PUBLISHER’S LETTER
EASY FLOW H
KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER
ave you ever heard yourself saying that you will never do that? Then a few years later, you are doing it and you even start liking it. This is what happened to me with Yin Yoga.
A few years back when I was looking for a daily yoga practice, I tried many different kinds of yoga to find the one that fit me the best. I remember some of the yoga classes were too physical, while others focused more on meditation, and I was looking for something in the middle. I eventually found Bikram yoga. This year I decided that I wanted to mix up my practice a little bit, so I tried Yin Yoga. The class was in the evening after my day of work. I got there, sat quietly, and then the teacher asked us to do some gentle poses. In Yin Yoga, you hold each pose for about four minutes. I could feel all the stress leaving my body and my muscles loosening up. My mind stopped talking to me, and I became still. The moves were very gentle and soft. When the class was over, I felt like a newborn again: No thoughts, worries, or stress! Now, I go to Yin Yoga from time to time and enjoy it every time I am there. For more about Yin Yoga, read Stefanie Arend’s article Yin Yoga: A Fast, Free and Easy Rx for Anxiety, and try Yin Yoga for yourself. Life is a constant change and flow; you live life or life lives you. We are changing all the time. Not one of us is the same person we were six months or two years ago. One of the places that I clearly can see change is in my closet. Every two years I need to change my wardrobe. It’s not because I gained or lost weight, but I energetically shift and I am a different person now. Did you know that we have new organs every month?! It is amazing to think about how our bodies are perfect and adaptable. We live in times when everything happens so fast, and we form our opinions even faster, without thinking deeply on what we are saying, or doing deeper research without knowing a person and knowing why she or he thinks that way. We place labels on other people and things so quickly even before we’ve put all the puzzle pieces together and seen the bigger picture. Saying ‘time is money’ has changed recently to ‘data is money’! To read more about labels, flip to Alan Cohen’s article Love Without Labels. Also, this August issue is full of retreats, classes and workshops that will help you change for the better and live a life with more love, acceptance and joy! Please support our advertisers, they are the legs of this magazine. When we share we grow together. Together we go further than ever going alone! The Best,

[COMMUNITY Q&A]
ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice
Q: I feel I’ve outgrown the relationship that I’ve been in for the last 12 years, and I’m not quite sure how to go about leaving it. I’m not angry about anything, nor has my boyfriend done anything “wrong” to justify it. It’s just not fulfilling anymore. How do I go about leaving it without the arguing and anger that usually accompanies breakups? I just don’t have the energy for that. — Moving On A: Dear Moving On, Cultural programming insinuates that relationships can’t end amicably, but that’s not true. The conscious path suggests that we come from our highest place—even when it’s painful and we’re afraid. We can walk such a path by engaging in “conscious uncoupling,” which is a peaceful, honoring way of disentangling lives. It’s not always easy, yet it’s well worth it if one has a mate that will walk a higher path through the breakup alongside them. The spiritually mature path is to be accountable while approaching one another with empathy and understanding. Breakups aren’t easy, even when both know that the relationship has run its course. You can begin the process by approaching him when you’re both in a quiet, easy space. Share several things you’ve loved about him so he knows that he’s seen and appreciated. Calmly and neutrally explain what has changed for you and why you are feeling unfulfilled in the relationship. Own your feelings instead 10
| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2019
of trying to avoid them. Try to use as many “I” phrases as possible, such as “I feel….” and few phrases beginning with “You don’t...or you won’t…” which shift blame onto him. Explain the changes you’ve been through, along with how it has shifted your interests, mindset, and how you wish to live. Let him know that your intention is to consciously uncouple by co-creating fair agreements which dissolve the relationship while moving everyone forward in positive ways. This doesn’t guarantee that both won’t occasionally feel angry, annoyed, or hurt, or that you won’t have any arguments. This merely means that you both agree to attempt to consciously override those more base feelings, by aiming your intentions towards higher perspectives that consider the other’s point of view through an empathetic lens followed by open-hearted actions. The ultimate intention is to uncouple in a way that brings as much goodwill, generosity, respect, mindfulness and compassion to interactions as possible—especially when children may be involved. Children deserve both of their parents whole, intact, and as balanced as possible while lives are being interrupted and rearranged and hearts are hurting. Breakups don’t mean that the relationship was a failure. It’s essential to preserve the positives, such as memories shared, children birthed, lessons learned together, as well as fun times that were had. These still exist and don’t have to
be permanently overshadowed by the grief and struggles that often come with endings which, in actuality, are transitions leading to new beginnings. During your process, try to remember: No one is responsible for our feelings but ourselves. The focus isn’t as much on what they did, as it is on how we react to them. When feelings amp up, push the pause button. If you’re hot, step back and take some time to cool down and sort out where the root of your feelings really come from. Naming them can help you feel more in control. Stay away from blaming your partner for not making adjustments to fulfill your needs in your new place of being. We’re responsible to be true to ourselves, and it’s not necessarily up to one to transform to meet another’s needs and changes. Seek the positive in the situation, for pain can eclipse the good through our hurts and disappointments. There are always silver linings to be found. Be grateful and cherish them when you find them. During the uncoupling process, our mission is to process ourselves through the pain, guilt and projections. In that way, we can be accountable as to how we also contributed to the demise of the relationship, because each partner contributes to it in their own way. If we’re to move forward and not make the same mistakes twice, we’re called to awareness of the path that we’ve traveled, owning our faults, thereby challenging ourselves with new ways of healing and being. This allows us to move forward, feeling empowered with forgiveness in our hearts for ourselves and others, so as not to get potentially stranded in the quicksand of negative feelings and perspectives. Alecia Rice integrates higher concepts with wisdom to bring forth balance, perspective and clarity. She’s a personal advisor, speaker and gatherer of women. For perspective on life issues, you’re invited to text questions and comments to 681-321-1109. Discussions continue at Ask Alecia on Facebook.

[ALL ABOUT TOWN]
ILLUMINATE CHICAGO
MIND-BODY-SPIRITARTS FESTIVAL Chicago Marriott, Naperville, IL June 30, 2019 by Theresa Puskar
When you are guided by spirit and listen intently, joyful growth is sure to follow. I recently attended Judy Bazis’ Illuminate Chicago Mind-Body-SpiritArts Festival in Naperville. After eight years of monthly visits to consciousness-raising festivals and workshops, I have to say that this one was one of the best! From the moment I checked in, I immediately noticed that the energy was different than most that I have attended. Once I interviewed Judy, I understood why. While this was her first festival in Chicago, she has been running major events for nine years.
exhibitors prior to allowing them to take part. She also facilitates a meditation and group intention with the exhibitors prior to opening the festival doors. While I too often find myself inundated with a sense of desperation and lack coming from exhibitors at such events, I experienced very little of it here. There was a welcoming ambiance of openness and generosity. In fact, what I found most remarkable was that a couple of the exhibitors offered me free trials of their product, no strings attached. When I am open and expecting guidance and support, it arrives in droves!
Diana Kushenbach Arden Bazis, Theresa Puskar & Judy Bazis
What makes this festival different? To start, Judy’s vision is pure and her mission is clear: “To dispel the idea that these events consist of the stereotype of a person with a crystal ball.” By including art in the offerings, she broadens the experience. Second, the entrance and exhibitor fees are low, making the opportunity more accessible to all. I discovered that she conducts interviews to vet 12
| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2019
As is always the case, I followed my heart and it directed me to the individuals that I was meant to see. The first exhibitor/speaker I was drawn to was Diana Kushenbach. She is the founder of the Academy of Spiritual Arts. She has been channeling ascended masters like Mother Mary, Jesus and Paramahansa Yogananda for over 12 years, and the message she shared was profound. When
she channeled for me, her message was loud and clear: I need to release old thought forms that are centered around my root chakra. We were constantly interrupted as she shared her knowledge with me and noted, “It’s like you are invisible. People don’t see you. It’s time for you to fully commit to being seen.” As soon as she shared this insight, my eyes welled up with tears of knowing. It’s time to forge ahead, get out of my own way, and create and promote with a joyful sense of ease and anticipation! Most recently, I have been focusing on a pattern that I have been repeating for quite some time and intend to break: getting in my own way when it comes to financial and business success. I note, especially as of late, how I have been graced with many near opportunities that somehow did not ultimately come to fruition. This pattern has both frustrated and discouraged me. As is always the case, this message was delivered at the perfect time, as I have just signed a contract with G&D Media to write two books. I am thrilled about the opportunity and determined to release the lack and fear consciousness and enthusiastically be seen. I set an intention to have faith and get out of my way so that the books can be birthed and thrive, unobstructed and without lack oozing from their seams! Getting “spritzed” with generosity of spirit was cleansing in more ways than anticipated!
The next exhibitor I met was Kelly Ferro of Aura Rose’ Clothing, in Kenosha, WI. She sells a clothing line, jewelry and Aura Rose’, a white sage cleansing spray. I was immediately drawn to Kelly’s energy. She was extremely welcoming and offered to do an energy cleanse with the spray. I loved the smell of the spray. After receiving the message from Diana, it was a perfect way to move energy. Her genuine free offer and laid back style have been etched in my mind as a model for the way I look forward to conducting my own sales and promotions in the future!
Barbara Mueller & Theresa Puskar
The final exhibitor that I had the pleasure of meeting was an award-winning photographer and artist, Barbara Mueller. I was immediately drawn to her display. She had a plethora of beautiful, radiant packets that consisted of a card with a magical photo she had taken, with a message she channeled when taking the photo, and charm jewelry that reflected the theme of the message/photo. They were magical and would be a wonderful gift that I’d love to receive, and, in fact, I did! I was digging through the cards, trying to find the perfect photo for this article. Immediately she responded, “Take one, take two. They are yours as my gift to you!” Again, another wonderful example of the generosity of spirit that festival participants embraced. Do what you love, unabashed, and success will ultimately come your way! During my interview with Judy, she shared her intention with the Illuminate festivals as being:
• Priced low enough to be accessible to all and are not based on scarcity; • Based on a “service” mindset, to help heal and unite communities; • Unique and creative in their offerings. Every festival should look different from the last; • Focused on local practitioners. building healing within the local neighborhood; • Intended to help others heal, through connection with healing art and other modalities. Judy explained, “My work is my play. When I win the lottery, I’ll do the same thing…I’ll just have a bigger advertising budget!” Her 14-year old daughter, Arden, travels with her, and each event is a journey of delight. As she meandered through the festival, her tiny dog in hand, her love and enthusiasm for what she does was obvious. I felt it among the exhibitors as well. It was such a potent and palpable example. So much so, that I set a similar intention with my books, and I have an offering to you, as my dear readers. I will be conducting free weekly webinars that are based on the contents of my books (to be published in the spring of 2020):
8 WAYS TO DE-CLUTTER YOUR BRAIN After millions of years of inhabiting the earth, the human brain has developed into a highly functional and complex apparatus. That being said, we have come to the point where we actually believe we ARE our minds. What if you realized that you are neither responsible for, nor liable for your thoughts? What if you knew that they are not yours, but are, in fact, an expression of the universal “thoughtmosphere”? The time has come in our evolution to shift the paradigm, and awaken to the
realization that your mind has served you well, but that you are so much more. This revolutionary new book shines a light on the ways in which you deplete your energy, and limit yourself as you attempt to navigate your way through your self-created maze of mind chatter. The answer lies in rising above that maze, so that you can observe its tricks and traps in a non-reactive way. In this groundbreaking book, Theresa will assist you in unravelling the unconscious internal battle of duality that rages within you. As you practice these techniques, you will start to see everything from the place of truth and ultimately learn that it is not about improving your life, it’s about changing your paradigm. In doing so, you can begin to heal both your personal and professional life, and affect the world at large! I encourage you to join me, as I will be introducing a new way of raising your consciousness that is extraordinary. You do not have to buy anything and are free to join me for each webinar, or drop in when you desire. They will be conducted every Wednesday evening, starting on Aug. 14, 2019, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. via my Theresa Puskar YouTube channel. If you miss any sessions, you can subscribe and view the recordings at a later time. Theresa Puskar is an author, performer, speaker, minister and motivational audiobook producer. She is the creator of the “Terri” children’s book series, as well as being an actress and director. A powerful inspirational speaker and transition leader, Theresa edu-tains her audiences, by touching hearts and minds in a way that is engaging, joyful and life-affirming. Her most recent endeavors are her solo show Causeless Joy, her new company, Dragon Soup Children’s Theatre Training and Productions, as well as her upcoming books, 8 Ways to De-Clutter Your Brain, and The Good Morning Mind: Seven Highly Effective Habits for the Workplace. [FROM THE HEART]
LOVE WITHOUT LABELS by Alan Cohen
14
When one of my coaching clients complained to her doctor that she was depressed, he diagnosed her as having a personality disorder and referred her to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist told her she did not have a personality disorder at all; She talked through her feelings and walked out of the session feeling liberated from the burden of a label.
be able to identify and categorize diseases, it becomes attractive for practitioners to jump to a trendy diagnosis. While lots of people suffer from ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, or other personality disorders, lots of other people suffer under misapplied labels that box them into stifling identities. Naming things gives us power over them. It also gives them power over us.
The medical world is highly invested in labels. While it is certainly practical to

him. “My girlfriend,” he replied. As we discussed his relationship, it turned out that he simply wanted to have sex more than his girlfriend did. So, she called him a “sex addict.” It’s easy to project our fear, pain and judgments onto others. If they accept our projection, we both suffer. When a friend of mine had a fight with his roommate, the roommate blurted out, “You are psychotic. I took a psychology course in college, so I know
what I am talking about.” A few days later my friend did a favor for his roommate. “I was wrong about you being psychotic,” she said. “You just have a personality disorder.” When the roommate was angry at my friend, her weapon was to lay a harsh diagnosis on him. When she liked him again, she downgraded the diagnosis. Funny creatures, we humans. I heard a lecture by a famous gynecologist. He humorously confessed, “A woman who had just had a baby would ask me, ‘How long until I can have sex with my husband again?’ If I liked the woman, I would tell her, ‘A few days.’ If I didn’t like her, I would tell her, ‘A few weeks.’” Funny creatures, we humans. Medical doctors and psychotherapists must issue a diagnosis if they want to get paid by insurance companies. They have to assign each patient a disease, often associated with a number, to maintain their livelihood. Imagine what would happen to a medical doctor if he wrote in his insurance report: “Jane is a beautiful child of God who has just forgotten who she is. She has momentarily gotten caught up in the illusion of limitation. I suggested she meditate regularly and love herself more, and I expect she’ll awaken to her true self.” No check for that doctor. A friend of mine is a talented chef who owns a well-known natural foods restaurant. Some of his patrons belong to a popular health maintenance organization. Doctors who work for that HMO are required to prescribe medication for every patient they see. While I’m sure many of the prescriptions are helpful, other patients end up taking drugs they don’t need. Some of those drugs, such as anti-depressants, are extremely addictive. Clients get hooked on them and have a hard time kicking them. On the brighter side, this HMO now allows their physicians to write prescriptions for patients to upgrade their
diet in lieu of taking prescription drugs. The HMO pays the chef to teach their patients cooking classes with natural foods. Hallelujah, we are starting to wake up!
Even while your body “moves about the physical dimension, your spirit soars far beyond it. You can never, ever be defined by a label or diagnosis.
”
Chinese medicine is lighter on labeling diseases. The practice is more about recognizing where life force is blocked, and then opening up the blockage to allow energy to flow again. This highlights a fundamental difference between form and energy. Form is based on things, and energy is based on flow. When you “thing” a disease, you give it a life of its own and bestow it with power. You also become a “thing.” But you are not a thing. You are not even a body. You are a spiritual being expressing in the world of form. Who you are is greater than any disease anyone could name. Never let a disease define you. The key to healing is to recognize that you are a perfect, free, unlimited spirit.
self. Remember who you are, and that you have power over all disease. The real you could never have a personality disorder because you are not a personality. The word “personality” comes from the Greek “persona,” meaning, “mask.” Your mask can appear ugly, ripped or marred, but you cannot be so damaged. When you remove the mask, you have no flaws. Love knows no labels. Love just loves. Alan Cohen is the bestselling author of A Course in Miracles Made Easy. In the world, we must use labels. But there is a world beyond labels. The Bible tells us to be in the world but not of it. When Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the King of the Jews?” he answered, “My kingdom is not of this world.” Likewise, your kingdom is not of this world. Even while your body moves about the physical dimension, your spirit soars far beyond it. You can never, ever be defined by a label or diagnosis. REWRITE THE PAST IN YOUR MIND by C. Scot Giles, D.Min, DNGH Everyone has memories that are sad or troublesome. All of us get to adulthood with our share of emotional scars. They may have been embarrassing moments, betrayals by someone we trusted, or some other heartbreak or reversal. The brain has evolved to keep us safe; it prioritizes information and recollections that it believes will make us cautious in the future. The reason is simple; in the state of nature, people who were cautious tended to survive. People who were not cautious tended to become food for other creatures. Therefore, because of how the human neurophysi16

ology evolved, our minds give disproportionate weight to fears, failures and other unfortunate events by default. However, you can take control of this process using the power of your mind. There is something you can do to pull the hurt out of darker recollections from your past. Here I need to give credit where credit is due. This technique was developed by the late Ruth Carter Stapleton, a spiritual healer who was the sister of former President Jimmy Carter. She called her technique “Inner Healing,” and you can find it described in her books.
The concept is simple. In a state of mental relaxation, review in your imagination the painful past incident. Then change it. Imagine that some powerful and benevolent force or person intervenes and changed the outcome. Make that as real and as vivid as you can. You will not mistake fantasy for reality. You will always be able to distinguish between your recollection of what actually happened from the “adjusted” image you have created. But you will find that the hurtful aspect of a painful recollection decreases every time you recall the adjusted image.
Ms. Stapleton, being a Christian evangelist, always used the image of Jesus as her intervening figure, and she used nothing more psychologically powerful than guided meditation. However, others have found that any benevolent force or person can be used, even a highly abstract one such as “spirit.” If you have been trained in self-hypnotism, you will find that greatly improves the effectiveness of this self-help method. The reason why this method works is rooted in the nature of human memory. Your memory is not like a video recording. Instead, the outline of what is recalled is encoded into your internal information processing system. Then when the memory is needed, your mind fills out the encoded outline with such relevant information as it has on hand. Memory is constructive. What plays in your head when you recall a memory isn’t an exact recollection of what happened, but a construction between the remembered outline and other thoughts that your subconscious mind thinks would fill out the picture nicely. This is one of the problems with hypnotically refreshed memory sometimes used in court cases. For example, a witness to a hit-and-run accident can be hypnotized to recall the license plate of the offending driver’s vehicle. However, that doesn’t actually mean the recalled license plate is correct. If the witness had always believed that his or her second cousin was capable of doing a hit-and-run, the witness’s subconscious mind may easily recall the cousin’s license plate number and insert it into the memory. In the 1980s and ’90s, there was a tremendous problem in the mental health community when a lot of therapists became convinced their clients had suffered various forms of sadistic abuse but could not recall it. Using hypnotism and other techniques the therapists “refreshed” the client’s recollection using leading questions which the subconscious minds of those clients immediately inserted into the client’s memory. The result has come to be called the False Memory Syndrome and it hurt a lot of people.
However, when done deliberately with benign intent, changing the emotions you have around painful memories under your own control can be enormously helpful. Without creating a false memory, you can rewrite your past after a fashion and spare yourself the embarrassment, shame, or dark feelings related to something that happened. Sometimes I am asked about the ethics of this technique when I suggest a client use it. Some people will feel genuine regret about a mistake in their past and feel they need to hold themselves accountable for what they did. I understand this position completely. One of the ways we can improve ourselves is to hold ourselves accountable for what we did or did not do. This is an important way to become the best version of yourself. That said, once one has learned from a past mistake, made whatever amends are possible and resolved not to repeat
the mistake, what possible purpose could there be to inflicting unnecessary pain on oneself? Provided one is sincere in one’s resolve to learn from and not repeat a mistake, making the recollection less painful can be an important form of self-care. Finally, we must note that some dark memories were not caused by anything we did or did not do. People are victimized by others all the time and feelings of victimization can pull happiness out of life. Using this technique to soothe some of the pain of a painful memory can enable one to move beyond the experience of victimization and adopt the identity of a survivor instead. That is always worth doing. The Rev. Dr. C. Scot Giles is a BoardCertified Diplomate and a Certified HypnoCoach® with the National Guild of Hypnotists. YIN YOGA A Fast, Free and Easy Rx for Anxiety by Stefanie Arend
In our busy world, anxiety affects more people than ever. We power through late nights at work, are constantly bombarded by messages even after leaving the office, and are haunted by performance pressure in the classroom and workplace. The internet makes it easier than ever to compare ourselves to others and harder than ever to escape daily stress. Living in this hyperactive environment, it is no wonder that so many of us experience persistent feelings of worry and unease. There are many kinds of anxieties, and most are associated with the loss of confidence—particularly basic trust, which is developed in childhood. Anxiety is often noticeable at the physical level. For example, anxiety may physically manifest through increased blood pressure, tense muscles, and especially shallow breathing. It is important to face your fear to find out its cause. Anyone confronted by anxieties should work through them and not run away from them. A state of anxiety often resolves itself 18

quickly if you stand up to it, like a dark cloud passing. What is important is to strengthen the basic trust again and constantly ground yourself—for example, by walking in the countryside, frequently sitting on the ground, walking barefoot, or working in the garden. A lovely expression captures this idea well: “Anxiety knocked on the door, trust opened it, and nobody was there.” Yin Yoga practice teaches us a wonderful way to let go—physically, emotionally and mentally. Today, I want to share a simple but powerful way to leave our worries behind in this busy, modern world. See the following short sequence of easy poses to help alleviate anxieties and bring serenity into your life. I’d also like to share one of my favorite meditations, which I do every night before I go to bed: Yin Chakra Meditation, which cleanses the energies we collect throughout the day. Join me for the meditation here: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=MFkACymvEdI&t=94s
ALTERNATE NOSTRIL BREATHING Alternate Nostril Breathing has a balancing effect, as you harmonize both of the main energy channels, Ida (left) and Pingala (right), which correspond to Yin and Yang. Do Alternate Nostril Breathing until you feel balanced. Sit on the mat in Easy Pose and straighten your spine. Bend the index finder and middle finger of the right hand to the palm (the left-handed may wish to do the left) and stretch the ring finger and small finger out loosely. You can also place the index finger and middle finger on the forehead chakra. Now close the left nostril with the ring finger and the right nostril with the thumb. Hold your nose very gently without applying any pressure. Keep your head straight and your right elbow to the side of your body. Start by inhaling on the left side, holding the right nostril closed while doing this. After inhaling, close the left side again, open the right, and take a long breath out. Then inhale again on the right and exhale again on the left. That is one complete breathing cycle. You can also hold your breath between inhaling and exhaling. Ideally, the exhale should be longer than the inhale. Then let your hand sink down to your leg again and feel the effect.
CAT PULLING ITS TAIL
For the classic Child’s Pose, sit on your heels and let your upper body sink forward. Your arms are stretched out relaxed next to your legs, and your forehead touches the floor. If you wish, you can put a blanket underneath you. Alternatively, you can place one fist on top of the other and place your forehead on them. Keep your legs closed or open, whichever feels more comfortable. Remain in the position as long as it feels good and then roll out of it again slowly. Stefanie Arend is a renowned Yin Yoga instructor, holistic health coach, nutritionist and energy worker. As the first German author to focus exclusively on Yin Yoga, she is the author of six books, including the classic bestseller, Yin Yoga: The Gentle Way to the Inner Center (2011) and Surya Namaskar: The Sun Salutation (2014), both of which were named Best Yoga Book of the Year in German-speaking countries. Be Healthy with Yin Yoga is her first English language book. Lie on your left side and position your head comfortably on your left arm. Bend your right knee and angle your leg at 90 degrees in front of the body. Now also bend your left knee and grip your left ankle with the right hand behind your back, so that you come into a gentle rotation. Alternatively, you can also grip your pants or use a yoga belt. Either remain balanced lying on the side, or shift your weight back a little more. Direct your breath into your stomach to strengthen the detoxifying effect of this exercise on your stomach organs.
This is an excerpt from Be Healthy with Yin Yoga: The Gentle Way to Free Your Body of Everyday Ailments and Emotional Stresses by Stefanie Arend and published by She Writes Press. Reprinted with permission.
Hold the position for three to five minutes, then release the hand from your foot, turn back to the center and change sides.
CHILD’S POSE (BALASANA) Child’s Pose is good if you need time to recover or if you wish to neutralize between exercises. The position relaxes the back, shoulders and neck. It stretches the bridges of the foot and the ankles, relaxes the spine and evenly massages the stomach organs.

THE BENEFITS OF NATURAL SKINCARE PRODUCTS by Nicole Cavalea
These days there is much attention being paid to the foods we eat. Organic and natural foods are becoming more and more popular as society is becoming more aware of the idea of “clean eating.” The market is saturated with products containing organic or natural labels. Most people are aware of the health dangers of processed foods but what about the products we apply to our skin? Are consumers paying close enough attention to what they are putting into their bodies via their skin? Do our skincare products have the potential to affect health in the same way as our diet? There are many benefits of switching to a natural skincare routine. The human body is comprised of complex organ systems that work together to keep us balanced and functioning properly. The skin is the largest organ. It is very porous and has the capacity to absorb up to 60% of what it comes into contact with. The matter that is absorbed will enter the bloodstream and eventually make its way through the body systems to be processed by the kidneys, lungs and liver. For years, it was common for cosmetics to contain ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate, petroleum/ paraffin oil, and even formaldehyde. However, in recent years scientific studies have shown that these ingredients can be very harmful to health; causing skin irritation, respiratory issues, cancer and many other serious health problems. How does one know if the products they are using are safe? A good rule of thumb is to read ingredient lists thoroughly and eliminate products that contain the ingredients listed above, along with synthetic preservatives and/or fragrance. On a positive note, there are many natural skincare companies with products on the market. Essential oils are a great way natural skincare companies can add a natural scent. Essential oils are highly concentrated oils made from flowers or plants through distillation or other forms of extraction. The oils are so concentrated that it is recommended they not be used directly on skin but only through the use of a carrier oil. Direct contact with the skin can cause irritation. Each oil has its own unique character20

istic and can be used in different ways specific to the goals of the product. For example, lavender oil has many different characteristics. It is very healing to the skin and is often used in healing balms and salves. Lavender oil also has a relaxing aromatic response and can calm the central nervous system; therefore, it is used in many nighttime creams. Frankincense is a popular oil that can also be used many ways. It is thought to have powerful healing properties that when used topically can attract immune fighting cells to the surface of the skin. It is used often in healing balms and even to reduce the appearance of scars. These are only a few examples of the power of natural oils. The list can go on and on. There are many benefits to switching to a natural skincare regimen. Most people would even say they notice an obvious difference in the appearance and receptiveness to their skin. The skin often appears “happier,” meaning, less dry, more supple and healthier in appearance. The most important result is the peace of mind one receives in knowing they are making a great choice for their body and overall health. THE LIFESAVING BENEFITS OF FRUIT Jackfruit Salad and Minted Fruit Kebabs by Betsy Bruns
Chances are you have been told a time or two to eat your vegetables. Vegetables are a must to enjoy optimal health, yet they go down easier for some than others. Do you know there are people walking around this planet, and you may be one of them, whose lips rarely meet with a piece of broccoli or a spear of asparagus? Even so, most know that to be healthy, vegetables need a place on our plates, yet how often have you been told to eat your fruit? Adding to the confusion, some doctors tell patients to limit fruit consumption and the popular low-carb diets of the moment are doing the same. The low-carb craze has got some people feeling a little leery of fruit. Others have 26

developed a fruit-phobia. Should they be concerned about the abundance of carbs and natural sugar? Is fruit a bad thing, or is there just some fake fruit news out there? According to The Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine, eating fruit every day may reduce the risk of heart disease by 40 percent and cut the risk of overall death by 32 percent. That’s pretty good news. In 2012, a study involving 500 researchers in 50 countries on the leading causes of death and disease was published. It reported that here in the U.S. our biggest killer was our diet and the number one risk was not eating enough fruit. Around the world, low fruit intake
was estimated to be responsible for nearly five million deaths a year. Now, that’s scary. Truth is, it’s an easy fix. In this country, fruit is accessible and can be quite affordable. In fact, it could save money. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, “If Americans ate just one more serving of fruits or vegetables per day, it would save more than 30,000 lives and $5 billion in medical costs each year.” While you can get your daily fruit by peeling and eating an orange, you can also incorporate fruit-based fare that will refresh your taste buds and satisfy your appetite. These recipes just might spice up your fruit tooth.
JACKFRUIT SALAD Makes 6 ½ cup servings Young jackfruit is the star ingredient in this recipe. Jackfruit has gained popularity recently with the rise in plantbased eating. Its fibrous texture resembles meat in vegan dishes. Rich in vitamin C, potassium and phytochemicals, it helps to protect against cancers and other chronic diseases. If you are not able to find young canned jackfruit at your local grocer, you can find it online or in Asian markets.
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar ½ teaspoon black salt or to taste ¼ teaspoon black pepper, or to taste ½ teaspoon mustard powder 1 teaspoon kelp granules Directions Pour jackfruit into a colander, rinse, then put into a medium-sized pot and cover with water. Cook for approximately 30 minutes or until it breaks apart easily into chunks. Drain and transfer to a bowl. Add the cannellini beans. Using a fork, mash and break apart jackfruit and beans into tuna-like chunks. Mix in chopped veggies and relish. In a separate small bowl, whisk the remaining ingredients together, then add to the jackfruit mixture and stir well. Check seasonings and adjust to your liking. Chill for three hours or more. Serve in a sandwich, wrap or on a bed of greens.
Seasonings that make this recipe stand out are kelp granules and black salt. Kelp is a sea vegetable and lends a fishy taste. Black salt, also known as kala namak, has a sulfur-like flavor which delivers an eggy taste. It’s optional but highly recommended. You can find it in Asian markets or online. Ingredients 1 20 ounce can of young jackfruit in brine ½ cup cannellini beans ½ medium onion diced 2 carrots, shredded or finely chopped Sweet pickle relish to taste 2 tablespoons vegan mayo (low-fat is best)
MINTED FRUIT KEBABS Makes 4 Servings
Ingredients 8 red or green grapes 4 large strawberries 4 1-inch-square cantaloupe chunks 4 1-inch-square honeydew chunks 4 ½-inch-thick slices peeled kiwi 4 1-inch-square watermelon chunks ¼ cup orange juice 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh mint leaves
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 4 10-inch bamboo skewers Directions Thread 1 grape, 1 strawberry, 1 cantaloupe chunk, 1 honeydew chunk, 1 slice kiwi, 1 watermelon chunk and 1 more grape onto a skewer. Repeat with the remaining fruit and skewers. Place the finished skewers in a shallow container. In a small bowl, whisk together the orange juice, lime juice, mint and vanilla. Pour the marinade over the fruit kebabs, cover, and chill for at least 30 minutes (or up to 3 hours) in the refrigerator before serving. COSMIC DAILY WEATHER August 2019 by Bernadette Evans
Overview
Happy August everyone! The energies this month look calmer and lighter. There’s more movement, some much-needed fun and even the chance for romance. It also brings with it some focus if you’re trying to get a project off the ground. It takes Mercury some time before he picks up speed and starts moving forward, but he’s getting there slowly but surely. On Aug. 11, Jupiter, the planet of expansion, will start moving direct. Is there a goal you’re aiming for? Is there something you’d like to study that would help you grow? The same day that Jupiter turns direct, Uranus Retrogrades. Maybe with Uranus retrograde, you’re rolling thoughts around to see how they feel before you tell anyone about them. How do you want to change the world? The Full Moon is on Aug. 15 in the sign of Aquarius. You could be looking for some balance in your relationships and possibly your financial resources. There is a need for freedom and yet the desire to connect with others. Maybe you’re the trailblazer of a new and exciting path. How do you want to express yourself and stand out from the crowd when you do? Then we have our New Moon on Aug. 30 in the sign of Virgo. You’re ready to put in the work; no detail is too small for you. You have the ideas, the drive and the support from others financially and emotionally. This helps you feel you’re on the right track and have solid footing when you move forward with your plans. Another good use of the Virgo New Moon is to establish some healthy habits. That could be making healthier food choices and starting a new workout routine. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete its orbit through the 12 signs, staying approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is Void of Course (VoC), it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets before it leaves the sign it’s in. At these times, it can be difficult to get focused and accomplish a task. You may want to relax, meditate or do something where your focus is turned inward. Don’t try and get a new project off the ground when the Moon is void. If you want to find out more about the Void of Course Moon, check out Moontracks.com. The times below are listed in Central Daylight Time (CDT).

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2019
Thursday, August 1 Your determination, focus and strong will can move mountains when the Moon is in Leo. At times you may feel you are on this journey alone, but your fearless courage propels you forward and gets you noticed. You may find you’ve attracted some admirers along the way. Moon VoC in Leo at 3:48 p.m.
Friday, August 2 When Venus squares Uranus, you could feel you need some excitement in your relationships. The excitement could come in the way of picking a fight just because you’re bored. You could choose something else that’s stimulating without provoking anyone. When Venus squares Uranus your world is shaken up and expands as you entertain all the different possibilities. Watch your spending today. Moon enters the sign of Virgo at 8:20 a.m.
Saturday, August 3 There are two schools of thought today. With the first one, you could be feeling quite generous, open and feel you can accomplish quite a bit with the MoonJupiter square. With the second one, you’re keeping to yourself, not showing a lot of emotion and focusing on the tried and true with the Moon-Saturn trine. Of course, you could put both of these ener-
gies to work and accomplish a lot and feel great about it! Moon VoC at 11:27 p.m.
Sunday, August 4 When the Moon is in Libra, you could go out and socialize with family or friends. By making the time to enjoy the good things in life, whether it’s with loved ones or enjoying a walk in nature, you can bring balance into your life. Moon enters the sign of Libra at 8:30 a.m.
Monday, August 5 There are a lot of ideas stirring the atmosphere when the Moon is in Libra and a desire to share them. There’s an opportunity to collaborate with others when the Moon sextiles Jupiter. Be open to bouncing ideas off each other and expanding on them. It could be a lot of fun!
Tuesday, August 6 With the Moon in Scorpio, you’re feeling everything today. Your passion shines through, whether it’s for a person, a hobby or your work. When you’re invested, you’re in all the way; you dig deep to find the answers to your questions and are tenacious. Tap into your inner GPS for added guidance. Moon VoC at 2:36 a.m. until 10:31 a.m. when it enters the sign of Scorpio.
Wednesday, August 7 The Moon-Sun square may help you get a lot accomplished. There is a strong desire to focus and cross things off your list. You could also find you’re feeling more irritable with others or situations. Step away for a few minutes; assess how you’re feeling and the best way to handle it.
Thursday, August 8 The Moon-Mercury trine helps you tune into the emotional currents of the day. You’re ready to support loved ones by listening with an open heart. You intuitively know just what to say to make others feel better. The Venus-Jupiter trine could find you getting out for the evening with friends. Enjoying the finer things in life may be on the menu for tonight. Moon VoC at 9:58 a.m. until 3:35 p.m. when it enters the sign of Sagittarius.
Friday, August 9 Generosity towards others with your time, finances and spirit, are evident with the Moon-Jupiter conjunction. You also like your freedom and don’t want to be taken
advantage of; so, when you feel you’ve given enough of your time and energy to others, you then may feel like bolting. There’s also the potential of being blunt and saying something that someone else won’t appreciate. I know you’re just being you—and that’s great—but do try and watch what you say.
Saturday, August 10 Moon-Mars provides the fuel for your gas tank today. Your desire and ambition help you assert yourself and get the ball rolling. Caution: be careful of taking something personally and losing your temper. Also, pay attention when you’re driving today to avoid any accidents. Moon VoC at 2:50 p.m. until 11:50 p.m. when it enters the sign of Capricorn.
Sunday, August 11 Mercury moves into the sign of Leo at 2:46 p.m. When the planet of communication moves into the sign of the King or the Entertainer, you may find that you express yourself more dramatically. You could be quite good at selling something; yourself or a product. Leo is a fixed sign; once you’ve formed an opinion you may find yourself digging in your heels and not open to changing your mind. You may feel like you’re slogging away, trying to make ends meet and that responsibilities are weighing you down when the Moon’s in Capricorn. Be gentle with yourself and slowly work on one thing at a time until the pile looks lighter and easier to handle. Jupiter stations Direct at 8:37 a.m., while Uranus stations Retrograde at 9:27 p.m.
Monday, August 12 The Moon-Pluto conjunction may have you questioning what the meaning is behind what someone is saying. It would be so much easier if others were more transparent, but alas, you may have to do some investigating and read between the lines. Moon VoC at 5:11 p.m.
Tuesday, August 13 Was it something I said? The MoonMercury opposition could find you saying something that offends someone. You’re feeling removed from the situation, which is why you may have said what you did. Try and put yourself in someone else’s shoes and see their point of view. Moon moves into the sign of Aquarius at 10:35 a.m.
Wednesday, August 14 The Sun-Venus conjunction could play out
as a beautiful, romantic, fun day, but the Sun and Venus are quincunx Pluto. Love and creativity could be transformative with your connections growing deeper and your creativity taking on even more depth. The other side of this is that there may be some possessiveness or power struggles in your relationship; the creative channel is not coming together exactly as you wanted. It’s as if you make one adjustment, it’s good for a time, then you have to readjust again. It’s kind of frustrating but that’s the dance today.
Thursday, August 15 The Full Moon is in Aquarius at 7:29 a.m. You could be feeling like you just need some space. Someone is being pushy and overbearing and you feel you have to defend yourself. Everyone is entitled to their own space and their own opinion, and you don’t need to defend or justify your feelings. Moon VoC at 8:02 p.m. until 10:49 p.m. when it enters the sign of Pisces.
Friday, August 16 There is still edginess to the day when Mercury squares Uranus; the Moon sextiles Uranus and the Moon quincunx Mercury. Thoughts, ideas, impulses and emotions are coming in quickly, and you may react without thinking about the consequences. Try and slow down and think of solutions instead of problems. Write down any brilliant ideas and look them over in a few days to see if they still seem amazing.
Saturday, August 17 The Moon-Neptune conjunction brings with it a softness to the day. Some would call that softness, fog or illusion, and they could be right. There may be a coming together of energies to create something beautiful and magical, or it could all be imaginary because you have rose-colored glasses on. Enjoy the day for what it is and just be aware that someone or something is not all that it seems. Enjoy this energy and celebrate, either with a partner or some good friends. Go play; everyone needs some fun and joy in life! Moon VoC at 5:35 p.m.
Sunday, August 18 Mars enters the sign of Virgo at 12:18 a.m. When Mars is in Virgo every project you complete gives you a feeling of accomplishment which makes you happy. You may feel the urge to make a to-do list and cross things off as you finish them. With the Moon-Mars quincunx, you may be CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

making constant adjustments as you go along. Try and let go of the need for everything to be perfect. There’s a happy balance between rushing to finish your work and going over it a million times. Moon enters the sign of Aries at 11:33 a.m.
habits. Mercury trine Jupiter bestows an optimistic vibe to the day. You’re positive and open to new ideas and beliefs which translate into momentum or just feeling good. Nothing wrong with that!
Monday, August 19
You may find communication is emotionally charged. Misunderstandings and confusion abound when the Moon squares Mercury, followed by the Moon-Neptune sextile. This is a great time to say what’s on your mind while allowing the other person to do the same. You never know what you might learn and it could strengthen your connection. Moon VoC at 4:33 p.m.
Duty and responsibility may have you feeling down with the Moon-Saturn square. Being conscientious about doing a good job is admirable but balance that with taking care of your needs and what would make you happy.
Tuesday, August 20 When the Moon squares Pluto, you may find yourself involved in a power struggle. Someone may be trying to manipulate you, or you are the one doing the manipulating. There could be a war of words leaving someone feeling battered and bruised. You could use the energy of the day to do your own analysis and examine what this is really about. Moon VoC at 11:06 p.m. until 11:37 p.m. when it enters the sign of Taurus.
Wednesday, August 21 Venus moves into the sign of Virgo at 4:06 a.m. When Venus is in Virgo, you can be quite discriminating about who you’re in relationships with. You value hard work and cleanliness as well as having healthy

Thursday, August 22
Friday, August 23 Happy Birthday, dear Virgos! Emotions are up and down, starting with the last quarter Moon, the Moon-Sun square. You could feel like something is coming to a crisis point, there’s some tension and you’re not sure how to relieve the pressure. It’s a sense of urgency. In the afternoon, when the Moon squares Venus, you’re more likely to want to mingle with friends and generally have a good time. The Sun enters the sign of Virgo at 5:02 a.m. Moon moves into the sign of Gemini at 9:34 a.m.
Saturday, August 24 Venus and Mars come together in a conjunction. You could be floating two feet off of the ground, you’re so happy, whether in a relationship or not. If you are in a relationship you’re feeling passionate, attractive and willing to meet your partner half-way. If single, you may be feeling sexy and amorous and…looking for love. It’s definitely a night to go out and have a great time!
Sunday, August 25 What do you love to do? The Moon is VoC in Gemini most of the day. You might enjoy doing some writing, or reading that good book that’s been sitting on your shelf for a while. Go out for coffee and engage in a conversation, just don’t get involved in any disagreements. Moon VoC at 1:58 a.m. until 4:05 p.m. when it enters the sign of Cancer.
Monday, August 26 You may be scanning the horizon looking for your next great adventure when Venus trines Uranus. Freedom in your relationships is a must, as is spontaneity and socializing with an eclectic mix of people. That being said, you hold steady until you know the time is right to make a move.
Tuesday, August 27 What are you doing to nurture yourself? The Moon is VoC for most of the day in Cancer. Spend time working on something that brings you joy, something you’re proud of. Surrounding yourself with family and friends might also be just what you need. Moon VoC at 3:55 a.m. until 6:53 p.m. when it enters the sign of Leo.
Wednesday, August 28 Time to go for the gold when Mars trines Uranus. You think outside the box and have the drive and desire to go after your dreams. Your creative juices, your perseverance and your courage to follow your heart give the Universe the green light, saying, “Bring it on!” Moon VoC at 7:07 p.m.
Thursday, August 29 Mercury enters the sign of Virgo at 2:48 a.m. Mercury is at home in the sign of Virgo and is extremely good at putting ideas to work; in fact, the more details he can get his hands on, the better. You can communicate your ideas at work easily; you feel you know your stuff. Be careful of giving opinions that may sound like criticisms to your coworkers. The Moon is VoC for most of the day in Leo; you may feel the desire to come out from the shadows to be noticed and appreciated. Moon moves into the sign of Virgo at 6:57 p.m.
Friday, August 30 A business partnership is a definite possibility with the New Moon in Virgo. There is a desire to create something magical to share with the world. This venture could prove lucrative, because you have a clear vision and have put in the work. New Moon in Virgo at 5:37 a.m.
Saturday, August 31 You may have a lot of irons in the fire at the moment; with the VoC Moon in Virgo, it may feel like nothing is happening. Take a breather and just relax, you’ve set the wheels in motion. Now it’s time to see what materializes after all your hard work. Moon VoC at 3:46 a.m. until 6:08 p.m. when it enters the sign of Libra.
