WHITE SOX GAME DAY CHECKLIST A native South Sider and diehard White Sox fan, this concierge offers up his tips for how to experience Bridgeport like a local.

By Colin Bertling, Concierge, Hotel Palomar Gear Up I like to see if the Engine 29 firehouse on 35th and Lowe is selling Chicago Fire Department/Sox t-shirts. Usually, if the garage door is open, you can inquire. But don’t pester them if it’s not as they have more important business to attend to. (It does make for a great souvenir, though.) Grandstand Sports is another great spot to gear up before game time. Pre-Game Bites Maxwell Street Depot is a favorite for a pre-game Polish or Chicago-style dog. New this year? They’ll also be serving pizza next door. Another standby is 35th Street Red Hots for hand-cut French fries. While their hot dogs and Polishes are great, too, the fried shrimp are phenomenal! Where to Drink Before Experience the Bridgeport sports bar scene a few blocks North of the ballpark at Rocky’s. Their back beer garden is a great place to relax and enjoy some food and drinks with friends before the game. If you’re looking for small-batch local beers in a hip setting, then make sure to check out Marz Community Brewing Company, a short jaunt West from the field. Prefer to pre-game in the park? Hunker down in the Craft Kave in the right field bullpen area. Favorite Thing to Eat at the Game

GUARANTEED RATE FIELD, HOME OF THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX.

A

If it were acceptable to get a plate of grilled onions, that would clearly be my choice, but I will just settle for extra on my grilled Polish! The elotes from Corn off the Cobb is not to be missed, it’s perfectly spicy, sweet, and creamy! Post Up, Post-Game

Photo Courtesy of the Chicago White Sox

Located just outside of Gate 5, stop into ChiSox Bar & Grill for some pulled pork nachos before heading home or venture North, just past the historic Park District field house, to Cork & Kerry at the Park for an authentic South Side Irish pub vibe.

A CHAMPIONSHIP DAY IN WRIGLEY

By Diane Martinez, Concierge, Palmer House Hilton

This die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, and concierge, shares her insights on the best places to pre- and post-game in this iconic neighborhood.

The Friendly Confines If traveling to the game via the Red Line get off at the Belmont stop and enjoy a waffle or Swedish pancake breakfast at Ann Sather as the ballpark is a short ten minute walk from there. Before the game, be sure to stop by The Sports Corner Bar & Grill across from Wrigley Field or Vines on Clark (next door to the Cubby Bear) for some awesome Bloody Marys. If you weren’t full yet, head to nearby Las Mananitas on Halsted Street and fuel up with some tasty chilaquiles before heading inside. Go Cubs, Go! Not really hungry after having indulged in the awesome new menu items offered at the ballpark? Go shopping! After the game, you can find some of the best Cubs souvenirs at Clark Street Sports, the little shop on the North side of the street as you walk back to the Addison Red Line stop. For unique, non-baseball souvenirs make sure to stop by Yesterday. It is one of the oldest memorabilia shops in the city. Let’s Play Two Hungry after shopping? There’s more to enjoy than just pizza around Wrigley Field! From the little Mexican restaurant El Burrito Mexicano (just past the Red Line on Addison Street) to great burgers at Rockit Burger Bar (just North of the ballpark), there’s no shortage of post-game dining options. One of my favorite Chicago-style hot dogs can be found at Wrigleyville Dogs on Clark Street, across the street from The Metro and Smart Bar, which I recommend you check out if you’re in the mood for some great live music or dancing. WRIGLEY FIELD Get an insider’s look at this historic American landmark that has enchanted baseball fans for a century on a Wrigley Field Tour.

Q Photo Credit: Stephen Green

And, on the way back to the Belmont Red Line stop, enjoy some Home Run Inn Pizza, a South Side favorite, that recently opened a restaurant at the corner of Sheffield and Belmont.

EXPLORE CHICAGO'S GANGSTER PAST Here’s a look at 4 fascinating spots you’ll see with Chicago Crime Tours. By Amber Holst

Biograph Theater

North Side Speakeasies

Learn the story behind why this Chicago landmark is notorious as the place bank robber John Dillinger was gunned down by FBI agents in 1934 after being sold out by the “Woman in Red”. Step into the alley where it all went down and get the real story from Chicago’s resident experts.

Currently there are 3,000 registered liquor licenses in Chicago. Back in the day, there were 10,000 speakeasies. How’s that for context? You’ll learn about Halligan’s pub, operated by Bugs Moran, and another speakeasy that was across the street at this infamous Lincoln Park intersection.

St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

Jewelers’ Building

While the actual building where it happened was torn down in the late ‘60s, you can get your “I was there” shot at this next stop. It was here that five north side mobsters from Moran’s North Side gang, a mechanic and an unlucky optician, were gunned down by four of Al Capone's men — two of whom were dressed as cops.

Once the tallest building outside of New York this architectural gem featured the nation's first high-rise parking garage that included an elevator for cars so jewelry dealers would never have to step outside their vehicle. The tower is distinctive for its rooftop dome, which housed Al Capone’s personal speakeasy: the Stratosphere Lounge.

Ask your concierge to book your tour.

4 MUST-TRY BURGERS We dare you not to sink your teeth into these elevated takes on the American classic. By Trisha Carey

AU CHEVAL

Whisk

Au Cheval

Kuma’s Corner

Lockdown Bar & Grill

A relaxed and rustic, industrialchic spot in Ukrainian Village, Philippe Gills, Chef Concierge at the Langham Hotel, recommends the House Burger at Whisk. What he refers to as a "cheat day" burger, it's an 8-ounce grass-fed burger topped with chihuahua cheese, chipotle mayo, guacamole, and tortilla strips. "That's why I call it that," he says.

You know when you take a bite of a burger and the bun falls apart? Yeah, we hate that too. Which is exactly why Kyle Francsis, concierge at the RitzCarlton, recommends the one at Au Cheval. Their burger comes standard with with two patties and cheese but he recommends getting the thick cut bacon and the fried egg as well! The best part? The bun stays intact.

Known for their heavy metal-inspired theme, Kuma’s also has a reputation for their burgers. Brian Lopez, concierge at Bloomingdale’s, loves the Lair of the Minotaur. “Named after one of Chicago’s local metal bands, the burger is deliciously simple, but features a boozy twist since it’s topped with slices of bourbon–infused pear,” he says.

Luis Torres, concierge at Trump International Hotel & Tower, suggests visiting Lockdown Bar & Grill in Ukrainian Village for an unforgettable food experience. “My go-to is their Punk Bitch burger that comes with Swiss, prosciutto, and a garlic mustard aioli. Add on a fried egg and avocado? It is what dreams are made of,” he says.

YOLK’S TEST KITCHEN Be the First to Experience This New Concept By Amber Holst

The Concept Located right off the beautiful 606 Trail in Bucktown, this recipe-testing kitchen brings a new breakfast twist to the neighborhood. Here, diners get to play a part in sampling wish-list concepts while enjoying unfettered access to the culinary creative process. What may wind up on menus at Yolk’s seven area locations? You get to be a judge.

Coffee Bar Unlike traditional Yolk restaurants, the layout of this concept is different. In addition to a seated dining experience, guests can enjoy a full coffee bar and grab-and-go items for those doing the trail. Complete with a space to work, and even a full bar, the test kitchen model carries over here, too, enabling partners like Metropolis Coffee to product test their latest and greatest.

5 Reasons You Need to Experience Chicago Chop House By Amber Holst

For the History Situated in a landmark brownstone from 1897, Chicago’s history is framed on every wall of this legendary eatery, including the city’s only complete portrait set of every Chicago mayor (not even City Hall can boast that honor). Complementing the experience, the veteran staff here are practically experts on this place’s history. It’s a Meat Mecca With 26 cuts of meat on the menu, this icon is home to one of the last blade saws in the city and does all of their butchery in-house. Looking for a different cut? No problem. If it fits in the broiler, they’ll cook it. So far they’ve managed to fit a 100-ounce cut in there. Perfect Pairings

Your Voice Matters To round out the experience guest are invited to leave their feedback on what they loved (or didn’t) on a giant chalkboard wall. A fun and informal way to get good honest feedback, it also doubles as a perfect Instagram photo opp. Did you love those jet black crepes with pulled duck you tested? Let them know!

Pair your meal with a glass or bottle from their award-winning, international wine list that includes more than 650 selections from 350 different wine makers. Looking to splurge? Why not opt for a vertical tasting? Their Seafood’s No Slouch Start out with their jumbo shrimp cocktail. Matthew McCahill, the owner, is an alumni of the legendary (though now defunct) Nick’s Fishmarket. He’s one of the only people that has their old cocktail sauce recipe and has revamped the one here, making it cult-status worthy. Irish Influences Sure, there’s green walls and a bar on every floor, Irish butter, and one heck of a stuffed baked potato. But the real gem here is the Irish Coffee. The owner drew his inspiration from San Francisco’s Buena Vista Cafe. It’s really the best we’ve had in Chicago.

Ramon Gomez, chef concierge at The Gwen, highly recommends The Bad Apple. “Their burgers are the best in town,” he says. Bonus? They are family friendly! When you’re done there, he suggests walking a few blocks north to continue the apple theme and grab a cider at The Northman, one of Chicago’s first cider bars.

Lakeview When you’re in Lakeview make sure to check out Wilde. It’s one of Rebecca Starodub, concierge at the Radisson Blu Aqua’s, favorite spots. Bridgeport

Whether you’re headed to Bridgeport to catch a White Sox game or just want to check out the local flavor, Philippe Gills, chef concierge at The Langham, recommends you check out Duck Inn. A Michelin rated restaurant housed in a pre-prohibition era tavern, they offer a retro vibe alongside farm-to-table cuisine.

Wicker Park Known for its local hipster culture and tons of great food options, Wicker Park is a mecca for foodies. Christina O’Connor, concierge with AXA Assistance, suggests visiting Dove’s Luncheonette for some Southern-inspired Mexican fare. Playing Chicago soul and blues music from the ‘60s and ‘70s, Dove’s pays homage to the diners and watering holes of bygone eras.

4 SPOTS FOR MIND-BLOWING MEALS By Meredith Quill

HE T PURPLE PIG

A

The Purple Pig

Mott Street

A favorite of Rebecca Starodub, concierge at the Radisson Blu Aqua, this spot combines flavors in such creative ways that it is always an adventure when you dine there. “Their salt roasted beets are always a must-order,” she says. “The food is always beautifully presented, and if you snag a bar seat you can watch the culinary magic happen.”

The communal tables fit almost too well with the super-sharable Koreaninfluenced, funky American fare at this Wicker Park gem. Recommended by InterContinential Chicago concierge Douglas Pickett, this spot cooks up a little bit of everything. “After all,” he says. “Who doesn't need kimchi on their burger?”

Publican Quality Meats

Giant

Gwendolyn Ramsey, concierge at Trump International Hotel & Tower, loves this Fulton Market restaurant as it evokes a sense of Old World charm. “This restaurant sort of embodies both Chicago and Chef Paul Kahan,” she says. “It oozes hard-work yet is humble, balances creativity with simplicity, that’s what you taste and feel when you dine here.”

The latest from celebrated Chef John Vincent (of Lula Cafe O.G. fame), this Logan Square spot is Viceroy Chicago concierge Emily Mayer’s top pick. “Just wait until you see how how tiny that kitchen is!” she says. “They make delicious house-made pastas and fresh, thoughtful dishes in a kitchen that is smaller than many restaurants' walk-in coolers. It’s remarkable”

CONCIERGES’ REVEAL THEIR WOULD-BE LAST MEAL REQUESTS By Amber Holst

Shannon Boland CHEF CONCIERGE, LONDONHOUSE CHICAGO

Brian Lopez CONCIERGE, BLOOMINGDALE’S

“I would go for The Sicilian Iris from Purple Pig. It’s the best dessert in town. Warm, sugary, and pure chocolate decadence!”

“Sausage and green pepper thin crust from Pizano's. I'm Chicago-born and raised, and no one tops our pizza selection. Deep dish is too filling sometimes, and Pizano's does thin crust right.”

Diane Martinez CONCIERGE, PALMER HOUSE HILTON “The Shrimp Fra Diavolo from Armand’s Victory Tap. It’s a generous portion with big shrimp and tasty diavolo sauce.”

Bobby Gonzalez CHEF CONCIERGE, KIMPTON GRAY HOTEL

Ramon Gomez CHEF CONCIERGE, THE GWEN HOTEL

“Portillo’s combo with sweet and hot peppers, a side of cheese fries, and a challis of Half Acre Daisy Cutter. Oh yeah, and a Chicago style hot dog for dessert.”

“Fried chicken from Hienie’s on the Southeast Side. It’s chicken perfection. Perfectly seasoned with that desired crisp-crunch equilibrium. Slathered in their orange hot sauce? Doesn’t get any better.”

Douglas Pickett CONCIERGE, INTERCONTINENTAL CHICAGO “I’d have the skate wing entree and the escargot from Mon Ami Gabi… they are both fabulous.”

Gwendolyn Ramsey TRUMP INTERNATIONAL HOTEL & TOWER “I’d go for a light meal and yummy soup and opt for the shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and miso soup from Shunju Sushi.”

Luis Torres CONCIERGE, TRUMP INTERNATIONAL HOTEL & TOWER “I’d pick Oiistar's Oiimen ramen bowl. First off, because it's huge; and secondly, I could live in that broth.”

Emily Mayer CONCIERGE, VICEROY CHICAGO “The ‘deluxe’ focaccia from Avec with taleggio cheese, ricotta, truffle oil and fresh herbs. It is just so decadent.”

John Dillon CONCIERGE, RITZ-CARLTON “The perfect bite of tenderness, fat, and flavor, I’d go for the Wagyu ribeye cap from Steak 48. It was the best steak I have ever had.”

Kyle Francsis CONCIERGE, RITZ CARLTON “I’d have to go for the Puff daddy burger from Kimski. It is a featured item on Wednesday and is a burger patty between two pizza puffs with all the burger fixings. Instant heart attack.”

Rebecca Starodub CONCIERGE, RADISSON BLU AQUA HOTEL “Truffle ricotta toast from Acanto. Perfect crusty bread that’s topped with truffle ricotta, prosciutto, and then drizzled with honey to finish. The perfect blend of sweet and savory.”

Only 5 mins from the United Center.

SECOND CITY

5 FUN, FACT-FILLED TOURS

By Amber Holst

By Meredith Quill

Concierges agree, this crown jewel of comedy is a must-do Chicago experience.

Chicago Helicopter Experience After you’ve seen the city on street level head to the sky. John Dillon, concierge at The Ritz-Carlton, says CHE offers a unique perspective on Chicago as you take off from their private downtown heliport, fly along Lake Michigan, head north to Wrigley Field and then back.

DO THE 4 P.M. MATINEE Come see where it all began by taking in a matinee performance of The Best of The Second City. From the comedy institution that launched the careers of Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell and more comes the next generation of the world’s best sketch comedy and improvisation talent.

DINNER AND DRINKS

Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours Jan Viscum, concierge at Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile, is a fan because it’s fun and offers a great way to cover a lot of area in a short time. There are the traditional architecture, park, lakefront, and neighborhood tours to choose from.

Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. For a good overview of the city why not go on a hop-on hop-off bus tour? Joan Hohs, concierge at MILA Chicago, likes Chicago Trolley noting that the docents are friendly and knowledgeable and there’s 13 stops across the city that you can hop on and off as much as you want.

Chicago Detours Mark Kraemer, concierge at the Hotel Palomar, is a fan of their Loop Interior Architecture Walking Tour. With the majority of the tour taking place inside it is perfect for discovering the beauty of the Loop’s lobbies, corridors, and unique pedway system.

Named for the year of Second City's founding, 1959 Kitchen & Bar provides tempting pre- or post-show drinks and noshes.

SNAP A SELFIE WITH EGON There’s no shortage of straight-toInstagram-worthy memorabilia, but concierges are biased toward the bust of late Second City alum Harold Ramis. Fun fact: the bronze likeness made a cameo in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot.

The Barrel Run Flor Sigaran, concierge at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, admits that it’s just as much fun to visit the breweries as it is “to ride in the larger than life Barrel bus and surprise passersby at each historic or unique bar.” They offer three brewery tours and each one stops at three different sets of breweries. You’ll savor every drop.

MAKE IT A DOUBLE FEATURE At 8 p.m. find out why critics and comedy lovers are raving about the newest Second City show, She the People, written and performed entirely by women.

CHICAGO’S BEST BREWPUBS 5 Concierge dish on their favorite places to belly up for some local brews. By Jaxon Gomez

Marcus Hollis

Shannon Boland

Caitlin Davy

Emily Mayer

Erik O’Brien

Judson Corrie

Not far from McCormick Place nestled along Chicago's historic Motor Row stretch you'll find the aptly-named Motor Row Brewing. This hip spot boasts a plethora of hop-friendly beer options on tap, my favorite of which is the crisp Out of the Loop IPL. Don’t miss out on sampling their seasonal small-batch beers, either.

Located on the near South Side, Baderbräu is a cool microbrewery decked out with street art. Beers here are Chicago biased, boasting names like South Side Pride or the Chicago Pilsner (Boland’s favorite). “It’s crisp and light, making it easily drinkable,” she says. “The food here is amazing, too!”

“Pilsen’s Moody Tongue is an excellent alternative to some of the more popular breweries like Revolution or Goose Island, with a unique selection of rotating craft beers,” she says. “Their tasting room is a bit off the beaten path, but it is beautiful and inviting.” INSIDER TIP: The only food they serve is chocolate cake and oysters.

Ravenswood’s Band of Bohemia is the first-ever Michelin-starred brewpub. Here you’ll find great fare alongside fantastic beers, all of which boast a culinary sensibility. “It’s fancy, but comfortable,” she ways. “Make sure to order the beer flight! Why try one when you can try them all?”

What he best describes as “whimsical”, O’Brien recommends the Lagunitas Chicago TapRoom. Inside, you can pull up to the bar or snag a spot at one of the picnic tables to imbibe an expanded Lagunitas lineup featuring stand-by’s and super seasonal suds. The TapRoom is open Wednesday through Sunday,

“This Hyde Park newcomer offers the rare combination of both tasty craft beers and bar fare that warrants a visit by itself, he says. “Jolly Pumpkin focuses on sours, but they've enlisted a full roster of exciting collaborations and none more so than with North Peak Brewing. Their Murky is a juicy and hazy oat IPA I could drink all day.”

Out & About with Concierge By Amber Holst 1 Bellemore John Patrick Dillon, concierge at the Ritz Carlton Chicago recommends Bellemore’s Cure What Ails You cocktail featuring George Dickel No. 8 Whiskey, bonded apple brandy, cynar, and fenugreek. For those who enjoy whiskey, he says you will find it to be perfectly flavorful and smooth. 2 Margeaux Brasserie What Rebecca Starodub, concierge at the Radisson Blu Aqua, loves most about the Loveable Trixter (aside from its name) is how the tartness of the rhubarb is perfectly balanced by the raspberries and champagne which gives is just the right amount of sweetness. 3 Cruz Blanca Brewery & Taquería Kyle Francsis, concierge at the Ritz Carlton Chicago, says the CDMX German Pils at this Mexican-influenced brewpub is bright and boasts a delicate, fruity German hop aroma that is balanced by a smooth, clean, and soft bitter finish. Pair this with some Oaxaca-inspired tacos? You’ve got yourself one heck of a great lunch.

4 The Aviary Luis Torres, concierge at Trump International Hotel & Tower, had the Loaded to the Gunwalls cocktail. The drink—with pineapple, hazelnut, and Batavia Arrack—comes in a mace-scented glass bottle with a model ship floating inside. A single, tapered candle is lit and placed underneath the bottle to let the smoke and aromas develop before being served. 5 Nico Osteria Gloria Leverence, concierge at Nordstrom, loved The Gilder cocktail. Made with CH vodka that is shaken with coconut, lime, and prickly pear sorbet before being finished off with prosecco she said it was perfectly sweet, but not overly done, and went down smoothly. 6 The Dearborn Shannon Boland, chef concierge at LondonHouse Chicago, says The Dearborn’s warm and inviting space in the Theatre District is perfect for grabbing a pre- or post-performance drink. Their wide variety of bourbon and whiskey make for a great nightcap.

3 REASONS WHY GARRETT'S IS CHICAGO'S UNOFFICIAL SNACK OF CHOICE By Amber Holst It’s a Chicago Tradition Since 1949, Chicagoans have been lining up to get their Garrett Popcorn fix and leaving the home-grown popcorn shop with cheddar coated fingers and bags of goodness that will undoubtedly be empty before they even get back home.

World Famous Garrett Mix®

It’s Handcrafted Fresh

It’s the perfect combination of sweet and savory. The Garrett signature mix was born over 65 years ago from customers who would habitually order one bag of caramel, one bag of cheddar, and a third empty bag (so they could mix it themselves). They also offer fun, seasonal rotations of limited time recipes.

The delicious aroma wafting around each shop probably gives it away, but Garrett popcorn is prepared fresh all day, every day. Each small batch begins with a proprietary blend of non-GMO kernels which their cooks hand stir in signature copper kettles according to secret family recipes.
