Ghana Holds the Beat

by Connie De Jong, PhD

World Peaces is a Fair Trade Company all about connecting people from around the world through handmade goods and service to create equitable, sustainable communities. We sell products from many countries, featuring those from Ghana, Bolivia, Mexico and Lesotho. Ghana is a very special place for me and I invite you to consider traveling with us once the world is ready! Ghana is located in West Africa and is known for its incredibly welcoming people. Ghana is currently experiencing an artistic renaissance as Ghanaian artists incorporate global experiences into their creative processes. Ghana offers a rich and diverse palette for innovation that also enjoys celebration of tradition. Ghanaians love to express themselves through music and dance. Drumming is sacred, social, and central to marking many important events. I think of Ghana as holding the beat for the world – keeping rhythm central so we all can walk, move and shimmy. Find new t-shirts in store and online that translate this feeling visually. When you wear it, feel free to step with swagger, shimmy when inspired, and stand tall as the beat moves through you. We are all World Peaces, thanks to you! Page 2

Connie De Jong

World Peaces Owner

Connie De Jong founded World Peaces out of a desire to do something more to expand her impact through Fair Trade. After over a decade expanding Fair Trade in Columbus with Global Gallery, establishing a wholesale company was a transformative decision for her life. She spends most of her efforts on the artisan design, production and community development aspects of Fair Trade, constantly seeking collaborators and experts to help uplift the work to its highest potential. It is her desire to continue to evolve her purpose to better serve the people she believes in all around the world, from Columbus to Accra to Cochabamba to Merida to Lhasa and back again. Connie spends much of her time with artisans in their home places, and is fueled by each trip. She looks forward to meeting you in the store, traveling with you, collaborating creatively or finding ways to help each other connect with our greater purpose.

Haven Herbs Who and what is Haven Herbs? We are an herbal, small batch apothecary based in central Ohio built around a commitment to each other, our community, and the planet. We are different from other herbal companies in many ways: We are worker-owned! We practice democracy at work so everyone you meet from Haven is an owner or an owner-in-training. Our formulations come from customer requests. Our staff herbalist creates formulas to address community needs and does so regularly! Everything we source is intentional. We are a member of Fair Trade Columbus: our Shea butter, Coconut oil, and Cocoa butter are all Fair Trade. We also engage in lots of mutual aid in the community. Our new website will have a Round Up for Reparations feature that goes to BIPOC communities. Your purchases also help fund our communitydriven efforts including monthly free wellness workshops for the Cancer Support Community. When you buy our products at Haven Herbs, you are doing more than supporting a small business. You are helping us create a healthy community. Find a selection of our products at World Peaces, also a pick up location. Check us out at havenherbs.com Page 6

Global Gallery Coffee Shop Global Gallery was started in the Short North Arts District in 1991 and is now nestled in the Clintonville community. As a non-profit cafe, retail, and art space, our mission is to promote Fair Trade, handcrafted products from around the world while developing cultural enrichment.

We are proud partners with Ramble Coffee who roasts in-house and supplies us with fresh, fair and Direct Trade beans for the cafe. We also partner with World Peaces to bring in exciting Fair Trade retail products from across the globe. Other local vendors we carry are: Bake Me Happy, Pattycake Bakery, OneLine Coffee, Thunderkiss Coffee, Melissa’s Incredible Edibles, Art by Inga, Bouquet Botanicals, Rambling House Soda and more! Shop Ellery

Hi there! My name is Emily Marshall and I am the Shop Owner of Ellery. The inspiration behind Ellery comes from my Grandmother. She was born in Parsons, Kansas into a large family. She grew up saving everything and finding a new way to use it and making clothes for herself and her family. I was always inspired by her creativity and her ability to create these handmade goods and let nothing go to waste. In college, I learned about Fair Trade and realized that this was what I had admired about my Grandmother on a larger, global scale. With this as my inspiration, I decided to open Ellery. Ellery is a curated shop filled with amazing handcrafted pieces. We currently have 16 other women-owned businesses represented in our shop. These pieces are ethically and consciously made and are unique and quality goods. We support other womenled businesses, buy from companies that ensure a living wage, and curate items that are sustainably made. We are based in Columbus, Ohio and currently, we are only online and we do pop-ups and markets around the city. Follow along with us on Instagram and Facebook @ shop_ellery and shop with us at shopellery.com Page 9

World Peaces Why a zine? About the Zine

World Peaces created a Zine to connect with our community. We are always looking for ways to help people understand Fair Trade more acutely, to meet those active in Fair Trade in Columbus, and to share the stories of our partners all around the world. We plan to publish quarterly, both hard and digital copies. Pick up a copy at World Peaces in Clintonville at 15 W Dunedin Rd., at our collaborators’ locations, or online. We invite you to visit all our Fair Trade friends and collaborators, online or safely in person, so that you might deepen your positive impact on the world. We hope this publication serves to introduce you to a new place, person, or practice that inspires you to take action, think more deeply about your choices for purchases, donating time or money, or to simply enjoy learning. We are all World Peaces, thanks to you!
