5 FALL FESTS & EVENTS Chicago Beerhoptacular ì

By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago CULTURAL MUSTS

For 48 hours, Oct. 14-15, Open House Chicago (p.54) from the Chicago Architecture Foundation (p.52) gives the public free, exclusive access to more than 200 hidden gems and architectural landmarks that are rarely ever seen by the public. Highlights include visiting the Suite of Presidents at the Blackstone Renaissance Hotel where 12 sitting presidents have stayed, stepping inside the vault at the Chicago Board of Trade, and more across the city. Logan Square and Avondale will be making their Open House Chicago debut this year. Tucked among Open House Chicago î

Chef Concierge, Kimpton Gray Hotel

the neighborhoods’ graceful boulevards are surprising cultural venues like Stan Mansion, whose greystone front conceals an enormous ballroom, and Aloft Circus Arts, a historic church building adapted into a circus arts school. In the area’s industrial pockets, you’ll be able to see the production facilities of some of Chicago’s hottest brands, including Metropolis Coffee and Revolution Brewing. For 53 years the Chicago International Film Festival (p.54) has been in the forefront of the film world in presenting the world’s best in cinema whether it be fiction, non-fiction, or animation. From showing Martin Scorsese’s first feature film, premiering films like “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Grey Gardens,” the festival has done it all. Running Oct. 12-26, highlights include the opening night premiere of "Marshall" on Oct. 12 and a special tribute and award presentation to “Star Trek: The Next Generation” commander and a stalwart of the London and Broadway stage, Sir Patrick Stewart, on Oct. 25. CRAFT BEER LOVERS, UNITE

There’s barely enough space in Chicago to house all the breweries that call the city home and those from afar who set up shop here. Discover if 1.45 million square feet is enough at the Seventh Annual Chicago Beerhoptacular (p.54). The event will

take place on Nov. 4 at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, the massive film studios that house the productions of “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago PD,” and many feature films. The space is needed to celebrate all the craft beer in the city, region, and country with 75 brewers pouring more than 150 craft beers. In addition to the hoppy beer, attendees will enjoy food trucks, a vinyl DJ, a bicycle kegerator, and a live insult booth. HOLIDAY BEGINNINGS

As we head into November, Chicagoans don’t mind the cold as much because we’re starting the holiday season, and what better way to kick it off than the BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival (p.54) on Nov. 18. With family-friendly activities, a tree-lighting ceremony with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, performances by top musical artists, and fireworks over the Chicago River, it’s hard to find a better way to get that warm holiday feeling. One of our favorite holidays is Thanksgiving, and you can start yours with some entertainment at the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade (p.54). Ronald McDonald will lead a procession of marching bands, characters, floats, and national acts along with Teddy Turkey down State Street that will bring a smile to faces of all ages.

McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade î

Is Monroe Street the new State Street? Located in close proximity to the starstudded show "Hamilton" is Vol. 39 (p.43). An intimate cocktail bar with a library-like atmosphere, it provides the perfect backdrop for a night on the town. Experience expert bartenders crafting inventive cocktails like the “Vintage Old Fashioned”, which is made tableside via beverage cart. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: DD Proxi (p.19) DD Bonci Pizzeria (p.20) DD The Loyalist (p.36)

Quincy Jones Concierge, W Chicago Lakeshore Hotel

Experience Ronero (p.37), serving up Latin American fusion cuisine with flair. This West Loop restaurant brings flavor to Chicago in a whole new way. The food, coupled with the scene, will have you doing the merengue by the end of your meal. Don't forget to visit their new vibrant speakeasy club EscoBar, located inside the restaurant, which has the best selections of rum I've ever seen. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Elske (p.36) DD Giant (p.18) DD BLVD (p.36)

Emily Mayer Concierge, Viceroy Chicago

If you're craving one of Chicago's most sought after burgers or a caffeine pick-meup, but don't have time for the lines, check out 3 Greens Market (p.20) You can grab a Small Cheval burger or a Military Latte just like they serve at Sawada Coffee. If you're feeling like eating a bit healthier, indulge in the all-day salad bar. Need a break from emails and reports? Stop for a quick round of putt-putt or table tennis. The retro decor and ample seating offer a fun, yet sophisticated, urban retreat in River North. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

Tanta î

FEAST ON THESE 5 FAVORITES FOR FALL By Trisha Carey @CP_Chicago

Having just been named 2017’s Best Restaurant City in America by Bon Appetit means Chicago knows a thing or two about food. So, where does one go to eat in the country’s most exciting food city? Here’s a few top tables to try as picked by concierge.

Goosefoot î

SEASONAL OFFERINGS

Corporate concierge Jonathan Rettemnier recommends Goosefoot (p.17) in Lincoln Square. This BYOB spot’s cuisine features a modern take on French technique, using artisan farm products, and presented in an intimate 16-person setting. Their menu changes frequently based on the seasons and availability of products, and their Michelin star means there’s always a wait for their two seatings a night. Insider tip: They just opened an ice cream shop next door so you can get your ice cream scooped by a Michelin-starred chef! THE CHICAGO WAY

Ramon Gomez, chef concierge at The Gwen, suggests Schwa (p.37). This Wicker Park gem will undoubt Tortoise Supper Club î

kitchen to get to the restroom. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself doing shots with the chefs on your way back to the table either. EXPLORE SOMETHING NEW

Leave the passport in the safe and travel to the culinary capital of South America with a visit to Tanta (p.35). This Peruvian restaurant comes highly recommended by Timothy Myers, concierge at the Embassy Suites Lakefront. Having dined there multiple times, his favorite dishes include the Anticuchos Pulpo (octopus barbecue), any of their ceviche dishes, and for dessert, the picarones which are similar to a doughnut. “It’s vibrant and fun,” says Myers. “The restaurant is the place to be and the service has always been on point.” DINE WITH THE RAT PACK

edly surprise and delight you with its inventive, expertly prepared New American tasting menus . Want to impress your friends and be treated like a local? This restaurant is BYOB, but if you bring an extra bottle for the wickedly-talented chefs (whiskey is always a safe bet) you’ll get the royal treatment (and maybe even more than the tasting menu). Experiences here are always memorable, especially having to cut through the

really can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. For a similarly retro vibe, Toque & Bottle concierge Marilyn Eisenberg suggests Tortoise Supper Club (p.35). This cozy River North hot spot offers a special sense of nostalgia with its dark wood accented dining room and intimate setting. The owners are locals, so they know their Chicago history. While eating, enjoy caricatures of a few “Scoundrels and Rogues” who left a lasting legacy in Chicago. Prohibition is outlawed here, so feel free to sip on one of their delicious cocktails while enjoying oysters, steaks, or any of their other fabulous dishes. If you’re dining on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night, you’ll even get a side of live jazz music. Schwa î

Throw on your fedora, grab your best gal, and head back to a time where Al Capone was king and Sinatra did it his way. Shannon Boland, chef concierge at LondonHouse Chicago loves sending her guests to Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse (p.17). With a classic Chicago feel, tried and true cuisine, and impeccable service it’s sure to leave a lasting impression. The only restaurant group in the country to be awarded their own USDA Prime Certification, Boland is partial to the steak but says that you Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse ï

GIORDANO'S; M9;P1

CHICAGO’S 3 MUST-TRY LATIN AMERICAN RESTAURANTS Carnivale

Tango Sur

The lively atmosphere and colorful dining room alone at Carnivale (p.36) are a draw, but once you try any of the dishes from Chef Rodolfo Cuadro’s menu you’ll be doing shoulder shimmies in your seat. We recommend starting off with the ceviche tasting, where you can pick a selection of three. Make sure to include the mixto that uses an octopus that couldn’t taste any fresher and soaks in the poblano sauce. For your entree there is no wrong choice, but we’re partial to arrachera whose chimichurri sauce will have you licking your plate or the ropa vieja, a drool-worthy concoction of braised veal cheek, sweet plantains, malanga, aji amarilo aioli, and queso fresco.

Ask a Chicagoan to name a BYOB restaurant, and their answer will likely be Tango Sur (p.17), a longstanding Lakeview favorite. This authentic Argentine steakhouse offers a dimly lit, cozy interior complemented by flickering candlelight and, of course, tango music, which make it an ideal spot for date night. The food here is meat-centric, to say the least, with dishes such as churrasco and bife Vesuvio. If you’re not looking to chow down on red meat all night, fear not. Their empanadas are among the best in the city and they have vegetarian-friendly items as well. Insider tip: Unlike most BYOB joints, Tango Sur doesn’t charge a corkage fee. We’ll cheers to that!

90 Miles Cuban Cafe Featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” Logan Square’s 90 Miles Cuban Cafe (p.18) is the city’s most popular Cuban restaurant and with good reason. Sandwiches are also king here with a rule-following Cuban along with a pan con bistec, pan con lenchon, and even a frita cubana—can you tell Cubans like sandwiches. The frita cubana is a Cuban burger that is made of ground beef and chorizo and comes topped with the all-important shoestring fries. Don’t miss out. Insider tip: They’re BYOB, so make sure to bring a bottle of rum or wine to take advantage of their excellent mojito and sangria mixes.

730 N. Rush St.  312-951-0747 Here you can delve into a prime example of classic Chicago deep-dish pizza. With a number of locations throughout the city, it's easy to get your yearly intake of sweet, gooey cheese. $

YOLK; M7;L2

The Buzz Carnivale (p.36) is already known for their charcuterie plate, whose selections of cured meats are made in house, but did you know that that the honey accenting them is also made in house? From the hive on their rooftop garden, Chef Rodolfo is able to harvest between 60 and 80 pounds of Mother Nature’s pure sweetness.

Band of Bohemia ìï

Concierges’ weigh in with their top spots to kick back and have a wellcrafted drink right now. BREWPUB, REDEFINED

A little bit of everything for everyone can be found at Band of Bohemia (p.40), the first brewpub to ever be awarded a Michelin star. The brainchild of two former Alinea vets, this Ravenswood culinary brewhouse is the place to go for beer lovers, and also for those who don’t like beer. According to corporate concierge Rachel Luckett, it’s a perfect combination. The menu here features Band of Bohemia’s own inventive house beers, brewed with ingredients ranging from coriander and basmati rice to pear puree and the thoughtful cocktail and wine lists are not to be overlooked. Oh, and the fare is no slouch either. NO, NOT THE ACTUAL RIVER

For a fine selection of craft cocktails, elevated light bites, and a stunning view of the city that he feels oftentimes goes unappreciated, Ramon Gomez, chef concierge at The Gwen, suggests bellying up at GreenRiver (p.41). Nestled above Streeterville on the 18th floor of a

the Gold Coast’s Sparrow (p.42). A 1930s-era rum-focused cocktail bar, the environs here are as impressive as their creations. Kraemer says you’d be remiss not to try the La Florita made with Panama white rum, maraschino, lime, grapefruit, and whirled with crushed ice for a truly transportive experience. CLANDESTINE COCKTAILING

Northwestern Medical Center building, the cocktail menu here is arranged by key ingredient (i.e. juniper, rye, agave, etc.) and within each are masterfully-crafted cocktail selections which are named for a person or event in Chicago’s history. Timothy Myers, concierge at the Embassy Suites Chicago Lakefront, is also a fan, and recommends snagging a spot at the bar to watch the mixologists working their magic in preparing the cocktails. HEMINGWAY WOULD APPROVE

Harking back to the glory days of hotel lobby bars, Hotel Palomar concierge Mark Kraemer recommends GreenRiver ï

Looking to delve into an era passed? Then LondonHouse Chicago’s chef concierge Shannon Boland suggests you venture to the basement of the historic Green Door Tavern (a former speakeasy) into the subterranean cocktail lair that is The Drifter (p.40). This new cocktail lounge is brimming with turn-of-the-20th-century memorabilia. Their cocktail program offers a fun, unique twist as each drink selection is printed on a deck of tarot cards, with a new set being offered every night. What cocktail will be you enjoying tonight? Let the cards tell you. The space also plays host to a number of eclectic and eccentric live performances that run sporadically every evening.

ommends Berkshire Room (p.40). Named for the hotel that once stood on its plot, this River North hot spot is known for its boozy cocktails and boisterous, yet effectively soft and sexy, living-room-style lounge atmosphere. Here you’ll find a potent cocktail program that stands high as it probes the imbiber with a trilogy of decisions. Classic cocktails, barrelaged concoctions, and a dealer’s choice—where you choose the spirit, profile, and glassware and let the cocktailians do the rest. The Drifter ï

3 NEIGHBORHOODS TO EXPLORE By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

Make a day of it and experience these three, concierge-recommended neighborhoods.

Logan Theater ì

HYDE PARK

Timothy Myers, concierge at the Embassy Suites Lakefront, says he’s been particularly interested in Hyde Park (M5;D4) as of late. And for good reason. This South Side treasure played host to the World’s Columbian Exposition back in 1893 and today is chock-full of beautiful parks, museums, galleries, and more. Where else can you walk through a Japanese garden, see a Frank Lloyd Wright house, and then take in a view of the Chicago skyline? While there, can’tmiss places include the Museum of Science & Industry (p.49), the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere. Favorite exhibits include the U-505 German submarine and the baby chick hatchery—one of the museum’s most beloved experiences. Corporate concierge Rachel Luckett says you need to check out Promontory Point (p.53), the peninsula designed by Prairie School landscape architect Alfred Caldwell, where you’ll get a unique view of the city. She recommends Museum of Science & Industry î

experiencing it at sunset followed by dinner, drinks, and live music at The Promontory (p.17). LOGAN SQUARE

Having been a resident, The Gwen’s chef concierge Ramon Gomez is a huge fan. The perfect mix of urban and residential, he recommends bouncing into Lula Cafe (p.18) for their Pasta YiaYia, a divine creation that’s drenched in browned butter

and strewn with crumbled feta, crispy browned garlic, and then sprinkled with cinnamon (don’t knock it until you’ve tried it). He also says they have the best salmon and bagel plate in town. After, he recommends popping into the Rocking Horse (p.42) for a craft beer or whiskey before taking in a flick at the Logan Theater (p.53). ANDERSONVILLE

For corporate concierge Jonathan Rettemnier it’s about walking around Andersonville in the fall. He suggests making a day of it and popping into the shops along Clark Street while

sipping a warm latte and eating a yummy treat from A Taste of Heaven (p.17) bakery. End your excursion by stopping into Hopleaf (p.41) who he says, without a doubt, is the best spot in the neighborhood for a beer. “They've got creative Belgian inspired fare that pairs perfectly with their massive beer list,” he says. “I recommend the duck reuben paired with a Bosteels Pauwel Kwak beer.” Hotel Palomar concierge Mark Kraemer is also a fan, as there’s a bit of everything for everyone. Graphic novel fans will adore AlleyCat Comics (p.12) while those looking for vintage goods and home decor will love Brown Elephant Resale Shop (p.12) and Woolly Mammoth Antiques & Oddities (p.13). For those that want a taste of this charming neighborhood’s Swedish origins, make sure to visit the Swedish American Museum (p.49) or the family-owned Svea Restaurant (p.17) and Prohibition-era Simon's Tavern (p.42), all of which keep Andersonville's charming ethnic heritage relevant. 3 REASONS TO VISIT THE TOP MUSEUM IN CHICAGO The Art Institute of Chicago has been top ranked in the world by TripAdvisor—four years in a row For the Art, Obviously

The Photo Opportunities

It’s An Engaging Experience

The Art Institute is an encyclopedic art museum, which is a fancy way of saying that there’s a little bit of everything, from everywhere. With one million square feet of gallery space to explore there’s something for everyone. The concierge short list of must-sees include its extensive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, which is considered one of the finest in the world; the airy, light-filled Modern Wing that showcases 20th- and 21st-century art and the beloved Thorne Miniature Rooms, where dollhouse-like structures illustrate European and American homes, buildings, and interiors.

This world class institution is home to over 300,000 works of art (some of which date back to 3,500 BC). Overwhelming, right? To help narrow down the options, we asked concierges’ to pick their favorite Instagram-worthy work of art. What topped their list? Marc Chagall’s stained-glass masterpiece America Windows, Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, and of course, the epic pointillist masterpiece A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by George Seurat. While each concierge had their personal favorite, all agreed that you’d be remiss not to take a selfie with the iconic bronze lions that guard the entrance. Expert Tip: Ask your concierge about VIP tickets that let you skip the line.

Embark on an informative and fun art adventure! In addition to free guided gallery tours available daily at noon, you can download the the Art Institute of Chicago’s Official Mobile App for iOS devices (free from the App Store) for podcast-style audio tours with behind-the-scenes stories and music that transports you into the artwork. Fun fact? There’s even a new “Hamilton”-inspired audio tour in American Art. Bringing the Family? Let the kids choose their own art adventure. With the museum’s new digital interactive, JourneyMaker, your tykes can choose from eight different story lines and build a customized guide filled with activities and artful surprises for all.

Chicago’s Unofficial Mascots Made for the Art Institute of Chicago’s opening in 1893, the two bronze lions that guard the main entrance aren’t identical. Take a look and see if you can spot the differences. While they don’t have “official” names, their sculptor, Edward Kemeys, called the south lion “stands in attitude of defiance” and the north lion “on the prowl”.
