he month of July is full of patriotic pride.

We celebrate democracy and the liberty of the nation. We remember with gratitude President Thomas Jefferson, author of the American Declaration of Independence (1776), a document that served as an example that led to freedom for the New World. The United States also supported the Hispanic emancipation process. To commemorate the 239th anniversary of the Independence of the United States, in this edition we share with you the story of three men that are crossing the Americas riding motorcycles. Right now they are traveling throughout the historic Route 66, a symbol of freedom. They started from the furthest point in the south to the farthest north. From Ushuaia, Argentine, the southernmost city to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, the northernmost city. They are carrying the flag of hope. We talked with them along the way, as they were passing through The Woodlands. The campaign for Mayor of Houston has begun New changes are coming; that is why we invited the candidates for Mayor of Houston to share with our readers how they plan to face up to these challenges. Since politicians are excellent at answering questions, we added a twist, by asking them to do it in 20 words or less. Houston is an engine for the growth of The United States. The cultural impact that globalization has brought to the Houston area is huge. The Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University highlights that “no other city exemplifies more clearly the trends that are renewing so rapidly the social and political landscape in all urban America”.

l mes de julio viene cargado de orgullo patrio. Celebramos el tiempo de

la democracia y de la libertad de los pueblos. Recordamos con gratitud al Presidente Thomas Jefferson, autor de la declaración de Independencia de Estados Unidos (1776), documento que sirvió de ejemplo para llevar libertad al Nuevo Mundo. La unión americana apoyó el proceso emancipador hispanoamericano. Para conmemorar el 239 aniversario de la independencia de Estados Unidos, en esta edición les traemos la historia de tres hombres que están recorriendo en moto el Continente Americano, y ahora mismo viajan a través de la histórica Ruta 66, símbolo de la libertad. Partieron del punto más extremo en el sur rumbo al más lejano en el norte. Desde Ushuaia, Argentina, la ciudad más austral hasta Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, la ciudad más extrema al norte. Van llevando la bandera de la esperanza. En su paso por The Woodlands dialogamos con ellos.

Pablo Castel looks at the city of Buenos Aires and writes the story of his own crime; encouraged by the weak hope that someone will come to understand… “If Only At Least One Single Person.” 1 This cry reveals the anguish of an individual who needs to c ommunicate; an isolated individual that needs to be u nderstood, even after having killed the only person who could have u nderstood him. The Tunnel, written by Ernesto Sábato, is considered an e xistentialist work. It recounts the loneliness of the p rotagonist, the starting point to the psychological study of a lonely man in an equally lonely world. Not even freedom can alter the “ external” conditions of its central ch aracter, because Castel sees life as a depressing tunnel. This painter however, thinks that he has discovered someone that is like him, and he feels an attraction that he can´t repress. He sets out on his quest, seemingly certain that both suffer the same helplessness and the same solitude. “And it was as if the two of us had been living in passageways or parallel tunnels, not knowing that we were next to each other as kindred souls in kindred times to meet each other at the end of the passageways, in front of a scene painted by me, as a key meant for itself, like a secret revelation that I was there and the passages were finally joined and the time for encounter had come.” Sábato uses symbolism as an essential element to encrypt and decrypt both the expression of the subconscious and the dreams product of this experience in The Tunnel. Thus, symbols become the central thread of a story in which freedom doesn´t consist of existence itself, but the way of being and, therefore it is imbued with a tragic character and deep pessimism. Each of these symbols offers the reader a different blow, a new perspective that allows him/her to better understand the complexity of the protagonist’s mind.

ciudad de Buenos Aires y escribe la historia de su crimen, animado por la débil esperanza de que alguien llegue a entenderlo... “Aunque sea una sola persona”. 1 Este grito revela un personaje angustiado y sumamente necesitado de comunicación. Un individuo aislado, que necesita ser comprendido aún después de haber matado a la única persona que podría entenderlo. El Túnel, escrito por Ernesto Sábato, es considerado una obra existencialista, y la soledad de su protagonista, el punto de partida hacia el estudio psicológico de un hombre solitario en un mundo igualmente solitario. Ni siquiera la libertad puede alterar las condiciones “exteriores” de su personaje central, puesto que Castel concibe la vida como un túnel deprimente. The First Successful Declaration of Independence in the World

n the 4th of July, Americans nationwide

celebrate the 239th birthday of the United States. Families gather from all around the country to enjoy the holiday, grills are dusted off to barbecue savory meat; and fireworks are let off to thunderously light up the night sky. Although the 4th of July is a fun way to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of our country, the influence that day has had on all of North America holds a much deeper value than simply a time for food and celebration. The Declaration of Independence, was the first of its kind, as it was the first successful Declaration of Independence in the world. It laid the foundation for all the Latin countries in America, to rise up against their oppressors and fight for the rights they deserved. Within 50 years of the Declaration’s signing, nearly all of Latin America had declared independence from their rulers as well. All of these declarations of independence not only ensured us the rights we now enjoy, but also provided the framework for the way we all live our lives today. The equality and freedoms that we hold as commonplace now, may not have existed at all, were it not for those thousands of troops across the Americas fighting for independence in the past. The immensely diverse and booming city of Houston has come to be as a direct result of that day 239 years ago, when those 56 delegates signed that declaration in Philadelphia; and I couldn’t be more thankful that they did.

l 4 de julio, los estadounidenses celebran en el cumpleaños 239º de la

nación. Las familias se reúnen para disfrutar de las vacaciones, las parrillas se llenan de carne para asar y los fuegos artificiales se dispararan para encender con luces y sonido el cielo nocturno. Aunque el 4 de julio es una forma divertida de conmemorar la firma de la Declaración de la Independencia y el nacimiento de nuestro país, la influencia que ese día ha tenido en toda América del Norte tiene un valor mucho más profundo que simplemente la comida y la celebración. Esta Declaración de Independencia fue la primera de su tipo en el mundo que tuvo un resultado exitoso. Sentó las bases para que el resto de los países latinoamericanos se alzasen contra sus opresores y lucharan por los derechos que les eran propios. Durante los siguientes 50 años, después de la firma de la Declaración, casi toda Latinoamérica había declarado también lsu independencia. Con este logro no sólo se aseguraron nuestros derechos, también establecieron el marco para la forma en que vivimos hoy. La igualdad y las libertades que nos son tan comunes ahora, podrían no existir en absoluto si no fuera por los miles de soldados en todo el continente americano que, desde hace siglos, luchan por la independencia. La ciudad de Houston, inmensamente diversa y en pleno auge, ha llegado a ser el resultado de ese día. Hace 239 años que los 56 delegados firmaron esa declaración en Filadelfia y yo no podría estar más agradecido de que lo hubieran hecho.

Conservative Texas Leaders Agree on the Need For a More Productive Immigration Conversation ››BY BRENDA KIRK

ith the State Legislature headed home for

the next months without passing any of the n egative bills related to immigration, it’s safe to say that our state’s c ommunities have made it out unscathed. Senate Bill 1819, proposed to exclude non-citizens from in-state t uition rates at Texas public colleges and universities. Through Senate Bill 185, some legislators urged the elimination of sanctuary cities, where local police officers do not ask about immigration status. For the economic and social well-being of all Texans, conservative community leaders worked to block this legislation. They realized that immigrants create growth, and subsequently all of us flourish. Policies that harm them, in turn harm all of us. That’s why it is beneficial to ensure that new Americans have essential opportunities, skills and status to reach their greatest potential. When those who govern us stand in the way by threatening p rograms like in-state tuition for DACA recipients, we all lose. At the beginning of the state’s legislative session, the immigration proposals seemed likely to pass, until a broad coalition of leaders came out against them. The robust, compelling influence of business, law enforcement and faith communities standing against these harsh proposals helped keep us from moving backward on immigration. Our Texas businesses will continue to want more educated w orkers. Our local chiefs and sheriffs want to maintain and build trust amongst their communities. Our churches want to show love to the outsiders in our midst. As Texans, we aren’t alone with these issues. The commotion in our state calls attention to the need for immigration reform discussions to take place at the national level. According to the Public Religion Research Institute’s American Values Atlas, 59% of Texans approve allowing undocumented immigrants the opportunity to earn citizenship, so long as they meet certain requirements. This percentage is about the same as the 60% who support it, in the United States as a whole. Across the country, conservative leaders from South Carolina to Iowa; from Nebraska to Alabama and elsewhere are rejecting harsh rhetoric and policies toward immigrants; suggesting instead vast reforms to replace our broken system. Conservative leaders have the opportunity to tackle the invaluable task of shaping immigration reform that effectively balances e conomic growth, family unity and adherence to an orderly process. When Texas, and our nation as a whole, become places where all those who live here can contribute fully, we will continue to strengthen. For that reason, community leaders celebrate that our legislature, did not take a step in a harmful direction. God Bless America.

La propuesta de ley 1819 del Senado proponía que quienes no fueran ciudadanos quedaran excluidos de los costos educativos de nivel estatal para las universidades y colegios públicos de Texas. Por medio de la propuesta de ley 185 del Senado, algunos legisladores solicitaron la eliminación de ciudades santuario, donde los oficiales de policía local no preguntan sobre el estatus migratorio. La comunidad de líderes conservadores trabajó para bloquear esta legislación por el bienestar social y económico de todos los texanos. Ellos se dieron cuenta de que los inmigrantes son parte del crecimiento y, como consecuencia, todos ganamos. Las políticas que les hacen daño a ellos también nos dañan a todos nosotros. Es por ello que es beneficioso asegurar que estos nuevos “americanos” tengan oportunidades esenciales, habilidades y el estatus migratorio para alcanzar su mayor potencial. Cuando aquellos que nos gobiernan se interponen en el camino al poner en riesgo programas como el de cuotas estatales de tutoría (DACA), todos perdemos. Al comienzo de las sesiones legislativas del estado, parecía que todas las propuestas de inmigración serían aprobadas, hasta que una coalición de líderes se opuso a ellas. La sólida y convincente influencia de las comunidades de negocios, religiosas y de la policía que se opusieron a estas duras propuestas, nos ayudó a evitar que retrocediera en materia de inmigración. Los negocios en Texas seguirán solicitando trabajadores con mejor nivel educativo. Nuestros mandatarios y jefes de policía locales quieren construir y mantener la confianza entre sus comunidades. Nuestras iglesias quieren demostrar aprecio hacia los extranjeros que ya están entre nosotros. Pero los texanos no estamos solos. La conmoción en nuestro estado llama la atención hacia la necesidad de debates sobre la reforma de inmigración que se llevan a cabo a nivel nacional. United Way Develops a Program To Engage the Hispanic Community

he Hispanic Outreach Program at the

Montgomery County United Way (MCUW) was launched in response to the tremendous growth in the county’s Hispanic population. The program aims to address the educational, health, and financial needs of the Hispanic community; to connect them with volunteer opportunities, and to assist other non-profit organizations in better serving the Hispanic community. The Hispanic Outreach Program consists of various initiatives including the Hispanic Outreach Professional Enrichment (HOPE); Viviendo Unidos; Information and Referral; as well as Attendance and Involvement in the Montgomery County Latino community events. Current in Montgomery County census figures show that since 2010, the county has grown by 55 percent overall; while at the same time, the growth in the Hispanic population has been nearly 155 percent. Latinos now represent 20.8 percent of the Montgomery County residents. Due to this rapid growth, Montgomery County and particularly the nonprofit community, have been slow to address the particular needs of this community. Additionally, a lack of cultural awareness and bilingual staffing throughout the county, poses a serious challenge in overcoming the barri- • Visibility and Exposure- To increase the visibility and presence of MCUW ers between the communities. HOPE partners with governmental entities, non-profit organizations, community members, business community, educational institutions and other social service agencies to increase awareness around Hispanic issues and to provide support and information to professionals working with the Hispanic Community. • Viviendo Unidos (Hispanic Affinity Group) – This group serves as a vehicle to engage and educate both the Hispanic and Hispanic Business communities about MCUW volunteering and outreach activities. This group represents the Hispanic component of MCUW and is comprised of a group of volunteers willing to donate their time, talent and financial support to MCUW. uinua, also known as quinoa, is the quintes-

sential Andean seed grown in the Andes of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile. For more than 5,000 years, it has been consumed by the Andean people almost as much as potato. Currently, Bolivia stands out as one of the largest producers of this nutritious seed; which has become a favorite of vegetarians for its protein, high fiber, Omega 3 and Omega 6 content. It is consumed as a cereal, but its protein and fat content are higher than cereals. In addition to the amounts of vitamins B and E, it is rich in potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and zinc. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2013, the International Year of the Quinua, as a way of recognition and appreciation for the Andean people who like their ancestors, have preserved the consumption of such a rich seed. Quinua can be found in a variety of colors: red, black and white, which is also a visual delight.

up north, three men are driving across the America by motorcycle. Traveling from Argentina to Alaska and from end to end, these three men bring hope on a motorcycle. Starting out in Brazil on April 1, they drove across Uruguay to Patagonia. From there, they went by Argentina; Chile; Peru; Ecuador; Colombia; Panama; Honduras; Costa Rica; Mexico and entered The United States through Brownsville, Texas. Arriving in The Woodlands on June 12, they made a brief stop. They were welcomed by representatives of the office of Convention and Visitors Bureau; The Woodlands Resort; and our magazine ConnexionW, among others. They are continuing their journey driving on the historic U.S. Route 66 to Santa Monica. From there, they’ll continue driving through late summer until they reach Prudhoe Bay, Alaska; the furthest point north in the Americas. They met because of their motorcycles. José de Alencar, 61, is two years away from retirement as a judge. He lives in Belen, a city at the mouth of the Amazon. Valclir Alberto, 64, is retired from a private bank, where he worked for more than three decades. Neviton Custodio, 45, is a military police officer in southern Brazil. The three men met at the Harley Davidson store in Porto Alegre, Brazil. “The Harley represents a way of living. If a Harlista is in trouble, we stop and help. From this simple gesture the bond of three ordinary people emerged,” said Alberto. “Every biker faces a challenge in his life: joining the two furthermost points of the Americas continent that he can reach on his bike; from Ushuaia, Argentina, the furthest southern city; to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, the furthest city to the north,” asserted de Alencar. “People come from all over the world to do this. Partieron desde Brasil el 1 de abril. Cruzaron Uruguay hasta la Patagonia. Fueron por Argentina, Chile, Perú, Ecuador, Colombia, Panamá, Honduras, Costa Rica, México y entraron a Estados Unidos por Brownsville, Texas. El 12 de junio hicieron un alto en The Woodlands, donde fueron recibidos por representantes de la oficina del Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Woodlands Resort, y nuestra revista CONNEXIONW, entre otros. Van por la histórica Ruta 66 hasta Santa Mónica, para luego continuar hasta Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, el punto por carretera más al norte de las Américas al que llegarán a finales del verano. he long-awaited summer season has arrived

when we enjoy light clothing, the beach, outdoor activities and of course, the time of year when we all want to have a perfect tan. But, watch out: before sun exposure we should prepare ourselves to avoid sunburns, sunspots, photo aging, and other irreversible skin damages.

It is essential to protect ourselves from sun exposure by using sunscreens according to our skin type, hats, caps, long-sleeved clothing, sunglasses and lip balms featuring at least 15 SPF. Also remember that smart and thermostatic clothes made with fibers that provide solar protection, are already available for sale. Another good preventive measure is to prepare our bodies internally prior to sun exposure by consuming foods rich in beta carotene. B-carotenes or beta-carotenes are orange or yellow vegetable pigments precursors of vitamin A which, along with melanin, lay on the outer layers of the skin creating a protective barrier against ultraviolet radiation, while helping to get a quicker tan. Beta-carotene is a natural pigment that does not alter our skin permanently. All yellow and orange fruits as well as vegetables, are among the natural foods rich in beta-carotene we can choose from. Examples include carrots, papaya, tomatoes, mangoes, spinach and peppers. Whenever we tan, we should also take into c onsideration how often we apply sunscreen. It is recommended that s unscreen be applied every three hours, after sweating, and e specially after being in the sea or in the pool. For children, using an a nti-allergenic sunscreen with a high protection factor is advisable. Often in the summer, the facial and body skins tend to get spots, regardless of the care and precautions that we take. Sunspots - also called freckles - are caused by an uneven increase of melanin on the [skin] epidermis or dermis. It is important to understand that sunspots are produced by different causes and are more common after 40 years of age; especially in areas that have been the most exposed to the sun such as hands, shoulders, cheeks, etc. Personally, during the summer I always carry sunscreen in the car, which I apply on my hands before driving. There are other reasons why skin exposed to the sun tends to become stained. Hormonal or hereditary factors, as well as some pharmacological and cosmetic treatments, can also accelerate the appearance of spots when we are exposed to the sun; so it is good to always read the contraindications before taking or using a product. Pero cuidado: antes de exponernos al sol debemos prepararnos para evitar quemaduras, manchas solares, fotoenvejecimiento y demás daños irreversibles en nuestra piel. Es fundamental protegernos de la exposición solar utilizando bloqueadores solares de acuerdo a nuestro tipo de piel, gorras, viseras, prendas de vestir de manga larga, anteojos para sol, protector labial con SPF mínimo de 15. Recuerde también que en el mercado, además, ya existe ropa inteligente, hecha con fibras que brindan protección solar y termorreguladoras. Otra buena medida preventiva es preparar nuestro organismo internamente antes de exponernos al sol, consumiendo alimentos ricos en betacarotenos. Los Betacarotenos o B Caroteno son los pigmentos vegetales de color naranja o amarillo, precursores de la Vitamina A, los cuales junto con la melanina se sitúan en las capas externas de la piel y crean una barrera protectora contra la radiación ultravioleta, además de que ayuda a obtener un bronceado más rápido. El betacaroteno es un pigmento natural que no altera nuestra piel de manera permanente. Entre los alimentos naturales ricos en betacarotenos tenemos todas las frutas y verduras de color amarillo y naranja , como las zanahorias , la papaya, los tomates, mangos, espinacas y pimentones, entre otros. A la hora de broncearnos también debemos tomar en cuenta la frecuencia con que nos aplicamos el bloqueador solar, recomendado cada 3 horas, después de sudar, después de estar en el mar o la piscina. Para los niños es recomendable usar un foto-protector anti-alergénico y con un factor de protección alto. Muchas veces, en el verano, la piel del rostro y del cuerpo tiende a mancharse por más cuidados y precauciones que tomemos, Las manchas solares –también llamadas lentigos– se producen por el aumento de la melanina en forma no uniforme en la epidermis o dermis de la piel. Es importante comprender que las manchas solares se producen por diferentes causas y que después de los 40 años de edad son más comunes, sobre todo en áreas que han estado más expuestas al sol como las manos, los hombros, pómulos, etc. Personalmente, en verano, siempre tengo en el auto un bloqueador solar, el cual aplico sobre mis manos antes de manejar. Existen otras causas por las cuales la piel expuesta al sol tiende a mancharse, entre ellas, factores hormonales, hereditarios y algunos tratamientos farmacológicos y cosméticos que también pueden acelerar la aparición de manchas al exponernos al sol, por ello es bueno leer siempre las contra-indicaciones antes de tomar o usar un producto. Universidad de las Américas Puebla Presented The First Edition of the Global Impunity Index San Antonio, TX.- By invitation from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), the Asociación de Empresarios Mexicanos and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Luis Ernesto Derbez Bautista, President of Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) presented the first edition of the Global Impunity Index (IGI, from its acronym in Spanish) to San Antonio’s academics, businessmen and students. The Global Impunity Index (IGI) is the first international academic work that measures this multidimensional phenomenon, analyzing information from 193 UN member countries and 14 territories that provide comparable statistical information. Of the 193 UN members, only 59 countries have the necessary updated statistical information on security, justice and human rights to be included in IGI. IGI shows that it is important to allocate the necessary resources for security and justice institutions. However, it is much more important that these institutions function adequately and respect human rights. The study also evidences the need to optimize and execute an adequate investigation process for most people who have formal contact with law enforcement. With this contribution, it was found that impunity is s tatistically related to human issues that concern the world, such as human development, inequality and corruption.

Naciones Unidas y 14 territorios que proveen información estadística comparable. De los 193 miembros de las Naciones Unidas, sólo 59 países tienen la información estadística actualizada necesaria en los ámbitos de seguridad, justicia y derechos humanos para ser incluidos en el IGI. El IGI muestra que es importante localizar los recursos necesarios para brindar seguridad y justicia. Sin embargo, es mucho más importante que estas instituciones funcionen adecuadamente y respeten los derechos humanos. El estudio también evidencia la necesidad de optimizar y ejecutar un proceso de investigación adecuado para la mayoría de la gente que tiene a su cargo reforzar el cumplimiento de la ley. Gracias a esta contribución se supo que la impunidad está estadísticamente relacionada a los problemas humanos que conciernen al mundo, tales como el desarrollo humano, la desigualdad y la corrupción.
