PUBLISHER’S LETTER

SPROUTING THE TRUTH W

e live in an era where technology is a major part of our lives. Everything from lightbulbs connected to the Internet in our homes to cars that you do not even need to drive. As we have an abundance of opportunities for how we want to live and spend our time, we need to remember that not everything that shines is gold, and there are consequences of our technology advancements which are not always visible to our eyes, or obvious right away. It might take some time to see (or feel) the effects. In this issue, you can read Ania Wilewska’s article, The 5th Generation Internet (5G): Crossover of Humans and Machines about 5G technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), where everything is computerized and connected to the grid of smart technologies that will do many things for us. On one hand, life is much more efficient, cheaper, simpler and faster thanks to the Internet and its applications. On the other hand, we are becoming humans without souls, with our highest aspirations being a new phone, car, or “likes” on a post on Facebook.

KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER

If you need more energy and to feel more vibrant this spring, I recommend reading Sprouts and Wheatgrass: The Ultimate Superfoods by Colleen Derrico. Sprouts and wheatgrass are one of the most nutrition-dense foods on our planet. You can eat them raw in a salad, add to sandwiches, soups or even to your morning smoothies. Sprouts are surprisingly sweet and are finger foods that your kids will even enjoy eating. My journey with sprouts began two months ago with a bean sprout cereal for breakfast with some soaked chia seeds and a berry smoothie on top. According to cronometer.com, my breakfast covers over 50% of my daily needs for protein, vitamins and antioxidants. And, I get an energy boost that is better than drinking coffee in the morning! Add more sprouts to your diet and let me know how eating sprouts makes you feel. With spring returning, we are ready to get outside and return to the hustle-bustle after hibernating this winter! In this month’s interview, Seeking Connection, Janae Jean and Spencer Schluter talk with the authors of the book, Prayer: Forty Days of Practice, Justin McRoberts and Scott Erickson. Justin and Scott remind us how important it is to take time to reflect—even when we don’t feel like we have time to do so—and that we belong to something larger than ourselves. Those are just some of the articles, and there is much more nourishing information that will rejuvenate your body, expand your mind and feed your soul. Enjoy! The Best,

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

Q: This spring, my adult son is moving home after graduating college out of state. Many things have changed in both of our lives. Is there anything I should consider in advance? — Second Time Around

A: Dear Second Time Around, I haven’t found a good word to use to

speak about our “children” when they’re adults. For simplicity’s sake, I’m going to refer to them as children even though we’re speaking about adults. As conscious parents, we’re wise to be aware that the children we send away to college arrive back home as full-fledged adults. There’s no doubt that much has changed for both parties after they’ve been out “adulting” in the world.

I suggest having a candid conversation, acknowledging the life changes that all have made since he moved away. He has some new needs and you probably do too. What worked before will probably not work now. Both parties need to make some adjustments for flow and cohesiveness, and as this new chapter begins, everyone will start on the same page with a clear understanding of expectations.

I’d begin by setting a date for how long he’ll be there. The timing may be a bit fuzzy at first due to finding jobs and new housing, but it’s best to at least start with a tentative date. If the future deadline rolls around and he’s 10

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MARCH 2019

still nowhere close to moving, it will be much easier to reference your original agreement as a baseline to begin the conversation. You can review the progress that has been made up to that point, reassess expectations and renegotiate a later date if you wish.

Talk about sharing responsibilities around the house, i.g. grocery shopping, pet care, laundry, meals, errands and chores. After living together for a while, it’s human nature that we begin to fall into previous patterns. It’s crucial that everyone knows what’s expected of them so all are properly contributing to a smooth-running household. It’s far too easy to fall back into parent-child patterning where mom is expected to take care of everything. It’s important to be protective of your personal energy so you can spend it doing the things that are fulfilling to you to keep the stress down. After all, it’s not necessarily easy to adapt to another adult moving in, which often brings new pressures and crimps on some of the freedoms we’d realized after they left. You may also want to discuss if there will be any financial contributions for food, rent and utilities. Some parents are fine receiving nothing while their children are trying to get on their feet, while others expect them to contribute something. Another thing to consider is how to communicate about what time he’ll be home, if at all. It’s unreasonable

to think our adult children should now have a curfew when they’ve been used to making decisions for themselves, so we need to find ways to navigate this when they’re living with us. Most important is that respect is shown on each side for growth and the change of circumstances. Telling you in advance that he’s not going to be joining you for dinner, or won’t be coming home all night is merely being considerate. Sans religious beliefs, the last consideration for some may be a conversation around overnight guests. Part of conscious parenting is stretching ourselves to discuss things in ways that our parents maybe never did with us, which means creating new pathways never previously explored. It’s awkward for us to think about our children as sexual beings and vice versa. If overnight guests are fine, that should be stated, yet you may still want to define boundaries around that. Consider all the ins and outs of having a guest there and be clear on your expectations. It will save everyone some potential embarrassment in the long run. There will be an adjustment period as each of you settles in. The time has come and gone where you should be giving commands or trying to force your perspective on him. The relationship should flow into being more collaborative and respectful of personal issues. Gentle suggestions of your opinion which leave room for his decision-making allows ample space for you both as adults. Hovering and questioning what he’s doing like he’s a teenager will only cause building resentment, so I suggest walking lightly. Most importantly, enjoy your time learning how your child has grown in thought and opinion. It’s not often we get an opportunity to spend extended time with our adult children.

SEEKING CONNECTION

Interview with Justin McRoberts and Scott Erickson by Janae Jean and Spencer Schluter

For this interview, we had the honor of speaking with the dynamic and engaging Justin McRoberts and Scott Erickson. Justin and Scott collaborated together on the book Prayer: Forty Days of Practice, which features images interspersed with reflections and practices to inspire connection. We spoke with them about how prayer is part of the human experience, uniting and connecting us to the Divine and one another, as well as the arts, sacred spaces and building community. Justin McRoberts is a musician and songwriter, as well as an experienced speaker and teacher, giving workshops and leading retreats across the country. He has recorded 15 music projects since 1999 and is also the curator and host of the @Sea Podcast and @Sea Events. Justin has also authored two books about 12

the creative life. To learn more, visit www.JustinMcRoberts. com. Follow him on Twitter and Instagram @JustinMcRoberts. Scott Erickson is a touring painter, performance speaker and creative priest who mixes autobiography, mythology and aesthetics. His touring one-man show, We Are Not Troubled Guests, is a multimedia storytelling experience. Scott has been a working artist for more than a decade and his work has appeared on CNN, in National Geographic, as well as on Tyler Perry’s Passion Live on Fox TV. Scott draws from his background as an educator and visual communicator in all of his endeavors. He speaks at workshops and retreats across the nation. To learn more about his artwork, current live appearances and to access his downloadable art show,

Spiritual Practices, see www.ScottEricksonArt.com. Follow him on Twitter and Instagram @ScottThePainter. The following is only an excerpt from our full interview. Listen to the entire conversation by subscribing to the Conscious Community Podcast on your favorite podcatcher app or by visiting www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com. Janae Jean: To start off, can you tell us a bit about your backgrounds? Scott, you are a visual artist, and Justin, you started in music. How did you come to write a book? Scott Erickson: I’ve been a practicing visual artist for over a decade. When I tell people I’m a visual artist, their first question is usually, “How do you make a living?” So, I respond, “I do a lot of little things to make a little something.” I’m a painter, illustrator; I do art shows; I sell work. I’ve started doing more performance pieces, these multimedia storytelling events. Now I’m an author. So, it’s a lot of projects going on at the same time. But predominantly, I would say a lot of our language and ideas are based in imagery. When we want to have a transformative experience, we have to deal with the inner images that we have that we’re rooting our narratives and conversations in. Justin McRoberts: I’ve always talked a lot, and since I was a teenager I’ve been using words in some way, shape or form to create moments. I started playing music professionally in ’98. A lot of what would happen is the storytelling element of the shows would just take off. People would comment that they were enjoying the storytelling just as much as the music, and I recognized that I was enjoying that more than the music. Then I started putting things down in blogs…and then on paper. Spencer Schluter: Are you both coming from a Christian background? Scott: Depends on what you mean by ‘Christian.’ That can stand for a lot of things in the world that I wouldn’t align with. Spirituality is making what’s invisible visible, and religion is the rituals, rhythms and practices that we develop around that visualization. So, the framework of Protestantism is what I grew up in. It still works for me, but there are aspects of it that I had to let go because those practices didn’t work anymore. I’ve found a renewed depth in a Franciscan spirituality; I’ve found some really helpful practices through the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. Justin: Within the context of my Christianity, my more informative voices have been predominantly on the Catholic side, voices like Henri Nouwen or Thomas Merton. Beyond that, some of the more informative texts have been the Tao Te Ching and The Tao of Pooh. The Tao of Pooh was a tremendous book for me, spiritualiy. Depending on what you mean, I will identify as a Christian. JJ: On the cover of your book, you have this image of a rowboat with hands in the shape of a heart holding it. Where do you find this ‘heart-space’ in prayer and connect to a general sense of love?

Scott: I was having a particularly difficult season financially. It’s not like when you decide to be an artist the Universe is like, “Here’s all the cash you need!” I had anxiety. When you’re self-employed, it feels like every day you should be hustling because you are holding this all together. Take a day of rest? That feels insane in our modern culture. I think visually, so my prayer was, “How should I think about working?” This image came to me. My interpretation of it is: You can waste every day. You can distract yourself and not deal with your life; you can be lazy and not get anywhere. There is work. It’s a rowboat, not a sailboat. A rowboat needs your effort to get going. Also, consider the context you are in; it’s not all up to you. I think a great paradox of any great spiritual or wisdom tradition is that your life is your practice and your formation, but it’s also resting in your becoming. The Sabbath is a rest to say, “it’s not all up to you.” There are other unseen forces helping your life transform. It’s a detox from the opiate of self-employment; I need that detox to approach the next six days. So, that image helps me to remember that. That image is like a doorway, or as we like to say an excavation tool, to that conversation of my life, and that’s what our book was trying to be. Traditionally, prayer books are five paragraphs to read in the morning that are telling you what prayer is. This book is a one-sentence prayer and an image. These are excavation tools to get to the content. The content is the internal conversation you are having with reality, existence and the Giver of Existence. Our premise is that prayer is not a religious thing; it’s a human activity. We have friends that come from a religious tradition and friends who don’t come from any tradition at all who were telling us, “I have this inclination to pray and I don’t know how to do it.” Our work became putting that together and that’s where the book came from. Justin: Foundationally, what we hear in the prayer of voice is the love. I think that’s actually what the human heart seeks in spiritual practice, seeks in prayer, seeks in meditation. It’s a matter of just “being.” I don’t think anyone just wants to “be.” I think you want to know that it’s more than okay for you to be, that there’s a joyful belonging to the Universe, the world and those around you and that kind of loving reception. Before Jesus did anything that we recognize traditionally as the life of Christ, he’s baptized and he hears the voice of God say, “You’re my son, I love you and I’m proud of you.” I think that’s the essence of prayer. It’s the voice of the Divine saying, “You’re mine, I love you and I like what you’re about.” Janae Jean serves as editor, social media manager, recipe columnist and podcaster for Conscious Community Magazine. [ALL ABOUT TOWN]

THE WISDOM OF OUR YOUTH – PART 3 EMILY TERAN - Westmont High School – February 2019 by Theresa Puskar

In my opinion, our ability to express ourselves through our creativity is one of the most potent and deeply transformative gifts we’ve been given on this earth. Creative expression has great healing power, and it can alter us from the inside out. Years ago, when I was living in Vancouver, Canada, I was taking a watercolor painting class. On one particular fall day, I spent an entire afternoon experimenting with my paints. When I finally emerged from my apartment, I happened to see a fellow actress friend, as I sat waiting for my bus. She looked at me, and then took a second glance. “Something is really different about you today. What have you been up to?” When I told her that I spent most of my day painting, she immediately understood. “That’s what it is. You are so calm. You are so much more peaceful than I’ve ever seen you before.” I’ll never forget that conversation. It had quite an impact on me, because she was right. I remember how much joy, deep inner-peace and connection I felt after spending my day immersed in my art. 14

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MARCH 2019

Theresa Puskar and Emily Teran

Years later, I have also experienced the same feeling at the pottery wheel, playing with collage or intention doll-making at my favorite creative haven, Whispers from the Moon (Lisa Sorce Schmitz’s art studio in Oak Park). I try to get to Lisa’s gorgeous studio at least once a year to feed my soul and express what’s in my heart. This is the third article I have written that focuses on The Wisdom of Our Youth. As I glanced through several poems that were submitted, I was particularly struck by Emily Teran’s piece, “Poetry is a Flashlight.” In it, she celebrates the freedom that she feels when expressing herself in this art form. New to the art of words, Emily shared that she never found traditional writing very stimulating, but finds poetry particularly liberating. “With poetry, we can share a lot of unspoken truths. We don’t have to come out and say things directly, and because of this, we are able to share more ideas.”

POETRY IS A FLASHLIGHT By Emily Teran

The great thing about poetry is that you can write about absolutely anything You can write about the summer, your dog or about some kid that lives down the block You could write about trees or fog or your hatred for baby talk Poetry is the wind underneath a writers’ wing The great thing about poetry is that you can have hidden meaning You can tell someone to f*** off without using a finger Its confusing message will leave a feeling to linger You can say you’re mad without ever screaming The great thing about poetry is that you can choose your words We all have a chance to speak, a voice Let us ever be grateful that we have the choice Poetry is the song in every bird The great thing about poetry is that you can address love a feeling Like a warm embrace or a flower Or something held against you, a great power Poetry is a part of the process of healing The great thing about poetry is that you are allowed to be sad Write about death, write about hopelessness Write about the things that nobody notices Poetry is being angry at your dad The great thing about poetry is that you give life color Your words fill the air with blues and reds It’ll give you signals til they get through to your heads Poetry makes the world less duller The great thing about poetry is that it gives you insight An invitation to the writer’s state of mind A pair of glasses to leave you unblind Poetry is a flashlight

To be fully expressive in whatever art form one pursues, I believe that one has to be in an environment that supports non-judgment. Years ago, when I was doing graduate studies in Theatre Directing at Purdue University, I remember struggling, because the head of the Drama Department was, in my opinion, a bully and intimidated his students and the performers in his productions. I found his behavior the antithesis of all that supports creativity. How could anyone feel safe to open their hearts and souls and expose the deepest part of themselves when they felt fearful? In the end, I decided to leave the program, because I did not feel it fostered the kind of educational environment in which I wanted to spend three years investing my time, energy and creativity. Part of the reason why Emily fell in love with poetry was the encouragement that she received from her creative writing instructor, Mrs. Anna Oshel-Jakubowksi. “She is fun, and she really allows her students to express whatever they are feeling,” Emily shares. She goes on to say, “When I write, I help myself. Thus, my attitude towards the situation changes, and allows me to be more honest with the person with whom I am struggling.” When was the last time you gave yourself some time to create? When my daughter was in grade school, I cared for her and her friend every Wednesday after school. The two of them loved doing artwork, and I made a conscious commitment to spend a couple of hours each week doing the artwork with them. It was tough at the time because of that incessant to-do list that I always felt compelled to focus upon. Do you focus on your never-ending to-do list, and avoid giving yourself time to create? Haven’t you noticed that they are never-ending? I suggest that within the next month, you allow yourself at least two hours to write, paint, draw, collage, play music or do something else creative. Note how you feel prior to creating, and then reflect on how you feel after you’ve taken that time for yourself. I believe that taking that time will not only raise your spirits but your energy as well. Emily’s final words of advice to our youth, “If you have a voice, use it. A lot of the world’s tragedies happen when you say nothing.” So, speak your truth, and when you do it through creative forms of expression, not only does it raise your energy, but it adds beauty to the world by speaking to the souls of humankind! THE 5TH GENERATION INTERNET (5G)

CROSSOVER OF HUMANS AND MACHINES by Ania Wilewska The technological progress is rapidly leading us into the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with the Internet of Things (IoT) being the tech giant’s new catchphrase. What exactly is the Internet of Things? With the advancement of technology, we are becoming more and more connected. The internet and smartphones have given us the connection to the rest of the world that we were always longing for. We started out with the dial-up internet, which took quite some time to connect. Today, we can tell our “personal assistant,” Alexa, that paper towels are to be at our doorstep in an hour. IoT will be connecting all of our devices to the internet, anything from the coffeemaker, washing machine, smartphone, to autonomous vehicles, and even humans. The former Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman, Tom Wheeler, briefly explained in 2016, “5G will connect the Internet of Everything. If something can be connected, it will be connected in a 5G world. But with predictions of hundreds of billions of microchip-enabled products from pill bottles to plant waterers, you can be sure of only one thing: the biggest IoT has yet to be imagined.” The convenience and expectation that technology created sets us into panic as anxiety overwhelms us when a page takes longer than five seconds to load. 5G internet will satisfy the increasing hunger for speed along with connecting everything to the grid. Both technological innovation and progress are seen as achieving higher speed without taking into consideration the long-term effects. Tom Wheeler further states, “Unlike some countries, we do not believe we should spend the next couple of years studying what 5G should be, how it should operate, and how to allocate spectrum, based on those assumptions.” 5G roll-out includes antennas which “aim and amplify signal,” incorporates smart technology such as smart meters, smart houses and appliances. The current and new frequency bands are listed below: 16

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MARCH 2019

3G 4G 5G

Frequency Band

Internet Speed

1.8-2.5 GHz 2-8 GHz 28-49GHz

Up to 2Mbps 5-20 Mbps At least 2 Gbps

To put this in perspective, FCC guidelines propose Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) which applies to frequency bands over 6GHz. “The Limits for General Population/Uncontrolled Exposure” table found in FCC guidelines from 1997, includes a frequency range of 0.3-100,000 MHz. The guidelines consider radio frequency (RF) exposure for 30 minutes only and only one device at a time. FCC further states “the most restrictive limits on whole-body exposure are in the frequency range of 30-300 MHz where the human body absorbs RF energy most efficiently when the whole body is exposed.” 5G will generate much higher frequencies. We are already exposed to RF 24 hours per day, and if everything is to be connected in the era of the Internet of Things, then the electro-smog will pollute our environment even further with unimaginable consequences to humans and the whole environment. The antennas that are being built will be placed on every street lamp, on buildings, stores, billboards, etc. and due to very high-frequency bands, the antennas will have to be in very close distance to one another. Additionally, thousands of satellites, that may have even higher frequency bands, will be launched into space that will be required for the 5G rollout to be successful. The race to 5G has already begun. The top industrial nations have entered the competition of who will have 5G first. According to CTIA.org the United States has to do everything to win, “Because when we win the race to 5G, we all win.” What seems to be the rush? Why not understand what we are dealing with first? Tom Wheeler certainly does not want to focus on any

type of research into 5G. The supporters of 5G from the CTIA claim “5G will be even more transformative—making our lives better, our communities safer, and our nation more prosperous.” Certainly, we will have very different, transformed lives with everything being connected to the grid, but will that really make our lives better with internet doing everything for us? We will find ourselves living in smart cities but becoming dumber. “Smart cities, dumb people.” Is that a hidden slogan of 5G? But our nations will be more prosperous, well, maybe certain people. It’s all about the financial gains that are involved. What about safety? We all want to live in a safer world, especially when there is so much chaos going on, that a potential of putting a stop to it gives us a perspective of peace shining on the world. Can 5G provide that? China is one of the participants in the 5G rollout. One of the possibilities that being on the grid provides us with is cybersecurity. China has created a super surveillance system including facial recognition and the ability to find a suspect within minutes. This surveillance also includes a rating system; if you are a well-behaved citizen, you can participate in society. If your rating goes down, you are not able to fly or buy a house. This sounds like something taken out of George Orwell’s book, 1984. A small detail that needs to be considered, is that as technology advances, hackers are not sleeping either. There is a huge threat that once everything is connected to the grid, it will provide a very easy opportunity for a city or a nation to be hacked. Perhaps FCC and the regulatory bodies, as well as their equivalents of the 5G race participants, should take that into consideration. The growing concern of the scientific and medical communities allows the public to have greater access to science that provides evidence that electromagnetic radiation is not as safe as the industry claims. One such resource is the Bioinitiative Report 2012, which lists frequencies and their health effects backed by published research. The frequencies listed in the report include the 3G and 4G and based on those we should seriously start questioning 5G and the disastrous health consequences. Over 230 scientists from over 40 countries expressed their serious concern for the 5G roll-out by forming the 5G Appeal, “Numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines.” The listed health effects include “cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans. Damage goes well beyond the human race, as there is growing evidence of harmful effects to both plants and animals.” This appeal was filed in 2015. The 5G Appeal refers to the Nuremberg Code of 1949, which was formed as a consequence of WWII where informed consent is required for experiments that are to be performed on human subjects. The concerned scientists state: “The Nuremberg code (1949) applies to all experiments on humans, thus including the roll-out of 5G with new, higher

RF-EMF exposure. All such experiments: ‘should be based on previous knowledge (e.g. an expectation derived from animal experiments) that justifies the experiment. No experiment should be conducted, where there is an a priori reason to believe that death or disabling injury will occur; except, perhaps, in those experiments where the experimental physicians also serve as subjects.’ (Nuremberg code pts 3-5). Already published scientific studies show that there is ‘a priori reason to believe’ in real health hazards.” Additional examples of the hazards of the alarmed scientists include: lowered sperm count in all species and bee colony collapses. A huge threat that we are facing if we continue on this path is species extinction. Science in Society found a study in Greece reporting that “mice exposed to mobile phone microwaves at 1.68 m W/m 2 became completely sterile after five generations, while those exposed to 10.53 mW/m 2 became completely sterile after three generations.” What can we do in this helpless situation that we are finding ourselves in? Unfortunately, we are all aware that industry has tremendous power over our governmental agency and sadly, a lot of universities, which are often performing studies that show results favorable to the industry. The power that we have is to stay informed and share knowledge and independent research. Don’t rely on someone to tell you, go to the articles referenced below and do your own research. Research what Dr. Magda Havas, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, Dr. Olle Johansson, Dr. Graham Downing and Devra Davis have to say about the increasing exposure to electromagnetic radiation. There is a lot of very valuable information and videos at Electromagnetic Radiation Safety, www.saferemr.com. Write to your local and state officials to look into this subject. Town hall meetings are a great option to get your voice heard. Most likely, many representatives and your local community members are not even aware this is a problem, however, some are aware and we need to ensure that we as people are aware of this issue and we want to our future generations live and thrive in a safe world. Let’s encourage our regulatory agencies to do their jobs and regulate the industry instead of the industry regulating the agencies, which were put in place to protect the good of the people. Spread this knowledge forward and stay safe. Let’s take actions to save this planet and the residents that inhabit it. Go to ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com for a full list of references. [FROM THE HEART]

FEAR IS THE LIAR by Alan Cohen

I recently watched a touching documentary, Tea with the Dames, an intimate chat between four legendary British actresses, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Joan Plowright and Eileen Atkins, all of whom have been made a Dame. I found it a treat to momentarily peek into the lives of four esteemed thespians. At one point the subject of fear came up. Judi Dench admitted, “I still feel quite anxious when I have to act in a film.” I was stunned! Here is one of the world’s finest actresses who has often been cast as the Queen of England 18

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MARCH 2019

and exudes utter confidence in her roles, now at 85 years of age is still plagued by fear! To my further surprise, her peers, also among the most respected actresses in the world, confessed that they too, are camera shy. This shocking revelation confirmed to me a phenomenon I see in many successful professionals: Even while the voice of fear pursues us, we can go on to create huge success. That voice often disguises itself as “fraud guilt”—the idea that “I am a phony and if people knew the truth about me, they

would not pay me, like me or want me.” A survey of top Hollywood movie studio CEOs asked, “What do you fear most?” The most common answer was, “I am afraid that people will find out I don’t really know what I am doing.” Meanwhile, these execs were turning out fabulous movies, earning many millions of dollars for their studios. Success is not the liar. Fear is. Don Juan, the mentor in Carlos Castaneda’s classic series of books of conversations with his Yaqui shaman

teacher, told Castaneda, “Fear never really goes away. It sits on your shoulder and whispers in your ear, trying to frighten and belittle you. The spiritual warrior hears the voice of fear but does not give in to it.” Phil Alden Robinson, writer and director of one of my favorite films, Field of Dreams, recounts that during filming, “Every night I went back to my room and thought I had failed.” Meanwhile, Robinson was turning out a blockbuster film that was nominated for three Academy Awards and has become a classic. A Course in Miracles tells us that there are only two emotions, and thus only two voices we might listen to, love and fear. We all have a fear voice that chides us with all kinds of threats. At some point, we must stop running from the fear voice and confront it. The question is not, “Does fear taunt you?” The question is, “Are you willing to move ahead anyway?” My mentor Hilda Charlton used to say, “The dogs bark, and the caravan moves on.” The deepest purpose of our life is to rip the mask off of fear to reveal the love it hides. We must cease to live as if we are small, and claim our authentic magnificence. Even while scary newscasts and prophecies bite at our heels, we must move on. At the height of the Beatles’ illustrious career, Ringo Starr decided he wasn’t fit to be in a band as talented as the Beatles. He went to John Lennon and told him, “I’m leaving the group because I’m not playing well and I feel unloved and out of it, and you three are really close.” John replied, “I thought it was you three!” Then Ringo told Paul McCartney he felt like an outsider. Paul replied, “I thought it was you three!” Ringo didn’t bother going to George Harrison, who might have given a similar reply. The idea that any of these four—Ringo, John, Paul, or George—was not a “real” Beatle seems laughable and ludicrous since each of those musicians was talented

in his own way, and their unique synergy made the Beatles the most successful entertainers in history. But each of them had to face and deal with his own demons. If even the Beatles suffered fraud guilt, you can see what a liar that voice is, and why you should give it no credence and not let it stop you on your own path to success. A Course in Miracles also tells us, “Fear is not justified in any form,” and asks us to remember, “I am at home. Fear is the stranger here.” Ralph Waldo Emerson boldly suggested, “Do the thing you fear, and the death of fear is certain.” Consider all the things you have feared, and how many of them have come true. Of the very small percentage that have come true, you have continued to move ahead and even learned valuable lessons from the experience. In the human experience, we all feel fear at some time. How you deal with

it determines whether it has power over your life or if you claim dominion over it. Fear and love cannot coexist in the same mind or place. The more we choose love, the more that becomes our prevalent experience. We have been taught by word or example that fear is real and love is the illusion. But the world is often inside out and upside down. Only love speaks truth. IMPROVE YOURSELF WITH HYPNOSIS by C. Scot Giles, D.Min., DNGH When people hear someone talk about hypnosis, the images that come to mind often are of nightclub acts or sinister characters from fiction. Some people react in fear, thinking that a hypnotist can do things to others with his or her mind. The reality is very different. Formalized in the eighteenth century, the hypnotic arts and sciences are now well developed. Science can explain much of why hypnosis is effective. Many hospitals routinely employ hypnosis as a form of anesthesia or to help patients manage the side effects of medication. We all have a part of our mind that is subconscious. This part of our mind controls the things we do habitually that lie below the level of conscious awareness. We need to have this ability as we cannot possibly consciously think about everything we do. When someone reaches for a cup of coffee, they don’t consciously estimate the distance between the hand and cup, nor does that person decide how much pressure to use to grasp the handle of the cup. Perhaps, when this person was an infant they did go through some sort of careful trial and error to learn 24

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MARCH 2019

how to grasp objects, but now all of that is done subconsciously. Similarly, a man does not decide every morning about which side of his face he will start shaving first. Once upon a time, he did decide, but he has done the behavior so many times that it becomes automatic. He doesn’t think about it. Instead, he just does it; it’s subconscious. The subconscious part of our mind regulates everything we do automatically. It can control movement, how we react to pain, our characteristic emotional responses and the thoughts that come to mind when we have certain experiences. But, there is a problem. The subconscious process is an immensely powerful goal-achieving mechanism. Once it has accepted a program of thought, feeling or behavior, it will stubbornly carry it out even if a person consciously does not want it to. Hypnotists call this our “Critical Faculty.” It will find a way to deny, dismiss or ignore any input that is not in agreement with what it believes is a correct thought, feeling or behavior. Imagine that a teacher scolded a young child and told the child he or she was stupid. If the child’s subconscious mind accept-

ed that, all of the counterexamples and praise of parents, other teachers and friends will be ignored. The child grows into an adult who doubts their intelligence. Likewise, if your subconscious process was persuaded that you are ugly, unpopular, unlovable or awkward, it will do all in its considerable power to keep you thinking that way. If your subconscious believes that it is cool to use tobacco, you will find giving up cigarettes very hard indeed. The same holds for your beliefs about food, sickness, pain and a host of other things. If what is in your subconscious mind is benevolent and enhancing, you will have an easy time with life. Most of us pick up a lot of negative programs and beliefs, and our subconscious mind guards them as if they were gold. What happens in hypnotism is that one is guided into a state of mindful relaxation. While the term “hypnosis” is derived from the Greek word for sleep, hypnosis is not sleep. In fact, brain scanning technology shows us that the hypnotized brain is quite alert. It’s just in a state of relaxed concentration. The helpful thing about this relaxed state is that the Critical Faculty goes offline temporarily. It is possible to get new information into the subconscious process and change how it responds. A hypnotist does this by the artful use of suggestion. Suggestion uses a person’s ability to absorb information from the environment without being consciously aware of it. Once absorbed into the mind, suggestions about changing behavior, mood, habits or sensation can influence a person toward a desired goal or a positive change in behavior, sensation or mood. In the hypnotic state, a person with a painful hand can be influenced so it seems the hand is very cold and numb. Someone who overeats every time they are upset can be influenced to do some other behavior as a way to self-soothe. The possibilities are many. One can do hypnotism for oneself by studying self-hypnotism. There are good books, recordings, videos and even smartphone apps that show the way. For serious issues, especially if they are emotionally fraught, it’s best to consult a trained professional. Some psychotherapists and physicians have training in hypnotism, and there are professional hypnotists who have completed a course of study with hypnotism organizations, such as the National Guild of Hypnotists (the oldest and largest hypnotism organization in the world). Some practitioners call themselves “hypnotherapists,” while others use the “hypnotist” designation. The two words are considered synonyms, although in some states the law directs which one can be used. Hypnotism is effective and can achieve results quickly. However, the skill, training and experience of practitioners vary. Don’t hesitate to seek referrals from someone you trust and always check out client reviews and a practitioner’s reputation. Rev. Dr. C. Scot Giles is a board-certified diplomate and a certified HypnoCoach® with the National Guild of Hypnotists. Visit www.csgiles.org or call 630-668-1141 to learn more.

SPROUTS AND WHEATGRASS The Ultimate Superfoods by Colleen Derrico

The term “superfood” is one that is used quite frequently these days. Healthy eating, plant-based diets and juicing trends are on the rise, but many people are still surprised when they hear about the amazing nutritional properties found in sprouts and wheatgrass. Not only are sprouts a great addition to any dish, but they also add large amounts of highly concentrated nutrients to your diet. Although sprouts are phenomenal for you, there is still a stigma leftover from a salmonella outbreak that occurred during the 1990s. 26

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MARCH 2019

This outbreak left a bad name for the sprouting industry and permanently scared many people away from eating one of the healthiest foods on the planet. Here you’ll find some information about the nutritional benefits found in sprouts and wheatgrass—along with how the sprouting industry is working hard to grow the safest sprouts yet. The most commonly known sprout is alfalfa, but sprouts come in all different shapes, sizes and flavors. They include the mild and crunchy red clover, spicy radish, flavorful onion and the nutri-

tion packed broccoli. All sprouts are a tremendous source of chlorophyll, which acts as a natural blood cleanser and detoxifier. Sprouts are also a great source of protein and are the perfect addition to the diet of vegetarians and vegans. Although sprouts are tiny, they pack a huge nutritional punch. Two ounces of broccoli sprouts contain as much nutrition as two pounds of actual broccoli. Broccoli sprouts also contain high amounts of sulforaphanes, strong antioxidants which can help kill free radicals, assist with the healing from

cancer, autoimmune diseases and chronic illness. Microgreens have also recently become popular among chefs and the general public as a colorful garnish and for their nutritional benefits. What many don’t realize is that microgreens are essentially sprouts that are grown in a medium such as soil, whereas sprouts are grown hydroponically (just in water). While sprouts are a living food that is technically still growing after harvest, microgreens are cut from the root before eating, and therefore, do not have the same “live energy” that a sprout has. Wheatgrass is another superfood growing in popularity at local juice bars and can be grown hydroponically or in a medium such as soil. Unlike sprouts, wheatgrass can only be juiced, due to the fact that our bodies cannot digest grass the way a cow does. Wheatgrass is considered a “complete food” and contains everything from vitamins and minerals to protein. It contains so much nutrition that a one ounce shot of wheatgrass has the same amount of nutrition as two pounds of leafy green vegetables! Many health-conscious consumers are aware that even if you eat an all organic diet, we are still exposed to many toxins and harmful chemicals in our everyday environment that are unfortunately beyond our control. Wheatgrass is a great addition to anyone’s diet for this very reason. Not only does wheatgrass contain such a high concentration of vitamins and minerals, but it also contains a high amount of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll cleanses the blood, removes toxins, heavy metals and carcinogens from your system. Ann Wigmore, a pioneer in the holistic industry, cured herself of colon cancer using wheatgrass. She also wrote several books and even started her own holistic health clinic based on her research and personal healing journey. In the 1970s, sprouts were a popular health food item often grown at home

(most commonly in a mason jar). An unfortunate salmonella outbreak in the 1990s caused large numbers of people to become extremely ill. This led to quick action by the FDA, and sprouts were moved to the hazardous food item list. It is understandable why sprouts have remained on this list since then. Sprouts are grown in a warm aqueous environment, the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. So, what are sprout growers doing to ensure a safe product? The key to any growing operation’s success is high-quality seed. Sprout growers must create guidelines as to how they go about approving seed suppliers and require proof of food safety audits, letters of guarantee and possible organic certificates from their suppliers. With each batch of seed that is delivered the seed supplier must provide proof of seed batch testing. This means each batch of seed has been tested for the germination rate, E. coli 0157:h7 and Salmonella. Some seed suppliers even pre-treat the seed with an approved sanitizing treatment before delivery. If the supplier is not the one treating the seed, then it is the responsibility of the grower to do so.

the forefront, and it is time for sprout growers to spread this information and educate customers. These latest safety standards, along with the nutritional benefits found in sprouts, should help encourage the public to confidently purchase sprouts for their families. When it comes to superfoods, sprouts and wheatgrass are a simple addition to your diet and can truly make a difference in your health. Colleen Derrico works at Chicago Indoor Garden. Like many farmers, Colleen wears many hats and handles everything from the family business’ social media to food safety and organic certification. Chicago Indoor Garden is a small, family-owned and operated urban farm that is proud to be Certified Organic, food safety audited and is also currently working on their Non-GMO Certification. Visit www. chicagoindoorgarden.com, or following them on Facebook or Instagram @ chicagoindoorgarden.

Approximately 48 hours into the growing process, water samples (referred to as spent irrigation water) are collected for each batch of sprouts being grown. These samples are tested for E. coli 0157:h7 and salmonella. Sprout growers are required to have a hold and release policy to ensure that no sprouts are released for consumption until negative test results have been received. Along with testing of the spent irrigation water, sprout growers are now required to perform regular environmental testing for listeria. This is yet another precaution taken to ensure that the sprouts are grown in a sanitary environment and will not be contaminated by bacteria during the growing process. For several years, sprout growers have been working hard in conjunction with the FDA to create a safer growing process. Due to the recent lettuce outbreaks, food safety is on CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

FULL MOON MARCH 20, 2019 by Donna Stellhorn What is this Full Moon about and what makes it special? Did I say last month that zero-degree Full Moons are rare? Oops! Here comes the Aries/Libra Full Moon at zero degrees on the first day of Spring, signaling very strong energy for doing new things and walking new paths. The Sun is combust Chiron bringing the opportunity to heal painful memories and past guilt. At the same time, Mars is making a hard aspect to Jupiter causing you to adjust your plans as you are asked to do things you may not feel you really know how to do. It’s a “fake it until you make it” moment. Venus is aspecting both Jupiter and Mars in a highly creative, somewhat sexy way. This can lead to artistic breakthroughs, or even, pregnancy. Mercury (which is retrograde) has just passed Neptune making some communications unclear. Saturn is inching closer to Pluto which can thrust you into the light of success. Will your fears and insecurities make you run from that light? This is a time to look at self-sabotaging behaviors and clear them out.

How can you best work with the energy of this Full Moon? This Full Moon is about your relationships with others and your relationship with yourself. There will be a desire to move quickly from one task to another while you have a set of earbuds stuck in your ears blasting your favorite tunes. But, this isn’t beneficial for you now. Stop and take a breath. Allow your 28

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MARCH 2019

feelings to come to the surface. When they do, don’t judge, instead acknowledge your feelings and you will notice they become a lot quieter. In your career, you may be asked to do something outside your comfort zone. It’s okay to say “yes”. In your relationships, you may have to restate something or find another way to convey your message. Take a breath and say it again. You have an opportunity this whole year to make great progress on your goals. It takes discipline, integrity and action (which is Saturn, more Saturn and a little bit of Mars.) Take some bold steps on your path this month.

ARIES Relationships are highlighted. Someone close may have hurt feelings that need some soothing but a few kind words from you can form a healing balm and get the relationship back on track. You may have interesting dreams this month. Keep a dream journal by your bed to take some notes. Meditation or yoga is very good this month. There can be some adjustments needed in travel plans, and this could end up costing you some money. Buy travel insurance, if possible, when booking your trip.

TAURUS Your health is key this month. You have an opportunity to find some solutions to a health or sleep issue that’s been troubling

you for a while. Difficult memories may bubble to the surface. Consider writing letters to apologize or explain your position. You can burn the letters if you don’t want to send them. Money promised to you through a job may actually come through now because you finally have mentioned how late the payment is. Saying something is the best way to get paid.

GEMINI Children and creativity are what’s important. Kids need more attention than usual. A creative project can be completed. A friend may take offense at something you’ve said, and you may need to mend fences. Remember, it’s better to happy than right. Your spiritual connection is strong now. You may want to attend religious services or start a spiritual practice at home. Important messages are coming. A set of rules at work dissolves and everyone has a little more freedom.

CANCER Home is highlighted. You may be doing repairs or decluttering. This is a good time to sell your house and find another. This month, do a little thinking about your career trajectory. If you’re not on the path you want to be, consider writing out a list of steps to get you there. Your daily life tasks and duties are impinging on your freedom and you find it irritating. Look at where you can be more efficient or hire someone to do what you don’t want to do. A prayer of yours is answered this month.

LEO Communication is at the forefront. It’s good to focus on sending out positive messages, even if you have the desire to cut someone down to size. You have the opportunity to recognize that you don’t need to know everything to move forward on a project. Work/life balance is needed this month. Doing things with kids or friends. Enjoyable activities need to be scheduled in, so you don’t miss opportunities. Someone you care about comes with an offer of help. Listen to their sage advice.

VIRGO Finances are strong this month. You have opportunities to increase your income. It would be good to spend some time learning about investing and insurance options. Also, protect yourself by changing passwords to important sites. You may be deciding between taking a trip or staying home and putting the money into house repairs. Consider how you can do both by making more money or economizing somewhere. Be attentive to people you care about, and you will receive love in return.

LIBRA The emphasis this month is on putting yourself first. Forming new positive habits will have a great impact on your life going forward. The vision of who you want to be can guide you this month to better behaviors. Business energy is strong; if you have a business at home or you work with real estate, construction or interior design. Financing for a business or debt repayment can be secured now. For your love life, be aware that if you “fall into bed” with someone new, you may regret it in the morning.

SCORPIO Your inner life is the focus now. This is a good time to look at the habits and daily activities with which you build your life. It’s time to demand higher standards for yourself. Signing contracts can be life changing this month. Read over the contracts carefully. A possible windfall from an investment or homerelated activity is possible. There may be a repayment of a debt owed to you. Also, there’s a strong creativity spark within you that’s ready to come forth. Give it some room to expand by indulging in some fun activity.

SAGITTARIUS Friendships are highlighted. It’s time to get out of the house and go see some of the people you care about. If you have kids you may find that one or more of them need your guidance now. Getting help with fertility issues is also good this month. Your finances will improve greatly if you go back to having a written budget and some controls on spending. You may be overdoing it at work. Get some quality rest if possible or try to get out of the office and work at a coffee shop for a while.

CAPRICORN Your reputation is what’s important now. The content you put out into the world for work or socially is more noticed by more people. An issue with a family member (or extended family member) can be resolved through active listening and talking. A parking situation you thought was resolved needs your attention again. You have more luck and protection this month to take risks especially involving investments, business projects, or creative work. Display something you’ve done so others can see it.

AQUARIUS Knowledge is at the forefront this month. If you’re in school, it’s good to find more efficient ways of studying. Try to release past insecurities you have around tests or reports. Given enough time, you can learn anything. This is a good period to declutter and sell off stuff you no longer need. If you have trouble sleeping because of nagging thoughts, get up and write a list of creative solutions. Place the list under your pillow to be inspired the next day. A friend may give you an opportunity involving real estate.

PISCES Resources from others are the focus this month. Put your attention on how rich your life is and you will attract even more resources for your own use. Watch out for impulsive spending when you are feeling strong emotions. This is a good month to change your look, hairstyle or how you dress. Don’t think a friend’s absence has something to do with you. People around you are very busy now. A career opportunity comes to you when you don’t feel prepared but try for it anyway. Pull an allnighter to get prepared, if you have to. Donna Stellhorn is an Astrologer, Feng Shui expert and author of 15 books. WOMEN WHO HEAL IN UNEXPECTED WAYS by Ayn Carrillo-Gailey Healers come to their power by different means. Angela Nichole, the inspirational founder of AdventureFit and a Reiki practitioner, nurtured hers after a car collision, where she was pronounced dead at the scene, only to be revived, then told she’d never walk again or have children. Using sheer will power, she was able to motivate herself to eventually accomplish both. That inspired her to seek formal training and certification to help others overcome their obstacles. There are also women whose healing powers come to them in a seemingly supernatural manner, sometimes from birth. Dr. Wanda Pratnicka, worldrenowned for healing those afflicted by spirits, aka ghosts, falls into this category. She earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy, an M.A. in Psychology and a B.A. in Parapsychology and combines that education with a natural ability to counsel the living and ghosts. I asked her to dispel what she feels are the top five misconceptions around ghosts.

MISCONCEPTION 1: Ghosts can

also helps ghosts free themselves from people. Many ghosts need her counseling to pass through to the other side of death’s curtain.

MISCONCEPTION 3: For spirit removal to work, the person possessed must give their permission. On the contrary, many people who request a check-up or spirit removal do so on behalf of a loved one without notifying that person.

MISCONCEPTION 4: It’s impossible to tell if you or a loved one is possessed. There are definitely signs. In extreme cases, facial features or the actual build of a possessed person can drastically change. A possessed person may also suddenly give off a very foul, unpleasant odor. The most common physical reactions to a new or attempted possession are a strong headache and stomach ache, often coupled with vomiting and diarrhea which wears off as soon as the person’s body becomes accustomed to

being possessed. People who are possessed often report feeling a presence, as if someone unseen is watching them, touching them, or talking to them. Others can suddenly feel cold, experience chills, or awaken every so often. After the possession takes place, symptoms are more diverse. Most often, these are racing thoughts, a feeling of discouragement, irritability, aggression, mood swings, unceasing fear, panic, sight disorders, temporary or permanent loss of memory, allergies (especially to metals,) unresolved addictions. Possession also causes physical or nervous exhaustion that doesn’t subside even after a long rest.

MISCONCEPTION 5: You have to be in the presence of the possessed to remove an attached ghost. Actually, it’s quite dangerous for anyone to be in the same physical space as a ghost because the ghost’s first reaction is to attack someone trying to displace them. It also makes the person performing the removal susceptible to being possessed themselves. Remote spirit removal is possible because everything that exists is energy and it is possible to communicate with ghosts on the astral plane. Ayn Carrillo-Gailey, Ed.M. improve your life and help you.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. When ghosts decide to remain among the living, they must use the energy of a living human by attaching to that person. Ghosts are a threat to a person’s physical and mental well-being and must be removed from a person for them to feel truly alive and happy.

MISCONCEPTION 2: Only Exorcists can help a possessed person. False. Priests are not the only people who can remove ghosts who have attached to the living, however, it is safe to do so only if you are trained. Pratnicka has a very different approach than a priest, referring to herself as a therapist for people and for ghosts, aka spirit entities. She believes they both need the same care, understanding and love. She helps people free themselves from ghosts, but she CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER March 2019 by Bernadette Evans

Overview

March heralds the coming of the spring equinox for those of us here in the Northern Hemisphere; while people south of the equator experience the fall equinox. Depending on where you live, you may still be experiencing some snow flurries, but hooray, you have gotten through most of the winter months and you’re anxious for the warmer weather to arrive. You may want to perform a ritual to celebrate the arrival of spring. Get some seedlings started so they will be ready to plant in the next month or two and let them take root. As excited as you are about the arrival of spring and feeling the urge to get going, you may experience some delays this month as its the first Mercury Retrograde of 2019. The other major news is that Uranus has finally finished retrograding back into Aries and it is fully into Taurus now. Uranus will be in Taurus for approximately the next seven years. My apologies for saying in the February Cosmic Daily Weather that Venus would be in Capricorn for seven weeks. I have no idea what transit I was experiencing when I wrote that! Venus, stays in a sign approximately 23-28 days, depending on what sign she’s in and longer if Retrograde. Now, that I’ve got that straight, (see embarrassed flush,) Venus zips through Aquarius, and then enters Pisces at the end of March. Venus in Aquarius enjoys relationships with individuals that others may view as eccentric. She enjoys socializing with a wide group of friends who are interested in different subjects and who like to think outside of the box. So, while Venus is in Aquarius, go mingle with others and keep an open mind, you could meet some interesting people and learn something new in the process. Venus in Pisces is a more romantic, idealistic Venus. She also has a sensitive, creative side and can be intuitive. While Venus is in Pisces you may feel more romantic, just be sure not to have unreasonable expectations that no one can live up to, as no one is perfect. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete her orbit through the twelve signs, approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is Void-of-Course, (VoC,) it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets until it leaves the sign it’s in. At these times, it can be difficult to get focused and accomplish tasks; you may want to relax, meditate or do something where your focus is directed inward. Don’t try to get a big project off the ground when the moon is void. If you want to find out more about the void of course moon, check out moontracks.com. The times below are listed in Central Standard Time until the clock changes on March 10 to Central Daylight Time.

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MARCH 2019

Friday, March 1 Today’s Moon-Saturn and Moon-Pluto conjunctions may bring some unpleasant emotions to the surface that you might not want to look at. You could feel depressed or irritated and want to regain some control. Bottling up your emotions up or ignoring them won’t be helpful nor will lashing out at someone else. Instead, investigate why you may be feeling this way or go work off that energy at the gym. Venus enters Aquarius at 10:45 a.m. Moon is in Capricorn.

Saturday, March 2 You want to connect with others today when the Moon conjuncts Venus. Seek out individuals who you can have interesting conversations with, or go someplace out of the ordinary where you will make new friends. Listen to your intuition and go from there. Moon VoC at 12:47 p.m. until 1:06 p.m. when it enters Aquarius.

Sunday, March 3 Is there something you’re digging your heels in about? With the Moon-Mars

square, you could be reacting stubbornly to a situation. Remember it is okay to re-evaluate and change course if you have to.

Monday, March 4 The Moon-Jupiter sextile gives you the opportunity to be generous and compassionate with your friends and loved ones. You are feeling magnanimous and supportive, and it feels great to be loving and connected with everyone.

Tuesday, March 5 Intuition is heightened while the Moon is in Pisces. Pay attention to your thoughts or any signs that you keep seeing or hearing, it’s the Universe trying to get your attention. Mercury Rx at 12:19 p.m. Moon VoC at 2:05 a.m. until 2:11 a.m. when it enters Pisces.

Wednesday, March 6 There is a dreamy quality to the day with the New Moon in Pisces. Take advantage of this energy to create what you want, or at the very least, dream about what you want, so you’ll be able to plant the seeds for your vision at a later date. Uranus enters Taurus at 2:26 a.m. New Moon at 10:04 a.m.

Thursday, March 7 When the Moon enters Aries, you feel excited about going after what you desire. You feel confident and energized, ready to go after what you want and take on the world. Moon VoC at 1:08 p.m. until 2:27 p.m. when it enters Aries.

Friday, March 8 The Moon-Venus sextile is a great time to get together with friends and socialize. You may be feeling adventurous and want to try something new…speed dating, networking or a new meetup, you have lots of options available to you.

Saturday, March 9 You may be feeling like you’re walking into situations blind and not sure where to step or what move to make.

With the void of course moon, don’t make any big decisions today that you might regret tomorrow, if you really feel you need to get something done today, complete a project that you’ve already been working on. Moon VoC at 11:14 a.m. and void the rest of the day.

the Moon moves into Cancer, you can move forward slowly, which will help you breathe easier. If you can’t wait till then, ask someone whose opinion you trust what their thoughts are. Moon VoC at 7:30 a.m. until 4:49 p.m. when it enters Cancer.

Sunday, March 10

Friday, March 15

The gears are starting to move, slowly but surely when the Moon enters Taurus. When Mars sextiles Neptune you go through the motions in slow motion. You’ve got an image of what you want, but it could evaporate before your eyes. Before that happens, get it down on paper so you don’t lose the idea. Moon enters Taurus at 2:10 am.

The energy of the Mercury-Jupiter square, along with the Cancer moon, may have you feeling sensitive and not feeling heard. There could be some misunderstandings, so make sure you’re communicating clearly because I know you have big plans.

Monday, March 11

You may want to stay at home and pamper yourself while the Moon is in Cancer. What would feel nurturing to you? By the evening, you may be ready to venture out with friends when the Moon enters Leo. Moon VoC at 1:03 p.m. until 7:57 p.m. when it enters Leo.

Beauty, harmony and finances may all be on the table today as the Moon conjuncts Mars. Your perseverance when pursuing one of these goals or something else and seeing it through to the end can produce results.

Tuesday, March 12 The Moon in Gemini is about emotional intellect. Imagination is a different form of intelligence that you may have discounted in the past, don’t. Open that door and notice what gems are inside. You’re able to create new worlds with words, music and art or whatever medium you choose, you’re the creator. Moon VoC at 4:31 a.m. until 10:48 a.m. when it enters Gemini.

Wednesday, March 13 The Sun-Pluto sextile gives you the opportunity to look at your ideals and decide if you want to change the status quo. Is it time to discard or get rid of old beliefs and traditions that don’t fit anymore? Transforming old beliefs ultimately benefits the collective.

Thursday, March 14 You may be feeling torn as to what action you should take; the Moon is void in Gemini for a good part of the day, so try and avoid any major decisions while its void if you can. Once

Saturday, March 16

Sunday, March 17 Happy St. Patrick’s Day! You might spontaneously burst into song at the pub if you’re out drinking green beer! Today is about being playful and generous, creative (hence the bursting into song) and enthusiastic with the Moon in Leo.

Monday, March 18 You may feel the need to win at any cost with this morning’s Moon-Mars square and Moon-Pluto quincunx. There is the possibility of dramatic encounters and selfish behaviors. Feelings may run hot and adjustments may have to be made. Take a step back and breathe. Moon VoC at 10:19 a.m. until 8:41p.m. when it enters Virgo.

Tuesday, March 19 The Moon in Virgo helps you fine-tune your work, your home, your exercise routine, your diet…you get the picture. Putting things in order gives you the space to unwind and relax at the end of the day. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

Thursday, March 21 Start your engines…Venus is squaring Mars, which could lead to some intense, passionate encounters. Some of you could feel that push/pull of being attracted to someone even when you know it may not end well. If you’re single, be forewarned, it could be just that, an attraction and nothing more. If you are in a healthy relationship, you may feel some bumps today, but its nothing you can’t handle.

Friday, March 22 The Moon in Libra is all about peace and harmony and getting along in

your relationships, sometimes at all costs. When you’re having harmonious relationships, it feels like smooth sailing, and you feel happy with life and centered. Just be wary, if you’re compromising too much in your relationships, and find the balance. Moon VoC at 1:10 pm until 9:16 pm when it enters Scorpio.

Saturday, March 23 Intense feelings may arise with the Moon in Scorpio today. Are you isolating yourself? Reach out and call a friend, someone you can trust who has your back and go for a coffee. You don’t have to be alone or do it all by yourself.

Sunday, March 24 There is a stillness today. Stop and listen to it. You could discover new insights. Tune into the subtle energies and play with them; you never know where it might lead. You could suddenly be immersed in a new project, it may be something artistic or you could find yourself exploring a new philosophy. Whatever it is, enjoy. Moon Vo at 9:24 p.m.

Monday, March 25 What do you believe in? The Sagittarius Moon can help pique your curiosity, your enthusiasm about your beliefs and your zest for life. Tuesday, March 26 You may be feeling confused or lost when the Moon squares Mercury, followed by the Moon-Neptune square. Take your time before deciding and committing to the path you want to go down. Venus enters Pisces at 2:43 p.m. Moon VoC at 9:37 p..m.

Wednesday, March 27 With the Venus-Uranus sextile, you

want a pause from your routine. Break free from your usual day/night and go out, surround yourself with stimulating friends whose ideas are exciting and fascinating. You’ll be glad you did. Moon enters Capricorn at 9:07 a.m.

Thursday, March 28 You may just feel like you need a break, you know there are things you could do but you don’t have the energy to do them, with the Moon-Sun square. That’s okay, tomorrow is another day, for now, be kind to yourself and relax. Mercury goes Direct at 8:59 a.m.

Friday, March 29 Emotions can run the gamut today with the Moon-Pluto conjunction. If you find yourself brooding over something that didn’t turn out the way you wanted or expected, or something someone said, examine the possible reasons it didn’t work out. Instead of being sullen, take actions that will propel you forward at the next opportunity. Moon VoC at 7:05 p.m. until 8:46 p.m. when it enters Aquarius.

Saturday, March 30 You find connection by socializing with different groups and organizations when the Moon’s in Aquarius. Sharing ideas, possibly even teaching what you know to others will feel very satisfying.

Sunday, March 31 Communicating your ideas, explaining how you came up with your ideas, and of course, doing something about them is the purpose of Mars being in Gemini. There is a danger of taking off in too many directions and then being too exhausted to complete something. Mars enters the sign of Gemini at 1:12 a.m. Moon goes VoC at 10:02 p.m. Bernadette Evans is a counseling astrologer, hypnotherapist, Registered Professional Counsellor and writer. LA PRIMAVERA ESTÁ AQUÍ! Saffron and Spring Onions by Janae Jean After the long winter, spring returns on March 20. Fresh and locally-sourced fruits and vegetables will soon be returning to our markets. Spring (or green) onions are some of the earliest fresh spring produce. In fact, spring onion season is celebrated in Spain. From January until April, there are calçotada festivals in various Spanish towns. These festivities celebrate the Spanish calçot, a type scallion or spring onion. Since calçots are a Catalan specialty, we use spring onions which are in season in North America. Spring onions are often overlooked as as a main ingredient and seen as a garnish, yet they are a worthy ingredient to include in a well-balanced diet. They are low in calories (about five calories per medium onion) and offer health benefits, including shrinking fat cells and enhancing immunity. Both of this month’s recipes feature spring onions.

One of the key flavors of Spanish cuisine is saffron. Saffron is known for being the most expensive spice in the world. It is harvested by hand from the crocus sativus flower. It has been used since ancient times to improve mood, increase libido and aid in weight loss. It is a potent antioxidant and reduces inflammation. Paella is a popular Spanish dish that may include a wide range of ingredients from vegetables to seafood to meat. The original recipe for Paella Valenciana dates to the early 1800s. It calls for snails and rabbit along with saffron scented rice. Paella is traditionally prepared in a paella pan, which prevents the rice from becoming wet. This recipe does not require a paella pan.
