“What’s hot (or not), Concord Key Club?

It is officially the holiday season! I know we are trying our best to keep ourselves warm and cozy during these freezing times but, just you wait, we are going to get the ball rolling very soon with… ELECTIONS SEASON!!!

Passing this member recruitment and spirit season, we are now shifting our focus onto who is going to step forward as leaders for the next term. I am sad to say that the 2022-2023 term is slowly coming to an end, but I am excited to see which of us Concord Red Devils will continue this club’s legacy.

If you are interested, make sure to show up and SHOW OUT! Don’t be shy of stepping up and putting yourself out there! Who knows? You might even be nominated for a position…

That being said, I hope you all enjoy this month’s edition of THE RED DEVIL REPORT!”

Hello again Key Club!

Wow, we are already approaching the new year! Concord High's Key Club has achieved so much in just this first semester term and I expect so many more achievements in the coming years :) For those reading who are not a member yet, considering officially joining Key Club in the new year!

The theme of this month’s newsletter is gingerbread! Despite never making or decorated gingerbread during the holiday season, I still love how they look. And hopefully once our break starts, I will be able to make a batch of homemade gingerbread cookies! I also plan on spending most of my break recovering and relaxing from the recent stresses of the winter season. I hope your break is just as restful!

In this edition, I’ll be covering the club’s most recent events as well as the recent division-wide events. This is Ysabelle reporting to you for the month of December :]

Every Thursday during lunch, come join us in Mrs. Yahya's room (rm #206). Our weekly meetings serve to inform members of upcoming events, recap previous service events, as well as provide additional Key Club news. Please feel free to bring along a friend to our weekly club meetings! The board members would like to express how amazing it has been to see so many new people at each meeting. We apologize for the lack of seating during our lunch period, but I hope we continue this enthusiasm of having so many student attend these meetings! Hope to see you soon :)

Each school year at Concord High School, there are two events dedicated to clubs. During the fall/winter season, one event is called “Fall Fest,” where our club participates and thrives at! On Friday, November 18th, Key Club’s table sold earl grey milk tea, $7 with boba and $6 without. So much appreciation to the students and members who bought boba at Fall fest, it greatly helps support our club! Again, there was a strong demand for Key Club's boba and we sold out very quickly!

On Saturday, November 19th from 4:00 pm - 7:30 pm at Concord High School held the November Division Council Meeting (DCM)! At this meeting, the Division organized a potluck, gratitude card making, and fulfilled the DLT dares, all alongside discussing the Key Club events from the last month.

For this “Devilsgiving” (which was Charlie Brown themed!), clubs from across our 26 North Division participated in a potluck. Each club was assigned specific foods, drinks, and/or utensils to bring and serve at this event. Additionally, attendees were to bring their Covid waivers and those who did not bring items for the potluck were to bring a $5 entrance fee. During the “gratitude card making” portion of this event, attendees were to show gratitude to loved ones like family, friends, teachers, and even Key Club members! Nearing the end of the DCM, the DLT board fulfilled their DLT Dares of dumping water over their heads in the freezing winter cold!

On Thursday, December 8th from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, members of Concord High’s Key Club and College Scholarship Federation (CSF) participated in the club’s first college field trip of the year at the University of California Berkeley!

On this trip, members from both Key Club and CSF went on a self-guided tour across the campus, heading to specific locations that aligned with the majors and areas that members were interested in. Members explored the various libraries and lecture halls to the surrounding food spots and shopping outlets! This was definitely a memorable trip, especially considering the UC Berkeley students who also attended the trip and gave great advice about the culture surrounding the school.

Keep in mind that Key Club and CSF are attempting to organize a second college trip sometime in the future, and hopefully many more in the coming years. We thank all those who made this trip possible, without the help of teachers, advisors, the clubs’ presidents (Key Club: Tommy Nguyen and CSF: Abhiram Mokkapati), as well as the many generous donations, this trip would not have been possible. Further appreciation and gratitude to the members and chaperones who participated and cooperated by respecting the itinerary as well as Bart and Berkeley, you all made Key Club and CSF proud! Please keep up this behavior inside and outside of Concord High: respect others and their property, pick up trash, and stay hydrated :)

For those who are considering joining Concord High’s Key Club or CSF, please do as there are so many opportunities available, such as this trip and much more, open to you just by joining!

“The trip to UC Berkeley was super fun! We toured their huge campus, went into the buildings, and saw an overview of the school.”

”The field trip to the University of California was super fun!! Everything was really well organized and all the buildings we visited were pretty and interesting! I was with Madi and Diana the entire time and we vlogged for the majority of the time. For lunch, we ate at Dumpling Hours and the food was really good. Afterward, we went to a merch store and looked at the clothes!! Overall the Bart ride was surprisingly comfortable, all the members were nice, and I felt safe the entire time.”

“It was a fun and relaxing trip to take with your friends and experience Bart and Berkeley. I got to talk and get to know more people in the club and have a nice walk around UC Berkeley’s campus with perfect weather. It was a fun trip to take your mind off things.”

On Friday, December 2nd from 4:30 pm - 8:30 pm at Todos Santos Plaza was the city of Concord’s annual “Tree Lighting Event.” At this event, our local Kiwanis Club hosted the annual horse and carriage rides as well as the tree lighting. Volunteers at this event were across from Concord, Clayton Valley, and Mount Diablo High School Key Clubs. These volunteers were assigned to sell tickets, control rides, and maintain the street barriers. Alongside their tasks, volunteers were able to meet up with their fellow devils in the division and get to know a few more devils and members from the division and our Kiwanis Club! Outside of serving the community, volunteers and their families were open to enjoying the surrounding events in the Plaza, such as pictures with Santa, letters to Santa, and meeting real reindeer! Other entertainment included a performance by Concord High School’s jazz ensemble band, D’ann’s dance academy, Concord High School’s Ladies First, and the 925 Band! This was quite an exciting event and really set the mood for the start of the holiday season!

“It was really fun helping everyone around me while hanging out with my community.”

“This was my first key club event and it was an amazing experience. Everyone there was welcoming and incredibly kind. This is definitely an event that I’ll remember and now I’m looking forward to volunteering more often.”
