PUBLISHER’S LETTER

ON THE ROAD T

he September issue of Conscious Community Magazine is here! It is our 39th anniversary issue. We are honored to have inspired millions of people, and it is our goal to keep going and to inspire billions of people around the globe to more mindful, fulfilled and conscious way of living. To kick-off this 39th anniversary issue, I would like to share with you some of the history of Conscious Community Magazine, formerly The Monthly Aspectarian. Astrologer, Guy Spiro, founded this magazine in 1979. His vision and hard-work lead him to create a metaphysical magazine when New Age thinking was just beginning to expand to a wider audience. Guy Spiro passed away in 2011 after 32 years of running The Monthly Aspectarian. In 2012, Walter Perschke, my predecessor, became the new publisher of The Monthly Aspectarian. In June 2014, he changed the name of the magazine to Conscious Community Magazine. His monthly meditations at Spiritual Learning Center, as well as his classes, “Living your Dream” and “Ancient Wisdom Revealed,” transformed many people’s lives. He passed away in 2016 and left Conscious Community Magazine to me in his will. I was a Circulation Manager at Conscious Community Magazine since 2012 until 2016.

KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER

This September issue is about looking inside you—where all the magic of this world happens. I began my own search for happiness when I was 24 years old in 2006. I was studying accounting, and I felt that I was missing something in my life; I felt disconnected. I knew inside me that there is more to my life, and I asked God to reveal to me what it was. I knew that I am here to be happy and enjoy life, and I knew that I needed to find it. A few weeks after I prayed to find happiness, I found Yoga Chicago magazine. There was a schedule for the Spiritual Learning Center inside, and there was a movie event there, Ambition to Meaning: Finding your Life’s Purpose by Wayne Dyer. Since that day, I have not stopped smiling! I went to that event for a movie, and it was there I met Walter Perschke, the owner of the Spiritual Learning Center. We connected instantly, and I began to work for him. Fast-forward to the year 2012, and the time was ripe for Walter to expand his spiritually-based entrepreneurial horizons. The Monthly Aspectarian magazine was for sale. I vividly remember the day he purchased it like it was yesterday. He was so thrilled to be overseeing the oldest spiritual and metaphysical magazine in the United States. At that time, my life was pretty comfortable. I was working at the Spiritual Learning Center and studying business management (I had changed majors) in college. That all changed the day I asked him who would manage the magazine. Much to my shock, his response was “YOU!” I said, “Yes.” As many of you know, Walter Perschke passed on in May 2016, and he left me the magazine (and this community) in his will. He knew that I am very passionate about this magazine and deeply care about this community and will take it to the next level of consciousness. This is just one of many stories from the history of Conscious Community Magazine, formerly The Monthly Aspectarian. I felt prompted to share this story to assure you that the true meaning of your life can appear to you at any moment. There are no coincidences in life. You are on a spiritual journey in a human body, and every experience you have brings you closer to who you are and closer to finding the true meaning of your life. Lastly, I want to thank all of our advertisers, subscribers, readers, writers and colleagues, who support this magazine and make up this community of like-minded people that share together and grow together. Keep elevating your consciousness. Enjoy your journey and our 39th anniversary issue! The Best,

Kasia Szumal

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

Q: My best friend and I got into a huge argument while texting about something mundane. Now she’s not talking to me, which makes me confused and sad because I didn’t say anything wrong. What should I do? — Sore Thumbs A: Dear Sore Thumbs, Unfortunately, it’s my understanding that this scenario happens in epidemic proportions. Texting is a convenient way to communicate short specific things like saying that you’re on your way or specifying when and where you’re going to meet. At the same time, texting can rapidly turn ugly if you’re communicating on a sensitive topic, especially if you’re texting with someone whom you don’t trust or have had personal issues with in the past. Text messages eliminate a myriad of cues that the conversation is starting to go awry, even when using emojis. I’d encourage you to reach out in a personal way by calling your friend to clear things up. While she may not answer, you can leave a sincere voicemail telling her how much you miss her with an invitation to meet for coffee so you can unravel what seems to be accidentally bound up here. When there’s been a disagreement, the highest form of communication is face to face so we can see each other’s eyes, read body language, hear vocal tone and inflection, and more

immediately respond to what’s being said, even if that’s just with gentle eyes or a touch. Phone calls are second best, so we can hear each other’s voices which tell us a lot. When you call, speak softly from your heart so she can tell that you’re sincere about bridging this divide to bring understanding back into this special friendship. If she’s still not receptive and this mishap has occurred recently, I’d allow some time and space for each of you to cool off to ponder what happened and where you go from here. A handwritten note sent snail mail is also a nice gesture. Hopefully, your friendship is solid enough to be open to working things out and not holding grudges. Collectively, we would be best served to be more mindful of what we choose to engage in when texting, since the interpretation of our message is left to the receiver on the other end. It’s really easy to read something between the lines that isn’t actually there. Depending on who we’re communicating with, most of us have a subconscious tendency to read emails and texts with a certain “tone” in our head, whether we realize it or not. I have younger friends who I know read some of my messages with the “voice” of a mother, especially if I’m sharing counsel or making a difficult observation which can sometimes twist the feel of what I’m actually saying and

how I’m saying it. Therefore, I often check in to try to ensure that what I’m meaning is actually being properly received in writing. If we’re communicating with a co-worker or a family member with whom we don’t see eye to eye or with whom we’ve had a difficult relationship, we have a tendency to read their words through the “tone” of that history even though it may not have been sent with that intention at all. I call these “trigger lenses,” for we often end up getting triggered because we view these people through a certain lens that may be tinted or skewed from past hurts or misunderstandings. Therefore, immediately ending the texting and picking up the phone as soon as the texts start generating hard feelings would be best to keep relationships intact. This can potentially save lots of time and heartache. Q: My friend cancels most of the plans we make and often at the very last minute. This aggravates me. What can I do? — Feeling Undervalued A: Dear Feeling Undervalued, This may not be personal to you, but may just be a blind spot that she doesn’t fully realize. I’d approach her when you’re in a neutral place and can talk about it without emotional charge. Speak from an “I feel…” place instead of from a “You…” place so you can convey why it’s an issue for you. Explain what it feels like, and ask why it seems to happen so consistently. You might learn a little more about her process and can speak your future needs into the space if you continue to make plans with her. If she doesn’t stop, you may just need to create a boundary by not making any more plans with her because she’s unreliable. Alecia Rice integrates higher concepts with wisdom to bring forth balance, perspective and clarity. She’s a personal advisor, speaker and gatherer of women. For perspective on life issues, you’re invited to text questions and comments to 681-321-1109. Discussions continue at @Ask Alecia on Facebook. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

THE INNER-CHILD KNOWS Interview with Andrew Newman by Janae Jean and Spencer Schluter For this conversation, we had the pleasure to speak with therapist, healer, speaker, life coach and author, Andrew Newman. Andrew has published a dozen books as part of The Conscious Bedtime Story Club, with two more coming soon. He graduated from the Barbara Brennan School of Healing as a Non-Dual Kabbalistic healer and has been involved in men’s work through the Mankind Project since 2006. He has published over 2,500 poems through PoemCatcher, acted as a volunteer coordinator for Habitat for Humanity in South Africa, directed Edinburgh’s Festival of Spirituality and Peace, and spoken at engagements around the world. The Conscious Bedtime Story Club is intended to bring parents and children into deeper connection with one another. The following is only a small part of our 30-minute conversation with Andrew. We spoke to him more about teaching 12

conscious living to children, the reception of mindfulness in schools and the healing power of creativity. To hear the entire interview and hear previous podcasts, go to www. ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com. Don’t forget to subscribe, like, review and share the Conscious Community Podcast on your preferred podcatcher app. Janae: What brought you to write stories for bedtime? Andrew: Those last 20 minutes of the day are super precious. The stories started coming in a way by themselves. I was simply following my own journaling practice and my own creativity. A Little Light was the very first story that I wrote, and it was nothing more than a little poem that needed some pictures. Because I see the world through images in my mind, I thought that I could show you my world if I put into a form like this. I could show you things that I have learned, seen, journeyed or crept over and recovered from. So that was book one. Then all of a sudden, I had four! I was like “What am I doing here? Who are these books for? Why do I keep writing books?” That’s when I held them up against my

own therapeutic training and my work as a healer. I could see that there were some narratives coming through me through these stories that were healing, useful and missing in the world, and that all of the grownups are dealing with problems that started before they were six years old. So, that’s how I got into this work in this format with kids. Spencer: Even though they are written as children’s books, they lay out these philosophical concepts. Whether you are talking about prayer, meditation, breathing, the healing power of a hug, or any of the other ideas that you cover in your books, these concepts are really not that complicated. Whether you are an adult or a child, I don’t think you need a huge, thick book to explain these things. They are simple concepts. AN: These are fairly common human dilemmas that we face at different times. The Fish Who Searched for Water, he is out looking for love. We all go looking for love at some point; we all lose sight of the fact that love is right in front of us. The Hug Who Got Stuck, he’s coming out of the hug factory, but his heart gets caught in the web of sticky thoughts—his negative self-beliefs like “No one loves me. There’s something wrong with me.” When our heads are running those loops, we back away from the world and the flow of love gets blocked. I’d like these things [philosophical concepts] to be accessible; I’d like them to be spoken about. They certainly were not spoken about in my childhood. I wasn’t given any narrative on how to be in the world. The narrative I got was about preparing me for what I was going to do. At a very young age, I was worried

about choosing my subjects in school right, so I’d get into the right college. We’re in trouble, if we haven’t embedded values and morals at that point. Those foundations get formed very strongly by the age of eight years old. SS: I feel that someone who was looking for answers the would be much better off reading your children’s books than they would be reading a 600-page self-help book. JJ: Is that one of the things you were trying to do with these books? Were you also trying to relate to the parents as well? As the parents see their kid learning these things then they can re-remember. The parents start to connect to their inner-child as well as help their child with the child’s development. AN: I don’t know that I set out for that to be a goal, but I do see it happening. It’s interesting because it’s my work, but it’s also a spiritual body of work that is coming through me. I don’t yet fully understand its impact, but I’m learning and I’m seeing that impact as I put things out in the world. I see it as a resource for parents and teachers to communicate some of their internal world. They fall back into the innocence of their own childhood and that remembrance. That’s exactly how I experienced my own healing journey, I un-learned and I found myself back where I started—in my innocence. The starting words on your [Conscious Community’s] mission statement are “To unify.” This is right. We want to create a unified human experience. Regardless of the different languages, we’re pointing towards the same thing. This state of Oneness. Whether we talk about it as “Oneness,” “Reality” or “God,” those are different languages and pathways. But, what we’re pointing to ultimately, for me, is the same—the same unified field of consciousness out of which we arise and that expresses through us. [ALL ABOUT TOWN]

METAPHYSICALLY FIT FEST 2018 Yorkville, IL - July 21, 2018 by Theresa Puskar “Keep close to Nature’s heart…and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.” — John Muir Mother Earth seemed to conspire with Tairi Grace, founder of the Metaphysically Fit Fest in Yorkville. Despite the crazy heat and abundance of rain prior to Saturday’s outdoor festival, the skies Theresa Puskar & Tairi Grace cleared and sunshine filled the Yorkville skies for this fun-filled event. Attendees were graced with green grass, a rolling river and a warm breeze throughout the day. Tairi greeted me at the entrance of the festival. Her warmth and sense of joy were a perfect match to Mother Nature’s picturesque surroundings. She graciously offered to buy me a veggie 14

smoothie as I conducted our interview. Of course, doing more juicing has been on my mind as of late. I paid over $300 for a juicer about two years ago, and I’ve only used it once. I ask myself, “Hmmm, do I order the delicious looking apple lemonade ice, or do I choose the super veggie smoothie, made with kale, carrots and all kinds of other ‘better for me’ fruits and veggies?” The veggie smoothie won out, and while I doubt that it tasted as delectable as the frozen lemonade, I knew that I was ingesting good foods and vowed to start using that juicer. As I chugged down my smoothie, Tairi informed me that this was the festival’s fifth year. She shared that it has grown tenfold, from a mere four vendors during its first year to over 40. Tairi’s commitment to growing a conscious community in the Yorkville area does not stop at the festival. She shared that her passion was bringing people together, and she does just that in a myriad of ways. She is the owner of the Sense of Samadhi Yoga Studio, listed as one of the top 10 studios in Illinois. She also created the Grace Holistic Center for Education (GHCFE), a Pre-K through 12th Grade school, that fosters the education of the heart, mind and soul. Along with conventional curriculum, classes are also offered in diverse areas such as Yoga, Mindfulness, Pet Therapy and Aquaponics. They have

an Aquaponics system in their pet room, where fish feed their plants and students are taught the value of contribution, compassion and responsibility. “In all things of nature, there is something of the marvelous.” — Aristotle

Backtracking for a moment, prior to heading out to the event, I spent a couple of hours working in my garden. When I was a child, while I loved nature, I had no interest nor appreciation for plants and the growth process. Fast forward 50 years and I find myself in awe. Watering the seeds, I so carelessly planted in the early summer, I am shocked at the sudden appearance of five huge cucumbers that had been hidden under massive leaves. Three enormous bowling ball-sized veggies appeared out of nowhere. “What? Squash? But, I didn’t plant any squash. Awesome, but how?” Tending to my lawn, I watch as it becomes overgrown with some kind of weed that has a shallow root and vines that quickly expand to cover a vast area, and eventually strangle the underlying grass. As I yank weeds out from the miniscule cement cracks on my driveway, I note how nature is bound and determined to survive and grow. I believe that that too is our innate nature as well—to expand and grow in our consciousness. “Nature’s beings live in the moment. They need nothing, and they ask for nothing. They know that they are where they need to be— we too are where we need to be.” — Kasia Szumal, Publisher of Conscious Community Magazine

After arriving at the festival, I headed to the Conscious Community Magazine table to say a quick “hello” to our dear publisher, Kasia. As we spoke about my angst in the marketing of my solo show to a New York audience, she reminded me of the fact that nature knows and trusts, and that we should too. Ah, those two words that echo through my mind, “surrender” and “trust”. While I believe I need to, it is not always easy to do so. Just across from the magazine’s booth was a booth sponsored by the local Fruitful Yield shop. If you are not familiar with Fruitful Yield, they are a familyowned business that originated in 1968. Their core values are The Fruitful Yield Team healthy products, honest prices and five-star customer service. While I’ve seen retailers do some impressive promoting, I was overwhelmed with their generosity and outstanding customer care. They gave away so many free products; full bags of nuts, snacks, toiletries and other goodies; I wished I had a couple of extra grocery bags handy for all of their generosity. “I received some powerful messages while reading cards from the Journey of the Fool!” — Theresa Puskar Of course, like every event I visit, synchronicity abounds and pertinent messages always surface. I then headed over to the lawn area by the river, where some of

the workshops were held. Dawn Aulet held a 30-minute tarot reading and discussion on The Journey of the Fool. She had us each pull four cards from the deck. My first was the Lovers VI card. I responded by throwing the card back in the deck, saying, “Yikes, not yet!” Then she explained that there was a dual meaning – that I need to love and honor myself fully, along with being open to a partner in my life. In retrospect, speaking of fools, I know that my gesture was a foolish one, as it is high time I fully open to experiencing both. Later, I pulled the Wheel of Fortune X and Sun XIX cards. In her reflection of my cards and my interpretation of them, Dawn informed me that she got a message that performing my show and promoting were both creative acts, Dawn Aulet & Theresa Puskar and that I was already successfully fulfilling both requirements. I experienced a “lightbulb” moment when she referenced the promotional work I was doing as a “creative endeavor.” Shifting the paradigm of promotion from being something I dread (but have to do) to being a creative activity was a potent way to reframe it. I was grateful to her and her powerful message. “Adopt the pace of nature; her secret is patience.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

When I reflect back on the journey I have taken with my show and promoting it, I have learned so much. I have built my own websites, improved on my video producing and editing skills, and learned a great deal about marketing. So, I ask you, are there tasks you do that you perceive as being mundane and uncreative? Are you impatient with yourself and avoid taking credit for what you have accomplished? Perhaps it is time you reframe your perception as I re-evaluate mine. Perhaps it’s time to acknowledge yourself for how far you have come and see all that you do as part of your creative process. Without the rain, there would be no rainbows. Without the contrast of muddy grey winter days, there would not be the appreciation of spring’s burst of colorful foliage. THE LAW OF INSIDE-OUT by Jakeb Brock

16

Jesus once told his disciples, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world,” (John 16:33) For students of spiritual truth there are two important points to consider about Jesus’ choice of words. The first is what he meant by the word trouble, and the second is what he meant by the word overcome.

ally they view their problems as outside forces of inertia that must be fought against and defeated. That is why most people also have what they consider to be enemies, that is, people causing them resistance and pain. Thus, their lives are not only plagued with problems, but they are also given over to hostility and bellicosity.

Most people living in today’s world have no lack of problems or troubles. Not only are the age-old difficulties of getting along with others, fending off disease and earning our daily bread still highly problematic, but in our modern world we also have new unforeseen pressures, such as the complications that arise when becoming acclimated to advanced technologies. For most people, however, their approach to dealing with these difficulties does not reflect any deep spiritual insight or desire for inward amendment. Rather, instinctu-

This them-and-us mindset is not only simplistic; it is also emotionally reactionary. It evokes from us a veritable plethora of negative emotionalism—fear, hatred, anger, resentment and criticism, to name a few. We see ourselves as right and our enemies as wrong, and we justify our judgements through the activating of a strong emotional response. This habitual reactionary response may be comfortable for us, but the fact is that it simply does not work. Not only does it turn our lives into a battleground; it makes us miserable in the process. This

can be readily ascertained by observing ourselves when we succeed in banishing a problematic situation. Instead of finally making things right in our life, all we end up doing is opening the door to other problems. We can never find peace or happiness because our battles never cease. This is what the Bible means when it says: “There is no rest for the wicked.” (Isaiah 48:22) There is really only one way to get off this treadmill of blame and emotional reactionism. We must cease from our them-and-us battle stance and gain the spiritual perspective that our problems never actually have their source outside of us, but are rather the demonstration of our own state of consciousness. This is the path of full responsibility, which means that ultimately it is the path of peaceful coexistence with our fellow man and the establishing of a virtually problem-free life.

When Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble,” he was speaking of a world in which taking full individual responsibility is very rare. Of course, we will have trouble in such a world. The way to overcome, the way he overcame, is not to fight and not to blame someone or something outside of ourselves. Such a stance only perpetuates. The way to overcome is to change our own state of consciousness. There is a state of consciousness that is so benign that, once attained, one no longer sees evil. This state is not the stuff of mental delusions. It is an actual change in our reality view, in which we are so caught up to heaven within ourselves that evil cannot touch us. As the Bible says, “You will look for your enemies and not be able to find them” (Isaiah 41:12.) This is not accomplished by fighting and winning. It is done by changing our own state of consciousness. This is not to imply that changing one’s state of consciousness is an easy or quick fix. On the contrary, it is both difficult, and in most cases, drawn out over a long duration of time, but there is a starting point that can be enacted this very moment. That starting point is the decision to cease from our blame game, turn inward and be willing to accept the responsibility for our life’s discords, as issuing forth from our own state of consciousness. This then will begin the journey of consciousness evolution that Jesus called the return to the Father’s house. (Luke 15:18) To develop our individual consciousness along these lines will not necessarily impact the collective chemistry of our world, at least not immediately. But we will soon begin to see improvements in our own lives that are irrefutable. For the true creative law of our universe operates from the inside outward. In other words, it is a scientific certainty that once our inner realm is full of light and swept clean, our outer world will follow suit. Discord and trouble will give way to harmony and peace. This was how Jesus overcame the world. Obviously, he did not seek to amend the outer reality first. This would

have necessitated fighting against the Roman Empire. Even if he would have succeeded at such an undertaking, it would not have been lasting. Rather, it would only have perpetuated our world’s them-and-us syndrome. Jesus understood the universal law that it is consciousness that creates conditions, not the other way around. Therefore, he left us a teaching aimed at inward amendment only. This has perplexed people down through the age and given Jesus’ critics abundant fuel for skepticism. But his approach, though slow to bear fruit, has proven to be prophetically efficacious. Only now is it becoming apparent that Jesus’ way of overcoming the world is the only way that is enduring. It has transformed the individual lives of a veritable multitude over the course of the past 2,000 years. Now, at long last, the fruits of this age-long individual demonstration are beginning to impact the collective whole. Thus, Jesus actually did overcome the world, not just for himself and his followers but

for every man, woman and child that will ever be born on this planet. Of course, there have been and will always be those who cling to their them-and-us mentality. But the proof is neither delusional nor emotionally reactive. It is scientific and based strictly on universal law. Inside-out is not a philosophy or novel approach. It is pure time-tested science. As Jesus once said, “Nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him unclean. What comes out of a man is what makes him unclean” (Mark 7:18, 20.) When all the people living in our world give credence to this universal law we will surely witness the dawning of the Age of Enlightenment. Jakeb Brock has been a serious student of spiritual-religious truth teachings for over 40 years. His new book, The New Consciousness: What Our World Needs Most, is the result of this journey, offering a clear-eyed approach to consciousness thought for any true seeker.

[FROM THE HEART]

WHERE HEALING LIVES by Alan Cohen

18

My friend Mark has been a physician for over 40 years. Recently he told me a story that helped me understand what real healing is. While Mark was vacationing in Maui, his nephew, a younger man vacationing in Honolulu, had a heart attack. Upon learning this, Mark flew to Honolulu and sat with the nephew’s distraught wife in the Intensive Care Unit for 24 hours, until her husband had stabilized. Mark went not in his capacity as a doctor, but as a friend.

and a healer. A doctor treats symptoms. A healer treats the soul. Mark’s commitment to the well-being of his nephew and his wife went far beyond fixing the man’s body. His intention was to soothe their souls.

As Mark recounted this story, I recognized the distinction between a doctor

lar show for many years. In addition to playing hit songs, he daily reads an inspirational message on the air. He is known and loved in his community. Recently Don went through a severe bout with depression. One day he revealed to his radio listeners that he was depressed and having a tough time. A few days later Don received a letter from a psychiatrist who is the director of a psychiatric hospital. She told Don, “Thank you for courageously sharing about your current emotional challenge. I know this can be a very

difficult process to go through. I am certain that you helped many of your listeners who are dealing with the same experience, giving them permission to authentically express their feelings, the first step to healing. I have enjoyed your show for many years, especially the inspirational quotes you share. I hope you will continue to progress and feel better.” When Don sent me a copy of her letter, I was touched. This person, obviously busy in a position of high importance, did not have to take the time and caring to send Don such a supportive letter. But she did. I told Don, “This woman is a real healer.” Regardless of your profession, the vision you hold of your clients makes all the difference in how successful you will be with them, and the amount of personal satisfaction you receive from your work. If you see customers as bodies or dollars only, you will operate at a very shallow level of existence. You can get results and make money, but in your quiet moments your soul will ache and you will wonder what you are doing with your life. If, on the other hand, you recognize that your customers are so much more than their bodies or what they can pay you, you have the golden key to success. Within the body lives a spiritual being who yearns to be acknowledged and supported. Pay attention to that person’s inner self, and you will sleep well at night, make a contribution to the world, and your material needs will be met.

yet?” “No, I haven’t.” “Then would you please recite it for me?” The poet did so. “How do you feel now?” the doctor asked. “Much better,” replied the poet. All healing is not as simple as reciting one’s latest poem, but the dynamic of recognizing and honoring the needs of a client’s soul is a much greater element of healing than most doctors recognize. What’s happening in our body is intrinsically linked to what’s happening in our mind. Richard Bach said, “Your body is your thoughts in a form you can see.” To really be healed, we cannot simply address the symptoms. We must address the source of disease, which always has something to do with a blockage or imbalance of our life force, and denying our spiritual expression. Restoring that expression leads to the restoration of physical health.

Doctors are instruments of God. The doctors I remember most are those who have touched my soul. We all have the capacity to heal each other and ourselves at the deepest level, and we must. Let us meet where we really live. Alan Cohen is the author of many popular inspirational books, including the forthcoming The Tao Made Easy: Timeless Wisdom to Navigate a

Doctors are busy and have many pressures and demands. Most doctors really want to help their patients, and they do. They hear about people’s problems all day long, which can be daunting and cause a physician to become impersonal. Yet the creation and maintenance of relationships, however brief, is the building block of real satisfaction. A Sufi story tells of a poet who went to a doctor and complained of all kinds of physical symptoms. “I don’t sleep well, I get headaches, I have this rash,” and on and on. The doctor asked the poet, “Have you recited your latest poem CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

HOW TO COMBAT PERFECTIONISM and Lower Risk of Anxiety, Depression and Eating Disorders by Susanna Mittermaier An alarming new study shows perfectionism is on the rise, a condition linked to depression, anxiety, eating disorders, early morbidity and even suicide. Broadly defined, perfectionism is a combination of excessively high personal standards and overly critical self-evaluations. Perfectionism is often fueled by cultural expectations and conditioning, involves a harsh inner critic, ruins people’s capacity to feel joy and needs to be addressed. I grew up in a culture where it was very important to be as perfect as possible, which meant living in the constant fear of judgement and the need to filter everything through the question: “is this perfect enough?” We must put an end to this for ourselves and the generations to come. Here are some steps out of self-judgement and perfectionist tendencies. I invite you to let go of the harsh internal critical voice and make way for your own. 1. Stop judging you. Every judgement defines you and stops positive energy and opportunities from flowing into your world. Every time you judge yourself negatively or harshly it’s like putting the brakes on whatever you’re trying to create in your life. 2. Be willing to let go. Perfectionists can hold onto ideas, projects and contributions in fear of the judgement that will come if they share them before they are 100 percent perfect. Be willing to let these ideas, projects and conversation pieces fly out into the world, whether they’re perfect or not. 3. Don’t look for others’ approval. If you feel excited about saying, creating or contributing something in your home, workplace or social circles, don’t wait for approval from others (or even your inner critic). Other people’s points of view are not relevant.

FOLLOW US!

3. Don’t wait. Create. Stop waiting for conditions to be perfect to start creating the experiences you actually want in your life. Give yourself permission to stop worrying about the outcomes (whether things will be perfect or what others will think) and start creating today. Creation starts with one choice. Ask yourself what the first, easy step you could take might be. 4. Your past does not determine who you are in the present or future. Perfectionists have usually judged themselves harshly. They may have never measured up to the expectations of others or that of their own inner critic, which can leave many feeling like a failure. Don’t buy into the story of your past. Instead, start creating your future. 5. Get to know your imperfections. Make a list of your top three imperfections. Then ask how can you can use each of them to your advantage? For example, if you think you are shy and you believe that is a weakness, ask yourself what the power of shyness is? Shy people are usually great listeners, which can be a great advantage in many work and social settings. 6. Learn to enjoy being imperfect. Perfection is about measuring yourself against the standards of society and others. See your individuality as a resource rather than a liability. Enjoy your imperfection and recognize your difference as a treasure box of gifts, then use them to create your life, projects and relationships in a way that is unique to you. Perfectionism stops people from being able to express themselves in the world. Giving up the need to be perfect and allowing your right voice to come through into the world is so liberating for people. I love it when people realize they can do things they’ve been stopping themselves from doing, especially when those things have the capacity to make them happy. WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN TO BE A YOGI? by Raquel Jex Forsgren, Yoga Therapist, C-IAYT “Are you one of those yogis?” A question that I frequently hear after I tell someone what I do for a living. I can hear in the tone that it’s a bit of a loaded question. I admit that it used to ruffle my feathers. I’d think a few things: What is that supposed to mean? No, I’m not one of those yogis! Until now. I was inspired to write about this from a conversation with a dear soul, Kristy, who is a year into her yoga journey. We were talking about the small, yet transformational changes that happen along the way without realizing it, until one day you notice you are reacting differently, sleeping better and have less anxiety. You begin to notice how feelings and emotions arise, like joy, peace and contentment, each coming from within. She said, “It feels surreal and almost indescribable.” I said, “My dear, this is called being awake and feeling bits of enlightenment.”

WHY IS YOGA A PATH TO ENLIGHTENMENT OR BEING AWAKE? First, let’s just address the word, enlightenment. This has traditionally been a word reserved to describe monks, yogis that sit on mountain tops or those living on an ashram. It’s a word that some would argue doesn’t exist and to others, something they strive for all their lives. Which, if you are reading Conscious Community Magazine, you probably fall into the latter. Enlightenment is defined as education or awareness that brings about change. To those who more spiritually attuned, there are complex and deeper meanings, such as in Theravada Buddhism. It is associated with the perfection of insight into the Four Noble Truths, which end dukkha (suffering, stress, dissatisfaction.) The person who has perfected this insight and abandoned all defilements is one who is liberated and considered awake. “Seek not to learn the sutras, instead seek to learn who is the one who studies the scripture.” — Nischala Joy Devi

HOW DOES YOGA HELP US FIND MOMENTS OF ENLIGHTENMENT OR BECOME AWAKE? To PRACTICE Yoga is to live a life following the Eight Limbs of Yoga as described by Patanjali. Yoga is so much more than practicing poses or meditating. It’s a way of life. Yogis follow the Yamas or restraints. These ethical principles underpin the foundation that Yoga is built on. They guide us to practice non-harming, truthfulness, non-stealing, sexual moderation and non-grasping.

Yogis practice the Niyamas or observances. There are practical ways of living, that a Yogi will cultivate such as purity, contentment, discipline, self-study and devotion. Yogis do Asanas anywhere and anytime. Yoga is about more than practicing Asanas to uplifting or relaxing music in a yoga class. Asanas help prepare the body and mind for meditation and teaches us how to connect to and listen to what it is telling us, particularly about emotions that arise during a pose. Yogis work to master Pranayama. Controlling the breath controls our mind, and ultimately, can help us reduce our own suffering. Yogis cultivate a mastery over their own breathing by practicing a variety of breathing techniques. Yogis aim to integrate Pranayama or sensory withdrawal. Have you ever turned your phone off for an entire evening or not looked at social media for an afternoon? Or, have you ever noticed how you feel when you have practiced yoga Asanas, gone for a run or just woken up in the morning without having all the electronics on? This is sensory withdrawal. It’s reducing the stimulation from the outside world that we are constantly receiving so that we can tune inward to hear ourselves. Yogis are open to learning and loving meditation. They’ve found it is an essential pathway to peeling back layers to what is beneath our feelings and changes our reactions and responses to life. Meditation can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s not always about sitting in a cross-legged position, void of thought. Meditation is about going inward, allowing whatever your thoughts are to move and process. The science behind meditation is on fire. Why? Because scientists and researchers have done imaging on brains of meditators and non-meditators and found meditation changes neuronal pathways in the brain. This changes the patterned behaviors of response within our brain, so we begin to react differently to things that may have once disturbed us. So, when people ask me now, “Are you one of those yogis?” I think to myself and say to them,”I am on a daily journey aspiring to be.” Raquel Jex Forsgren is a Certified Yoga Therapist, C-IAYT. INTUITIVE AND MINDFUL EATING

Establishing a Truly Healthy Relationship with Food

by Barbie Boules

Intuitive eating is the act of discriminating between eating because you’re physiologically hungry and eating for any other reason. It is a process by which you learn to separate food from emotion and genuinely trust yourself to honor your hunger and eat without guilt, respect your fullness, and stop when you are physically satisfied. It’s about reclaiming your power over food and treating yourself well. Learning to eat intuitively and mindfully is a process. Like anything else worth achieving, it takes time. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the journey. 26

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE

SEPTEMBER 2018

Think about young children. They are naturally intuitive eaters. Their patterns vary from day to day and week to week. We know we can’t force a toddler to eat when they’re not hungry. Somehow it works out because they have not yet begun to strongly associate emotions and “rules” with food. When you first allow yourself to eat intuitively, you may go a bit overboard, particularly if you’ve been restricting yourself for some time. When you know that you can enjoy the foods you love, you begin to connect with your body’s

cues, overindulgence eventually starts to dissipate and finding a balance becomes easy. Intuitive Eating is not a “diet;” it is a lifestyle. That said, once we reconnect with food in a healthy way, weight loss is an inevitable benefit if that is what’s appropriate for your unique and beautiful body.

GETTING STARTED When you are feeling hungry, take a moment. Scan your body. When was the last time you ate? How much did you eat? Does it make sense that you are physically hungry? Or, could it be

something else nagging at you? If you are genuinely hungry—EAT! If you determine that you might be stressed, tired, bored, anxious, angry or simply wanting to celebrate, take another moment and see if there’s something else you might do that is satisfying, rather than eat. If you determine that emotional eating is an issue for you, starting a journal is helpful. Notate these moments in your journal: “I want to eat because I am feeling…” “Instead I can…” (If you determine it’s not genuinely hunger.) “I choose to…” (It’s okay if you choose to eat rather than your alternative).

7 TIPS FOR MINDFUL EATING Mindfulness refers to the practice of being present in the moment. While wandering thoughts are completely normal, when you’re trying to establish a healthy relationship with food being present is hugely helpful. Mindfulness encourages us to notice our distractions, and then gently bring ourselves back to the now. This practice sounds challenging, like work, and initially, that’s true. Ultimately, mindful eating brings back the joy of eating because you’re actually experiencing it. 1. Reflect. Before you begin eating, take a moment to reflect upon how you feel. Are you genuinely hungry? Or is there something else you’re feeling that you could address in another way? Determine the difference between physical and psychological hunger. One rule of thumb is if you’re genuinely hungry, you’ll be fine eating a healthy option. If only mac and cheese will do, you’re probably craving a food hug.

4. Put your food on a plate. Eating from the bag, box or carton is a sure-fire way to lose track of portions. 5. Give gratitude. Before you begin eating, take a moment to acknowledge the labor that went into providing your meal (farmers, factory workers, cooks, animals, the Earth, the chefs) and how fortunate you are to be well-fed. 6. Take time to chew and taste. Often times, we are swallowing before we’ve fully chewed, or we’re already taking anther bite when we haven’t swallowed. Go slowly. Chew, taste, then swallow. 7. Make your meal your entertainment. Every once in a while, when dining alone, be conscious of the food’s consistency, flavor, tastes and smells; fully appreciate the meal.

5 TIPS FOR STICKING WITH IT 1. Prepare for success. This is absolutely number one. Preparation is everything when it comes to achieving your nutrition goals. Your environment must match your goals; make the fridge, pantry and equipment work for you.

2. Focus on the process, not the outcome: Goals are not reached overnight. With commitment and consistency, they are achievable. Don’t let perfect get in the way of good enough day. 3. Don’t Eat and Drive. If you drive a lot, consider inspiring audiobooks and turn your car into a classroom. 4. Make a List of Pros and Cons. Ask yourself the pros and cons of staying the same, and the pros and cons of making the change. Write it down! 5. Keep Focused. Create a singular mantra that refocuses you to your goal. Barbie Boules is a registered dietitian and certified health coach in private practice for 17 years. She works with individuals, families and brands, as well as corporate wellness programs. Her approach is personalized to each client—one size never fits all. She is passionate about the concepts of mindful and intuitive eating, with a focus on anti-inflammatory and progut health foods. You can reach her at bboules@nyoutrition.com or by calling 312-607-6689.

2. Have a seat. This is big. You’re less likely to appreciate your food when you are multi-tasking. It’s also difficult to keep track of how much you are eating when you’re in your car or standing in the kitchen. 3. Ditch everything with a screen. No TV, phone, tablet or computer. If you must read—read a bit, stop reading and take a bite and enjoy it. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

[REVIEW OF HEALING MODALITIES]

THE BODY CODE An Energy Medicine System for Experiencing Less Pain and More Peace by Mark A. Hernandez The Body Code is a holistic healing system. The practitioner uses The Body Code Mind Maps (sets of electronic charts,) directed questions, applied kinesiology (muscle testing) and intuition to identify and release energetic imbalances and blockages of a client. This issue can be physical, mental, or spiritual and often causes significant pain and/or disruption in the client’s daily life. Dr. Bradley Nelson, a holistic chiropractor and medical intuitive, created The Body Code after noticing that he would need to make the same chiropractic adjustments on his patients over and over again. In 2007, he wrote and published The Emotion Code, a book that teaches people how to identify and release their emotional baggage. (Dr. Nelson estimates that up to 85% of people’s issues are connected to unresolved emotional issues, either recently, a long time ago, or inherited at the moment of conception.) In 2010, he released The Body Code holistic healing system. The Body Code includes everything in The Emotion Code and is even more comprehensive to include a total of six major categories of imbalances. These categories include: pathogens, misalignments, nutrition and lifestyle imbalances, energies, circuits and systems (organs, glands, chakras and meridians,) as well as toxins. As in The Emotion Code, the practitioner uses muscle testing, directed 28

questions, and The Body Code Mind Maps to identify and release the non-beneficial energies that are locking into place a health or well-being challenge. Changes may show up immediately or over time. Both Emotion Code and Body Code sessions can be conducted in person or by phone or video. Typically, a client will come to a session with one or more complaints of a physical, emotional, or spiritual nature. The practitioner makes a list of these complaints and asks the client to rate the severity of each issue. For example, a “10” means that the issues are of the highest severity, “0” means that the issue is “no issue.” (The goal is to release the severity of each issue so that the client experiences less pain and more peace and equanimity.) With this information, the practitioner then tests to assure that the client is “energetically testable, “ that is, the client is properly hydrated and that the spine is aligned. The practitioner then asks for help from Source, God or however people prefer to see a supreme force in the universe. The practitioner then asks the energy body to show the “priority issue” and then uses The Body Code as a framework to identify and release the root causes for a person’s issue and pain. The practitioner then releases each imbalance. In the original protocol created by Dr. Nelson, the practitioner would release the energetic imbalance by swiping a

magnet over the Governing Meridian of the client. The practitioner continues to identify and release energetic imbalances until the body of the client will let the practitioner know that either they are completely “done” with the issue or done for that session. At the end of the session, the practitioner will ask the client if he/she feels “the same” or “different.” The Body Code is especially effective to reduce chronic pain, be it physical, spiritual, emotional or mental. As The Body Code views the world as pure energy, it can help people address and improve issues in the areas of work, finance, relationships, life purpose, and more. It is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. People should consult with a medical professional if they have an illness or have any concerns whatsoever. If you are experiencing long-standing pain, consider scheduling a Body Code session with a certified practitioner.

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER September 2018 by Tara Aal

Overview September holds the final weeks of summer. Although for most of us, school is back in session and summer vacations are fading into memory. Twice a year, at the equinoxes, we experience a moment of perfect balance between day and night. At the spring equinox, the daylight begins its months of domination, but at the fall equinox, nighttime takes the reins. The fall metaphorically begins with a sunset and draws us into a season of reflection. As the days grow shorter, we have more time with the night. Night represents the less obvious aspects of ourselves. Imagine all those things that jump out in the shadows. Things look and feel different without bright light and there are certain things that only come out in the forgiving dimness. Do you have a different set of rules for what happens at night? For how you allow yourself to show up? Are you a day or night person? Both light and dark are equally wise, true and valuable. We just seem to be more comfortable with things we can see clearly and figure out. Fall reminds us of the mystery, romance and intrigue of twilight and begins the descent into the darkness of winter. Astrology reveals the nature of your personal wiring and energy. It also reminds you of your deepest desires and intentions for growth. It’s an amazing tool to bring about awareness, raise consciousness, and increase empathy and compassion. Check your natal chart out at www.astro.com. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete her orbit through the twelve signs, spending approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is void-of-course (VoC), it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets until it leaves the sign it’s in. We sometimes say the Moon is floating between signs during these times, and it creates a sense of timelessness. You can embrace these events by slowing down and tuning into your inner guidance. It’s not the best time to start new things, but it’s the perfect opportunity to make room for what’s to come. If you want to know more, check out www.moontracks.com.

SEPTEMBER 2018

Saturday, September 1 If you wake up feeling emotionally sensitive or set off, pay attention. This Moon-Jupiter opposition can seem to threaten your ability to maintain your comfort zone, but it knows you’re just playing it safe. If your comfort zone has become a little too sheltered, the rise of intense emotion might be just the thing to get you unstuck.

Sunday, September 2 Gemini Moon lightens up the mood, but the waning half-moon phase reflects a time of heightened consciousness and awareness of your contribution to society. Gemini loves to talk, and meaningful conversation can change the world. Taurus Moon VoC begins 12:56 a.m. until 3:01 a.m. when the Moon enters Gemini.

Monday, September 3 Sometimes things don’t make sense, at least not in a way our rational brains can figure out, and our clinging to the past can get in the way of really enjoying the

moment. Moon-Neptune square might feel like the ocean of emotion is taking you over. If you go with the flow, the answers just appear on their own.

Tuesday, September 4 Moon-Saturn opposition can bring out the grumpiest in anyone. It’s hard to admit it, but we all have moments when we know we just need to grow up. Today could be one of those days, so be ready to build some emotional muscle and act with kindness and wisdom. Gemini Moon VoC begins 1:37 AM until 7:03 a.m. when the Moon enters Cancer.

Wednesday, September 5 The afternoon could be intense with Moon-Pluto opposition, but remember that Pluto always serves to empower you and usually by compelling you to let go of dead weight. Mercury enters Virgo tonight and we’ll be more attuned to the fine details. Virgo loves to analyze, so use this energy on something that really needs some thoughtful processing.

Thursday, September 6 After nearly five months retrograde, Saturn turns direct encouraging us to move forward with our goals. Our emotional grounding takes a hit today with Moon making stressful aspects to several planets. If you can stand being a little uncomfortable and stay the course, the ship will move with you—meaning you are the captain and can make tough decisions that bring satisfaction and earned respect. Cancer Moon VoC begins 7:43 a.m. until 8:54 a.m. when the Moon enters Leo.

Friday, September 7 Hopes and dreams want to be realized today and the planets are stretching our sense of reality. If you’ve been playing small, it’s time to stand and take up your space on this planet. Sun-Neptune opposition can bring the night into day; your dreams into waking moments. If you’ve been separating the two, try blending them into a new story.

Saturday, September 8 Moon-Saturn-Uranus Grand Earth Trine offers major flow on the physical plane

if we choose to use it. Get to work and make it happen—whatever brings you joy and sense of accomplishment. Leo Moon VoC begins 8:31 a.m. until 9:29 a.m. when the Moon enters Virgo.

on less. Reconsider what it means to be rich and be willing to release all kinds of material attachments in the process.

Sunday, September 9

Moon-Sun sextile reflects an opportunity to unite our inner and outer selves. Virgo Sun wants it to be perfect, but Scorpio Moon enjoys getting messy. When these two come together, we have the perfect mess or messy perfection. Don’t take yourself so seriously; you’re exactly what and where you need to be. Scorpio Moon VoC begins 3:53 a.m. until 7:45 p.m. when the Moon enters Sagittarius.

The New Moon today is in Virgo. It’s the perfect time to set intentions to organize and prioritize your life in ways that align with your heart’s truest desires. Venus just entered Scorpio and the love goddess always demands more in the sign of the deepest depths. Consider if you’re ready for the next level, and if you are, be ready to be transformed.

Monday, September 10 Moon enters Libra and Mars enters Aquarius with a gust of wind that gets us thinking and needing to do something socially that makes an impact. This is beyond linking up with friends. What can you create with others that you cannot do alone? Virgo Moon VoC begins 10:12 a.m. until 10:20 a.m. when the Moon enters Libra.

Tuesday, September 11 It’s easier to set yourself up for success today when it comes to being who you are and sharing it with the world. SunPluto trine offers a well of revitalization for your energy and enhances your drive to be seen in your own light. Libra Moon VoC begins 5:57 p.m. until tomorrow.

Wednesday, September 12 If your closest relationships are dragging you down with drama, jealousy, or control, the Venus-Uranus opposition wants you to see a different way. It isn’t really about that person driving you crazy, it’s your ongoing “love” patterns that need revision. See what happens when you let go of the old script. You’re tired of it anyway. Libra Moon VoC ends 1:15 p.m. when the Moon enters Scorpio.

Thursday, September 13 If you’re stuck in a mental worry loop, you have company. With Uranus retrograde in Taurus, we’re all rethinking what we value and how we use our resources. If money is on your mind, shift your attention from lack to plenty. More never comes from focusing

Friday, September 14

Saturday, September 15 Sagittarius teaches us many things; some of them we don’t want to hear and don’t enjoy hearing at such loud volumes with lack of tact. Sometimes we get too refined for our own good. So under this Sagittarian Moon, practice speaking your truth as directly as you can. Don’t lose your kindness but ditch any tendency to dress something up to avoid its raw nature. It feels good to call a spade a spade.

Sunday, September 16 Feeling and thinking challenge each other today and just when we have the impulse to move on to something more exciting, our minds can trap us on that hamster wheel that goes nowhere. We can’t physically separate our heads from our hearts and it’s a good day to reconsider how they work best together. Sagittarius Moon VoC begins 6:15 p.m. until tomorrow.

Monday, September 17 It’s a sexy day with Moon-Saturn conjunction in Capricorn. And yes, I’m serious. While this energy pushes us to get down to business and take the driver’s seat, it is also extremely sensual. Earth energy knows how to enjoy the body, so try sexy Saturn on for yourself. Sagittarius Moon VoC ends 6:07 AM when the Moon enters Capricorn.

Tuesday, September 18 Hello, energetic evening earthquakes! If your body feels a little shaken or dizzy, you’re feeling the Mars-Uranus square. And Moon-Pluto conjunction can produce CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

emotional waves of anything from anger to fear to pleasure. If something comes up for you, be thankful for the chance to name it and send it on its way.

Wednesday, September 19 Capricorn Moon is friendly with Mercury and Sun this morning which eases communication and the progression of goals and projects. Take advantage by sharing ideas and nailing down the details for anything that’s been left hanging in the pending queue. Capricorn Moon VoC begins 12:10 p.m. until 6:51 p.m. when the Moon enters Aquarius.

Thursday, September 20 Be careful not to wear your brain out today. Mercury-Sun conjunction in Virgo is a workaholic! On the upside, it can get to the root of problems and expose them to the light. Use this power to serve a good cause and lift you above the rubble of mental chaos.

Friday, September 21 Mercury enters Libra late tonight and with it, things should seem easier. Mercury rules connections of all kinds

and Libra has natural grace. Our words can flow with new harmony and our interactions naturally move toward compromise. It’s a good time to engage in that conversation you know needs to happen. Aquarius Moon VoC begins 12:13 p.m. until tomorrow.

Saturday, September 22 Libra takes the baton for its month of the year, and we celebrate the fall equinox. Balance is the theme, but Libra isn’t the sign of balance. It’s the sign of coming into balance. To find balance, we play with extremes and tension, we contrast and compare, and we judge. The equinoxes remind us that all things cycle in and out of balance, just as the day and night meet on equal ground twice a year. This is the nature of relationship, Libra’s domain. Where are you in the dance? Aquarius Moon VoC ends 7:27 a.m. when the Moon enters Pisces.

Wednesday, September 26 Moon-Pluto square in the morning could start us off with some uncomfortable moments, but the rest of the day is like an open canvas for you to create anything you want. Aries Moon VoC begins 5:28 a.m. until tomorrow.

Thursday, September 27 Taurus Moon is lit up with connections to Uranus, Saturn, and Mars. With the rebel, authority, and energizer in the mix, we can expect all the feels. Crazy and argumentative people could push all your buttons, but you know how to stay centered. Aries Moon VoC ends 2:15 a.m. when the Moon enters Taurus.

You might not get the words out of your mouth the way you’d like, but boy will the feeling be behind it. Mercury-Saturn square requires getting creative when communicating, so don’t be too put off by others’ rigid or harsh tendencies. It’s just the outer shell. Moon-Neptune conjunction in Pisces is hypersensitive and wants to escape anything that hurts. Feel for the intention and voice of the heart and let the small annoying stuff slide.

Some days are better without too many words and Taurus Moon is a good time to listen to your body. Its intelligence is truly untapped. Taurus Moon VoC begins 5:36 p.m. until tomorrow.

Monday, September 24 Happy Full Aries Moon! Aries Moon is a natural leader and maverick. She has the heart of a pioneer. She’s calling to all of us tonight, to tap into our courage and sense of adventure. We’re all blazing our own trails, but we don’t always slow down to acknowledge what it takes to keep on keeping on here on planet Earth. Aries Moon is a celebration of being alive and creating life in every moment. Pisces Moon VoC begins 12:25 a.m. until 6:03 p.m. when the Moon enters Aries.

Tuesday, September 25 Every day, most of us are doing things and going places. It’s easy to operate on autopilot and lose track of why we’re doing what we do and if we even like it. Sun-Saturn square is a checkpoint, like

Saturday, September 29 If you spent some time listening to your body yesterday, today is a good day to write those messages down and come up with ideas to use and share the wisdom. Taurus Moon VoC ends 8:26 a.m. when the Moon enters Gemini.

Sunday, September 30 Pluto turns direct after five months retrograde and astrologers joke about the releases that can happen—even the body’s elimination process. If you used the retrograde period to redefine what power means to you and how to remove any blockages on your path of evolution, it’s time to let that s**t go and get off the pot! Gemini Moon VoC begins 10:37 a.m. until tomorrow.

FULL MOON GRATITUDE September 2018 by Mija Bradford

We’re out of eclipse season and taking a break from the retrogrades in September! NEW MOON IN VIRGO SUNDAY, SEPT. 9, 2018 This New Moon cycle may start by causing confusion, deception and fear. Take the time to resolve problems as they arise. Virgo’s analytical skills are highly activated; use them to understand what course of action to take. You will see that the positives outweigh the negatives and that there are more solutions than problems. This new moon will help you uncover secrets and overcome your fears. You can also question old habits, behaviors and beliefs as you search for new and inventive ways to make progress. This will lead to more confidence and success.

HARVEST FULL MOON IN ARIES TUESDAY, SEPT. 25, 2018

items that you’ve manifested in the past seasons. It may be qualities in yourself or achievements or attainments that you are thankful for. Or, if you faced a lot of challenges, those trials were opportunities for growth, change and achievement during these times. Acknowledge these times as well. The point is, you don’t need to create any restrictions on what goes onto your list. Be free. 2. If possible, go outside and sit under the Full Moon.

The September Full Moon is known as the “Harvest Moon.” The name is attributed to Native Americans who called it this because it marked when their chief food staples were ready for gathering. The name also denotes the Full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The equinox marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator (the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator.) This year, this will occur in the Midwest on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, three days before the Full Moon.

3. Light a candle. Light some incense. You may want to use white sage or Palo Santo to cleanse the space you are in and your own energy field.

Also, this Full Moon falls under the first cardinal fire sign, Aries. Aries is all about initiative. This vibration is interested in moving forward, not looking back. However, the Full Moons ask us to pause and reflect, which is not the sort of thing Aries typically enjoys. This sign is full of vim and vigor and possesses a drive and ambition that is unmistakable. Enthusiasm and a zest for life fill. So, take the ambition of this sign in this season of harvest to reap the seeds planted in spring. What manifestations have come into full fruition for you this summer? Harvest and acknowledge it. An attitude of gratitude brings opportunities.

5. Read through and ponder your gratitude list. You may want to read it out loud, or silently inside of your heart. Take your time and allow the appreciation for anything else to rise within you. Your words may be as simple as “I’m thankful for enabling/supporting/showing me…”

Full Moons are times of illumination and clarity, as well as the power of natural energies. So, they always bring opportunities to experience and harness power from deep within. During this time, we usually talk about ceremonies to release items that no longer serve us. But, with it being a Harvest Moon under the energy of Aries, I thought it would be an excellent time to participate in a beautiful gratitude ceremony.

HARVEST FULL MOON GRATITUDE CEREMONY 1. Before starting the ceremony, spend time with your journal listing the things in your life for which you are grateful. Especially the

4. If possible, sit on the ground and connect with the Moon. Imagine your crown chakra opening up like a flower, and the light of the Moon streaming down and through it, filling up your body with a silvery, white light. Let this light go wherever it needs to go in your physical and emotional body.

6. Being thankful and feeling proud of yourself is definitely something great to practice. If you feel uncomfortable doing this, then all the more reason for you to try! The key to this part of the ritual is to feel the gratitude. The attitude of gratitude brings forth opportunity. The words are merely the catalyst to release the energy that creates and allows the mind to focus on what is available. By expressing genuine gratitude, we are opening up the energetic channels for more movement through our lives. It is impossible to generate or manifest positive change if we’re stuck in the mentality of lack. Giving gratitude is one of the most potent agents for manifesting. Mija Bradford is an intuitive life coach and Reiki Master who works with clients in all aspects of life through the Akashic Records and Universal Laws. THE TAO OF COOKING Gluten-Free “Stay-In” by Janae Jean

September is such a busy time of year for many of us. Summer vacation season is done, and it’s time to go back to school. Even those of us who aren’t in school or don’t have students in our homes are getting ready for the cooler fall days. As we retreat back indoors, it’s tempting to sit back, curl up with a book or laptop and order delivery for dinner. But, our favorite take-out dishes are often full of empty calories or ingredients that do not agree with a glutenfree or plant-based diet. This month, we have two quick recipes that take inspiration from North American Chinese take-out and let us get the pleasure of ordering in while cooking at home. It’s not take-out for dinner, it’s “stay-in.”

GLUTEN-FREE GENERAL’S TOFU This recipe gets a spicy kick from chili garlic sauce. However, if you do not care for spicy food, feel free to substitute another sauce for the chili garlic. Try Meyer lemon marmalade, grape jelly or plum sauce. Or, leave it out entirely. It’s up to you. Be creative! Imagine how the flavors and scents mix together. Let the dish “tell” you what it needs. That is the tao (or way) of cooking. Sauce ¼ cup vegetable stock 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 teaspoon cornstarch ½ teaspoon powdered ginger

1 tablespoon tamari 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce or other sauce (optional)

FRIED CAULIFLOWER “RICE” 4 cups riced cauliflower 1 tablespoon sesame oil

Entrée 1 lb. tofu (drained and pressed) cut into one-inch pieces

½ cup tofu scramble

1 egg, beaten or ¼ cup vegan mayo ¼ cup cornstarch

½ cup frozen peas, carrots and green beans

½ cup white cornmeal

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1 cup coconut flour

2 chopped green onions

2 green onion, chopped into one-inch lengths

¼ cup tamari

1 cup of chopped broccoli florets 1 teaspoon minced garlic Salt and pepper to taste Mix all the sauce ingredients until the sugar dissolves, then set aside. Take your protein (tofu pieces) and dip in vegan mayo. Mix together cornstarch, cornmeal and coconut flour. Dredge and completely cover the vegan mayo protein with the starch blend. Heat about one-quarter inch of peanut or high-heat coconut oil in a wok or frying pan. Carefully add the protein to the wok, cooking and turning until wellcooked and all sides are golden brown. then add garlic, and chopped broccoli and toss together. Once the broccoli is moderately tender, stir in the sauce and toss together to coat the vegetables and protein well. Stir in chopped green onion. Serve hot. Makes about four servings. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator in a sealed container for up to five days.

½ teaspoon salt ½ white onion, chopped

Beat tofu and add salt. In a small frying pan, scramble tofu and set aside. Heat lightly oiled frying pan or wok over medium. Add sesame oil and sauté white onion, garlic and frozen vegetable blend. Then turn heat to medium-high and stir in riced cauliflower and tamari. Cook until heated through and golden brown. This should be about five minutes. Toss in scrambled tofu. Remove from heat and stir in chopped green onion and serve. Makes about four servings. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator in a sealed container for up to five days. Janae Jean serves as editor, social media manager and podcast co-host for Conscious Community Magazine. She enjoys improvising in the kitchen and creating recipes with her loved ones and is very grateful for their suggestions, feedback and assistance. [BOOK REVIEWS]

In Print Reviews by Kayla Hancock

The Power of 1(0):

A Guide to Living the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule in Modern Times, by Denise Alexander Pyle (Balboa Press, Paperback, $12.99) It can be easy to get lost and confused in this world of constant contradictory messages and belief systems. Denise Alexander Pyle explores each of the ten commandments and their correspondences to the ten spheres of the kabbalistic tree of life. The energy of these sacred concepts share messages which all of us can connect with regardless of what higher power we believe in. After all, we are all going through this adventure called life together.

Cleansing Rites of Curanderismo: Limpias Espirituales of Ancient Mesoamerican Shamans, by Erika

Buenaflor M.A. J.D. (Bear & Company, Paperback, $18.00) Limpias were once used regularly by Mesoamerican shamans. The practice can involve a variety of methods to cleanse and purify people and help them to build positive qualities within themselves. With over 20 years of experience as a curandera, Erika Buenaflor dives deeper into the sacredness of these rituals. She also explores and explains the different types of limpia ceremonies and how heart-to-heart conversations (also known as platicas) can further aid one on their healing journey down the road to self-transformation.

Finding Magic:

A Spiritual Memoir, by Sally Quinn (HarperOne, Paperback, $15.99) In this book, Sally Quinn shares with readers her colorful journey from her Southern roots to her seat at the Washington Post and all that she has learned in between. Quinn was raised Presbyterian, although she also learned about occult practices from older generations of her family. These primary spiritual experiences, along with later personal and political struggles, revealed to Quinn that it is the intimacy between people that has always provided her with strength, nourishment and the fascination to stay engaged in this magical world. 38

The Heart of the Shaman:

Stories and Practices of the Luminous Warrior, by Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D. (Hay House, Inc., Paperback, $19.99) In this book, Alberto Villoldo shares the wisdom and teachings of the ancient peoples of the Andes and the Amazon, focusing particularly on their concept of the sacred dream. The sacred dream is our own vision that drives us towards creating our future and fulfilling our purpose in the universe. Villoldo invites readers to follow in the steps of the courageous warrior—to reclaim our lives for ourselves and overcome the fears that hold us back from experiencing true freedom.

The Three Questions:

How to Discover and Master the Power Within You, by Don Miguel Ruiz (HarperOne, Hardcover, $24.99)

We are all beings of immense power, but not all of us use that power wisely. Don Miguel Ruiz takes readers deeper into the Toltec tradition and shares how we can use our power to benefit ourselves and the collective instead of using it destructively. Ruiz teaches us how to anchor our power in our identity so that we can act in harmony with the universe to overcome fear and find peace.
