Christmas Around the World í and Holidays of Light

WINTER EVENT FAVORITES By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

We know the cold weather is not easy, but if you stick to these five pillars you’ll have the warmest, best winter imaginable in Chicago.

ZooLights ï

FOR THE FAMILY

Nothing gives you that warm feeling inside quite like spending time with the ones you love. Lincoln Park Zoo’s ZooLights (p.53) provides a perfect setting for just that. The zoo is transformed into a winter wonderland with two million lights, ice carvings, musical light shows, animal encounters, holiday crafts, and more. Just a touch south you can also head to Fifth Third Bank Winter Wonderfest (p.53) with 170,000 square feet of rides, a Chicago Blackhawks ice rink, and more family fun at Navy Pier (p.52). WARM UP WITH SOME GLÜHWEIN

While those who call Chicago home enjoy the return of the Christkindlmarket (p.53) each year, so do visitors from all over the world who come to visit this unique outdoor holiday market. As the market is a

the wooded one-mile path, you’ll discover a series of experiences that encourage you to see trees in a different light. Whether you’re looking to marvel at a grove of hemlock trees as their color transforms from green to technicolor hues or to take in a dazzling show of lights that appear to dance in the trees in time to music, it’s a must-see holiday destination.

I love going up to Skydeck (p.52) at the Willis Tower. On a clear day, I can see the glorious city skyline and even catch a glimpse of neighboring states. It is so liberating to step out on The Ledge, I feel like I am on top of the world! The Skydeck is the highest observation deck in Chicago and home to the highest public viewing area in the United States, so come visit this architectural masterpiece. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

celebration of German traditions, typical German food and drink items are sold throughout. In addition, Christkindlmarket is the ultimate outdoor Christmas shopping market, offering a huge array of fun holiday items, unique gifts—many of which are handmade by vendors—and much, much more. A SUBURBAN GEM

Fifty acres of the Morton Arboretum’s (p.54) majestic trees will glow in mesmerizing hues of blue, green, purple, and magenta all December long at Illumination (p.54). Along

Celebrating its 75th year, the Museum of Science and Industry’s (p.48) Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light (p.54) exhibit features more than 50 trees and displays, each decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s ethnic communities to reflect their diverse culture and holiday traditions. Here, you can stroll through the dazzling forest of trees, enjoy intermittent falling “snow”, and savor the performances of various dance and choral groups on the Holiday Stage. Fifth Third Bank î

Maple and Ash (p.16) is an indulgent seafood and steakhouse in the Gold Coast. The ambiance is amazing and service is top notch. My favorite is the 28-day aged ribeye and the fire roasted seafood tower is phenomenal. Before having dinner, stop by the bar to sip on delicious cocktails in a chic atmosphere. Make sure to also catch the spectacular brunch offered on Sunday. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge (p.45), a century old jazz bar with real gangster roots (think: Al Capone) offers a quintessential Chicago experience. Named with a nod to the Moulin Rouge in Paris, the Green Mill offers a true mélange of artists. From slam poetry to gypsy jazz, guests can get cozy in the vintage velvet booths or kick up their heels to some of the best swing Chicago has to offer. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

CONCIERGES’ COMFORT FOOD FAVORITES

Mon Ami Gabi ì

By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

Six concierge dish on their favorite winter comfort food and their go-to places to get it.

Kuma's Corner î

PHO

For Eric Loughlin, concierge at TheWit, it’s all about pho, a Vietnamese beef broth soup. “Those people who are telling you ramen is the best soup are no longer your friends,” he jokes. Pho comes standard with rice noodles, herbs, and your choice of meat. His recommendation is always the rare steak which will be cooked when placed in the hot broth. He suggests heading to Argyle Street in Uptown to get an authentic taste. His go-to in the area is Pho 888 (p.35) or Cafe Hoang (p.35). DUMPLINGS

Qing Xiang Yuan Dumplings (p.16) on Wentworth Avenue in Chinatown tops Kimpton Gray Hotel Concierge Miles Bertling’s list. He says you would literally have to fly to China to get something this authentic. The dumplings here are all handmade to order and come in a variety of styles and fillings. Bertling suggests pair-

metal culture and creative burgers. There are burgers with tomatillo salsa and fried chiles, burgers with Sriracha and grilled pineapple, but if you have to choose just one, go for the signature Kuma Burger: bacon, sharp cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a fried egg. It’s nothing short of burger perfection. PAN PIZZA

ing “these fluffy meat and vegetable filled heaven pillows” with a bowl of spicy hot pot. INSIDER TIP: They also offer a class on how to make dumplings, which is an experience Bertling recommends.

While Chicago’s known for its deep dish pizza, Benjamin Strawbridge, concierge at The Gwen, thinks you’d be remiss not to try the caramelized, melty cheese goodness that is Pequod’s (p.17) pan pizza. What makes it such a stand-out dish? It’s the layer of cheese that they put between the crust and the cast-iron pan it’s baked in that yields irresistibly crispy, blackened edges. Topped with their fennelflecked sausage? It can do no wrong.

Qing Xiang Yuan ì Dumplings

Pho 888 í

Classic beef bourguignon served with pappardelle noodles is Hotel Palomar Concierge Mark Kraemer’s go-to dish. So if you’re in the mood for some body-warming French bistro fare, he says you can’t beat Mon Ami Gabi (p.17). A classic brasserie located in the heart of Lincoln Park, you can warm up with options like their classic French onion soup, beef bourguignon, or steak frites. PHEASANT PIE

BURGER

When the temperature drops, it’s time to head to the West Loop and treat yourself to one of Kuma’s Corner's (p.36) legendary burgers. A favorite cold weather comfort food of Marcus Hollis, concierge at the Omni Chicago Hotel, Kuma’s has become the go-to spot for two things: heavy

BEEF BOURGUIGNON

Tortoise Supper Club í

For Shannon Boland, chef concierge at LondonHouse Chicago, it’s all about the cozy retro vibe and classic American fare at Tortoise Supper Club (p.34). From the brined-in-house Berkshire pork chop to Boland’s favorite—one of their specials, like the pheasant pie—the options here are as comforting as the well-appointed environs.

4 NEW SPOTS TO QUENCH YOUR THIRST By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

Here’s a look at some of Chicago’s newest bars and lounges that are making big blips on concierges’ radars.

The Delta ïì

In a nod to the Beatnik era of the 1950s, this luxe lounge is a favorite of Hotel Palomar Concierge Mark Kraemer for its awesome mid-century vibe and standout cocktails. From bright and vegetal sippers to smooth, herbaceous cocktails and mocktails, Kraemer says it’s hard to go wrong. Miles Bertling, concierge at The Kimpton Gray Hotel, also agrees. He recommends grabbing a seat on one of their plush couches and ordering a Deer Hunting in Paradise, a lovely concoction of amaro paired with passionfruit and garam masala. For drinks that are as artfully prepared as the museum itself, Langham Chicago’s Chef Concierge Philippe Gills recommends bellying up to the bar in Marisol, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s new restaurant and lounge. INSIDER TIP: Loughlin says their burger is one of the best in the city. Hungry late? You're in luck, the kitchen here runs a late night menu all the way until 1 a.m. (and, yes, the burger is on it!).

robust selection of vermouth (there’s seven different types of the fortified wine on the menu). THE DELTA (P.40)

A favorite of TheWit Hotel’s Concierge Eric Loughlin is The Delta, a fantastic new cocktail bar in Wicker Park featuring upscale Southern cuisine. “Remember the face that bartender gave you when you asked for a mint julep or mojito?,” he says. “Not here. The Delta's signature cocktail offerings are all smashes using everything from absinthe to

Atop the Viceroy Chicago sits Devereaux, a chic new bar and lounge with views of the Gold Coast that John Dillon, concierge at the Ritz-Carlton, describes as “beyond compare”. This swanky spot boasts glam decor circa the '40s and a well-curated lineup of libations, all featuring witty names such as Don’t Be Bitter, Julep and Not Your Mom’s Negroni. The food options include some large plates, and smaller snacks such as oysters, fries, and crudites.

Overwhelmingly, the concierge agree that this is the spot to go when the temps hit single digits. Bobbi Chiodo, chef concierge at the Loews Chicago O’Hare Hotel, says that no matter how many times she goes, she always learns or sees something new and exciting. “I love it,” she adds. Shannon Boland, chef concierge at LondonHouse Chicago agrees. “I love getting transported to another world while roaming the galleries,” she says. With plenty of art to accommodate everyone’s taste, places to dine, and their new Rodin: Sculptor and Storyteller exhibit (open now through March 2018), there’s even more reason to stay inside a bit longer and keep warm. INSIDER TIP: On Thursdays they are open late, so you can stay toasty and explore even more. FIELD MUSEUM (P.48)

It may be frightful outside, but it’s delightful inside the Field Museum. With enough exhibits to keep you exploring all day, Eric Loughlin, concierge at theWit Hotel, highly recommends the Grainger Hall of Gems. As a self-proclaimed “budding rock collector” in his youth, he loves

Home to 32,000 animals from various aquatic environments, this cultural gem is sure to get you in the right frame of mind. Susan Wolf, concierge at the Hilton Suites Chicago Magnificent Mile loves seeing all of the sea creatures as it makes her feel as she’s in a warmer climate. Here you can learn all about the Great Lakes and the inhabitants that call it home, watch sharks swim along a reef, and even catch a dolphin show! It’s a can’t-miss experience that the whole family will enjoy. MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY (P.48)
