Creative Direction: Branding, Illustration Duration: 1 week
Brief Description During my internship, Nike were working on creating a bespoke ‘NikeLab’ logo to represent the various combinations one can choose to create a shoe.
Development The whole point of the Nike Lab was that there was a visual element representing something bespoke. “Applique refers to a needlework technique and this was the main source of inspiration for the creative sections of the NikeLab logo. The real turning point in this brief was when we pinned up all of our combined work up on the wall and the Nike boss came over to give feedback on which idea he wanted us to push further. This taught me a new found skill within the industry and that is, it is not a competition for the best design, rather a group effort to push the strongest design forward.
Evaluation Throughout my time at Nike, I had to really understand their ethos and mentality before I could dive into my work. Nike believe in being a sponge and being innovative, all around their offices they have motivational quotes. I understood that this brand is always progressing and looking for new ways to express ideas. With this is in mind, it completely changed the way I started designing. I started to sponge and learn off of the definers that were currently there, they were teaching me their skills. They based most of their work off plenty different bits of inspiration. A great technique they used was taking inspiration from something completely different to their brief and applying it to their work. Ie: The NikeLab stitching was inspired by the french way of stitching “appliqué”. For example, using the techniques from the Appliqué on the left to effect the work on the right.
