publisher/editor's note

HAPPY CONCIERGE DAY, CHICAGO! By official proclamation from Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the team here at Concierge Preferred is proud to announce that the City of Chicago celebrated its fifth annual Concierge Day in Chicago on January 29, 2015. Concierge Preferred reached out to the Mayor’s Office in 2011, requesting that the city create a day dedicated to all concierges—from residential and corporate to hotel and other types—as a way to formally pay tribute for all they do to make Chicago the world class destination it is. Since then, we have been active in working directly with the Mayor’s Office to successfully designate the last Thursday of every January as Concierge Day in Chicago. To date, Chicago is the only city that has such a designation. And it’s a well-deserved honor. Chicagoland’s concierges are the individuals who are working behind the scenes, answering questions, and coordinating important functions that truly enable tourism to thrive and are constantly creating memorable experiences for their guests. And it’s because of that hard work, research, and insiders knowledge that we polled over 600 concierges to compile a list of their favorite places around town. Let’s face it; it’s all but a proven scientific fact that concierges know more about Chicago than everyone else. And that’s everyone else combined. So what do they say the city’s top places are? Well, read on to find out! No matter if you’re looking to shop in one of our neighborhood boutiques (p.10), dine at one of the city’s best restaurants (p.18) or spend an afternoon at a museum (p.52) it’s all here—and sourced from those who know Chicago best: her concierge. Sincerely,

Jim Gilligan Publisher & Vice President

8 FESTIVE FAVORITES By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago SNOW MUCH FUN Navy Pier’s Snow Days (p.63) returns Feb. 7–8 with family fun including everything from an international snow sculpting competition and snow games to snowboarding lessons and more. First, witness international teams of talented professional snow sculptors create masterpieces out of 10-foot blocks of man-made snow. The artists begin sculpting on Wednesday, but the free festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday. If you’re there on a Sunday, warm up indoors at Neighborhoods of the World (p.62). This series celebrates the rich tapestry of Chicago’s diverse communities through lively folk music, traditional dance, cuisine, crafts, and more.

ä Dyeing of the Chicago River

â Neighborhoods of the World ä Chicago Theatre Week

CURTAINS UP The wildly popular Chicago Theatre Week (p.61) returns for its third incarnation Feb. 12–22, offering visitors the chance to experience Chicago’s world-class theater without breaking the bank (tickets run $15–$30). With more than 100 productions—housed in spaces ranging from historic downtown theaters to the unique, raw, and intimate settings of the city’s storefront stages—there’s no shortage of extraordinary theatrical offerings to enjoy.

Having a delicious brunch while listening to live blues is a great way to spend a Sunday. River Roast (p.37) offers shrimp and grits and hangover soup in addition to more traditional food. You can also enjoy a roast bloody with crackling garnish while you listen to live blues music. Chef John Hogan often leaves the kitchen to join in with the band. Sit back, listen to the music, and watch the Chicago River roll by. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Chicago Theatre Week (p.61) • 10,000 Maniacs at City Winery (p.61) • “First Wives Club” at the Oriental Theatre (p.64)

â Chicago Auto Show #CAS15 The 107th Chicago Auto Show (p.61) returns to McCormick Place Feb. 14–22. With more than one million square feet of floor space, this is the country’s largest car show and features displays of multiple world and North American introductions and a complete range of domestic and imported passenger cars, trucks, sport-utility vehicles, minivans, and concept cars. In all, hundreds of different vehicles will be on display, plus hundreds of interactive and autorelated exhibits, competition vehicles, collector cars, and more. YEAR OF THE SHEEP You will swear you’ve been dropped into the heart of Beijing as Chicago— and its vibrant Chinese community— celebrate the new lunar year (2015 is the Year of the Sheep) with myriad cultural performances, parades, special events, and more. Make sure to check out the multi-sensory Chinese New Year Lightscape on State Street (p.62) from Feb. 16–March 6. This unique light and sound installation brightens up the historic stretch, creating vivid patterns of color choreographed to music in celebration of the Chinese New Year. Of course, it wouldn’t be a New Year’s celebration

5411 Empanada (p.21) is a quaint Argentine restaurant where you will find an assortment of baked empanadas. My favorites are the bacon, date, and goat cheese or sweet corn. No other drink is more Argentine than the national drink of Fernet-Branca and CocaCola, and here you can find Fernet on tap! If you are wondering what 5411 stands for, it is the country and city code for Buenos Aires. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Little Goat Diner (p.39) • Brü (p.21) • Pops for Champagne (p.50)

without a lot of pomp and circumstance. From the Argyle Street Lunar New Year Parade (p.61) on Feb. 21 to the popular Chinese Lunar New Year Parade (p.62) in Chinatown (M6;H2) on Feb. 22, there’s no shortage of ways to herald in the New Year in a big, loud, and celebratory way. GREEN RIVER It isn’t St. Paddy’s until the Chicago River dons its best Irish finery. The Dyeing of the Chicago River is a beloved tradition—which takes place at 9:30 a.m. on March 14—and leaves the river a stunning shade of green and marks the start of the Irish holiday and annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade (p.63). Get into the spirit with the rest of the city and line the river; later you can go out for green beers.

Go down the alley, through the unmarked doorway, descend the staircase riddled with skulls, and discover the tropical paradise that is Three Dots & A Dash (p.49). This is the place that kick-started the resurgence of Tiki bars—and rightfully so—and the complexity of their cocktails is as magnificent as the retro, Polynesian-inspired atmosphere. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Bottlefork Bar and Kitchen (p.34) • Untitled (p.49) • Momotaro (p.39)

shopping

SHOP LIKE A LOCAL By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago HEAD NORTH Once a predominantly Swedish neighborhood, Andersonville (p.17) has quickly evolved into one of the top shopping destinations in town—especially for those looking for antiques and to support some of the best independent shops in town. From Andersonville Wine & Spirits with its obscure varietals and beautifully-curated beer selection to the pet lovers’ nirvana that is Jameson Loves Danger—whose dog grooming station offers hair styling and even nail coloring—there is no shortage of unique boutiques to explore along Clark Street. For an eclectic enclave with an array of modish spots, venture to the cobblestoned center of Lincoln Square (p.17). We can’t get enough of the century-old Merz Apothecary, where everything—from the old glass bottles lining the shelves in the back to the way the store is arranged—feels historic. And exotic: you’ll find tons of European soap and lotion imports and other oddities—from high end

â Shinola in Wicker Park shaving supplies to natural toothbrushes—that you’d be hard-pressed to find anyplace else. Gene’s Sausage Shop & Delicatessen is another huge staple of the neighborhood. This old school deli is worth spending a couple of hours perusing. The first floor is filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, the glorious deli counter (with fresh pierogi and all the Hungarian goulash a girl could want), and an entire section devoted to imported chocolates. Upstairs they have dried goods, booze, and a large section of condiments and pickled things. Plus, in the summer the

roof becomes a beer pavilion! For a real urban fix, make your way to Wicker Park/Bucktown (p.17) to shop its edgy clothing boutiques and eclectic galleries that reflect the neighborhood’s bohemian spirit. Whether you’re searching for something high-end, designer, bridal, or that one-of-a-kind thrift store find, these adjacent communities are sure to become your go-to shopping destination. The retail scene here ranges from Alexis Bittar and Marc by Marc Jacobs to Akira and Carhartt. Lincoln Park (p.17) is home to numerous concierge-approved attractions like the Chicago History Museum and Lincoln Park Zoo, but it’s also one of Chicago’s premier shopping destinations offering everything from independently-owned shops to highend home furnishing stores. Along the neighborhood’s multiple shopping corridors you’ll see high-end stores and charming boutiques mixed with restaurants, making it a great option for an all-day shopping excursion.

EDIBLE FINDS After shopping up and down State Street (p.17), treat yourself to the beloved, bite-sized goodness that is Frango Mints. Available at Macy’s State Street (p.13), these melt-inyour-mouth signature sweets are a Chicago tradition dating back to 1918 and make for a terrifically tasty souvenir. A 63,000-square-foot emporium to all things tasty, Eataly (p.16) boasts 23 eateries, one fine dining restaurant, and over 10,000 products for sale. There are butchers, fish mongers, and even a Nutella bar. The second location in the United States, this food lover’s nirvana is the perfect respite after a busy day of shopping along The Magnificent Mile (p.17). Whether you’re looking to cozy up in Birreria—Eataly’s brew-pub offering house-brewed craft ales and rotating draft selections of rare beers—or grab the perfect culinary gift to bring back home, it’s all here.

DINING AROUND THE WORLD By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

â Roka Akor The best way to get to know any city is through its cuisine, and in Chicago you can get to know the city itself and the whole world through the food. ASIA Le Colonial (p.24) not only transports you to Vietnam but with its wicker chairs, palm trees, bamboo shades, and antique light fixtures it feels like Vietnam when the French occupied Saigon. However, the food keeps it strictly Vietnamese with their delicious goi boi, spicy beef salad; pho, oxtail soup with rice noodles; and vit quay, ginger-marinated roast duck. You can cross the South and East China Seas and into the 21st century at Roka Akor (p.37). This swanky Japanese robata grill in the heart of River North serves up mouthwatering filets, ribeyes, wagyu beef, and prawns in

delicious marinades like chili ginger sauce, Yuzukosho chili paste, and sweet garlic soy. To cover the entire continent head to Embeya (p.38) in the West Loop for great rabbit leg, mussels, duck, and crab dishes. EUROPE Travel to Barcelona at “Iron Chef” Jose Garces’ Mercat a la Planxa (p.37) and you’ll never want to leave. A tour guide is always great and Mercat’s tasting menus give you all the Spanish flavors, or you can just order the tasty and still mind-boggling empanada de verde, an empanada filled with manchego and spinach; the savory zarzuela de mejillones, PEI mussels in a broth of fino sherry; and the ropa de cabra, shredded goat with goat cheese and a baguette. For small plates of the Italian vari-

â Benny's Chop House ety, don’t miss Quartino Ristorante (p.37). There’s no secret ingredient or fusions in this enoteca. It’s just a wine bar that focuses on quality ingredients served simply, and you will thank them for every single bite. Grab a good group and taste the artisanal salame, house-made cavatelli pasta, veal meatballs, and polenta fries. CHICAGO I know it’s great that Chicago offers cuisine from around the world, but we know you came all this way for some Chicago staples. Meat lovers must make a stop at Benny’s Chop House (p.34) where they hold the distinction of being one of the few restaurants anywhere that offer dry-aged, wetaged, and natural prime cuts of steak. They offer great seafood, pasta, and surprisingly delicious seasonal items, but if you’re at Benny’s you’re here for their juicy steaks or delicious veal, lamb, and pork chops. You can’t come to Chicago without visiting one of chef Paul Kahan’s eateries and with avec (p.38) you can’t go wrong. The rustic, communal, tidy setting and no-reservation policy can make it difficult to get a table for dinner, so you’ll have better chances during their new Sunday brunch where they continue to add some Midwestern style to the Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Typical brunches cater to your body’s need of sustenance after a night of partying and avec’s options serve that purpose but it’s the sustenance you deserve. Your body will thank you for filling it with the mammoth-sized

ä Embeya

â avec chorizo-stuffed medjool dates, the Moroccan pancakes with fried chicken wings, and the pizza covered with pancetta, roasted potato, and fried eggs. You’ll never want to go back to a typical brunch again.

KEY INGREDIENTS FOR A CHICAGO NIGHT By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago A good night in Chicago only requires four things: comedy, live music, craft beer, and some games. COMEDY You never have to wonder if a show at The Second City (p.50) is going to be funny once you look at the pictures of the alumni on the wall. Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Chris Farley, KeeganMichael Key, and Bill Murray are just a miniscule sample of the hilarity that has walked across that stage. Every show at The Second City is different, but they are all based in sketch comedy and the constant improvisation and editing that the players work tirelessly on to make Chicago audiences cry in laughter. The intimate venue is great for a date and makes you feel like you can go up there and make people laugh, but as soon as the actors play improv games you’ll realize it’s better to leave the laughter to the professionals. LIVE MUSIC Chicago blues stands out with its gritty, urban attitude that is the precursor to rock ‘n’ roll, so it’s only right to listen to it in a venue that

â Watershed encapsulates that same attitude. Kingston Mines (p.50) is that venue. With two rooms with two different bands playing, you’ll find it difficult to just stay in one. The blues is not a genre where you smile while listening. Your face should look like it’s in utter agony and Joanna Connor’s soulful guitar playing will definitely incite that, or it might be Nellie Tiger Travis’ powerful vocal interpretation of blues and R&B classics. CRAFT BEER While the bottle says Petaluma, Calif., Lagunitas (p.47) feels like a Chicago beer. It might be the fact that owner Tony Magee is from here or the Soldier-Field-sized brewery they set

â The Second City up in the Pilsen neighborhood. You’ll enter through a hallway of tanks with laser lights and “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’s” “Pure Imagination” playing, and end up in a beautiful tap room with live music, great food, and hopefully some of their delicious and slightly dangerous Brown Shugga—it has a 9.9% ABV. Fun fact: the bread made in their kitchen contains yeast they use in their beer.

For a taste of what the Midwest has to offer in beers head to Watershed (p.49). This warm, cozy parlour hidden under Pops for Champagne (p.50) offers Half Acre, Bells, Founder’s, Great Lakes, and more. While craft beer is king, don’t miss the opportunity to try some of the craft cocktails from their masterful bartenders. With Watershed bourbon barrel gin, Carpano Antica, brandy, mole, and orange bitters, their Drivin’ on Nine will have you feeling good. GAMES If you want some excellent craft beer but want to have a little fun at the same time head to either of Headquarters Beercade’s (p.47) two locations. Headquarters gives you the opportunity to beat that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game you could never beat as a kid and adds some nostalgia with “American Gladiators” playing on the TVs. The best part is all the games are free to play.

AWE-INSPIRING MUSEUMS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago The weather still isn’t perfect to do a lot of exploring outside, but Chicago has you covered with countless firstclass museums that’ll keep you warm and let you explore world’s out of your reach. Voted the world’s best museum by “TripAdvisor,” The Art Institute of Chicago (p.55) (AIC) is the place where your friends back home will give you a hard time if you don’t visit. The great thing about AIC is that it is so massive that it attracts the art connoisseurs excited about AIC’s constant groundbreaking exhibits like their “Ireland: Crossroads of Art and Design” exhibit, and attracts the novice who will be beyond excited to see “American Gothic,” “Nighthawks,” and “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” outside of a textbook. If you’re with a loved one never pass up the opportunity to recreate the famous kissing scene in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” in front of Marc Chagall’s “America Windows.” There’s no need to hide the fact that for a lot of visitors the word museum has been stereotyped as boring, but the best thing about the Museum of Science and Industry (p.56) (MSI) is that it shatters all stereotypes. You can spend your entire trip to Chicago visiting MSI and still not go through every knowledge-expanding, sensorybombarding, interactive exhibit.

â The Art Institute of Chicago ä Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

Whether it’s exploring the inside of a World War II German submarine, descending into a coal mine shaft, or the crowd-favorite baby chicks hatching, the exhibits have something for all ages. Parents, it’s ok to pretend to know how your kids just created a 40foot tornado in the museum and then ask guides how it was done when the kids aren’t looking. We all do it. Not all of Chicago’s museums are gargantuan. In fact, you can go through many in a couple of hours. In Streeterville, you might walk past a beautiful 19th-century mansion and not know that inside is the beautifully opulent Driehaus Museum (p.55). The threestory Gilded Age mansion contains many of the original furnishings of the Samuel M. Nickerson family, the original owners of the house, mixed with the art, jewelry, and decorative pieces from the Driehaus Collection

of Fine and Decorative Arts showcasing many works by the talented Louis Comfort Tiffany. Another Streeterville staple is the boundary-pushing Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (p.56) (MCA). The MCA’s collection alone will keep you around with works from icons like Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Chuck Close, and René Magritte, but their rotating exhibits give the visitor a chance to feel the pulse of art today. MCA does a great job showcasing international artists like with their Doris Salcedo exhibit, the first retrospective of the Colombian sculptor. However, they never forget their home as they highlight many of Chicago’s artists like the thought provoking sculptures and installations from South Shore’s Faheem Majeed touching on community activism and institutional racism—his first solo exhibition.
