4 REASONS TO VISIT GALENA
Galena was once the home of Ulysses S. Grant, and today guests can tour his old residence and steep themselves in American history. In fact, 85% of Galena’s buildings are in a National Register Historic District. Must-visit spots include the Grant Home, The Galena & U.S. Grant Museum, and the DeSoto and Washburne Houses.
By Amber Holst
Charming Main Street Main Street carries the nickname, "the Helluva Half Mile," which is a clever play on Chicago's Magnificent Mile. Due to the city’s no "chains" ordinance, Galena’s primary shopping, dining, and drinking district maintains a unique ambience with an interesting array of antique shops and boutiques. Make sure to make the steep climb one street up to Bench Street, as there’s historic and architecturally fascinating buildings galore. Tipsy Tastings Why not tour a gorgeous country vineyard on your trip? Galena Cellars Vineyard & Winery offers an hour-long tour that first covers the history of the winery before you visit the vineyard to see the 22 grape varietals they grow. Craft spirits more your thing? Blaum Brothers Distilling Company has gained some momentum in the craft spirits world with its bourbon, gin, moonshine and other spirits. Make a stop here and get a firsthand look at their distilling process.
WHERE TO STAY
Activities to Savor the Views
Aldrich Guest House is an intimate B&B that dates back to a time when both President Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant roamed the halls. The Jail Hill Inn is a charming option set inside a 135-year-old building atop a hill overlooking the Galena countryside. If you prefer on-site activities to complement your accommodations, then make sure to check out Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa.
EE ENJOYILLINOIS.COM S FOR MORE INFO ON GALENA.
Q
If you’re feeling active, book a rafting trip, hit up the nearby ski resort, or try the 40-acre Horseshoe Mound, known for its winding bike trails and scenic views all the way to Iowa and Wisconsin Plus, there’s a bunch of fun activities to be found along the Galena River, such as kayak and canoe rentals and riverboat cruises.

City Winery at the Chicago Riverwalk offers a prime spot to watch the boats mosey up and down the Chicago River. Besides its selection of wines on tap— best paired with a sandwich or charcuterie board—you simply can’t beat having a cold beer under the skyline and on the Riverwalk.
Tucked behind a charming old coach house, Waterfront Cafe is a darling spot on Lake Michigan that offers dog-friendly outdoor dining and live music on select evenings. The menu offers uncomplicated favorites like lobster rolls and summer salads in addition to beer, wine, and cocktails.

Shore Club is the natural progression of Chicago's Lake Shore dining-scape. It’s both as upscale and casual as you want it to be offering swanky cabanas and outdoor games into a mix of patio, sand, and tented expanse.

Transport yourself to Morocco at Beatnik on the River’s lush and plush waterfront patio. Overlooking the South Branch of the Chicago River, expect a plethora of pillows, rose, beautiful people, and inspired nosh!
Still flying somewhat under the radar, Café Michelle boasts an ample and reasonable menu alongside a stunning view of the lake and bobbing boats in DuSable Harbor. It’s also a great spot to see Navy Pier’s fireworks every Wednesday and Saturday night (through Labor Day weekend).

This meat and potatoes town has been begging for lighter fare, and the calls were answered with Pacific Standard Time (PST). Lively, tasty, and trendy, PST is the place to be! Also a current favorite of Bobby Gonzalez, chef concierge at the Kimpton Gray Hotel, he says the atmosphere and California-inspired cuisine are simply spectacular.
Aba is still a mystery to most having came onto the scene without much fanfare, but has quickly become a prominent Mediterranean option with a beautiful, clean space indoors and some of the most enviable alfresco tables in town. Emily Mayer, concierge at Viceroy Chicago, agrees saying that Aba is sure to be the reigning king for a while to come.
Gibsons Italia is a must do. “The Gibsons Restaurant Group hasn’t opened a restaurant in the city for a decade, and their eponymous steakhouse remains the city’s topgrossing independent restaurant,” he says. “As a result, I think diners have been very excited to see how Gibsons would up the ante and boy have they! The view might be the best in the city right now.”
Chicago’s grand dame of Italian fine dining, Spiaggia is a beloved restaurant that has been a bucket list foodie destination for both locals and visitors alike for decades (and for good reason). Coupled with Executive Chef Joe Flamm’s recent Top Chef victory, this memorable mainstay continues to offer an unparalleled dining experience.
5 REASONS TO EXPERIENCE THE NEW CHICAGO CHOP HOUSE By Amber Holst It’s Classic Chicago
For the Meat
Their Seafood’s No Slouch
Irish Influences
Situated in a landmark brownstone from 1897, Chicago’s history is framed on every wall of this legendary eatery, including the city’s only complete portrait set of every Chicago mayor (not even City Hall can boast that honor).
With 26 cuts of meat on the menu, this icon is home to one of the last blade saws in the city and does all of their butchery in-house. Looking for a different cut? No problem. If it fits in the broiler, they’ll cook it. So far they’ve managed to fit a 100-ounce cut in there.
Start out with their jumbo shrimp cocktail. Matthew McCahill, the owner, is an alumni of the legendary (though now defunct) Nick’s Fishmarket. He’s one of the only people that has their old cocktail sauce recipe and has revamped the one here, making it cult-status worthy.
Sure, there’s green walls and a bar on every floor, Irish butter, and one heck of a stuffed baked potato. But the real gem here is the Irish Coffee. The owner drew his inspiration from San Francisco’s Buena Vista Cafe. It’s really the best we’ve had in Chicago.
14 The Concept Located right off the 606 Trail at Milwaukee Avenue in Bucktown, this recipe-testing kitchen brings a new breakfast twist to the neighborhood. Here, diners get to play a part in sampling wish-list concepts while enjoying unfettered access to the culinary creative process. What may wind up on menus at Yolk’s seven area locations? You get to be a judge.
YOLK’S TEST KITCHEN
Be the First to Experience This New Concept By Amber Holst
Coffee Bar Unlike traditional Yolk restaurants, the layout of this concept is different. In addition to a seated dining experience, guests can enjoy a full coffee bar and grab-and-go items for those doing the trail. Complete with a space to work, and even a full bar, the test kitchen model carries over here, too, enabling partners like Metropolis Coffee to product test their latest and greatest.
Your Voice Matters To round out the experience guests are invited to leave their feedback on what they loved (or didn’t) on a giant chalkboard wall. A fun and informal way to get good honest feedback, it also doubles as a perfect Instagram photo opp. Did you love those jet black crepes with pulled duck you tested? Let them know!
5 REASONS CATCH 35 IS A CONCIERGE FAVORITE By Amber Holst
NO-FAIL WINE PAIRINGS
FAVORITE DISHES
Seafood and wine make a natural pair, and Catch 35’s diverse and progressive wine list delivers on all counts. From tried-and-true big name labels to their impressive lineup of small, boutique wineries, the selection here truly offers something for every palate.
Two tried-and-true dishes that top concierges’ lists are Catch 35’s Chilean sea bass with a complex yet delicate Hawaiian ginger scallion sauce and their signature Szechuan scallop appetizer that will have you hooked after one bite.
DINNER & A SHOW
LIVE JAZZ 5 NIGHTS A WEEK
BANG FOR THE BUCK
Just a short walk from all of the major downtown theaters, Catch 35 is the go-to pre-theater dining spot and a concierge favorite. Fun fact? If you use their valet, the cost ($12) is deducted from your check. Bonus? You don’t have to pick your car up until after the show.
The lounge at Catch 35 has become a popular gathering spot to have a few drinks, bites, and to take in some great music. The Eric Hochberg Trio performs every Tuesday-Saturday starting at 6 p.m. and features an everchanging roster of critically acclaimed jazz musicians.
Catch 35 offers their 3-course, $37 prix fixe menu anytime. The first course is a choice of soup or salad, second course offers a choice of one of their signature dishes, with the third course being a choice of one option from their dessert menu.
16
Bad Apple
5 MUST-TRY BURGERS
We dare you not to sink your teeth into these elevated takes on the American classic.
Ramon Gomez, chef concierge at The Gwen, touts this spot as having the best burgers in town. Bonus? They are family friendly! When you’re done there, he suggests walking a few blocks north to continue the apple theme and grab a cider at The Northman, one of Chicago’s first cider bars. Whisk A relaxed and rustic, industrial-chic spot in Ukrainian Village, Philippe Gills, Chef Concierge at the Langham Hotel, recommends the House Burger at Whisk. What he refers to as a "cheat day" burger, it's an 8-ounce grass-fed burger topped with chihuahua cheese, chipotle mayo, guacamole, and tortilla strips. "That's why I call it that," he says.
By Trisha Carey
Au Cheval You know when you take a bite of a burger and the bun falls apart? Yeah, we hate that too. Which is exactly why Kyle Francsis, concierge at the RitzCarlton, recommends the one at Au Cheval. Their burger comes standard with with two patties and cheese but he recommends getting the thick cut bacon and the fried egg as well! The best part? The bun stays intact. Kuma’s Corner Known for their heavy metal-inspired theme, Kuma’s also has a reputation for their burgers. Brian Lopez, concierge at Bloomingdale’s, loves the Lair of the Minotaur. “Named after one of Chicago’s local metal bands, the burger is deliciously simple, but features a boozy twist since it’s topped with slices of bourbon–infused pear,” he says. Lockdown Bar & Grill Luis Torres, concierge at Trump International Hotel & Tower, suggests visiting Lockdown Bar & Grill in Ukrainian Village for an unforgettable food experience. “My go-to is their Punk Bitch burger that comes with Swiss, prosciutto, and a garlic mustard aioli. Add on a fried egg and avocado? It is what dreams are made of,” he says.

RM CHAMPAGNE SALON
Q RM Champagne Salon
3 NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTS FOR ALFRESCO EATS By Amber Holst
WEST LOOP
Bask in the twilight of the evening as you drink Champagne under the stars at RM Champagne Salon, the West Loop’s hidden piazza for petit fours and bubbles galore. A favorite of Rebecca Starodub, concierge at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, enjoy cocktails and conversation at one of the city’s coolest patios (while the weather permits!) and most unmatched spaces. RM Champagne Salon brings excitement and a sense of yesteryear to an already remarkable area, yet does so in a way that is mysteriously subtle and comforting. Enjoy their beautiful selection of cheeses, Alsatian flatbreads, or the sinfully delicious Lobster Deviled Egg.
ENJOY BREATHTAKING VIEWS OF THE CHICAGO SKYLINE AND LAKE MICHIGAN AT RIVA RESTAURANT ON NAVY PIER. MENU ITEMS INCLUDE PREMIUM SEAFOOD, PRIME STEAKS AND DAILY SPECIALS AS WELL AS EXTENSIVE WINE SELECTIONS. looking for the perfect space for your private event? contact Andrea Frankos for more info afrankos@stefanigroup.com
Moody's Pub EDGEWATER
Located in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood on the North Side, this old-time local favorite tops Hotel Palomar Concierge Mark Kraemer’s list and is known for their simple and delicious burgers and massive fenced-in beer garden (with plenty of trees offering cool respite from the heat). The two-tiered space has scores of tables and benches, many of which can be easily moved together to accommodate groups of friends or families. No matter if you’re looking to share a pitcher of their red sangria or sip on gimlet, this favorite is one of Chicago’s best-kept secret patios. The Duck Inn BRIDGEPORT
“Where else can you dine on a patio that’s a literal backyard facing neighbors?,” says Langham Chicago Chef Concierge Philippe Gills. Occupying a corner tavern in the Bridgeport neighborhood that predates Prohibition, The Duck Inn serves up creative duck dishes—as the name would imply—in addition to American eats ranging from cheese curds with hoppy mayo and their delectable duck fat dog (Chicago style, of course) to heartier fare like the braised pork shank with spaetzle, pickled kale, and lingonberries. Coupled with their inventive cocktail program (read the descriptions, they don’t disappoint) and comfortable atmosphere, you’ll soon come to see why this neighborhood gem has grown into a true destination restaurant.

1 THE LAKEFRONT RESTAURANT: This is the Eggler from Lakefront Restaurant at Theater on the Lake recently enjoyed by Rebecca Starodub, concierge at the Radisson Blu Aqua. They make their everything bagels from scratch, and the bacon is thick cut and whiskey-glazed. Being right on Lake Michigan they have amazing views, especially on the patio.
3 PROXI: Sepia’s younger sibling, Proxi will undoubtedly leave you wanting more. A favorite of John Dillon, concierge at the Langham Chicago, this West Loop hot spot pays an elevated homage to international street food and is sure not to disappoint. The wine and cockail program here is no slouch, either. So come hungry and thirsty and prepare to be delighted.
2 PEQUOD’S PIZZA: Chicago is the undisputed Deep Dish capital of the world. But for Shannon Boland, chef concierge at LondonHouse Chicago, you need to head north to Lincoln Park to find her favorite pie. Pequod’s personal pan pizzas are her favorite because of all the crispy edges.
4 SABBIA: Eataly's SABBIA is Chicago’s summertime restaurant featuring coastal fare, refreshing drinks, and a caprese bar. Flor Sigaran, concierge at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, recently enjoyed a feast consisting of meatballs, seafood galore, and a very tasty grilled octopus.
Only 5 mins from the United Center.

Take a Stand Center
Stories of Survival Special Exhibition
The Take a Stand Center is absolutely not-to-be-missed. It features four interactive galleries that guide you through social justice issues, empowering you with knowledge and inspiration and reminding us all to stand against hatred in all its forms. The centerpiece is the Abe and Ida Copper Survivor Stories Experience that utilizes new technology to enable “conversations” with recorded Holocaust survivors via 3D holography. There’s truly no words to describe how impactful this experience is, and of the dozen recorded Survivors, half of them are local to Chicago.
Be the very first to lay eyes on and experience this landmark special exhibition before it tours museums across the country. Stories of Survival: Object. Image. Memory. explores the journey and fight of Survivors of the Holocaust and past genocides that have taken place around the world. Each story is told through never-before-seen personal everyday objects—like a babydoll and suitcase to a mother’s cookbook—brought to America by Survivors. Each one is paired with photographs by renowned documentarian Jim Lommasson with handwritten responses by Survivors or their family members.
With cute retro-inspired interiors, these outposts of the Los Angeles original offer up to 35 varieties of old-fashioneds, fritters and twists. Their signature pockets also come packed with flavors like peanut butter, Nutella, and Biscoff cookie butter. Do Live Music at Winter’s Jazz Club For a classy night of timeless jazz in an intimate setting that places the focus firmly on the music, this is your place. Just a stone’s throw from Chicago Line’s dock, this newer jazz club brings straightahead and classic jazz performers to the stage six night a week. Old School Italian Dining at Volare An intimate eatery offering signature dishes like chicken Vesuvio alongside customizable pasta options. Stand-outs include the house-made ricotta gnocchi, or fresh pappardelle noodles with ricotta and a light tomato sauce.

SKYDECK'S A MUST-DO CHICAGO EXPERIENCE
SNL: The Experience
Your eyes will easily jump from the medical instruments, paintings, and statues to the breathtaking Gold Coast building they are housed in. Over 7,000 medical artifacts, 600 art pieces, over 5,000 medical books, and more are housed in this 20th-Century mansion that resembles Le Petit Trianon, a French chateau on the grounds of Versailles. Here iron lungs, Peruvian skulls with holes drilled in them, hearing aids from different eras, statues of medical greats, murals depicting important moments in medical history, and more will enlighten those with or without any medical knowledge.
Live from the Museum of Broadcast Communications, it’s SNL: The Experience. Go behind the scenes at 30 Rock as you wind your way through the bi-level exhibit featuring 500 artifacts—including props, costumes, scripts, and set replicas—from the 43-year history of Saturday Night Live. Structured by each day of the week, which has a specific purpose and goal at SNL, the exhibit concludes on Saturday. It’s here you’ll find yourself standing in a complete replica of Studio 8H. Grab a seat for the monologue, musical act, and rotating sketch before posing for a photo at a remake of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Weekend Update Desk.

American Writer’s Museum President Carey Cranston shares three of his personal favorite things to do at this first-of-its-kind museum. Frederick Douglass: Agitator This special exhibit really drives home how much weight his words still carry today. It’s also special in that this year marks the 200th anniversary of his birth in addition to the 125th anniversary of the World’s Columbian Exposition. Here you can explore excerpts from Douglass’ speeches, discover his life after the civil war, and learn about the pamphlet he and Ida B. Wells distributed to protest African-American exclusion from the Columbian Exposition. Story of the Day The Mind of a Writer gallery offers a glimpse into how writers think. A favorite part of this exhibit is the Story of the Day, which encourages visitors to type their own line to a story collectively written by those visiting that day. Every morning an opening line from a memorable American book, poem, essay, or short story is selected. From there, it’s up to you to help keep the yarn spinning, line by line. Featured Works Table This interactive exhibit invites you to take the deep dive into a select library of American masterworks. For those looking to hear the story behind the story this is a must-do (whether you’re a literary geek or not). A multi-sensory experience, be prepared for unexpected surprises like hearing audio clips of William Faulkner reading his own work.
