Letter from the Publisher We are now completing three years in the energy of 2012. I recall vividly the debates, analysis and multitude of programs focused on December 21, 2012. There were many documentaries and pseudo- documentaries being produced and shown in theaters large and small, including one major studio production with Hollywood stars. But that intense interest stopped when the world failed to end on December 22. I was a speaker at an internationally televised conference on that day, sponsored by Barbara Marx Hubbard and her Conscious Evolutionaries group. My presentation was on the nature of things to come, a forecast of the changes we could expect in the coming years and decades. Some of those changes have already taken place, many are in process now, and some we will just have to wait to unfold. I finished my presentation and went downstairs from the main room for a cup of coffee. It had already been a long day and it was about to get longer, as an unanticipated and very amusing scenario played out. The speaker following me was so convinced that, according to his understanding and the understanding of many others about the Mayan prophesies, that the world was about to end, that he had prepared absolutely nothing to share with the international audience and sent a messenger to ask me for help. Would I please come back to the podium and have a public conversation and Q & A with him to fill his allotted time slot? I must say that it was the most unusual request I have received in many years, perhaps in a lifetime. I was happy to oblige and rescue my colleague. Perhaps he was the only person to be saved from the result of the world not ending! “The Science of Miracles,” an excellent DVD with Greg Braden narrating, was screened as the last of the Spiritual Learning Center’s current movie series. The discussion that followed was provocative, with many interesting questions to stimulate the lengthy conversations that followed. There is so much to share within the group energy while hearing a variety of perspectives on the film. It surprises me that more seekers don’t avail themselves of the opportunity to participate in these screenings and discussions, or just sit and listen to them. December is historically a slow month for spiritual events, and rightly so. There is enough holiday activity to keep us all busy. I will be conducting a traditional burning bowl meditation and ceremony at Crystal River Gifts in South Elgin on Tuesday December 29th at 7 p.m. for those of you who are in the area. There will be follow-up meditations at other locations on attracting the new and manifesting your heart’s desires as we begin the new year. As part of my tradition, there will be a potluck with wine ‘meet and greet’ following the regular Thursday night meditation on December 3rd at the Spiritual Learning Center in Burr Ridge. All are invited. Plan to attend. Call for details. Until next time,

Walter

(Murphy is the acerbic, witty, spiritual seeker and narrator of Fran’s book Lord Have Murphy. His wry commentary reminds us that we don’t need a lot of trappings to get conscious. We just need to marshal our attention!) Navigating a busy New York sidewalk these days requires constant vigilance lest we get trampled by people with heads bowed and eyes on their phones. It’s hypnotic, this marvelous content-provider in our hands, and some of us can’t help but constantly check it. The phrase “Put Down The Phone” headlines a recent New York Times article announcing a $200 app that allows you to put away your cell and still have peace of mind that you won’t miss anything “important.” But what important things are we missing when we are glued to the phone, to the exclusion of everything else? As my friend Murphy puts it, “Is that the sun blazing gold across the horizon? I hadn’t noticed because my world has shrunk to the size of a kumquat.” Must we give up our cells to wake up and smell the roses? Golden opportunity here! Especially when we consider that transformation may not be about giving up anything, but may be about opening to a consciousness that embraces all of it, limited by none of it. Doing so allows us to live in both streams simultaneously-the everyday and the “higher.” “Can I walk and talk and chew gum at the same time?” (Murphy ponders). That’s the challenge. To bring higher consciousness to life, Murphy advocates “getting on the bus running,” that is, becoming aware of oneself right in the midst of an activity. At any moment, there’s a choice to be made between two dispositions of mind: (1) passivity and identification (mind busy coming up with answers; attention moving around all on its own, and hooked into whatever attracts it) and (2) awareness and presence (mind quiet; attention not moving around, but focused on impressions from the senses now, and joining with the subtle energy animating the body). When one is “identified,” it’s on automatic-pilot mode: thoughts take over and there is no focusing on presence. The question is: do we have to stop what we’re doing or behave a different way to wake up? As Murphy says, “It’s wonderful to sit still for a moment, relaxed and quiet, so subtler impressions impress. But this is not getting on the bus running. This is getting on the bus as it waits for you at the curb. By the monastery.” Indeed to “get on the bus running, nothing about me needs to change except where the attention is.” In theory at least, we should be able to be on the phone-totally enjoying it-and be present at the same 4 Conscious Community -DECEMBER 2015

time. We just need some practice in “multidimensional living”and something to remind us that we can “vibrate higher.” Our cellphones... vibrate! And make various sounds at random moments. We can even download our spiritual ringtone of choice. What great reminders to mobilize attention! It’s like that fictional gadget in René Daumal’s 1952 masterpiece Mount Analogue: the portable phonograph that is rigged to wake you up by crying out at the most unexpected moments, “Who do you think you are?” It’s the temple bell that rings on the hour to rouse one from automatism to restore awareness. We can connect what we do with what we really are beyond form. All that ringing, pinging, and vibrating can be used as a call to become present. And the first step, when one is called, is simply to witness. Wordless, neutral, me, now. Murphy calls it “Observing Mode”: “It’s all about streaming live video of yourself. It’s reality-show you! Try it. Camera on. Click. Feel that camera on you? Your body being seen-posture, facial expression-as you read these words? That’s live video while it’s happening. I’m actually streaming right now.” Here are three things we’ve been trying in this mode, just for half an hour each day, after becoming collected and saying out loud our intention: Cellphone RINGING? Observe my body now. As if something sees me here-face, jaw, shoulders, and the arm reaching for the phone.... Cellphone PINGING? See myself here. The ping says, “Attention! Look now” as the head lowers to reads the words.... Cellphone VIBRATING? Sense my body. Because it’s vibrating too, with subtle life energy, through the whole of it, from the top of my head, to my seat on the chair, to the soles of my feet. My hand, filled with attention, taking hold of the phone.... Our mindfulness practices-observing the body just as it is, listening with both ears, sensing the body-all need reminding factors so that many times during the day our field of awareness goes wide again. A Selfphone can help when we intentionally connect it with waking up. As with yoga, this “union” takes repetition and patience. But what a gift-that first time the phone “pings” and we immediately become present. What opens for us is the unlimited dimension of attention.

And no judgment allowed. Say I forget for most of the appointed half hour. No worries! As Murphy puts it, “No need to call it Incapacity. That’s a city for whiners.” The attention, when passive, simply gets occupied elsewhere; it happens; so whatever reminds us to activate attention and come home is awesome. Whenever we remember, by means of whatever thought, let it be a neutral bell simply calling us to become aware now.

THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM: PRESENTED BY CHRISTINE ARENS, PROFESSIONAL AND TEACHING ASTROLOGER

Was the Star of Bethlehem an astronomical phenomenon? The general answer is “no.” It was not a comet, a significator of death. Nor was it a nova, as none were recorded during this time. So what was the “star” that the Magi followed and what is the most likely date for the birth of Christ that fits the facts that we have and the astrology of the times? More than 30 years ago, Christine Arens’ mother challenged her to use astrology to work on the puzzle of the Star of Bethlehem. Her answers will amaze you! This fascinating program will be presented at The Edgar Cayce Holistic Center and Bookstore in Unity Northwest Church, 259 E. Central Road, Des Plaines, on Sunday, December 6th, from 2 to 5pm. The admission for this event is $45, $35 for A.R.E. members. Christine is presenting, “Eclipses for the Year 2016” on Friday, evening, December 4th, from 7 to 9pm, also at the Center. DREAM ON by Walter Perschke

Dreams are the primary way that our higher self communicates with us. Dreams are a spontaneous product of our subconscious mind and beyond the reach of the will. If you understand your dreams and the messages they hold for you, you have made a big step forward on your spiritual journey. By interpreting the real dreams of real people, this column is intended to facilitate your understanding. Everyone dreams, but most people don’t remember. To assist in your recollection, keep a dream log by your bed to record everything you can remember as soon as you awaken. This sends a message to your higher self that you want this information and more will flow to you.

in a row, it came sporadically-- I could almost sense that I was gonna’ have that dream, and I would get scared even more. Walter: Were you the only kid on the floor? Dreamer 1: No Walter: When you ran, were you running by yourself? Dreamer 1: Yes. Walter: What was under the bridge? Dreamer 1: Darkness. I remember seeing jagged, almost like sides of mountains

Happy Dreaming!

Walter: It was dangerous? Dreamer 1: This dream actually occurred a while ago but I have just remembered it recently and it was a recurring one. I was walking as if on a field trip and it was to this old house that we were going. There was a red carpet and there were ropes on either side of it, and somehow I knew I wasn’t supposed to touch anything outside of the rope. As I’m walking, there are other people. They weren’t necessarily kids, it was just a field trip of people. Walter: Were you a kid in the dream? Dreamer 1: I was, well, yeah I was, like a teenager maybe. And as we were walking, it was really creepy and dark, and I would watch people in front of me reach out over the rope and touch something like a piece of furniture. When they did that they would get sucked into the drawer or sucked in to the cabinet, and they would just be gone. And so I’m walking and I’m watching this and I’m trying really hard to, ya’ know, not touch anything, and pretty soon I’m all alone. And then it switches right away, like all of a sudden I’m on this rickety bridge that’s over something…I don’t know if it was water or if it was land because I couldn’t see. But I’m running, and as I’m running, the pieces of the bridge are falling off like I’m just barely making it and there’s this… the closest thing I could think of was like Dracula, something chasing me that I knew was gonna’ like kill me or something. Walter: Oh, a monster.

Allerton Park

Dreamer 1: Yeah! A monster!

So I would run and just as he got to me I would wake up. I’ve had this dream like five or six times. And it would get to the point when I would get ready to go to sleep -- I mean it wasn’t 8 Conscious Community -DECEMBER 2015

Dreamer 1: Very dangerous. I knew that if I fell I would die. Walter: When was the last time you had this dream? Dreamer 1: I mean were talking over five to seven years. But it just came to me, it’s almost like I had this moment of being awake where all of a sudden I remembered it, and I haven’t been able to shake it. I haven’t dreamt about it, but it has been on my mind. And I forgot I had it. Walter: Your guides knew you were coming here. Dreamer 1: Okay. Walter: I’m serious. They’ll pop it into your consciousness. When was the first time you had this dream?

Dreamer 1: The very first time I was probably in my freshman year of high school. Walter: This is going to get very emotional. So, it has to do with a traumatic experience when you were in high school or grade school and that’s where the fear level is coming from. And the rope is a boundary, and the people that reach over the rope get destroyed. That’s reinforcing your need for boundaries, that you need to have boundaries and other people need to respect your boundaries. Now, the thing chasing you, and this is pretty universal, any time you have a monster chasing you it is an aspect of yourself. And if you will turn around and face the monster, nine times out of ten the monster will either morph into you or it will disintegrate. No, but really, it’s an aspect of yourself and it is something that we do. Actually, one of the movies we’re going show, I’m not sure where it is on the schedule, is called The Shadow Effect . The shadow was one of the archetypes of Carl Jung, a world famous psychologist. And Debbie Ford, who died about a year and half ago, has done a lot of work on the shadow affect. We are actually going to show a movie that was made of her workshop on the shadow effect. The shadow is called a shadow because it is something hidden from our conscious mind but it is an aspect of ourselves. It doesn’t have to be scary, but it usually is. It is something we have not confronted in our waking life. When we confront it in our waking life, it will go away. And that’s what was chasing you. Does that make sense? Dreamer 1: I understand completely. Walter: Good.

Walter: That’s what it’s about. It’s about making the decisions and it’s telling you that no matter which way you go, whether you go left or right, it’s going to be okay. The only thing where it is not okay is if you stand still. So you have to move and it doesn’t matter which way you choose to move because it is going to be okay. And that’s always a good feeling. People are really afraid of change. We are living in a time where if you don’t change, you’re just missing the whole point. We are in the greatest energy since Jesus walked here or since Moses walked here, since Abraham walked here. We are in a fabulous energy but you have to swim in it, you know? If you have the greatest lake in the world and you never put your toe in, or if you’ve got the fastest car or most luxurious car but you never drive it, then what the point? It’s about moving ahead. And even though it may seem moving back, it’s probably not. It’s probably moving ahead. If you would like to submit a dream for possible inclusion to appear in this column, please submit your dream in email Walter@ ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com and give us a phone number. Only submission with phone number will be consider. Walter Perschke is the publisher of Conscious Community magazine, formerly The Monthly Aspectarian, America’s oldest spiritual and metaphysical magazine. Mr. Perschke is a Professor of Metaphysics, writes, teaches, and speaks frequently on metaphysical subjects, and is a popular guest speaker at conferences and seminars. He hosts a weekly guided meditation group. Walter was nominated for an Emmy Award and is a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Dreamer 2: Sometimes I don’t know how much to take stock in a dream, like it’s just an event that I was thinking about, that person earlier that day, and so forth, and then it comes up in my dream. I just wonder, oh, you’re just dreaming about that because you saw it earlier. Anyway, yesterday I was thinking maybe I should talk to my intern; he has a nice babysitting job. Maybe it will be a way to make extra money… and I also had seen two children throughout the day. Then in my dream, I dreamed that I was interviewing for a job for babysitting. It was at a couple houses up from the house I grew up in and I kinda’ saw that the kids that I had seen in the day were in my dream. The little girl was dancing and the little boy was falling asleep on me. Like I had seen on the train. I did feel contentment. And also the man I was speaking to —it was like he was a doctor and he was saying that he didn’t know how to help people with a thyroid problem. I have a thyroid problem. And then I said, “Oh, well.” I quit drinking because I think that will maybe help it, and he said yeah, it definitely will help it. And then I just feel like when I was leaving that I knew that I kinda’ had the job if I wanted it, and that’s what I remember. Walter: And were you feeling okay throughout the whole thing?

I am. I feel. I do. I love. I serve. I speak. I see. I understand!

All About Town…

Empower Yourself and Create Your Life Hampton Inn and Suites, Chicago, IL November 7th, 2015

by Theresa Puskar

EMPOWER YOURSELF AND CREATE YOUR LIFE WORKSHOP FACILITATORS & ATTENDEES How many miracles have to occur in your life before you have enough faith to know that you are protected, guided, and loved? My life has been an unending symphony of miracles, each with its own magical song. Yet, despite the barrage of evidence of a benevolent, conscious, and co-creative universe, I still harbor so much doubt. As of late, I’ve been asking myself, “How many miracles is it going to take before I surrender my fearful attempts to control everything, and allow my divine to take care of me?” I was recently at my weekly Oneness event and the leader, Savita, shared her understanding of what the deeksha blessing is and how it works. One of the things she said was that it clears blocks in the parietal lobe of the brain, and activates the frontal lobe. This energetic surge helps to quiet our minds, and quell emotional blocks such as fear. I have been asking myself, “If I am in this much fear, how much faith do I really have?” It has been two years since I went to Oneness University in India, and as I reflect, I note how much fear impacts my life. I have traveled throughout the world on my own. I have pursued a risky career as an actress, and I have moved to new cities without knowing a soul. Compared to most, I would be considered quite a courageous individual. That being said, during the past two to three months in particular, I’ve noted how much energy I burn 10 Conscious Community --DECEMBER 2015

on fear-based thinking. I have come to realize that my body often functions in fight-or-flight mode. My breathing is very shallow, my muscles are extremely tight, and my mind and body are constantly racing. I encourage you to take a moment and check in with your inner fear detector. Are your muscles tense? Do you usually breathe in a shallow manner? Do you often find yourself worrying and anxious about your day-to-day encounters? “Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.” - Martin Luther King This weekend I took my first step towards exploring my lack of faith when I attended an Immersion Process (IP) seminar hosted by husband and wife team, Jim and Christiana Herbert. Entitled Empower Yourself and Create Your Life, the fundamental teachings of this workshop were based on the insights of bestselling author and spiritual teacher, Mike Dooley. Amazed at how quickly and immensely Jim and Christiana’s lives have shifted in the past one and a half years, my friend, personal coach, and Immersion trainer, Marcy Walsh encouraged me to join her for the day. I’m glad I did. I think that sitting with the fear, and observing it is a powerful first step. During the workshop, Jim and Christiana shared their own stories of emotional and spiritual awakening. Christiana told

a particularly moving account of how she pulled I opened my envelope, and of course, it was herself out of a deep depression and low self-esteem the perfect message. The word on the card was into her flourishing relationship with her husband, “Faithful.” I know that as I become truly faithful, Jim. The sharing she did was a great example of the the fear-based thoughts, and my body’s fight-orpower that comes from living an authentic life, and flight response to them will decrease significantly. telling our true stories – the good, the bad, and the The task now is to cultivate my faith. How will I ugly. I think that sometimes we are so busy “doing” do so? I don’t know, yet I do know that the road our lives, that we forget to take a breath, sit back, I need to take will surface, as I wholeheartedly and observe the magnificence of our existence. So, commit to finding that answer. Jim & Christina Herbert as she reflected on her life, I reflected on mine. My life has truly been extraordinary. It has been a rollercoaster As we drove home, Marcy and I discussed ideas and insights that of laughter, love, hatred, peace, fear, angst, and everything in came in response to the workshop. She shared a potent Byron between. The fear that I ponder is one of the key ingredients in Katie quote that really moved me, “If you have a thought and it my life’s recipe. It is part of the experiential stew that has taken feels bad, it is not the truth.” Wow! What an aha moment that me to where I am today. I am a hero in my own life’s journey. I was! If I have a thought and it feels bad, it is not the truth. I believe we are all epic heroes in our life journeys. If we stop long immediately take note that when I think fearful thoughts, they enough to observe where we are and where we have come from, always feel bad. They are not the truth. Then what is the truth? we’d each own the rights to some pretty amazing docudramas! I am immediately taken to the powerful words of Marianne Take a moment to ask yourself what role fear has played in your Williamson, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our personal epic. deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Emotions that are unpleasant can serve to open our hearts and ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?’ deepen our understanding of life’s truths.” - Unknown Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing I find the fear that I experience to be unpleasant, to say the least. enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel I don’t like it, and I judge it. In this judging, I resist it. There insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. is a price that I pay for that resistance, however. The saying, We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. “What you resist persists” is so true in this case. Does this mean It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own we should all walk around playing out our fears in the fiercest light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do way possible? Perhaps the first step, as Christiana and Jim so the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence aptly presented, is owning the fear, and seeing it as a way out. automatically liberates others.” The truth is, our greatest fear As I publicly share my struggle with my fear, I hereby own it. my greatest fear is the power that rests at the core of my being. However, what is the next step? While I can blame everyone else for keeping me small, I know that I am the sole composer of that fearful tune. A Course In Miracles teaches that there are only two emotions: Fear or love. Which do you choose? Flashing back to my training at Oneness University, I am reminded that all thoughts are part of the “thoughtmosphere.” I As we get caught up in the dramas of our lives, often we forget do not own them, and they are not me. The prescription for this that we have a choice. I can choose to be in fear, or in love in spiritual malady is first to acknowledge such thoughts and the each and every moment. Many times I have chosen fear. It has feelings they spark within me. Then being open to fully feel driven the limiting beliefs that keep me from achieving and living them, and finally to allow them to move through me. This I know my dreams. In the workshop, Jim defined limiting beliefs as: to be true –now all I need is the faith to do so! “Anything you have in your brain that puts a barrier on what you can do.” It is easy to replace “limiting beliefs” with fear, and in To learn more about Jim and Christiana Herbert and any doing so we reach the same conclusion. Christiana reminded us upcoming Emerging Into Joy workshops, you can log onto www. that our beliefs were instilled in us at a young age, and that we emergingintojoy.com. didn’t necessarily consent to them. From the Heart Why the Holidays Don’t Matter by Alan Cohen For the many years I’ve been writing this column, I conclude each year with an inspirational message about the importance of the holidays. This year I would like to take a different approach. I would like to suggest that the holidays don’t really matter and there is nothing you really need to do about them. Such a suggestion, of course, reads like heresy. “But the holidays do matter!” a voice in your head chides. “They are religiously significant, a season to gather with family, a time to complete the old year and prepare for a new and better one.” Certainly. But try this approach on for size and see how it might fit: The holidays, while fun and significant, drive lots of people crazy. There are pressures to buy the right presents for the right people; obligatory family and office gatherings; commercialism up the wazoo; running up credit card debt; pregnant women trampled to death by Black Friday shoppers rampaging the superstore at 5 AM; hassling with companies that don’t ship presents on time; traffic and travel gluts; fielding invasive questions from obnoxious relatives and co-workers about your relationship status; fighting over whether the kids are going to stay with mom or dad; and on and on. Thus the season of cheer becomes the season of stress. If your holidays have become more and more work and less and less fun, this year don’t do anything for the holidays that grates against your soul. Don’t do anything because you are supposed to. Or because you always have done it that way. Or because you might disappoint someone if you don’t. Or because you feel guilty. Or because you are afraid. A coaching client told me she had planned to go on a 10-day silent meditation retreat, but she was receiving lots of pressure from her family and friends to cancel. I asked her why she might not go. “I’m afraid I might lose their friendship,” she answered. I replied, “So what you are saying is that you have lots of dysfunctional relationships in which other people selfishly want you to live the life they would choose for you to meet their own neurotic needs, and they want you to sacrifice your joy so they can feel secure in their own little controlling world… And you are afraid of losing such demeaning relationships?” She had to laugh. I was dramatizing the situation, but not by much. Real relationship empowers everyone involved to be more of who they are and to follow their joy. If your holiday 12 Conscious Community --DECEMBER 2015

relationships fall into that category, they are truly serving you. If people are pressuring you to do what they want you to do, or your inner critic is beating you up for not making someone else happy, you could make this the best holiday season of your life by letting go of everything that is dysfunctional and embracing only what brings you peace. We are told that the three wise men followed a star to the Christ child in Bethlehem. The wise men represent the highest use of body, mind, and emotion. The star is the guidance of your soul. The Christ child is your true self. When you follow your inner peace, you are led to the Christ. When you burn the flame of your soul, you light a menorah that can never flicker. It’s all about finding and fanning your inner light, your only purpose in life. You are an eternal being who lives beyond time. You are greater than any cycles that occur in form. Jesus was born on Christmas, but the Christ is eternal. The miracle of Hanukah occurred a long time ago, but there are new miracles, and many given each day. And why would a New Year’s resolution be any more important or powerful than any affirmation you would declare on any other day of the year? A Course in Miracles tells us that the only purpose of time is to learn to make the best use of it. This year make the holidays your own. Do what is uplifting to your soul and release all else. Your primary responsibility is to your spirit. My friend Angela loves Christmas trees. Last year she put up 27 Christmas trees in and around her home. For her, the ritual is holy. She is making the most of her season. Others would rather not go to one party. For them, staying home is holy. The holidays are holy not for anything we do, but for the consciousness we bring to our acts. This year choose your activities consciously. Be where you want to be, not where you should be. Be with the people you want to be with. Wipe the slate clean of history, tradition, rules, and expectations, and make each day your own. Start a new tradition of soul honoring. Other people can legislate rituals, but only you can—and must— legislate your consciousness. Let joy be your compass. “Holiday” means “holy day.” Every day is holy. The sacred abides with you at every moment, everywhere you are. It is in you. You carry it with you. You are swimming in a sea of blessedness at all times. If you are going to celebrate anything this holiday season, celebrate the light in you and around you at all times. Then the angels will truly sing.

ASTROLOGY BASICS 101 Decoding Astrology by Kaye Berjot Questions: In a little under a year and a half, I have touched upon a vast number of topics. I started out with beginning astrology, and before you knew it, I was covering more intermediate topics. It’s hard to believe that time has gone by so quickly. This will be the final article in the Astrology Basics 101 series and I would like to cover a topic that I like to call “Decoding.” It’s a term that I use in everyday life and is easily applicable to astrology. That’s because astrology with all of its many iterations is like a code that is only able to be unlocked when you are ready to accept the key. In the very first article, The Sun, Moon, and Ascendant, I wrote about how your birthdate, birth time, and location were essential in astrology. This is because those three components provide a map to give you some idea of what needs to be decoded in your life. Otherwise you would just fly blind, never really knowing which door to walk through to understand what has been kept protected. Every day we are provided with opportunities to unlock certain doors to our individual stories. Sometimes it’s in plain sight like the sun. Sometimes it’s kept hidden like the Ascendant, and other times it only shows up during the night sky.

1.

Where does the decoding process take place?

a. The beginning stages of decoding take place in the 8th house.

2.

Why does decoding take place in the 8th house?

a.

Because that is the house of death and rebirth.

3. Where does the encryption (the process of placing an astrological code) take place? a.

Encryption takes place in the 1st house.

4.

Why does encryption take place in the 1st house?

a. Because the 1st house is the house of self, and who better to protect the message than the self.

So what is decoding and why does it apply to astrology? Decoding is the oldest known way of protecting a message. It has been used throughout time to share information in a safe and undisturbed way.

5. Where do you receive the answers once the message has been decoded? a.

In the 12th house.

As an astrologer, I learn more and more about the subject everyday. What started out as a hobby has over the years transformed into my work. One thing that has always eluded me was the ability to read my own chart. It took time for me to realize that I can and should decode my own chart. What I am saying is that I all have the ability to decode our own messages.

6.

Why receive the message in the 12th house?

Many of us believe that we are not supposed to use these tools to help ourselves. I believe that the tools are given to us to do just that…help ourselves so that we can in turn pay it forward, and help others when the time comes. I’m going to take a different route in this article and move to a question and answer format. I’m doing so because it’s the final article, and it’s almost like a test. I’m a Libra and I like tests.

14 Conscious Community --DECEMBER 2015

a. Because the 12th house is the house of self-undoing, or in other words “self decoding.”

7.

Where does the message get distorted?

a.

In the 3rd house.

8.

Why does the message get distorted in the 3rd house?

a.

Because that is the house of communication.

9. What tells me that a message has been compromised? a.

ON5709THE ROCKS N Clark St. • 773-649-0111

The 6th house.

Gems, Jewelry, and More

10. Why does the 6th house notify me that a message has been distorted? a.

Because it’s the house of health.

11.

Where do I protect my message?

a.

In the 2nd house.

12.

Why am I protecting my messages in the 2nd house?

a.

Because it’s the house of values.

The Shared Heart

New Dimensions of Relationship by Joyce and Barry Vissell

Are You More Important Than your CellPhone? Cell Phones play a very important part in our lives right now. Who knows what 10 years will bring, right now they are almost like an attachment to the person who owns them. Recently I was going to our local gym to swim. I decided to just wait in my car and rest for a bit before walking in. I was parked so that I could see the people entering and leaving. Every single young person under the age of forty walked in while texting. Others a bit older walked in talking on their phone. One remarkably brave soul walked in with no cell phone in hand. Last week we returned from Italy via Washington, DC. At the very long line of passport clearance almost every single person, myself included, were on their cell phones. People buy expensive cases to protect their phones. What happens if a phone announces that its battery is now at 10%? Most people act immediately. No one wants their cell phone to run out of power. A plan is quickly put in place to recharge the battery, no matter how inconvenient. What about us? Are we not more important than our cell phones? Our “batteries” run low as well. Few people are as urgent to charge their own batteries as they are to charge up their cell phone. We push and push ourselves to keep going, and we don’t pay attention to our own battery, or need to be recharged. We know a woman who had no idea how depleted her batteries were. She left for work one morning, collapsed in her front yard, and was rushed to the emergency room. Her diagnosis: exhaustion! Our own wellbeing is vastly more important than our cell phones! When our cell phones are dangerously low, and we can finally plug them into electricity, there is such a good feeling from knowing that we are taking care of our cell phone, and giving it what it needs. We deserve so much more! Our need to recharge and connect to our power is so important. Some people try to ignore the need to be recharged through addictions. This can numb the need for recharging, yet it will never recharge us. Many people watch TV. Your favorite show can be entertaining, yet 16 Conscious Community --DECEMBER 2015

it cannot recharge you. Recharging comes from a true connection to your source of power. Imagine trying to charge your cell phone by showing it your favorite TV show, giving it a beer, or taking it on a long shopping spree. It’s a silly image, and obviously it doesn’t work. The same is true of us. Just as our cell phones need their real connection to electricity, so do we need a real connection to recharge. So how do we recharge? Whatever it takes to connect with Source, God, Divine Love, The Infinite Being, whatever words you use to refer to the higher power, will bring a sense of recharging. These are my favorite ways of connecting. I like to sit outside and look at my garden. While looking at it I like to feel all of the things I am grateful for. The act of gratitude brings an opening of my heart. I also like to work in my garden. Just a small amount of gardening can help to connect me with the earth. I like to lie down on the grass without a blanket under me so that I can have direct contact with the earth. Even lying there for half an hour is like a giant connection back to my source. I like walking our dog Rosie in the woods. I love being alone with Barry and using the time in a quiet way of connecting and feeling our love for one another. I like to pray either alone or with Barry, and feel the closeness of our Creator, and feel that I am loved and being protected. Feeling the spiritual power around me is the most important way that I recharge. Some people like to go to a retreat or special place. It can be important to retreat from the noise of the world and just be with ourselves. Some people get recharged by being creative, writing songs, creating art pieces, singing, or cooking an amazing meal. Some parents find that if they dedicate a longer than usual period of time to just playing with their child, joining their child in their level of play and wonderment of the world, without the use of distracting cell phones, they will feel recharged afterwards. Besides being alone with me, Barry’s favorite way of recharging is to go off into nature and be alone. If it can’t be for days at a time, then even a few hours will work wonders for him.

Sometimes our lives are very busy and we do not have the time to plug into our source of power for a long time. I would like to offer a simple practice that has helped me over the years wherever I am. Sit quietly if you can. This can also be done standing up in a long line. Close your eyes, obviously this will not work while driving. Take in a deep breath and imagine that there is a light coming from your true source of power. Breathe in this light through the top of your head, and feel as if it is coming down into your heart. Then as you breathe out, imagine there is love coming from your heart out into the world, or into whatever situation you find yourselves in. I have used this in busy airports, grocery lines, or sitting quietly in my garden, and each time I feel a sense of being connected and recharged. Let’s strive to keep the battery of our own life operating at a very high level. Tell yourself, “I am more important than my cell phone, and I deserve to be recharged, and to be filled by the true source of my being.”

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS

December…Values, Attitude Adjustments, Party Time!

by Elizabeth Summers Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, deeper issues present themselves in the month of December. On a mundane level, we may be forced to examine our values… “Hey what’s important here? Who is important here?” as we go shopping for that perfect gift. The question becomes … on what value system are you basing your choices? December is the twelfth month of the calendar year and this Number adds down to the Number Three. In Tarot Card interpretation, this is the Empress and that girl loves to shop! She is the mother energy that brings in nurturing, abundance, expressions of tenderness and a focus about working with children. All this energy is so perfect for the Christmas season. A feeling of extravagance and feeling rich illuminates her world. In Astrology, big daddy Jupiter brings this abundance along also with this vibration. Currently traveling through the sign of Virgo, all of us will find sources and resources to bring abundance into our lives. The question still becomes what are your values? Focusing more on the Number Twelve of December, we find ourselves re-visiting this question. In Tarot, the Twelfth card is the Hang Man who is hanging upside-down by one leg on a cross beam and one just knows he is thinking to himself “how on earth did I get myself into this situation!” More deeply, the Hang Man energy is about attitude adjustment through reversals of situations in one’s life often brought about by significant emotional situations about one’s personal value system. As an Esoteric Numerologer studying the ancient viewpoints surrounding Numbers since 1988, it has been found that the Number Twelve represents completion of a full cycle of experiences. The spiritual leaders of old often had to advise their followers to exhibit “a reversal of conduct, requiring different evolving lifestyles for their spiritual growth.” As a Life Path Number, arrived at by adding the month, day and year of birth together, a soul who has chosen this journey has brought significant past life experiences into this current incarnation. Author Faith Javane, in her book MASTER NUMBERS, Cycles of Divine Order offers this explanation. “When individuals enter an incarnation as Number Twelves, they have already had a full cycle of experiences and learned of the possibility of regeneration toward a higher consciousness. They belong to the group of developed souls who have accumulated unusual inner strength through many and varied experiences from many lifetimes in the flesh. However, these people still may be hindered by old habits that need to be changed. Therefore, the soul attracts that which 18 Conscious Community --DECEMBER 2015

it needs as a learning experience. A reversal of negative thoughts can bring about positive effects and aid in achieving ideal goals or aspirations. If challenged, the Number Twelve person’s initial response might be “why me?” Instead, they should think “why not me?” When it comes to prosperity, Twelves usually blame their ill-luck on others rather than on their own selfish thinking. In that case, the Law of Reversal would correct the situation”…an attitude adjustment about their values and self-worth... Number Twelve. For the last couple of years, as Saturn was moving through Scorpio, having now moved forward into Sagittarius, it has been a time to finally face anything we might be running from and to be wholly transformed by the experience. Thus, once again, the Hang Man and the Number Twelve brings the “turn-about” energy into play, especially in December. As we all do our work in spiritual development, the justice of the Universe steps in with the higher vibration of the Number Three and that is the World Card in ancient Tarot. This Number TwentyOne adding to the happy energy of the Three, brings a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment and involvement. Now it is ‘party time!” By re-setting our “values thermostat” we can better bring all the parts of our lives together, achieve dynamic balance and work in unison with our fellow men. This growth of spirit helps us to realize our goals, achieve our heart’s desires, see dreams come true, and step into a life experience of flourishing and prosperity. In this season of giving, give of yourself. Use your gifts and talents to bring “heart energy” to others. Share what you have, render service, feel engaged, be active and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with this value of personal satisfaction. Perhaps Bertrand Russell V. Delong put it best… “The most valuable things in life are not measured in monetary terms. The really important things are not houses and lands, stocks and bonds, automobiles and real estate but friendships, trust, confidence, empathy, mercy, love and faith”. To all those folks kind enough to read my column, know that I send you God’s White Light, his Peace and his Harmony and know I wish you all good things always. Spiritually guiding clients since 1988, Elizabeth Summers provides practical information by combining Numerology, Astrology and Tarot interpretations in her personal readings. Looking at ourselves…what is it all about? The oracle of Delphi’s famous saying “Know thyself” comes to mind. So how do we know ourselves, without constantly analyzing, being hyper aware and critical of ourselves in the process? The notion of self-love can be taken to extremes in either direction; whether it’s narcissism, or self-loathing. Regardless, it is still an issue of the ego, whether it’s amped up to no end, or it has been beaten into the ground, and self-esteem is deficient. So how do we really know ourselves without the proverbial horse blinders? How do we develop a clear filter to watch our lives unfold while at the same time having self-knowledge? While living in a society, we have to consider the many standards we are bombarded with on a daily basis, and are they truly our own goals? When looking at ourselves, most of us tend to compare ourselves to others, to their achievements, their standards, which may not always fit in with who we really are, or where we wish to go. To discriminate between these two very different worlds is key, for we get caught up in a web of illusion, of societal expectations and standards, and often, if we do not fit in, we feel inadequate, insecure, even unworthy. So how do we attain an objective enough self-image, especially when it comes to body image, the physical? To celebrate our uniqueness is a beautiful thing, and we mustn’t forget that we were all made to be unique individuals, with very specific constitutions and body types. If everyone looked the same, what would we have? A world filled with pawn-like people? We should always remember how special we are in our own bodies, and never try to emulate another’s, because that is simply who they are. Admiration vs envy is a noble thing to strive for and feel, because envy leads to many other negative emotions, jealousy, comparison, and ultimately, suffering. To be comfortable in our own skin seems cliché, yet is so fitting here. Of course, it is easier said than done, and we’ve heard it so many times, it seems overlooked. To be comfortable in your own skin is the path to recognition and self-love. Recognizing your own unique divine temple we call the body is to see who you are as a whole, for your body is part of you, your vehicle, which gets mistreated so much of the time. Our bodies have intelligence, our muscles hold memories, and, as kinesiology shows us, many different emotional responses. It has a meaningful story to tell us, and to mistreat it or push it to where it does not wish to go is simply torment for the body. Why is it so hard to love ourselves and our bodies? What beliefs from society or parental programming have we bought into? Why do we feel this way? It is valuable to look for these beliefs, find them and see where they come from, and dismantle them. Most of them come

from childhood, when we unconsciously adopted them. It is easy to be programmed as a child, and as innocent as we were, we took them on as our own. Now we struggle with their conflicting nature, for deep inside, we know they are not real, not true. We struggle, because we are not true to ourselves, and we have lost touch with that primordial part of us that knows the ultimate truth of our nature. One of the main signals that we are on our way to enlightenment is to be able to discriminate between our own thoughts/beliefs, and those that belong to others and society, those that were simply imprinted in us as we grew up, and even currently as we are. The complexities of the psyche multiply, and as we evolve, there is no ceasing it. However, we can work on our own belief systems; and begin to analyze whether they make us happy; they fit in with who we are; or not. If they do not, they should be discarded. If they fit in, then we can keep them. A lot of “housecleaning” must be done, as we do not allow others to take charge of our mental and emotional space; it is our own to maintain and watch over. This is one of the toughest things to do, as we are bombarded daily by media, television, advertising, etc. Another thing to consider is whether we are overly concerned with body image, or if we have a healthy relationship with it. Regardless of whether we are overly critical of it, or too infatuated with it, it still remains a matter of the ego. The healthiest way to approach it is through balance, through understanding that we are a lot more than just our bodies, and that we have to work on the entirety of our spirits, not just our physical selves. The human condition can be difficult to pacify, for it has many layers; however, the dance continues, and we sometimes have to learn to fit all of our pieces into a beautiful puzzle that makes us who we are. Sound Matters: by Steven Halpern

Music, Magic, and Goosebumps at the CMA’s with Justin Timberlake and Chris Stapleton Something truly amazing, awesome, and uplifting occurred during the CMA (Country Music Awards) on November 4th. If you watched the broadcast, you know what I’m talking about. If you didn’t, you’ll want to check out the video on YouTube. Even if you saw it that night, after reading some of my comments, you’ll want to check it out again.

A New Age Musician Watching the CMA’s? Why would a New Age musician watch the Country Music Awards? First and foremost, I’m a musician. Past shows have usually included some great performances (I know I’ll have to put up with a number of performances I’d rather not sit through), and I love watching great musicians stretching out, really playing, not just duplicating what is on the recording of their hit song. From the brain science I’ve studied, I also know that even one truly enjoyable performance will allow my brain to flood my body with endorphins, the neuro-hormones of bliss and well-being. From my teachers, I’ve learned to accept a serendipitous, spontaneous healing whenever I can, without limiting the source. Have you ever had a peak experience watching a musical performance on TV, where you shift into an altered state of consciousness without any additional stimulants or herbal supplements? I know I have. Fantasia’s finale on American Idol provided one of those moments, which I immediately featured in my next column. Whitney Houston’s high falsetto note at the end of her electrifying “Star Spangled Banner” provided another. From my study of Ethno-Musicology (thank you Marcus Gordon), and comparative mythology (thank you Jack Clarke, Joseph Campbell, and Jean Houston), I know there is a cultural context for the ceremonial and spiritual uses of music, going back to the Rites of Eleusis in ancient Greece. Ads for the broadcast promoted several “one-time only” collaborations. One of these featured Justin Timberlake and Chris Stapleton, an artist I had never heard of, and neither had most of America.

That was about to change, Chris had just won “Best New Artist.” Now I knew why.

Witnessing Musicians Totally in the Moment Co-host Brad Paisley introduced them as “the Nashville sound meets Memphis soul.” From their first notes, I knew this was a profound sound experience. Justin Timberlake and Chris Stapleton got down on a steamy medley of Chris’s “Tennessee Whiskey,” and Justin’s “Drink You Away,” neither of which I was familiar with. The performance was one for the ages. The singers were totally in sync with each other (pun intended), and with the audience. The music was bluesier than I would have expected. Words barely suffice. No matter how you describe it: “Awesome!” “It brought the house down.” First Chris, then Justin demonstrated levels of vocal virtuosity that was simply breathtaking. Together with the incredible band, they tore the roof off. When the two singers traded phrases, that level of connection and non-verbal communication took the music even higher. You could see the joy and amazement on their faces, too. It was clear to me that this was truly ‘in the moment’, unscripted, more than any prior recorded version. At one point, you can hear the organ player echoing Justin’s incredible falsetto, using the classic gospel organ tone settings. The cutaways to various audience members made it clear they were totally enthralled as well. Watch the eye contact between Justin and Chris; between the bass player and Justin; and the horn section with everyone. (As a former trumpet player, they were a joy to watch, too.) All in all, this electrifying performance orchestrated a magic moment for (I’d like to say, or hope) all of us who watched it happen live, and through the magic of YouTube, we can experience it again and again.

Flashback: November 1969

Thank you to Justin, Chris, their band, and the entire team that produced the event. The sound quality that I heard as I listened at home was superb, among the best ever, such as at the Grammys and the Oscars.

I also flashed back on my own journey through music and spirituality. In November of 1969, I was preparing to enter a graduate program focusing on “The Cross-Cultural and Transformative Powers of Music.” I was planning a field trip to Morocco after interviewing William S. Burroughs, who told me I needed to visit the Master Musicians of Jajouka.

I wondered if Justin and Chris knew some of what I reference in the next section. As if on cue from the universe, as I was finishing this column, I knocked over a file folder of “interviews and music articles to read when I have time,” which I had never had time to read.

That was my plan, until a half-fare ticket landed in my lap on the night of November 10. I was on the 8 AM flight to San Francisco the next morning, 11/11/69. The return flight was scheduled to get me home to play a Thanksgiving gig with my 8-piece jazz-rock band.

Out pops an interview with Justin from a four-year-old Playboy magazine that answered part of my question. He was raised as a Baptist, where singing like this is central to Sunday morning services (though with quite different lyrics). He also says: “As a musician, I’ve worked my ass off. The toughest thing a performer can do is to make it look as if it comes easy.”

All that changed in an instant 10 days later, during an unexpected meditation in a sacred redwood grove outside of Santa Cruz, California. That was when I first really “heard” the celestial sound of the new music I’ve devoted my life to. I recognized my true calling, as I was initiated into what I understood as a ministry of sound healing and healing music.

The Ethno-Musicology Perspective There was much more going on, however, than meets the untrained eye, or ear. To begin with, Justin’s song featured the sensual rhythm of a slow 6/8 beat that had the audience rocking and swaying in rhythm. The effect of this rhythm is quite different than the standard 4/4 rhythms. According to leading researchers like Morton Marks and Claude Levi-Strauss, whose books reside mostly in academic circles, performances like these contain another level of signifiers. For instance, the use of falsetto in this context is more than just a vocal technique for reaching high notes. It conveys a secret code and signal for those who know the language, and cues to understand that the energy level had just undergone a significant shift into a higher octave. Times like these remind me of what Carlos Castaneda was told by his teacher, Yaqui man of knowledge Don Juan Matus: “When the Absolute is present, it’s there for everyone.” Don Juan, of course, was talking about Mescalito, who would appear in sacred peyote ceremonies, showing the same form to all in attendance. Everyone shared the same vision. A big difference: Alcohol was the drug of choice for Justin and Chris. The same phenomenon of collective consciousness is reported to have occurred yearly at the Rites of Eleusis in ancient Greece, catalyzed by a psychoactive fungus that grew on rye. (We do not have details, since attendees would be killed if they shared what transpired.) I believe something on that order took place on the CMA stage: Contemporary musician/priests taking us higher, into closer connection with the divine. If you know the true history of music, in ancient Egypt, Greece, and China, musicians were priests, and priests were musicians.

A final note: I’ve watched the performance on several different platforms. I can tell you that you’ll be missing a lot of aural pleasure and endorphin rush if your speakers are not very good. This might be an excellent rationale or inducement to treat yourself to external speakers (like the new one-piece soundbars) for your TV, or better speakers or headphones for your computer or player. It doesn’t need to be loud, but if your sound system can’t deliver the full spectrum of frequencies, especially the low and high octaves, you’ll be missing out. Be good to yourself. I’ll admit: during my low-budget college years, I had such a crappy little stereo that I didn’t even realize how much I was missing. That was also why I was known to have chosen a roommate or two based on the quality of his stereo. Honor your Self with good sound this next year, but why wait? Start now.

CyberWeave: Spirituality and the Internet by Mary Montgomery

Getting to the Heart of Love This month’s column was inspired by an email I received from huffingtonpost.com’s Arts & Culture section. The November 8, 2015 article, “A Brief History Of The Heart Symbol” by Maddie Crum was written in response to Twitter’s decision to dump its star icon (used to convey “I like this,” “I agree,” or “thanks”) in favor of a red heart emoji.

Gloria Steinem’s theory that the heart replicates the curves of a womanly figure, the source of erotic love.

#Emoji rage has erupted since Twitter’s announcement complete with a wide range of comments including: “I’m not sure I’m ready for that level of commitment. I mean, there’s a lot of real estate between like and love.” — Edward Fitzpatrick, providencejournal.com

Hmm…I’m of two minds on all this. On the one hand, the world needs as much love as it can get—even if it’s only symbolic. After all, isn’t this the Holiday Season where we are encouraged to extend peace and love to our fellow beings?

“Serious news about terrible events calls for a system of language (including visual language) which reflects the gravity or complexity of any given situation. One cannot for instance “love” the latest Nasa report on polar ice density, or profess amorous adulation for the news that the Metrojet aircraft which crashed in the Sinai might have been targeted by terrorists. The tiny red heart reveals that Twitter does not want us to talk about unpleasant things…”— Emily Bell, theguardian.com On the very same day that Twitter made its announcement, Adam Clark Estes from gizmodo.com published this article for the disgruntled: “How to Replace Twitter’s Dumb Heart With the Emoji of Your Choice.” Now, to people like me who aren’t big Twitter users, this could seem like a tempest in a teapot. However, I’m thinking that Crum has a point when she observes that this change may result in a weakening of the power that this symbol of love carries. That weakening can even be seen in Twitter’s tweet about the change:

“♥=yes! ♥=congrats! ♥=LOL ♥=adores ♥=stay strong ♥=wow ♥=hugs ♥=aww ♥=high five.” Crum’s brief history reveals that the heart symbol wasn’t around as a metaphor for love until the mid-13th century, and was popularized in the 16th century. She points out that theories abound, including the idea that the heart symbol comes from its resemblance to the leaves of a plant once used as makeshift contraceptive pills, and 22 Conscious Community --DECEMBER 2015

For Crum, this eases the pain of Twitter’s decision since “when it comes to the Twitter change, if your heart’s not in it, remember that historically speaking, the symbol is interpretable.”

On the other hand, Twitter’s decision is reinforcing the tendency of English language speakers, particularly Americans, to LOVE everything, from God to significant others; children; pets; their favorite ice cream; that dream car; to that cute black number in the department store window. I believe Edward Fitzpatrick, the Providence Journal columnist had a great idea when he suggested that Twitter could borrow a page from ancient Greece, and offer us four different types of love: agape, eros, philia or phileo, and storge. Agape (unconditional love), Eros (romantic love), Phileo (enjoyment, fondness, friendship), Storge (family loyalty). With that in mind, I thought I’d check out whether there were any interesting websites devoted to these four types of love. My first surprise was finding an article at yesmagazine.org that explored six Greek words for love. But wait! The article doesn’t even mention storge, which is the love of parents for their offspring. That must mean that those Greeks must have had at least seven words for love! I have to say that the Yes Magazine article, “The Ancient Greeks’ 6 Words for Love (And Why Knowing Them Can Change your Life),” by Roman Krznaric is worth reading. (Check it out at yesmagazine.org/happiness/the-ancient-greeks-6-words-for-loveand-why-knowing-them-can-change-your-life.) Krznaric believes that we can learn from the diverse forms of emotional attachment prized by the ancient Greeks. Here are thumbnail summaries of his exploration of these six forms of love:

Eros: Named after the Greek god of fertility, eros represented the

idea of sexual passion and desire. Eros involved a loss of control that frightened the Greeks. Krznaric points out that for us modern folks losing control is precisely what many people now seek in a relationship. We need to reconsider that.

Philia: The Greeks valued philia or friendship far more than

eros. Philia is about deep comradely friendship and about showing loyalty to your friends. Krznaric states that we moderns can all ask ourselves how much of this comradely philia we have in our lives, especially in an age where we are busy amassing “friends” on Facebook or “followers” on Twitter.

Ludus: Ludus was the Greeks’ idea of playful love, which referred to the affection between children or young lovers. It can include flirting and teasing. It can also include sitting around bantering and laughing with friends. Krznaric notes that we could all use more of this adult frivolity in our lives. Agape: Selfless love is agape. It is love that is extended to all people, whether family members or distant strangers. In Latin, agape was translated as caritas, which is the origin of our word “charity.” Krznaric notes that empathy levels in the U.S. have declined sharply over the last 40 years. This means there has been a dangerous decline in agape, a trend that we urgently need to reverse by reviving our capacity to care about strangers.

It is Krznaric (romankrznaric.com), an Australian cultural thinker and cofounder of The School of Life in London (theschooloflife. com/london/) that provides some final food for thought: “It’s time we introduced the six varieties of Greek love into our everyday way of speaking and thinking. If the art of coffee deserves its own sophisticated vocabulary, then why not the art of love?”

My Advice: Maybe like me you desire to bring more love into

your life. Let’s use this whole Twitter Love Emoji controversy as a springboard to figuring out how to bring more love into our lives and the lives of others by expanding our horizons to encompass the many nuances and varieties of love—just like the Greeks did. You can also visit her at her new blog, SpiritualTravelerGuides.com.

Pragma: This is longstanding love, like the deep understanding that develops between long-married couples. Pragma is about making compromises to help the relationship work over time, and showing patience and tolerance. Krznaric believes we moderns should heed the words of psychoanalyst Erich Fromm who said that we expend too much energy on “falling in love” and need to learn more how to “stand in love.” We need to focus on developing pragma in our lives. Philautia: Philautia is the love of self, which can either be

healthy or unhealthy (narcissism). The idea of philautia, according to Krznaric, is that if you like yourself and feel secure in yourself, you will have plenty of love to give others. Krznaric didn’t state how philautia should be used today. However, I found another website that did: The Wellbeing Center (wellbeingcenter.com/thebeauty-of-self-love/). Nicole’s advice is to practice philautia by giving yourself a little SPA time. In this case, SPA means:

S…set aside time…Do you set aside time to do something simple and small, daily, that you love?

P…praise yourself!...Learned something new? Discovered

something novel? Transformed a piece of your life? Reached a life goal? Make sure you give yourself a little praise: you deserve it.

A…affirmations…Think of the beautiful human you want to become…call to mind their qualities, the feel of their life. Now, create a sentence, maybe two, that would come out of that beautiful human’s mouth. “I am beautiful…” Conscious Community - www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 23

“Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer; But I’m not the only one. I hope some day you’ll join us. And the world will live as one.” Imagine, John Lennon Mir. Pokoj. Kapayapaan. Shalom. Frieden. Shanti. Pace. Salaam. Sülh. Heiwa. Paix. Tinchlik. Peace by any other name is still as sweet! It’s as sweet as feeling carefree and as gratifying as a joyful occasion with friends. Mother Teresa said, “Peace begins with a smile.” During this late autumn season I’ve been compelled to write about peace. I’m not a diplomat and I don’t have a magic bullet for world peace. I only know that every day I must work toward more peace in my inner life and my outer life. If I’m not careful, sometimes I pour too much of the wrong energy into activities and create strong emotions and useless suffering. So every day I work on myself, I practice yoga asanas and meditation, and I intentionally cultivate my relationships. “I transform the garbage in myself So that you do not have to suffer.” Inter-relationship, Thich Nhat Hanh The Engaged Buddhism movement encourages meditators to bring the fruits of their personal practice out into the world for the benefit of others, usually toward social justices. It’s similar to the yogic concept of doing one’s work with attention and care, yet remaining detached from turmoil the world often produces along the way. Yoga also shares the same sentiment found in the famous song heard this time of year by Sy Miller and Jill Jackson, “Let There Be Peace on Earth, and Let It Begin with Me.” “Go placidly amid the noise and haste, And remember what peace there may be in silence... Whatever your labors and aspirations, In the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.” Desiderata, Max Ehrmann 24 Conscious Community -DECEMBER 2015

Yoga teaches that our personal meditation practice is the most important enterprise toward the pursuit of Peace on Earth. We have an inner world and an outer world. We can bridge the two worlds and bring our inner peace outward as we interact with the world if we pledge to work toward that end. Further, yoga specifies self-regulations, which will reward time spent in meditation. Yoga’s codes of self-regulation involve our actions in the outer world where we live and connect with others. Of the Eight Limbs of Yoga, or Ashtanga, the five yamas make the first limb. They are: 1. Ahimsa, non-violence. At all times to endeavor to be non-harming in thoughts, action and speech. No blaming self or others unnecessarily and no foul language. 2. Satya, truthfulness. It’s honesty without exaggeration or intention to harm with words. 3. Asteya, non-stealing. It’s also non-desire for what isn’t ours, or for more than we need. 4. Brahmacharya, either celibacy or loving sexuality within a committed relationship. 5. Aparigraha, non-attachment, non-indulgence, and not wishing for unattainable worldly objects. The yamas are necessary first steps in purification for all serious yoga students. They help us gain control over our inner worlds, our emotional lives and our relationships. They teach us how to begin cultivating inner peace in order to create a more peaceful world. “Once we have this inner peace, world peace can be achieved in the twinkling of an eye... So when we have inner peace, automatically it expresses itself. It spreads its qualities throughout the length and breadth of the world.” Sri Chinmoy When I lose sight of my inner peace, I try to pay attention and make adjustments, moving from fear and hurtful habits towards greater wisdom. I contemplate why I bear harsh feelings and try to adapt them into something productive. If I root out causes, I often move through forgiveness of myself and of others. So if I can change my thoughts before I speak, usually with the help of

deep breathing, I’m usually pretty good at decompressing and controlling outcomes. I feel we must practice inner peace daily, not merely as hope for some future time. We must begin today and pledge our diligence so we may realize peace as soon as possible everywhere.

“Dear Peace Lovers Around the World, When you hold silent meditation prayers to commemorate those who have died or suffered in terrorism violence, do not forget to offer a prayer for the terrorists.

Practicing Peace Always Maintain a Joyful Mind

May God grant them Sat-Buddhi (re-awakening of their wisdom) so that they may change their paths. This is the only antidote to terrorism.” Swami Veda Bharati During the third week of December, the Winter Solstice brings the seasonal symbol of the returning sun with increased daylight hours. May the return of greater sunshine illuminate the way for peace in each and every life, every day. “We live in hope of deliverance from the darkness that surrounds us.”

BURNING BOWL CEREMONY - 6:30pm $10 The Burning Bowl ceremony is a traditional ritual of release and letting go of what does not serve us now. The equinox, solstice and New Year all present opportunities for renewal and releasing everything in your life that is holding you back; especially negative thoughts and emotions, bad habits, unhealthy relationships, old hurts, grudges and regrets -- anything that burdens your mind. Ask yourself these questions: What do I want cleansed? What do I want to give up? What do I want gone from my life? The Burning Bowl ceremony is also known as the Phoenix Ceremony. It is about letting go, but it is also about rising from the ashes, renewed as the Phoenix. Join us in this powerful celebration of letting go and rising renewed. COSMIC DAILY WEATHER December 2015

December 2015 Overview Imagine a delicate, lacey, shimmering veil that vibrates with light and sound and beautiful geometric patterns. Imagine that reality arises from this subtle veil as a field of vital energy. Now imagine that whatever does not harmonize with this field is a distortion, an illusion that we are fooled into thinking is real. That vibrating field is the basic ground of life. This field is being lit up by high-charged cosmic input. Reality as we have known it is being rearranged. We may be afraid we are losing our minds. That may be a good thing if our hearts are opening. As false illusions are dissolved, the truth of who we are will shine forth. Venus moves into passionate Scorpio on the 5th and adventurous Sagittarius on the 30th. Mars in Libra triggers the intense Uranus-Pluto dynamic. Volatile and disturbing activity stimulates the global agenda for transformation. Some folks are grumpy or downright nasty. The Sun enters Capricorn on the 22nd, as we celebrate Solstice and accompanying assorted holy days. A Full Moon on Christmas day highlights the hosanna of angels and the birth of the coming year. Uranus signals its holiday celebration by turning direct, further stimulating our consciousness awakening. NEW MOON —December 11 at 19 Sagittarius FULL MOON —December 25 at 3 Capricorn-Cancer

Tuesday, December 1 A Leo Moon starts the month on a heart-filled note, with creative verve that gives us inspiration and motivation to act on our visions. Set your sights on the brightest light and share the excitement that is in the air today. The Moon goes Void of Course at 9:09pm, with good feelings to share. This is a great date night, one to spend with loved ones and to envision your plans for the future. Encourage each other to your best.

Wednesday, December 2 The Moon enters pragmatic Virgo at 4:09am, to begin a busy bee day during which we can get a lot done, one task at a time. Take full advantage of this practical mood, which lasts until early evening, at which time we are likely to run out of steam and need a rest. Don’t be discouraged by what you did not accomplish. things worked out and some didn’t. Feel good about what you did get done, even if it’s not quite what you had planned on. What did happen and what you did learn is more important in the long run.

Thursday, December 3 Attend to unfinished business from yesterday. Something from your list or something that comes up may feel really important. Give it your best. In one way or another you get back what you give. We’re all in this together. Into the evening you may need to clarify some misunderstanding or misinformation. Take a break from the small stuff to get an overview. How are all the pieces coming together? A few tweaks may be in order. Overall, though, by the time the Moon goes Void of Course at 10:59pm, most of us feel a level of satisfaction.

Friday, December 4 There is likely to be glitch in the morning that requires attention. Again, it could be a communication issue or some skipped step. Schedules may need to be rearranged. Once we attend to this, we can appreciate how smoothly things are moving forward. It’s a true TGIF kind of day. The Moon changes into Libra at 4:34pm, indicating social hour. Venus enters Scorpio at 10:15pm, deepening the tone in relationships. What do you desire, deeply and truly?

Saturday, December 5 The Moon in Libra is strengthening cooperation and collaboration. By the end of the day, decisions are made, and some are even implemented. This may imply significant breakthroughs and transformations. On a different wavelength, there is unrest in some quarters, which may break out in nasty ways. Be alert for trouble and stay clear.

Sunday, December 6 Unsettledness and disturbances continue today, with potential for further breakthroughs as well. Something’s got to give somewhere. This may or may not be a personal issue to you, but may have the kind of global impact that affects us all. It certainly gives us something to talk about, even as the Moon goes Void of Course at 8:03pm.

Monday, December 7 The Moon enters Scorpio at 5:26am, meeting up with Venus today for strong emotional impact. Feelings are all or nothing with this combination, likely to bring people together in powerful ways. Hanukkah begins today. It’s also Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, International Civil Aviation Day and Cotton Candy Day. That sweet sticky stuff was originally called fairy floss. I prefer that! What are you celebrating today? As for me, well, it’s my birthday!

Tuesday, December 8 Powerful forces are at work under the surface on many levels. Are you feeling it? Alchemical, subatomic, transformational, inside-out impacts ripple through the field. Some of these undercurrents will arise into surprises in the evening. Reports of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions would not be a surprise. What is ever so ready for change in your life? Don’t dwell on the negative. Gather all the powerful positive feelings you can to invite the best possible outcomes. Test out that Law of Attraction in your life. If we can imagine it, it can happen. Put your heart muscle into it.

leaving us with many questions about how to sort out some of the chaos in the midst of change. In a Greek creation myth, divine Eros, the god of love, emerges from the heart of chaos with Gaia, Earth, uniting Heaven and Earth. This is the renaissance we are experiencing.

Saturday, December 12 The Moon enters take-charge Capricorn at 12:47am. At the start of the day, be on board to think through plans, to harness cooperation and the will-power to drive them into manifestation. We might start to get inklings about our new year’s outline—and resolutions. Don’t be too narrow in your vision—let your imagination soar. We want to be inspired, not overwhelmed. What kind of world are you dreaming of? Start there and sketch it out.

Sunday, December 13

Wednesday, December 9 The Moon is Void of Course from 12:39am, through the day until 4:25pm when it enters enthusiastic Sagittarius. This gives plenty of time for things to arrange themselves in order to bring positive results. Stay with the positive, that’s the test. Don’t fall into despair or doubt or any such feelings that undermine the glow. This is a deep piece of work, and a potent one. Results will follow at the right time. Mercury moves into practical-minded Capricorn at 8:35pm, indicating it’s time to think out a plan to manifest the best outcome.

Today is the key Earth-power day for this month, as the Moon aligns with Pluto’s subterranean depths. Volcanoes are likely to erupt, along with other globe-rocking events. Take care and be alert. Attend to those things that need to change in your life and cooperate with the forces that foster wellbeing. When the Moon goes Void of Course at 5:07pm, we are called to honor Nature’s wisdom through the night. Are we dreaming the Earth or is the Earth dreaming us?

Monday, December 14 The Moon heads into socializing Aquarius at 6:59am, turning on the social media buzz for the week. What do you, what can you believe of all the hype and spin? Don’t get spun out or overwhelmed yourself. Listen to your heart for what rings true to you and proceed accordingly. Turn off the television for static-free access to your inner guidance. Whose story are you living?

Thursday, December 10

Tuesday, December 15

The fiery Sagittarius Moon is motivating and energizing. It might take part of the morning, though, to get our engines going. Be ready by mid-morning when a situation may call you into action. Get your goals set for tomorrow’s New Moon and fuel them with enthusiasm and confidence, taking into consideration any steps that need to be taken now. Don’t put the cart before the horse, as they say, or you are likely to trip over your feet. Take extra care this evening when there is an accident-prone combination of planets.

Differing opinions about what is right likely stem from conflicting values. Take a second look at any cause you are being asked to support. What is the motivation beneath the surface? Follow the money, as they say, and beware of manipulative tendencies that strong-arm today’s action. Keep a candle burning in your inner temple, so that you are aware of any tendencies to undermine yourself or others. We may need to work through some inner turmoil to hear what another person is saying. The energy frees up this afternoon for greater understanding and agreements to be made.

Friday, December 11

Wednesday, December 16

NEW MOON at 4:29am CST, 19 Sagittarius 03 Full of promise, this New Moon is action-oriented, fueled with fireworks. Some are the celebratory sparkling kind, but some may signal disaster with the crashing of old systems and structures. Remember that dis-aster means “against the stars,” so stay in tune with the cosmic harmonies. Limiting belief systems may be challenged. Such old structures are falling apart like the Tower card in the Tarot deck. The Earth may make its voice heard in unmistakable ways to remind us that we can’t control Nature. The Moon is Void of Course most of the day, starting at 10:06am,

The buzz starts to calm down when the Moon goes Void of Course at 1:17am, with some lingering news of interest, some to dream upon. The Moon enters fluid Pisces at 11:45am, to color the day with pastel hues. Relax and go with the flow as fully as you can. Breathe deeply to release tension, realizing you may be picking up on the surrounding gestalt or someone else’s vibes. Be gentle with yourself and others. Dreamtime calls early tonight. Drift off to good music, not harsh sounds. You want pleasant dreams, don’t you?

Thursday, December 17

Tuesday, December 22

The day may start off rather dicey, depending on how well you slept, but smoothes out before too long. Feelings are deep and wide, like a river. Don’t rush and don’t push the river. Make it easier for yourself and others by setting strong boundaries and maintaining clear communication. Remain grounded. Much can be accomplished with lucid priorities and a simple agenda, along with a smile, good will and mutual appreciation.

A Void of Course Moon starting at 8:26am may be more productive than most, with all the earth signs occupied and encouraging productive activity in advance of holiday vacations. The Moon doesn’t change into restless Gemini until 8:31pm, at which time our attention is out the door and on to other things. Change it up.

Friday, December 18

A few loose ends this morning confuse the issues, but we’re necessarily back in focus by the afternoon. Energy and people are moving around like chess pieces. Make sure you’re moving in the right direction and have what you need with you. Be vigilant and maintain the crystal clarity of your energy field.

A wave of overwhelm may create some anxiety, but that wave will pass unless you let yourself get caught up in it. The Moon is Void of Course at 9:14am, with a call to maintain your enthusiasm and faith. Keep your eye on the goal. The Moon enters impulsive Aries at 3:26pm, resetting the mood of the day with more pizzazz. The workday ends on a fresh note. Plan something unusual for the evening and the weekend. Be open to new and unusual suggestions.

Saturday, December 19 This rather wild weekend will yield some powerful news, probably of comings and goings on the world stage and upsets in the world of sports. In other words, it’s a game-changer of a day! What’s your game and how is it changing? Don’t be caught by surprise. Expect—and welcome—the unexpected.

Sunday, December 20 The wild winds of change continue to blow strong today, challenging the status quo beyond its crusty limits and stretching the polarity of opinions. We are just not going to see eye to eye with some folks. Choices follow. We may think things have smoothed out when the Moon goes Void of Course at 4:01pm, but there’s yet another surprise by end of day after the Moon enters resourceful Taurus at 6:13pm.

CAPRICORN, the SEA GOAT

Wednesday, December 23

Thursday, December 24 Enjoy this day! Don’t overdo things in a way that adds any stress. It doesn’t need to be there. In this highly social season, be open to sharing the cheer with anyone you encounter that has good vibes. Synchronicities and serendipities strike here, there and everywhere. The Moon is Void of Course as of 2:04pm. Keep on track to get where you’re going. If you are already there, enjoy conversations without letting your buttons get pushed. Rather quietly disengage and withdraw if you need to. No need to exacerbate tempers. Find ways to help out instead. “Many hands make light work.” Kindness is a gift in itself. The Moon enters the giving sign of Cancer at 11:26pm.

Friday, December 25 FULL MOON at 5:12am CST, at 3 Capricorn-CANCER 20 A holiday Full Moon is always special. This one has a sweet, cozy feel, but not the sticky sweet and sentimental kind. There is a practical base that doesn’t overflow with consumerism, but cautions care, consideration and conservation of resources. “Tis a gift to be simple,” as the Shakers sing. Consider, for instance, the company you keep. There is no dire need to display any

missionary verve or try to convince anybody of anything, unlike politicians and advertisers. Don’t fall for the hype. Make your holiday true to the spirit of why we celebrate, from the heart. Uranus turns forward at 9:53pm, sending shimmering electric sparkles through the atmospheres, like cosmic confetti. As this “dust” settles, address any uncomfortable undercurrents in a spirit of reconciliation.

Saturday, December 26 Be alert to join the refreshing revolutionary initiatives of Uranus. Welcome insights from the higher mind—all that sparkling light that is coming in! There is heightened electricity in the air. Are you ready to wake up even more from the dream of illusion? From the ground up, the Earth responds literally within the great electromagnetic feedback loop from outer space. Inevitably, some people are just going to be disagreeable and unreasonable. State your case as you see fit. The Moon enters its Void of Course at 9:36pm, with deep sweet loving energy, like the mythic Soma, the elixir of life that is the sweetest, empowerment drink you ever tasted. Drink deeply and savor.

Sunday, December 27 The Moon enters playful Leo at 4:31am, encouraging a Sunday fun and creativity. Head off to the movies, bowling, or whatever is a happy way to spend the day with people you love. Children are a key focus, including your inner child! There is an open energy today that allows the space to let things happen delightfully, with just enough planning and arranging so things go well. Just don’t make it a “have to” sort of thing. That’s not fun! Some people are just plain grumpy and won’t play. How much do you need to accommodate them? It’s a delicate question in some cases.

Wednesday, December 30 Venus changes into Sagittarius at 1:17am, with an adventurous heart. We really did work through something yesterday. Dreams are strong. Some are nurturing, allowing your body to deeply relax; others may express underlying anxieties. Take some steps today and in the coming week to relieve your stress level. It’s time, and you will feel better in the long run. As we turn the page in the calendar, we are turning to a new page in our lives.

Thursday, December 31 New Year’s Eve under a Virgo Moon is more health-conscious than party animal. Apply any health-related New Year’s resolutions tonight to demonstrate that you are serious. Excuses to party hard and overindulge might backfire on your physical wellbeing. Some of us are likely to clean out some piles or practice a bit of feng shui to align the energies and prepare for the brand new year. There are many ways to celebrate and honor this passage of yet another year as we head into 2016. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Monday, December 28 Yesterday’s energy spills over, and can be harnessed to change our approach to the week. The holiday spirit lingers, as well as some increasingly argumentative moodiness acted out by some folks. What is their problem? Perhaps they just want to someone to listen as they get something off their chests. Maybe they need some feedback that offers an alternate perspective. But maybe they are just playing devil’s advocate. Some people are just spoilers. Don’t be one of them. If someone is disturbing you, try drafting a letter to that person. Then edit it. Whether or not you ever send it (sometimes best not to), this exercise helps you get your thoughts and feelings straightened out.

Tuesday, December 29 That disagreeable energy may hit a peak today and linger through the Void of Course Moon that starts at 11:38am. Just over an hour, this VoC Moon break gives us time to process our feelings about what is going on. Maybe you want to write that letter I mentioned for yesterday. When the Moon enters common sense Virgo at 12:58pm, we have likely sorted things out, at least enough to proceed efficiently enough with the day.

Dancing with Your Dark Horse by Blair McKissock, MSEd, RYT Winter is nearly here. The signs are all around us, and inside of us. Nature is signaling the change with the bare trees, cloudy days, and breezy coolness. Internally, our bodies are craving rich foods, warm beds, and lots of sleep. Not too many generations ago, it was a time after the harvest that we prepared to hunker down and wait out the long winter. As we retreat into our homes, we also retreat into our inner world, sometimes confronting and contemplating the struggle between the light and dark sides of the self; as this time of year yields more darkness than light until the Winter Solstice. Everyone has a side that they keep hidden; the personalities or personas that we don’t like, and desire to change, becoming our “Ideal” self. It is sometimes referred to as the “dark side” or as Carl Jung called it, the Shadow. One might also think of the archetype of the Dark Horse. The Dark Horse is not evil or threatening, yet dark, veiled in shadow or unknown. Of course, these qualities make it scary, yet it is nothing to fear. Our personal dark horse represents those qualities that we try to hide when we put on a smile for the world, when inside it may be more like a raging storm, unsettled and unpredictable. Just like the dark horse, it is mysterious to us, we are cautious to approach, and are intimidated by it. In certain traditions, this time of year is the time of descent and confrontation, when we dance with our dark horse. In Linda Kohanov’s book and card set “Way of the Horse,” she describes the archetype of the Black Horse Wisdom where treasures are hidden in the darkness. “A coal-black horse dances with her shadow under the light of the midnight moon.” (p.165). Because we are more withdrawn and tend to spend more time indoors during this time of year it is thought of as descending into darkness. It is not a time to fear the dark, but a time to prepare for and meet head-on those patterns that we tend to repeat year after year in our lives. By allowing for reflection and review of the previous year, we might see that we repeat the same mistakes over and over again. By seeing those patterns or tendencies, we can learn to break them and move forward with our growth. Just as in yoga, we must learn to let go of what no longer serves us. This is the time that we reflect on what patterns we see, and choose a focus for our work. It can be overwhelming if we get caught up in everything we perceive as a misstep in our life. We must try to look as objectively as we can to determine what we are ready to confront and work on. It is as if you are looking at a herd of dark horses, running in and out of the shadows, evading the light. Some are large and threatening, others are small and quick. We must choose one to work with at a time. If we try to work on every 44 Conscious Community -DECEMBER 2015

shadow all at once, we will easily become lost, and run the risk of shutting down or pushing away further any hope of growth. It does take courage to examine the deep recesses of our psyche, and look at what we have done over the years that we may not be proud of, but the only way to find the light is to go within. We must dance with the dark horse in order to tame it, and create a relationship with it and eventually ride it out of darkness and into the light. In many cultures, this dark half of the year was celebrated with ritual, rites of passage from the old self to the new. Just as nature goes dormant, it is the time we recognize as a stillness before spring and everything is new again. Jhenah Telyndru, in her book “Avalon Within: A Sacred Journey of Myth, Mystery, and Inner Wisdom” describes it as “...turning our attention within to see the root of our wounding, the cause of our pain and all that prevents us from being whole.” (p.90) She also reminds us that this shadow self cannot be destroyed, just as energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it is a part of who we are. Our job on this journey is to dance with it, get to know it, and embrace it emerging transformed.

Once we have chosen the dark horse that we are willing to work with we must be realistic. The dark horse can be a handful. It will not be easily tamed, it can rear up and try to strike us, try to run away, or remain completely hidden. We must take this journey one step at a time, approaching with confidence and also awareness. This time is usually the deepest and darkest part of winter, also known as confrontation. We confront this horse and begin the dance as we bring in light, and we learn to understand it from all perspectives with the intention of coming to some sort of resolution with it. It represents the root of our disconnection from the self. Telyndru describes this inner dance: “Seeing the roots of our wounding allows us to throw back the veil of illusion and reclaim energies tied up in retaining these false beliefs about our abilities and ourselves. This reclamation is the gift that can only be found in the darkness.” (Avalon Within, p.108). It is always darkest just before dawn, and though it may be hard to question and square off with this dark horse, we know that just around the corner is the promise of renewal and new life that comes with spring. We can get to know our dark horse through journaling, asking the hard questions about where this tendency that we are working with might have originated, and where it shows up in our life. We might also spend time talking with others who are taking the same journey of self-examination, taking on our dark horses together. Just by recognizing it, naming it and examining it, we have changed it. If we do our jobs right, we will recognize this horse when it shows up in our life, and have the confidence to reclaim our inner power and keep it from running us around the arena, so to speak.

I think we can all agree that there are times when our dark horses seem to be in control, leading us instead of us leading them. Just like horses, we can’t try to bully our behaviors or ignore them pretending they don’t exist. We have to create a relationship with them. Our dark horse may be a recurring thought that runs through our head constantly reminding us of our faults. The harder we try to ignore it, the more persistent it can be. The harder we try to push it out, the harder it pushes back. If we recognize where it comes from, and how it limits us, then we take away its power. It begins to loosen its hold. It may never go away, but we are no longer scared of it, and it no longer rules us. Then in the spring when we emerge from the darkness, our dark horse walks beside us. It becomes a willing participant in what makes us who we are. It can become a source of power that we can call upon when we need it, responding to us instead of fighting and running wild. We then test the horse out during the course of the year until it is time again to examine our herd of dark horses in the shadows of our consciousness, and pick one to dance with until one day, our herd is quiet, settled, and fully integrated out of the shadow and into the light. Until then, embrace the dance with your dark horse. Blair McKissock, MSEd, RYT is a speaker and author on experiential and nature-based learning. Tarot:

READINGS, CONCEPTUAL BLENDING, AND MIND MAPPING

by Vincent Pitisci

Years ago, I decided to use four basic aspects when doing most of my Tarot card readings—aspects that would be beneficial to any issue presented to me. Those four aspects are:

WHAT? WHY? HOW? WHEN? If you could answer these four aspects accurately in regard to any issue every time you did a reading, you would be richer than Donald Trump and Bill Gates combined.

WHAT allows me to explore the real issue the seeker/client wants to resolve. Asking WHAT allows me to question the question itself and probe the client’s viewpoint of her own question. WHY allows me to question why the seeker/client wants this

particular objective in their life? Looking into WHY helps me see the true motive behind the ostensible goal being sought.

HOW allows me to see possible ways to accomplish this goal; it allows me to look into future opportunities and options that may help bring about success. WHEN allows me to see when the best time is for the seeker/

client to act on this objective. Maybe certain things need to be done before starting in terms of preparation and readiness. Maybe more information needs to be gathered more information before taking on this challenge. Or maybe the time is now, before the opportunity is lost. Here we have a fourcard spread using these four aspects— WHAT, WHY, HOW, AND WHEN—as the positions:

46 Conscious Community -DECEMBER 2015

Breaking a question like this into sections is a way of mapping the question into segments of importance that can now be looked at in depth. To break a question apart into such segments has also been recognized as a pattern among great thinkers, past and present. Today, this pattern is recognized as part of a technique called creative thinking in psychological studies exploring methods of problem solving. The four sections shown here would be called the fixed elements of the question. In a tarot card reading, they are called the positions of the card spread. The card reader essentially uses a creative-thinking technique by laying out the fixed elements of a card reading every time they look into a question. These elements become a map of the question. The next step in the reading would be to place Tarot cards randomly into each position/element of the spread. This practice of random placement is also a basic creative-thinking technique, referred to as adding random stimulus. A random stimulus is combined with the fixed elements of the question. Making associations between the random stimulus and the fixed elements is called conceptual blending. Adding randomness to the positions of a Tarot card spread enables us to make fresh associations and get new ideas for the element of the question each card represents. Again, this is a very common technique based on the well-established psychological study of creative thinking. What attributes can be seen as a result of the randomness added to the element of the question? How can they help modify, create, improve, invent, substitute, or find some other new way of thinking about that element—whether intuitively, logically, metaphorically, or in some other way? This way of thinking cannot be achieved with conventional thought.

The randomly selected Tarot cards that are placed in each position now give us new insightful ideas.

The only things visible on a reader’s table are the cards themselves. The Tarot cards are a perfect resource for sparking ideas about aspects of the question being explored. The insights found are told to the client as the reader realizes them. That is, a card reading is a verbal version of a mind map. To recap, the aspects of the centuries-old practice of card reading seem to have the same procedures that are recognized today as basic creative-thinking techniques—specifically, conceptual blending and mind mapping. Here are the steps: 1. Mapping the question out: A card spread is created that breaks the question apart into sections to be examined. 2. Assigning fixed elements to the question: Each section of the card-spread map is assigned aspects of importance regarding the question itself. These sections are called fixed elements. 3. Adding Random Stimulus: A random stimulus in the form of Tarot cards is added to each fixed element of the question to discover new and original ideas.

Ideas are shown here as tiny branches of insight stemming from each positioned card. These tiny branches of insight would not be visible on the reader’s table, like they are in the diagram above; instead, they would be expressed verbally as they come into the reader’s mind. The tiny branches stemming from each position would be spoken advice given by the experienced Tarot reader to the client. The result would be a wealth of ideas and insight for discussion. If this whole process were illustrated on paper as it is above, it would automatically become a mind map—another recognized creative-thinking technique. In a reading, even though neither the fine branches of insight nor the positions of the card spreads are visually seen, they are both still very important parts of the process. The reader has a mental picture of the spread before she performs the reading.

Again, this procedure of associating a random stimulus to a fixed element of a question is called conceptual blending. It is a well-established technique used by creative consultants to make predictions on future objectives; in other words, to predict the future. Typically, the term used to describe what a card reader does is divination. That terminology sparks a stereotyped impression of Tarot card reading as something mysterious and unexplainable. It is a mindset we have had about the Tarot for centuries. But today, that mystery can be solved and the unexplainable now explained. And with that new insight, we can open doors never before seen or realized.
