TypoEnviro Creative Direction: Branding, Logo Design Duration: 1 Week
SEAN CONNOLLY
Brief Description
TypoEnviro is the combination of Typography and the Environment. I interview people with interesting backgrounds and stories and I create a piece of typography from that. This will be an ongoing brief that I will continue after university. This specific brief will only contain 1 interview that I conducted on a guy named Steven Ellis.
Research/Inspiration After the interview with Steven Ellis, I was fascinated by the idea of exploding colour representing our society. This was the exert from the interview that gave this brief direction. “You feel isolated, it’s like walking around in a parallel universe. You’re in society, you’re walking around with it, but you’re not engaging with it. It’s like you’re an apparition.”
Development I started to try and emulate the ink dropping effect from the previous boards inspiration. I felt that this would add the aesthetically attractive part to my piece of work. I wanted the word “Apparition to stand out and work in contrast with the rest of the colours.
Development This brief was extended into editorial design because it is an interesting story that should be shared with everybody. These editorial pieces on the right influenced my editorial
Editorial The editorial section was designed for people to be able to pick it up and have a quick read. The logic behind it was that people enjoy reading stories of people who have suffered and come out strong on the other side. This publication focuses primarily on human endurance and will power, two factors I believe live within us all.
Evaluation This brief brought out a certain excitement within me. It is a feeling that only designers can feel and it is one of motivation and satisfaction. I felt this because I was enjoying what I was doing, this type of design really interested me and I will continue to pursue this brief long after university. The fact that I was combining journalism and graphic design made me feel as though I was almost inventing a new type of nichÊ within graphic design. This brief taught me that graphic design doesn’t always have to be client led, that one should always have a side project like this to work on.
