ä J ulmarknad Christmas Bazaar

FOUR FESTIVE FÊTES By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago WICKER PARK Running Dec.7-8 between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., Division Street (M2) between Ashland Avenue and Leavitt Street is transformed into Do-Division Holiday (p.44). The free, family-friendly event promises to give holiday shoppers a taste of what makes West Division Street so distinct. At the core of DoDivision Holiday are the independent, locally-owned businesses that line the street’s notoriously wide sidewalks. Along with offering deep discounts, dozens of shops, restaurants, salons and boutiques come alive with seasonal cheer exclusively for the event. They will feature everything from holiday window decorations and live tunes to complimentary beverages

Enjoy a cup of high-quality coffee at La Colombe Torrefaction (p.30). The baristas are friendly, passionate and take a personal interest in giving the best coffee experience to each guest. year at the neighborhood’s Swedish American Museum (p.42) and offers charming handmade ornaments and Scandinavian antiques. For a traditional celebration, make sure to experience the St. Lucia Festival of Lights (p.44) on Dec. 13, which begins with a torch-lit procession down the sidewalks of Clark Street at 4:45 p.m. HYDE PARK/WASHINGTON PARK This year will mark the 47th annual Kwanzaa (Dec. 26-Jan.1) holiday, and in Chicago there’s no better way to steep yourself in African American history than at the DuSable Museum (p.40). The first of its kind in the U.S., DuSable shares the stories of the struggles and triumphs of African Americans throughout U.S. history. From well-known leaders to those unsung heroes who paved the way for equality through history, DuSable is a local cultural treasure.

THE LOOP Nestled in the heart of the Loop, Macy’s on State Street (p.45) embodies the yuletide season with its annual holiday celebrations (through Jan. 5), a memorable tradition that goes back more than 100 years. From the 45-foot tall Great Tree in the historic Walnut Room to its infamous, animated Window Displays, nothing says ‘tis the season in Chicago quite like a visit to this landmark site.

â Tanta

CHICAGO:

COURSE BY COURSE By Shannon Boland @MsShanBo Braving a Chicago winter is a courageous act and you deserve to be rewarded! Where better to do that than at some of the city’s finest establishments. The holidays are time to indulge in decadent dishes while New Year’s Resolutions are time to start behaving. Here’s a list of some of my favorite "naughty and nice" picks for this winter, course by course! 1ST COURSE: APPETIZERS We’re going to start nice and easy (like Ike and Tina Turner - "Proud Mary", anyone?) with a Chicago staple: Blackbird (p.30) has been the cornerstone of the West Loop well before the neighborhood became the bustling restaurant mecca it is today. Their Salad of Endives is the perfect way to start any meal. From a

ä Balena

ä Tanta

classic to a newcomer, Tanta (p.28) is Peruvian food at its finest. New to the cuisine and not sure where to begin? Well you’re in good hands with Tanta’s world-renowned chef, Gastón Acurio. The Cebiche Tasting is the best introduction to the tastes of Peru and is a refreshing three-style sampling. We’ve been nice, now it’s time to get naughty! The perfect place to start is a down-home country hangout right in the center of the city! Bub City (p.26) is the feel good, boot-scooting spot by local restaurateur brothers, RJ and Jerrod Melman. Their Giddy Up Fries are waffle fries smothered with cheddar cheese and barbequed pork. Need we say more? Looking for another naughty spot to warm up from the

15

ä Au Cheval

chilly temperatures? Slide into the seashell Scallop and Crab Motoyaki at Kabocha (p.30). It’ll have you wanting to bathe in its rich, creamy ponzu aioli. 2ND COURSE: ENTREES For the nice stops on our entrée tour, how about pastas? And these aren’t your grandmother’s spaghettis either! First, is the Conill Amb Castanyes at Iron Chef Jose Garces’ South Loop tapas restaurant Mercat a la Planxa (p.28). These delicate, rabbit-filled dumplings will simply melt in your mouth. Another pasta favorite is found at Lincoln Park’s Balena (p.18). Perfect as a pre- Steppenwolf Theatre (p. 47) dining option, the Orecchiette is a warm (yet light) dish with lemon and kale. Added bonus? Their wood burning stoves keep this

place warm and toasty all winter long! For our naughty entrees, let’s get meaty! Since 1941, the staff at Gene and Georgetti’s (p.27) has always impressed. For seven decades, their Lamb Chop has been one of the most succulent cuts in town! For a more casual but not less carnivorous option, try the Cheeseburger at Au Cheval (p.30). Voted one of the best by every burger reviewer around, use these concierge tips: They don’t take reservations so go early, the single burger is actually a double, and everything is better with an egg on it! 3RD COURSE: DESSERT Still have room for dessert? For a nice approach, you can’t go wrong with either of these Chicago Classics: The mile-high Strawberry Shortcake at Gibson’s Bar & Steakhouse (p.16) or the delightful Tiramisu at Harry Caray’s (p.27). Looking for something a little more sinful? Try the Sicilian Iris at The Purple Pig (p.26). This indulgent dessert features fried brioche filled with ricotta & chocolate chips. If you like more salty than sweet, hit GT Fish and Oyster (p.27) for their Salted Caramel Tart.

leandro traveled 5,000 miles to bring you his lamb chops. As you can imagine, a few stories came along for the ride. The Southern Brazilian open-fire cooking method called “churrasco” has been handed down for centuries, with each new generation of gauchos adding their own touch of culture and refinement. Taste that tradition today at Fogo De Chão. Gaucho chefs like Leandro prepare, cook and serve a variety of grilled meats. Enjoy tender steaks, sausage, chicken, lamb, ribs, and Leandro’s favorite, a traditionally-seasoned sirloin called “picanha.”

M1

Navigating Chicago may seem daunting, but the city was set up on a simple grid system with State Street dividing east and west coordinates and Madison Street dividing north and south. Miles are divided into segments of 800, so for example, Chicago Avenue at 800 north is one mile north of Madison Street. If you prefer to ride rather than walk, taxis are plentiful and public transportation, especially the “L” train, is easy and inexpensive to use. The “L” also runs to both airports. See the listings below for more transportation options in the Windy City.

FESTIVE LIBATIONS By Sean Patrick Wagner @SPDoubleYou The crafted cocktail is seeing a resurgence in popularity in recent time—especially here in Chicago— and what better chance to check out some hot spots than with your family and loved ones this holiday season (so they can pick up the tab, of course). Celebrate by sipping on some of the coolest, most sought-after concoctions in the Third Coast’s newest and most popular libation stations. THREE DOTS AND A DASH The Renaissance of Rum is happening in a basement. Now, I know what you’re going to say: “I don’t like rum… or basements.” Well that’s because the last time you drank rum in a basement it was likely at a college house party. So let’s rethink rum and basements all together and embrace the gloriousness of Paul McGee and Lettuce Entertain You’s Three Dots and a Dash (p.36). This post-WWII themed

tiki bar hit Chicago in late summer and has been red hot ever since. There’s no better place to escape the norm of River North, and bask in the warmth of a Tahitian sunset, than in this rum-focused, palate-cleansing paradise. Classic cocktails and innovative tiki-style drinks in signature, souvenir glassware make Three Dots and a Dash authentically awesome. Enter through the alley and prepare to board the ship as you navigate their “treasure map” of a menu in search of rum-soaked, buried treasure. Enjoy a sharable option such as “Zombie Punch”, the bar’s eponymous selection, or the “Jungle Bird”. THE BERKSHIRE ROOM Named for the hotel that once stood on its plot, The Berkshire Room (p.34) is making noise in River North for its boozy cocktails and boisterous, yet effectively soft and sexy, living room-style lounge atmosphere. Ben Schiller’s potent cocktail program stands high as he probes the imbiber with a trilogy of decisions. Classic

cocktails, barrel-aged concoctions, and a Dealer’s Choice: where you choose the spirit, profile and glassware and let the cocktailians do the rest. Highlights include the bourbonintensive “Weston”, complemented with pipe tobacco and Chicago’s own Dark Matter coffee essence; or your father’s new favorite, the “Continuous Negroni”, a classic take on the standard that’s aged in a Pappy Van Winkle barrel. The only thing missing from this luscious dungeon of swank is a mysteriously-dressed gentleman lurking in the corner… and a haze of cigar smoke. JIMMY CHICAGO Jimmy (p.34), seductively lit and tucked inside The James Hotel, is Chicago’s little secret gem. This 39seat haven holds its curated sprits and house-made ingredients in as high regard as its clientele. A scenester’s scene, Jimmy boasts a playful, “Mad

Men”-esque ambiance coupled with the vibrancy of a modern day Playboy Mansion. Paying homage to the 1970s, Thomas Schlesser—three-time recipient of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant Design—has propelled the wood paneling interior and lavish upholstery through a gravely-guarded set of metal curtains to ostentatious proportions. Once inside, sip artisan cocktails like the “Blueberry Thrill” (Journeyman Bilberry Gin, Blueberry Lavender Jam, Canton Liqueur, Fresh Lemon and Egg White) or their take the classic “Rusty Nail” (Yamazaki 12year Scotch, Drambuie, Violet Ice and Lavender Bitters).
