Breguet, the innovator. The Marine 5827 chronograph
Having become a member of the Board of Longitude in Paris in 1814, Abraham-Louis Breguet was appointed Horologer to the French Royal Navy by Louis XVIII the following year. This prestigious title, embodying exceptional scientific competence, is now perpetuated through the Marine collection and the Marine 5827 chronograph, which features a central chronograph minutes and seconds. History is still being written...

—— When it comes to finding the perfect holiday present, Montblanc’s latest collections have something to suit all tastes. Anyone would be delighted to unwrap their festive gift and discover the distinctive black and white logo of the luxury maison underneath. Montblanc began its journey with the creation of impeccably crafted luxury writing instruments, and this continues to be a cornerstone of the brand. The highly covetable new Montblanc Muses Marilyn MonroeTM Special Edition writing instrument celebrates Marilyn Monroe, one of the greatest style icons of the 20th century. Every detail of the design is an ode to the beloved screen siren. The distinctive shape of the pen recalls Monroe’s signature high heels, while the bright red hue is inspired by her favourite shade of lipstick. The cone of the writing instrument is engraved with diamond shapes, a reference to her most famous song, Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.
THE WRITING INSTRUMENT CELEBR ATES M ARILYN MONROE, ONE OF THE GREATEST ST YLE ICONS
However, it’s not diamonds that are the chosen gemstone to feature on the pen, but pearls; the writing instrument boasts a single pearl, inspired by a necklace that was a gift from Monroe’s husband Joe DiMaggio during their marriage. With impeccable attention to detail and allusions to the cinema icon, the Montblanc Muses Marilyn MonroeTM Special Edition makes the perfect gift for film fans. Another collection inspired by a bygone era, the Montblanc TimeWalker Collection will impress those with a passion for motorsports. Meeting at the intersection between style and performance, it’s a celebration of how the art of precision time-keeping is woven into the very fabric of Montblanc’s DNA. The raised, vertically brushed numerals evoke the appearance of vintage dashboards, while the perforation holes in the straps recall vintage leather driving gloves, both details designed to transport the wearer back to racing’s golden age. Finally, for a gift that travellers will adore, explore Montblanc’s iconic 4810 Westside Collection of must-have accessories. Fashionable yet functional, the stylish leather goods make the perfect travel companions, and are sure to inspire new levels of wanderlust to take into the New Year.

STAR QUALITY ——— David Morris’ managing director Jeremy Morris talks to Concierge about the brand’s glamorous history and timeless appeal
The story of David Morris has stylish beginnings, with roots in 1960s London. During this vibrant decade, the eponymous young jeweller was making a name for himself in the buzzing capital. By 1962, Morris had opened his first outlet, going on to win the De Beers Diamonds International Design Award in New York in 1963 and 1964. By the end of the decade, he’d opened his first West End boutique on Conduit Street in Mayfair. Today, David’s son Jeremy Morris, the company’s managing director and principal designer, speaks proudly of the brand’s bright beginnings and current success in its fashionable London location. “My father launched his first boutique in 1969, but it was the launch of our flagship here on New Bond Street in 1996 that positioned us alongside some of the top jewellery brands in the world and brought us true recognition,” he says. “We have one of the last remaining workshops on New Bond Street and make full use of this luxury. I sketch the designs, and then in our New Bond Street atelier, our very talented craftsmen bring them to life, either with 3D computer models or with handmade casts.” This strong connection to its heritage is one of the many things that sets the jeweller apart, with a 50-year history encompassing three generations of the Morris family. In the jewellery world, the name David Morris is synonymous with exclusivity, rare gemstones, fine craftsmanship and outstanding creativity. “We’re one of the only remaining jewellers with family ownership, and from my father I’ve inherited a true passion to craft the most beautiful jewellery creations that I can conceive,” says Morris. “Our philosophy could be seen to encapsulate classic design, but with a twist. I draw my inspiration from the uniqueness of the
stones themselves, as well as from the people who collect them and wear them. “I am always looking for inspiration; whether from art in the form of paintings or sculptures, or from nature. It’s a very organic process; sometimes I’ll be out walking our dog in the park and an idea will just come to me. I’m also constantly travelling so I draw much of our inspiration from my surroundings. Seeing beautiful places and striking works of art also makes one strive to create beautiful things.” Some of the collections are inspired by the gemstones themselves, such as the brand’s signature rose cut stones. During Morris’ early travels around the Indian subcontinent, he came across a unique diamond shaped like a rose petal. Shortly thereafter, he created the Rose Cut diamond band, followed by further collections featuring the rose cut, including the recently launched Miss Daisy Collection, which features pear-shaped rose cut diamonds. While other jewellery maisons have followed suit in using the rose cut, it remains a signature of David Morris and of its most iconic collections thanks to the round cut of the diamond, the micro-set diamonds that surround it and the diamonds 24 facets. The romantic, antique style gives the jewellery a unique, almost bespoke quality, and therein lies the magic of the brand: customers want something that will set them apart with one-of-a-kind appeal. “We have an extremely discerning, international clientele,” says Morris. “They have an appreciation of quality and craftsmanship and a love for intricate design that transcends trends. Our focus is on the beauty of the stones retaining their inherent character. This resonates with clients who seek unique and exclusive pieces to add to their jewellery collections.”

Indeed, the revered London brand can even count royalty on its list of fans. In 2012, during the Royal Wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, a jewel-encrusted dragon by David Morris featured on the bonnet of the vintage Aston Martin car, which was driven down the Mall. Morris also designed an extravagant one-of-a-kind sapphire necklace, featuring over 110ct of sapphires as well as diamonds and paraiba tourmalines, to mark the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II’s Sapphire Jubilee, which was celebrated earlier this year. The exclusive jewellery is highly coveted among Hollywood royalty, with the likes of Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, and Keira Knightley all seen dazzling on the red carpet adorned in David Morris jewellery. One of the most iconic examples of the brand’s star power was the heart-shaped diamond necklace that David Morris himself designed for Richard Burton in 1965 to give to his then-wife Elizabeth Taylor. Morris also notes that the appearance of the brand in four of the James Bond films “has certainly not done us any harm, and has only helped further our global reach. The David Morris diamond necklace worn by Teri Hatcher in Tomorrow Never Dies was particularly well received”. As the second generation of the family jewellers (his own children are also involved with the brand), Morris continues to be inspired by his father’s vision and wisdom, especially when it comes to buying gemstones. “My father always said that when you’re buying coloured stones, look at the colour at night, because that’s when most people wear jewellery. ‘Over-coloured’ stones look black at night, so I don’t touch them. I look for those with an open colour,” he says. “That’s just one example of many of my father’s pearls of wisdom from spending a lifetime working in this industry. Of course, it goes without saying that he always advocated the value of outstanding design and the importance of old fashioned craftsmanship.” It is this meticulous attention to detail when judging the quality and rarity of the gemstones themselves 12

that sets David Morris apart from other jewellers, and the fact that collections are few, and many pieces are made in limited quantities (sometimes limited to just one piece, in fact) adds to the exclusive allure of the brand. While David Morris boutiques are found in cities all over the world, including London, Hong Kong, and most recently, Paris, Morris notes that the Middle East has some of the strongest demand, retailing in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Jeddah, and describes the region as a ‘fulcrum’ of the business. He attributes this to the local approach to precious jewels. “There is an inherent culture and ethos for jewellery here, more so than in many other parts of the world,” he notes. “We are very fortunate to have developed a strong client base in this region and many of my designs reflect this demand.” While Morris admits that there are no immediate plans to expand further in the Middle East, he does express great ambition for how David Morris will continue to develop in the future. There are plans to introduce more affordable collections to the store in order to keep pace with the ever-evolving market, to open more boutiques and further the reach of the brand online. “We will continue to grow and expand our business in new territories. We will become more digital and interactive. We hope to pass on our love and passion for fine jewellery to a new audience of discerning consumers. I feel exceptionally optimistic about the future.” —— Discover the latest collections at the David Morris boutique in The Dubai Mall. Contact: 04 3499938

ALL THAT GLITTERS ———
Concierge meets Mehran Mahallati to talk diamonds, design inspiration, and following his father into the family business
For the average 16-year-old, the idea of owning your own business belongs firmly in the realm of fantasy, or at least future plans. Yet that was exactly the age at which Mahallati Jewellery founder and CEO Abdul Karim Mahallati began his journey into the world of rare gemstones, one that would lead the then-teenager to owning a marketleading jewellery empire run by two generations of the Mahallati family. He began his career in Iraq, learning this meticulous craft in a workshop first by making smaller pieces such as rings, pendants and earrings. The company went on to set up shop in Dubai for the first time in 1992, and today there are seven Mahallati Jewellery stores located across the city, including a large, luxurious store in the heart of The Dubai Mall. Mehran Mahallati, Abdul’s son and vice president of Mahallati Jewellery, who now oversees the day to day running of the business, notes that Dubai is the only place in the world where the family has Mahallati Jewellery retail stores. Proudly showcasing the impressive collections that populate The Dubai Mall boutique – from elaborate diamond necklaces to an ornate yellow diamond ring drawing a crowd of shoppers to its window display, he notes: “The good thing about Dubai is that the whole world shops here. “That’s why it’s impossible for me to describe to you who the typical Mahallati Jewellery customer is. When our shoppers come from Africa, South America, the Middle East, South-east Asia, how can we say who our typical customer is?
“It’s especially easy to reach our GCC customers. For those from Kuwait or Bahrain or Saudi Arabia, a shopping trip is a matter of hours away. This makes it a perfect location for our retail operations. Plus, Dubai is one of the safest, most secure cities there is. You can truly enjoy your wealth here. People can walk around wearing a 10-carat diamond ring and not give it a second thought. Where else in the world can you do that?” Mahallati laughs as he adds, “Our items are very high-end and sometimes people come into the shop just asking for a bag or a box with the Mahallati Jewellery logo on it. For them, it’s like owning a blue Tiffany box. The packaging is iconic. In a way, it’s a status symbol.” For Mahallati, it was almost always a given that he would go into the family business, which he has been involved in ever since he graduated from high school. After attending the prestigious Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and learning his trade there, he went to pursue his craft in the Mahallati Jewellery factory in Bangkok as a qualified gemologist. Today, Mahallati works alongside his father in Dubai, where he is aligned more with the business side of the industry than the creative design process. “You have to love this business in order to succeed in it,” he says, proud of the mark that the family has made in the region. “The jewellery business has always been about family and about legacy, which is why our success is due, in part, to the fact that we are such a trusted source. My father has built up his reputation over three decades

in this industry, and in this region. He is entirely selfmade. Jewellery is our only business - we don’t invest in anything else. This is what we do, and this is what we’ve always done.” It is not only the Mahallati family legacy that has helped Mahallati Jewellery to excel in this competitive industry. The brand is known for meticulously sourcing the rarest and finest gemstones for each piece, making it a popular choice for shoppers in search of bespoke creations and unique designs. Even the stones used in everyday pieces are rated highly on the GIA scale for their exceptional colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. It’s little wonder, then, that their customisation services are highly sought after, not only by everyday consumers, but by luxury shoppers from abroad and even visiting royalty. Christie Mahallati, Mehran’s wife and one of the brand’s jewellery designers, believes that this success in the field of bespoke jewellery design must be attributed, at least in part, to her father-in-law’s impeccable design instincts. “He is the master of it all,” she says, proudly. “He’s able to look at the stones and immediately be able to visualise a piece. He is also incredibly meticulous when it comes to sourcing stones, and to making sure that the ones in each piece match each other in terms of colour, clarity and cut.” She notes that on a ruby necklace, for example, each stone will have exactly the same shade and depth of red. “I know for a fact that he has certain stones which he has kept for years, simply because he wants to find the right stones to pair with them, to create a perfect piece.

She laughs as she notes that her father-in-law exerts a very practical and pragmatic influence when it comes to toning down her “crazy designs”. Wearability is key, she adds. “He knows how to make jewellery that balances. He understands the importance of pieces that fit seamless into your life. “What many people don’t get is that there’s more to this business than stringing together a bunch of diamonds. He really understands how best to use weight and the cut of the stones, how they hang, where they fall. What he makes, it’s like art, or architecture.” The brand does offer some immensely wearable and delicate options alongside its more ornate, extravagant pieces. Christie highlights her favourites - a collection of necklaces that they refer to as ‘floating diamonds’
necklaces. It’s a distinctive design, where the string of precious gems has been meticulously set onto the chain in such a way that they appear to float in place, rather than be held together by prongs or settings. The overall effect is delicate and ethereal, and the necklace hangs beautifully on the wearer’s collarbones. Christie notes that she wears her floating diamond necklaces everyday. She adds: “Because my father is so well travelled and has so much experience in this business, he understands what different clients want,” says Mahallati. “He gets the Middle Eastern market. He knows what our customers want to wear in Dubai.” —— To explore the collection, visit The Dubai Mall. Contact: 04 4340585

LOCAL TALENT ——— As Dubai International Film Festival returns this month, Concierge meets the creators transforming the local scene
This year has seen the UAE’s cultural scene go from strength to strength, with the opening of a host of new destinations from La Perle by Dragone in Al Habtoor City, Dubai, to the long-awaited debut of Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. Perfectly complementing these new launches is one of the UAE’s most successful cultural highlights, Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), a celebration of local and international cinema that continues to be a great success story. The festival has grown exponentially since its inaugural event in 2004, and when it returns to Madinat Jumeirah for its 14 th edition from December 6 to 13, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the programme is set to be bigger and better than ever before. More than 120 films in 40 languages, including never-before-seen world premieres, will be showcased during the week-long event. One area in which DIFF has always excelled has been as an ardent supporter of local filmmakers. Indeed, as the festival has made its mark on the world stage, its growth and development has run parallel to the representation of Emirati cinema, both in the UAE and beyond. Mohammed Saeed Harib, creator of Freej, the UAE’s most watched animated show, has been with the festival since its early days, and designed the elegant DIFF logo, the head of an Arabian horse. He has also worked on the festival opening sequences and is hoping to have his first live action feature film in this year’s edition. “I love the energy of DIFF,” says Harib. “I’ve seen it grow each year, as my own career has grown. I believe that, along with Image Nation in Abu Dhabi, DIFF is the biggest power when it comes to supporting local filmmakers in the UAE. It gives us a platform to show what we, as Emirati filmmakers, can do and bring it to the rest of the world. “I believe there has never been a better time to be a young, aspiring filmmaker. There are so many ways to get involved, so many potential
avenues. You don’t have to wait to be handpicked, you can go out there and create. It’s hard work, this industry, but if you love it, it’s so worth it.” For Ahmed Zain, an award-winning Emirati filmmaker whose DIFF features - including horror/comedy Grandmother’s Farm and its 2015 sequel - have achieved some success with distribution in cinemas, the festival is an opportunity not only to engage with local talent but to connect on an international stage. At previous DIFF galas, he’s had the opportunity to meet some of his filmmaking heroes, including the late Abbas Kiarostami, an Iranian director who won the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival for his 1997 film Taste of Cherry. “I’ve had the pleasure of showing a few movies over the years at DIFF, but this year I’m not presenting any films,” he says. “I will be attending though, because this year I am acting in a friend’s feature film. That friend is Yaser Al Neyadi, and it’s only a small role that I did as a favour to him. To be honest, I actually think I prefer to be in the director’s chair.” Zain does add that he will begin shooting a new movie in January, a comedy based on life in the UAE during the 1980s. Like Harib, Zain believes that this is the perfect time to be a filmmaker in the UAE. “Everybody has the right to take their chance and direct a movie. Opportunities are better than before in the UAE. However, you need to understand the rules of filmmaking. You need to study the craft. You can’t go into film just to be famous and to get to go to festivals.” Ali Mostafa, another pioneering filmmaker, agrees. Credited as the creator of the first ever Emirati blockbuster, 2009’s City of Light, he states: “We are so proud of the festival, and the way that it has supported the growth of Emirati filmmaking. In many ways, it’s a great time to be an aspiring filmmaker, because so many boundaries have been broken, and so many trails have been blazed.” He adds, “However, this industry is incredibly competitive, and you have to have a thick skin and determination in order to make it.”

THE ONES TO WATCH ———

Don’t miss these highlights of DIFF2017 The Blockbuster: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi The latest chapter in the Star Wars saga is set to thrill audiences on DIFF’s closing night, just as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story did during DIFF 2016. The film sees the return of Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac and the late Carrie Fisher. The Visionary: Guillermo Del Toro From Guillermo Del Toro, the director of critically acclaimed cult films such as Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy and Pacific Rim, comes The Shape of Water, a drama starring Sally Hawkins and Doug Jones. It won the coveted Golden Lion Award for Best Film at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The Documentary Maker: Morgan Spurlock The creator of 2004’s awardwinning Super Size Me will host an in-depth conversation discussing his own career and new documentary Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken. The Muhr contenders: Whispering Sands and Wajib On December 10, there will be a double bill of critically acclaimed Arab films competing in the DIFF Muhr Awards. French-Tunisian filmmaker Nacer Khemir presents Whispering Sands, while Annamarie Jacir presents her Don Quixote Award-winning story Wajib, this year’s Palestinian Oscar entry.
5 Ali Mostafa 6 Nayla Al Khaja 7 Cate Blanchett will be on the jury of the IWC Filmmaker Award 8, 9 &10 The Journey, The Man Behind The Microphone, Panoptic, showing at DIFF
DIFF offers aspiring filmmakers multiple opportunities to throw their hat in the ring and present their talent to the world. For example, the hotly contested Muhr Awards is one of the definitive platforms for Arab cinema, showcasing short and feature films originating from the UAE and the Arab world. Judged by a prestigious international jury, the competition has been an integral part of the festival since 2006. The winner of the Muhr Short Competition will qualify for consideration for Oscar nominations. Then there is the IWC Filmmaker Award, now in its sixth year. Created in collaboration with luxury Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen, each year this fierce competition shortlists filmmakers from the region who have feature-length fiction film projects in development. These directors present their film during the festival’s Dubai Film Market, and the winner of the IWC Filmmaker Award will receive a cash prize of USD100,000. One of the nominees this year is Nayla Al Khaja, a pioneer among Emirati women filmmakers and the founder of The Scene Club, an initiative that brings world-class cinema to Dubai’s film enthusiasts. Al Khaja has been nominated for her feature film Animal, the story of a brother and sister who create an imaginary world to escape from their reality of their overbearing parents. Also in the running are Bahraini filmmaker Mohamed Rashed Buali, for his project Kombars; Saudi director Haifaa Al Mansour, for her feature Miss Camel; and Omani filmmaker Muzna Almusafer, for The Crown of Olives. Al Khaja finds it interesting that the shortlist is comprised of three Middle Eastern women filmmakers and just one man, and believes that cinema is one area in the UAE where women are thriving in the field. “I feel as if, at this moment, there is a growing wave of women’s empowerment in the region. DIFF OFFERS ASPIRING FIL MM AKERS MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES TO THROW THEIR HAT IN THE RING AND PRESENT THEIR TALENT TO THE WORLD
Al Khaja notes that the balance between the number of male directors and female directors is far more even in the UAE than in Hollywood, where women are still woefully underrepresented. “I feel like we have achieved this ahead of the Western world, because Western cinema had a 100-year head-start - but it was started by men. Hollywood was, and is, very much a boys’ club. In the UAE, where our local film industry is just taking off, it’s really great that we can establish a greater sense of gender equality from the early stages, and set that as a precedent.” The issue of censorship is one that every Arab filmmaker in this region however must address, although Al Khaja notes approvingly that DIFF has never censored any of its screenings. “We do have certain limitations compared to the West in one sense, simply because of the cultural identity of the country. So I suppose in that sense, my painting palette as a filmmaker is perhaps more limited than if I was somewhere else. But I believe that my voice, as an Arab woman, is much stronger here than it would be in the Hollywood mainstream film industry. “Sometimes limitations can force you to be more creative. If I can’t say a certain thing or shoot a certain scene, it forces me to find another way to get my message across. I think for now I will continue to ride this wave and see how far UAE filmmakers can go when it comes to pushing boundaries.” Like Mostafa and Zain, Al Khaja has advice for young artists who aspire to participate at DIFF themselves one day. “Telling you to ‘follow your dreams’ is easy to say, but hard to do, so I like to offer practical advice. First, find out which productions are happening in the country - contact the Dubai Film and TV Commission - then volunteer to be an intern on set. Try out different departments so that you can really understand which part of the industry you want to join. Learn from the professionals. The experience will be invaluable.” —— For more information, visit diff.ae

A WORK OF ART ———
As Louvre Abu Dhabi opens its doors, we discover a new UAE icon 10 years in the making

The newest addition to Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape is, in every sense, a work of art. A ‘universal gallery’ that opened its doors to the public on November 11, 2017, Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by the Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning Jean Nouvel, is a masterpiece 10 years in the making. Located on the coast of Saadiyat Island, the exterior is almost in danger of upstaging the treasures that lie within. The instantly iconic dome, 600-feet wide and weighing in at over 7,500 tonnes – around the same as the Eiffel Tower in Paris – appears to float above the white-walled buildings, thanks to Nouvel’s ingenious hidden support pillars. The dome is a complex construction of intricately layered aluminium and stainless steel panels that allow dappled sunlight to filter through, creating a galaxy of dancing points of light on the minimalist walls and floors. According to Nouvel, the effect was inspired by the way sunlight streams in through the gaps in palm frond roofs, once a common sight in the region. The layout is another nod to the UAE’s heritage. There are 55 interconnected buildings, 23 of which are galleries, that visitors reach by walking along narrow alleys and plazas, moving from light to shade and back again, in a way that evokes a traditional Middle Eastern medina. As you wander from building to building, unexpected turns lead to pools of navy or turquoise water, where the land meets the
ocean. Nouvel’s use of water throughout is artistic, symbolic and functional. It highlights the island location of Louvre Abu Dhabi, as well as the important role that the sea has played in the UAE’s history. There are also plans in place that will allow VIP visitors the option of arriving by sea, a fittingly glamorous move for what is the world’s most expensive gallery. However, it is not only the jaw-droppimg multi-billion dirham price tag that sets Louvre Abu Dhabi apart in the art world. It is also the first ever ‘branch’ of the Louvre to be created and built outside of Paris. And thanks to the partnership with the original Parisian museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi will be able to use the iconic name for the next 30 years. Step inside and you’ll find over 600 artworks ranging from the classic to the contemporary. Around 300 pieces are currently on loan from over a dozen galleries around the world, including the Musée d’Orsay, Centre Pompidou and the Chateau Versailles. An estimated 235 artworks in the gallery are part of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s growing collection. Like the Nouvel-designed dome and its illuminating sunlight display, Louvre Abu Dhabi invites you to “see humanity in a new light”. The exhibitions are arranged across 23 galleries in 12 sequences, and are deliberately organised in chronological order in such a way that it draws parallels between different cultures and

their progression over time. Because these 12 sequences trace the evolution of humanity through the years – under titles including The First Villages, The First Great Powers, Asian Trade Routes, From the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, The Magnificence of the Court, and Challenging Modernity – walking through Louvre Abu Dhabi feels like travelling through time. In a room entitled The Great Vestibule, each of the displays show three figures or objects from different cultures arranged according to a common theme. One of the earliest involved three similar female figurines, all from around 2,000 to 3,000BCE – one from ancient Greece, another from Syria and the final one from Gabon in Central Africa. The overall effect is a celebration of what different cultures have in common, rather than what separates them. The First Villages exhibition immediately sets the bar for the rest of your visit, showcasing an astounding collection of ancient art and relics. Among the highlights is a carefully preserved, monumental two-headed statue from Jordan, estimated to date back to around 6,500 BCE, which is on loan from the country’s department of antiquities. Another notable piece is an enigmatic female figurine, entitled Woman dressed in a Woolen Garment. Hailing from Central Asia and dating back to around 2,300BCE, it is thought to be a protective deity. For history buffs, the gallery entitled The First Great Powers, is certain to delight, particularly with its collections of ancient Egyptian artefacts. An enormous, solemn statue of Rameses II appears to stand guard over the display from the centre of the room, while visitors can wonder at an ancient Egyptian coffin and mummy wrapping dating back to 950BCE, along with a Sphinx statue from 600BCE with the body of a lion, the wings of a bird of prey and the face of a woman. This gallery also showcases the evolution of battle, with a fascinating mix of war artefacts including ancient weapons. This theme continues somewhat into the third gallery, Civilisations and Empires, which takes an in-depth look at the ways in which different countries and cultures have evolved politically, with an emphasis on Greek heroes such as Socrates and Alexander the Great. It is the fourth gallery that is perhaps the most fascinating of them all. Entitled Universal Religions, it houses an intriguing mix of religious texts and art from all over the world. A 13th century

IT IS STRIKING TO SEE DIFFERENT RELIGIONS AND CULTURES CELEBR ATED AND IT SEEMS TO M ARK A SIGNIFICANT MOMENT FOR THE UAE
Quran from Syria, a dancing Shiva statue from ancient India, a 15th century Torah from Yemen and a 13th century Gothic bible from France, are all located within the same gallery. It is striking to see diversity and unity between different religions and cultures celebrated, and it seems to mark a significant moment for the UAE, establishing itself not only as a cultural hub but as a positive force for tolerance and inclusion. While Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection of historic artefacts is impressive, for any art lover it is the modern art sequences that are sure to generate plenty of buzz. Never before have residents and visitors in the UAE enjoyed such access to so many works by some of the world’s most celebrated artists. Among the highlights is Self Portrait (1887) by Vincent Van Gogh. The iconic Dutch artist painted over 30 self portraits between 1886 and 1889, and the one currently on loan to Louvre Abu Dhabi, with its vivid, almost erratic brushstrokes and vibrant colours, is so different from the others that it’s arguably one of the most interesting. Leonardo da Vinci’s La Belle Ferronniè is also on display, currently on loan from the Louvre Museum. Depicting an unknown woman, it’s the source of almost as much speculation as da Vinci’s other iconic work, the Mona Lisa. La Belle Ferronniè is notable for
being the first painting by the master to leave Europe, and the first of his works ever to be exhibited in the Middle East. There is such a wealth of iconic modern art on the walls that it would be easy to miss some of the key pieces as you wander through. Keep an eye out for Picasso’s Portrait of a Modern Woman; conceptual abstract pieces by Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock; Andy Warhol’s Big Electric Chair; and René Magritte’s The Subjugated Reader, which is now part of the museum’s permanent collection. Given the exceptional breadth of art on display, access to Louvre Abu Dhabi is remarkably affordable, with prices starting at AED60 for adults, AED30 for those aged 13 to 22, and free entry for children (there’s a dedicated Children’s Museum too). Visitors can also opt to become members of the Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Club for AED450 per year, and receive access to the museum for themselves and a plus-one. Along with its permanent collections, Louvre Abu Dhabi is also set to host four temporary exhibitions per year. The first one, currently on display, is entitled From One Louvre to Another, and traces the history of the Louvre Museum in Paris, while celebrating its new connection to the UAE. ——For more information, visit louvreabudhabi.ae

JASON ATHERTON ———
Concierge meets the creator of Marina Social to talk menu inspiration, food trends and Michelin stars
Jason Atherton is in an upbeat mood. The British chef is in town to celebrate the second anniversary of the opening of Marina Social, a casual fine-dining restaurant in the InterContinental Dubai Marina, and a star of the city’s culinary scene. In Dubai’s competitive market - one that sees frequent restaurant openings and a few closures too - Atherton’s venue remains a firm favourite. “I believe that if you offer good food, value for money, look after your guests, and make people feel special then they will come back,” he says. “They’re not going to come back every night, but we want to be one of their go-to spots. We want people to say, ‘When you come to Dubai, you must go to Marina Social’, in the same way that they talk about Zuma, La Petite Maison, Nathan Outlaw At Al Mahara… as long as we stay on that list, I’m happy.” Atherton, who also boasts restaurants in London, Sydney, New York and Hong Kong to name a few, is full of praise for the Dubai dining scene. He believes that it’s becoming increasingly recognised throughout the rest of the world, so much so that it’s only a matter of time before Michelin comes to the city and potentially awards Dubai’s first ever Michelin star. “When they arrive, we’ll all have to be on our A-game. Who knows what they’re looking for? When you’re a young chef, you spend so much time and energy trying to crack that code. But now that I’m a bit older, and have established myself, I just want to cook beautiful food that people want to eat.” When it comes to Marina Social, Atherton describes it as “somewhere to pop in, have a nice meal, a great cocktail and just hang out”. “I think the secret of our success is that we’ve been able to really understand how people want to spend their free time, and to adapt really refined food for a different audience,” he says. This has made Marina Social one of the liveliest restaurants in the neighbourhood, perfect for everything from entertaining visitors with an al fresco brunch on the terrace to celebrating a special event in the private dining room, enjoying a casual roast dinner on a Saturday afternoon or grabbing a late night hotdog and a drink after a long day’s work. The hotdog, called the Social Dog, is one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes – a duck and foie gras sausage with caramelised onions in a sweet brioche bun. Other must-try meals include the steamed seabass with a tomato and
lemongrass fondue, and an Italian beef tomato stuffed with creamy burrata. “I don’t tend to have favourites, but I do like the tomato, and I love the fact that it’s only available in Marina Social and not in any of my other restaurants,” says Atherton. “I like that you can see it on Instagram and know immediately that you’re looking at a picture that was taken in Dubai.” The restaurant menu is refreshed four or five times a year, which is also how often Atherton visits the city. “We don’t have signature dishes, but we do have our ‘greatest hits’. We’ll leave those on the menu and then plan new dishes around that. The plan is to keep doing this, so that we’ll eventually get to a point where everything on the menu is a greatest hit, and it should be difficult to take anything off.” If there’s one thing the menu isn’t, it’s faddy. While Atherton admits that he does pay attention to food trends, he won’t chop and change the dishes on the menu, but will instead look at the reasoning behind them. “Just because Peruvian food is really fashionable right now, doesn’t mean you’ll suddenly find ceviche on the Marina Social menu. What I’ll do is try and figure out why it’s popular – it’s light and healthy, it’s good for this climate – and then look at how we can tweak the menu from that angle. The thing to do is to look closely at restaurants that are doing well and ask yourself why.” Indeed, even when he’s not in the kitchen, the talented chef remains in work mode, dining in other restaurants often and trying to understand what makes them successful. “I just love food. I’m crazy about it. I live and breathe it. I’m basically a 24-hour chef. I feel privileged that I have a job that I love so much, and that even in my downtime I’m immersed in my past time. My notebooks show how obsessed I am with food. One day, when I do my memoir, I’ll take pictures of all my notebooks. I have over a thousand moleskin notebooks filled with sketches, and recipes, and my handwriting. I never leave the house without a notebook. Even when I’m on holiday, I’ll take it with me to the pool. Inspiration can strike at any time.” —— For more information or to make a reservation at Marina Social, contact: 04 4466664 or email reservations@marinasocialdubai.com

TIME ON YOUR SIDE Concierge showcases standout timepieces from the world’s finest horological brands
—— A. LANGE & SÖHNE
The LANGE 1 is perhaps the most recognisable watch ever created by the Saxon manufactory thanks to its generous outsize date and elegant aesthetics. Aficionados can now fall in love with the latest edition of the LANGE 1 Moon Phase, which at first glance closely resembles the previous version, but is, in fact, substantially different. Sitting on the dial is a new moonphase indicator, accurate to one day every 122.6 years. The sky disc beneath the surface rotates on its own once every 24 hours, setting the moon against a bright blue background by day and framing it in dark blue with laser-cut stars at night. ROGER DUBUIS BAUM E & M ERCIER
Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Baume & Mercier’s latest timepiece carries on the rich legacy of the Clifton collection with refined aesthetics and true craftsmanship. Don’t let its sleek looks fool you – this is one of the most complicated date-tracking watches, complete with a perpetual calendar and precise indications of the date, day of the week, month and phases of the moon. In fact, you’ll only need to correct the date before March 1 in the year 2100. Discover more at the Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons boutique in The Dubai Mall. Contact: 04 3398880
Roger Dubuis’ pre-SIHH wonder, Excalibur Quatuor Cobalt MicroMelt, has been turning heads and not just for its brilliant design that makes a dramatic statement with an openworked dial and red, white and blue hues. It’s believed to be the first watch to be made out of a high-performance alloy called cobalt chrome, which is produced using the exclusive MicroMelt technology that represents just 0.1 percent of worldwide metallurgy. DUBAI CREEK, SOUKS AND DUBAI MUSEUM The heart of the city, the Creek is a stunning spot to catch a glimpse of authentic Dubai. See dhows (traditional boats) ply their trade along the waters while early morning visitors will see fishermen at work on the river banks. Also in this part of the city is Dubai Museum, which makes for a fascinating day out with interactive displays and exhibits charting the emirate’s history from its pearl diving days. Stop by the gold, spice and perfume souks for some traditional treasures before leaving this vibrant area.

HAMZA AL OMARI ———
The winner of the VCA Middle East Emergent Designer Prize 2017 shares his top Dubai tips
Dubai is always evolving as an artistic hub. I love Tashkeel, an art organisation that supports locally based creatives. I started working on my own projects there on weekends – I’m easily bored and I get restless very quickly, so I needed an outlet for all my creative energy. I’ve lived in Dubai for five years. After attending university in Vancouver, I returned to my home country of Jordan feeling energised and ready to take the design world by storm, but there weren’t many opportunities for me. Dubai seemed like it was on the up and up, establishing itself as a creative hub, so that’s why I moved here. I currently work as an industrial designer for a multidisciplinary firm, and I specialise in furniture and product design. That’s how I ended up participating in, and eventually winning, the VCA Middle East Emergent Designer Prize 2017, which was awarded by Van Cleef & Arpels in collaboration with Tashkeel and Design Days Dubai. I love working there – it reminds me of being back at university, feeling like anything is possible and having the freedom to create and collaborate with others. I’m also a big fan of Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz. Galleries Night there, when all of the gallery doors throw open their doors to the public, is a wonderful event, where you can hop from one gallery to the next.
When it comes to socialising outside of work, I like to discover small, local eateries that are off the beaten track. I’m a big fan of Al Ustadi, an old Iranian restaurant in Bur Dubai that’s family run and has been there for years. It’s very different from your typical extravagant Dubai experience that you’d find in DIFC or Dubai Marina – although I like those places too! You’ll often find me in Zuma for dinner – it’s one of my favourite places to go. For nightlife, I like Miss Lily’s, Indie or Iris - because these are all places that are lively and upbeat, but you can still have a conversation. When I have visitors, I love to show them the glittering side of Dubai on a Thursday or Friday night, and then do something more cultural and low-key the next day. I’m a big fan of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, with its old buildings and souks. For me, it feels authentic - it doesn’t feel like manufactured culture. I took my mum there the last time she visited, and loved it. I love that Dubai offers that contrast. When I need to unplug, I go camping. Recently, I’ve been shifting further away from partying at the weekends and exploring the outdoors instead. Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah have some great spots where you can set up a barbecue and sleep under the stars.
