Abu Dhabi is a destination of distinction and once you visit, you will find it so engaging and exciting, that I’m sure you will return time and time again. We in the UAE capital believe our homeland is something of a welcome contradiction for travellers. It is a place where deep-rooted Arabian heritage is deftly woven into a rich destination tapestry complete with luxury accommodation and world-class leisure attractions. Abu Dhabi is blessed with a diverse landscape. We have 400 kilometres of pristine coastline, over 200 natural islands, vast tracts of serene desert, tranquil oasis towns and a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital city. I hope that you visit and are able to experience as much of this variety as possible. In many ways, this emirate is several destinations in one, from the rustic charm of Al Ain, the birthplace of the country’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the breathtaking vastness of the Liwa Desert in Al Dhafra Region with its mountainous dunes, to the energising pace and brightness of our capital city. We all share a desire to make visitors feel as welcome as possible and hope that they leave with a positive, lasting impression of our homeland, traditions and people. In the pages of this magazine, you will find an overview of the emirate’s widespread appeal and I’m sure you will find much to inspire and entertain you. I hope that you visit Abu Dhabi soon for a relaxing, enjoyable and truly memorable stay. HE Saif Saeed Ghobash Undersecretary——Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi

Worth a thousand words ——

Abu Dhabi Art returns to the capital this month for its 10th edition, promising a packed programme of engaging exhibitions, creative workshops, public talks and live performances

In recent years, the UAE capital has attracted the world’s attention to its thriving arts and culture scene, captivating both art lovers and artists alike. Thanks to the development of Saadiyat Cultural District, the last decade has borne witness to Abu Dhabi’s inspiring transformation into a notable art hub, welcoming talent from all across the globe to contribute to its ever-expanding cultural ecosystem. While the opening of Louvre Abu Dhabi in 2017 put the emirate on the map, the upcoming launch of Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is touted to cement this position even further. But that’s not where this chapter begins. In fact, it dates back a decade (even before the UAE’s love for all things art hit the spotlight) to when the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) launched the capital’s first-ever art show in 2009. Attracting international crowds in increasing numbers year after year, Abu Dhabi Art goes beyond the traditional notion of an art exhibition. The public event brings a diverse programme to the UAE capital every November with exhibitions, workshops, seminars and live performances taking place over the course of four bustling days. And with an inclusive and engaging concept, unlike other art shows of its ilk, Abu Dhabi Art has carved a niche for itself in the Middle Eastern artistic community, making it a must-visit for aficionados.

The 10th edition of Abu Dhabi Art dovetails with the first anniversary of the opening of Louvre Abu Dhabi, returning to Manarat Al Saadiyat from November 14 to 17 to offer a creatively crafted experience that captures the growing influence of the local, regional and international cultural landscape. With more than 40 galleries from around the world set to participate, showcasing ambitious installations and site-specific works, the exhibition will cater to an estimated audience of 20,000 visitors. For the attending galleries, Abu Dhabi Art provides an excellent networking platform – a gateway to the art community in the region. HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, says: “Given its exceptional depth and the quality of its programming, Abu Dhabi Art adds impetus to our efforts to promote the emirate as a cultural hub that is uniquely centred between East and West. Once again, we present an event that breaks the traditional boundaries of a fair, contributing to the global cultural scene while at the same time presenting our national identity and artistic contribution.”

For artists, both established and emerging, the fair offers an invaluable opportunity to exhibit their work on a global stage, promising huge exposure to an international audience. As for those visiting, Abu Dhabi Art presents the perfect chance to soak up the abundance of artistic inspiration and tap into the city’s impressive cultural offering. Among the many highlights of this year’s fair is the return of one of its main sections. The Focus sector sheds light on icons that have shaped the contemporary art stage and will be curated by Dr. Omar Kholeif. The Gateway sector also makes a comeback under a new title, Structures of Meaning | Architectures of Perception. This section explores visual art with installations that touch upon the built environment and languages, and will showcase some of the finest works by 15 international artists including Abdullah al Saadi, Abigail Reynolds, Imran Qureshi, Rachel Whiteread, Hajra Waheed and Lantian Xie.

A B U D H A B I A RT / C A N VA S

In addition to these inspiring displays, other highlights come in the form of the Beyond section, which aims to make art more accessible to all by bringing it into the public arena. A series of large-scale installations, sculptures and site-specific commissions will be exhibited across historic locations in the capital for two months after the event, giving the public an opportunity to enjoy some of the most groundbreaking pieces from the fair. This year’s display will include works by talented young artists Ahmed Saeed Al Areef Al Dhaheri, Dhabiya Alrumaithi and Taqwa Alnaqbi. With such a packed and varied itinerary, it is easy to see why Abu Dhabi Art is one of the biggest events on the capital’s cultural calendar. And as the organisers prepare for yet another exciting season, the emirate paves the way forward, creating a greater impact with its increasingly global presence.

Year of Zayed exhibition, The Empty Quarter Gallery

A man of the people ——

The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan is one of the nation’s most beloved and cherished figures, and in celebration of the Year of Zayed, we look back at his enduring influence You can’t go far in Abu Dhabi without seeing a mention of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. As the country’s first president, and a notable figure in history, he is recalled everywhere you look, in the names of roads, mosques, universities and bridges. But it’s not just the tributes of his people that entrench the charismatic leader in national memory. Evidence of his influence is woven into the very fabric of the country, in the quality of life enjoyed by its residents and the groundbreaking structures admired by the world. This year marks 100 years since the birth of Sheikh Zayed, who passed away in 2004, and to commemorate this national occasion, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, declared that 2018 will officially be known in the UAE as the Year of Zayed. It’s a momentous tribute that is befitting of the nation’s founding father.

Early years

The youngest of four sons, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was born in 1918. His father, Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was the ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1922 to 1926. In those days, the capital was a far cry from the wealthy emirate it is today and its people, even those who belonged to the ruling family, lived by simple means. A time before the discovery of oil, the mainstays of the economy were fishing, pearl diving and agriculture, which produced enough to live on but meant that there was little extra, and so the country remained undeveloped. At the time, formal schooling was rare and the young sheikh took basic lessons in reading and writing, in addition to classes on Islam. Much of his time was spent in the desert with the Bedouin tribes learning about their way of life and the environment. He was taught the traditional practice of falconry, which remained a passion for the rest of his life, and developed a love and respect for Arabian horses. In 1946, Sheikh Zayed became the ruler’s representative in the Eastern Region, where the city of Al Ain is located. He quickly established himself as a capable leader, who was willing to lead by example. The sheikh wanted opportunities for the people of Al Ain and set up the first modern school in the emirate, which he funded with his own money. He also encouraged friends and relatives to contribute towards the development of the region. A big believer in conservation and the environment, Sheikh Zayed had the falaj water transport system rebuilt, providing irrigation for the oases and other agricultural developments. As a result of his efforts, Al Ain is today often referred to as the ‘garden city’ and the ‘oasis city’.

CAN VA S/ Y E AR O F ZAYED

Historical image of Sheikh Zayed

Ruler of Abu Dhabi

Although oil exploration had continued in the Gulf for many years before it was discovered in Abu Dhabi in 1958, it didn’t bring immediate wealth to the emirate. The ruler at the time, Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was unsure whether the revenue would continue and chose to be frugal rather than pour the money into the development of Abu Dhabi. However, his brother, Sheikh Zayed, believed that the money would offer great opportunities to the emirate and, inspired by his ideas, the ruling Al Nahyan family put him on the throne in 1966 to carry out his vision of developing the emirate. As Sheikh Zayed wisely said: “Real wealth is the hard work that benefits both the person and the community. It is immortal and eternal and becomes the value of the person and the nation.” He channelled vast sums into the construction of schools, health care services, an airport, seaport, housing, roads and a bridge linking Abu Dhabi island to the mainland. Just a year later, the British announced that they would withdraw from their treaty with the Trucial States, which included the sheikhdoms of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah. The agreement ended on December 1, 1971, and the next day, the United Arab Emirates was formed. Sheikh Zayed was appointed the president of the new country. Together with the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, he had been instrumental in establishing the federation.

Sheikh Zayed continued to spread Abu Dhabi’s oil wealth not just within the emirate but also throughout the country. He invested heavily in education, believing it to be the key to a successful future. “Building good citizens is more difficult than building factories. Sophisticated nations are judged by the level of their population’s education,” he once said. He was also passionate about the environment and wildlife, and established not only the Al Ain Zoo but also the Arabian Wildlife Park on Sir Bani Yas Island. The survival of the Arabian oryx, a species declared extinct in the early 1960s, can be attributed to the successful breeding programme here. Today, more than 500 Arabian oryx roam free on Sir Bani Yas Island. A firm believer in peace and stability, the sheikh showed that same compassion towards people. He exhibited a widespread tolerance of other religions and was greatly respected by expatriates in the UAE. He also sought to bring greater peace within the Arabian Gulf and the broader Arab world with his humanitarian and aid efforts throughout the region.

The legacy continues

Speaking at the Year of Zayed announcement, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, said: “The Year of Zayed is a great national occasion when we proudly share memories of the life of the founding father, and his gift to us of deeply-rooted values, principles and traditions that have become part of our Emirati identity.” With this in mind, throughout the year, a series of events and initiatives have taken place across the emirates. From poetry readings, calligraphy competitions and photography exhibitions, to student street parades and commemorative art, such as that emblazoned upon Dubai’s Emirates airline, there is no shortage of creative ways to honour this great leader. Accordingly, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, followed the president’s declaration, by adding that the Zayed school of leadership and management had inspired the government to launch the UAE Centennial 2071 – an ambitious government strategy to be a world leader by the year 2071 in four main tenets – education, economy, government development and community cohesion. Sheikh Zayed’s well-known spirit of generosity has also seen the launch of several humanitarian projects, from financial aid to medical donations and educational funding. In an effort to further improve working conditions, officials have said that over 100,000 workers will be provided with legal education this year by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. Speaking at the inauguration of the Founder’s Memorial, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, said: “The Founding Father will continue to inspire current and future generations with his humanity, leadership and wisdom,” – an aspirational sentiment that rings true across the many fantastic projects taking place throughout the Year of Zayed, and no doubt for many years to come.

Camerata Salzburg Orchestra

The sound of music ——— Abu Dhabi Classics returned to the emirate last month for an exciting new season of sensational musical performances The soulful strains of the violin ushered in a brand new season of classical music in the UAE capital last month. The prestigious Camerata Salzburg Orchestra took to the stage at Emirates Palace Auditorium on October 12 with violin virtuoso Renaud Capuçon for a performance to remember. Celebrating the evolution of music through the years, the ensemble presented popular works from the Viennese Classical Period to the New Music Era including Mozart’s Violin Concertos 4 and 5 and Satie’s Gnossiennes – a fitting opening to yet another exciting season of Abu Dhabi Classics. Now in its ninth year, Abu Dhabi Classics has successfully carved a niche for itself as one of the nation’s foremost music festivals. With an ever-expanding roster of internationally acclaimed artists and growing audiences, each year, the programme brings soul-stirring experiences to audiences in the emirate. The current season promises to outdo previous events with a packed line-up that’s not to be missed. Among the many artists and acts set to perform in the capital over the next few months, there’s one name that’s already making history. Abu Dhabi Classics will play host to a world-renowned Bayreuth Festival production, marking the troupe’s international opera debut – the first outside of Germany. The artists will bring Richard Wagner’s acclaimed production The Valkyrie to the UAE for the first time, led by Wagner’s great-granddaughter Katharina Wagner herself. It is well known that obtaining tickets to a Bayreuth Festival production is no easy feat, with waiting sometimes extending for up to 10 years. But fans in the UAE can now enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to catch the iconic musical drama at Emirates Palace Auditorium early next year. Also set to perform this season is renowned French harpist Xavier de Maistre, who will welcome audiences with two captivating performances later this year at Manarat Al Saadiyat and Bin Hamoodah Fort in Al Ain. The festival will also see Chinese pianist Ran Jia returning to Abu Dhabi in 2019 for a solo recital and La Scala Academy Rising Stars gracing the stage at Emirates Palace Auditorium for three engaging ballet performances. With so much on offer, the current edition of Abu Dhabi Classics is sure to hit the right note with the capital’s musical crowd. La Scala Academy Rising Stars

Chasing greatness ——

The Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has taken on extra significance for fierce rivals Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel as each driver attempts to secure his legacy

F O R M U L A 1 / EX P ER I EN C E

When it was announced in early 2007 that Abu Dhabi had won the rights to host a Grand Prix, few would have predicted that the race would take on such significance or that two Formula One rookies would go on to dominate the sport for the next decade. At that time, both Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel were taking their first tentative steps into the sport and there was little indication that the UAE capital would consistently stage the closing race of the season. Yet, just two years later, Vettel would storm to victory in the final race of the 2009 season and the very first Grand Prix to be held in Abu Dhabi. The German driver was concluding his debut season with Red Bull Racing and his triumph at Yas Marina Circuit saw him finish second in the Driver’s Championship – an astonishing effort from the then 22-year-old. This impressive victory on Yas Island was a sign of things to come as Vettel dominated for the next four years. It was also the start of a love affair with Abu Dhabi as he secured two wins and a podium finish in the following four seasons, the most memorable of which was his triumph in 2010. Once again it was the final race of the season, but this time there was a chance to be crowned world champion. Despite heading into the race trailing championship leader Fernando Alonso by 15 points, Vettel qualified in pole position and charged to victory, beating the Spaniard and claiming his maiden world title in the process. It was an astonishing end to a dramatic season and perfectly demonstrated why Abu Dhabi was so keen to host the season-ending Grand Prix. For Vettel and Red Bull Racing, the celebrations ran long into the night. But for Hamilton, who finished the race in second and saw his record as F1’s youngest-ever world champion eclipsed by the German driver, it was the beginning of a long-running duel with Vettel. In the years to come the rivalry would intensify and Yas Marina Circuit would so often prove to be a crucial battleground as both drivers looked to win more world titles. The following season Hamilton claimed his first victory in Abu Dhabi in the penultimate race of the season, but it mattered little with Vettel winning 11 races that year and wrapping up the Drivers Championship with four Grand Prix races remaining. In 2012 and 2013, there was further triumph from the unstoppable German driver as he became a quadruple world champion. Red Bull Racing took the chance to celebrate this remarkable feat in the UAE, with former F1 driver David Coulthard performing doughnuts on the helipad of the famed Burj Al Arab Jumeirah hotel.

39

Just one year later the fortunes of Vettel drastically changed as he arrived in the emirate without a win to his name and with any hopes of a fifth championship long since extinguished. However, having made history by hosting the first ever day-to-night race in 2009, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix would again deliver a Formula One first as double points were on offer in the final race of the season. This ensured that the tussle for the title would go down to the wire and once again a champion would be crowned at Yas Marina Circuit. But after years of success in the UAE capital, there wasn’t much Vettel could do with an eighth-place finishing having little impact as Hamilton produced a flawless drive to claim victory and earn a second world title. While the experiment of double points lasted just one season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix would remain the final race on the F1 calendar for the next four years. And with Vettel confirming a move to the legendary Scuderia Ferrari team, it seemed inevitable that the season-ending race in the emirate would see more title battles between the fierce rivals. Yet the clash many predicted has failed to materialise. In the past three years Vettel has arrived in Abu Dhabi with little to fight for and has been unable to add to his tally of victories in the capital, finishing in fourth place and third on two occasions. In comparison, Hamilton has had numerous reasons to celebrate. The Briton would win a third world title in 2015, ending the season with another impressive showing on Yas Island as he finished in second place. The following year he would round off his campaign with a third triumph in Abu Dhabi as he led the race from start to finish, showcasing his mastery of the challenging track. And then one year later, he returned with a fourth Drivers’ Championship already secured, despite the best efforts of Vettel who had to settle for second place in the final standings. Hamilton would take few risks as he cruised to second place, maintaining his impressive record in the UAE capital.

At the start of the current season and after a decade of domination from Hamilton and Vettel, with Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg the only other title winners in this time, the record book had them down as equals with four championships apiece. And as the season progressed, there was little to separate the two adversaries at the top of the standings. After 13 races, Vettel had won on four occasions and was just 17 points behind Hamilton, who had five victories to his name. The race for a fifth title and an opportunity to define their legacies appeared to be hotting up. Yet just five races later, Hamilton has a near unassailable lead thanks to four straight victories and a third-place finish at the US Grand Prix. The Briton (at the time of press) needs just five points from the remaining three races to win his fifth world championships, a feat that would see him draw level with the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio and second only to the great Michael Schumacher with seven titles. All that is left for Vettel this season is the chance to end on a positive note when the 10th edition of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix takes place on November 25. Once a happy hunting ground for the German, it has been five years since he topped the podium and he will be desperate to reaffirm his dominance at Yas Marina Circuit. For while he may have lost the battle, the war with Hamilton is set to continue for many years to come. Both drivers have contracts with their current teams running until the end of 2020 and it would come of little surprise should Hamilton and Vettel continue to race beyond their current deals. Whatever happens in the coming years, however, one thing is certain; the rivalry will continue. And should Ferrari improve their car, then Abu Dhabi could be set for another title showdown.

Art and soul ——— Explore the inspiring spaces and plentiful treasures of Louvre Abu Dhabi

P H O T O E S S AY/ EX P ER I EN C E

Designed by award-winning architect Jean Nouvel, Louvre Abu Dhabi is a stunning architectural feat that invites you to see humanity in a new light. The exhibitions are arranged across 23 galleries in 12 sequences, organised in chronological order to draw deliberate parallels between different cultures. The sequences trace the passage of time under titles such as The First Villages, the First Great Powers, Asian Trade Routes, From the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, The Magnificence of the Court and Challenging Modernity.

The collection of 600 pieces (around half of which are on loan) is carefully curated to trace the evolution of humanity in nations from across the globe, so that walking through the galleries feels like travelling through time and space.

P H O T O E S S AY / EX P ER I EN C E

For history buffs, the gallery entitled The First Great Powers is sure to delight, particularly with its collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts. The star piece is undoubtedly a huge statue of Rameses II that seems to stand guard solemnly over the entire display from the centre of the room. The statue of the pharaoh is said to date back to the era between 1,279 and 1,213 BCE. Elsewhere, visitors can marvel at an ancient Egyptian coffin and mummy wrapping dating back to 950 BCE, along with a sphinx statue from 600 BCE with the body of a lion, the wings of a bird of prey and the face of a woman.

One of the highlights of Louvre Abu Dhabi is the gallery entitled Universal Religions, which houses a fascinating display of diverse religious art and texts. Visitors will find a 13th century Quran from Syria, a 15th century Torah from Yemen, a dancing Shiva statue from ancient India and a Gothic bible from 13th century France, all sharing the same space. The inclusion of this gallery in Louvre Abu Dhabi seems to signal a new era in the UAE’s cultural scene as it establishes itself as a positive force for tolerance and inclusion.

The opening of Louvre Abu Dhabi has given art lovers in the UAE access to some of the greatest masterpieces in the world. There is such a wealth of paintings by legendary artists on display, that it would be easy to miss something as you explore the various galleries. Keep an eye out for work by the likes of Whistler, Warhol, Magritte, Van Gogh and Da Vinci, who feature throughout the museum’s temporary and permanent collection.

Among its displays is the mesmerising Civilisations and Empires gallery, pictured here, with its collection of artwork, relics and ruins. The fascinating display examines the ways in which different countries and cultures have evolved politically, with an emphasis on the heroes of ancient Rome and ancient Greece, such as Socrates and Alexander the Great. Louvre Abu Dhabi is the culmination of a decade-long project and is the first ever branch of the famous French museum to be created and built outside of Paris. Thanks to a partnership with the original Louvre Museum, Abu Dhabi’s newest icon will be able to use the Louvre name for the next 30 years.

Le Freak, c’est chic ——

Ulysse Nardin’s CEO Patrick Pruniaux talks innovation, new launches and the brand’s stirring #FreakMeOut campaign

The Ulysse Nardin #FreakMeOut ad campaign takes the idea of ‘a fish out of water’ to a whole new level. A tribute to the brand’s 170-year-old maritime heritage, the main shot shows a digitally enhanced great white shark, suspended in the air, “swimming” through the streets of Manhattan. The ad celebrates the unconventional and the unpredictable, terms that easily apply to the Ulysse Nardin brand. Although the Swiss manufacturer is renowned for its fearless approach to innovation in watchmaking, at the same time, Ulysse Nardin has maintained a strong connection to its heritage, crafting its luxe timepieces out of the same building in Le Locle since 1865. “I have always been fascinated by the mystique surrounding Ulysse Nardin,” says CEO Patrick Pruniaux. “Although we are well known to watch connoisseurs, the brand is not that familiar to the public. This campaign is one way of showing what we are all about.” Like the #FreakMeOut shark, Pruniaux’s own career path has also been quite unpredictable. While he was, for a time, well immersed in the luxury watch industry – spending nine years at TAG Heuer in sales and imports – he was wooed by Apple UK in 2010 to work on a mysterious new project that was kept tightly under wraps, even during his recruitment. By the time Ulysse Nardin hired him in 2017, he had worked on several key Apple launches, including the now-iconic Apple Watch.

Freak Out

“Apple is a true innovator, and so is Ulysse Nardin. Apple taught me that you can do anything you want with a product. And Ulysse Nardin has that same sense of ambition and imagination.” For Pruniaux, the introduction of the very first Freak watch in 2001 was a pivotal moment in Ulysse Nardin’s contemporary history. Launched by thenowner Rolf Schnyder, The Freak was unlike anything the horology world had ever seen before: a seven-day watch with no conventional case, dial or hand. Instead, a large boat-shaped bridge structure (another maritime reference) doubled as a minute hand. It was also the first-ever production watch to use silicon components. At the time, no other watchmaker had done something quite so out of the box. Public reaction ranged from curious, to baffled, to downright outraged. Today, The Freak is recognised as a pioneering timepiece and has since enjoyed numerous incarnations. When Pruniaux joined the company, one of his first decisions was to create a Freak collection that honoured the history of this outlandish model, thereby giving the new generation an updated range. One such result was the Freak Vision, which Pruniaux describes as “our laboratory on the wrist”. He adds: “The Freak Vision encapsulates many of the values of Ulysse Nardin, including our sense of boldness.” The latest model, the Ulysse Nardin Freak Vision Automatic, caused quite a stir when it was unveiled at SIHH 2018 earlier this year. Not only is it the first automatic watch in the Freak collection, but it’s also arguably the range’s most wearable incarnation ever, with a sleeker, more modern design along with a new 3D-carved upper bridge inspired by a boat’s hull. Another model that drew in the crowds at SIHH 2018 was the Ulysse Nardin Diver Deep Dive. Housed in a robust 46mm titanium case and bearing the distinctive hammerhead shark logo, the watch is water resistant up to 1,000 metres. Limited to just 300 pieces, it was designed with Ulysse Nardin partner, free-diver and photographer Frederic Buyle in mind.

64

“Fred was the very first person to test it underwater,” says Pruniaux. “As a free diver relying on minimal equipment, he needed something strong and reliable for his explorations. When you’re in a remote location without access to parts or batteries, your comfort and, most importantly, your safety depends on having the best equipment.” More recently, Ulysse Nardin also launched the Marine Torpilleur Military Semper Fortis, a diving watch inspired by the traditions and spirit of the US Navy. “The Ulysse Nardin man is an adventurer”, adds Pruniaux. “He explores his own destiny and creates his own personal odyssey.” Pruniaux could well be describing himself here. As a lifelong athlete who has spent years doing everything from skiing to running and martial arts like Krav Maga, he has always been the type of thrill seeker that the brand connects with. “You know, luxury these days is more about acquiring experiences than it is about acquiring things. So, when you buy a watch, you’re not just buying a timepiece, you’re buying a piece of the brand - the history, the values, the emotions and the experience that surrounds it. Pruniaux tells us that despite his time working with Apple, he has no plans to bring a smartwatch to Ulysse Nardin. “There would be no point in Ulysse Nardin making a smartwatch; I just don’t think it would bring any value to the customer. It would be nothing more than a marketing gimmick, which is the opposite of everything that we stand for. So I will not do it. “My aim as CEO is not to change anything about the company’s DNA. I just want to write another chapter of the same story,” he concludes.

Rule Britannia ——

How two high-flying brothers with a shared love of aviation are on a mission to revitalise the British horology industry and bring luxury watchmaking back to its roots

Ever wondered why we set our watches in relation to London’s Greenwich Mean Time? Surely Geneva Mean Time would make more sense, given Switzerland’s famed watchmaking industry. And yet, during the 17th century, Britain was a leader in the watchmaking world, pioneering some of the most important innovations in horology, such as the first marine chronograph. Created by Yorkshire-born John Harrison, the watch enabled sailors to navigate at sea. It was even used by the famous explorer Captain Cook. In 1800, around half of the world’s watches were produced on British shores. While that statistic has shifted somewhat significantly since then, a handful of watchmakers are hoping to put Great Britain back on the watchmaking map. Leading the charge is Bremont, the British luxury watch brand founded by brothers Nicholas and Giles English. Inspired by their late father Euan English and his lifelong love of mechanical engineering and aviation, the brothers, both pilots, set up Bremont in 2002. They then spent five years in Biel-Bienne studying the art of Swiss watchmaking before releasing Bremont’s first models in 2007. Despite these Swiss origins and the fact that the name comes, somewhat ironically, from France – after Antoine Bremont, a local farmer who helped the brothers following an emergency landing in

72

one of his fields – the brand’s British identity is at the core of its values. “Our goal as a brand is to reinvigorate Britain’s watchmaking industry, and we have invested heavily in machinery as well as training watchmakers to help us achieve this goal,” Giles notes. “The fact that we manufacture our watch cases and watch parts in volume in the UK is something that resonates internationally. “Every Bremont watch is made with the highest level of craftsmanship. All watches leave our workshop with a guaranteed accuracy of -4 to +6 seconds per day, which when you consider that there are 86,400 seconds in a day, is a remarkable feat of micro-engineering.” The family’s strong ties to the aviation world are woven into the very fabric of the brand’s DNA; Bremont watches are known for being put through their paces by the best military pilots in the world, and almost a quarter of the business is dedicated to making bespoke squadron watches worldwide. One of Bremont’s most specially designed, limited-edition timepieces is the Wright Flyer. Created in collaboration with Amanda Wright-Lane, great-grandniece of Wilbur and Orville Wright (the brothers responsible for pioneering aviation as we know it today), the watch is named after the historic plane they flew and incorporates a piece of muslin material taken from the lower left wing of the original aircraft.

“Previously, the recovered materials had only been given to presidents or the likes of Neil Armstrong when he went to the moon,” marvels Giles. “We modelled the design of the watch on Orville Wright’s pocket watch and the priceless material is sealed inside, in a capsule in the rotor.” The funds raised through sales of the watch were used to restore the Wright family home. Like the Wright Flyer, many of the brand’s timepieces are inspired by a spirit of adventure. Despite their obvious luxury appeal, watches are created with the express intention of being able to withstand the most challenging conditions on earth. Hence the brand’s tagline ‘Tested Beyond Endurance’. “When we started, we had a very clear view of what we wanted to achieve – beautiful and classic-styled watches that looked great in the boardroom but were also robust enough to be used in any situation.” One of the most famous examples of this is the Limited Edition Bremont Endurance, which was created with Bremont ambassador Ben Saunders, a record-breaking polar explorer. The watch was tested during his attempt at the first solo, unsupported crossing of Antarctica, a 1,800-mile journey under punishing conditions. With its bright orange strap, light titanium case and the rotating, bi-directional compass bezel coated in Super-LumiNova®, the watch helped Saunders navigate the terrain even when visibility was at its lowest. It’s little wonder that Bremont has attracted a number of high-profile fans known for their sense of adventure. Prince Harry famously wore a Bremont Bremont Supermarine S500

Meanwhile, Hollywood star Tom Cruise, a qualified pilot, and something of a daredevil himself, is known to favour the ALT1-C, which was the very first watch that Bremont produced back in 2007 (although the brand have recently added two new models to the range). There are more adventure-inspired timepieces in the pipeline to look forward to. Along with a new historic limited-edition timepiece, Giles is particularly excited about the Bremont Waterman Limited Edition that launched in July. The new diving watch was created in collaboration with legendary surfer and diver, Mark Healey. “Not only is this new timepiece truly over-engineered, but it has also been a real joy working with Mark, one of the world’s best big wave surfers, free divers and environmentalists,” he says. “We are honoured to be working with an adventurer who is so driven by perfection, the ocean environment and who is totally uncompromising when it comes to his equipment.” Discover the collection at the Rivoli boutique at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi

Island of plenty ———

Zaya Nurai Island's culinary director Marc Abed talks epicurean passions and staying ahead of the game Situated off the coast of Saadiyat Island in the capital, Zaya Nurai Island has so much more to offer than its slice-of-paradise vibe. Tucked away in different corners of the property are six vibrant dining venues which offer everything from Mexican cuisine to Levantine seafood, alongside splendid panoramas of the Arabian Gulf. Ensuring the scene is set for a memorable dining experience, talented chef Marc Abed takes to the kitchens to experiment with diverse flavours and crafting the perfect meal. How did you discover your passion for cooking? “My grandfather was a renowned restaurateur in the 1960s and he passed down his legacy to his son. With a chef for a father, cooking was always a big part of my life. I loved spending time at the family restaurant, where I also enjoyed the privilege of witnessing all of the chefs in action. Dining together as a family was also a daily ritual that instilled in me a curiosity for the culinary arts.” How did your passion bring you to Zaya Nurai Island? “My travels around the world, as well as my work in Brazil, have inspired me to create my own brand of food and the island presented just the opportunity for me to make a difference. Zaya Nurai Island's culinary philosophy also appealed to me. It’s all about a zest for magic, as well as absolute harmony.” How does working on one of the world's most exotic islands influence your craft? “The island fills me with positive vibes and provides a sense of relaxation. The serenity and natural beauty of this place are a constant source of inspiration for me. It feels like a mix of being on vacation and at work. I spent my first two years at the hotel living on the island, which was great as it allowed me to establish a well-structured department from scratch. After that, I decided to relocate to Abu Dhabi city in order to keep a closer eye on food trends dominating the capital’s dining scene. But the plus side to living in the city definitely has to be that I get to ride a speedboat to work every day.” Can you walk us through a typical day on the island? “As culinary director, I start my day visiting all the outlets and ensuring that the kitchens are functional. This includes making sure that the products are properly purchased as per my requirements. I believe that the key to success is the happiness and comfort of my team. That is why I spend a

78

considerable amount of time communicating with them. I also like to use my spare time to research and create new recipes, as well as experimenting with new ideas, to keep up with the UAE's highly competitive market.” Which restaurant is your favourite on the island? “It's Frangipani. The venue is an international restaurant where I have the chance to serve a sample from every culture I have experienced. In fact, I recently took a trip to Japan and earned a Professional Edo Sushi Certificate, which helped me apply time-tested techniques and introduce sushi to Frangipani. And among all the dishes available here, I have a special fondness for 'gankun', a type of sushi featuring an explosion of flavours that balance Japanese and French hints. I always recommend the dish to every guest.” What do you love the most about working in the UAE and cooking for a multicultural audience? “For me, food is the best ambassador of cultures. And the UAE is a melting pot that contains a colourful diversity of people. I truly enjoy introducing my guests to different cultures with my palate of international flavours.” Are there any culinary techniques you swear by? “Profound product knowledge and a respect for classic culinary techniques is always the way to go.” Any go-to dish at the end of every work day? “Nothing beats the comforting taste of a buttery toasted sandwich with cheese and goose ham.” 02 5066222 or

Simply Italian

——

Eager to tuck into comforting Italian flavours, we head over to sleek trattoria Verso, which has been causing quite the buzz on the capital’s dining scene

When you think Italian cuisine, creamy pastas and decadent pizzas are probably among the first things that come to mind. But the stylish trattoria at Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Residences Emirates Pearl has so much more to offer. Perhaps it’s the soulful acoustic soundtrack in the background or the colourful homely touches in the décor, but the vibrant space evokes a sense of nostalgia. The moment you step inside, you’ll feel as though you are in an Italian countryside eatery. Aromas of freshly baked bread, springtime herbs and sauces cooking away in the open kitchen fill the air while the bright and airy space, with views of the hotel’s pool and the Arabian Gulf, make for the perfect setting. And when it comes to the culinary philosophy, Verso proves back to basics never goes out of fashion. It’s been less than six months since the Italian trattoria opened its doors in the UAE capital, yet the chic spot has quickly made a name for itself as a serene seaside retreat.

When it comes to the culinary philosophy, Verso proves back to basics never goes out of fashion Insalata mista, noci e formaggio di capra del piemonte

Risotto al nero di seppia e calamari

And after taking one look at the menu, it’s easy to see why. No frills and fancies, here it’s all about classic Italian recipes. Think mixed bean soup, clam linguine, gnocchi cooked in a thick tomato sauce and calamari risotto. And the more you peruse the menu, the more you’ll see why Verso is not just your average trattoria. We visited on a Friday evening, shortly after Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Residences Emirates Pearl officially opened its doors to the public. We spotted a good mix of patrons, from families sharing a meal with their little ones, to couples in for an intimate evening and groups enjoying a night out. Clearly, the venue lends itself to a variety of occasions, be it date night, a birthday celebration or simply a leisurely afternoon lunch (book the poolside terrace for great al fresco views). There’s plenty to enjoy even before your meal begins and if you’re anything like us, you’ll be keen to walk around the restaurant’s lush herb garden or take your pick of freshly baked bread lined up along the counter dedicated solely to bread and cheese with assorted varieties from focaccia to ciabatta. Sure to also keep you in high spirits throughout your meal is the restaurant’s extensive wine list, boasting the finest varieties sourced from premium vineyards across the globe. The sheer number of classic Italian favourites on the menu means you might need a little assistance when it comes to whittling down your choices. Fortunately, the restaurant’s warm and friendly staff are always happy to help by recommending the most popular dishes. Based on our server suggestions, we opted to start

82

with the artisanal selection of Italian charcuterie. With nine different choices on offer, we narrowed it down to the cooked veal ham, served with crunchy potato crackers and homemade pickles. Keeping things light and fresh (considering the decadence ahead), the garden salad completed our selection of starters. This healthy mix, packed with salad leaves, heirloom tomatoes, purple artichokes, walnuts and goat cheese imported from Italy’s Piedmont region, packs in at least three out of your five-a-day. For mains, we relied on the classic combination of pasta and pizza. The creamy tagliatelle with melt-in-the-mouth lamb and subtle hints of rosemary is a pasta lover’s dream while the diavola pizza, topped with hot beef salami, onions and fresh chillies, tasted incredibly indulgent yet felt surprisingly light. When you dine Italian style, skipping dessert is not an option. And what better way to end your meal than with a delightful tiramisu? Perfectly complementing the robust flavours of cocoa and espresso is the delicate combination of mascarpone and custard, which Verso serves sharing style, in a large platter for all the diners around the table to enjoy over great conversation and laughter. It all comes together nicely as a nod to the Italian way of life.

Asian inspired ———

Running the show at one of the world’s most renowned culinary brands is no easy feat, but Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi’s head chef Eko Ridwan Zulfikar makes it seem effortless It’s only been a few months since its opening, yet Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi is on track to become the hottest hangout among the capital’s chic crowd. Although, you wouldn’t expect anything less from the renowned Parisian export. One of the many talents behind this success story in the making is the venue’s head chef Eko Ridwan Zulfikar. Complementing the restaurant’s picture-perfect setting at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi is a gourmet experience championing pan-Asian, Japanese and Mediterranean flavours, all curated by the culinary expert himself.

Tell us about your journey as a chef. How did it all begin? “I discovered my passion for cooking when I had to take care of my siblings while my mother tended to my sick father. I would help prepare both lunch and dinner after school. This made me realise how much I loved spending time in the kitchen and that’s when I decided to become a chef. During my early days, I was eager to learn new things and this motivated me to participate in cooking competitions, some of which I’m proud to have won. Being born and raised in Indonesia, my culinary background revolves around Asian flavours. However, working across 11 different countries and experimenting with new culinary concepts and cuisines has helped me further develop these skills. In 2014, I was fortunate enough to see the fruition of my efforts when Buddha-Bar Dubai bagged an award for Best Bar Food.”

84

With Asian cuisine, the competition in the capital is fierce. How does Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi stay ahead of the game? “Anybody can follow a recipe and plate a dish. But I believe that our passion and integrity sets us apart and pushes us to achieve the best. As culinary experts, we aim to provide great tasting food and an experience unlike any other. A restaurant is not only about the chefs, it’s also about the service, the facilities, the promotions and the individuality of each staff member a guest interacts with. We work together towards one goal – to make Buddha-Beach Bar Abu Dhabi the best it can be. We motivate our staff to make personal connections with our guests and treat everybody who walks through our doors as a VIP.”

2

What can make or break a dish? “Every great dish has three essential elements. Without these, there will be no taste at all. Time, passion and effort come before any other tangible ingredient and it’s the blend of these aspects that shines through in every dish. If a chef does not put his effort and passion into the dish and does not dedicate the time to better his craft, the results won’t be up to the mark.”

What is it like working in the Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi kitchen? “Every day is an adventure at the restaurant. With a team that feels like family, we are always laughing and joking with each other, but we still work like a well-oiled machine during service hours. It’s entertaining to interact with people from different nationalities and watch the team learn new languages and cultural practices. We are all very close and always willing to jump into other stations and help without being asked. And with new promotions and dining experiences always in the pipeline, it’s quite exciting to put our heads together while experimenting with new concepts.”

When it comes to taste versus presentation, how do you achieve the perfect balance between the two? “We eat with our eyes first, so the presentation of a dish is what makes the first impression and tells you how a meal is going to taste. Having said that, flavour is, undoubtedly, the most important aspect. A dish may not look appetising, but if the taste is amazing, it will leave a lasting impact and also keep guests coming back for more. But finding the perfect balance between the components and presentation of each dish takes practice as it relies heavily on a chef’s experience and creativity. It’s all about understanding portion sizes, colour and textures.”

When it comes to running a team, what values do you consider important? “Family, loyalty and integrity; these are the values that I aim to instil in my team, and this motivates them to always give their best. I also push my chefs to continuously learn and feed their passion. In order to keep things exciting, I make sure to often move them between stations so that they can get the most out of their time here.”

What is the best part about being a chef? “The thrill of living a different day every day. There is never a fixed routine and you never know what the day ahead is going to look like. The kitchen could be extremely busy, stressful and frustrating on one day, but it can also be fun, quiet and entertaining the next. However, I believe a chef’s greatest satisfaction comes from a happy guest. It’s a fantastic feeling when we see guests leaving with a smile.”

When you’re not behind the scenes at the Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi kitchen, what’s your go-to meal? “As an Indonesian, fish head curry is a dish I enjoy cooking. It reminds me of cold afternoons when my mother would have it ready for me upon returning home from school.” So would that be one of the best meals you’ve ever had? “Yes. I’ve eaten at some of the best restaurants around the world, but nothing beats a mother’s home-cooked meal.” If there’s one person in the world you’d love to cook for, who would that be? “I would really enjoy the experience of cooking for a president or leader of a country.” Any tips for up-and-coming chefs? “Always keep your passion alive, strive to learn as much as you can and push yourself to do better each day. Learning new recipes and cooking techniques is easy and will happen naturally as you work, but if you want to make it in this industry, you need to be mentally strong and focused.” For more information

Inside, the spectacle is equally impressive with glittering chandeliers, spectacular floral motifs adorning the walls and a vast hand-woven Persian carpet in the main prayer hall.

Thembi Kuchena Concierge catches up with the co-founder of VIP shopping service LOLI for her insider insights into life in the emirate

What I love the most about life in Abu Dhabi is the abundance of activities on offer for people with varied tastes. Be it roller coaster rides for the adventurous or quiet moments spent by the beach, there’s so much to see, do and look forward to, especially with the capital’s vibrant shopping scene. I always recommend shopping, shopping and some more shopping to friends and family who visit. Among Abu Dhabi’s many malls, I enjoy Yas Mall. It is one of the biggest retail destinations here and is home to so many luxury brands and department stores, which ensures you’ll always find what you’re looking for. I moved from South Africa to Abu Dhabi in 2012. Although I knew delving into a new culture and new way of life wouldn’t be easy, I was prepared for the challenge. And over time, thanks to the emirate’s quiet and relaxed pace, I found my way. My passion for all things fashion prompted me to start my own company. Last year, together with my colleague Astried Vivero, I founded LOLI, a personal VIP shopping and styling service committed to delivering the most luxurious retail experiences. We collaborate with world-renowned brands and leading international suppliers to style our clients and as a result, we always manage to create red carpetworthy moments for everyone. Aside from shopping, I believe one of the best ways to take in the city’s truly global vibe is dining your way through Abu Dhabi. The emirate is home to some of the best restaurants you’ll find anywhere, from some of the world’s most renowned chefs. You definitely won’t be disappointed with the array of options available, from casual bites in a café to a decadent meal at a five-star hotel. My go-to spot for a memorable dining experience is without doubt Turquoiz at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. The beachside setting at this restaurant is simply stunning and the variety of seafood on offer is absolutely marvellous. It’s a must visit while in town. One of my favourite destinations for some relaxation at the weekend is Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. The hotel’s luxurious Talise Spa is the best I have experienced in Abu Dhabi. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be when I’m looking for a place to put my feet up and truly relax. It is definitely one of the best ways to treat yourself after a hectic week at work.
