to the 38th Annual Towaw Bull Sale.

The one constant in this business is that you never know what each year will bring, just that it will never cease to be interesting. In 2015 we went through a record drought; 2016 brought near record amounts of rainfall. There was lots of grass, crops were good, and the land really rebounded. Unfortunately for some of our grain farming neighbours, the harvest was a real struggle. We hope some of those crops can be cleaned up this spring. Prices and margins in the cattle markets have tightened up, making efficient, easy keeping cattle in more demand than ever. I recently watched a video about successful businesses and that often their success lies in having their customers know “why” they do what they do, rather than what they do. For years we have stressed our culling practices, our philosophies, and our feeding program. This year we thought we should tell you why we do what we do. We believe it is our obligation as purebred breeders to provide you, our commercial customers, with trouble free genetics that positively affect your profit margin. Our passion of continually improving our genetics goes hand in hand with our commitment to helping you improve your cowherds. Why do we cull bulls hard, not feed our way out of fertility problems, not trim our cattle’s feet, and cull open or unproductive cows? Because you, our customers, can’t afford to do those things in your herds and you certainly can’t afford to introduce those types of genetics. If making a profit was our only “why”, we could certainly feed and manufacture excuses to get a higher percentage of our Bulls to the sale. We don’t do these things because we believe we would be letting our customers down, and that is something we aren’t willing to do. I guess that might be “why” we are celebrating our 38th Bull Sale this year, in the same community, to many of the same customers. Once again this year Dave, Rhonda, Brooke and Bryce from Rainbow Red Angus are consigning a strong group of yearlings to the sale. We are continually impressed with how many miles and effort they put into their genetics. We have watched Brooke and Bryce grow up before our eyes and become very accomplished cattle breeders and showmen in their own right. Dave and his crew are bringing an exciting group of bulls chock full of new genetics highlighted by their embryo program. Kolby Heaven has been working with Rainbow, as well as our herd, and knows the genetics as well as any of us. All bulls in the sale sell with the same guarantee, and if a problem occurs please contact us so we can work to rectify the situation.

We will be starting the sale at 2:00 pm MST. We feel this gives folks time to get things done at home and still have time to look at the bulls prior to the sale. If you can’t make it to the sale in person we have a sight unseen purchase plan as well as a number of sales staff that would be able to bid on your behalf. We are also working with DLMS who will have the sale broadcast on the internet. The DLMS information will be displayed on future pages where Mark Shologan and his crew can assist customers to bid online. TOWAW BULL WARRANTY

Towaw Cattle Co. and Rainbow Red Angus guarantee to sell you a bull that is structurally sound, and a bull that has passed a semen test conducted by a licensed veterinarian.

IN SHORT, WE GUARANTEE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH A SOUND BREEDING BULL. IF HE HASN’T PASSED A SEMEN TEST, HE DOESN’T SELL. Should any animal fail to be a satisfactory breeder, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible, an adjustment will be made to reflect the bull in question, as a credit towards the purchase of another bull. In no case shall credit exceed the purchase price of the bull. We however, will not provide replacement or adjustment for physical injury or mismanagement. Bearing this in mind, we stress the importance of insurance on your bulls. Should you have a problem with your bull, please call us right away, and we will work with you to make sure you are satisfied with your bull.

Sale Terms

RETAINED INTERESTS

We are selling some bulls in this sale as 2/3 interest and full possession. The 2/3 interest part means that the seller wishes to retain a 1/3 interest in the bull entitling him to use the bull through artificial insemination and sharing in any future drawing expenses and revenue of semen on a 1/3 basis. Full possession entitles the new owner to all physical rights to the bull. As in any other information, announcements from the block take precedence over any written information in the catalog.

DELIVERY & BOARD

A rebate of $50.00 per bull will be offered to buyers who bring their trailer and truck their bulls home themselves within one week of sale day. We Will deliver bulls free of charge within Western Canada or closest U.S. port of entry. Bulls will be kept at Towaw, free of charge, until April 20, 2017. If bulls are left longer a fee of $2.00 per day will be charged. Bulls are left entirely at the risk of the purchaser and we recommend that insurance be taken.

VOLUME DISCOUNTS

TERMS AND CONDITIONS TERMS: Unless otherwise previously arranged with Towaw Cattle Co., terms of this sale are cash or cheque, payable in Canadian funds. As soon as an animal is sold it becomes the responsibility of the purchaser. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Errors in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the stand at sale time, and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. DISPUTES: In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer by the seller for each REGISTERED animal after settlement has been made. DELIVERY: We will arrange delivery of the bulls to central points in western Canada and closest U.S. Port of Entry, free of charge. ACCIDENTS: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of the buyer, the owners assume no responsibility in this matter, and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of accident or loss of property, on or about the premises.

If you buy 5 - 9 bulls you will receive a 5% discount on each bull. If you buy 10 or more bulls you will receive a 7.5% discount on each bull.

Auction Format This year we will be working with Mark Shologan and broadcasting our sale over the Internet on DLMS.ca. The bulls will be videotaped prior to the sale and on sale day we will have large TV screens set up with the bulls video running while they sell. Two weeks before the sale, videos of every bull will be available at our website www.towawcattle.com or at www.cattlevids.ca.

EPDs: Expected Progeny Differences

CE: Calving Ease, U =Unassisted BW: Actual weight at birth WW: Weaning weight in lbs. Adjusted to 205 days. WI: Weaning Index - Weaning weight as a % of average WW of contemporaries. YW: Yearling weight in lbs. - calculated as adjusted 205 day weight + (ADG on feed x 165 days) YI: Yearling Index - Weight gain from Weaning to Yearling as a % of average gain of contemperaries. AOD: The actual age of the dam when she calved the bull offered for sale.

EPD’s are a powerful tool that is available for making genetic progress. EPD’s incorporate the performance of the individual, along with the performance of all its relatives. CE: Calving ease - the higher number predicts more calving ease. BW: Birth. A lower EPD predicts lower birthweights. WW: Weaning. High weaning EPD’s predict higher weaning weights. YW: Yearling. Higher yearling EPD’s indicate greater expected yearling weights. MILK: Milk EPD should be used to predict the milking ability of the daughters of the bulls in question. Higher milk EPD’s project more milk.

NOTE: All Indexes are calculated within herds, as management may differ somewhat.

In fact, the dam 73Z is a former high seller from Ter- Ron Farms of Forestburg. The sire, Weston, is our go to calving ease bull, he was purchased as the high selling bull at Moose Creek in 2015 and sired the high selling heifer in our fall female sale at $25500. 26D has been a standout from birth and I’m sure will get marked on sale day. Donation Heifer This year Rainbow Red Angus will be donating a commercial March born heifer with the proceeds going to Play Around the World and the Stollery Children’s Hospital. We will sell tickets in the Dutch Auction Format, $10 per ticket, just prior to selling the bulls. For example, if you bid $100 you will get 10 chances to win the heifer in the draw immediately following the sale. Tickets will be available right up until the time of the draw as well.

Our daughter Brooke is part of Play Around The World and will be traveling to Cambodia for 3 months in May. Play Around the World (PAW) is a service learning course offered by the University of Alberta, Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. Students from a variety of disciplines volunteer in either South America, Asia (Cambodia or Thailand) or Canada (Fort Providence, NWT) for 3 months where they gain valuable life skills, and broaden their worldview, living and working in a culture different from their own. Students will be facilitating play, recreation and sport in a variety of contexts and focus on the protection, promotion and provision of the Child’s Right to Play. Play is viewed as a vehicle to enliven the human spirit and to promote optimal development. Funds raised will enable students to participate and will directly benefit the agencies PAW serves.

Secondly we would like to donate to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Anually, more than 200,000 children from across North-Western Canada rely on the Stollery to provide lifesaving medical care. The Stollery Children’s Hospital hosts the only pediatric emergency in northern Alberta, it is the referral centre for all complex pediatric heart surgeries and transplants, a major organ transplantation centre, home to Canada’s largest regional program for neonatal intensive and intermediate care, and provides some of the most advanced treatments for child-health issues in the country. Through support, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation continues to give the sickest kids the best chance to live a long and healthy life.
