Thanks to a small group of progressive breeders in the late 1960s, Limousin cattle have made a lasting impact on the North American cattle industry. As we celebrate this anniversary, the ALA would like to pay tribute to the founders of our breed association, and salute the breeders and members who are continuing to raise, develop, and improve on what Limousin has to offer for both Purebred and Commercial cattlemen. Here are some Alberta “MILESTONE MOMENTS” from the last 50 years.

1968 The first live Limousin genetics arrive in Canada in the form of Prince Pompadour NIM 1.

Donna Darger serves as the first Alberta Limousin Queen.

1969 Alberta breeders lay the groundwork for forming the Canadian Limousin Association.

1972 The Alberta Limousin Association is officially incorporated on April 4, 1972

1974 A Limo cross steer wins the Calgary 4-H Show for the 4th consecutive year. Pictured steer exhibited by Brenda McKinnon.

1978 The first National Bull Test wraps up, with Limac Joe taking top honours as the high indexing bull out of 75 participants.

1981 Alberta Limouisin show sweaters make their debut appearance in Camrose.

1978 Alberta hosts the Canadian Junior Limousin Show in conjunction with the Stettler Fair. The Alberta Junior Limousin Association is formed.

1979 A promotional project organized by John Dreher of Golden Limousin Acres sees the fullblood bull “Golden Limousin Legend” penned in the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce lobby during the Calgary Stampede 1979

1989 The "20 Years of Progress" show is held in Red Deer. The show has over 140 entries from over 30 Limousin breeders.

1994 Highland Ballerina makes history as the first Limousin female to be named Supreme Champion at the Calgary Stampede.

1982 The Limousin float wins first prize in the agriculture section of the Calgary Stampede.

1987 The Alberta Limousin Royalty tradition continues. Pictured is retiring ALA Queen Sherry Ternoster, ALA Queen Susan Knight, and ALA Princess Theresa McNally.

1993 The Farmfair Limousin show is rebranded as the Limousin Bonanza Gold competition and features new events and larger prize winnings.

1999 Alberta hosts the 2nd Annual Canadian National Junior Limousin Show in Bashaw.

2002 Calgary once again plays host to the International Limousin Conference. A highlight of the event was the "No Boundaries" sale, which saw a record breaking average of $16,250 on 34 lots.

2017 Greenwood Canadian Impact ET makes history as the first Limousin bull to be named Supreme Champion at the Alberta Supreme Show at Farmfair.

Limousin has a successful run competing in the steak challenge at the Canadian Bull Congress in Camrose.

2012 Alberta once again hosts the National Junior Limousin Conference, this time in conjunction with Summer Synergy in Olds.

"The first photo is from 1973 when my grandfather's first Limousin import heifer 'Grive' calved. She was a "G" cow. The second photo is a whole alphabet later when I purchased Gem, another G cow, from Mountain Park Ranch in Turner Valley, Alberta and she became my first 4-H female. Now it's 2018, and I realize next year is another "G" year and I might have to keep my eye out for a nice Limo heifer!"

"We attended our first Junior Limousin Show in 1996, and for the next 10 years most of our family "vacations" would take place with a trailer full of Limo cattle in tow. Whether it was travelling to a local fair to meet up with our "Big Butts" sale group, or driving across the province to the AJLA show, the cattle shows were the highlights of our summers and all of the competitions were great learning experiences."

" I found another set of photos that tell a great story. The first is an old Limousin Leader advertisement for Limac Eldorado, a bull selling at auction in 1974. My grandparents, Alan and Sammy Parke, bought him and the second photo is from the sale report. Nana and Papa are the young couple in the left of the photo. The last photo is a mature picture of Eldorado at the Bonaparte Ranch in BC where for many years he was Papas leading herdsire. This photo is framed in my kitchen. Wouldn't it be awesome to hear Papa's 1974 passion for his cattle and dreams for the Limousin breed in Canada?!"
