Letter from the Publisher August is a very busy month. The staff and volunteers of Conscious Community Magazine will be manning our booths at the annual Faeries Festival in South Elgin on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd, and at the Body Mind Spirit Expo in Skokie on the weekend of the 15th and 16th where I am presenting two free classes. The dream interpretation class will be the kickoff for my new column on dreams which will make its debut in our September issue. To be considered for publication your dream must be submitted in writing with your permission to use it in the column. The national political scene is coming into clearer focus with the first Republican presidential debate about to happen. The leading Republican candidate apparently resonates with the disappointment and anger of the American public over the inability of Congress to accomplish anything. The lack of firm leadership in our national legislature, manifested in its inability to reach meaningful compromise has led to a public frustration level now manifested in the national presidental candidate polls. One of the principles of America today and in the beginning of our Republic is compromise. The founding fathers knew this and in their infinite and eternal wisdom structured our democracy to facilitate compromise and even require it. The poll numbers of the leading Republican candidates are saying to their leadership, “you got it wrong,” and “do something.” The American public is saying “enough” to the political wavering and indecisiveness. Even if they disagree with a candidate’s stance, at least they resonate with someone who is clear on the issues and unafraid to speak their position, unpopular as it may be to many voters. A famous patriot said, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” He was speaking of free speech, a cornerstone of the American Revolution. Where did we go wrong? When did we lose sight of the founding principles of our great nation? And how do we get it back? Another very visible area where the public awareness and interest is playing out is in the social issues of our day. Same sex marriage is essentially a done deal with some pockets of resistance that will eventually dissipate and disappear. Medical and recreational use of marijuana is at the fore now with the same inevitable result. It has wide acceptance and legalization will sweep the nation along with the influx of new tax and licensing revenue which the states and localities desperately need. You have only to look at the Colorado experience to know that there is little, if any, downside and a huge upside of public demand and tax revenue. Critics will make their argument that it is a gateway drug, but there is no credible evidence to support that contention. We live in exciting and interesting times, so enjoy the ride regardless of your individual beliefs. Change is sweeping our nation and without change there can be no progress. We are the pioneers of a bright rosy future. All we need to do is be open to consider the opinions of others. There is a huge agenda of social change sweeping our country and we can all be part of it if we are willing. Until next time,

Walter

All About Town…

Amma

The Hugging Saint MA Centre - Chicago, IL July 1st-3rd, 2015 by Theresa Puskar

From July 1st to July 3rd Mata Amritanandamayi, better known as Amma, the “hugging saint”, paid her annual visit to her Chicago area ashram, located in Elburn. If you have never been graced with an opportunity to see her, you should add it to your spiritual bucket list. Sitting in her presence, or better yet having a chance to get a wonderful hug from her, is a rare and magical gift. I had a chance to visit with her on two separate occasions. Firstly, many years ago when my daughter was about 1-2 years old, my dear friend, yoga instructor and spiritual teacher, Stephen Hartman informed me that she was in town. Having a young child is a blessing when visiting with Amma, as when with a child, the wait time to meet with her is not very long. We waited less than 30 minutes before my family and I had a chance to be held by her. At that time I learned of all of the work she did around the world with the poor and needy. She provides everything from schooling in third world countries, to natural disaster relief. Her all-encompassing compassion and maternal love are reflected in the many volunteers who carry her torch throughout the world. The second chance I had to meet her was about five years ago. At that time she did not have her own ashram in the Chicago area, and was scheduled for several days at the Westin Yorktown Hotel in Lombard. Again the experience with this particular visit was another example of how perfectly this universe cares for me when I get 8 Conscious Community - August 2015

out of my own way long enough to allow it to do so. It was the night before my husband and I had planned on sharing with our 8-year-old daughter the news that we were getting a divorce. I found myself unable to sleep in anticipation of the imminent pain that we were going to impose upon our unsuspecting child. So, I headed to my office, and opened my email. Much to my surprise, there was at late night correspondence from Dawn Silver (who owned the Healing Earth Resources bookstore at that time). She mentioned that she had forgotten to inform her email list that Amma was going to be in town the next day. When I found out that she was giving hugs that morning only a couple of miles from my home, I was elated! I knew that this was a huge gift that was handed to me on a silver platter. My family could receive Amma’s blessing on that turbulent and tragic day. Before my daughter awoke, I asked my husband if he would be okay with visiting Mother after giving our daughter the sad news. While not one of Amma’s followers, he was willing. Like me, he felt that anything to help with this painful task was worth a try. The next morning, as planned, we shared the news of our breakup with our daughter when she awoke. Of course, she was devastated. We all were. Based on advice given by counselors, we tried to normalize her experience as best we could. We went to our favorite local café for breakfast and afterwards headed out to see Amma.

deeply appreciate Amma for the work that she has done for me personally, and for the exceptional work she continues to do throughout the world. To learn more about Amma’s Chicago MA Center (MACC), located at 41W501 Keslinger Rd, Elburn, IL 60119, you can email chicago@macenters.org, or call 630387-5077.

As with each of her events, there were people everywhere – volunteers and seekers alike. We lined up and got a number. No sooner had we got our number and sat down that my daughter burst into tears. I held her as she cried from the deep well of sadness that she was feeling. At first glance, my husband became distraught and suggested that we take her out of the area – that being there was upsetting her. My inner knowing told me otherwise, and I assured him that she was crying because she was in a safe and nurturing place that allowed her to freely express herself. I explained that she was experiencing what she needed in this sacred space, and that we should not try to quiet her, nor whisk her away. Several hours later we received our blessing and a hug from Amma. I’ll never forget the compassion that I felt she held for us. No words were spoken. No rhetoric shared about the day’s events, but I had a sense that she knew. She gave my daughter and me a warm, welcoming hug, but stopped at my ex-husband. She spent several moments with him and placed a powder upon his forehead. Being unfamiliar with the ways of her tradition, I had no idea what the meaning of this gesture was, but I knew that she had given him an additional blessing. Somehow, somewhere in her silence, she knew he was grieving and needed an extra dose of strength, compassion and reassurance. In that moment she spent with us, she graced us all with a greater sense of peace. Fast-forward five years, and here I sit in the backseat of a rental car. My husband, once my enemy, is now my friend, and my daughter is feeling safe and secure again. I have no doubt that she has suffered great loss in the family breakup. We all have. But I see also the way in which she has come to know another kind of family. One in which brokenness has been mended and a choice other than bitterness has been made. While I have learned that divorce is incredibly traumatic and painful for the children involved, whether eight or eighty, I know that this situation was touched with grace. While I don’t consciously know how much Amma was responsible for of the healing we have experienced around it, I know that her role was immense and her grace, palatable. I

ASTROLOGY BASICS 101 Retrogrades

by Kaye Berjot Many of us are familiar with retrogrades because of the Mercury retrogrades that happen three to four times each year for approximately three weeks at a time. During times of retrograde planets, most of us are told to watch out for any number of things, or to not do something until the planet comes out of its shadow. This can be confusing for many because life just doesn’t stop because a planet goes into retrograde. In fact, it would almost appear as though life speeds up and asks us to make quick decisions, because opportunities are presenting themselves faster than we are able to react. I wanted to talk about retrogrades during this article because in the month of August we have Venus retrograde for several weeks, and for some it could be overwhelming, especially when we are seeking Venus oriented goals such as love, wealth, and values. So what are retrogrades? Retrogrades are when planets seem to go backwards in the sky. I know that’s a pretty generic explanation, but this is how most texts describe it, and I wouldn’t be thorough if I didn’t at the very least mention it. All of the planets are capable of going retrograde. The context of the retrograde depends upon the house and the sign of which planet is retrograding. When retrogrades occur in mundane astrology, we analyze them as we would transits. Remember that transits occur when a planet stops at a degree that is conjunct, trine, sextile, or in opposition to a natal planet in your chart, or when it moves through a particular house in your chart that may or may not have an aspect. In addition, retrogrades can also occur in your natal birth chart. In the natal birth chart there will be a slightly different set of criteria for analyzing the meaning of the retrograde. If you would like to revisit the article on Aspects and Transits you can find it on the Conscious Community Magazine website. Retrograde periods are times when we are able to re-evaluate our course of action. They can bring back people from our past, opportunities that we passed up, or situations that can sometimes be a bit uncomfortable. In any case, retrogrades provide us with the opportunity to take a deeper look from a different point of view. For me, I like to think of them as a time when I can get a do-over. I may or may not choose to act upon whatever situation is being presented, but at a minimum, I get the opportunity to confirm, validate, and in some cases select a different option from the one that I’d previously chosen. Let’s take a look at how you might experience a retrograding planet. 10 Conscious Community - August 2015

Mercury retrograde might be experienced as a lack of information that is needed in order to make an informed decision. It might require you to dig a little deeper to find the relevant information, so you might spend a lot more time researching and asking questions, not only of others but of yourself. A Mercury retrograde in your sixth house might have you asking questions about the best ways to get healthy, so rather than invest in quick fixes you might put in the effort to find many different options, so that you can eventually make the best choice for you. Saturn retrograde could have you addressing stability and concreteness. When Saturn is direct and transiting a sign, some say that it removes components that no longer serve your purpose towards your higher mission. When it’s retrograde, the question becomes about whether or not we’ve overlooked a component that was unhealthy. When Saturn was retrograding through Scorpio it was asking profound questions such as, “are you sure this is what you really want?” When we have a retrograding Uranus, expect sweeping changes. Some of those changes we will like, and some we won’t. When Uranus does go retrograde, you are being asked about reinvention, and how you might want to move forward with reshaping a particular area of your life. You might be faced with circumstances beyond your control that require you to reorient yourself, or to become strategic with your invention. It’s hard to believe that Jupiter, the planet of growth, expansion, and good luck, could go retrograde, yet it happens as was the case in the latter part of 2014 until early 2015. During those times there is a definite lack, and it is felt immensely. Depending upon the area of your chart that is being impacted, you can feel like it’s an uphill battle, and that no matter how hard you try to understand a situation that you just never quite get it right. Jupiter is associated with Sagittarius, which is all about the ability to understand and gain wisdom. So if you have retrograde Jupiter transiting your eighth house, you may have struggled with understanding other peoples’ values with regards to income, transformation, or overall growth. You could also have experienced this as questioning whether or not the values of others were beneficial to your own growth. Pluto retrograde can be difficult for many because it asks you to re-evaluate how you’ve changed, and/or what you still need to change. Many of us want to change situations or elements of ourselves, yet we find it difficult to do when we don’t really know what actually needs to be changed. In other words, it is hard for us to see our own fly in the ointment. Therefore, a Pluto

retrograde gives us the opportunity to take a look with an actual magnifying glass. This is usually a time when we have our “aha” moments as well as our “uh oh” moments. Venus retrograde as previously mentioned is about self-worth, values, and yes, love. During these times we reexamine what we hold dear, and the importance of those things. It can be a time of bringing back past loves, unrequited love, or love of something that we once greatly valued. It can act like Neptune in that way. It restores faith in lost opportunities.

I like to think of Neptune retrograde as being a time when the rose-colored glasses come off. During this time, you might recognize that what you previously believed to be real wasn’t so real after all. It’s an awakening of sorts because it causes you to see qualities of yourself, situations, or others that you’d previously turned a blind eye to. It can be quite a sobering effect. Mars retrograde, to me, is like Mercury retrograde times 10. It’s a time when you feel like you’re stuck in quicksand, and for every step forward you try to make you take three steps back. Your energy can be low during these retrogrades, and thank goodness they don’t happen very often because nothing seems to move quickly. These are great times to meditate in because it’s as if the universe is requiring you to sit still and find yourself. When planets are finished retrograding they go stationary direct. This means that they stop moving “backwards” so to speak. After this stationary direct period they will go over previous ground. So whatever decisions were up for reevaluation during the retrograde will be allowed to proceed once the planet has reached the point at which it originally went retrograde.

An example of this is Venus going retrograde at 0 degrees of Virgo in the latter part of July. It will stationary direct (begin moving forward) at 14 degrees Leo in early September, and will not return to 0 degrees Virgo until early October. The period between 14 degrees Leo and 0 degrees Virgo, after the stationary direct period, is what we call the shadow period; basically the planet is retracing its steps. So take a look at what was transpiring during the latter part of June, when Venus was at 14 degrees Leo the first time, to get an idea of what is coming up for reevaluation during the Venus retrograde. As always, thank you for supporting the Conscious Community Magazine family. And until next time, be kind to yourself during these retrograde moments.

What it Means to be Vulnerable by Blair McKissock, MSEd, RYT “Horses quickly anchor us, making it difficult to escape from some of the basic realities of our existence. Around them we are confronted with existential truths and with matters of life and death.” Adele von Rust McCormick, Ph.D. Horse Sense and the Human Heart

This quote has been a guidepost for most of my work in equine assisted learning and therapy. When someone asks what you do for a living, it can be hard to sum it up in one sentence, or not make a long story longer. It is hard to explain why horses help humans in the way that they do, especially when my background is not like most. Though the last 15 years has been solely working with horses, my career didn’t start off with them. I have been a rider my whole life, yet my first foray into animal assisted work was with dolphins working at the Dolphin Research Center in Florida. It was the first time I was exposed to the idea of animal assisted therapy. It was also the first time I was ever intimidated by something. The dolphin I worked with was named Little Bit, and he was anything but little; and a little wild. There was something about being with him that no matter how nervous I was, swimming with him was absolute freedom. I have felt that same feeling with the horses. When there is conscious awareness of the fact that control is not real, that if I really trust the horse, there is freedom in that as well. What I didn’t know then, that I am now beginning to understand, is the idea of letting go. Not just letting go of an emotion or a past situation, but really opening up and letting go of control. There is something that shifts within our soul when we are faced with the notion that we are not in control. That is the feeling of vulnerability. It’s hard not to look at the way a horse or even a dolphin lives in the wild. They are at all times vulnerable to so many outside forces that they cannot control. Yet they don’t experience the same kind of anxiety humans feel as we go through our lives. There is real danger in the wild when each moment revolves around life or death survival, yet they still live their lives sharing and having relationships. When we truly connect with animals or people three things have to happen; we have to let go, we have to open up to being seen, and we have to acknowledge how we really feel. The horses and dolphins, or whatever animals I have worked with have tried to teach this. For all of our modern conveniences that keep us safe, like our homes, electricity, phones, and even weapons, can all fail. When 12 Conscious Community - August 2015

we work with horses there can be an energy of dominance and control but it isn’t real. If you were to see a fight between a horse and a human, who would win? It’s obvious to most people that humans cannot truly control anything, yet the fear of our vulnerability tries to tell us otherwise. Through that fear we hide and hold on so tightly to something that doesn’t exist, that we miss what life can really offer us. The hardest part is letting go. Yet when we let go, release fear and become vulnerable, there is freedom in that we no longer have to hide. When we no longer hide, then we can be seen. When a horse looks at us, there is a fear that they may see us for who we really are. They may see that on some level that we fear their power, or that we realize how small we are. You know when someone really “sees” you, it feels intimidating. Yet if we can just acknowledge that we feel naked and there is fear there, then we come into a state of congruence. When we are seen by another, we expose our soul to them. We reveal the fact that we are human, imperfect, and full of guilt, shame, and fear. We discover that so is everyone else. We reveal that we are not made of super-reinforced carbon but we are made of flesh and bone, and we can be hurt. There is fear in the feeling that we are not adequate, and that if someone sees us for what we truly are that they will learn the truth of that. Brene Brown, renowned author and speaker on vulnerability, tells us that, “We cultivate love when we allow our most vulnerable and powerful selves to be deeply seen and known…” If we are motivated enough by our desire to connect with another living being, then we have to be seen. We have to open up our heart to all the ugliness and beauty that resides within us and let it show. What makes it easier to do that with a horse is that they don’t judge us. When we let what is inside match what is outside, then they know they can trust us, and in return will connect with us. That connection is unlike anything else. If we can experience that level of connection and vulnerability in the barn, then we have a chance of carrying it out into the real world, knowing that there are people who will do the same. Those that judge us for our vulnerabilities lack the courage to be vulnerable themselves. The picture is of a young girl and her project horse. This horse was an amazing jumper, but did not like humans very much. She had thrown every rider, and had seriously injured one, yet this young girl knew that there was something else there, and she needed something from the human first. When this young girl brought the mare home, she began just spending time with her loose in the arena. She spent time with the mare with no

expectations, talking to her and connecting with her. This went on for quite a while before she even got on her. When the girl got on the first time she admitted to the mare that she was afraid; not of the mare hurting her, she was afraid that she was not a good enough rider. There was a shift that happened in that minute. The mare was able to see the girl and all her vulnerabilities, and in return the mare gave her trust, and allowed her to see how loving she really could be. We were doing a photo shoot for the yoga book, and I noticed that the girl was just walking the mare around reading a book. I asked her about the mare, and while she told me the story, the mare softened even more. So we asked her to demonstrate her favorite pose, and she did, but this time she let go of the reins, and let the mare walk. There was nothing but complete mutual trust in that photo. They allowed us to see them being vulnerable together. When people ask me why I do what I do, I still have a hard time putting into words the deep level of trust and connection that is possible when we work with horses and other animals. I do know that it starts with letting go of my tight grip on control, because experience tells me that when I let go of my fear and trust, that’s when the really amazing things happen, and the fear of the unknown goes away. I know it has an element of opening up and being vulnerable, because that is the only state in which a true exchange and connection can happen. Experience tells me that when connection happens on that level it “feels” different. I also know that it takes the ability to let others see me for who I am from the inside out. I know this because experience tells me that when I let a horse see me, they let me see them. In that moment, I know that we are all the same. From the Heart

Somebody Needs the Wood by Alan Cohen An eccentric and likeable guy in my town has literally taken upon himself the admonition to bear the cross. Years ago John fashioned a small crucifix out of wood, and since then he walks regularly along the side of a highway carrying the cross. He used to bear the cross on one shoulder while waving and blowing kisses to the folks in passing cars. Local people know John, and many blow kisses back, or toot their horn to say hello as they drive past him. Recently John performed a penance upgrade and fashioned a much larger cross out of PVC pipe. Now he needs two hands to hold the cross rather than one. The sad result of his new format is that his arms are occupied with the cross and he is no longer free to wave and blow kisses. Personally, I was disappointed at his trade-in. I liked him better when he was broadcasting love. When your arms and shoulders are taken up carrying a cross, you can’t give the love you are capable of sharing when they are free. Selfimposed suffering is not a gift to the world. It renders you less capable of loving, not more. Could it finally be time in the evolution of humanity to revisit our belief in the value of suffering? Many religions and belief systems accept suffering as an inescapable reality, and even glorify it. Christians stoically sing of bearing the old rugged cross. Hindus justify poverty and disease as the paying off of karma. The answer to the question, “How many Jewish mothers does it take to change a light bulb?” is, “None—but that’s all right, I’ll just sit here in the dark.” By a bizarre twist of reason, pain has been forged into a breastplate for the downtrodden. Does suffering really lead to happiness? Does sorrow really grow peace? Does self-punishment really pave the way to heaven? Whatever we focus on, we get more of. Attention is intention. Apple seeds do not grow oranges, pain does not beget peace, and fear does not lead to love. Sorrow is the parent of sorrow, and joy is the parent of joy. One does not create unlike itself. I saw an interesting movie that reveals a fascinating dynamic nested in the recesses of the human psyche. The Brass Teapot tells of a young couple severely strapped for cash. Then they come upon a genie-type teapot that produces money for them— but only when they experience pain. A little pain begets a little money, and a severe pain begets big bucks. So the couple starts punishing themselves, then each other, then other people, to grow their bank account. I am not necessarily recommending the movie, which contains some silly violence, yet I did find the premise fascinating. Many people believe that they deserve good things only if they suffer to get them. You must struggle and sacrifice to earn enough money to have what you want. If 14 Conscious Community - August 2015

you don’t, you are a slacker. Ease equals cheating. Pain buys worthiness. Are we ready to emerge from the dark ages of crucifixion? Is there more to life than putting yourself down so you can build others up? Do you really have to lose to win? In the film Straight Talk, Dolly Parton plays a radio talk show host who gives listeners a dose of good old country wisdom. When one caller complains about her predicament to the point of glorifying it, Dolly’s character tells her, “Get down off the cross, honey. Somebody needs the wood.” There are better things you can do with the energy you invest in suffering. You could actually be happy. Strange as the concept sounds, you are not here to struggle. You are here to experience joy. If this notion seems confrontive or self-indulgent, you prove my point. To expect anything less of life than well-being is a compromise none of us can afford to make. When my friend Lou was a young man, he entered a monastery. There he was taught to mortify the flesh. The monks were given leather straps and instructed to beat themselves daily. They wore their undershorts while showering so as not to rile their passions. Meanwhile many of them were engaging in homosexual activities behind closed doors. You cannot beat yourself into goodness. What you suppress you empower. Lou left the monastery to become a public high school teacher, where he instituted a class called Humanities, in which he treated the students as important, intelligent, loving, capable people. He set up creative opportunities for them to express themselves and do community service. The students themselves became the curriculum, and they loved it. Lou’s goal was to find, draw forth, and celebrate the best in each person. As a result, he was voted best teacher every year. Lou and I shared a house, and during that time he regularly received phone calls from former students telling him that his class above all others had prepared them for life. Crucifixion does not prepare you for life. It ends it. We are here to live, not die. When death comes, it should signal the end of a life well lived. Today would be the perfect day to begin that life. Alan Cohen is the author of many inspirational books. How to Kick-Start a Vegetarian Diet by Romnia Vintila Vegetarianism has become a popular lifestyle these days, and not shockingly so. As you move to raise your vibration in the spiritual realm, you must really start taking care of your body too. Your body is truly your temple, and whatever you ingest can have effects on your thoughts, emotions, and of course, physical abilities. It is no longer a material need, but also a spiritual need. Food can be sacred in this way. Try to eat mindfully and consume as many whole foods as possible. In a society where processed food reigns, it can be that much harder to accomplish these goals. I started being a vegetarian about nine years ago, and it was a very conscious decision. My reasons for doing this varied and are still complex. When I changed my diet, I immediately experienced a surge in energy levels. This went on for days. It was not a spike and a crash later, just constant energy. I was very happy with this. If vegetarianism interests you, give it a go and see how you feel. How do we make the lifestyle change to become vegetarian? Find out what motivates you. Make a list of goals, and implement them in simple, easy ways. Change can be difficult so go easy on yourself. Taking small steps that you can follow through on is much better than taking a big leap you cannot commit to. You may become overwhelmed by the prospect and go back to old habits. To truly inspire a change, be willing to incorporate it into your life, but also have a strong reason to do so. When I first became vegetarian, I was still eating French Fries and all sorts of junk food, which is okay in moderation. But I realized it’s possible to have an unhealthy diet, even as a vegetarian. Here are a few tips for becoming vegetarian: • Do some research on the healthy types of protein. For example, soy protein isolate is processed and not a whole food. • Try veggie burgers like Dr. Praeger’s that have whole foods in them and lots of organic veggies, whole soy, etc. • Check ingredients often. If it doesn’t look good to you, it probably isn’t. • Start slowly, and build up to cooking for yourself with organic tofu, seitan, or other plant-based proteins. • Start with easy, quick recipes. For example, make stir-fry with frozen veggies if you’re short on time. • Skim through vegetarian cookbooks and make a list before going shopping. • It’s important to know which restaurants offer vegetarian options. Ask your vegetarian friends for tips and advice on where they eat out • Freezing bulk products will save you time. If you make a soup or stew, it can be frozen and eaten later. 16 Conscious Community - August 2015

• Bargain brands or sale items are not always the best when eating vegetarian. Invest more money in your food, and your body will thank you later. • If you’re trying to avoid animal products completely, look out for items containing hidden animal-derived ingredients such as gelatin (pesto and desserts often contain gelatin). If you are considering a plant-based diet, I recommend reading The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II, MD. This book looks at the way of life of the Chinese population, which consumes a large number of plant-based proteins, vegetables and rice. It is a good starting point to start understanding the benefits of a plant-based diet. The book also discusses the correlation between diet and disease. “Every time you eat or drink, you are either feeding disease or fighting it.” Heather Morgan, MS, NLC Not everything is for everyone. We all have different needs, different body constitutions and conditions that may impact our choices and ability to fit into a vegetarian diet. If vegetarianism does not make your body and mind feel good, it cannot benefit you. Being open-minded and experimenting with your own needs is part of the journey. Changing your diet may feel odd in the beginning. Be patient as the body begins to detoxify itself. Once you start eating healthier, you may initially feel worse before feeling better. This is often part of the process. Overall, whatever the results are for you, it does not have to feel like a failure. It’s another experience and something you can say you tried along the way. And also, don’t forget to have fun! *This article is not intended to be used as medical advice or instruction and is purely informative. The Shared Heart

N ew D i m e n s i o n s o f R e l a t i o n s h i p by Joyce and Barry Vissell

Please Hold Me When I was a little girl, I remember getting my feelings hurt by different things that would happen in my family. Perhaps it was my brother’s teasing, my father’s tone of voice, some words from my mother, or a tension I felt over a circumstance I had nothing to do with, and yet could feel. I was and still am a sensitive person. I felt much loved in my family, and at the same time occasionally I felt hurt to the point of crying. As soon as my father saw my tears, he would point his finger at my room and say, “Those feelings are private and you need to go to your room.” I never remember being held when I would cry. I was always sent to my room. It was incredibly lonely to be crying alone. I felt as if no one understood me, and I had the horrible feeling that there must be something very wrong with me. One day, when I was nine years old, I was crying in my room after being told to go there. I cannot remember what had happened in my family, yet I do know that my tears were flowing in abundance and I felt very sad. It was at this point that I had my first experience of God’s love. I remember an incredibly loving presence coming to me and surrounding me in peace and assurance. Then these words were spoken to me, “Right now there is a boy growing up who will know how to hold you when you cry. You will recognize him as he will be tall with dark hair and will become a doctor.” At the time, what stood out to me was that someone would actually hold me when I was crying. That one fact brought such a joy to my child’s heart. My life was completely different after that experience, as I always trusted that in time my tearful feelings could be held. Up to this point my pediatrician was concerned about me. As he held my little hand and looked into my pale, thin face he told my mother that I was not thriving, and that something must be wrong with me. Even now I remember hearing his words and wondering what was so wrong. After the experience of being told that I would meet a boy that would know how to hold me, I started to thrive and within six months this doctor told my mother that he was no longer concerned about me. The fact that this boy was going to be a doctor, or was tall, or had dark hair, had no effect on me until I started dating. As a child, the only thing that mattered was that he would hold me and accept my tears. I met this wonderful boy nine years after this experience, and 18 Conscious Community - August 2015

we have been together now for 50 years. Barry holds me when I occasionally cry, and it is such a wonderful feeling to be held when tears come to my eyes. I feel so safe and understood just being held. It is so important to me and makes all the difference in my life. I once saw a woman in counseling who was with a man who ignored her tears. If she was crying he didn’t say anything negative, he just walked out of the room. I coached her to ask him to hold her, yet he said he just couldn’t, and continued to walk out of the room. It was so painful that her tears were ignored that the woman left the relationship. Then this same woman was with another man who got angry when she cried. He felt as if her tears were his fault, and it angered him greatly to see her cry. He was a physically strong man and would stand over her in a threatening position and tell her to stop crying. Even if she told him her tears were not his fault and she just wanted to be held, he got even angrier. Once again she left this relationship. Then she was with a man who also did not like her tears. Every time she cried he would say, “This relationship is not working. Look how I make you cry. We should break up.” He did break up with her after one of her times of crying. It is to this woman’s great credit that she tried one more time to be with a man. She finally found a man who could hold her while she cried. He had no idea why she was crying, and he had no idea what he should say. In silence he just held her and told her that he loved her. This action of his healed the other experiences, and she was able to truly open up to this man, and be vulnerable and feel trusting. That relationship really worked. There were great qualities in the men of the other relationships, yet the fact that they either ignored, got angry, or shamed her for her tears caused the breakup. The last man, whom she married, he accepted her tears and held her. That is how important it is to hold someone when they cry. This kind of holding applies to all relationships, family members, and friends, as well as intimate, romantic relationships. You do not have to know what to say when someone is crying. You do not have to know how to fix them, or how to bring a smile to their face. The worst thing to say while holding them is something like, “If you would have listened to me, this wouldn’t have happened,” or, “I know exactly what you should do the next time.” The worst thing of all to say is, “I think you are too sensitive.” The very best is to just reach out and hold them, and let them know that they are loved. Accept the tears and know that

you are giving a very high and noble gift to this person. It is a gift that could make all the difference between them not thriving, and truly thriving in this life. I am living proof of that. THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS August... Money, Power, Authority by Elizabeth Summers August, the Eighth month of our calendar year, finds our energy picking up in a more dynamic way from the slow-down of July. The practical pace of life accelerates and mental reasoning about the “now” kicks in. The Number Eight applies to the human condition in more ways that just a calendar monthly influence. The perfect metaphor for the Number Eight is Frosty the Snowman. The Number Eight represents two worlds-the material and the spiritual. Therefore, it is like two circles touching each other and working together just like Frosty. Not only does the natural physical form of Frosty look like the symbol Eight but the fact that he has such a cold exterior yet warm, feeling heart only accentuates the similarities. Numbers are simply codes of information like a language. The codes, we call letters associated with the Number Eight are H, Q, and Z. There should be only one of these letters in a birth name to be balanced in its experience. However, where more Eights appear, then life, especially in younger years can be a bit challenging…money and emotional power-wise. Number Eight personalities and energies express their love from a more mental and logical level and because of their deep and intense nature, others, on first approach, may feel that Number Eights are emotionally cold individuals. This obviously can lead to misunderstandings in the early part of relationships. However, anyone who believes the Number Eight to be uncaring and lacking in affection is in for a big surprise! Ironically, when it comes to love with passion, intensity and warmth, Number Eight wins the prize. He would most likely be attracted to those born in January, March, May or October with birthdays Three, Four, Six or Eight. Although not inclined to be extravagant, Number Eight individuals are extremely generous. Number Eight is noted for large gestures such as donating money to institutions or becoming a collector. Striving to maintain balance between family and career, career usually winning out, provides the Number Eight personality with those trappings to loved ones that show off the fruits of its labors The latest model car, the grandest house in town are all to show the world that Number Eight has the money and power to accomplish. Whether the Number Eight is one’s birthday number, emotional 20 Conscious Community - August 2015

self number from birth name vowels or Life Path Number from month, day, year totals, this born executive is inclined to start managing in whatever situation he steps into whether it be family, homemaker, corporate office or bank. Number Eight dislikes waste, does not like to be rushed or controlled in any way, and usually displays fairness in its dealings. As a boss, he is usually a responsible leader to his workers and co-workers and they will have a tendency to trust his integrity. This manager operates in a systematic and methodical style using wise and practical judgment. Partnerships are agreeable as long as Eight controls the interest and deals with all the finances. Thus, the business world usually attracts the Number Eight where he can put into play his progressive and creative ideas. However, Number Eight is also the Number of Saturn, the Lord of Karma so caution must prevail. The adage “as you sew so shall you reap” applies intensely and many an unethical “creative idea” has brought Number Eight to his financial “knees” in bankruptcy court! In ancient Tarot symbols, Number Eight is the STRENGTH card or the JUSTICE card depending on the deck used. Either way, human justice is required. The motto for Number Eight is “I use” so balance, justice and strength are required in all human relationships. Children born in August seem, from the beginning, to have an older person’s head on its shoulders. There will be a tendency to associate with children older than itself. Of all children, the Number Eight birth month child is the most misunderstood and succumbs to bouts of loneliness. Parents need to encourage their Number Eight child to take an open and positive approach to life. Overcoming the negativity associated with the Saturnian influence is very important as they seem to be affected by stressful circumstances more than anything else. This influence usually lasts between ages birth to twenty-eight. The actual day of birth shows more clearly the energy of Number Eight greatly influencing life energetically between ages thirty and fifty-five. Whether the birthday number is eight, seventeen or twenty-six some basic temperament issues apply. Although highly skilled as a manager and executive, the ability to be a fine judge of character is in play. Although more fixed in their ways, this Number vacillates between extremes of thrift one minute and extravagance the next. Should the birth number

be seventeen, writing ability and analytical skills get added into the character traits. This Number should actually strive to be the boss and get others to oversee the details of day-to-day operations.

The more creative or artistic of the Eights is number Twenty-Six. This energy likes dealing with humanity’s desire for the better, material, comforts in life. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Dakota Sioux call the full moon in August “Moon When All Things Ripen.” Yes, the harvests have begun and the fullness of summer is here! Enjoy the fresh, local fruits and vegetables! Who could ask for more? Well, most people could. And most people do want more, and more. We want more money and more things we don’t need. We want to travel, we want to party, and we want recognition. We want what other people have, we’re jealous if we don’t have it and we’re angry if we can’t get it. Vedanta teaches that there are two types of happiness. Transient happiness comes from the material world. Internal happiness is earned from doing the hard work of spiritual practices. Simply put, we’re not happy because we’re looking outside of ourselves for happiness. The wise person will seek fulfillment or contentment within. Contentment, or santosha, is one of the internal observances, or niyamas, that Yoga suggests we follow to further our progress on the spiritual path. While my English language dictionary equates contentment with happiness, Yoga distinguishes them saying we must first cultivate contentment then internal happiness will follow. The Yoga Sutras say, “From contentment happiness is gained.” But there’s more: “supreme happiness comes after the cessation of desires.” So, first be content with what we have then stop wanting more. Vyasa, the esteemed Yoga Sutras commentator, said nothing in the world brings pleasure as much as eliminating all of one’s desires. Desires trap the mind and block it from spiritual progress. Once desires are removed the mind can stabilize and turn inward. Then the seeker moves towards internal happiness, or fullness. In Sanskrit “fullness” is purna, alternatively transliterated as “satisfied, abundant, fulfilled, complete, or perfection. One vedantic book, the Ishopanishad says that humans are perpetually seeking perfection or fullness. The problem is we’re looking in the wrong place. Vedanta teaches that fullness is always there and available if we look in the right place, within the heart. 22 Conscious Community - August 2015

Yoga’s basic tenet is mastery over the vast field of the mind through contemplation and meditation. We all need things in this life, but they don’t bring us long-lasting, unsurpassed happiness. Try to disconnect from the desires for them and train yourself to eliminate cravings. The more you do it the more it will work. By prevailing over them rather than letting desires prevail over you, your mind will attain satisfaction, contentment and fullness. Jesus said, “No one can become my disciple if they do not give up all possessions” (Luke 14:33). Likewise, the Ishopanishad says to “not lust after any man’s wealth.” It goes on to say that we should see God in all things and all people, and never, at any time, stray from this concept. “In order to tread the path of divine knowledge, night and day the aspirant should imbibe the truth that God is omnipresent.”

“Take this fact unto thy soul, God dwells in thee. It is no metaphor, nor parable. It is unknown to thousands, and to thee. Yet there is God.” Gnothi Seauton, Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Ishopanishad further teaches us not be jealous of anyone. “The wise man beholds all beings in the Self and the Self in all beings; for that reason he does not hate anyone.” We simply cannot be jealous if we regard the oneness of all beings. Jealousy for something another person has can be all consuming. Striving creates anxiety, which only distracts us from the inner work of seeking peace and a genuine, inner happiness. Train the mind to be content even during feelings of jealousy. Look to others who have truly achieved happiness as a beacon or example, as in the song above. How often do you feel malcontented? Do you actively admit being jealous? Give up the attitude of jealousy, lest your spirit be burdened. Do you carelessly say “I hate” this or that. This only increases discontent. Practice self-awareness of these thoughts in the mind and do not let them stay rooted. Try not to yield to them, but abandon them. We suffer more from the process of coveting than we do from going without the things we desire!

Humanistic psychologists trust in peoples’ inherent goodness. They agree that people constantly strive for increased levels of functioning and that people have free choice. This is consistent with Eastern ideas. When I feel jealous, disappointed or malcontent, I exercise my free choice and appreciate the fullness of my life. I take some slow, deep breaths; adjust my thoughts; remember my loved ones and my duty toward them…my heart is full! As I also enjoy the fullness of summer and the warmer days, I count my blessings. I enjoy and appreciate these few summer weeks that I long for in the middle of the cold winter. I am overjoyed by the fullness of the simple joys of summer when I look around at the lovely landscapes, the canopies of lush trees and the multitude of colorful flowers.

“The wind is low, the birds will sing, that you are part of everything… Won’t you open up your eyes? Look around…” Dear Prudence, The Beatles

CyberWeave: Spirituality and the Internet by Mary Montgomery

I Found My Safe Power Place at The Afterlife Conference In June, I had the privilege of taking a spiritual road trip with Donna, one of my Inward Journey (inwardjourney.com) pals. You can read about all the delightful spiritual adventures we had on our way to Norfolk, Virginia and back at my new blog at SpiritualTravelerGuides.com. This column is about our destination: The Fifth Annual Afterlife Awareness Conference. The Afterlife Conference featured everything from expanded training in psychic development and after-death communication to teachings on out-of-body exploration, conscious dying, and conscious grieving. The goal was to blur the boundaries between allopathic medicine and alternative healing; between intuitive experience and scientific research; and between religious traditions and a spirituality of oneness, all with the objective of increasing awareness of life beyond the physical body. The Afterlife website (afterlifeconference.com) offers these very accurate descriptions: • Where mystics, medics, scholars and spiritualists gather to share their wisdom. • Where shamans break bread with scientists to create common ground. • Where sacred ceremonies, and inter-dimensional encounters are an everyday affair. If you want to get a visual flavor of what happened at the conference, travel on over to their website and check out the slideshow, “Scenes from our 2015 Conference.” If you want to get a more in-depth experience, you can purchase a Livestream Broadcast of some (but not all) of the workshops and presentations. Whatever you do, please subscribe so that you will be in the loop about next year’s conference, which will be held May 12-15, 2016 in St. Louis, Missouri. Hey! That’s only a stone’s throw from Chicago! My column this month focuses on a few of the events that had the most impact on me. The Afterlife Conference is a mix of the academic and the experiential. Last year, during the Fourth Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon, I focused more on the academic. This year, I made a point of focusing on the experiential. My most profound experiences this year occurred during two shamanic workshops and the shamanic closing ceremony. Let me share a taste of those experiences with you: 24 Conscious Community - August 2015

One of those experiences occurred during “Visiting the Afterlife: Shamanic Practices and Rituals,” a workshop led by Linda Fitch (lindalfitch.com), a practicing shaman who has studied with the Inka of Peru for over 16 years. The description of the workshop is what attracted me: “Shamanism speaks of an upper world, middle world, lower world, and many levels in between. Linda will explain the geography of the Shamanic afterlife, and guide participants in a journey to visit those realms.” It was the actual experience, however, that knocked my socks off. Linda began by giving us a few insights into shamanic views and practices. Here are a few of her insights: • Death is like a lover and gives wisdom. • The drum is used in shamanic ceremonies because it changes your brain waves, taking them from low alpha to the upper levels of theta. The rattles are used to break up energy. • Are we making it all up when we have these shamanic experiences? “You are,” said Linda, “but we are making up our whole world.” The rest of the workshop focused on profound experiences. I will tell you about two of them. During the first of these experiences, Linda used her drum to help us create our Safe Place, which is also our Power Place. We were asked to think of a place in our life where we felt very safe and protected. I immediately went back to my childhood days during summers spent in southwestern Michigan. There was a grove of adolescent blue spruce pines near the family cottage. I used to sneak off and go there often. There was a particular clearing that I was fond of. I would lie on a patch of soft, velvet moss and feel like I was becoming one with the wind rustling through the pines. Ah! That is where I went and followed Linda’s instructions as she helped us create the boundaries that secured our Safe Power Places from unwanted visitors or vibrations. It is the place where we can seek help from our guides, handing over our desires and concerns; actually delegating them to these spirits, and then letting them go. Now I find myself going there often. Linda called our second experience “A Journey with Death.” This was our opportunity to dialogue with death and learn what it had to teach us. During the ceremony, Linda guided us with directions and gentle questions as she drummed. We were told to see a house and go into it. There was a hallway and a door with death’s name on it. We opened that door and met death. Linda’s

questions: “How does death show up for you?” “What does death want from you right now?” “What needs to be let go of, pruned away?” “What needs to be born?” “What can you do for death?” and “What teaching about death do you need to know?” Then Linda urged us to make a request to death, and ask about something you want more wisdom about.

out to form the triangle. We put one hand on the shoulder of the person in front of us and left the other free so we could push the energy during the ceremony. By holding each other’s shoulders we were forming an energy circuit. Information then could travel through us and create closure. We formed our triangle. Jan called in the spirits using her voice and a rattle. Then she drummed, making contact with the spirit of Luke. She brought messages from Luke to his parents, and a sense of closure. Then Jan drummed again and asked us to use our free hands to help push the young man over to the other side. We stepped forward and pushed. We stepped back. Then we stepped forward and pushed again. Then Jan did something she had never done before; she told us that the spirits had told her to continue pushing, each of us calling out the name of our loved ones who had committed suicide. This, she assured, would be of service to them and to us, and that is what we all did. I heard a cacophony of names around me as I voiced the name of my Julie. We ended by toning and wrapping our beloveds in the sound of our voices. Personally, I knew that my Julie was already on the other side and progressing there very well. So, I believe that for her this was a wonderful energy boost—and can’t we all use some of that?

My own journey with death was amazing and deep. Here is one excerpt from the notes I made during that experience: I go to a Native American longhouse like one you’d see in the Seattle area. I enter and see a doorway with an otter skin curtain. I pull that back. I first see a shaman wearing a fur headdress and robes. He turns into a dolphin and invites me to travel with him. I become a dolphin too. We are swimming through energy, not water. The message comes to me: “Go with the flow. Let go of preconceived notions of what things are supposed to be like. Show others how to go with the flow…” Death gives me a gift, a box. I open it up and see a heart, an actual beating human heart. What is this? The message: “It is a new heart of strength and courage…” Oh my! This is amazing! Before sitting down to write this column, I was crying a few tears as I struggled with questions about life and why we have to be on earth in the first place. I cried out for guidance and courage. Now my tears are ones of joy. I had forgotten the impact and messages from this second ceremony. As I reread my notes, I received my gift from death again. This time I must accept this gift. I must take this new heart of strength and courage and gently place it into the core of my being. Another profound experience occurred during the “Pushing Over” Ceremony workshop facilitated by Jan Engels Smith, a shamanic healer who assists individuals in gaining their own personal empowerment. The workshop was designed to help participants make contact with and assist the souls of those who have transitioned via suicide. I have been on the edges of suicide lately. A friend of a friend’s son committed suicide; a young friend attempted suicide, and an older friend seriously considered it before stepping back from the brink. My own stepdaughter’s death certificate states that she died of heart failure, yet we, her family and friends, know different. Julie was physically handicapped, but the more severe handicap was the schizophrenia that struck in college and so clouded her mind. At the age of 41, she simply gave up and stopped eating. We tried to help her, but she slipped through our fingers. This was a good workshop for me to be at. Jan told us that the purpose of the “Pushing Over” Ceremony was for us to gain closure. During the ceremony, a triangle of people is formed. Many of the participants had experiences with suicide, yet because of the size of the group, parents of only one suicide victim were chosen to be at the apex or focus point of the triangle. This mom and dad were in deep grief over the suicide of their son Luke. The rest of us formed slanting rows, fanning

The last profound shamanic experience occurred on the last day of the conference. It was the closing ceremony presided over by Linda Fitch. We gathered in four groups around large rectangles of cloth that were ceremoniously laid down—first black, then blue, then white. Bags and piles of natural materials framed the cloths. As Linda guided us with shamanic prayers, we scattered this variety of materials—rose petals, rice, sage, feathers, seeds, etc., to the earth, the sea, and the sky; and to our ancestors, all four-legged, all two-legged, and ourselves. Then each group folded their cloths into large bundles, and we walked in silent procession down to the banks of the Elizabeth River where we unfolded our bundles and released our offerings. We ended with a blessing and a song—a perfect end to a wonderful conference! My Advice: Make sure you get on the email list (afterlifeconference.com) so you can be informed about next year’s Afterlife Awareness Conference, and for $97 that Livestream Broadcast of the 2015 Conference is priceless. For example, as I wrote this, I was able to re-experience the whole “Pushing Over” Ceremony. Somehow, it was almost as moving as when I actually experienced it. Not all of the workshops could be videotaped. However, the ones that were are wonderful. I’m looking forward to tuning in to some of the events that I didn’t get to go to including “What You Need to Know before you Die,” and “Heaven: A History.” Mary Montgomery’s company, Montgomery Media Enterprises, specializes in public relations, writing projects, and social media development, especially in the non-profit sector. Tarot’s History –

A Unique Look by Vincent Pitisci

I thought it might be appropriate to start this first column with a brief history of the Tarot cards. It is thought the Tarot originated in the 14th or 15th century in Europe. There…I said it. Here’s a better history for you: The Tarot has made more history from 1970 to the present than it has from its entire 500 year lifespan prior to 1970. I can tell you that because I was there. (The 1970s, that is – not the 500 years before that!) So the history I can tell you is firsthand info. How the world was then compared to now. I first got involved with the Tarot in 1969. At that time there was only one Tarot deck readily available; The Tarot of Marseilles, originally published in the 1700s. If you wanted Tarot cards… that’s what you got. That’s all there was. There was no thought of selecting which style of Tarot deck you liked best. Think of 31 Flavors Ice Cream (Baskin Robbins) today, only back then called One Flavor Ice Cream. You want ice cream? Here’s your ice cream. You want Tarot cards? Here’s your Tarot cards. The deck was the Tarot of Marseilles, published by B.P. Grimaud. The cards were of a thicker stock than today’s decks making them harder to handle and shuffle, and the images were not much to look at. The little pamphlet that came with the Tarot of Marseilles deck was confusing and full of misprints as it was translated from French. The little pamphlet didn’t mention anything about using reverse meanings as many do today. So if you learned how to read Tarot cards from the confusing little pamphlet, full of misprints, you didn’t use reverse meanings. Traditional Tarot decks didn’t have interesting images on all the cards as today’s decks do. Traditional deck’s pip cards were set up like today’s playing cards. Just a number of the suit would be displayed on the card; seven (of) swords or five (of) cups and so on. So you were pretty much on your own, yet the consciousness was different back then. We thought of the Tarot cards differently then we do today. At this ancient time in Tarot history; in the year of our Lord 1969 Anno Domini; it was thought that the Tarot cards shuffled themselves through your hands; that the cards had some type of unexplainable intelligence to them. It was also thought then that a piece of chipboard called the Ouija board had sinister power 38 Conscious Community - August 2015

and the planchette really was listening to your questions and answering them as it somehow moved. This was a different era. We proudly wore ridiculous clothing in public like Nehru jackets and bell bottom pants. Cigarette commercials were still on TV. Seat belts weren’t really taken seriously, and drinking and driving was not that big of a deal as long as you didn’t open up your car door and fall out into the street when the officer pulled you over for swerving. If you could talk—you could drive. The country was in a political mess (OK, that’s still the same), with Vietnam and the Hippie movement. LSD and pot were discreet, popular consumer products, and gasoline was only about 40 cents a gallon. In 1968, Stuart R. Kaplan, founder of U.S. Games Systems, Inc. found two different tarot decks that were lost over time, and he put them back on the market. The 1JJ SWISS tarot deck and the Rider-Waite tarot deck. They sold fast. The 1JJ SWISS was originally from the 1800s, and the Rider-Waite was originally published in 1910. The Rider-Waite deck was a more interesting deck because it was the first to have curious images on all the cards, including the pips. This was a time when people were becoming interested in the paranormal. Sybil Leek was the big name in Witchcraft; (she was “Britain’s most famous witch,” according to the BBC.) Zolar and Linda Goodman were the big names in Astrology, and Edgar Cayce was the psychic of all psychics. Throughout the 1970s and ‘80s, various artists started to create new Tarot decks; the Morgan-Greer deck, the Aquarian deck, the Tsigane deck, just to name a few. Some made it, some didn’t. Today they are still making newer decks all the time. Most are modeled after the original Rider-Waite deck. Along with new decks came many new books on the Tarot, all showing different insight and new perceptions of the Tarot cards. So the Tarot has made more changes in the last 45 years than it has in its entire history. Today you have hundreds of different styled Tarot decks to choose from, and many knowledgeable authors on the subject giving great advice from all sorts of different angles. It all seems to work no matter which Tarot decks or books you read from. The definitions of the Tarot cards have also changed over the

years from 1970 to the present. Some of the cards’ definitions were uplifting and happy things like love or money, and some were dark, evil, and even brutal. Meanings like insanity, slander, miscarriage, financial ruin, despair, deception, heartbreak, and even physical death were there at the turn of a card. Meanings of the cards today have a more constructive energy about them; more guidance is seen in the cards instead of a certain fate to come. They seem to offer a healthier type of counsel; a gentler approach to solving issues of concern. A reading was like a game of chance. You never knew if it was going to be a terrible reading or a wonderful one. Only the cards knew that, and they waited patiently for you to ask. No wonder people were afraid to get readings back then! Geez! I can see me back then at age 16 wearing a Nehru jacket, bell bottom pants and wishing I had a Transylvanian accent! Cool! A real Tarot stud muffin! One thing hasn’t changed much over time; that’s the application of the cards in a reading. Our mind-set of a card spread still seems locked into the past. Looking back, we might have progressed further if we focused more on what a card spread really is, instead of concentrating so much on the cards. What’s interesting is the card spread is probably the most important part of the whole process. It’s the map of the question being looked into. Over the years we have put our focus on the cards themselves; we can hold them in our hands; we can look at them and touch them. These things cannot be done with the card spread. Maybe that’s why we haven’t changed it much. We never really see it; we only see the cards that are laid into it. We only see the answers: the cards. Yet we never really see the question: the card spread. The secret to the Tarot’s uncanny ability to make accurate predictions has never been in the cards; it’s been in their application. I doubt that part of its history will ever change.

Sound Matters: by Steven Halpern

Rick Derringer, the Power of Music, and a Path Not Taken If you’re a Baby Boomer, the late 1960s were an amazing time to be alive. I’m grateful that a lot of my most important memories are still crystal clear. Do you remember what you were up to in the summer of ‘69? Living Legends Music, a documentary series shown on our local PBS station, recently featured Rick Derringer, the original “Hang On, Sloopy” pop star who became one of the top rock guitarists on the scene, with the group The McCoys. Suddenly it was flashback city in my living room as I watched Rick talk about how he shifted from pop to rock and blues, when he got an offer to produce an album for the albino blues guitarist from Texas, Johnny Winter. That really resonated for me. You see, on about this date in 1969 I was hanging out with Rick Zehringer (before he changed his name), in his Greenwich Village apartment. We were jamming jazz/rock fusion, trading riffs on guitar, and discussing the healing powers of music! (And yes, it was safe enough for me to walk with my guitar case on the streets of New York.) My good friend, bandmate and mentor Lenny Laks had turned me on to Rick’s new album. Lenny was fronting an innovative classical rock band, and was deep into the music scene in New York City in those days. I was really knocked out by the McCoys album, Human Ball, and helped get Rick and the McCoys booked at the University of Buffalo. I had started reviewing albums and concerts in those days, which allowed 40 Conscious Community - August 2015

me access to interview a number of the musicians who came to town. It was also a great way to get into concerts without buying a ticket. As I interviewed Rick and the guys before their first set, Rick asked me how I had heard about them. When I mentioned Lenny Laks, Rick said, “Then why don’t you come on up and sit in with us on the second set?” I did, and it was a highlight of my early career. We hit it off. He invited me to hang out when I came to New York City, and we spent a few afternoons together. At one point during the documentary, Rick started to demonstrate some of his favorite finger exercises. They were some of the same ones we practiced together. I picked up my guitar and started playing along. Ah, the power of memory!

And Now for the Rest of the Story

When my band, New Chicago Lunche, had come down from Buffalo to record our major label debut album, I got to hang out with Rick again. He invited me to co-produce this fantastic blues guitarist he had just hooked up with. I knew that wasn’t the right direction for me, so I declined. I did, however, play several of his songs, including “Daybreak” from Human Ball, and “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo”, with just about every band I was in until I retired from that world in 1973. A few days later, I borrowed a half-fare airline card from one of my brother’s

friends, and flew out to California for what I planned on being a two-week visit to check out the San Francisco Bay Area jazz/rock scene. As I’ve written earlier, a mystical meditation in a sacred redwood grove changed my life. The rest, as they say, is history. Some of that history is included on AMONG FRIENDS: 1975-2015 (A 40 YEAR RETROSPECTIVE), which you can read more about at StevenHalpern.com/AmongFriends. Since I don’t play trumpet anymore, it’s been wonderful to be able to share a little of my world from before I focused on healing music. (The current Wikipedia entry for me is frustratingly erroneous and outdated; I’ve been trying to correct my listing for years, since my Grammy nomination in 2012.) As I’m writing this today, I opened up our mainstream newspaper during lunch, and was surprised and delighted to find an insightful feature review of AMONG FRIENDS written by awardwinning journalist and music reviewer Paul Liberatore. You can read that here: marinij.com/arts-and-entertainment/20150709/press-play-stevenhalperns-among-friends-more-than-meditative.

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER August 2015

August 2015 Overview The month starts on a Full Moon high. Saturn turns direct on the 2nd, wrapping up loose ends that have been getting in our way. Mars makes a showy entrance into Leo on the 8th. Jupiter makes its annual sign change—into Virgo— on the 11th. Right around that time, we lose sight of this Big Planet in the light of the Sun. Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Venus are retrograde all month, as we question the status quo and clarify values we want to live by. Venus hangs out with Jupiter, most closely on the 4th, with Mercury then Mars joining in. During 2015 Venus makes three conjunctions with Jupiter (July 1 and August 4 in Leo, October 25th in Virgo) and three with Mars (February 22 in Aries, September 1 in Leo, November 2 in Virgo). Note the double dose of Leo-Virgo. The gods Jupiter and Mars were both lovers of Venus. We expect these mythic trysts with the goddess of love, but how does all this play out in our lives? In Leo, generosity of heart is one option, but some people will opt for the soap opera version. The Virgo version will be naturally healthy and serviceoriented (just don’t be too fussy). Mercury moves into efficient Virgo on the 7th, then into collaborative Libra on the 27th. Virgo’s month begins on the 23rd. Be ready for anything. Artists will love the creative energy this month, and we can all use it to improve our lives. NEW MOON —August 14 FULL MOON —August 29

Saturday, August 1

July’s Blue Moon is still shining full. It shortly goes Void of Course at 5:02pm for a brief mood dip, then shapeshifts into Pisces at 5:36pm. A series of contrasting dynamics gives this day an accordion-like feel, with expansion and contraction, optimism and deflation, idealism and realism. Let’s put them together to make our own music, a serenade to the beautiful Venus-Jupiter pair still hovering and lovering low in the evening sky. Soon Venus and Jupiter will sink below the horizon.

Sunday, August 2

Mental swings between fantasy and reality accompany Saturn’s long-awaited turn forward at the turn of the day,12:53am. While turning direction, a planet “stations,” or stays where it is. Saturn 44 Conscious Community - August 2015

starts up slow as molasses to make sure we are “getting it,” whatever our “it” is. Last call to clean up your act. Don’t ignore the signals or put “it” off too long. We are tempted to sidestep today. It is Sunday after all. At least feel things out and address any anxieties before making significant decisions or proceeding forward. Consult your higher mind. Be kind to yourself along the way. Judgments and blame are neither necessary nor useful.

Monday, August 3

After we catch a wave to get our day in gear, the Moon goes Void of Course at 3:35pm, giving us a little more time to settle into a groove. Jupiter and Saturn are squaring off, a fairly rare moment that signals a turning point in the larger socio-cultural context. We will want to pay attention, check the news. When the Moon enters fiery Aries at 6:24pm, the pace picks up. By the end of the week, we move into a series of energy shifts. Are you ready?

Tuesday, August 4

Jupiter and Venus are as close as they come at 4:47pm, a celebratory moment, and certainly an evening to enjoy the celestial treat they provide. Love and Wisdom unite, filling our hearts. Mercury is in range, creating a triple alchemy. Be ready and willing, as the global matrix vibrates with creative, transformational potentials. Watch for your moment to cross the threshold of renewal. Don’t be afraid to step forth into your authenticity.

Wednesday, August 5

Excitement can suggest a wakeful night or early morning wake up call. The beautiful celestial alignments are augmented by our creative engagement. Unexpected developments create drama, as we continue to upgrade our emotional I.Q., bringing more joy into our lives and relationships. In the morning, we face a situation or come to terms with something meaningful that resolves doubt. Speak from your heart. The key is to find inner happiness, appreciating and loving ourselves so fully that the cup of love runneth over. Action may be required, carefully, at the potentially tense moment of frustration around the 5pm hour. Happy hour, anyone? The evening promises pleasure and a loving spirit, making this a good date night. The Moon is Void of Course for just two hours, from 6:29 to 8:29pm, before entering Taurus, the sign that most enjoys the good things in life.

Thursday, August 6

Let the good times roll. Artists are clearly on such a roll, flowing with creative juices. The spirit of good will continues, as does the advice to speak from your heart. Your words will carry more weight and inform any issues that arise this afternoon. When the situation is laid out plainly, everyone concerned gets involved and deals with it. A results-oriented, pragmatic solution can be applied. A wish and a prayer won’t turn the trick today.

Friday, August 7

Mercury joins Jupiter at the edge of Leo-Virgo, a very busy cusp between signs this month. Think of the Sphinx, with the body of a Lion and the head of the Goddess, smiling at you with a very interesting question on her lips. What is coming into your mind? Mercury moves into hands-on Virgo, a sign of finesse, where it ups the efficiency quotient, demonstrates expert technique and gets down to brass tacks. Believe it—you will come up with improvements for the long run. Like yesterday, no quick fix here. Be sure to get on the good news bandwagon, looking for what’s going right rather than what’s going wrong. Let’s enjoy the best of Virgo, taking into account that it is a highly sensual sign, has an exquisite sense of smell and loves the textures of Nature. The Moon goes Void of Course across the midnight hour, from 11:46pm until...

Saturday, August 8

The Moon enters jumpy Gemini at 12:40am. Have you noticed how short the Void of Course Moons are, offering us very little lingering time? Things seem to be happening rather quickly, especially so in this couple of days with the Gemini Moon. Some news, song lyrics, or off-the-cuff comments may throw us a bit for a loop this afternoon. Don’t ignore any useful tidbits. You may be inspired to write a poem. Music can be a fine medium

to help choreograph the flow of the day. Mars changes sign. It’s showy entrance into Leo at 6:33pm makes an impact on the global stage and the circus of life (in the big top under the sky). Go out and have fun, but watch out for mischief-makers.

Sunday, August 9

There are serendipities galore along the way today. We can delight in how things are happening and appreciate life’s sense of humor. Take note of magic numbers and follow up on sudden inspirations. Keep a smile on your face, to invite others to smile back. The mirror of the Cosmos reflects back new insights and higher mind perceptions in quirky ways.

Monday, August 10

A quick Void of Course Moon starts the day in an interesting blip at 6:45am, changing into Cancer by 7:08am. Smooth sailing today with the Moon strong in its own water sign. Go with it and you’ll get just what you need. It’s a lovely day for sharing and caring. As a great way to start the week, spend extra time with your loved ones.

Tuesday, August 11

Jupiter makes its annual sign change—into Virgo this year—at 6:13am. We will soon lose view of the Big Planet as it sets with the Sun. Virgo is a more reserved sign than Leo. Jupiter’s year in Leo highlighted creative enthusiasm, opportunities to shine and learn more about ourselves. Now Jupiter’s wisdom is applied to smaller, quieter details, health and a sense of service. Even small contributions add up to make big differences. A sense of “job well done” can feel very rewarding as we sweep out the last of Saturn’s Scorpio detritus. Though it may not feel too comfortable, the Moon helps move things along when it hooks in to the Uranus-Pluto agenda for global change tonight.

Wednesday, August 12

The Moon is Void of Course from 12:44pm until it enters Leo at 3:52pm, fast approaching its fullness. The Perseids meteor shower is full on, though a bit lost in the moonlight. This evening, take care to communicate as clearly as possible, or wait until another time. Misunderstandings on the verbal level could lead to a spurt of anger. Rather demonstrate your feelings with a delicate touch, or by doing something of practical service. Put your own general chaos into order rather than cleaning up someone else’s mess. That person just might not appreciate moving their piles! Enjoy music or movies, or let your muse take over. Inspiration may lead to juicy creative activity. Wink, wink. are heightened. Let’s use them to finetune our experience. This is a great day for a massage or body work of some kind. Practitioners will be at their excellent best. Whatever you do, give it your best and results may exceed your expectations.

Monday, August 17

The Virgo Moon invites us back into the workweek, as if we never left. A project may claim our focus when the Moon goes VoC at 12:16pm, giving us several hours to do our best work with hints of magic. We look up from the task at hand to share results when Moon enters Libra at 3:23pm. We can use some feedback by then, and some new input.

Tuesday, August 18

Thursday, August 13

The Moon brightens and sparkles with constant inspirations. Follow your heart to explore new trails. Get excited about the new and different. This is a great day for meetings that involve revolutionary ideas, with everyone playing a meaningful role. Address those things that are in the way of progress. Apply new paradigm thinking and to take pragmatic steps forward. There is a plan beyond our limited thinking. Start by considering what would feel really good.

Friday, August 14 NEW MOON, 9:53am CDT, at 22 LEO

This New Moon is accompanied by love goddess Venus, retrograde and invisible in the light of the Sun. How extraordinary a sight, one we can see only in our imagination. As Venus exudes the quality of her influence, she invites us to do just that—imagine. Let’s bring to mind John Lennon’s famous song as we consider the quality of our lives and use the creative Leo energy to imagine a new vision of what is possible. Consult your heart and proceed with all the love you can bring to it. Remember to smile. In the tropics, a new crescent Moon is tilted into just such a smile. Imagine that! The Moon is Void of Course as of 11:36pm, defining the potential of the new lunar cycle.

Saturday, August 15

The Moon enters practical Virgo at 2:46am, when many of us are sleeping. Perhaps we’ll wake up with a to-do list written in our dreams. There is a lot on that list. It should be easy to drum up your enthusiasm for a beautiful day with Venus in the heart of the Sun. Yes, I know, we can’t see this lovely sight in the Sun’s light, but as we pay attention we will feel its quality shining bright. Create joy throughout the day and invite sweet dreams tonight.

Sunday, August 16

This is a day to engage the intelligence of Earth wisdom. Something in us tells us just what needs to be done, evoking the instinctive know-how to do it. Notice subtle distinctions, like a fine wine taster ca do. Let the delicate nerve endings in your fingers feel the textures, like a blind Braille reader. Our senses 46 Conscious Community - August 2015

The Libra Moon focuses on important conversations and negotiations, with increasing impact and intensity heading into the night. Approach such dialogues knowing where you stand yet with a listening ear. Choose your words with care, paying attention to how the other person is likely to hear you.

Wednesday, August 19

Some interesting news reports are likely to begin the day, offering plenty of fodder for discussion and debate. Consider how such news can improve your life, even if it seems against the odds. The day moves along with a feel-good flow. Consider doing something different for lunch—an impromptu lunch meeting, a spontaneous shopping trip, music in the park. Change things up and be in for a delightful moment. The Moon goes Void of Course at 9:56pm, ending the day on a harmonious note.

Thursday, August 20

The Moon enters smoky Scorpio at 4:24am, adding intensity to the day. Scorpio often goes to extremes, seeking and finding the best and the worst case scenarios. The best case is more likely today, but a mood shift later in the evening may be a bit testy. If something is getting under your skin, watch your temper. You don’t want to make things worse than they need to be. Channel the energy into self-transformation, esoteric research, sexuality and other such alchemical activities.

Friday, August 21

The transformational energy continues strong today. Get in The Zone and accomplish great things. You may finish a major project, carve out some effective strategies, or even rewrite your life plan. A significant mark can be made to secure a long-lasting result. Heightened emotional dynamics spice up the evening for an interesting, make-or-break date night. It’s also a good night for the arts. A future movie classic may open, for instance.

Saturday, August 22

Keep yesterday’s momentum going to sustain the intensity into the afternoon. The Moon goes Void of Course at 2:31pm. One stage has been completed. The momentum turns a corner, preparing for the next phase. The Moon heads into visionary

Sagittarius at 3:41pm. Look for the opportunities and the best means and tools for the optimum outcome. Take some time for some healthy activity to keep your physical vehicle tuned up (I mean your body, not your car!—but while you’re at it...).

VIRGO, the MAIDEN Sunday, August 23

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, sensual Virgos. The Sun enters this refined earth sign at 5:38am. Lounging around this Sunday morning in a lingering dream or meditation state is likely, drifting in a kind of trance. A spiritual uplift colors the day, even as activity stirs in mid-morning, stimulating invigorating exercise and sports activities. Now is the time to do your Virgo house cleaning—and find time to be out in nature, in honor of the Sun sign change.

Monday, August 24

Set your sights on goals for the week, then make this day count as good progress toward them. A full deck of fire sign planets is inspiring and energizing, stimulating the imagination. It may be hard to sit down today. Find a reason to go out and about if you can. At least get out at lunch to stretch those legs and fill your lungs with fresh air. The Moon is VoC at 5:04pm, more than hinting at another jog or a happy hour instead. Still, there are a lot of things to think about, details to focus on in order to get over the finish line today. You may want to stay put and work on those, but take care not to fuss yourself into stress. A break may free your mind to intuit the answers you’re looking for. Then you can return to the project—or not. The Moon enters Capricorn at 11:22pm.

Tuesday, August 25

With both Sun and Moon in earth signs, we can get a lot done today. It’s easy to maintain a smooth, efficient pace with everything falling into place. A fulfilling sense of job well done carries through this week, but is strongest today. Don’t be surprised by an unexpected change of plan overnight into tomorrow morning. It’s all in the Big Plan. The Black Moon crosses the pivotal Virgo-Libra cusp today, ushering in a spacious, non-judgmental field of play. This mysterious influence brings to mind Robert Frost’s poem, “Mending Walls,” in which he debates whether it is true that, “Good fences make good neighbors.” What do you think? Try not to think too hard. You’ll hurt some brain cells if you try to make decisions with limiting data or biases. Reread the poem and think about your neighbors.

Wednesday, August 26

A late morning kick in the air wakes up our attention, calling for a sensible, pragmatic response. An afternoon powwow of the Sun and Jupiter creates numerous opportune moments for a few days. Just the right thing comes along. All is well with the world. Listen for how many times your hear someone exclaim “perfect!” in delight. It’s nice to experience all levels in synch. On one level, everything is always perfect, but it’s usually hard to see that in this “imperfect” world. When we attune to the cellular wisdom of our bodies, we feel the rhythmic resonance of each moment. That’s perfection. 48 Conscious Community - August 2015

Thursday, August 27

A short VoC Moon at 2:20am invites a special message coming through, whether you’re awake or asleep. The Moon enters Aquarius at 3:03am for a social day, excellent for teamwork and community interaction. Tonight the Moon starts plugging in to the Venus and Mars duo, approaching each other in a classic and steamy mythic seduction. Mercury is already changing sign again, moving into Libra at 10:45am, adding to the communicative air signs. We consider various partnerships, relationships, or organizational liaisons. Some partings of the way may be appropriate. In any case, a heartfelt conversation may be called for; or, in the business realm, an honest exit interview.

Friday, August 28

Emotional dynamics are highlighted today, especially in the morning. Numerous questions of the heart are evaluated in relation to the bigger picture. If we can step back from any narrow ego defensiveness, our higher guidance can come through and free up our perspective. From that place, we can express our best loving and creative energy. Every voice counts. Social demonstrations express the will of the people. This is a good day to join together and call for further change in the status quo.

Saturday, August 29 FULL MOON, 1:35pm CDT, at 6 Virgo-PISCES

After a short Void of Course Moon at 2:03am, the Moon enters Pisces at 3:51am, soon becoming full. Neptune enhances the sensitive energy of this Full Moon, very open and spacious to subtle fields and empathic attunement. Our psychic antennae are turned on high reception, which may be a bit confused by the static of the day. Don’t be distracted from the high, even angelic, quality that reverberates through your system. With Jupiter accompanying the Virgo Sun, the Earth is soaking up a huge downpour of celestial light. The more we can each bring through, the better. The potential for a geomagnetic energy shift is opportune. Blessings abound. Believe that miracles are possible through grace and compassion. Angelic presences surround us. Extraordinary forces are in play. Supernatural wavelengths weave threads of connection through the global heart. Attune with terrestrial and extraterrestrial wisdom. Today’s priority is to feel all of this, with gratitude.

Sunday, August 30

After an extraordinary Full Moon day, we are more or less floating in a hodgepodge of realities. The Earth may call each of us in a specific way to ground our energy. Prayers are potent. Make this Sunday special, as if it is a holy day. Indeed, every day truly is a holy day.

Monday, August 31

A Void of Course Moon at 1:53am opens a short dreamspace vortex that can bring anything imagine with intent across the line into reality. It can feel as if we have a foot in two worlds. That is another perennial truth to consider. Communication with other realms is at premium volume. At 3:33am, the Moon enters Aries, quickly shifting into a crystalline tone of increasing clarity and a full palette of fresh ideas. That can be more confusing to some people than anything else. The veils are thin and we may not be

quite certain how to manage the integration of these new energies and ideas. Be kind to yourself and take the time it takes to get things together. Like maybe until tomorrow and the new month.
