PUBLISHER’S NOTE
WINTER'S WONDERS Being a Midwestern town, we don’t balk at the cold. We embrace it! From ice skating the ribbon at the lovely Maggie Daley Park (p.51) or taking a lap around the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink (p.54) under the iconic “Bean” sculpture to cozying up at the perfect table for an amazing meal out, the city is brimming with things to do. The holidays here are equally special, too. Make sure to check out the animated window displays at Macy’s on State Street (p.10), which are always done to the nines, or participate in the candlelit Caroling at Cloud Gate (p.53) series that takes place on select Friday nights in the heart of Millennium Park (M6;D3). Whether you’re looking for traditional favorites or to venture off the beaten path and discover new ones, there’s no shortage of ways to make your winter trip to Chicago memorable. To help you chart your course, this issue of Concierge Preferred offers up some of the season’s best activities hand-picked by those who know Chicago best: her concierges. So what are you waiting for? Bundle up and get out there and explore.
Sincerely,
Jim Gilligan Publisher & Vice President

QUINTESSENTIAL CHICAGO Chicago Restaurant Week ï
CHICAGO WINTER EVENT FAVORITES by Joel Mora @CP_Chicago
If you’re able to take part in all these events then your Chicago winter trip will be remembered less by the temperature and more by warm memories. LIONS, TIGERS, AND ICE SKATING, OH MY
Nothing gives you that warm feeling inside than spending time with the ones you love. Lincoln Park Zoo’s Zoolights (p.54) provides the perfect setting for just that. Through Jan. 3 the zoo is transformed into a winter wonderland with two million lights, ice carvings, musical light shows, animal encounters, ice skating, holiday crafts, and more. The adults can also enjoy warm-spiced wine and beer while the kids enjoy the carousel and train adventure. SKETCH COMEDY CAPITAL
As a city with comedy institutions like The Second City, iO, and ComedySportz sketch comedy groups jump at the opportunity to perform at the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival (p.54). With over 10,000 guests and
hundreds of groups performing this festival dwarfs all comedy festivals. Nationally-renowned groups like Boat, Siblings of Doctors, Cake Batter, and others have performed. For the upcoming schedule make sure to stay tuned to conciergepreferred. com. SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP
Skip the national retailers while visiting Chicago and stand out during all your gift exchanges with unique arts, crafts, jewelry, furniture, culinary treats, and more from the One of a Kind Show and Sale (p.54) at the Merchandise Mart Dec. 3 – 6. With more than 600 artists from across North America, there is surely a vendor to match your style. Not only are the vendors unique but so is the experience where you can enjoy fashion shows, live music, and artists talks amoth other events. BELLY-WARMING FOOD
All the patios are gone but the food that makes Chicago the country’s culinary mecca is still here, and there might not be a better time to enjoy than Chicago Restaurant Week (p.54). Over 250 of Chicago’s most popular One of a Kind Show and Sale î

Chicago Restaurant Week í
Farmhouse Chicago (p.35) is one of Chicago’s finest farm-to-table restaurants. With a craft beer list that features a plethora of hard-to-find local brews and a cocktail list inspired by topics from literature to music, deciding on a drink is rather difficult! Their menu is always rotating, but the top picks at the moment are their rainbow trout fish fry with a side of heirloom beans. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

and revered restaurants will be offering special prix fixe menus from $22 – $44 from Jan. 30 – Feb. 12. FORGET THE BALL. HELLO THE STAR.
Stand back New York as Chicago will debut a soon-to-be New Year’s Eve favorite with Chi-Town Rising (p.54). Congregate at the growingly popular Chicago River for a night of headlining music acts, and welcome 2016 as a star ascends 36 stories of the Hyatt Regency Chicago’s West Tower and end in a fireworks show the city has never seen before right at midnight. Lincoln Park Zoo's Zoolights î
Front Office Manager, Essex Inn
Hash House A Go-Go (p.18) has a very sleek, urban look and is nestled in the heart of the Gold Coast. They have an amazing dish called Andy’s Sage Fried Chicken Benedict. It is enough to put you down for a nice winter’s nap. I don't know if I'm obsessed with sage, but the Big O’ Sage Fried Chicken & Waffle Tower is the best rendition of chicken and waffles I've ever had. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:
DD Museum of Science and Industry (p.50) DD Maggie Daley Park (p.51) DD Chicago History Museum (p.50)
Akilah Perry, Concierge, Corporate Concierge Services
One of my favorite places is La Taberna Tapas (p.36). Named after casual corner eateries found in Spain, La Taberna highlights various flavors from Latin America, Mexico, Spain's Basque region and inspirations from the Mediterranean. The datiles, croquetas de pollo, and vieras salteadas are absolutely delectable and not to be missed. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:
DD 90 Miles Cuban Cafe (p.19) DD Driehaus Museum (p.50) DD Dusable Museum of African American History (p.50)

5 CULINARY STANDOUTS by Amber Holst @CP_Chicago CULINARY WUNDERKINDS
Named one of Esquire’s “Best New Restaurants for 2013," Embeya (p.38) quickly became one of Chicago’s “restaurants-of-the-moment” celebrated for its refined Asian cuisine and its dashing atmosphere. Now helmed by nationally-acclaimed chef Mike Sheerin, the menu has been creatively re-tooled, and showcases dishes based on a range of Asian ingredients, flavors, and textures integrated with French technique. Must-try dishes include Sheerin’s Smoked scallops with pickled turmeric and smoked walnut and the delectable Peking duck, slowroasted with blood-orange hoisin glaze, on sweet pea purée. If you’re in town on Thursday, Jan. 14, make sure to snag a reservation for the second Spice Route Dinner Series with guest chef Paul Virant of Perennial Virant, Vie, and Vistro. Joining forces in the kitchen, the five-course family-style tasting menu, which will showcase 15 - 18 dishes all together, curated by Chefs Sheerin and Virant will incorporate flavors from their respective restaurants’ cuisines.

Big Star Photo by Chloe List ì
Part dive bar and part taqueria, Big Star (p.18) is a honky-tonk serving up inexpensive, approachable, and excellent food and drink in the center of Wicker Park. Led by James Beard Award-winning chef Paul Kahan, Big Star offers gussied-up Mexican street food—walking taco, anyone?— with the motto aqui vendemos sabor or “here we sell deliciousness”. And, folks, they do. While wildly popular during the warmer months for its spacious patio, Big Star is just as delightful when experienced indoors and is the perfect, low key respite to stave off winter’s chill. Also from the talents behind Big Star, Paul Kahan’s Nico Osteria (p.18) takes coastal Italian fare to a whole new level. Located in the Gold Coast’s (M6;A2) Thompson Hotel, this hot spot brings authentically Italian seafood and housemade pastas together with inventive pasties and desserts in a rustic, chic environment. While the menu changes daily to best showcase the pristine product, standout items range from lobster lasagnette with Swiss chard, tomato, and crème fraiche to the extensive crudo offerings that would be the envy of any sushi restaurant in town. DINE DOWNTOWN
A tapas-style restaurant, the Purple Pig’s (p.20) tagline is “cheese, swine, and wine” and delivers on all counts. The small-plate, Mediterranean cuisine from Jimmy Bannos Jr. ranges from their house-made charcuterie and antipasto options like pork fried almonds with rosemary and garlic (they’re addicting!) to smears such as their house-cured lardo iberico. Polly Pancoe, Concierge, Hotel Reservation Management
An authentic holiday treat, make sure to visit the Walnut Room (p.20) at Macy’s on State (p.10) to dine under The Great Tree. I have been doing this since childhood, and it’s a tradition that I still enjoy each holiday season!
Big Star Photo by Lucy Angel í
While communal seating and a no-reservations policy may deter some, don’t let it. This spot delivers every time and is the perfect place to unwind after a day spent shopping along the Magnificent Mile (M9). Serious cocktails and loads of craft beers pair perfectly with Bottlefork Bar and Kitchen’s (p.34) menu of upscale bar bites. The cozy River North restaurant’s interior is dark, woody, and inviting, and its 40-foot-long kitchen/bar counter enables patrons to enjoy the action of watching their food and drink being prepared, like a dinner party congregating in the kitchen of a friend’s house. They also offer a set business lunch every Monday through Friday featuring your choice of a starter and main dish with your choice of soft drink for just $18. Embeya î

CHICAGO'S BEST DANCE PARTIES By Amanda Cooper @CP_Chicago
It may be chilly outside, but these underground dance parties will have you burning up the dance floor. GET SOULFUL
Established in 2008, Windy City Soul Club (p.46) is one of Chicago’s longestrunning northern soul dance parties. Spinning the best up-beat, Motown-y sounds in town, their DJs play all original vinyl from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Most of the music comes from local or Midwestern artists, with a majority of the albums produced right here The Hideout ï

in Chicago. This dance club’s monthly home is at The Empty Bottle (p.46), in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighborhood, where they set up shop one Saturday night every month except for their annual New Year’s Eve party, which takes place at the Logan Square Auditorium (p.46). It’s best to arrive early—preferably before 10 p.m.—and make sure to bring cash, as the Empty Bottle doesn’t accept cards. LATE-NIGHT DANCE PARTY
The Hideout (p.46) has been around since 1934, tucked away on a quiet street in the center of the industrial corridor along the North Branch of the Chicago River. In its early days, The Hideout was ran by bootleggers and gamblers. Today, it is home to the Malt Shop (p.46), one of my favorite dance parties in the city. The Malt Shop takes place the second Saturday of each month at midnight. They play the best of the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. There is even a Soul Train competition at 1 a.m. where you can shake your groove thing to win free drinks. It is the sweatiest, best time I’ve ever had on Saturday night in Chicago! The night starts off with dance classes at 7:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. with instructors from the local dance studio Latin Rhythms teaching a new Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Kizomba, or Cha-Cha dance routine. At 9 p.m., you can show off your existing or newlyacquired salsa dancing skills with some of the best Latin video DJ’s in Chicago. Sip some mojitos and dance the night away! JUMPIN’ JOINT
Monday nights don’t have to be boring, especially when you have a live band and swing dancing! Every Monday night Fizz Bar and Grill’s (p.43) upstairs lounge offers beginner swing dancing lessons at 8 p.m., followed by a live local jazz band from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tip: Go early for the ½ price pizza and bottles of wine, it is the perfect fuel to keep you jump and jiving all night long! at the Morton Arboretum
ON SCREEN & ON STAGE
On a snowy Christmas Eve in 1983, the operator of the Music Box Theatre decided to show two old holiday movies and sing a few Christmas carols during the intermission. Now, 32 years later, the Music Box Christmas Sing-A-Long & Double Feature (p.50) has become an extravaganza (Dec. 11-25) with people from all around Chicagoland having made this old-fashioned event part of their holiday tradition. Each year, revelers are greeted by none other than Santa Claus who welcome the audience and, accompanied by the theater organist, leads them in the singing of the most cherished Christmas carols of all time before taking in screenings of "White Christmas" or cheering for Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey during a showing of "It’s a Wonderful Life." The Charles Dickens classic "A Christmas Carol" at the Goodman Theatre (p.55) is an ongoing tradition during the holidays in Chicago. The story, set in 19th-century England, follows the prominent Ebenezer Scrooge who receives unexpected visits from past, present, and future ghosts who convince him to change

his ways and become a kinder person (runs through Dec. 27). Stage 773’s (p.55) hilarious holiday cavalcade "It’s a Wonderful Santaland Miracle, Nut Cracking Christmas Story... Jews Welcome!" is a familyfriendly, interactive show featuring familiar Christmas carols, original musical numbers, dance, sketch comedy, puppets, and everything in-between. Stage 773 puts their twist on the traditional holiday show, packing the world’s most beloved stories and traditions into one extravagant event. The show runs through Dec. 27. Ice skating is the perfect social outing. It’s festive and great for dates. Millennium Park’s McCormick Tribune Ice Rink (p.54) offers free lessons every Friday at 11 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m. So if you’re not comfortable on skates, you can take a lesson and impress your friends (or potential date) when you actually hang out.

Museum of Science and Industry ìî FESTIVE AND BRIGHT
Ilumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum (p.54) runs through Jan. 2 transforming a wintertime walk in the woods into a colorful, inspiring experience like no other. Bundle up and venture down the onemile path, surrounded by 50 acres of woodlands bathed in theatrical LED lighting in shades of vivid electric blue, hot pink, and neon green. Along the way, a series of experiences—programmed lighting, video and sound seamlessly integrated into the landscape—encourage visitors to see trees in a different light. From Meadow Lake Magic whose dazzling lights create the illusion of skipping stones on Meadow Lake to Symphony Woods, where visitors can watch lights appear to dance to the music of the beloved Nutcracker Suite, it’s a must-experience holiday adventure. Experience the beloved annual holiday tradition with the Museum of Science and Industry’s (p.50) 74th annual Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light exhibits. This year’s colorful theme is inspired by the Museum’s temporary exhibit Robot Revolution. In the Rotunda, the 45-foot Grand Tree will be decked out with more than 30,000 twinkling colorful lights and hundreds of ornaments and trimmings in bright, vibrant shades. Make sure Stage 773 î
to experience the “snow” that falls every half hour. The Museum’s Main Floor dazzles with 50, 12-foot trees beautifully decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s ethnic communities representing their diverse culture and holiday traditions. Holidays of Light, now in its 20th year, is a multicultural display of holidays that celebrate light or enlightenment. Each year, the display highlights the traditions of the Chinese New Year, Diwali (a Hindu and Sikh festival), Kwanzaa (celebrated by African Americans), Ramadan (celebrated by Muslims), Hanukkah (a Jewish holiday), Visakha Puja Day (a Buddhist holiday), and St. Lucia Day (a Swedish tradition). The celebrations run through Jan. 3.
