Editor’s note Buzzing with a palpable sense of energy, the UAE’s most popular season is now in full swing. From al fresco activities to artistic endeavours, there is plenty to explore and experience. Arts and culture feature prominently in this month’s issue as we take a trip through Sharjah’s ever-evolving art community on page 28. The capital’s acclaimed Abu Dhabi Classics season continues and we showcase the best upcoming performances on page 32. Moving away from art in the traditional sense, our photo essay on page 42 presents a snapshot of Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s budding urban arts scene with a collection of striking street art. As February is often associated with romance there’s plenty to fall in love with in this issue. Diamonds take centre stage as we talk with Graff Diamonds’ CEO Francois Graff on page 56, then on page 66 peruse our selection of swoon-worthy jewellery designs. Once again our edit of designer fashion, beauty and accessories will have you looking suitably chic for any occasion. If you’re looking for tips on where to spend a little one-on-one time with someone special, check out our recommendations for stylish staycations on page 52 and our pick of romantic restaurants and Valentine’s Day packages from page 72 to 77. Art in the city ——
From the 15-year Heart of Sharjah project to the internationally renowned Sharjah Biennial, discover what makes the emirate a rising star on the region's cultural scene While Abu Dhabi may be getting all the art-related headlines these days, thanks to the opening of Louvre Abu Dhabi, the emirate of Sharjah has championed the UAE’s art scene since long before Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District began to take shape. In fact, 2018 marks 20 years since UNESCO named Sharjah the Cultural Capital of the Arab World, and 25 years since Sharjah’s ruler, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, founded the Sharjah Biennial, an international art exposition now overseen by his daughter, Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi. Today, Sharjah is home to a sprawling arts and culture district that encompasses more than just a single gallery. You could spend hours wandering through the arts area with its alleyways, paths and passages, in and out of buildings designed based on the traditional architecture of the region. Every corner turned seems to reveal a new gallery, painting or display to discover, set against the backdrop of sand-coloured walls and windtowers, with modern artists’ studios and contemporary exhibition spaces blending in seamlessly with the emirate's local architecture. Despite traditional appearances, Sharjah is a champion of contemporary artists and more conceptual art, as well as the classics. One of the highlights of the art area is Sharjah Art Museum, which originally opened in 19th century mansion Bait Al Serkal before moving to its

current location in the arts area near Sharjah Corniche. Inaugurated in 1997, it was the Gulf’s first dedicated art museum. Visitors can explore three storeys dedicated to 500 artworks, plus a library that boasts more than 4,000 titles. The permanent collection features paintings and sculptures by some of the Middle East’s most famous artists, including Bashir Sinway, Faiq Hassan, Mohammed Yusuf and Ismail Fatah Al-Turk. Throughout the year, the museum hosts exceptional exhibitions by local and international artists. In 2017 and 2018, this included a retrospective of the late, great Hassan Sharif, a talented Emirati artist, whose signature blend of bright colours and everyday objects woven into abstract shapes, added a vibrant touch to Al Mureijah Square and Bait Al Serkal. Also located in the Sharjah arts area, the Emirates Fine Arts society is a non-profit that dates back to the 1980s – another example of the emirate’s longstanding dedication to preserving and promoting the arts. The organisation, which has close ties with Sharjah Art Museum, was originally conceived as a way to support and showcase local and international talent within the region. One of the ways in which Sharjah has firmly established its place on the global contemporary arts scene is through the Sharjah Biennial. Every two years, some of the best artists and curators in the world flock to the emirate to participate

in this growing cultural expo. Although the next Biennial will not take place until March 2019, the Sharjah Art Foundation has already announced that the 14th edition will be curated by Zoe Butt, artistic director, The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Omar Kholeif, Manilow senior curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; and curator, writer and art historian Claire Tancons. The theme of the Sharjah Biennial 14 is Leaving the Echo Chamber, and three distinctive exhibitions organised by Butt, Kholeif and Tancons will explore the ways in which modern technology has created an inescapable ‘echo chamber’ of information, networks and shifting. For those who can’t wait until 2019, Sharjah Art Foundation also organises an annual event called the March Meeting, which explores the importance of Arab Art on the global stage, based on a specific theme and invites writers, artists, filmmakers, creators and more to take part. This year’s MM 2018 will explore the theme of resistance and its relationship with artistic expression. sharjahart.org

Abu Dhabi Classics continues to delight classical music enthusiasts with a line-up of soul-stirring performances
A poignant strain from a familiar symphony fills the air and a sense of anticipation runs through the crowd. The serene surrounds of the Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain are transformed, as the historic structure plays host to a magical evening celebrating music, and Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, flawlessly performed by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, sets the tone for a season of classical music to remember. It was a brilliant performance, one that saw the seventh edition of Abu Dhabi Classics welcomed with thunderous applause back in October 2017. Led by conductor James Gaffigan and pianist Nicholas Angelich, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, one of Europe’s most celebrated ensembles, mesmerised audiences with a series of compositions that paid tribute to one of the most significant eras of Western classical music: the Romantic era. The year was 1806 when a young Beethoven found himself in dire straits amidst deteriorating hearing and a complicated love affair. His despair found expression in a series of soul-stirring rhythms that deflected from the formal and predictable style of classical music. It set in motion a new age of harmony, the Romantic era, when music became more dramatic, expressive and emotional. Given that the juxtaposition between classical and romantic styles remains a dominant force in the industry, it seemed apt to kickstart the season with popular compositions by pioneers of the genre: Edvard Grieg, Robert Schumann, Richard Wagner and, of course, Ludwig van Beethoven. Since its inaugural edition, Abu Dhabi Classics has delivered an immersive experience year after year, bringing the finest talents in the field to a host of
venues across the emirate. Past seasons have seen world-renowned ensembles including the New York Philharmonic, Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and London’s BBC Concert Orchestra grace the stage with inspiring performances. Earlier this season, the Trombone Trio made their first ever appearance in the emirate with a spectacular performance titled Where Art Meets Music. Brothers Nico and Martin Schippers and Bart Claessens of the trio were joined by pianist Jeroen Bal to deliver masterful renditions of popular pieces by composers Modest Mussorgsky, Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms. The Staatskapelle Dresden, one of the world’s oldest orchestras, together with pianist Rudolf Buchbinder, presented Viennese classical music at Emirates Palace. Classical music fans can also look forward to two performances by Chopin competition gold medalist Seong-Jin Cho’s piano recital this month. The South Korean star has curated an inspired programme with a series of Beethoven’s sonatas followed by pieces from Debussy and Chopin. His first show will be at the Arts Centre at NYU Abu Dhabi and the second will be in the dramatic desert setting of Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara. Drawing the seventh season to a close, the Donetsk Opera and Ballet Theatre will perform at Emirates Palace in April. Bolshoi Theatre dancers Ivan Vasiliev and Ekaterina Krisyanova will be joined by the Emirati ballerina, Alia Al Neyadi, to perform the classical heritage ballet Le Corsaire. Choreographed by ballet legend Yuri Grigorovich, this remarkable finale is definitely not to be missed. For more information,

/ Abu Dhabi Corniche
On the capital’s sunny shores, beautiful beaches are a dime a dozen, but the Corniche remains one of Abu Dhabi’s most popular spots. For one, the coral blue waters and golden sands fringed by swaying palm trees make you feel like you’re on a tropical island. Secondly, this spectacular beachfront boasts the highly-coveted Blue Flag status, the internationally recognised symbol for safe beaches, for carefree fun in the sun. And to add to the convenience of sunseekers, the two-kilometre coast is divided into separate zones for groups and families with children. On a weekday, it is easy to find a quiet spot under a large umbrella, if it’s relaxation you’re after. And when you’re up for a dip, the idyllic ocean waters are warm and shallow, with a gentle surf . Don’t forget to sample the food at the various beachside haunts along the Corniche. Serving up a wide range of international cuisines, from fresh seafood to local favourites, there’s something to suit every palette and budget.

/ Kite Beach
The playground of choice for adventurous types, few beaches in Dubai come close to the pristine setting of Kite Beach. A haven of sorts for surfers and paddle boarders, the spot attracts both beginners and advanced enthusiasts who live for the adrenaline. There’s never a dull moment on Kite Beach, even if all you’re looking for is to spend a few hours admiring the views before you. Watch in amazement as professional surfers ride the waves and the horizon becomes dotted with colourful kites soaring in the distance, or join in the fun. Completing the piercing blue panorama is Dubai’s magnificent skyline in the distance, which includes the sail-like structure of Burj Al Arab Jumeirah. Quirky cafés and plenty of food trucks along the shore ensure you never leave feeling peckish.

/ JBR Beach
Golden sands and turquoise blue waters aside, the sprawling beach at JBR has plenty on offer to appeal to every kind of beach lover. And it comes as no surprise that this popular stretch of sand remains a firm favourite among residents and tourists alike. While the waters are fairly calm, the shore is constantly buzzing with activity. And to truly appreciate what this spectacular spot has to offer, we recommend trying a little bit of everything. Dip your toes in the waters of the Gulf on a sunny afternoon, idle the hours away on the shore soaking up that warm Dubai sunshine, get your thrill fix with a variety of watersports including parasailing and wakeboarding, sign up for camel rides on the sand, shop for fashionable finds at local booths or tuck into the eclectic selection of fare on offer across the many cafĂŠs and restaurants along the shore. Furthermore, the strip plays host to local artists entertaining the crowd with live painting shows, photography displays, stand-up comedy and live music.

/ Ajman Corniche
A secluded beach is generally hard to come by in the UAE but for sun worshippers seeking a relatively uncrowded stretch of sand, Ajman’s gorgeous Corniche certainly fits the bill. Situated on the UAE’s north-western shores, the coastal attraction is defined by postcard-perfect white sand and crystal blue waters. Beachgoers can easily spend the entire day doing nothing but alternating between sunbathing and taking leisurely dips in the warm, inviting waters. On a lazy weekend in the emirate, it’s not uncommon to find local families enjoying a picnic on the sunny shores or getting ready to fire up a barbecue for a seaside feast. But when the sun sets, this sleepy stretch becomes a hub of social activity, thanks to the many cafés and restaurants dotted along four kilometres of coast serving everything from street food to gourmet world flavours.

Looking ahead Beach lovers in the capital now have one more reason to rejoice. Miral, the UAE's renowned destination management group, recently revealed plans to develop a new beachfront community in Abu Dhabi. The A'L Bahar project is set to grace the emirate’s vibrant Corniche, covering 80,000 square metres of space and offering multiple options to relax, dine and shop. Due to open before March 2018, visitors can look forward to a host of fun-filled experiences for the whole family with basketball courts, soccer pitches and an outdoor gym, as well as a play area for junior beachgoers.

AL RAHA BEACH, ABU DHABI This impressive 600-metre mural runs parallel to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street. Commissioned by Aldar Properties, the collection of work pays homage to the UAE's heritage and unique Bedouin traditions.
Created by Dominican-born figurative painter and street artist, Elio Mercado and his team took five weeks to complete the series of paintings – during which they battled soaring temperatures, high humidity and sand storms. Each painting depicts an iconic cultural scene or pastime, such as Emirati women weaving palm fronds, the serving of Arabic coffee and a young boy walking a camel.

The great escape ——
For romance with a difference, let Platinum Heritage take you deep into the region’s awe-inspiring desert
Love is in the air
Once a Bedouin heartland, the region’s sprawling desert lands offer ample occasion for exploration and one of our favourite ways to take it all in is from way, way up high. A hot air balloon ride is an unforgettably romantic experience and the best vantage point to really grasp the sheer scale and magnitude of this vast landscape. Rise with the sun and marvel as its rays slowly illuminate the great swathes of desert below. With the desert and Hajar Mountains serving as a picture-perfect backdrop, this really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, not to mention an incredibly photo-worthy setting. Balloon Adventures Dubai presents a range of packages. You can opt for an intimate experience for two or even embark on a flight accompanied by the world's fastest bird, a Peregrine falcon. Falconry holds a special place in UAE heritage and for those eager to learn more about these impressive creatures, the day flight with a falcon is ideal. This rare experience, which is only offered by Balloon Adventures Dubai, allows guests to witness falcons in full flight as they are trained to soar alongside the hot air balloon. The excitement, however, doesn’t end there, as once the balloon has returned gently back to land you’ll then hop into a 1950’s Land Rover and career over sand dunes to a desert safari camp. Guests will then feast upon a delicious breakfast spread of smoked salmon, eggs Benedict, caviar, fresh fruit and hot beverages all for AED1,195 per person. Alternatively, create a truly unique experience using one of Balloon Adventures Dubai’s smaller balloons, perfect for couples. Depending on the time of year, these flights can be booked for sunrise or sunset, followed by a private breakfast or dinner in the desert with prices starting from AED16,275 for a personalised package. Then, for Valentine's Day, Balloon Adventures Dubai is offering a special flight, inclusive of an early morning, private pick up and leisurely sunrise flight, followed by a gourmet breakfast with sparkling date juice served in a private desert cabana for AED1,695 per person. ballooning.ae

Romancing the stone ——
Graff Diamonds CEO, Francois Graff, talks us through the jewellery brand’s designs, craftsmanship and the acquisition of some of its most prestigious stones Boasting a glittering assortment of record-breaking diamonds and an impressive portfolio championing some of the world’s most extravagant and meticulously designed jewellery, Graff Diamonds is undoubtedly among the industry’s most pioneering brands. “The way we run our company is quite different from other jewellery businesses,” explains Francois Graff, current CEO and son of Graff Diamonds’ founder Laurence Graff. “We are a completely vertically integrated company, in control of the production of our own stones, thanks to our global cutting and polishing facilities, where we cut and polish 20,000 carats of diamonds per month. This allows us to dictate what we make, according to the beautiful stones that we have. “Inspired by the natural beauty of each diamond or coloured gemstone, our design team creates pieces that complement each stone. The inspiration for our jewellery is varied. We have many motifs borrowed from nature, animals and flowers, as well as architectural and historical motifs. Once the designs are finalised, the master craftsmen in our London atelier are given both the design and the raw materials in order to bring these pieces to life, using a combination of age-old artisanal techniques and pioneering technology.” Of course it’s no easy to task to balance an avant-garde attitude while still maintaining the brand’s core heritage. Yet Graff insists his team of designers are extremely talented at this particular juggling act. “We have an extensive archive that they frequently draw upon, but they also have some of the world’s best technology at their fingertips. This allows their imaginations to run wild. Coupled with the peerless expertise of our expert craftsmen, it’s a marriage of old and new that allows us to create timeless jewels with a classic allure, while always pushing the boundaries of innovation.”

“We have had some of the most important diamonds in existence on our roll call” Driven by Laurence Graff’s intense passion for diamonds, the jewellery brand has built an incredible legacy in just under six decades. Having started his first company at the tender age of 18, Laurence Graff has always had an unabashed flair for extravagance. A notable example of this can be traced back to his early days when he convinced a diamonds dealer to advance him 33 small diamonds for just £60. He recalls, “Instead of making 33 individual rings, I placed them all on one ring, creating a big flash of diamonds. I sold the ring to a jeweller in the north of England, who called me immediately after my return to London to say he had sold the ring and wanted to order another.” It’s clear this proclivity for dramatic design and commitment to sourcing the highest quality stones is shared by Francois Graff, as he proudly explains, “We are known as a limitless company, as we have had some of the most important diamonds in existence on our roll call and we’ve never been afraid to create the most exceptional jewellery pieces in the world. Last year was a particularly special year, as we acquired four incredibly important diamonds. The 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona, the largest rough diamond in the world, the Meya Prosperity diamond (476 carats) and the Peace diamond (709 carats), plus a further 373-carat stone, reaffirmed our reputation as a world leader in extraordinary diamonds.” Graff goes on to add that the Middle East certainly has a penchant for this level of luxury. “The appetite and appreciation of our Middle Eastern clients for unique and extraordinary pieces is highly developed. Historically, the Middle East market has always been important as they have a deep understanding of quality and rarity. Jewellery is very much part of the culture. I think one of the main idiosyncrasies of our Middle East clientele is that our customers here often request suites, or sets, of jewellery featuring the same design.”
Along with a presence in Abu Dhabi and Oman, Dubai in particular is an important city for Graff Diamonds. “Dubai is one of the few cities around the globe that is still remarkably exciting and dynamic - it’s a place with a huge amount of energy. “Although we don’t design specifically for individual markets, as the pieces we manufacture are sold all over the world, we have created a series of GyroGraff World watches featuring Middle Eastern métiers d’art dials. These depict miniature maps of the region, showcasing remarkable detail and beautiful artisanal craftsmanship.” As you’d expect for a brand of this magnitude, every element of the customer process is executed to deliver an all-encompassing experience. “Visiting any of our stores – we now have almost 60 worldwide – is a very special experience,” explains Graff. “They are designed to create a luxurious universe that is fitting for the most fabulous jewels in the world. At a design level, each of the stores is considered within the context of its region, in order to create an environment that reverently references local heritage and culture while remaining suitably opulent. Our Burj Al Arab boutique, for example, features ebony furniture, bronze detailing, striking high gloss marble and crystal chandeliers. We want our clients to walk into each store and feel instantly immersed in a luxurious world – surrounded by the finest interiors and the most beautiful jewels.” It is in grand boutiques such as this that jewellery aficionados are invited to peruse some of the creations crafted from the impressive collection of stones discovered in 2017. Graff adds, “Acquiring rare diamonds and coloured gemstones has always been, and will continue to be, a key part of our business. In the coming months, we will begin to unveil the stones cut and polished from these remarkable rough diamonds, revealing some of the most phenomenal diamonds the world has ever seen.” The Dubai Mall

Harking back to its Californian roots, Eat & Meat, located on the lobby floor of The H Dubai, brings back the glamour of the Roaring Twenties with its Hollywood Brunch each Friday. Formerly known as Delphine Restaurant, the venue itself oozes plenty of old-school charm with its elegant décor – think plush armchairs, wooden flooring and dark marble walls. A resident of the brunch scene, over the years the Holly Brunch has become a firm favourite with those after a relaxed yet sophisticated family affair. Expect a well-edited buffet spread packed with fresh, flavoursome dishes, a great choice of à la carte options, spot on service (complete with fancy dress) and live entertainment including sensational Sinatra and Michael Bublé renditions. Oh and there’s also an after party at H Bar with discounted drinks. Here chef Gulati, who has been with the hotel since 2012, tells us more ...
Tell us about your background and what in s pired you to become a chef? “After finishing my International Hotel degree in India, over the years I have worked my way up the kitchen ranks in a variety of international hotel and travel brands including Le Méridien, Hilton Hotels Worldwide and Qatar Airways. I love the opportunity that the kitchen gives me to innovate and I see it as a test lab where every day I can create something unique and different.”
“We also have the High Tea – a miniature version of the classic afternoon tea” 4
What have been some of your recent career highlights? “Last year I spearheaded the creation of a new café at The H Dubai, Urban on 4. The concept has become so successful that, not only have we increased our revenues, but we’ve also opened more branches to include a presence in Abu Dhabi and there are more due to open in Dubai this year.” Can you tell us about the behind-the-scenes preparation ahead of each Friday brunch? The planning of the menu starts one week in advance. I have a team that gets together and we try to come up with new techniques and perfect existing ones. There are 14 chefs involved in the process, along with three sous-chef who are working behind the scenes. It is important for us to maintain a consistent quality each week whilst being innovative. Our breakfast service runs until 11am on Fridays so we have just a short time to turn the buffet around and create an amazing experience for our brunch guests.
In comparison to other brunches, what makes the Hollywood Brunch at Eat & Meat unique? “I think it’s the casual yet attentive service, the ambience and the live entertainment provided by a singer who offers fantastic entertainment. Since it’s a 1920’s theme, guests can enjoy dressing up from one of the most glamorous eras and they can dine on a generous selection of beverages and expertly crafted cocktails. Of course, one of the most appealing factors is the food! As we have a buffet and an à la carte option, guests can choose from an unlimited selection of weekly changing dishes, served straight to the table, as well as a buffet of fresh salads, hot dishes, an impressive cheese board, a charcuterie station and a wide variety of seafood. And the dessert buffet is also really something special.” Can you tell us more about the menu and how it complements the theme? The menu focus is very much on fresh products. We’ve tested many different dishes and we know which ones our guests love so we try to keep these on the menu whilst adding new ones on a weekly basis. Some of our popular dishes include the braised beef ribs, fish in a bag and wagyu sliders. Regarding the theme, our buffet offers a wide choice of seafood, something which was particularly popular in the 1920’s and our dessert section is brimming with classic sweet treats, like cupcakes and crème brûlée, all set up to look like a vintage postcard. We also have the High Tea – a miniature version of the classic afternoon tea – another popular 1920’s indulgence. 04 5018623 or

Food and romance are inextricably linked. We’re told that the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach; we debate the aphrodisiac powers of oysters and Champagne; we spend our dirhams on heart-shaped chocolates, as much a part of Valentine’s Day as a candy-coloured card. With all of that in mind, what better way to celebrate a day of romance than with a meal for two? For those in search of a worthy destination for Valentine’s Day, Rare is the perfect choice. The elegant steakhouse in Desert Palm Dubai feels like a world away from the buzz of the lively city centre. Located on Ras Al Khor road, the urban oasis is set amidst a 160-acre polo estate. Driving to the property along the winding, tree-lined roads makes us feel increasingly secluded before we finally arrive in front of the luxury façade. Desert Palm Dubai's rolling acres of manicured fields and palm-tree lined walkways are instantly soothing to the senses, making it feel like a lush green hideaway in the midst of a lively city. To make the most of Rare, book a table on the spacious terrace and make sure you get there before sunset to enjoy the incredible views. Our table looked directly over the lush green fields, and offered beautiful vistas of the city skyline, with the distinctive outline of Burj Khalifa twinkling in the distance.
Beef tartare

The restaurant is sophisticated yet understated, with warm colours and dark wood furnishings, free from any elaborate flashiness that could ruin an intimate meal. From the moment we are seated, the service is warm and helpful, yet unobtrusive. Rare’s staff know their stuff when it comes to everything from choosing a wine pairing to explaining some of the menu’s more elaborate dishes. Dinner begins with an amuse-bouche to get our tastebuds going. A spicy, warm-out-of-the-oven bread is brought to the table. The flavourful dough is spiked with melting cheese, and the richness of both is complemented by the fresh and zesty pineapple salsa that accompanies it. As though that wasn’t enough, this is followed by freshly baked brioche with a tasty olive tapenade. When it comes to culinary influences, the menu at Rare has something to suit all tastes, from fresh, South American-inspired ceviche to Mediterranean dishes such as braised baby octopus and veal carpaccio. We begin with the beef tartare, which comes from Rangers Valley, a region of Australia known for producing exceptional wagyu and Black Onyx beef. The meat is tender and full of flavour, perfectly offset with a tangy dressing of herbs and capers, preserved lemon and a good amount of heat from jalapeño peppers. Another highlight from the appetisers menu is the divers scallops. Impeccably cooked, with none of the rubberiness that can affect

Meet the chef Stefan Beutler, Executive Chef at Rare
“At Desert Palm Dubai we offer something a bit different - we are unique, yet understated, and this really appeals to guests. Even though we’re just 15 minutes from Downtown Dubai, it feels like a real escape. The polo estate gives a verdant backdrop with a unique view of the Dubai Skyline, and the overall feeling is like being at a country club – relaxed yet chic. My food philosophy at Rare is to keep things fresh, simple and maintain the highest quality,
this delicate dish, the scallops are tender on the inside with a nice char on the outside, served with a delicious leek purée that makes the most of the vegetable’s charred sweetness. Choosing a single main course from the menu is almost impossible given the wealth of options: alongside the entrées, there’s also a Fire & Iron menu that showcases the chefs’ grilling skills – think big, juicy tiger prawns in a Brazilian vinaigrette or juicy Peruvian chicken skewers with a herb dressing. However, being as Rare is renowned for its beef, it’s only right that we choose from the extensive steak menu. A Black Onyx beef tenderloin – grain fed and dry-aged for 300 days – is served perfectly cooked. Another import from the esteemed Rangers Valley, the well-marbled steak has plenty of flavour and the knife cuts through the tender meat like butter. For a delicious alternative to the beef, try the Canadian rack of lamb, which is accompanied by roasted vegetables and crushed sweet potatoes. There are plenty of side dishes to choose from, but we recommend the sautéed spinach if you’re feeling virtuous, or the gratin dauphinois if calories are the last thing on your mind. The latter is a menu highlight, the perfect combination of crisp potato, gooey cheese and cream, served in a modest portion that won’t overwhelm the meal. The potato puree with truffle oil is another, equally decadent option. No romantic meal would be complete without dessert, and Rare excels in this department too. For the classic chocolate treat, opt for the dacquoise chocolate creameux - layers of crisp biscuit, rich chocolate and lemon cream, drizzled with an addictively sweet salted caramel sauce. Alternatively, Rare’s take on the classic vanilla crème brûlée is a worthy alternative. Sweet and milky, the creamy dessert forgoes the classic sugar crust topping, and instead uses caramelised pecans to add crunch. It’s the perfect treat to linger over as your romantic evening draws to a close.
Vanilla crème brûlée

always getting our ingredients from reliable sources. It’s also always exciting bringing new products to our guests. If I had to choose a dish to recommend, it would be the rack of lamb. It’s a prime product from Canada and a very flavourful cut of meat, served with seasonal sweet potato mash. The flavours are intense but not overpowering.“

Thembi Kuchena Concierge catches up with the co-founder of the capital's top VIP shopping service LOLI for her insider insights into life and style in Abu Dhabi
What I love the most about life in Abu Dhabi is the abundance of activities on offer for people with varied tastes. Be it roller coaster rides for the adventurous or quiet moments spent by the beach, there’s so much to see, do and look forward to, especially with the capital’s vibrant shopping scene. I always recommend shopping, shopping and some more shopping to friends and family who visit. Among Abu Dhabi’s many malls, I enjoy Yas Mall. It is one of the biggest retail destinations here and is home to so many luxury brands and department stores, which ensures you’ll always find what you’re looking for. I moved from South Africa to Abu Dhabi in 2012. Although I knew delving into a new culture and new way of life wouldn’t be easy, I was prepared for the challenge. And over time, thanks to the emirate’s quiet and relaxed pace, I found my way. My passion for all things fashion prompted me to start my own company. Last year, together with my colleague Astried Vivero, I founded LOLI, a new personal VIP shopping and styling service committed to delivering the most luxurious retail experiences to be had in the capital. We collaborate with world-renowned brands and leading international suppliers to style our clients and as a result, we always manage to create red carpet-worthy moments for everyone. Aside from shopping, I believe one of the best ways to take in the city’s truly global vibe is dining your way through Abu Dhabi. The emirate is home to some of the best restaurants you’ll find anywhere, from some of the world’s most renowned chefs. You definitely won’t be disappointed with the array of options available, from casual bites in a café to a decadent meal at a five-star hotel. My go-to spot for a memorable dining experience is without doubt Turquoiz at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. The beachside setting at this restaurant is simply stunning and the variety of seafood on offer is absolutely marvellous. It’s a must visit while in town. One of my favourite destinations for some relaxation at the weekend is Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. The hotel’s luxurious Talise Spa is the best I have experienced in Abu Dhabi. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be when I’m looking for a place to put my feet up and truly relax. It is definitely one of the best ways to treat yourself after a hectic week at work.
