Letter from the Publisher Our May 9th conference was successful with our new speakers blending in smoothly with our veteran presenters. Clips of the event are available on Facebook www.facebook.com/TheMonthlyAspectarian and Conscious Community magazine YouTube channel for those of you that missed the show or just want a refresher. We are considering moving the event to an earlier date in April and your comments and input are sincerely appreciated and valued. Thanks to all of you that participated in our online reader survey. Your responses help us to formulate changes and to know where we are doing alright and to leave those things alone. Our staff and I will be appearing at the Body, Mind, Spirit Expo in Tinley Park this month. Please take the opportunity to say hello and give us your comments on this publication. We are always looking for new distribution points that are more convenient to some of our readers, so if you have a suggested new location please have contact information of the location with you to expedite its addition. The pace of change continues to amaze some and depress others. The good old days seem further and further away for those who relish their return, while others forge ahead into our future, unknown as it may be. There is more willingness to move ahead than most of us have ever experienced and the younger generations can’t even imagine standing still. Those younger generations are our future, while hopefully blending in some of the older folks for balance and the wisdom of experience. As our population ages and the demographics shift, change becomes very challenging for some while commonplace for the young. Social protest is more evident now than at any time since the 60’s. People are more willing to commit and participate in social protest now. My thoughts are, pick your cause and jump in, the water is fine. Few things are more exhilarating than group action, whatever the focus. Never feel powerless. Most people are unaware of their power to change our country and the world. That’s why the percentage of people voting is so low. But you are not going to change the world sitting in your living room, or watching television, or complaining to your circle of friends. You can only elicit change by taking action and unified action multiplies the power of the individual into the power of the group. So join a group or start a group and mobilize the energy that will lead to change. In Alberta Canada, the starting point of the proposed Keystone Pipeline, change has unexpectedly occurred big time in the recent election. The New Democratic Party (NDP) was elected to a controlling position in Alberta’s unicameral legislature, the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, on May 5th. The NDP had been a small minority party since 1944 when its first member was elected. A single party, the Progressive Conservatives had been in sole control in the Alberta legislature since 1971, a period of 43 years. The NDP was given little chance of success in the polls until less than a month before the election. Nonetheless they won a sweeping victory, winning 54 seats in the 87 member legislature. In their last in 2012 the NDP won exactly 4 seats. The people spoke. And they spoke loudly. A major issue was the Keystone Pipeline which the outgoing conservative party supported. Change isn’t just possible, it’s inevitable. Until next time,

All About Town…
3rd Annual Conscious Connection Conference Villa Park, IL May 9th, 2015
by Theresa Puskar On Saturday, May 9th I attended the third annual Conscious Connection Conference at the Odeum in Villa Park. During the past two years I spoke at the event, yet this year I decided not to do so. I have to say that what I experienced at this conference was extremely powerful; more so than most I have attended, and I have attended many. Second only to my experiences related to the Oneness University Deepening Process, the healing that I received at this event was more powerful than anything I have recently experienced. In retrospect, as I step back from the conference, I noted that it was a response to my cry for help. As is always the case in my life, I set a very focused intention to the universe, and it responded in a wondrous and magnificent way! The afternoon before the event I was scheduled to see a healing practitioner to work on my energy along with any residual healing of my heart. You may recall that I referenced the healing a couple of months ago in one of my previous articles. As time passes I become more and more disturbed by his concern over my heart, and I wanted to lift the burdensome negative identification I had with a “wounded heart” since his prognosis. He was from out of town, and only in Chicago for a few days. Unfortunately, he was running late, working on another patient prior to my appointment, and we had to cancel. I was extremely disappointed, and frankly, I forgot to trust that the universe always takes care of me. So the following morning I headed off to the conference with the intention of reviewing the speakers and vendor booths so that I could write this article. Before leaving, I asked the universe for a message regarding the disappointment, and the missed healing opportunity. As I often do, I set my intention and then randomly opened to a page in Julia Cameron’s Prayers to the Great Creator: Prayers and Declarations for a Meaningful Life. Here is the message I received: “Resistance solidifies grief. We can allow our griefs to dissolve through releasing them to the healing rain of tears. As we weep with loss, our spiritual landscape is made anew. All change carries gain as well as loss. As I release situations which have troubled me, I release, too, my identity as troubled. This shift brings with it intense emotion. Grief is the natural and healing companion of loss. Embraced and surrendered to, grief creates transformation. (Affirmation) Today I do not deny my feelings of loss. I allow myself to move through them to new growth.” (pp. 295 & 296) 8 Conscious Community - June 2015
In the moment I read this, I realized that perhaps the conference was an answer to my prayerful intent. I arrived with a sense of curiosity and hopefulness about the day. I was greeted at the door by Kasia Szumal and her wonderful team of volunteers. As always, she was warm and inviting. She never ceases to amaze me! No matter how busy she gets at these events, she always finds the time to connect in a kind and loving way. I so deeply appreciate Kasia – the wonderful work that she does and for the healing energy that her presence exudes. Upon entering the conference room, I was immediately taken aback by the first booth. It was beautifully decorated, with a huge pyramid at its center, and quite an impressive collection of didgeridoos alongside of it. The gentleman manning the booth greeted me with a heartwarming hug. He looked at me and spoke as if he was a dear friend. I noted his kind spirit and welcoming energy, planning to return and learn more about him. In the meantime I set out to my first speaking event. “You need to embrace the fullness of your humanity. With presence-based healing, you are working through your issues here and now.” – Paul Wong The first speaker I had an opportunity to “experience” was Paul Wong. As he spoke, Theresa Puskar and Paul Wong my first impression of Paul was that he was a very unassuming and laid back individual. While at first he did not come across as a polished and poised speaker, I quickly came to realize that he was a rare individual who truly went with the flow and chose to live in the present moment. From the moment he took to the stage he had an ease that was remarkable. He did not recite a “boxed” practiced speech, but rather took us with him through a momentby-moment healing experience. He shared that his healing journey began about nine years ago when he was struggling with chronic asthma. “If you can be fully loving of your worst experience, you can transcend it.” – Paul Wong
He immediately started facilitating a physical healing on one of the participants, encouraging each of us to focus on any physical blocks that we were struggling with. He explained that the ego tries to avoid pain, and used the analogy of a lightbulb. If covered with dirt, the light cannot shine through. Similarly, if our minds are covered with anger, hurt, or disappointment, they block the light that shines within and around us. He encouraged us to observe the drama in our lives, invoke the presence, and allow ourselves to embrace whatever feelings arise. I focused on my heart, and effortlessly felt the sadness that rested there. Tears began to fall as he walked us through the healing process, intuitively asking questions that would call in further physical and emotional exploration. After some probing I came to the realization that I was not at peace with being afraid. As he spoke I felt the layers of my discomfort opening like the petals of a blossoming lotus flower. With each delve into the emotions I had been resisting, the flower within my heart was opening. In the 50 minutes that Paul worked with us, I experienced a huge emotional release and extraordinary healing. “We have been conditioned not to value processing our feelings. If they are not released, then they are brought back to the mind as a dumping ground. I still get challenged, but I do not get hooked into the drama. I am aware and process in the moment. It has taken a lot of work, but the journey has been beautiful.” – Paul Wong Paul chants the Gayatri mantra three to four hours each day, and finds that in doing so he “bursts through thoughts to silence.” He asks us, “In the midst of challenges, how patient can you be?” His patience, his trust in the process, and his faith were very potent. In each moment it was clear that he had no personal agenda. His commitment was to be a channel of healing, and he clearly was. The healing I experienced in his seminar was so powerful that I had to retreat to my car and rest for an hour before proceeding. That experience alone would have been more than enough for the day, but I soon learned there was much more in store. I took some time between speakers to visit with the various vendors at the conference. My first stop was Sacred Gardens & Crystals. Robb, Emily & Robb of Seeking some Sacred Gardens & Crystals grounding after the powerful experience I had with Paul, I was immediately drawn to their table. It was covered with healing stones from all over the world - big and small, holding a myriad of healing properties. The first piece I was drawn to pick up was a deep green jade. Immediately I felt a powerful energy course through me. It was potent and felt right. I explored several other stones, yet as always, the first intuitive hit was right, and I purchased that stone.
There were more than the healing stones at that table, however. There was something about the owner, Robb Ebert and his two friends Robb and Emily that drew me to them. I had had some coaching with Emily previously, and the warmth with which she greeted me further warmed my open heart. I was fascinated as Robb shared his passion with me. He specializes in landscape architecture, utilizing sacred geometry and his knowledge of rocks and minerals in his designs. This has been his passion for many years, and he finds great pleasure in seeing his creations manifested. I’m putting Robb and his magical designs among my future intentions. “When I build the drums, they direct me to the colors I should paint upon them. The flutes tell me what key they want to be in. They communicate how they want the curves to be formed. I am drawn towards which type of wood to use and what totem animals speak through them.” – Ole White Shield Wilson My next stop was to visit with Ole White Shield Wilson. He is a Black Creek Shawnee elder who resides in Utah. He was invited to open and close the conference. He was responsible for calling Theresa and Ole White Shield Wilson in the directions and invoking nature’s divine presence to the event, and, based on the energy that I and many other attendees that I spoke with felt throughout the day, he did an outstanding job! By the time I reached Ole White Shield’s table, he had already sold all of his flutes, and only a small number of drums remained. I was drawn to one particular drum, and when I asked him about it, he shared that it held the balancing energy of masculine and feminine energy within it. Again, there are no accidents in the world of spirit, as I have also been focusing on finding harmony and balance with the masculine and feminine energies in my life. When he spoke of how he created the instruments that he sold, I was mesmerized. The shaping and molding of each came from his heart. It was clear that he became one with the spirit guides as they walked him through how they wanted to be born into this world. He and his powerful instruments radiated ancient healing tradition, and nurturing, earth-honoring power. “How do we live well in this world of rapid change, evolving technology, seemingly vast quantities of information, and ever increasing stress?” – Ron Hounsell The question above formed the basis of Ron Hounsell’s seminar. It was provocative, highly informative, and very thoughtprovoking. Ron has overseen the Chicago chapter of the Edgar Cayce Center for several years. While I’ve known him for quite some time, this was my first opportunity to see him speak, and I was not disappointed. Three things were evident from the start: 1) Ron’s passion for personal growth, 2) His breadth of wisdom, and 3) His knowledge of and passion for Edgar Cayce. Conscious Community - www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 9
The presentation was chock-full of wisdom, and moved as fast as Ron’s mind does! It was packed full of awe-inspiring practice advice, some of which came from him, while others were based Ron Hounsell and Theresa on communiqués by Edgar Cayce and his fellow seekers. The inspirations in his training were too numerous to mention, but to give you a taste, here are some of the highlights: • There is no “them” and “us”. • With every new technology, we bring our good and bad qualities to it. • You are walking around with the question, thus you are also walking with the answers. • “Good” is eternal. • “If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s.” – Joseph Campbell • Do what you need to do with what is at hand and the rest will follow. • Be of service. • Artists are extremely skilled at what they do. Think about living ARTFULLY – with a high level of skill and within our reach. • “Our purpose here is to be HAPPY.” – The Dalai Lama • Pick up your mail. The universe is sending us enforcements and encouragement. • “Don’t just do something; sit there!” • “If you don’t apply what you know, it’s like going to a famous restaurant and licking the menu.” • “You are what you eat, so don’t be fast, cheap, easy, or fake.” • “He who expects nothing shall never be disappointed.”
with a divine master. “Suddenly after hours and hours of walking, the master stopped, dragged his bare right foot across the sand, casting an imprint, and then proceeded to meditate.” Something about it energetically drew me in. Perhaps it was the electric stillness of the moment, or the exalted meditative silence. In fact, it was so powerful that I still feel I would love to hang the photo in my sacred space by my altar. Thank you, Bob for taking me on that short respite into the expansive sandy stillness with the desert master.
Bob Macko & one of his photos
Finally, I made my way full circle back to Ricky Yutuc’s striking “Attunement of the Aquarian Age” energetic healing booth. I had revisited the booth several times throughout the day, and each time I did there was a large line of attendees waiting to enter into his massive copper and crystal prism. I finally had a chance to experience it as the day came to a close. Before even stepping into it, I felt a buzzing throughout my body.
There were two provocative questions that Ron asked that sparked a particularly poignant reflective flame within me. The first: “Why are here. Why are you at this conference and in this room at this time, sitting in the chair that you are sitting in?” It was clear to me that I was in a place of receiving. I was being given many healing opportunities. What a blessed job I have – that I can further my spiritual and healing journey while seeking contents for these articles. The second: “Are you living ‘on purpose?’ How does your life thus far compare with your purpose?” With that particular question I had a lightbulb moment. I realized and was thrilled to affirm that most of the time my life is, in fact on purpose. Again, how blessed I feel. “In my photography I capture moments and share emotional experiences with people.” – Bob Macko Another booth that immediately caught my attention was Joanne and Bob Macko’s booth. It was filled with her exquisite artwork, and Bob’s powerful photographic images. There was one piece in particular that kept energetically drawing me in. It was the image that Bob is holding in the above photo. When I asked about it, he explained that he was on a spirit quest in the desert 10 Conscious Community - June 2015
Ricky Yutuc’s Healing Prism
The energy that emanated from it was extremely powerful! Ricky explained that he and his spiritual friend, Father Joshua received messages from Archangel Michael to build the prism. They channeled all of the logistics and followed the guidance
they received with great precision. They placed a crystal the size of a skull at the center of the stool that the recipients sit on. They also placed crystals throughout the copper prism rod and in a circle around its base. Once I was seated and had chosen a crystal to hold, Ricky began to play a didgeridoo. First he pointed it at my heart, and then worked it around throughout my chakra system. As the instrument sang, I could feel powerful energy coursing through me. I began to feel light-headed, and felt my energy lifting. Then without any warning whatsoever I began to cry. I did not attempt to understand where the tears came from, nor why they started. I simply allowed them to fall until there were no more. As the healing came to an end, I saw a vibrant royal blue light grow at my third eye. A friend later told me that the blue light that appeared at the third eye opens one to a path of greater intuitive knowing.
Theresa Puskar, our All About Town contributor, is a writer, trainer, speaker, and inspirational audiobook producer. She has recently authored The Terri Series – seven children’s books that focus on social issues such as bullying, honoring diversity, celebrating creativity, non-judgment of emotions, finding alternatives to technology-based entertainment, discovering a non-judgmental God, and overcoming fears. The experience I had in that prism is difficult to put into words. It was powerful. It was transformative in ways that are beyond the comprehension of my mind. As I left the booth and reflected on the day, I saw how much heart healing I had experienced that day. I realized that once I let go of my disappointment about the canceled appointment, the universe offered me more of what I needed. As the message said during my morning reflection, “We can allow our griefs to dissolve through releasing them to the healing rain of tears. As we weep with loss, our spiritual landscape is made anew.” I spent the day doing so, and as I sat in that prism, I felt the heaviness of 50+ years lift from my spirit. I salute the new landscape that my spirit invoked at the conference. My deepest gratitude to all of the gifted healers and teachers that worked with me at the conference, and to my sweet, benevolent divine for the constant gifts that grace my life.

ASTROLOGY BASICS 101 Pain Points
by Kaye Berjot Over the course of the Astrology Basics 101 series I have discussed a number of components. If you need a refresher, you can always find previous articles on the Conscious Community Magazine website. Last month, I had the opportunity do a presentation at the 3rd Annual Conscious Connection Conference. It was an honor to see so many people come out and support the community. During my presentation, I shared my own natal chart, where I’d mentioned that I had several planets in Libra (Venus, Sun, Uranus, Pluto & Mars), along with a Sagittarius rising, and a Taurus Moon. In that presentation I also included a bullet point for Chiron. To be honest, I hadn’t planned on discussing Chiron in great length, primarily due to the fact that it’s a little more complex than the other concepts that were previously introduced within the Astrology Basics Series. But as with anything, you have to go with the flow because it seemed to be of interest to some of the attendees. With that said, I thought that it might be of some interest to you too. Chiron is a comet and not a planet. In Greek Mythology Chiron is described as a centaur, and was thought of as a great teacher who sacrificed himself in order for mankind to have the use of fire. Chiron represents our deepest wounds, and is known as The Wounded Healer in astrology. In my opinion, Chiron is connected to the sign of Sagittarius. The reason for this is because the symbol of Sagittarius is the Centaur. Sagittarius has the motto “I understand,” which can also be synonymous with “I teach,” or “I learn,” and lastly because Sagittarius is a fire sign. Sometimes we just have to look at the obvious to draw our conclusions. Chiron in a chart can tell you where your deepest pain points are hidden. Some of these pain points are self-inflicted, yet some can be deeply rooted in your DNA, and can come from your ancestral memories. This means that they are not your pain points, rather the wounds of your family that need to be healed in order to lift the weight off of yourself and the generation that succeeds or follows you. Chiron is associated with Sagittarius, and therefore with the 9th house. In astrology, Jupiter, the planet of expansion rules Sagittarius, so you can see why it’d be important to understand the source of pain…because when you combine it with the energy of Jupiter, pain can be overwhelming. 12 Conscious Community - June 2015
This is how I analyze Chiron in the signs: 1. Chiron in Aries would indicate a pain point associated with who you are, or not being allowed to move forward with what you want to become. 2. Chiron in Taurus would indicate a pain associated with self-worth, and the ability to apply yourself in ways that are beneficial. 3. Chiron in Gemini can indicate a pain point with connecting with your peers, or of being misunderstood by others. 4. Chiron in Cancer would indicate a pain point associated with not receiving enough care and guidance. 5. Chiron in Leo would indicate a pain point associated with not being strong enough to achieve your goals. 6. Chiron in Virgo would indicate a pain point in not believing what it is that you see. 7. Chiron in Libra would indicate a pain in not believing in others. 8. Chiron in Scorpio would indicate a pain point in not being able to transform and change your ways in order to achieve greater abundance. 9. Chiron in Sagittarius would indicate a pain point in not being able to learn through travel and other cultures because it’s been cut off to you. 10. Chiron in Capricorn would indicate a pain point in not being able to create stability. 11. Chiron in Aquarius would indicate a pain point from being excluded from your community. 12. Chiron in Pisces would indicate a pain point brought on by spiritual beliefs or through confinement. As a reminder, every chart is different, and you might not have Aries in the first house. You might look at your chart and discover that you have Aries in the 4th house. This means that you would have to apply the pain point and what it means to the house that the sign resides in. For example, a pain point associated with the ability to move forward has taken place in the house of home and your roots. If the pain point is due to ancestral memories, it’s important to discover who planted that seed, so that you can plant a new seed in its place. Once you do that, you are able to free yourself along with others in your family. Pain points are like weeds, they will continue to grow until someone comes along and pulls it out. As with any method of self-discovery, you have to be willing to ask questions if you seek answers. Therefore, you have to ask questions not only of yourself and to ask questions of those that are close to the situation. Sometimes it’s difficult to ask painful

The Gift
by Blair McKissock, MSEd, RYT
This weekend my partner in crime and I were traveling to teach a workshop. After a short flight and adventurous car ride we arrived at a lovely hotel and spent the usual time before crashing to go over the agenda for the following day. Typically, we follow a similar pattern for each workshop we teach. It keeps us on time and on target for those who are sharing their hard earned funds to support our work, spreading the word about equine assisted learning. Little did we know that this was not going to be a typical workshop. After a hectic morning we headed out to the family farm to set up and after some communications with our hosts, we knew there was a sick horse that would need their attention, altering our plan. If there is one thing you can expect when working with horses, it is the unexpected and it is never out of the realm of possibility that the facilitator needs to be flexible. It turned out to be more serious than we had thought. This horse was older and had most likely started to colic sometime in the night as he was in obvious distress, when the staff arrived early in the morning. So by the time we had arrived, the veterinarian had been there already and had completed the standard protocol for colic. When something goes wrong with a horse it is never an easy fix or without some complications. And so we joined the staff as they walked this weak gelding in endless circles in the arena. Time seemed to slow as this is an all too familiar situation if you have been around horses as long as some of us but it never gets easier. There have been times in my life where I have wanted to walk away from working with animals forever, because of the heartbreak that resides on the other side of the scale from joy. There can be such a feeling of helplessness when a human observes an animal in distress. We cannot speak to them in our words and our attempts at comfort are not always interpreted as such. It can also be gut wrenching to watch the reactions of other humans around as they comes 14 Conscious Community - June 2015
to grips with the heaviness of the situation knowing that things are not improving. After a time, the horse began to get weaker and his legs got shakier as he tried to continue pleasing those who loved him by continuing to walk because they were asking him to. If you let a horse that is in distress from colic lie down, they may roll and cause further twisting of their gut. It can be hard to get them back up if they do go down. At times I would catch myself welling up, as I listened to them tell stories of how much of a handful he was when he was young and how he turned into their most trusted therapy horse. They recounted the stories of the lives that he changed turning people from a dark path to one of light and possibility. I could not offer anything to comfort them other than trying desperately to hold the space. In my hand I pulled my mala beads through one at a time reciting every mantra I could think of to keep myself grounded. My job was to share the moment with them, not get lost in my own memories of past horse tragedies. I drew strength from the gorgeous Oak tree that stood dead center of the doors to the arena. I imagined connecting with its roots and asking it to send strength to each person physically and emotionally supporting this gelding through his transition. As I stood in the center I couldn’t help but notice the connection between everyone there, the common thread between them was him. As his energy waned, their connection grew stronger nearing the inevitable conclusion of mortality. This is when a human must come to terms with a decision that no one ever wants to make; an impossible decision to let a horse go. There is a suffering in the human heart to watch an animal suffer. As in any discussion around animal euthanasia, there comes a reconciliation that even though we cannot speak with an animal to ask them what they want, there are times when
we cannot make things better. This was slowly becoming one of those times. One by one each of the staff came out into the arena until they were all there. As a group they supported him with their compassion and their energy to encourage him to soldier on but he was clearly tired and in pain.
in his retirement he inspired so many children who needed to know the unconditional love and support of a horse. He gave them the gift of hope and his humans returned the favor by letting him go.
The veterinarian came back again and assessed his condition and determined that it had become worse and there were signs that his body was shutting down. There was no more she could do other than to make him comfortable. When faced with this situation, there is a moment when your brain and your heart have this discourse about the ethics of euthanasia and your brain runs through every scenario where they recover fully and live to gallop through the fields again, but your heart sees something different. But the heart doesn’t want to be the one to make the decision.

The staff asked the vet what to do and in true fashion she reminded them that she cannot make that decision for them but can only give her observations. So they turned to us. They didn’t ask us what they should do but asked a question that weighed very heavy on my heart. They asked what we thought he was telling us. The healer in me wanted to lay my hands on him and fix it. At that moment I wanted to be gifted with the ability to make everything Ok and take away their pain by healing him. But I am not gifted that way. I couldn’t tell them anything other than they had done everything right. One of the greatest gifts we can give is peace. We prayed for the swift passage of his soul and that he be released. And surrounded by everyone who loved him under the shade of a grand Oak, he let go. In life he was a grand show horse for his first career and

From the Heart The Jewel in the Lotus by Alan Cohen I was coaching a woman who was stuck in the process of getting her website posted. When I asked her what the hardest part was for her, she answered that it was the “About Me” page. “I struggle with whether I am truly qualified to offer my services. I feel encumbered by self-doubts and self-judgments.” When I asked her where she had learned these doubts, she explained that her father was a critical editor, and as a child she grew hesitant to make any statements about herself, since he might put her down for not being perfect or expressing herself impeccably. During our coaching session she realized that she needed to communicate with her father and heal their relationship. After making significant progress in our session, her last words were, “It wasn’t about the website at all, was it?” It never is. It’s always about your thoughts, fears, and visions about presenting yourself to the world. A website or any new profession, relationship, or step ahead in life is an excellent projective test for where your consciousness lives at the moment. Since life is more about what’s going on inside you rather than what’s going on outside, the best use of outside is to shine light on the inside, so you can progress in your soul’s journey. A woman phoned in to my radio show at hayhouseradio.com, and asked for some tips on how to lose excess pounds. I asked her when the weight had come on, and she answered that it had started when she had gotten divorced a few years earlier. Then I asked her a question based on what the spiritual teacher Bashar calls “the motivational mechanism.” “How do you believe the weight serves you? If, on some level, you have chosen the weight for a reason, what would that reason be?” She thought for a moment and answered, “The end of my marriage and my divorce were so painful that I really don’t want another man in my life, at least not now. Perhaps I believe that the excess weight makes me less attractive to men, and I won’t have to deal with all of those messy issues.” I thanked her for her honesty, and then asked her if she would consider simply making the choice to not be with a man for now, without needing to use the weight as a protective mechanism. She liked that idea, and we explored ways she could claim her power and her choices by making clear statements. The conversation ended on a high note. So the weight was not the problem. It was the symptom. More deeply it was a directional signal to look deeper.

In my life coach training program I teach the students to distinguish between presenting issues and core issues. The issue presented is rarely the one that needs to be addressed. If you are having trouble moving chess pieces around the playing board, it’s because there are magnets under the table holding the pieces in place or moving them to undesirable places. When you look under the table and see the hand that is holding the magnet, and recognize it to be your own, you are free to move the pieces where you would. One of the most famous Buddhist mantras is “Om mani padme hum,” which means, “the jewel in the lotus.” The lotus represents the surface appearance of life, and the jewel represents the spiritual reality underlying the obvious reality. The obvious reality is relatively real. The spiritual reality is ultimately real. If you truly seek reality, look deeper. Appearances are deceptive. Life seems to be one thing, when it is really another. Yet we can use appearances, especially troubling ones, to follow the trail of bread crumbs to the source of causation, which is always mind, belief, attitude, and expectation. Building a website is the new Rorschach projective test. Inkblots have given way to pixels. I sometimes fantasize about developing a coaching practice in which I ask clients to build a website, and then process with them what comes up along the way. You don’t need to build a website to face your fears and limiting beliefs, as well as your courage and your glorious visions. Every day at work, every relationship, every time you look in the mirror, every time you look at your bank balance, you have a golden opportunity to pierce to the jewel in the lotus. Every moment in your earthly journey is an expression of your consciousness. We are not here to manipulate events. We are here to elevate consciousness. When we do so, the events of our lives flow naturally and well. Then all of our daily activities become fuel for spiritual growth, and we are well on our way to mastery. The Shared Heart
N ew D i m e n s i o n s o f R e l a t i o n s h i p by Joyce and Barry Vissell
A New Way to Receive Appreciation How do you handle acknowledgment from others? There are two different types of acknowledgment. There are compliments which are more superficial and can involve the clothes or jewelry we are wearing, the car we drive, the beautiful dog walking by our side, or our adorable baby. If these compliments are pure and not part of someone trying to pick you up, they are relatively easy to accept and say thank you to. Then there are deeper appreciations that involve your character and inner qualities. How would you respond if someone spoke directly from their heart: “You have so much love coming through you;” “Your wisdom has really changed my life;” “I feel uplifted just being in your presence;” “There is so much light coming from your eyes;” or “You are a true healer and I feel so much better.” How would you honestly respond? There are many people who feel uncomfortable, and do not really know how to respond to these types of appreciations. Some people would deflect the appreciation and say something like, “Oh, you too.” They would then quickly change the subject. Some people would ignore the comment altogether yet think to themselves, “If you really knew me, you would not be saying such a thing.” My beloved father would always smile and say, “Nonsense!” I knew that he liked the appreciation, yet he just couldn’t let on that he did. One day I wrote out all my appreciations and sent them to him. Weeks went by and I did not hear back. Finally I called and asked if he received them. All he said was “yes.” Years later, a week after he had passed away, I found the letter hidden under his shirts in the drawer. The paper was worn out from being looked at so much. He truly did treasure those appreciations, yet it was so difficult to let me know. When Barry and I were 22, we got married in December during his break from Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee. This was an African-American school in the ‘60s, when civil rights were a huge issue. It was difficult for him to be in the white minority. On his first day back to school, Barry came to me with a look of vulnerability and need for my love. His vulnerability allowed me to see the greatness of his being, and all that he was meant to be in this world. With all the love in my heart I simply said, “Barry, I feel in awe of who you are.” He became embarrassed and said, “I’m not sure you should say something like that.” Fortunately Barry has since learned to really take in what I say to him. 18 Conscious Community - June 2015
Why is it so hard to receive appreciation? None of us wants to be like the person who takes in the appreciation and then feels that they are the greatest human being on the planet. We all have met people who have a very big ego and genuinely feel they are more special than anyone else. People like that can be unpleasant to be around. None of us wants to feel superior to others. I personally have struggled with this issue very much in my early years. I was always striving for humility, and I equated accepting an appreciation with a lack of humility. Forty years ago, when we were first starting to give workshops, a woman walked up and gave me a genuine appreciation. It felt so good to hear her words, yet afterwards I excused myself and went into the bathroom and started to cry. I felt lost, and just didn’t know how to handle the appreciations that were coming my way. At this time a great blessing came into our lives in the form of a simple little woman in Mt. Shasta named Pearl. She was in her 70’s with permed gray hair and a bit of a lisp in her speech. By all appearances she was just a little old lady that lived in a little neighborhood house with flowers. But Pearl could see us in the deepest way. She could see our heart’s desire and had the ability to guide us along our path, so that we could be of service from the heart. Whenever she saw one of us going up to our heads to figure something out, she would remind us to come back down to our hearts. She once told Barry and me that we would never be able to help people unless we could see and experience them from our hearts. Her teachings were good and pure, and we will always feel grateful for our time with her. She did not have a large following, just some people who would come and sit in her living room and listen. I noticed that people often gave Pearl very deep appreciations. She would just smile in wonder at their words and say thank you. She remained humble and pure. One day I asked her how she received appreciations so gracefully, and her simple reply helped to change my life. “I am always surprised and delighted at how God will come through me to help another. I never really know myself and when someone tells me, then it is such a blessing that all I can say is thank you.” She was not sitting there thinking, “Oh my, I am such a special person.” She was merely delighted that the Great Presence of Love was coming through her to bless another. She never took credit for any of it.
Next time someone appreciates you, listen deeply to their words, then thank them and feel the wonder that the higher energies were able to come through you to bless this person. Feel a sense of awe that ordinary human beings can be used to bless and help others. When we see it this way, all we can really feel is grateful. Here are a few opportunities to bring more love and growth into your life, at the following events led by Barry and Joyce Vissell: Jul 19-24—Shared Heart Summer Retreat at Breitenbush Hot Springs, OR; Oct 14-20—Assisi Retreat, Italy for individuals and couples; Feb 7-14, 2016—Hawaii Couples Retreat. Sound Matters: by Steven Halpern
Santana, Coltrane, Cayce, Scriabin, Gurdjieff, Rhodes, and the Quest for the Universal Tone As a jazz musician coming of age in the late 1960s, my personal teachers and heroes always emphasized the importance of developing your own sound on your instrument. For me at that time, that meant trumpet and guitar. In late 1969, that search focused on finding the celestial tones that I heard in meditation. These turned out to be created by a newly invented keyboard invented by Harold Rhodes. When he licensed the manufacture and distribution, it became known worldwide as the Fender Rhodes electric piano. The instant I first heard it in person, played by Herbie Hancock, warming up after my band opened for him at the Both/And jazz club in San Francisco, I was mesmerized. I sold my spare trumpet and guitar and bought my own as soon as I could. Anyone who heard my early albums knows that this was the sound that many reviewers credited as the “iconic sound of New Age music.” Very few New Agers knew what this instrument was, and why it was so unique. That gave me a wonderful platform to discuss the healing power of music and certain universal tones in my earliest interviews beginning in 1975. I recall the first time I heard Santana. I was in a car, driving down the descending, curving road from the University of Buffalo campus to Main Street. I got so excited I almost caused my friend to veer off the road. That was due to the combination of the powerful Afro-Latin grooves combined with the tone of his guitar. For Carlos Santana, the search for what he calls the Universal Tone has been a lifelong quest. He credits a lot of his success as an elite rock superstar to the special tones that he gets from his guitar.
My jazz studies paralleled my spiritual studies, which in 1968 were deepened when I began reading books by Gurdjieff, Ouspensky, Hesse, and Alan Watts. There were amazing anecdotes about the power of tone in their books. Ten years later, the film Meetings with Remarkable Men was released and shown in only a few theaters, and I was among the first in line. The film covers Gurdjieff’s early years; that was all I knew to expect. The opening scenes show tribespeople assembling in a rocky, narrow valley, perhaps in Afghanistan. What happens at the end of the gathering, in which the master musicians of the area meet in a contest, is absolutely mindblowing. The leader explains: “Once every 20 years, our master musicians gather to test the power of their art.” A series of musicians do their thing, and not much happens. Finally, a large, bearded man played his flute, and then began doing an amazing overtone chant.
The Universal Power of Art and Music
The next thing I knew, I had my first out-of-body experience in a movie theater. I knocked over my neighbor’s popcorn, much to his dismay.
The concept of a universal tone is one that traces its lineage to antiquity, back to Pythagoras in ancient Greece, and, further back to Egypt and China (and most likely Atlantis as well). I first read about it when I got turned on to the readings by Edgar Cayce, “the sleeping prophet” and highly accurate psychic reader of the Akashic Records.
I don’t want to spoil it for you. This movie, and at least that scene, is now available online. And until I get the rights to include a short sample, as writer and TV hosts Phil Cousineau and John Cleese have, you may need to search a bit, yet it will be worth it.
20 Conscious Community - June 2015
The Universal Tone Legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane pursued his muse in many dimensions, and his tone was totally unique. So was his spiritual quest, and his prayer to use music to heal and uplift others. I wore out two copies of his A Love Supreme album that summer of 1968. That was also the summer that I was one of two white guys in the first Jazz class taught by Ron Carter, who was at that time the bassist in Miles Davis’s classic quintet. This was part of The University of Buffalo’s innovative Black Studies program. They needed a good trumpet player, and I got the gig, and was allowed to audit. It turned out to be a class, along with a few others, that literally changed my life.
Americans, use it to connect with Father Sky and Mother Earth. I understood that the Universal Tone is about universal consciousness. It’s not about one person, but rather about everyone—it’s a way of using sound to connect with the divine in all of us.”
My one private lesson with another famous jazz artist, Joe Chambers, opened numerous doors for me. He informed me that if I really wanted to understand what Trane was seeking, I needed to go back and study his source, the Russian composer, pianist, and mystic, Alexander Scriabin.
Wow! I read that line around midnight in my guest room at the Ashram, with the sound of the ocean surf filling the room. (It was only about 100 yards away.) I hope I didn’t wake up the neighbors as I did my happy dance and woo-hooed a few times. Who would have dreamed that this ancient and sacred sound healing concept would reach the mainstream public via the memoir of a rock star? And yet, it is absolutely perfect. Carlos is so much more than just an incredible guitar player, and now we know why.
I read a lot of Carlos Santana’s memoir, The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story to Light, on the plane flying cross country to the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas, where I was scheduled to do a workshop and concert. I am sure the folks around me wondered why I was cheering when I read the pages where Carlos mentions so many of the same musical heroes and inspirations as I have had in my life.
I’d love to continue, and quote Carlos as he announces the many dimensions of his expanded persona and work in the world, as a spiritual teacher and healer, yet I’m sure we’d both prefer you read it for yourself in his book. I believe The Universal Tone heralds a new appreciation of the healing power of music, and I highly encourage music lovers, musicians, spiritual seekers, and just about anyone else to read this book. It has a place of honor on my bookshelf, next to the biographies of Coltrane and Scriabin. They are all connected, and so are we.
The biggest surprise in the book, for me, was Carlos’ definition of the term, and later, his connection with Metatron, a spiritual being he became aware of through the work of Dr. J.J. Hurtak and his major book, The Keys of Enoch. I had connected with Hurtak in 1973, as I recount in the liner notes of our album, Sacred Name, Sacred Codes, which you can read at stevenhalpern.com/sacrednamesacredcodes.
Namaste, Steven Halpern
For Carlos, the direct connection to the power of tone came from several sources, including Wayne Shorter, at the time the sax player with Miles Davis in the classic quintet, and Charles Lloyd, another legendary jazz musician. My jaw dropped when he writes of being asked by Saunders King, his wife Deborah’s father and a blues legend: “Do you believe in the Universal Tone?” Carlos continues: “I knew about the idea that there is a Universal Tone, and that many religious paths, even those of Native

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS June... Celebrate Beauty and Love by Elizabeth Summers Hello Venus! This wonderful month of June and the Number Six brings beauty and love for others into our energy fields. Whether your Birthday Number is Six, your Lesson to improve upon is Six or your current personal year energy issue is Six, all this information applies to you. Although, indeed, ruled by the goddess of love, Venus, Number Six love energy is more like a “mother love” than a sensual experiencer. Frequently known as the “Cosmic Mother ”, Number Six finds its strong love of family leading them to worry unnecessarily about their brood. This service-oriented person is deeply idealistic, having a great sense of duty for family, children and community projects. This frequently brings a reputation as a being a “pillar of community”. Volunteering, scouts, little league, safe homes, and cut and paste parties are instigated by folks with the loving, sympathetic, compassionate Number Six energy. They really need to be careful not to become a slave to all their projects. The energy of Number Six is a healer. Therefore, it is not uncommon for them to be in the teaching and counseling profession as well as the healing professions where healing is done through the hands, such as massage. Many a Number Six shoulder spontaneously gets cried on over what started out to be just a coffee break. Caution must be exercised by these “Dear Abby” types as Number Six tends to set down the law as they see it and expect others to follow obediently showing little tolerance or the options of others. To admit that they are wrong or mistaken about a matter is not a strong point. This all stems from their unwillingness to allow their views to be changed. The bottom line is that they must not expect everyone to conform to their rules or this domineering attitude will lead to resentment, bad feelings and possible poor judgments. Number Six has a fear of poverty thus making them very cautious about spending money. When a nest egg is stashed away for a “rainy day” then they are more content and generous. The Venus influence makes Number Six a lover, not a fighter. He cannot stand disharmony, especially in the home. Enjoyment can come from the atmosphere created by a debate but they tend to avoid participation in arguments. If topics are not too deep Number Six might participate. Obtaining a good education, cultivating tolerance, compassion and understanding will go a long way to emotionally stabilize this loving magnetic personality. 24 Conscious Community - June 2015
With the power to make friends more easily than any other Number except Number Five, Number Six proves to be a most loyal friend willing to “fight to the death” for whatever person or cause it espouses. This is especially true if the issues are causing jealousy and discord. While doing battle this “Knight” should wear an “armor” of lucky colors of blue, pink or rose with pendants of emerald or turquoise near the skin. Hopefully, the jousting will occur on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday with dates that reduce down to a Three, Six or Nine. This warm, loving idealist born on the Sixth, Fifteenth or Twenty-Fourth of any month must learn to assume responsibility, serve others, and counsel freely. At the same time, all must be done efficiently and methodically. Try never to be one who is stubborn, domineering, exacting and unreasonable. This wanting to be your own way and imposing your ideas on others comes from fear and your own ego and not from the wonderful cosmic love you are known for. To know the Number Six personal energy is to know peace, harmony, and beauty. Experiencing is energy gives one that gentle “warm fuzzy” feeling we would get as we nestle into the over-stuffed chair with cookies and milk, bathing in the glow of candlelight, sniffing the fragrances of potpourri wafting the air while watching the Muppets on Sesame Street on TV and knowing that all is right with the world. CyberWeave: Spirituality and the Internet by Mary Montgomery
Do It Anyway... Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.
As promised, this month’s column is about the “Do It Anyway” poem that is often ascribed to Mother Teresa. I mentioned that poem in my April column, “Kindness is My Religion,” because of this line: If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. The entire poem reportedly is written on the wall of Mother Teresa’s home for children in Calcutta, India, and is widely attributed to her: prayerfoundation.org/mother_teresa_do_it_ anyway.htm. My exploration of that poem, however, revealed that it was actually inspired by the 1968 composition, “Anyway: The Paradoxical Commandments” written by Dr. Kent M. Keith. (Editor’s Note: Dr. Keith’s original work is a composition, not a poem. The work attributed to Mother Teresa is a so-called poem.) Here is Dr. Keith’s work: People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
As I write this column, I personally need to explore these words and allow them to keep me centered. My life has been slammed by the double whammy of losing my job, and the breakup of a relationship. It has left me, Ms. Manifest Your Desires Mary, feeling sucker punched—but more about my journey and how I’m making these sow’s ears into silk purses next month. This month’s column focuses on Dr. Keith’s work, and how it has helped so many including me operate from their true spiritual center instead of ego—well, at least much of the time. “Anyway: The Paradoxical Commandments” turns out to be an easy exploration. There is the website: paradoxicalcommandments.com, and the “Live the Paradoxical Commandments Anyway” Facebook Page. They even have their own hashtag on Twitter: #paradoxicalcommandments. You will notice that Keith’s original work differs a bit from the Mother Teresa version. It is more worldly success oriented, and the kindness line that is in the Mother Teresa version is missing.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
Nonetheless, Keith’s original has been and continues to be a positive inspiration. He was 19 and a sophomore at Harvard when he wrote the composition as part of a booklet for student leaders. It was the ‘60s and a time of deep discontent. Student activists were seizing buildings, throwing rocks at police, and shouting down opponents. Kent strove to provide an alternative voice. He did this through his public speaking as a student leader, and through The Paradoxical Commandments. The Paradoxical website contains this quote from Keith:
If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.
“I saw a lot of idealistic young people go out into the world to do what they thought was right, and good, and true, only to come back a short time later, discouraged, or embittered, because they got negative feedback, or nobody appreciated them, or they failed to get the results they had hoped for. I told them that if they were going to change the world, they had to really love people, and if they did, that love would sustain them.” \ Keith wrote the Paradoxical Commandments as a challenge. “The challenge,” he said, “is to always do what is right and good and

true, even if others don’t appreciate it. You have to keep striving, no matter what, because if you don’t, many of the things that need to be done in our world will never get done.” A visit to The Paradoxical Commandments website allows you to explore the way this work has been used by business leaders, military commanders, government officials, religious leaders, university presidents, social workers, teachers, musicians, parents, coaches, and students. Click on the “Sightings” section to experience how The Paradoxical Commandments have touched the hearts of millions of people all over the world. Here are a handful of examples: In Superman: The Never-Ending Battle (2004), author Roger Stern describes how Superman’s father, Jonathan Kent, brought home a copy of the Paradoxical Commandments one day, and he and young Clark Kent framed them and put them up in the family library. “Words to live by, Clark,” Jonathan had said, as he’d ticked off the ten simple rules for facing life’s adversity. “There will always be people who put you down, despite the good you do. Whenever that happens, just keep doing it anyway.” In The Seven Secrets, by John Hagee (2004), page 82. Hagee included eight of the original ten Paradoxical Commandments. He challenged his readers to live by these “do-it-anyway” decisions, and never give up. In Keeping Spiritual Balance as We Grow Older, by Molly Srode and Bernie Srode (2005), pp. 66-67. The Srodes included the Paradoxical Commandments in a chapter about understanding what the right to choose is all about. In There’s a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem, by Wayne W. Dyer (2001), pages 106-110. Dyer used the “Do it Anyway” version of the Paradoxical Commandments and renamed them “The Final Analysis.” He attributed them to Mother Teresa, and described them as “An Eight-Point Plan of Decontamination.” After learning of the authorship of the Paradoxical Commandments, Dyer revised his book so that new printings of his book attribute the Paradoxical Commandments to Kent M. Keith. In Buddha never raised kids & Jesus didn’t drive carpool, by Vickie Falcone (2003), page 236. Falcone used “The Final Analysis” or “Do it Anyway” version of the Paradoxical Commandments. The Paradoxical Commandments are featured on “Beliefnet,” the international spiritual website (beliefnet.com/story/41/story_4119.html). They are included as the “Ten Commandments of Leadership” in a website for Boy Scouts in Canada. (scoutscan.com/scoutbits/morethots.html). They are also listed under “inspiration” on the Empowering Caregivers website (care-givers.com/pages/inspiration/doitanyway.html). All of these show the positive power and impact of The 26 Conscious Community - June 2015
Paradoxical Commandments. I will end this column, however, with my very favorite example of their impact: The Paradoxical Commandments were set to music by Suzzy & Maggie Roche on their album, Zero Church (2001). The Roche Sisters used “The Final Analysis” version of the Paradoxical Commandments. Their song is titled “Anyway.” I was so intrigued by this one that I researched it further and discovered that “Anyway” is a Top 20 song on the Country Western charts, and is sung by Martina McBride, four-time female vocalist of the year. The song inspires you to build, love, follow your own dream, and sing your own song. It is available on McBride’s 2007 album Waking Up Laughing. You can see a YouTube video of McBride’s live performance of “Anyway” at The 40th Annual Country Music Association Awards in November 2006 (youtube.com/watch?v=Cr_iNfxZl0I). That video inspired me to go to the iTunes store, search for the Waking Up Laughing album, and purchase “Anyway” for $1.29. The YouTube video also includes the “Anyway” song lyrics, which while inspired by The Paradoxical Commandments, are not an exact copy. Three of the song’s verses particularly resonated with me at this difficult time in my life: This world’s gone crazy and it’s hard to believe That tomorrow will be better than today Believe it anyway You can love someone with all your heart For all the right reasons And in a moment they can choose to walk away Love ‘em anyway And… You can chase a dream That seems so out of reach And you know it might not ever come your way Dream it anyway And you know what. I am going to do just that. I am going to believe that tomorrow will be better. I am going to continue to love and know that there is someone out there who will love me just as fully in return. And, by gosh and by golly, I will continue to chase my dreams. I will dream them anyway, and believe that they will, after all, come my way. My Advice: Read the original version of The Paradoxical Commandments, then explore the various ways it has morphed into even broader conception. Read the Mother Teresa version and listen to Martina McBride’s rendition. Then use all of this as inspiration for your own spiritual and personal growth and development. From My Experience by Cynthia Gran
Hidden Beauty
“The speech of flowers excels the flowers of speech. But what’s often in your heart is the hardest thing to reach. And life is one long mystery, my friend. So live on, live on, the answer’s at the end.” The Answer’s At The End, George Harrison
Something magical happened in my garden last summer. Many of the rose bushes bloomed on the inside first rather than on the top of the bush in plain view. These initial blossoms were virtually hidden. I was very surprised the first time I saw one. The subsequent hidden blossoms stopped me in my tracks. I was captivated. The plants seemed to be speaking from their heart to mine. Each time I saw one, my mind immediately leapt to my own heart to seek the hidden treasure there. My heart filled with joy and a smile came to my face. It was a richer experience with each surprise. When the roses begin to bloom I really enjoy them. I love to tend the garden. It’s a quiet, meditative activity and quite literally grounds me when I get my hands in the soil. I feel fully alive when communing with plants. And I usually work out thoughts and emotions while moving and removing plants. Roses and other flowers really do speak to us, as so many poets have noted. If you’ve read The Little Prince you understand that only the roses that are cared for respond to their human! When the scent of a flower wafts up and draws me into its aroma, it’s exhilarating. Yogis say that “flowers cry for want of love” and that scented flowers are as “truth shining forth.” There is a valley in the Himalayan Mountains fabled to intoxicate a person who walks through it during the few weeks when its flowers are in full bloom. It’s interesting to note that in Ayurveda roses are categorized as aromatics first, as sacred second and then as medicinal herbs. Roses have an official taxonomic designation. Rosa Gallica Officinalis is commonly known as the Apothecary’s Rose. The herbal pharmacist uses unsprayed rose petals to cool the eyes and skin, and nourish nerves and blood. After the flowers fade, rosehips appear. These are highly prized for their vitamin C content. Rosehips impart their lemony taste to herbal teas and their nutritious oil is used in fine cosmetics. Rosewater, a 38 Conscious Community - June 2015
by-product of the essential oil distillation, has many culinary and cosmetic uses. The essential oil itself is the Grande Dame, literally the distilled essence of hundreds of rose petals. It’s historically the basis of many perfumes. Ayurveda further teaches that all things in the inner world have corresponding counterparts in the outer world. What we see outside everywhere is visible only because we have something inside reflecting outward. That is, all things in our outer world begin first in our inner world. The careful practice of mind-full awareness of one’s surroundings reveals the connection of the inner and outer worlds if we take time to seek and cherish their connection. A beautiful rose appeals as a center of consciousness. Flowers can reflect and awaken the inner joy of a blooming heart. They draw us into both their beauty and the beauty inside. Roses certainly are spiritual flowers, on par with the lotus in the many symbols given to it, both east and west. The rose motif is frequently used in design. Stylized rose windows grace medieval cathedrals and modern churches. Rose petals are used to make prayers beads, or rosaries. The unexpected roses from my garden are a spiritual metaphor for the beauty that lay hidden inside the human heart. However, we must remember that the objects of the outer world are perishable. The rose will perish but the treasure inside our hearts will not. The inner world, the beauty and peace inside, the soul, is real and unchanging. To follow the metaphor, as a gardener and yogini, I’d like to think that my inner world is beginning to bloom. I strive to cultivate my inner world as I do my gardening, yoga asanas, pranayama, prayers, and meditation. In order that we may realize this divine nature that dwells in our hearts, Vedanta teaches that the situations of our lives are created by the indwelling Lord and manifested outward as reflections. Beauty and pain are equally its creation. We perceive the things manifested in our world with the colored glasses of our karma. Sometimes the outer world is a distraction for meditators. Over-stimulation from the world around us diverts attention from the inner work of the spirit. But if we have the eyes to see and appreciate objects of beauty, such as flowers, they will be reflections of our inner beauty.
The 15th century poet Kabir wrote: “Do not go to the garden of flowers! O Friend, go not there. In your body is a garden. Take your seat on the thousand-petaled lotus, And there gaze on the Infinite Beauty.” There is beauty all around you. Do you take time to see it? There is beauty inside of you. Do you take time to see that?

by Dr. Carmen Harra Ph.D., and Alexandra Harra Throughout my career, I have seen everything from couples who married their childhood loves to people in their retirement years who still struggle with commitment issues. Most of us fall somewhere between these two extremes, meaning that we experience several relationships before finding the person we believe to be our perfect pairing. Whether you’re currently married, in a relationship, or contemplating entering a relationship with a new love interest, it is crucial that you know what role this person will play in your life. After all, there’s no avoiding the inevitable, often uncomfortable question we must ask ourselves: Is this the person I was bound by destiny to share my life with? Or did I settle too quickly into a relationship with someone who can never complete me? Answering these questions honestly can be hard without a bit of guidance. There are ten signs that indicate a soul mate bond (or a lack of) between you and your partner.
Ten Ways to Know If They’re Your Soul Mate 1. You just....know.
Describing how a soul mate makes you feel is difficult. It’s a tenacious, profound, and blissfully lingering emotion that no words can encompass.
2. Flashbacks.
If your partner is your soul mate, chances are he or she has been present in at least one of your past lives. Soul mates often choose to come back together during the same lifetime and scope each other out in the big world. You might suddenly and briefly experience flashbacks of your soul mate. You might even feel an odd sense of déjà vu, as if the moment in time has already taken place, perhaps a long time ago, perhaps in a different setting.
40 Conscious Community - June 2015
3. You just “get” each other.
Ever met two partners who finish each other’s sentences? Some people call that spending too much time together, but it’s the signal of a soul mate connection. You might experience this with your best friend or your mother, but it is the telltale sign of a soul mate when you experience it with your romantic partner.
4. You fall in love with his or her flaws.
No relationship is perfect, and even soul mate relationships will experience ups and downs. Still, that bond will be much harder to break. Soul mates have an easier time of tolerating, even learning to love, each other’s imperfections. Your relationship is more likely to be a soul mate match if you both love each other exactly as you each are, accepting both the great and awful tendencies we all have.
5. It’s intense.
A soul mate relationship may be more intense than normal relationships, in both good and sometimes bad ways. The most important thing is that, even during negative episodes, you’re focused on resolving the problem and can see beyond the difficult moment.
6. It feels like “you and me against the world.”
Soul mates often see their relationship as “us against the world.” This doesn’t mean they isolate themselves from others, but that they feel so linked together that they’re ready and willing to take on any feat of life, so long as they are at each other’s side.
7. You are mentally inseparable.
Soul mates often have a mental connection similar to the kind twins have with each other. One might pick up the phone to call the other at the exact same time. They often can intuit when something is wrong with the other, even when they are miles apart. Though you may be at a distance, your minds will always be in tune if you are soul mates.
8. You feel secure and protected.
Regardless of the gender of your partner, he or she should always make you feel secure and protected. This means that if you’re a heterosexual man, yes, your woman should make you feel protected, too! Your soul mate will make you feel like you have a guardian angel by your side. A person who plays on your insecurities, whether consciously or subconsciously, is most certainly not your soul mate.
eyes when speaking more often than ordinary couples do; they almost “read” each other this way. It comes naturally from the deep-seated connection between them. Looking a person in the eye when speaking denotes a high level of comfort and confidence in them. 9. You can’t imagine your life without him (or her).
A soul mate is not someone you can walk away from that easily. It is someone you can’t imagine being without, a person you firmly believe is worth sticking with and fighting for.
10. You look each other in the eye.
Soul mates have a tendency to look into each other’s

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER June 2015
June 2015 Overview Mercury continues retrograde until the 11th, spinning us on a merry-go-round of news and activities that elicit a variety of responses, like a beat-the-buzzer game show. Neptune goes retrograde on the 12th, a turning of the tide that sweeps some sands off the beach of our current reality. Saturn returns to Scorpio on the 15th, to finish up some old business and resolve outstanding issues from last year. Venus into Leo on the 5th offers roses, beauty and demonstrations of affection, a promising alignment for this classic wedding month. Some emotional drama will accompany this goddess of love. The Sun moves into Cancer through the Solstice gateway on June 21, soon followed by Mars on the 24th. Our attention comes home, with a feeling of circling the wagons. Some will be defending their turf, others furthering bonds that weave community and shore up resources.
FULL MOON —June 2 NEW MOON —June 16 Monday, June 1
An early 6:01am Void of Course Moon has a slow and easy feel to it. By 1:39pm the waxing Moon enters Sagittarius, and business calls. Set your goals for the day. Rapidly-shifting perspectives from Mercury’s retrograde re-think tank distract us as we juggle many bits and pieces. The dualities and polarities of life can be especially confusing lately, or maybe we’re just more aware of them. We vibrate within the Great Mystery. No use trying to figure things out rationally, as strong static (or inspiration!) is coming from Neptune’s influence. Our minds may be elsewhere, which could be helpful—or not. If you’ve never tried meditation this may be the time. Avoiding drug and drink can help maintain perspective.
Tuesday, June 2 FULL MOON, 11:19am CDT, 12 Gemini-SAGITTARIUS
Altered states continue under the influence of this Full Moon, impacted by Neptune’s subtle veil of illusion and/or mystical inspiration. Choose the best ideas and experiences to stitch up the patchwork quilt of your life, even as some sections unravel under the loose ends of retrograde Mercury. The many variables 44 Conscious Community - June 2015

confront us with our belief systems and biases. Ultimate truth is elusive until intuition sings in your heart. Seek thoughts and experiences that delight you and put those shiny nuggets in your mental pocket. Some nagging thoughts persist that we can’t disregard. A detached, inquiring approach yields interesting realizations that ring true and resolve doubts, inconsistencies and contradictions. Some action in the late afternoon may be called for so that things work out well.
Wednesday, June 3
A still-full Void Moon at 12:59am may mean a wakeful night for many of us. Has inspiration struck you? A level of excitement is likely to permeate the day. News comes in from all directions. Don’t let the chatter overset your initiative. If it feels good, you are heading in the right direction and can find just the ideas and informative bits that keep you on track. The Moon goes into grounded Capricorn at 7:50pm, to slow things down.
Thursday, June 4
By the end of the day, the Moon is in cahoots with Pluto, yielding a powerful current of energy. Use it well, along with Mercury’s ongoing retrograde, to take a good look at your situation and rethink any parts that need an overhaul. Consider and reconsider a workable plan with steps that are practical and do-able. You have until Mercury turns forward on the 11th for research and development. Then turn your attention to implementation.
Friday, June 5
The Moon goes Void of Course at 5:54am with a jolt. Venus sweeps into demonstrative Leo at 10:33am. Artists and lovers can take full advantage of the creative surges that continue to expand more joyfully toward the end of the month. Venus and Jupiter, the two brightest diamonds in the sky, move toward each other and join the evening sky, harbingers of the fusion of love and wisdom. Imagine such a beautiful sight on this rather surprising Void of Course Moon day that can be full of magic, serendipities and unexpected moments. Don’t expect things to happen “as usual.”
Saturday, June 6
The Moon turns into Aquarius as Friday becomes Saturday at 12:02am. You may feel the shift as an emotional impression, odd mood or curious disengagement of some sort. Maybe you are
just unplugging from the week. But maybe you are emotionally unplugging from someone or something that is not resonating with you. Step back and feel how love has its way within you. No judgment on anyone. Feelings are valid and informative.
Sunday, June 7
Already at 9:30am the Moon goes VoC, leaving an open-ended invitation for change. Let the day take you into new territory. Seek out, or at least consent, to new experiences. We need fresh input to reboot our thought processes. Who knows where or with whom you may find yourself by web surfing, going to a workshop or joining a friend for lunch at the new restaurant in the next town. It’s time for some fun. New threads are being woven into the social fabric. You are part of it.
Monday, June 8
The Moon swims into fishy Pisces at 3:16am, stimulating dreams that may make the morning’s confrontation with Monday’s reality more challenging than usual. Pay attention to how you are communicating, when both speaking and listening, to avoid misunderstandings, especially around midday. The level of emotional sensitivity is very high and may be hard to handle. Many people are touchy and reactive. An evening social event is likely to appeal, and be both fun and beneficial. One Piscean choice would be a crystal bowl tuning, a movie or spiritual talk that would raise the vibration. Some folks may be more in the party or bar mood, another Piscean choice, with a likely tendency to overindulge in food and drink, etc. Reality becomes increasingly elusive as the night goes on. Dreamtime may pull you to sleep early, unless your creative muse calls. If so, let that muse infuse you with otherworldly inspiration.
Tuesday, June 9
The Pisces Moon dreams on, with likely interruptions and wakeful moments during the per-dawn hours. It is not an easy day to get things done, especially after the Moon goes Void of Course at 1:08pm. Distractions aplenty, from within and without, pull our attention into fragments, with so much to do and so little time to do it. We are still rewiring our thought processes under Mercury’s retrograde, which makes logical progress impossible. Just go with the flow. What is life about, anyway? Take time to breathe and retreat from the fray, in order to calm your nervous system and reset your priorities. Consider this day a test of your capacity to disengage from stress. The Moody Blue’s song, “Tuesday Afternoon,” hits the spot. Treat yourself to a listen.
Wednesday, June 10
The Moon jumpstarts into Aries at 6:14am, with a fresh impulsive
feeling. A jolt of caffeine may be called for to help get the day going. Mental focus targets goals to accomplish. A lingering and distracting absent-mindedness continues as an undercurrent to the day, as Mercury and Neptune, both slowly turn direction. Old mental tapes are dissolving. Some of our attention is wandering, involved with that subliminal process. Still, things go more smoothly and feel better today, as we enjoy the uplifting energy that is released as anxieties and worries drop away.
Thursday, June 11
A day full of surprises, charged up by the Moon’s interface with transformational Pluto in the morning and excitational Uranus in mid-afternoon. Mercury turns to forward action, full of news and spontaneity at 5:33pm. There is fiery confidence in the air, a feeling of well-being and a call to action. We enter an overnight Void of Course Moon at 6:43pm, feeling energized and motivated. Night owls are on the hunt for new and interesting connections and projects. The internet never sleeps. You may or may not want to turn yours off to get needed rest.
Conscious Community - www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com 45
Friday, June 12
Immediately following Mercury’s turn to direct motion yesterday, Neptune turns retrograde in Pisces at 4:09am today, prolonging a suspended and suspenseful dreamtime state. Imagine a ball thrown into the air. It seems to pause at its highest peak, before dropping under the weight of gravity, which is stronger under the solid, earthy Taurus Moon that begins at 9:16am. How far has the Earth turned in that pause? Maybe pretty far. It’s a little disconcerting. Mercury’s retrograde has erased some redundancies, evoking renewed curiosity about possibilities. Waters churn at our psychic shoreline like bubbling fantasies as incoming waves overlap with the outgoing. False ideas crumble like sandcastles. “Reality” can feel tentative. We experience an extended threshold moment before the tide actually shifts. A strong undertow sweeps away more illusions over the next few months. I’ve mixed metaphors here. See how mixing it up works for you.
Saturday, June 13
Emotionally disturbing moments can interfere with the harmony of some relationships. We still need to be careful with the way we use words, and with the feelings that underlie the words. The current levels of sensitivity will pick up such undercurrents and the nuances beneath the words. It’s the feelings that will be communicated no matter what we say. This can be great for artistic projects, but when we are interacting with others, we need to be clear about our own feelings and engage empathically to sense how the other person is feeling. Security is a big motivation of Taurus. Money issues may be particularly dicey to discuss today, but may need to be addressed. The Void of Course Moon starting at 5:06pm may leave us feeling frustrated and stuck. Go play and let loose. “Shake it up, baby, twist and shout!”
Sunday, June 14
After a slow, indulgent morning, we are prodded to action as the Moon moves into restless Gemini at 12:51pm. Even the laziest couch potato may be ready to get up and go—somewhere, anywhere. Sports, adventure, some kind of physical activity, is called for to get the juices flowing. (Some people want to cuddle on that couch!) For a major moment this evening at 7:38pm, Saturn heads back into Scorpio, to resolve unfinished business from the last couple of years. This process, informed by yesterday’s issues, will last through the summer. Now that we know it’s time to move forward, we can look into the dark corners to sweep out attitudes, situations and even relationships that are no longer viable and meaningful. Some old pieces don’t fit in the emerging picture that we are starting to envision for the long run. In the fall, if we’ve done the work, we will then get the go-ahead from Saturn to move freely onward to our next adventure, to climb the next mountain, to accomplish exciting goals. Your mind can be crystal clear tonight, so write down any ideas that come up.
Monday, June 15
A sweet feeling begins the day, which argues for pleasure rather than work. Again, it may be hard to pay attention to mundane Monday, when songs and colors are going through your brain. What did they put in the water you’ve been drinking? The level 46 Conscious Community - June 2015
of emotional sensitivity continues to be heightened, suggesting to take it easy with ourselves and everyone else. Practice kindness and paying it forward. Thus we’ll feel really good at the end of the day, with full hearts.
Tuesday, June 16 NEW MOON, 9:05am CDT at 26 GEMINI
A new cycle takes all day to download and will take the next two weeks of the waxing Moon to unpack its implications. Sabian Symbols convey images for each degree of the zodiac. A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say. Let’s see what is suggested for this New Moon at 26 Gemini: “Winter Frost in the Woods.” Should we expect a bit of a cold spell? On a deeper level, this suggests an inward time for deepening our roots, of replenishing the basic foundation beneath the surface of our lives, in order to sustain growth for the coming cycle. This image goes along with Saturn’s return to Scorpio’s depths for revitalization. We cut away the dead wood to see where there is room for new, healthy growth in our lives. We shore up and strengthening the bedrock upon which we can build the next phase. Today we can tap into multiple ways to do this. Finally the Moon moves into Cancer at 5:51pm, offering a good meal and a restful night.
Wednesday, June 17
The Cancer Moon is in its strength today, engaging us with its inherent themes of growth, of home and family, and caring for those near and dear. Tend the home fires. As night comes, be careful not to get over-reactive in front of the necessity for change. It’s inevitable for growth. Read again that line above about cutting away dead wood. You may be challenged by family or someone close to you, or by other confrontative persons that provoke your shadow side. Catch yourself before your subjective reactions make the situation worse. Take time to cut the cord with old patterns that you are growing beyond and contemplate a thoughtful response. The Gerry Rafferty song, “Whatever’s Written in Your Heart,” speaks to this: “I came down here to talk to you. I thought this time I might get through. I heard you speak but all the words were dead. We talked all night and left it all unsaid.” The song plays out over the next few days.
Thursday, June 18
An unsettled feeling starts us out, a residual effect from last night. Are you feeling freed up from some old dynamics? Are you are inspired with a new plan of action? Are you making a necessary break from some situation, so that you breathe a sigh of relief to be done with it? Be receptive to input from the universe that grants you just what you need. A cornucopia of excellent possibilities is ready to shower down. No need to resist if you open your arms to the divine. You just may not get what you expect from other people. Gerry Rafferty continues, “ So we agreed to disagree. At least we got our memories...We love and hate the ones we need the most.”
Friday, June 19
A short VoC Moon at 12:52am moves quickly in Leo at 1:23am. An inner compass indicates a sense of direction for the day. Communications are good, creative juices are stimulated. Set your sights on enjoying the day. Watch for the Love-Wisdom pair of Venus and Jupiter in the western sky after dark, the two brightest diamonds, like a double star to wish upon, so close to the Moon. This is a night for lovers.

In the wee hours, the Moon communes with the Love-Wisdom planets in the heart sign of Leo, sustaining a glorious moment, celebrating tomorrow’s Solstice. Unusually, we will experience this pair together yet again in the morning sky in early August and again in late October. Planets in the morning sky exude a different feel, especially as we are making emotional adjustments through the summer. This weekend reverberates through the next several months. Take note. Gerry Rafferty sings on, “I try to find a way to you. One thing I can say to you. Whatever’s written in your heart is all that matters. You’ll find a way to say it all some day. Night and day.”

CANCER, the CRAB Sunday, June 21; Summer Solstice HAPPY BIRTHDAY Caring Cancer Moon Children
Take note: It’s also Father’s Day. This day of heightened solar impact marks the standstill of the Sun and the year’s longest day in the northern hemisphere. A peak time around the noon hour sees the Sun and Moon change sign in tandem. A quick Void of Course Moon starts at 11:09am. The Sun enters watery Cancer at 11:38am, and the Moon enters earth-resonant Virgo at 11:59am. In addition to the seasonal holy-day change to official Summer, there is an additional energy shift occurring over these few days. Gaia Earth intelligence is emitting a subtle wavelength in response to cosmic vibrations and fluctuations. This influences our physicality. This phenomenon of Nature is one of the outcomes of the 2012 Winter Solstice shift. We may have forgotten about this date, which was not as dramatic as expected, but you can’t deny that we are surely experiencing altered time-space energetics in ways unprecedented in our lifetimes. As poet Mary Oliver writes, “You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.”

Another quick Void of Course Moon clicks in at 12:12am, shortly changing into relational Libra at 12:41am. The shift may be palpable at some subliminally active level. The Balance shifts. It’s a busy morning. Mars enters into nurturing Cancer at 8:33am. The home and community garden movement is highly energized this season, as Mars remains in this foody sign into August. More artisanal products will appear. What do you want to eat? Your newly sensitized body may have new particular dietary requirements.
Thursday, June 25
Though we are officially past the peak of the Uranus-Pluto square, the Moon continues to plug us into this still potent dynamic every week. This is one of those days. Cancer has most trouble with change, needing reassurance that “It’s going to be all right.” Talk out your worries, as needed. Other points of view can be useful. We calm down emotionally when we recognize that the one constant in life is change, and see change as a growth opportunity. See what growth opportunities come up for you today. Don’t hesitate to ask around. The door behind you closes before a new one opens. If that new door doesn’t open, try another that welcomes you in. You don’t have to rush it. Take care and take your time. The Moon goes Void at 6:22pm, showering blessings and offering just what we need. Are you being receptive?
Friday, June 26
Welcome in opportunities this morning. Take it easy. Easy come, easy go. Generous loving energy naturally invites help and support from others. The Moon enters Scorpio at 12:57pm to further promote transformation, as we tap into a deeper place of passion and intensity. What are you feeling strongly about? What do you truly need and want? If you are being honest with yourself, these needs and wants match. The magnetism of your desire then leads to manifestation.
Saturday, June 27
This deep encounter with ourselves to tap into our truest desires continues throughout the weekend. We are being pushed down to confront some aspects we would rather not. Be a brave lionhearted lover. Look that dragon in the eye. Every encounter is a 48 Conscious Community - June 2015
mirror back to ourselves. The deeper you look, the clearer your vision. We all have much guidance available if we are willing to listen.
Sunday, June 28
Keep on. Some emotionality overnight reveals more layers of Love-Wisdom. It is lovely when we can share it, yet fears and resistances often get in the way. This, too, is information we can use to do the deep work that is called for. It is a great opportunity, really, like a major exam. Enjoy the richness of your experience. It’s not all angst and storms. It’s about finding your soul. Time is called when the Moon reaches Saturn and goes VoC, at 8:50pm. What a weekend! How deep is your reach? How dark your chocolate? How spicy your heart? The Moon into buoyant Sagittarius at 10:21pm reveals the mythic implications of your story.
Monday, June 29
On into the adventure of a new week. Enthusiasm keeps us creatively engaged and upbeat until late afternoon, when there is a dip in the energy. It becomes challenging to maintain the momentum when imagination calls for attention and ignores the daily duties. Take a well-earned break or a power nap if you are wired that way. Drink plenty of water, like a camel about to cross the desert.
Tuesday, June 30
Pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together. That retrograde Mercury sure mixed them up. A new picture is starting to form. With all the fire sign energy today, your intuition is revved up, getting a feel for some new exciting avenues to pursue. It can be fun to channel your innate artistic nature into projects that have an open-ended outcome. Don’t tell me you have no artistic talent. Let that inner child play and show you different. A little whimsy adds spontaneity and delight to whatever you are doing. The highest arts are Living and Loving. The Void of Course Moon at 1:18pm is full of such wisdom, taking us into a Full Moon to begin July.
