Creating Peace Together

by Connie De Jong, PhD

World Peaces opened a storefront in late October of 2020 based on the hope and belief that people would need to reconnect once it became safe to do so, and we wanted to be ready to provide one of the spaces to host those connections. Handcrafting workshops are one of the central ways we are creating space for connecting with each other. I want to tell you a little more about why World Peaces offers workshops and how to be a part of how they evolve in our physical space as well as online. Handcrafting is a central aspect of Fair Trade. We believe there is so much value in working with our hands. We can connect with the materials- typically recycled or natural materials, through handcrafting. We can connect with our families, neighbors, strangers and friends through handcrafting. We can connect with the wider global community through handcrafting and trading handcrafts. This is simple, age-old, powerful and transformative work. The pandemic has taken a toll on our minds and our connections with each other. Handcrafting workshops provide a way for Page 2

us to gently reconnect with one another. We can chat and listen to one another, work in proximity, and create a work that emerges from our stories. We have begun a materials section in the store and online for those handcrafters who want to be free to create their own ideas. We also completed our first in-store workshop painting birdhouses. And we are more than half way through a workshop series created for the high school students at the254.org youth center in Gahanna. We are also developing paths to reach out to our immigrant and refugee communities to participate with us. As we grow our handcrafting workshop options, we would love to hear from you about the best times for you to attend and the most exciting work you would like to create. We have a short survey to help us learn from you – please consider taking a moment to complete it for us. We want to thank you for coming to the store, for connecting with us in whatever way is most comfortable for you, and for what you have to offer our community and the world. We are all World Peaces, thanks to you. Interested in getting involved with workshops? We want to offer as many as possible in all of the styles and crafts that interest you! Take a few minutes to take our survey and let us know what kind of workshops you would be interested in attending!

Haven Herbs is your one-stop, small-batch worker-owned apothecary for ALL of your family’s health needs. We are based in central Ohio and are built around a commitment to each other, our community, and the planet. Currently, we are working on continuing and implementing the following mutual aid strategies: 1. All proceeds from Justice 4 All, our tincture to help restore body, mind, and spirit (formulated for burnt out activists in the first place!), goes to two organizations fighting police violence against BIPOC. 2. We are in the process of building a shiny new website of our own, and when it is done, there will be a “Round Up for Reparations” function. Each quarter, we will be supporting a different BIPOC organization. 3. We want to help train more street medics. We are currently looking for willing and qualified trainers currently and then we will make the announcement once we get the location, trainer, and date nailed down. 4. Your purchases fund our community-driven efforts including monthly free wellness workshops for the Cancer Support Community. When you buy our products at Haven Herbs, you are doing more than supporting a small business. You are helping us create a healthy, connected community. Check us out at havenherbs.com to read more! Global Gifts Why Choose Fair & Ethical Fashion?

By Olivia McDermott-Sipe, Global Gifts Sales Associate Over 8 years ago in Bangladesh, an eightstory factory building known as Rana Plaza collapsed causing the entirely avoidable deaths of over 1,000 workers. This should have been a wake-up call, but still today, far too many people all over the world are working in conditions Page 7

that compromise personal safety and autonomy. Fast fashion has become increasingly popular because it is trendy and cheap, but the true cost of these garments could not be higher. The fashion industry as a whole contributes to 10% of total annual carbon emissions, and that figure does not include fiber waste, which is typically incinerated or sent to landfills. Human lives and unsustainable practices simply cannot be acceptable trade-offs for t-shirts and lounge pants. We invite you to research brands before you buy to ensure that your money is not fueling the fast and disposable model of the fashion industry. Choosing to buy verified Fair Trade garments contributes to improvements for workers around the world by ensuring just wages, worker integrity, and environmentally conscious practices. And YOU benefit by adding to your wardrobe high quality, skillfully made, and truly unique pieces that you’ll truly enjoy wearing! Check out the ethical wear on our website here: globalgiftsft.com/shop/clothing/ and be sure to watch for the arrival of fall and winter wear (including woolens) starting in September!

the just craft

The Just Craft, a podcast for ethically-minded makers, was founded in 2019 by Alissa Head with a mission to open conversation around craft sourcing. Focusing on the handmade movement and where it intersects with climate and social justice issues, each episode touches on ethical sourcing, environmental sustainability, and fair trade.

Season 3, Episode 2: Alissa visits Charis Walker, Shepherdess at Tarheelbilly Farm in Southern Ohio, with a goal to meeting the sheep that made the wool for one of her favorite garments she knit. In part one, learn the history of Tarheelbilly Farm, and how Charis and her husband Ben manage their farm and flock holistically, and how this approach results in happier animals, healthier food, and fine fleeces. In part 2, Charis talks about crafting with her Tunis wool, and shares her perspective as a woman of color on racism and the anti-racism movement in the knitting and fiber arts community. Finally, listen in, as Charis introduces Alissa to the gorgeous fleeces of sheep Clancy, Hollis, and Julie. Learn more about Tarheelbilly Farm at tarheelbillyfarm.com, and follow on Instagram @tarheelbillyfarmer. The Just Craft is available on Stitcher, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and thejustcraft.com. Follow on Instagram @thejustcraft and Twitter @justcraftcast. Page 9

Shop Ellery

The greatest thing about small businesses is the communities that form around them. Community is vital to all of us and is a pillar in Ellery’s values. By supporting other women-run businesses we all have more opportunities to grow.

At a market earlier this year, I complimented a woman’s earrings. She said she had just bought them from another vendor and couldn’t wait to put them on (I LOVE when you all do this). She went on to get popsicles with her friends and when she left another woman at my booth said, “you should have told her one of your pair of earrings were prettier, you missed out on a sale” To be honest this comment threw me, it is so RARE to hear things like that in the small business space I have found myself in. I haven’t stopped thinking about this comment and I felt that I needed to share this experience. The other vendor’s sale was not my loss, this woman made a purchase that she LOVED, she lit up when I complimented the earrings. I don’t believe in pushing sales because I don’t see my customers as just consumers. I see you as friends, as community members. Without all of you, Ellery would not be here, community and cherishing what you buy, and sell are what makes small businesses so incredible, and I just love this little community so much. Thank you for being here. We are more than consumers, we are a community. Page 10
