Editor’s note Welcome to our sizzling summer issue. Although temperatures around the region continue to rise, and a slightly slower pace can be felt across the city, the emirates still offer plenty to explore and experience. From contemporary works of art to classic cars, the UAE is home to a host of cultural destinations. Discover some of these must-visit attractions on page 26. With this being the ideal season to revel in a little relaxation, on page 34 we present a round-up of signature treatments at luxury spas across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. We continue this focus on indulgence with our top pick of staycations. From island paradises to desert retreats, turn to page 40 to discover more. If the sporting spirit that’s currently sweeping the nation, however, has you seeking out something a bit more active, we’ve got just the thing on page 46 as this month’s photo essay showcases a thrilling line-up of water activities. Dubai Summer Surprises kicked off recently and if you’re looking for inspiration, our shop section is brimming with the latest designer buys and exclusive accessories. We shine a spotlight on Swiss watchmaker Jaquet Droz on page 54 as we chat to CEO, Christian Lattman, about the brand’s distinct craftsmanship and the new flagship boutique at The Dubai Mall. A mix of boho chic and sharp tailoring is then the focus of our men and women’s style guide from page 58, while on page 64 we point you in the direction of the city’s best malls. Giving us an insight into what makes The Chef’s Palette cooking class at Fairmont The Palm unique, we sit down with its new culinary star Romain Van Durmen. Read all about it on page 70. Then, proving that the key to a perfect meal is fresh produce and a refined touch, we review DIFC hotspot Cipriani Dubai on page 72. Past and present ——
The summer months are the perfect time to immerse yourself in the UAE’s wealth of cultural sites, many of which are dedicated to preserving its heritage
Since the rule of the late founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE has always placed great importance on preserving its traditions, even as it looked towards the future. Today, the emirates are home to some incredible museums, art galleries and heritage areas, with even more on the way. Through vast collections of historic art and artefacts, visitors can immerse themselves in the relics of a bygone era, joining the dots to better understand the UAE’s journey from a Bedouin settlement to global metropolis. When Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in Saadiyat Cultural District in November 2017, it changed the cultural (and literal) landscape of the UAE forever. From its iconic dome inspired by the region’s traditional palm frond roofs to its collection of 600 artworks and historic relics, it is one of the Middle East’s must-visit attractions. The collection is displayed across 23 galleries in 12 sequences, organised in chronological order to highlight the similarities and parallels between different cultures. The artefacts are truly awe-inspiring, from ancient Egyptian pharaohs to historical figurines that date back as early as 3,000 BCE. Art-lovers are sure to marvel at the paintings by legendary masters such as Warhol, Whistler, Da Vinci and Van Gogh. In addition, the display of original religious texts is extraordinary – highlights include items from Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism and Judaism – as well as being an astonishing show of diversity and tolerance. Abu Dhabi is also home to several smaller museums with their own unique charms. Al Ain Palace Museum, located on the edge of the Al Ain Oasis, was once the residence of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his family, and today, provides a fascinating insight into times gone by. The many displays aim to educate visitors about Bedouin history. Perhaps one of the capital’s quirkiest is the Emirates National Auto Museum. Located around 45 kilometres south of the city, it seems to rise like a mirage out of the desert and is home to around 200 cars, the private collection of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan. An essential visit for any motoring enthusiast, some of the cars have even featured on the British show Top Gear. Other highlights include the world’s largest pickup truck and the sheikh’s flamboyant rainbow Mercedes Benz collection.
Side note
Saadiyat Cultural District is also set to become the home of the long-awaited Guggenheim Abu Dhabi as well as Zayed National Museum. The latter is a memorial to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE.

One of the newest additions to the region’s cultural scene is Etihad Museum. It is built, literally and figuratively, on the foundations of the UAE, right next to Union House in Jumeirah, where the signing of the treaty that united the emirates took place in 1971. The architecture mimics the shape of a manuscript, with seven columns built into the museum as symbols of the pens that were used to sign the declaration. Covering 2.5 hectares, it is divided into eight pavilions that together tell the story of the UAE’s history, with extra emphasis on the period between 1968 and 1974. With its streamlined architecture and futuristic displays, Etihad Museum is one of the best places in the region to learn about the UAE’s constitution, and the rights, privileges and responsibilities that it bestows upon its people. Some of the highlights include local art, memorabilia donated by former and current UAE royalty, and a pavilion dedicated to the UAE constitution, which includes the original declaration document. While Dubai Museum, also known as Al Fahidi Fort, is not as futuristic as Etihad Museum, it is still teeming with visitors most weekends, and with good reason. Located on the south side of Dubai Creek, this historical site uses life-sized dioramas to depict the long-forgotten traditions of a pre-oil era Dubai, from traditional houses to pearl diving and desert landscapes. Also worth a visit is the nearby Dubai Coffee Museum. In the Arab world coffee is more than just a hot beverage. It is associated with hospitality, socialising and the exchange of ideas, so it’s fitting that the UAE has its own museum dedicated to it. Located in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, it’s a fascinating destination for anyone with even a passing interest in the history of this humble drink. Owned by Khalid Al Mulla, the collection of coffee-related memorabilia is truly mind-boggling – highlights include 18th-century textbooks, centuries-old coffee pots from Egypt, Ethiopia and Yemen, and coffee grinders that date back to World War I. Be sure to visit the museum’s own café for a freshly brewed cup.
It traces the history of moving images, from prehistoric cave drawings to shadow puppets
Like the Dubai Coffee Museum, the Dubai Moving Image Museum is a hidden gem, tucked away in Barsha Heights among the high rise buildings. Unlike the majority of UAE museums, which focus on the development of the region, it traces the history of moving images, from prehistoric cave drawings to shadow puppets and the evolution of cinema. Located in the MCN Hive Building, the museum houses the private collection of MCM chairman Akram Miknas, who has amassed an incredible array of memorabilia over more than 25 years, hoping to inspire visitors with his enthusiasm for the art. Some items date back as early as the 1730s, and the display includes an 18th-century Dutch peep box viewer and a 20th-century mutoscope.
Side note
In 2019, Dubai will welcome the Museum of the Future. Currently under construction, the immense structure is set to function as ‘an incubator for new ideas’, and a facilitator for futuristic innovation and design. It will be the largest of its kind in the world, building on five years of temporary exhibitions held at the World Government Summit.

Sharjah was named the Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998, and is well worth a visit. The emirate is known for championing the preservation of its customs and traditions, and boasts a wealth of historical attractions, many of which are located in its heritage area, the Heart of Sharjah. Among these is the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, home to an incredible display of more than 5,000 objects of historical significance to Islam. These revolve around not only religion but discoveries in science, literature and technology. Just a short stroll away is Sharjah Art Museum, one of the UAE’s best-loved cultural destinations, which boasts more than 500 artworks. The permanent collection of paintings by local artists traces the history of the region, and the museum also hosts a number of temporary exhibitions showcasing regional and international artists throughout the year. It’s a must-visit during the Sharjah Biennial, a world-class celebration of contemporary art that takes place once every two years (the next edition is scheduled for 2019).

It’s showtime ———
Dubai Opera welcomes a new season of entertainment with a line-up of theatre productions, musical artists and stand-up stars
Swan Lake performed by the Houston Ballet
When Dubai Opera first opened its doors in the summer of 2016, all eyes were on this new realm of entertainment in the region, with the king of opera, Plácido Domingo himself, gracing the stage. Now, almost two years later, having wrapped up several iconic shows including Mary Poppins, Les Misèrables and Romeo & Juliet, Dubai Opera has carved a niche for itself as a hub for arts and culture in the Middle East. “We’ve staged over 200 shows featuring over 2,000 artists for a live audience of over 200,000,” says Jasper Hope. “But we always have the next event to look forward to.” Everyone’s attention is now turned to the new season of shows lined up at Dubai Opera in the months ahead including Georges Bizet’s Carmen in September as well as Ghost - The Musical and Swan Lake by the Houston Ballet in October. But, legendary productions aside, Dubai Opera promises a lot more in the months ahead. Earlier this year, 90’s pop sensation Steps took to the stage for a musical extravaganza. And the
line-up of pop artists doesn’t stop there. Fans can look forward to live music concerts featuring popular Arab artist Assala, folk singer Suzanne Vega and Irish singer Imelda May. But that’s not all! Stand-up comedy fans can also expect some side-splitting entertainment at the venue with performances by celebrated artists Al Murray, Omar Hamdi, Esther Manito, Prince Abdi and Karim Duval. While it might seem like the venue is deviating from its traditional format of entertainment, Hope argues: “Dubai Opera was always intended to be a multi-purpose venue offering the best from a wide variety of genres. We vary our programme frequently so as to appeal to as many different interests as possible. It doesn’t mean we don’t have opera, ballet and classical music as

a key part of our programme each year – we do – it just means that we can think broader than that.” So, when it comes to marking our social calendars, Hope promises there’s something for everyone. Being the man behind the scenes is certainly no easy feat, as Hope points out. “It takes a lot of hard work, while also being surrounded by a great team working just as hard.” But the role does come with its perks. Talking about his favourite opera moment, he says: “It’s difficult to beat the opening night. Welcoming His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and introducing him to Plácido Domingo is a moment I shall treasure forever.” As for the future, his sights are set high. All he leaves us with is: “If you happen to come across Adele’s number, please pass it on.” Dubai Opera

Sweet emotion ——
Concierge chats with Jaquet Droz CEO Christian Lattmann about pieces that stir the senses and the brand’s new flagship boutique
When Christian Lattmann showed off the timepiece on his wrist at the opening of Jaquet Droz’s new flagship boutique in The Dubai Mall, it was met with audible gasps of delight. The brand’s CEO had chosen to wear the flamboyant Tropical Bird Repeater, one of the maison’s most exclusive watches, which is limited to just eight pieces. The product of three years’ work by five artists, the timepiece features Jaquet Droz’s signature automata. The watch mechanism cleverly animates a tropical jungle scene – a hummingbird flaps its wings, fern leaves rustle and a peacock spreads its tail feathers to reveal a jungle cat. Pleased with the reaction to his timepiece, Lattmann notes that provoking such an emotional response is a key part of the Swiss brand’s identity. “It’s this idea of astonishment, which is something that you experience frequently as a child but rarely as an adult. This wholly pure emotion, full of delight – that is what we are trying to give to our customers.” Astonishment comes with a luxury price tag. For example, the Tropical Bird Repeater on Lattmann’s wrist is valued at around 680,000 Swiss francs, or just over AED2 million. It truly is an exceptional timepiece. “There is a customer for this sort of watch; people will always want something unique and special,” Lattmann notes. Indeed, Jaquet Droz is known for its delightful and unique automata, which date back to the brand’s early days and its founder Pierre Jaquet Droz. The 18th-century watchmaker was famous for inventing his self-operating automata, which took the form of animated figurines before these mechanisms were incorporated into watch designs.

The uniqueness of Jaquet Droz timepieces, which are renowned for their artistry, their intricacy, and sometimes their flamboyance, is part of why the brand has such a loyal following. “People don’t always know much about Jaquet Droz,” admits Lattman. “But once they discover it for the first time, they really fall in love with it. I like to say that a love of Jaquet Droz is a sign that someone is confident in their personal tastes.” Jaquet Droz is perhaps not as much of a household name as some of its peers in the luxury watch world, and in spite of its illustrious 280-year history, the Swiss brand has been something of a sleeping giant in recent years. Now however, all of that is set to change. Lattmann explains: “Everything seems to be aligning for us perfectly this year as we celebrate our 280th anniversary, as well as our boutique opening in The Dubai Mall. It is important for us to have a presence in the Middle East, and the GCC in particular. It is one of the few places in the world where there is a genuine audience for our unique, high-end timepieces. “People here enjoy spending their wealth on special items. We have really been pushing the envelope on our creative collections, and I’m excited to showcase them here. The brand is the strongest that it has ever been.” This is perfectly encapsulated by the Parrot Repeater Pocket Watch, a unique timepiece created to mark the 280th anniversary of the brand and unveiled at Baselworld 2018. An incredible piece embodying centuries of watchmaking know-how, the pocket watch was made under a shroud of the utmost secrecy, with just eight artists involved in the process.
“It’s the only one of its kind in the world,” marvels Lattmann. “It’s worth an estimated one million Swiss francs, or AED4 million.” The Parrot Repeater Pocket Watch showcases the intricate decorative techniques that the maison is known for, including engraving, sculpting and miniature enamel painting, all done by hand. Precious stones abound, including sapphires, diamonds and emeralds of varying colours, with a mother-of-pearl dial. The automaton mechanism is of course central to the design, and animates a nature scene in which a tiger drinks from a waterfall and two colourful macaws watch an egg hatch and a baby bird emerge. “Birds are a common motif in Jaquet Droz timepieces because our founder loved birds and was so inspired by nature. We wanted a piece that would fully encompass our brand’s story,” Lattmann says. Nature motifs also feature often in the brand’s customisation programme called the Philosophy of the Unique, which invites customers to design their own bespoke dials for their watches. This can range from hand-painted enamel illustrations to intricate automaton mechanisms. “The demand for our customisation service has really risen sharply in the last few years,” Lattmann muses. “I think it will do well in Dubai because the people of the UAE are all about luxury, and wanting the best of the best. We are excited to be offering this service from our new Dubai boutique.” Discover more at the Rivoli boutique in Mall of the Emirates Rivoli Prestige at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island

Malls with it all ——
Dubai Summer Surprises returns to the emirate for its 21st edition
It’s no secret that Dubai’s shopping scene is one of the best in the world, with extravagant, even record-breaking malls that offer every fashion brand under the sun. Now is the perfect time to explore all that the emirate’s shopping malls have to offer, thanks to the return of Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS). Running until August 4, the annual shopping extravaganza features significant discounts at stores across the city, along with special daily deals, activities, competitions and more. Plus, with extended opening hours at the weekends, there is plenty of time to get your shopping fix. Make the most of DSS with our guide to four of Dubai’s must-visit malls.
The Dubai Mall
Located in the heart of the ever-stylish Downtown Dubai, The Dubai Mall is so much more than just a place to shop – it’s a tourist destination in its own right. One of the largest malls in the world, it boasts more than 1,200 stores and is home to some of the best retail, dining and entertainment options in the UAE. From the mesmerising Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo to the nearby spectacle of The Dubai Fountain, not to mention the neighbouring record-breaker, Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall is a must-visit. Recently, the mall has expanded even further with the opening of the impossibly chic Fashion Avenue, a high-end haven of luxury labels including Hermès, Cartier, Gucci and Saint Laurent, as well as long-awaited boutiques from the likes of Monica Vinader and Missoni. It is also home to the largest Rolex boutique in the world, surpassing the record previously set by China, and its three floors are a must-see destination for horology enthusiasts. The stunning boutique, which was inaugurated by Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons earlier this year, features three levels of luxury horology spanning 850 square metres, including a screening room, exhibition area and visitors’ lounge. thedubaimall.com
Dubai Festival City
Dubai Festival City has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and today it is one of the emirate’s best-loved shopping destinations. A big part of that draw is Robinsons, Dubai’s biggest department store, boasting three floors of luxury fashion, beauty and homeware. There are more than 500 brands to shop, of which more than 100 are exclusive to Robinsons, including the beloved British retailer John Lewis. For added wow factor, Dubai Festival City even has its own fountain show, IMAGINE, a multisensory experience that features water, pyrotechnics, lasers and lights. dubaifestivalcity.com

The Outlet Village
Located on Jebel Ali Road (perfect for shopping enthusiasts from both Dubai and Abu Dhabi) The Outlet Village is the ultimate destination for those in search of high-end labels at consistently discounted prices. It’s quite unlike any other shopping space in the UAE, with Tuscany-style architecture inspired by San Gimignano, a picturesque medieval town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The elegant, historical design of The Outlet Village is something of a contrast to the wealth of modern designers that you find inside. There are currently more than 125 luxury brands to shop at discounted prices spread across more than 25,000 square metres. These range from big-name luxury labels such as Lanvin, Armani, Ermenegildo Zegna and Michael Kors to more niche designers, such as French favourites Sandro and The Kooples, along with four department stores that include Sephora and Galeries Lafayette. Expansion plans are in place to increase the total square footage and make it one of the biggest luxury shopping destinations in the region. theoutletvillage.ae
With extended opening hours at the weekends, there is plenty of time to get your shopping fix
Mall of the Emirates
Since it opened in 2005, Mall of the Emirates has become one of the UAE’s most beloved shopping destinations. There are around 630 international brands sharing more than 300,000 square metres of space, including more than 80 of the world’s most renowned designers in the mall’s special Fashion Dome and Luxury Wing – think Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, as well as designers available for the first time in the emirate, such as Alice & Olivia, McQ (by Alexander McQueen) and Halston Heritage. Other highlights including department store Harvey Nichols and the Apple Store, which is the largest of its kind in the world. Much more than just a place to browse, Mall of the Emirates has plenty to keep shoppers entertained. Along with countless dining options, you will also find Ski Dubai, the first indoor ski resort and snow park in the Middle East, plus a 14-screen VOX Cinemas that’s home to Theatre by Rhodes, a cinema menu curated by the Michelin star-winning chef Gary Rhodes. There are also two adjoining five-star hotels with their own leisure and dining highlights: Kempinski Mall of the Emirates and Sheraton Mall of the Emirates Hotel, Dubai. malloftheemirates.com

The founders of online gifting service BloomingBox, Tariq Abu Samra and Jaya Arunasalam, let us in on the business of spreading joy
From red roses and white tulips to themed cakes, there’s something to suit every taste “Making people happy is serious business,” says Tariq Abu Samra, founder of luxury gifting service BloomingBox. Since its launch in February 2018, the homegrown brand has come a long way, making its mark in the gifting industry within a short span of time, thanks to an impressive line of premium packaged gifts, ranging from fresh flowers to homemade cakes. Managing Partner Jaya Arunasalam tells us: “It was a shared passion that led to the inception of BloomingBox. Driven by the desire to own a brand and spread happiness to people, we decided to tap into the burgeoning gifting industry.

The products available on BloomingBox.com make the perfect gift for special occasions “We are in the business of e-commerce, but to us, that stands for emotional commerce. We follow one rule – everything we sell must come in a box. So it’s all about sending a box filled with happy emotions and smiles on behalf of our customers,” explains Arunasalam. Be it luxury chocolates, decadent cakes or gorgeous blooms, the products available on BloomingBox.com make the perfect gift for special occasions and celebrations. From red roses and white tulips to themed cakes, there’s something to suit every taste and budget. Abu Samra tells us: “We believe in minimalism, that’s why we provide limited options under every product category, which helps simplify the decision-making process for our customers.” But when it comes to quality, there’s no holding back. “We’ve cracked the code to offering a premium line of products. Everything we sell is designed, produced and packaged in-house, which ensures quality control,” he adds. Not keen to rest on their laurels, the team has their sights set on a bright future with exciting plans for expansion in the pipeline. Abu Samra says: “We will soon be introducing a new section featuring gifts for the home, where customers will find everything from candles to cutlery sets. In the months ahead, we will also roll out a subscription-based programme on the website, which will allow customers to purchase products for up to five occasions in advance with a discount.” So, forgetting special occasions will now be a thing of the past! bloomingbox.com

Master chef ———
Chef Romain Van Durmen talks childhood memories, culinary favourites and cooking rules he swears by
The Chef’s Palette at Dubai’s Fairmont The Palm is far from your typical restaurant. Here, it’s all about dining with a difference. The inspiring space is dedicated to the culinary arts and sees enthusiastic gourmands, eager to pick up new skills in the kitchen, enjoying an alternative experience with food. At the helm is chef de cuisine Romain Van Durmen, who has curated an intense schedule of cooking classes, chef’s table experiences and a private Friday brunch at the studio. Keen to learn about how it all ties in with his passion, we chat with chef Durmen to find out more... What inspired your interest in the culinary arts? “My father being a chef had a great impact on me. I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I learned essential cooking techniques firsthand from him at a very young age and I enjoyed being on my feet in the kitchen all day. Having discovered my passion for food when I was 14 years old, I asked my family if I could work in the industry and so they enrolled me in hospitality school. Then, at the age of 16, I got my first break, working in a Michelin-starred restaurant and that’s how my journey began.” Having started out at such a young age, what would you say is your earliest and fondest food memory? “I grew up in the Belgian countryside, surrounded by fields, and I spent a lot of time outdoors. I would climb trees to pick fruit and eat it directly from the branches. Also, every summer, we would pick fresh cherries which grew on our farm and make jam. We would also make fruit preserves with apples and pears. This was my first experience working with seasonal produce and to this day, I can still smell and taste the freshness when I think about it.” What does a typical day at the studio look like? “No two days are ever the same. One day, I might be taking stock of produce to cook pasta with a bunch of 12-year-old kids and the next day, I see myself hosting a small group of adults for a wine paired dinner. It’s exciting because it’s different each day. And being able to teach people how to prepare an array of dishes is a fun experience.”
Do you have a signature dish you swear by? “For me, change is constant. I love creating new dishes and coming up with unique recipes, so I don’t usually repeat the same dishes. However, I do have more knowledge and expertise in French cooking. That being said, I’ve lived in different cities throughout my career and have learned a great deal from local cuisines. At the moment, I’m experimenting with Indian and Thai dishes.” When you’re not behind the scenes, what cuisine do you enjoy indulging in? “I am a big foodie and I enjoy a lot of different cuisines. But my favourite has to be French, although I occasionally enjoy Indian and Thai food. I also love tucking into classic dishes that make use of fresh ingredients. I’ve always believed that when you get the best and freshest of ingredients, that’s half the job done, and from there on, it’s easy to make any dish taste great.” What is the one cooking rule you always teach your students in the studio? “Fat is good. It’s great for cooking, it’s good for health and it enhances the taste of the food. It’s also the best fuel for your brain and I always enjoy cooking with fat, but definitely the right kind. ” For more information

Cipriani Dubai
Family affair ——
Cipriani Dubai brings four generations of Italian culinary traditions and expertise to the heart of DIFC
Cipriani Dubai has been a steady fixture of DIFC’s upscale dining scene since 2016, but its history goes back a lot further. The Cipriani family’s legacy in the hospitality industry spans four generations, starting with the opening of Harry’s Bar in Venice by Giuseppe Cipriani in 1931. The bar became legend, as much for its clientele as for its food and drink, with eccentric authors Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles among its famous guests. Today, it’s still a national landmark in Italy, credited with the invention of the Bellini cocktail (a fusion of peach puree and Prosecco) as well as carpaccio – a light dish of raw meat, usually beef or veal, sliced and pounded thinly then dressed simply with olive oil, lemon and ground pepper. Today, Cipriani Dubai offers both these items on the menu, as a nod to its Venetian roots. In fact, a Bellini is an excellent way to start your evening in the DIFC restaurant. We sip the sweet cocktail and nibble on a bowl of zucchini frito misto – crisp courgette thinly sliced and fried in a light batter – as we peruse the menu and take in the surroundings. Cipriani Dubai has a classic, old-fashioned elegance with a few stylish, modern touches. Designed by Florentine architect Michele Bonan, there’s a strong nautical theme throughout, with chic navy accents, crisp white tablecloths and brown leather chairs. The addition of digital screens behind the bar designed to look like ship portholes adds to the sense of being on a luxury cruise ship. Giant monochrome portraits of 90’s supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Eva Herzigova give a fun, retro touch.

Wagyu fillet
The wagyu fillet is sourced directly from Japan, and cooked with just a sprinkle of sea salt For our starters, we sample the seafood – king crab with olive oil and lemon, and tuna tartare with tonnato sauce. While plenty of Dubai’s fine dining establishments promise only the finest quality ingredients, Cipriani Dubai’s chefs certainly seem to be the most confident when it comes to allowing those ingredients to shine through. The dishes are so simple as to be almost minimalist, but cooked (or not, in the case of the tuna tartare) to perfection. The presentation of the Alaskan king crab is unfussy, and the oceanic flavours are fresh without being overly fishy (even those who don’t normally eat crab will like this dish). The tuna tartare morsels are plump and tender, a mix of yellowfin and bluefin tuna sustainably farmed in Italy, and the accompanying tonnato sauce – a traditional Italian recipe that blends olive oil, anchovy, lemon and egg yolk – is wonderfully moreish. For pasta fans, the must-try dish is the signature baked tagliolini. The secret of a good tagliolini (a pasta shape reminiscent of spaghetti, but thicker) is the ParmigianoReggiano cheese, and at Cipriani Dubai, this is always supplied by the same cheese craftsman from Italy’s Reggiano region, one with a 40-year history. Combined with a creamy bechamel sauce and tender ham, it’s an indulgent treat. Cipriani Dubai’s chefs are masters of the grill, too. The wagyu fillet is sourced directly from Japan, and cooked with just a sprinkle of sea salt on the pan to create a delicious crust. Served medium rare at our waiter’s recommendation, the beef is melt-in-the-mouth tender. Similarly, the lamb chops ‘scottadino’ (an Italian term that means ‘burnt fingers’, used to describe dishes that you eat with your fingers) have that same delicious sear on the outside, while remaining perfectly tender. Both meat dishes are served with their own vegetable sides – the lamb with charred seasonal vegetables and the beef with braised, herby greens. No Italian meal would be complete without a sweet treat, and nothing beats a traditional tiramisu. Sweet ladyfingers are soaked in premium Italian coffee, layered with a light, airy filling made from Italian mascarpone cheese and finished with a delicate dusting of cocoa powder. Combine it with a freshly brewed espresso for the perfect way to end your meal. To make a reservation at Cipriani Dubai or for more information 04 3470003 or

From the chef
“The food of Cipriani Dubai is inspired by Italian homecooking. The flavours bring you back to your childhood, and the dishes can be eaten with joy every day. We use simple ingredients of the highest quality, not overwhelmed by too many sauces, and everything is prepared and served with a lot of love.

And fortunately, the high points don’t end there. A menu peppered with ceviche, sushi and small plates (the beetpica tartare is fantastic) is ideal for fans of sharing concepts, while the roasted duck barrio Chinostyle is highly recommended. Directing on set
From long walks in Downtown Dubai to beachside idylls, filmmaker Hany Madian tells us what makes life great for him in Dubai
Living in Dubai means experiencing diversity at its best. Before my family moved here in 2001, we lived in Paris, Rome, Cairo and London. But it was only in the UAE that I had the opportunity to grow up with people from diverse cultures. This helped broaden my horizons and gain a different perspective on life, which made it easier for me to find my feet in the global media industry. I studied multimedia and filmmaking at The American University of Sharjah - School of Architecture & Design. My career has taken me from Broadway in New York to CNN in Atlanta and also across the UAE, where I’ve directed and produced several television shows, films, commercials and music videos. It’s been quite a journey with different lifestyles, but few cities come close to the magic of Dubai. From a fishing village to a modern metropolis, Dubai has transformed drastically since I first moved here. Although I sometimes miss the humble old neighbourhoods and the time when the coastline was just a stretch of sandy beach, life here has never been better.
La Mer
I love the Dubai sun and the sea. I have a small boat and when I find the time, I like to go sailing. The new beachfront at La Mer is also amazing and you will find everything there, from quick bites at a café to lavish meals at fine dining restaurants. I also like to visit Blue Marlin Ibiza for its spectacular beachside setting, buzzing ambience and line-up of DJs. And catching the sunset from this spot is an extraordinary experience. My weekend ritual involves visiting The Dubai Mall’s Reel Cinemas and taking long walks in Downtown Dubai. When it comes to dining outside, nothing beats The Hot Dog Stand for me. But I also enjoy visiting Nathan Outlaw at Al Mahara and Catch Dubai for their seafood, La Cantine du Faubourg for its fabulous French fare and P.F. Chang’s for their dynamite shrimp. When the city slows down in summer, it may seem like there isn’t much to do. But with the options for dining out, the beaches and the five-stars for staycations, there’s never a dull moment in Dubai.
