unforgettable. There’s an inextricable link between Islam and writing. This connection stems from the fact that calligraphy was the primary means of preserving the Qur’an. Found within mosques, books, tombs, architecture and paintings, Arabic calligraphy has left a visual stamp in every conceivable corner of the Islamic world.

“it is like a for m of meditation and inner explor ation. It is also a l anguage that represents m any concepts in an abstr act and verbal way”

Masterfully inscribed on coins, paintings, mosque interiors and ancient architecture, Arabic calligraphy is a treasured creative form that bridges the gap between religion and the art of writing. Requiring decades of practice to truly master, there’s a unique sense of serenity attributed to this traditional art as calligraphers thoughtfully contemplate each inky stroke. “For me it is like a form of meditation and inner exploration. It is also a language that represents many concepts in an abstract and verbal way,” explains artist Majid Alyousef. It was an early passion that spurred on his fascination with calligraphy. “I started drawing and painting when I was eight years old, although over the years it was my interest in calligraphy that really flourished. I went on to gain a BA degree in Fine Arts and an MA degree in Interactive Design and during my career I’ve worked with several internationally recognised branding and advertising agencies.” Now working out of his studio in Dubai, Alyousef says a typical day begins with an assessment of on-going projects and requests. “Usually it starts with a quick review of the work currently under construction, be it paintings or sketches. It’s good to take notes with a fresh eye early in the day. Then I do some warm up lettering and calligraphy exercises before moving on to the tasks for that day. Although a traditionalist in some respects, in many others Alyousef is keen to keep his style innovative. “For the classical artworks, though I use contemporary tools, I usually follow the

CONC_AUH_SEPT17_EXPERIENCE_PHOTOESSAY_Calligraphy_v1_TS_SS.indd 33

traditions of the old masters, keeping the techniques similar. Then for modern styles I do more intuitive and improvised sketches in the first stages – although the final art piece is far from improvised and would be more of a studied result.” From calligraphy paintings to typography consultancy and type-face design, the Saudi artist offers a variety of interesting services. Among them includes the ‘Arabisation’ of existing foreign brands. Alyousef explains that designing an Arabic logotype in this way involves “a visual analysis of the typographic style used in the original brand mark, followed by a design in Arabic that visually matches the logo”. While he enjoys experimenting with contemporary styles, for those who are just starting to explore the art he suggests starting with more classical types. “Most calligraphers, especially beginners, like modern styles that look good but are not extremely difficult to master.Young artists tend to learn these styles to make pieces in a short time with a lot of creative flexibility. Classical calligraphy is difficult, but to be really good in any modern style, you have to start with the classics to understand the basic rules of aesthetics and then develop your own style.” He also stresses that it’s important to keep evolving as an artist. “I think the artist should also be an intellectual person, so besides continuously practicing, reading and learning the theory and philosophy of art is important. There is always something new to learn and discover, and that should be the attitude of an artist.”

The word ‘calligraphy’ originates from the Greek meaning ‘beautiful writing’. Centuries of expertise have been handed down through generations to preserve the ancient art of calligraphy.

“Geometry is a very critical part of composition and the at tr activeness of geometrical shapes is directly rel ated to the way the br ain perceives them” Approaching the science behind the art, Alyousef explains that, for him, essentially it comes down to three key elements – geometry, a sense of vision and neuro-aesthetics. “Geometry is a very critical part of composition and the attractiveness of geometrical shapes is directly related to the way the brain perceives them. The visual process in the brain comes from two main components; the first one defines lines and contours and the other is concerned with colour and tonality. Neuro-aesthetics, on the other hand, is the study of aesthetics from a scientific perspective. I use some of these principles in order to create compositions using paints. When looking at a painting our eyes only take in small segments of the painting and then the brain stitches them together to form the whole experience. In reality we can’t recognise more than five centimetres of any object we look at any given moment. But, as the eye scans the canvas area capturing its many segments, it allows us to put the image together and understand the subject in that particular painting. In my artwork I try to shuffle the stages of that process and rearrange multiple segments in more intricate forms. I also play with the spacing and positioning of objects – the result is very interesting.” Traditionally, Islamic calligraphy is drawn using a carved reed pen and there are several styles within the genre, each with distinct shapes and characteristics. Mastering this kind of calligraphy means mastering the Arabic alphabet, which consists of a script of 28 letters

distinguished by a dot or dots placed above or below the letter. Discussing the similarities, as well as the differences, between traditional Arabic calligraphy and other mainstream forms, Alyousef tells us: “The main similarity is the skill. Arabic, Latin and Chinese calligraphy all require a lot of patience and practice. Yet the differences can clearly be seen in the way you acquire that skill. Arabic calligraphy needs a lot of control when moving the slanted cut pen on the paper and a lot of retouching and refining is done to complete an art piece. Latin requires a steady hand, but some areas do need quick and sharp moves to achieve the desired form, and usually they use broad straight cut pens. In Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, the artist uses a delicate brush held almost perpendicularly to create strokes with quick sharp movements. “Looking at my paintings, the most recognisable characteristic is the strong motion of gestures that is suggested by lines. I focus on defining the contour of letters and showing their unique forms with lines, and this works in harmony with the other important component, which is colour, as well as coloured spaces.” Constantly evolving, while calligraphy has been adopted and embraced in many modern day aspects, from logo creation to graffiti-style paintings, its unbreakable link back to religion and ancient expression remains a significant part of its enduring appeal. —— For more information about this artist’s work, visit: majidalyousef.com

a historic space ——— Delve into the UAE’s rich past at heritage heartland Qasr Al Hosn

A sense of the past is keenly felt at Qasr Al Hosn, which started life in the 1760s as a simple coral and sea stone watchtower overlooking the ocean. In the years since, the site has undergone several evolutions but has always remained of great importance to the emirate. Sheikh Shakhbut Bin Dhiyab, who ruled Abu Dhabi from 1795 until 1816, transformed the watchtower into a fort. During the 1970s and 1980s, conservation work then turned the fort into a museum displaying archaeological collections, artefacts and pictures telling the emirate’s story. Now fondly considered the historic heart of Abu Dhabi, a year-long renovation project will preserve the area as well as adding green spaces peppered with plants and ghaf trees. New exhibitions, cultural events and cafés will complement the already renowned annual Qasr Al Hosn Festival, ensuring the site’s prominence for years to come.

Raising the bar ——— Executive chef Amit Sood at Marriott Hotel Al Forsan chats about the hotel’s exciting culinary offerings and how he comes up with new menu ideas

The latest addition to Abu Dhabi’s hospitality scene, the luxurious Marriott Hotel Al Forsan entices with six dynamic culinary offerings, including Couture, a stylish and modern lounge where you can enjoy tapas or after dinner drinks in a relaxed setting, and Khayal, an interactive dining concept where appetisers, salads and desserts are prepared at live cooking stations. At the helm of it all is executive chef Amit Sood, who is passionate about “delivering high quality food and memorable experiences”. Having only arrived in the UAE six months ago, which is when he joined the team at Marriott Hotel Al Forsan, Sood says that diners in the capital are savvy about their food choices. “There is an increasing focus on health, and the food that is good for you. Consumers are also very conscious of value for money; a dining experience on its own is no longer enough. Superb food and attentive service in a lively setting will always be the winning formula.” Hailing from Lucknow, India, Sood explains: “I discovered my passion for food at a very young age which gave me the motivation and enthusiasm to explore the culinary field, experiencing new flavours and creating new dishes along the way. So I attended a hotel management school in India, followed by a degree in culinary arts that kick-started my career in the kitchen.” As a hands-on chef, Sood is responsible for the day-to-day operations including menu implementation for all the restaurants in the property, the recruitment process, selecting suppliers and receiving produce, as well as actual service. He says: “I’m also lucky enough to have the support and commitment from a skilled executive culinary team.” With an eclectic range of dining concepts on offer at the property, coming up with new ideas for a dish is no small feat. “Generally, every dish on the menu

goes through a rigorous approval process. Each dish is then presented to the culinary team for tasting, including a review of all ingredients and flavours, as well as the presentation of the dish. We source high quality ingredients from all over the world and local quality ingredients where possible. After the various tastings, we go away and work on the dish, based on all the feedback and then schedule another tasting until the team is fully satisfied.” Guest feedback is another important aspect that Sood takes into consideration when designing menus. He reveals: “We take pride in turning around new food concepts, according to market needs and demands. We are always looking for new ways to evolve our offerings, which is why it’s important that my team and I go out to try new restaurants. This way, we can also keep an eye on the competiton.” Ask him to pick the most outstanding dishes from the property’s many restaurants, and Sood is hard-pressed to choose but he eventually reveals: “One of my favourite dishes in The Grill is the tomahawk steak. It’s so tender and juicy, and bursting with flavour. It’s also grilled on live charcoal which adds a smoky flavour to the dish. Other favourites include the butter chicken and the rogan josh which are served with naan bread and rice.” Not one to rest on his laurels, Sood says that healthy competition inspires him to always do his best. “We are constantly looking for ways to evolve, while staying humble. Abu Dhabi is a challenging market but we will continue doingwhat we do and setting the benchmark for our competitors.” —— For more information about the restaurants at Marriott Hotel Al Forsan or to make a reservation, contact: 02 2014000

ASK THE CONCIERGE

Abdulaziz Al Marri, chief concierge at Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island, highlights the best visitor experiences

The capital of the United Arab Emirates and the largest of the seven emirates, Abu Dhabi is on the rise. The city’s culture is rooted in rich Islamic traditions and visitors will find strong international influences that make Abu Dhabi a world-class destination. Start your tour of the capital by paying a visit to the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. One of the world’s largest places of worship, some of the awe-inspiring features of this architectural marvel include 82 domes, more than a thousand columns and 24-carat golden chandeliers. Plan your visit about an hour before sunset to take in the beauty, and all the intricacies of the mosque, as you watch the sun go down. To discover local traditions, Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is a good place to start. The falcon is the UAE’s national bird and has an important role to play in Emirati culture. At the hospital you will gain a unique insight into the world of falconry and the symbolic relationship between falcons and the people of the UAE. For another glimpse into Abu Dhabi’s past, a visit to the Heritage Village by the Corniche Breakwater

For couples looking for a rom antic experience, I highly recommend a visit to the exclusiVe couple’s suite at Dahlia SPA, WHERE BESPOKE TREATMENTS ARE CRAFTED BY skilled ther apists to rejuvenate the body

won’t disappoint. Spend a leisurely afternoon experiencing the UAE’s culture as you make local handicrafts such as clay pots and leather bags. Another tourist site not to be missed is the Gold Souk in Madinat Zayed. Even if you’re not in the market to purchase gold, a stroll through the dazzling souk is a fascinating experience. You will find a multitude of stores showcasing a variety of jewellery designs, from classic and opulent to Middle Eastern inspired patterns. Escape the hustle and bustle of city life and visit the tranquil haven of Zaya Nurai, a Maldivian-inspired boutique resort on Zaya Nurai Island or, if you fancy taking in panoramic views of Abu Dhabi’s breathtaking skyline, you could always hop on board a luxurious 55-foot Azimut Yacht and cruise along the Arabian Gulf with a private chef in tow. For culinary delights, visit Butcher & Still at the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island. This 1920s Chicago-inspired steakhouse has a rustic, retro design. Eclectic details continue right into the bathrooms, where bullet casings accent the tile work, echoing the era of Al Capone. The menu showcases exceptional steaks and sides, while meats are flown in from specially selected farms in the US with a focus on quality prime cuts. A private elevator takes guests down two levels to a dining room called The Hideaway, which is like a secret speakeasy with its own exclusive bar. For couples looking for a romantic experience, I highly recommend a visit to the exclusive couple’s suite at Dahlia Spa where an array of bespoke treatments crafted by skilled therapists are sure to relax and rejuvenate the body. Featuring waterfront views, the spa is a haven of tranquility where you can unwind after a busy day taking in all there is to do in the city. 3
