The Montblanc Meisterstück Le Petit Prince series pays tribute to author Antoine de SaintExupéry’s popular tale of a pilot who meets a young prince while stranded in the desert

Montblanc Meisterstück Le Petit Prince Special Edition
Illustration from Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
The Meisterstück Le Petit Prince series champions design elements that celebrate the book’s poignant message In an ode to the little boy who taught the world how to live and love, Montblanc’s newest writing instruments highlight the timeless hidden wisdom in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s much-loved book, Le Petit Prince. The power of imagination inspires this collection within the Montblanc Meisterstück range, which has, through the years, played an iconic role in the culture of writing. Saint-Exupéry’s tale chronicles the fateful rendezvous between a pilot and a little prince from a distant planet. The prince recounts his journey from an asteroid to earth and his encounters with six adults along the way, all of whom are overly consumed by their occupations. He also speaks of his meeting with a fox, who teaches him that the important things in life are visible only to the heart. Capturing Le Petit Prince’s central theme of reconnecting with one’s inner child, Montblanc’s latest collection - the Meisterstück Le Petit Prince series - champions design elements that celebrate the book’s poignant message, insightful narrative and the author’s now iconic illustrations. Each piece pays tribute to a character or an element of the story, from the pen’s dark blue hue that evokes the universe surrounding the young prince to the golden star on the clip, which, in the tale, serves as a reminder to the pilot of the little prince’s laughter in the heavens. Embedded on the cap of every piece, you will find the face of a fox, while the pattern also covers the barrel of the Meisterstück Le Petit Prince Solitaire. A closer look at the nibs of each will reveal an illustration of the prince and the fox, a nod to the lessons the little boy learnt from his furry
friend. The duo is intricately engraved in 14-karat rhodium on the Meisterstück Le Petit Prince Solitaire and in 18-karat gold on the nib of the Meisterstück Le Petit Prince Doué Classique Edition, which also stands out from the collection thanks to its contrast pairing of the pen’s blue barrel and platinum-coated cap. Completing the design are key quotes from the original French novel that have been laser engraved onto the crown of each of these writing instruments. The pieces are available as ballpoint pens, roller ball versions and fountain pens. Montblanc extends the writing experience with a special dark orange ink, symbolising the colour of the fox’s fur, and a notebook in Saffiano leather with a print on the cover that pays tribute by the author’s illustrations. The story has also inspired a selection of men’s accessories including a pair of round stainless steel cufflinks, a stainless steel and blue lacquer money clip and a woven leather bracelet with a yellow star. The complete Meisterstück Le Petit Prince collection embodies the cultural influence of Saint-Exupéry’s story. And just as the ideas, dreams and thoughts that the titular character shares with the world around him, Montblanc reaffirms that writing is a gift to be passed from one generation to another with positive thoughts, the sentiment of love and memories that nurture human bonds. Discover the collection at the Montblanc boutiques at The Dubai Mall or The Galleria on Al Maryah Island 02 6764776.

Art à la carte ——
Culinary artistry meets creative masterpieces to present a feast for the senses at some of the finest dining venues in the emirates The connection between art and food existed long before Pablo Picasso painted at La Colombe d’Or. However, since the 1920s, this trend has come a long way. Over the years, the global art scene has moved beyond a traditional gallery setting. Today, masterpieces by renowned artists can be found at some of the swankiest eateries across the world. In local communities, restaurant showcases also give up-and-coming talent the opportunity to gain exposure, while the diner is treated to an all-encompassing experience. Exploring this intrinsic bond between art and food in the emirates, Concierge shines a light on some of the best dining venues that serve gourmet delights alongside a stunning showcase of paintings, sculptures, photographs and more.
La Cantine du Faubourg

Given that the venue is the passion project of artists Pierre Pirajean and Helena Paraboschi, art really is held in the highest regard. Everything from the chic décor to the culinary masterpieces curated by Michelinstarred chef Gilles Bosquet pays tribute to the modern arts. Every few months, La Cantine du Faubourg hosts art exhibitions led by prominent international and regional artists, showcasing some of the finest works by Stephane Dessaint, Ali Cha’aban, Richard Hambleton and Nadine Kanso. At present, adding a playful touch to the venue’s refined setting are pop art paintings by Londonbased artist Camille Walala, known for her vibrant blend of eye-popping colours and patterns. 04 3527105

Curtain call ———
Fans of classical music, mark your calendars for the NSO Symphony Orchestra’s final public performance on April 27
NSO Symphony Orchestra
History will be made at the capital’s Emirates Palace Hotel Auditorium later this month as the NSO Symphony Orchestra bows out in style with a spectacle to remember. Returning to the stage with their annual concert featuring great cinematic soundtracks - this year titled A Night at the Movies... The Final Curtain - the evening will bring together the UAE’s finest maestros one last time with conductor and musical director Andrew Berryman taking the lead. Over the past seven years, the NSO Symphony Orchestra has been striking the right chord with classical music fans throughout the UAE. Iconic pieces performed by the group such as the Fourth and Fifth Symphonies by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s and Symphonic Dances from West Side Story by American composer Leonard Bernstein have left audiences captivated. In 2016, the orchestra also accompanied singer Andrea Bocelli when he performed live at du Arena. The same year, in a magical setting on Yas Island, the ensemble brought Disney’s Frozen to life by performing the movie’s musical score along with a live screening of the film. Going by their applause-worthy renditions of major symphonies, operatic works, film scores and musical theatre pieces from previous concerts, the finale will, without a doubt, be a fitting tribute to the ensemble’s incredible journey.

The NSO Symphony Orchestra has been striking the right chord with classical music fans throughout the UAE Andrew Berryman promises a show-stopping delight on finale night with an exciting programme that takes the audience on a journey through popular movie scores, from the title theme of Star Wars to the swashbuckling soundtrack of Pirates of the Caribbean. The ensemble will also perform French composer Jacques Offenbach’s toe-tapping cancan from Moulin Rouge, the soulful Ladies in Lavender theme, German composer Carl Orff’s epic O Fortuna from Carmina Burana, Russian composer Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and the famous Die Fledermaus Overture by Viennese composer Johann Strauss used in Tom and Jerry in the Hollywood Bowl.

Nurturing Emirati talent has always been the NSO Symphony Orchestra’s mission. In fact, the reason behind the group’s departure from the public eye is to pass the baton to the next generation of creatives. In keeping with its local approach, the evening will also feature original orchestral music by composers Hamad Al Taee and Eman Al Hashimi. Over the years, the NSO Symphony Orchestra has definitely carved a niche for classical music in the region, the success of which can be attributed to the calibre of the 100 musicians who make up the ensemble. But their final public performance doesn’t signal the end of the road for the renowned group. The orchestra will continue to perform for corporate events, weddings and government functions. However, if you’re keen to witness a behind-the-scenes session one last time, the cast will perform an open rehearsal earlier on finale day. Classical music purists keen to watch the ensemble at work and learn how a piece of music is shaped and polished will definitely be in for a treat. There may also be an opportunity to speak with the conductor and artists after the rehearsal, giving you the chance to interact with the very musicians who showed that the UAE has its own musical force to be reckoned with. Sculpted, striking and in a palette of ravishing shades, Bulgari’s latest collection of jewellery echoes the house’s signature design codes while still appearing fresh and fun. Creative director Lucia Silvestri tells us more
Festa Delle Principesse collection sketch
The tales involving the love affair some have had with Bulgari jewellery are as colourful and captivating as the jewels themselves. From the famed fixation shared by screen and stage icons such as Elizabeth Taylor and Ingrid Bergman to the devotion displayed by modern-day royalty, the storied Italian house delivers designs and motifs that embody the essence of women in ways that are both timely and timeless. “The Bulgari woman is and has always been a very feminine woman but at the same time very aware of herself, of her autonomy, of her power and of knowing how to always interpret this,” says Bulgari’s creative director of jewellery Lucia Silvestri. And few know the Bulgari woman better than Silvestri. It was during a chance meeting between the then 18-year-old biology student and Paolo Bulgari (great-grandson of founder Sotirio Bulgari) that the now seasoned gem hunter first discovered her passion for precious stones. An innate fascination that was immediately recognised by Bulgari brothers Paolo and Nicola. As Silvestri rather modestly puts it, “I was the right person, in the right place, at the right time.” From trekking through the depths of Thailand and Sri Lanka to scouring the cities of Geneva and New York, over the years Silvestri, rightly considered one of the best in the business, eagerly embarked on one adventure after the other as she searched the globe in a quest to bring back the very best stones for Bulgari. “One of the f irst things I learned is to select and then acquire gems only if I could see a possible use for them. Which means that in the very act of purchasing, before the design and realisation phases, I was imagining compositions of colours and forms that might suggest the pieces of jewellery they would become.” She adds: “A stone must speak to me, to excite, to give off an energy. I am very sensitive to the energy of the stones and each gem must have all these qualities to make it unique.” In her current role, which she’s held since 2013, Silvestri heads up gemstone acquisition and takes responsibility for overall jewellery design. She insists that balancing both the brand’s 134-year heritage and its innovative spirit is something that now comes naturally. As she says: “I’ve worked for Bulgari for such a long time, its DNA is now a part of me. I know that to maintain a level of style we need to be innovative. I think that we must always excite with something new, but at the same time with something wearable, something that has a recognisable style. In this sense people are aware you’re wearing a Bulgari design. And thanks to our increasingly sophisticated manufacture, an exquisite combination of stones and our signature touch of femininity, we are able to reinvent ourselves in this way.”

The brand often looks to its native city and Italian birthright as endless sources of inspiration. The new Festa high jewellery collection is one such dazzling example of this. An ode to the joy of Italian art de vivre, discover more than 100 pieces, championing a mix of precious coloured stones, diamonds, corals and jade, adorning a new series of necklaces, bracelets, rings and more. Falling into three ‘festival’ themes: Festa dell’Infanzia, Festa della Principessa and Festa della Tradizione, Silvestri explains that the range is filled with childhood memories. “Designing this collection has been an absolute joy, there are colourful balloons, cakes and even ice cream. It was a collection with which we’ve broken the rules but we have been rewarded. It’s a collection that I believe can leave its mark.” With playful pieces like an adorable gelato brooch drizzled with rubies and pavé-set diamonds, and a cheerful cake-inspired cocktail ring crowned with a ‘cherry on top’ cabochon ruby, it’s easy to see why these pieces were so much fun to work on. Another jewellery collection generating plenty of buzz is the B.zero1 Labyrinth, fronted by model of the moment Bella Hadid. Once again Italy’s architectural and artistic heritage serves as the inspiration. Modelled on the Colosseum in Rome, B.zero1 Labyrinth was designed to be an expression of strength and character, one that would empower women with its chic yet unconventional beauty. Seductive curves of white and rose gold in a striking spiral design make this a worthy addition to the brand’s famed B.zero1 Design Legend line and will no doubt appeal to a new audience – as will the collection’s hip new ambassador. Looking ahead, Silvestri points out that it is transitions such as these that she’d like to focus on. “We are reaching a generation that has moved away from more classic and traditional jewellery. To make Bulgari known from a more contemporary point of view, we need to make contemporary what was so triumphant in our past.” Discover the latest collections at Bulgari boutiques in The Dubai Mall 04 3410662 and The Galleria on Al Maryah Island 02 6761414

The Alessa Jewelry experience is characterised by a stunning collection of masterfully designed pieces Signature Hand-Painted Earrings
For the average 14-year-old, venturing into the jewellery making industry during their summer holidays isn’t a likely scenario. But then again, in some ways, Yuvraj Pahuja, wasn’t your average teenager. Having found himself captivated by the art of jewellery craftsmanship from an early age, his sense of curiosity compelled him to dive further into this creative world. And so he did just that by joining his father, Haresh Pahuja, the chairman and CEO of Itan Jewels, to get down to the basics of the business and work his way to the top. “The knowledge and experience I’ve gained coming from a family with a background in jewellery making has been an asset to my career,” says Yuvraj. “As a young entrant into the world of fine jewellery, I was able to master manufacturing, production, operations and design.” With the intent to further comprehend every aspect of the business, Yuvraj also enrolled at the Gemological Institute of America , where he met his wife Alessandra Robles and the idea for Alessa Jewelry was born. Talking inspiration, the young couple believes, love, travel, nature and cultures have all played key roles in the inception of the brand. Yuvraj explains: “We started our journey in 2009, when we decided to merge our passion to create Alessa Jewelry. We wanted to turn our creative vision into wearable pieces of art for the modern woman.” The Alessa Jewelry experience is characterised by a stunning collection of masterfully designed pieces in 18-karat gold. Hand-picked precious stones and fine raw materials sourced from around the globe combine with cutting-edge technology to create designs sure to impress. From dazzling diamond jewellery that channels the wearer’s inner goddess to simple yet standout everyday styles adorned with semi-precious stones, the attention to detail shines through. Elaborating on the behind-the-scenes journey of each new range, he says: “Alessandra and I are both involved in the creative process and development of every collection and every new piece. I study the making of each piece from the beginning to the end to ensure our quality standards are always maintained while Alessandra designs. Every step we take together has brought us closer to where we need to be.” Today, the brand is on track for regional and global expansion, having established a flagship boutique in Dubai’s City Walk district as well as two stores in Robles’ hometown of Guatemala. The brand also boasts its presence across more than ten locations worldwide. Ensuring the future looks bright, not only for the brand, Alessa Jewelry also believes in creating a stronger foundation for future generations. “Giving back is one of the core values of the brand. Every year, we design a collection called Give Wings with the mission to help educate children in Guatemala.” Proceeds from the sale of each piece featured in this limited collection are donated to the brand’s non-profit partners who provide healthcare services and education to the city’s underprivileged youth. When it comes to Yuvraj’s favourites, he says: “I was able to master the art of bangle manufacturing at a young age and the Spectrum Bracelets are one of my biggest achievements as well as one of my favourite creations so far.” The bracelets are a local favourite too, as every hand-painted piece is designed in 18-karat gold and adorned with diamonds. Raising the bar higher with every new collection is no easy feat. But the brand’s success story is a testimony to the fact that great things come from hard work and dedication. “Coming from a family of jewellers, it has always been my dream to establish my own jewellery brand. Sharing this dream with my wife has been amazing. Together, we work hard every single day to create a jewellery experience people desire while ensuring we always stay relevant and exciting.” Visit the Alessa Jewelry store in City Walk, Dubai

Taste of Thailand ———
Chef Nguyen Thani, head chef at Thiptara, Palace Downtown, talks Thai flavours and Songkran plans
April is a special time in Thailand, as it’s the month when the country celebrates Songkran, also known as Thai New Year. It’s also the perfect time to revisit one of the city’s finest Thai restaurants, Thiptara at the Palace Downtown. This elegant establishment has enjoyed over a decade on the city’s dining scene and still boasts some of the best views in Downtown Dubai. Head chef Nguyen Thani has been running the show for years, so we sat down with her to talk all things Thiptara, from where she gets her inspiration from in the kitchen, to what brings guests back to her restaurant time and time again. Plus, she takes us through her favourite dishes on the menu. 1
Tell us a bit about your journey as a chef? ? “As a child, I was curious to understand how my mother prepared her dishes and started helping her so I could discover her secrets. The kitchen has been my world since childhood and it was always my aspiration to become a chef. I love my job and being able to introduce diners to the best of Thai food. Thiptara attracts tourists from all over the world and it’s a privilege to welcome them to the property and serve them great food.” What is the concept behind Thiptara? “Thiptara is an authentic Thai restaurant, renowned for its specialised Bangkok-style cooking. We are blessed with a beautiful location offering stunning views of The Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa, which people can enjoy while dining on the best Thai food in the city. We also source our traditional ingredients carefully to create authentic Thai flavours.”
78
What is the biggest mistake people make about Thai food? “There is a misconception that to make good Thai food, you have to apply a lot of spices. Yes, Thai food does have a spicy kick to it, but the spices need to be applied in a measured and concerted way by a chef who knows their way around the kitchen.” What is your favourite dish on the menu? “Oh, there are so many to choose from. I always recommend Thiptara’s famous Gaeng Kiew Wan Gai. This traditional dish is tender chicken, cooked in a green curry with eggplant and sweet basil leaves. It’s definitely our best dish with customers – we serve around 3,000 of these per year! Another favourite is the Tom Yum Goong, a type of hot and sour soup. I would also recommend the Pla Hi-Ma Yang. This is Thiptara’s version of the famous Asian seafood dish of grilled blackened cod, it’s served with crisp onion and barbecue sauce. We also have special dishes planned for Songkran, so watch this space.”

Where do you get your inspiration from as a chef? “I was always inspired by my mother’s role in the kitchen, she was such a talented chef and I always wanted to follow in her footsteps. Travel has also been a big source of inspiration for me, and after university, I travelled all around Asia, learning about the diverse variety of ingredients, flavours and cooking methods, which were so different in each country.” What do you think of the current dining scene in Dubai? “Dubai’s dining scene is world class, there’s no doubt about it, with an incredible depth and breadth of cuisines available. With that in mind, I am very proud that Thiptara has maintained its edge as one of Dubai’s best Thai restaurants for so long. Not many people know this, but Thiptara is actually 10 years old - we celebrated our anniversary back in November - so we are very proud to have made such a mark on such a competitive dining scene as Dubai’s, and to continue to thrive after a decade.”
“Thiptara has maintained its edge as one of Dubai’s best Thai restaurants” 6
What is the best part of your job? “Because of our sought-after location in Palace Downtown, and our beautiful views of The Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa, we have a lot of tourists visiting Thiptara. I love knowing that I have the opportunity to introduce diners to the best of Thai food and knowing that it’s me who gives them the pleasure of experiencing impeccable Thai cuisine.” 04 8883444 or

Beachfront lounge at Shimmers
Beach bites ——
For fresh Mediterranean flavours and gorgeous views of Dubai's Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, book a table at Shimmers What makes the perfect al fresco meal? It’s an important question when you’re in the UAE. Blessed with year-round sunshine and idyllic weather (most of the time), dining outdoors is all part of the experience of being here, for residents and visitors alike. The best al fresco dining spots are the ones that provide beautiful views, great service and tasty dishes. we’re pleased to say, Shimmers delivers on all counts. Located at Jumeirah Mina A’ Salam, the chic yet relaxed eatery has a distinctive Mediterranean vibe. It sits right on the beach, overlooking the ocean, with tables on its deck and comfortable chairs and sofas on the sand itself. The promenade of beachgoers wandering back and forth through the surf in front of you adds to the feel of being on a summer holiday in a sunkissed coastal town, as do the white-washed wooden pillars, rustic furniture and the blue-green mosaic dishes that decorate the walls. But in truth, you might not even pay that much attention to the décor, because the views in front of you are mesmerising, to say the least. If you have visitors in town (or are one yourself), the sight of Burj Al Arab Jumeirah from Shimmers is spectacular, with the distinctive sail-like shape towering above the sand and surf, completely unobstructed. Soutzoukakia
Despite the iconic landmark's ubiquitous presence on so many holiday postcards and Instagram posts, Burj Al Arab Jumeirah is still quite breathtaking, and makes the perfect backdrop to your meal. Fortunately, the food at Shimmers lives up to its stunning setting. During our visit we notice the menu has a distinctively Mediterranean vibe, and a focus on fresh produce and simple recipes. For a leisurely lunch, we would definitely recommend working your way through the Greek starters. Meat lovers will enjoy the soutzoukakia - juicy, tender patties served in a delicious cumin-scented tomato sauce, complemented by a creamy yoghurt topping. For a meat-free option, the tyrokafteri is a must-try: a traditional Greek spicy spread made with feta cheese, capsicum and dill, served with olive bread. Keep in mind that in the evening, there are a lot more traditional Greek dishes to sample. When it comes to main dishes, the chefs at Shimmers favour unpretentious lunchtime recipes - think fresh salads, classic sandwiches and grilled meats and fish. There’s definitely a strong focus on seafood, from the catch of the day to the ‘Sta Karvouna’ or ‘from the coals’ menu. A highlight is the garides sharas, grilled prawns with roasted vegetables, simply dressed in a mix of fresh herbs, lemon and olive oil. The mosharisia brizola is another excellent choice - grilled rib-eye steak served in a mouthwatering garlic butter sauce, plus chips seasoned with garlic, rosemary and salt.

From the chef “Imagine a stretch of Greek paradise along the pristine Jumeirah coast; a place where you can enjoy some of the freshest dishes while watching the light shimmering off the gentle waves. It all comes together at Shimmers, whether you’re dining or lounging; whether you’re there before, during or after the sun dips behind the sea. We aim for the warmth of a traditional Greek family meal, with a casual, toes-in-the-sand ambience by day and a chic, relaxed place to dine at night. We welcome diners to share wonderful experiences, that's what food is about.”
Head chef, Yiannis Katsikas
Bougatsa
Dessert is also a refreshingly uncomplicated affair - you could have a couple ice cream scoops, a dollop of sorbet or a simple serving of creamy greek yoghurt with a swirl of honey and crushed walnuts. Though in our opinion, the best dessert by far, however, is the bougatsa from Thessaloniki, a crispy, slightly burnished pastry filled with a sweet, creamy semolina custard and dusted with icing sugar and cinnamon. Order it with a strong espresso and watch the world go by. Mosharisia brizola

TH E LA S T W OR D
Ebraheem Al Samadi Forever Rose’s chief executive officer shares his Dubai lifestyle with Concierge Dubai is the place I call home. On a personal front, with my family living here, I’ve always considered the UAE my homeland whereas, on a professional level, it’s a strategic hub for business, allowing connectivity with the Middle East and the rest of the world. But what makes Dubai a wonderful place to live in is the mix of people and of course, the fact that you can find everything you need right here. If it’s the luxury lifestyle you’re after, you can have it within the snap of a finger. If you choose to live a more family-oriented life on the outskirts of the city, everything is available to make sure you’re comfortable. There are so many options to cater to every wish and the list is endless, considering newer developments are constantly coming aboard. I feel Dubai is a great city to make a life in. There is so much on offer to help lead a well-balanced life. I understand it’s not easy for people to leave their families behind and start anew, but it can definitely be worthwhile. There’s plenty to do when it comes to entertainment and leisure. While my professional life keeps me busy pretty much every day, I love spending every extra minute I have with my family. We love exploring the city together, trying new restaurants, going to the cinema or simply setting out into the desert. My favourite restaurant in Dubai is Kishmish, an Afghani eatery on Al Wasl Road. I also love The Chickery. It’s my go-to spot for comfort food. Whenever I crave delicious home-style chicken, I make my way to this restaurant in La Mer. While I love travelling throughout the region, Dubai’s central location makes visiting international destinations convenient, especially the Maldives which is just a three-hour flight from the emirate. As for short breaks within the UAE, I love going to Ras Al Khaimah for the activities on offer, such as horse riding. In the capital, I particularly enjoy the islands, especially Saadiyat Island. The water is crystal clear and it serves as the perfect destination for a seaside getaway. As for the other emirates, Sharjah has many beautiful museums, Al Ain, with its zoo, is great for families and Fujairah’s stunning beaches are always worth the trip. When it comes to soaking up Dubai’s vibe, I always recommend a trip to the city’s famous five-star resorts for a taste of luxury to friends who visit. One of my favourite leisure activities is heading to the spa at One&Only Royal Mirage Dubai for the Moroccan hammam experience, it makes you feel like royalty. For those lucky enough to live here, I’ve always believed, understanding Dubai’s rich culture and wholly embracing it will help you make the most of life in this vibrant city.
